Design Matters ... this phrase, the title of our feature story, says it all. To be fair, everything in the ultra-luxury realm matters, but today’s homeowners are really leaning into quality versus quantity, and creating homes that are all about a distinct lifestyle — catering to what they value. All the bells and whistles, the technology and features are there, but with an eye on a broader theme: less trend and more substance. Writer Camilla McLaughlin notes that her many conversations with top designers revolved around words like timeless, bespoke and quality. Other insights include the desire to create roots and traditions, connect with nature and the outdoors, and infuse interior spaces with colors. “People want joyous rooms now,” notes one designer. are not visible from the water, yet they offer breathtaking vistas, according to Clarke. These cherished lakefront properties, often passed down through generations, seldom find their way onto the market, which is a testament to their enduring value.

Conway Lake is also immensely popular amongst vacationers, making it a beloved destination for those seeking a tranquil retreat as well. “We are just a short drive to Portland and the coast of Maine, so it is relatively easy to get a taste of city life and a day at the ocean while coming home to the mountains,” says Clarke.

The price range for a luxury waterfront property in this market has, like many others, fluctuated with the rise and fall of the pandemic. “Pre-COVID, it was $700,000. Now, luxury homes really start at $1.2 million in the mountains and $2 million if they are lakefront in the White Mountains or Lakes Region of New Hampshire and Maine,” she explains. “The key above all else is the view. A mountain or water view is most important.”

“Pre-COVID, you could buy a 2-bedroom cottage and 100 feet of water frontage for $300,000. Those days are long behind us,” Clarke adds. “What I love about this area is the wide variety of waterfront.” She goes on to explain that the same road can have a multimillion-dollar waterfront estate next to a property with a 2-bedroom cottage and the same amount of water frontage, bought years ago for $100,000. “Families hold onto these properties for generations. It’s one thing I really love about this area. Not everyone wants to cash in. We value lifestyle and the way we live over material wealth.”

Just like many other areas of the country, short-term rentals have taken off and they’ve had a huge impact on the market. “Shortterm rentals are the main reason homes in the $300,000 to $700,000 range have seen a surge in prices. Some homes have doubled in price in less than four years if there are no short-term rental restrictions in their community,” Clarke

rt, whether modest reproductions or museum-quality pieces by renowned painters and sculptors, enhances any home. The more expensive the residence, the more elaborate the art program tends to be. When it comes to multimillion estates, homeowners consult professionals who appreciate the nuanced relationship between art and architecture.

“I see great spaces and architectural environments as canvases for great art,” states Kipton Cronkite, who provides art curation and advisory services for clients primarily in California, New York and Florida through his firm, ArtStager. “My passion is to connect beautiful homes with the works of emerging and established artists, as it’s through art that the true essence of a space can be fully realized,” explains Cronkite. He believes that art showcases the emotions of a homeowner in a way that furniture or lighting simply cannot.

Formerly brought into the design process toward the conclusion of a project, Cronkite reports that art advisors have become more valued in recent years and that his input now begins early, with the preparation of preliminary renderings. “A greater consciousness of art as integral to the overall design has nurtured a collaborative relationship between designers and art advisors,” says

Cronkite. “I try to be responsive to the architect’s and designer’s visions and they trust me to honor their aesthetics,” explains the art specialist, but cautions he is typically retained by the homeowner.

“The juxtaposition between different styles creates an interesting conversation and layering of creativity,” suggests Cronkite, who insists modern art can be effectively presented in a traditional setting and vice versa. The advisor, who is regularly discovering new galleries and attending art fairs, is particularly well qualified to identify trends and emerging artists for his clients. Currently, Cronkite reports strong interest in Contemporary African art — the category includes African American artists — which conveys powerful contemporary voices. As buyers seek diversity in their collections, the works of artists like Rashid Johnson, Paul Sepuya and Danielle McKinney command increasingly higher premiums. “If the client has a sculpture collection they want to display in the garden, we’ll make sure to accommodate that request and provide options for their review.”

Landry and his team integrated the extensive art collection of a client whose Beverly Hills home is a unique hybrid of classical French château and modern aesthetics. The home is referred to as Papillion (“butterfly” in French) for its themed art installations, including a nine-foot-high butterfly sculpture by Rubem Robierb and a spectacular chandelier consisting of 350 hand-blown glass butterflies suspended from the soaring glass rotunda, created by interior designer Philip Nimmo and Windfall Contemporary Crystal Lighting.

At another Landry project in Los Angeles, a modern guesthouse on the site of a large, classically inspired estate, a colorful modern sculpture by Brad Howe reaches skyward through a cutout in the cantilevered roof, a powerful commitment to art in the home. “When designing the sculpture for the guesthouse, we had multiple meetings with the clients and artist to discuss scale, color, movement, transparency, and the importance of the piece given its highly visible location,” says Shepela. For a contemporary oceanfront home in Malibu — its very form was

from emerging artists such as Alexandria Hilfiger, Brandon Lomax and Wes Aderhold.

Luxury residential architect Richard Landry, founding principal of Los Angeles-based Landry Design Group (LDG), must often accommodate clients’ museum-quality art collections into the firm’s designs. “We ask a lot of questions on how the client wants to live in their home, and one of those questions is whether they have an art collection they want displayed,” reports LDG partner Suzanne Evans Shepela. Explaining the goal is to have all art harmoniously incorporated into the project, Shepela states, “Based on the size and type of art, it can either be the star or set into the background.”

Emphasizing a collaborative approach, Shepela discloses, “Our goal at LDG is to seamlessly work with the interior designer so one doesn’t know where the architect’s and interior designer’s work stops and starts.” Maintaining that art considerations extend beyond interiors, she adds,

inspired by the sweeping sculptures of Richard Serra — LDG created a beachy retreat that doubled as a museum featuring masterpieces by Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Miró, Andy Warhol, and Alexander Calder.

The Wiseman Group, founded in San Francisco more than 40 years ago by Paul Vincent Wiseman, regularly accommodates existing collections or newly curated art into the firm’s diverse designs, which are admired for being appropriate to their underlying architecture and local environments. Suggesting that art is an incredibly important vehicle for reinforcing aesthetics, design director James Hunter says, “When the art goes up on the walls is when the home really comes together.” He adds, “It not only personalizes the residence, but provides scale and perspective to spaces.”

“Years ago, we would refer clients to art advisors, but now our firm has designers, including myself, with the depth of knowledge required to work directly with the clients,” says Hunter, who partners with trusted galleries around the world. He notes that clients who acquire museum-quality pieces are often inclined to showcase them in the most prominent spots, which designers sometimes need to counsel against. “The piece might be better suited for a powder room, and there it will really sing in a way that it never could sitting above the mantel,” observes Hunter. He cites a contemporary home in Hawaii in which The Wiseman Group successfully accommodated a world-class collection — paintings by Ellsworth Kelly, Franz Kline and Frank Stella, among others — with some neutral backdrops, but complemented the vibrant modern art with boldly hued furniture.

Chandra Cerrito/Art Advisors, based in Napa, California, engages in the selection of art for multifamily developments and public places. “Art is really what humanizes a space,” says principal Chandra Cerrito, who adds, “When you walk into a building, it’s the art, more than anything else, that tells you the space has been touched by human hands.” At San Francisco’s Trinity Place, Cerrito and the development team commissioned “C’era Una Volta” by Lawrence Argent, a multi-element installation whose focal point is a 92-foot polished stainless-steel Venus de Milo-inspired sculpture. At Vespr in Oakland, Cerrito curated two massive art pieces to distinguish the residential development. Sculptor Ray King’s “Golden Wave” consists of thousands of suspended glass elements that extend from outside the main entrance into the lobby.

Mia Jung, director of interiors at New Yorkheadquartered Kligerman Architecture & Design — known for its distinctive single-family residences inspired by traditional design, but deftly updated for contemporary lifestyles — reports that art is

frequently a consideration. She notes, however, that a surprisingly small percentage of projects require large existing art collections to be accommodated. “In nearly three decades, I’ve rarely been asked to design interiors around an existing collection,” reports Jung, who adds, “In a new residence, even serious collectors typically prefer to source new pieces rather than display existing art.”

“For many clients, art is often an afterthought,” notes Jung, but acknowledges it is critical to successful interior design. “I love to bring in art,” says the designer, who maintains, “You need to add art to really complete a project.” For a beach house in Nantucket, Jung sourced contemporary art, but was cautious about curating museum-quality pieces due to exposure to salt and humidity. For a project in Cabos San Lucas, she acquired art and accessories in Mexico City in consultation with a local dealer. When Jung works with art advisors or galleries, it is a collaborative process in which the interior designer reviews all proposed selections for compatibility.

Silvia Lattova, founder and chief curator of THINK+feel Contemporary, a Miami gallery and consulting firm, advises homeowners on what art to acquire and where to exhibit it. “We want each piece to be displayed in a location that best reflects its qualities and artistic concept,” she reports, noting that showcasing the work while retaining the integrity of the interior design can be a difficult balancing act. Lattova is sometimes surprised at how much forgettable art is purchased, but suggests, “With the international influence in Miami, the level of sophistication is increasing, and we work hard to educate clients and navigate their choices.”

very traveler has his or her own tolerance for risk, so while some define adventure by sampling scorpions in Bangkok, others prefer plunging into frigid polar waters. Remote destinations like Greenland, Patagonia and Antarctica first come to mind, but serious adventures can also be found closer to home, with thrill-seekers gravitating to whitewater rafting in the Grand Canyon or bungee jumping from a Chicago skyscraper. Extreme travelers, for whom even those adrenaline rushes are too routine, may opt for chasing tornadoes, wind walking or even confronting Mount Everest.

Storm Chasing Adventure Tours provides guests close encounters with Mother Nature’s most destructive outbursts in Tornado Alley, under the supervision of veteran storm chasers on six-day tours originating in Oklahoma City or Denver. “Our goal is to share our knowledge and appreciation for severe weather, to seek out and witness spectacular, explosive supercell thunderstorms, stunning, vivid lightning, large hail, massive wall clouds, and violent tornadoes,” says tour leader and severe storm expert Todd Thorn. “We can’t guarantee tornadoes, but you’ll witness supercell thunderstorms on most tours,” he reports.

Wing walking, literally stepping across the wing of an aircraft while it undertakes gut-wrenching aerobatics, is generally not for the kind of tourist content to be sitting poolside at the hotel. At Mason Wing Walking Academy outside of Seattle, adventurous travelers spend hours training for this exhilarating experience with premier wing walking instructor Marilyn Mason. Ultimately, the trainees conduct 25-minute walks at altitudes up

to 3,500 feet above the scenic Olympic Peninsula as Marilyn’s husband and third-generation aerobatic pilot Michael Mason takes his vintage Stearman biplane through its maneuvers.

“We get our share of adrenaline junkies and thrill-seekers, but some people just love aviation or want to experience something unique,” reports Marilyn Mason, who adds, “We draw from all over the world.” Mason quips, “In addition to families and couples, many come solo, because it’s not for everybody!” She encourages students to combine the experience with a trip to nearby Olympic National Park, which offers exceptional kayaking, hiking and whale watching.

Skylodge Adventure Suites combines comfort and adventure on a sheer cliff overlooking Peru’s Sacred Valley. Guests ascend to their precarious-looking accommodations by scaling a steep rock formation outside the ancient city of Cusco. The destination, 1,300 feet above ground and 11,000 feet above sea level, is reached via ferreta (clutching onto cables) or, more easily, by ziplining. Hugging the side of the steep cliff are luxury pods that provide occupants with the illusion of floating above the valley.

The suites, approximately 200-square-foot capsules with 300-degree visibility, feature solar-powered electricity and private bathrooms with the most spectacular views ever encountered when nature calls. “Skylodge offers you the opportunity to sleep hanging on a cliff with all the comfort of a regular hotel, plus the magic of Sacred Valley’s starry skies and views of Inca ruins,” states Natalia Rodriguez, CEO of Natura Vive, the property operator. Those afraid of heights may demur, but no previous experience in climbing is required, as parts of the 90-minute ascent are relatively horizontal with opportunities for resting.

Guests include eco-tourists, daredevils and romantic couples from around the world, reports Rodriguez, who notes the minimum age requirement is 15. “Food is prepared at a restaurant in Urubamba — carried up by our guides in heavy backpacks — so you can enjoy a delicious and gastronomic Peruvian meal,” says Rodriguez. Natura Vive also operates Starlodge Adventure Suites, which hang over Sacred Valley, but require no hiking or ziplining to access.

While some travelers relish height, recharging at Peru’s Skylodge Suites, others choose a different direction. That alternative might be sleeping underground in Tennessee’s Cumberland Caverns, more than 300 feet beneath the surface of the earth. Various overnight packages are offered, involving scaling underground rock formations or squeezing through muddy passages before bedtime. For something cushier than a sleeping bag, consider the White Cliffs Underground Motel, built into a mesa in the Australian Outback.

Because traversing 26.2 miles is challenging even for professional athletes, marathons are not usually held in harsh environments, but intrepid runners drawn by the romance of the Sahara Desert may nonetheless consider competing in Marathon des Sables. The seven-day ultra-marathon — it attracts about 1,250 runners from more than 50 nations — covers 155 sunbaked miles through Morocco and, with triple-digit temperatures, 60-plus health care professionals are on hand. Many participants endure the ordeal of Marathon des Sables to raise money for worthy charities.

Most skiers are dependent on existing ski lifts at alpine resorts, thereby missing out on better powder and more audacious runs found in truly remote settings.

Eliminating such constraints is heli-skiing, which transports skiers to pristine wilderness settings by helicopter, a high-end adventure gaining popularity from Alaska to Iceland. Northern Escape Heli-Skiing provides skiers and snowboarders access to a spectacular mountainous area of British Columbia so vast its size rivals that of some nations. Overnight accommodations range from a rustic, quintessential Canadian lodge to a private luxury villa with a dedicated culinary team, concierge and massage therapist. Most of Northern Escape’s guests are from Europe and the U.S., drawn to British Columbia’s copious snowfalls, scenic alpine terrain and favorable weather, some spending more than $100,000 for private packages. President and CEO John Forrest reports, “Heli-skiing is growing into a very high-end holiday. It’s very decadent to be flown to the top of a mountain for skiing, then enjoy five-star lodging and cuisine in a private chalet.” Providing an extreme vacation opportunity for serious divers is Seaventures Dive Rig, a hotel fashioned from a decommissioned oil rig just off the coast of Borneo. Its guestrooms are somewhat spartan — nothing like the overwater bungalows at the region’s five-star resorts — but for those who care more about diving than the thread count on their bed linen, Seaventures Dive Rig is genuine paradise. Travelers insisting on greater luxury may consider the Underwater Room at Manta Resort, anchored to the ocean floor off the Tanzanian coast. This corner of the Indian Ocean is one of the world’s premier diving areas, but the suite’s underwater bedroom provides similar thrills without ever putting on a wetsuit.

Not everybody is prepared to climb Mount Everest, but Highland Expeditions gives travelers an opportunity to trek to — and sleep overnight at — the storied base camp of the world’s highest mountain. This is a vacation that affords lifelong bragging rights without risking one’s life attempting to reach Everest’s summit. Although guests ascend no further up the mountain, this is still an arduous 17-day trek that reaches an elevation above 18,000 feet. A trek to base camp in the spring is particularly scenic, featuring colorful blossoms that eventually yield to the harsh but exquisite conditions of the Himalayan highlands. For those craving more than just a taste of base camp, Highland Expeditions’ experienced sherpas escort the world’s most ambitious travelers to the summit of Mount Everest.

Travelers inclined to plan their vacations well in advance might look skyward to Voyager Station, a proposed outer space hotel housing 300-plus guests, slated for occupancy by 2030. Above Space Development Corporation promotes the project as providing amenities that include spacious accommodations, stunning views of the Earth, Moon and stars, restaurant-quality cuisine, and exercise facilities, along with earthlike toilets and showers. Additionally, at least a handful of other companies purport to transport tourists into space even sooner, so the final frontier has never been more attainable.

eorge Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg founded a design studio back in 1980 that focused on interior design, but has since transformed into much more. With an emphasis on mood, function, and overcoming challenges, the studio now designs everything from places and experiences to products and goods. These designs are meant to elevate where we live, love, eat, work, and play.

“Design is a compact word for possibility,” says Pushelberg. From experience working on hotels, resorts, restaurants, landscapes, and more, the team believes that problem-solving obstacles are an opportunity for creative solutions and the possibilities are truly endless.

The design duo fell into place after both growing up in Canada and attending Ryerson University in downtown Toronto, which has since been renamed Toronto Metropolitan University. The pair commented, “School is where we met, but we didn’t connect until after graduating and we were both on the hunt for studio space. We ran into one another on the street and decided to share one to cut costs.”

At Yabu Pushelberg Design, the founding partners and studio team are designing a world that they would want to live in, where change is always a new opportunity.

The cosmic twist brought about co-founding Yabu Pushelberg Design, a combination of their two last names, which has since gained a sound reputation for creating authentic designs that go beyond looks. “Our work stems from thinking about the shared emotions people experience,” explains Yabu. “Conceptualization begins with a mood or attitude that we create in dialogue with the world. The reason we practice design is to make life look and feel more effortless for individuals.”

How a person feels entering a space can carry a lot of weight in terms of function as well as aesthetics, and Yabu Pushelberg Design inherently understands the importance of both. The team’s dedication to design has earned several honors and can be traced back to early inspirations.

Yabu notes, “I grew up surrounded by design thinking. My father was a boat builder and my mother was a seamstress. They taught me the importance of precision, tailoring, and creating with intention and integrity.”

These early notions hold true throughout his work today. Similarly, Pushelberg draws on longtime influences that continue to motivate his designs.

“What I have always gravitated toward is people, how they think

and move through life. This almost led me to pursue hospitality, but I realized early on that design is the gateway to change. It is still what drives me to move forward.”

With their impressive collection of authentic work, the pair has been recognized among the world’s most influential design studios by Wallpaper*, Elle Decor, the Business of Fashion, and more. Along with these honors, the designers were also inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame in 2002.

When asked about where and how the team begins a new project, the pair commented that it starts with a story. “Everything we touch begins with a narrative that ties each element of a project together. Usually loosely based on one or two characters whose personal attributes guide the energy of the design language.”

Yabu Pushelberg Design works in a collaborative way that focuses on how the design will function down the line as well even the smallest details. The duo is drawn toward partners and projects that push the envelope and can go beyond what’s been done before. “We have approached every single project since the studio’s beginnings this way. It works for us,” says Yabu and Pushelberg.

property, Moxy Downtown Los Angeles and AC Hotel Downtown Los Angeles. The property is 600,000 square feet and boasts over 700 rooms for guests while offering two distinguishable experiences in a single hotel. “We wanted to introduce the Moxy state of mind to California and develop the language of the AC brand,” they said.

This property is an example of how these designers rely on a clear narrative when working, especially on larger projects that are a slow burn and can take years to bring to life.

“It was a unique opportunity to create two parallel ways of seeing Los Angeles in style and spirit. [California] is a special place that has taught us how to dream, unwind, and nurture ourselves,” says Yabu and Pushelberg. “There is a sense of freedom here that makes life sweeter, and we wanted to capture this spirit and infuse these moments throughout the design language of both hotels.”

Another demonstration of the team’s story-telling through design is the Salvatori Showroom in New York City. This award-winning Italian design company utilizes natural stone to create unique textures on walls, floors, products, and more. The 600-square-meter showroom was designed by Yabu Pushelberg, and features multiple themed areas that showcase Salvatori pieces. The marriage between the

Working on unique projects often brings about individual challenges and a specific set of needs for each space. This explains how the team came to create products as well as experiences. When asked to explain their product designs, about whether they are custom items created for individual projects or part of their own line, Yabu responded, “When we conceive of products, the initial design process is often a parallel journey to interior design.” The inclusion of products is often a way to overcome a particular design obstacle. “We formulate concepts for products when we come across a common challenge, goal, or missing piece in our interior or building design projects. There is a purity to this, a blank space for innovation. It is an opportunity to blend function with form, and beauty with intention,” says Yabu.

Pushelberg agrees, “When designing a hotel, we’re often looking at an eight-plus-year timeline. When designing products, we can concept, design, prototype, and then bring the product to life in a year or two.” Each product is a mini design process with a shorter production time, but is equally satisfying. “It moves closer to the present moment while responding to needs in the project we work on that can launch almost a decade out. It is deeply satisfying to be producing work in both timelines and have them speak to one another,” says Pushelberg.

The nature of design is ever-changing, though each of the studio’s projects has a genuine feel that continues to shine through over the years. Their designs stay true to the team’s unique style of always moving forward. With many projects on the horizon, the designers commented on current design trends that excite them.

“We are heading into an era that values simplicity. Sophistication is embodied through natural, subtle materials that blend or complement nature. For example, plaster rather than drywall for texture, wood, and stone,” says Yabu and Pushelberg.

Strongly believing the world is their oyster, the team hopes to one day work on even larger projects, such as an airport or museums, and other experiences that cannot be defined.

“The responsibility of a designer is to lead through thought and action,” says Yabu. “To see change not as a positive or a negative, but as an opportunity. A designer is responsible for thinking about how the changing world can adapt and grow through time to make objects, environments, and buildings that represent change.”

Electricity has revolutionized the auto industry, and now plug-in bicycles are emerging as must-have luxury products.

n recent years, consumers and Wall Street analysts have been obsessed with the auto industry’s rapid adoption of electric power. While innovations in automobiles and trucks have captured most of the attention, bicycle manufacturers have quietly converted from pedal-power to electricity, adding a new dimension to this mode of transportation. Some of the hottest products carry familiar names, from Tour de France legends to iconic sports car brands.

Early electric bicycles were unattractive and their bulky batteries offered limited range, but like other electric vehicles, they have evolved into sleek, powerful machines. They also bring the joys of riding to people who may not be in prime physical condition, but are anxious to traverse city streets or mountain trails. For conscientious commuters, these bikes help riders navigate congested urban areas while leaving a minimal carbon footprint.

According to Fortune Business Insights, the current global market for electric bicycles is projected to nearly triple to approximately $120 billion by 2030, fueled by more compact rapid-charging batteries, a flood of new products and greater environmental awareness among consumers. With commuters abandoning public transit and craving outdoor activity, the pandemic provided a catalyst for U.S. sales, seeing imports of e-bikes rise by 76 percent and 80 percent in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

There are few names in cycling more prominent than Greg LeMond, who won three Tour de France championships, and his Tennessee-based LeMond Bicycles specializes in EV technology. With its lightweight carbon fiber construction and ergonomic qualities, LeMond’s Prolog, starting at $5,495, features a minimalist design and an 11-speed Shimano GRX drivetrain that performs well in both trail and street conditions. Various upgrades allow Prolog buyers to enjoy seamless, high-tech gear shifting with an LED handlebar display, carbon fiber wheels or extended range via a second battery. Greg LeMond has created a world-class bicycle with championship pedigree that just happens to be electric-powered.

It did not take long for prestigious European automakers to put their world-class engineers to work on e-bike lines. “Everywhere

you look, apparently established categories are being blown apart — and that’s a good thing,” proclaims Werner Haumayr, a BMW vice president responsible for new innovations. He adds, “In the future, classifications such as ‘car,’ ‘bicycle’ and ‘motorcycle’ should not determine the nature of the products we think up, develop and offer.” One result of that blurring of product classifications is the BMW i Vision AMBY pedal-electric bicycle, a concept vehicle offering a peek into the future of e-bikes.

The i Vision AMBY (the AM refers to “adaptive mobility”) is a versatile machine offering the enjoyment of a motorized vehicle while allowing riders to continue pedaling for exercise. “The modes and clever route selection are intended to make it one of the fastest travel options through a city,” says Haumayr of the smart bike designed to attain a relatively high speed of 37 mph. While its engineers continue developing new innovations, BMW is already partnering with France’s Angell Mobility to produce e-bikes under the automaker’s MINI brand.

Other luxury automakers have also delved into the e-bike industry, including an Alfa Romeo partnership with Compagnia Ducale and Mercedes-AMG’s Formula One-inspired products with N+ Bikes. Porsche is another luxury brand making a commitment to electric bicycles in collaboration with Rotwild, a leading German manufacturer of mountain bikes. The legendary sportscar maker also acquired Fazua, a pioneer in the development of compact, lightweight drive systems, and a majority stake in high-tech Croatian e-bike brand Greyp to enhance its resources.

“We see great potential for Porsche in the e-bike segment, which is why we’re consistently expanding our activities in this area,” says Lutz Meschke, deputy chairman of the executive board of Porsche. “As is characteristic of Porsche, it’s all about developing products that inspire people through intelligent design, sophisticated technology and outstanding performance,” he states. The Cross, designed for trail riding, starts at $11,000 and the Sport, better suited to urban environments, starts at $12,750. High prices for bicycles, yes, but like their four-wheel counterparts these Porsches are exquisitely crafted machines. With its cities restricting or heavily taxing automobiles to reduce congestion and pollution, it is not surprising that Europe is a leader in electric bicycle production. Founded in the Netherlands in 1892, Royal Dutch Gazelle manufactures premium e-bikes, featuring integrated Bosch electronics and battery ranges approaching 100 miles. They are popular with urban commuters, who appreciate their comfort and reliability.

“We’re thrilled to launch these four new [2023] models, which represent the very best of Gazelle,” says Mark Danhof, general manager for Gazelle North America, of the Avignon C380, Arroyo C5, Ultimate C380, and Ultimate T10. “These electric bikes embody our commitment to innovation, quality and sustainability,” says Danhof, who adds, “Whether they’re commuting to work, touring the countryside or looking for an exhilarating ride, we can’t wait for riders to experience them.”

California-headquartered Pedego, with 220 brick-and-mortar stores, is the largest retailer of e-bikes in the U.S., and the 2022 debut of its Avenue (starting at $1,995) represented good value for commuters. “I’ve always had a vision for Pedego to release a low-priced bike without compromises, and after 10 years of iterations I’m proud to release the Pedego Avenue,” said chief product officer Paul Auclair. “It’s packed with thoughtful features and has the ability to be fully customizable based on the rider’s everyday needs.”

Whether traditional or electric, foldable bikes — they are ideal for camping, carrying on public transit or tucking under a desk — are having a moment. California-based Aventon offers value-minded foldable e-bikes, but Brompton, a pricier UK brand, originated the concept. “Brompton aims to be the go-to urban bike brand in cities across North America by 2027,” proclaimed Juliet Scott-Croxford, president of Brompton North America about her company’s ambitions, noting its products already enjoy a loyal following in New York City.

“To fuel this, we’re moving into a new phase of innovation and product development to make our bikes lighter and more convenient to move around a city,” states Scott-Croxford, whose company’s foldable bikes begin at $3,700. Brompton’s products tend to be relatively light, with one model less than 30 pounds. At 65 to 70 pounds, the weights of some competing foldable e-bikes severely compromise their convenience.

In the age of ever-changing clothing trends, one thing seems timeless: Belts.

Vintage, or vintage-style clothing is trending, as many people search for sustainable fashion and “authentic” looks, while still having that luxurious feel. For belts, this can come in the form of snakeskin ’90s styles or chain belts from the ’70s.

But designer statement belts are also everlasting. A good black or brown leather belt can last decades if properly cared for, and a simple Gucci belt is a classic. Fabulous finds on 1stDibs at press time include classics from top designers such as the Chanel vintage gold chain belt from the 1980s ($8,750), the Hermès Black “Collier de Chien” Belt from the 1960s ($20,825.04), or the 1996 Gucci Tom Ford Runway Yellow Python Belt ($1,995).

Homes & Estates spoke to three high-end fashion stylists, who work with belts every day as they pull looks for their clients to achieve at-home elegance. They each discuss different approaches to styling a belt, and the various ways you can use them in your everyday attire.

“One of the most common questions I am asked about is belts,” says Daisy Tinsley Barnett, owner of The Daisy Edit brand and website of the same name. “Many people struggle with how to incorporate them into their outfits. They are very much an accessory that can elevate a look.”

Barnett is a personal stylist for men and women in the San Francisco area. She works with clients on simplifying their closets down to only the most important and fabulous pieces. She also believes that

you don’t have to be a celebrity to have a stylist — that it’s everyone’s right to look into their closet and love what they see.

She defines two main uses for belts — ones that go through loop holes to hold up loose pants, or a more styled belt to go over dresses or blouses.

“I think every woman should have a high-quality, timeless black and brown belt in their wardrobe,” says Barnett. She is a fan of vintage designer belts, and her absolute favorite is the Ferragamo gold-buckle reversible belt. There are both men’s and women’s versions of this belt, and it is a popular choice for a great logo belt, running at around $500.

“It’s not an ‘in your face’ logo buckle, but it’s just enough designer lux,” Barnett says of the Ferragamo belt. “Adding this type of belt to a simple black trouser and cream blouse instantly adds polish and sophistication.”

When it comes to spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on a belt, stylist Amy Berenbak thinks it’s worth investing in. Berenbak is a stylist in the Tri-State area and the New York metropolitan area, where she’s had over 25 years of experience in the fashion industry. She’s had roles at Bloomingdale’s on 59th Street in Manhattan, Diane Von Furstenberg, Prima Donna, and many more notable names.

Berenbak says that gold or silver hardware on a belt

will always be fashionable, and is worth it to spice up any look. “Black or camel colors with hardware are sleek and fun,” she says.

Some great examples of chic hardware exist at Valentino Garavani, which offers a metallic leather belt with a crystal camo buckle for $2,850.

But beyond just the look and feel, belts can also do wonders when it comes to carving out a perfect silhouette.

“Belts break up the shirt to the pant … meaning it’s very flattering to the silhouette,” Berenbak notes. “The rise on pants varies, so when we have a higher rise, it’s beautiful and flattering to break the silhouette up.”

And with so many patterns and textures to choose from, belts can

accentuate anyone’s unique style, whether you enjoy street-wear, boho, modern, or classic, she says. When it comes to the most popular kinds of belts in 2023, Berenbak thinks people are geared more towards classic, western, or hip-hugging.

Principal and stylist Samantha Brown loves a studded belt with bold and fun textures, which she says is the perfect way to create “jewelry on your waist.” The most glamorous examples would be from Versace, with their decked-out Barroco Medusa belt for $550, or even better, Stefano Ricci’s crocodile belt with eagle buckle for $4,600.

Brown spearheads Samantha Brown Style, her company that is based in New York, but says she travels to meet clients as needed. Her website notes that she’s worked over 1,000 fashion shows throughout her career, and was personally recruited by Stacy London, the star of TLC’s “What Not to Wear.” Brown’s work has been featured in Vogue, GQ, Glamour, and many more.

When it comes to picking a belt for a day-to-day look, Brown says another thing to consider is the width of the belt you choose.

“A medium width belt is flattering on most body types,” she says. “Generally, the scale of an accessory should mirror the scale of the person — petite frames in skinnier belts and curvier frames in wider belts.”

When choosing belts for her clients in specifics, she sees the good in all types: vintage is great for originality, and designer is usually high quality and modern. Her favorite brands include B-low the Belt and Ferragamo as well. If she had to choose, Yves Saint Laurent is her favorite logo belt. Another great logo belt is the Dolce & Gabbana x Kim Dolce Letter Leather Belt, running at $1,825.

Other great brands to look into, as noted by Berenbak and Barnett, include Dylanlex, All Saints, and Petit Moments for women, and Rag & Bone, Paul Smith, and Hugo Boss for men.

Belts are clearly a crucial addition to anyone’s closet, man or woman, for reasons far beyond holding up your trousers. They are a shape-shifting accessory that allow you to add new shapes and textures to a simple outfit, taking it to new heights in less than a minute.

Design Matters

What Matters Today

More than at any time in recent memory, particularly for the affluent, how a home lives is essential. “Luxury is about the experience and feeling,” shares Beverly Hills designer Christopher Grubb. “It’s also about something unique. More people have the desire to include luxury elements in their homes. They no longer feel like they are an exception.”

“Our clients’ aspirations extend beyond conventional interior design; they crave an experience that fosters mindful living and savoring each moment,” Dallas designer Ginger Curtis of Urbanology Designs. “They understand the nature of aesthetic environments and their impact on the human experience. As we meticulously curate spaces, we invite an atmosphere of serenity, enabling our clients to relish the present with a sense of profound luxury.”

Ask designers what’s important for luxury interiors this year, and conversations revolve around timeless, bespoke, quality and color.

“I am seeing a movement towards a more eclectic interior with my high-end clientele,” says Martyn Lawrence Bullard, one of Architectural Digest’s top 100 designers. “The minimal, mid-

century thing is giving away to more layers, luxurious fabrics and textures, lots of wallpaper use from the walls to ceilings, and a mix of good antique pieces used as points of drama and discussion in rooms again. Not full-on antique-filled rooms, but very strategic items added to give personality and a more timeless vibe to the spaces.”

“Clients seem to want to create roots and family traditions with much less of a sense of trendy or temporary living,” explains Arkansas designer Chris Goddard, whose approach encompasses a range of styles from classically traditional to ultra-contemporary. “I am seeing a return to the time when clients wanted their homes done in a more timeless fashion filled with personal details.”

Mixing It Up

Rather than a single style, homes today often reflect several influences. “In my experience, no one design style defines the luxury client. We try to guide them away from fads and towards timeless design, which generally leans towards a more transitional space where we mix the old with the new and traditional with contemporary elements,” says

Depending on the property and location, Grubb says, “people are still open to contemporary, but more details are coming into projects. But still, they are not overly decorated.”

Most Important? Quality.

“Luxury can mean many things to a consumer, but I am seeing the continued push for quality over quantity,” shares Goddard. “We encourage clients to take their time, purchase the best they can afford and layer furnishings in as the budget allows. There is nothing worse than throwing good money after bad when one gets in a rush to fill a space.”

Kitchen Confidential

Although the jury is still out on Modern Farmhouse, the last big design style, kitchens are a good indicator that the enthusiasm may be beginning to cool. Wintersteen points to blue and white kitchens, which were in high demand a few years ago. She says she got to a point where she had to remind consumers of the lifespan of this type of a trend.

“In the LA market, we are replacing traditional four-walled kitchens with family-oriented, open-concept spaces centered around a sizeable European range and with designated zones such as coffee centers, dish pantries, food pantries, and breakfast banquettes,” shares Karen Harautuneian, founder of Hub of the House Studio. These openconcept designs feature sweeping finishes of deep, rich wood tones layered with bronze accents and large areas of glass and blackened steel doors linking the outdoor dining spaces and the yard to the kitchen.”

“Kitchens are definitely back to different tones of wood and a linear veneer on the upper section. I am also finding people are more open to upper and lower cabinets not being the same,” observes Grubb.

Marble and quartzite are in demand. And designers also report a growing interest in natural stones such as soapstone for countertops and limestone floor tiles.


Biophilia might seem new, but it builds on growing wellness and sustainability trends. “Biophilic design, or the clients’ desire to connect with nature, is a recurring theme we’ve seen


in the last few years. Whether it be through a selection of fabrics, art and furnishings that bring the outside in, or living spaces that open to outdoor retreats, clients are looking for an escape in their own home or backyard,” shares Rhudy.

So, it’s no surprise green hues are popping up in design schemes. Kohler recently introduced a collection of colors, including pale green and peach. These hues might be vintage, but they seem current. And the installations, such as an Art Deco powder room from designer Jonathan Adler, give a fresh twist on these classics.

Green also reflects shifts in color preferences from gray-toned neutrals that once predominated to warmer tones. Saturated colors, even if only an accent, are having a moment as evidenced by Pantone’s selection of an unabashedly vibrant red, Viva Magenta, as 2023’s color of the year.

“Color is key,” according to Bullard, who is renowned for his range of styles and eclectic, sophisticated interiors. “People want joyous rooms now and seem far more open to expressing that with color, especially greens, eggplants, burnt umber, madder terracottas and golden amber.”

Coloring 2024

A few manufacturers have already weighed in on 2024 colors with Sherwin Williams piloting a new direction in color forecasting featuring a collection of 48 hues. This curated anthology, dubbed Volume One, is organized by color family and saturation, ranging from a convergence of blues and greens to ravishing red and purples to wispy delicate tints. “It’s going to function more like a report for homeowners around what we’re seeing and where we’re going in terms of color families. It will make it easier to bring trending color into the home in a way that can feel truly cohesive from room to room,” explains Sue Wadden, Sherwin Williams director of color marketing.

Floorplan Catalyst

Outdoor living, a macro design trend for over 15 years, initially called to mind a patio, pergola, or deck adjacent to main rooms of the home. No longer just a suite of amenities, outdoor living has evolved into a mashup of biophilia and informed design that caters to almost everyone.

Now, the term represents a fundamental change in interiors and floor plans, particularly in higher-priced properties. Like most substantial changes, it has been evolving for more than a decade. Rather than a room or two, entire sections, if not every room, in a home are often oriented to the surrounding landscape. Innovations in glass and door technology have streamlined connections, enabling large

expanses of glass and doors that fully open to essentially disappear. Often, indoors and out are so closely synced that not even a change in flooring gives a hint to a transition.

Technology often gets overlooked in design conversations, but it’s an essential in the high end. True luxury, according to Grubb, is the ability to use your home the way you want. For example, being able to work wherever you want. Even though homes in this bracket have an extensive home office, Grubb ups the level of technology in outdoor spaces and even kitchen islands for this use. He also hardwires data connections to prevent potential Wi-Fi issues during important calls.

Another innovation, switch glass, which can change from translucent to opaque, is also

changing the outdoor experience, offering instant privacy in outdoor showers. Inside, he says, it adds a level of privacy to huge bath installations.

Where do clients first experience the benefits of technology in homes? In ultra resorts, says Wintersteen. “Once they experience these small luxuries such as having lights turn on automatically when they walk in or being able to open and close shades at the push of a button, they want to make their home equivalent.”

In short, what matters for clients today, according to Rhudy, is “all the bells and whistles from smart home light and sound systems to customized furniture, fine art and high-end finishes in kitchens and baths. They understand quality and want unique and original designs that reflect their personality and standing.”

explains. “Luxury home neighborhoods have reacted in some cases by taking the opposite approach by banning rentals that are less than 30 days. Or they followed the lead of exclusive developments such as Hale’s Location, a lowtax community that allows no rentals at all in order to keep the close-knit community feel of their homes.”

This market has also been impacted by the ban on short-term rentals in certain areas. “Some communities are pushing back due to the lack of affordable housing in our area,” explains Clarke. “You would think that luxury homes would not be impacted by that, but even if folks have no intention of renting in the short term, they balk at anything that restricts the way they might want to use their property in the future, especially as not being allowed to rent short term can eliminate some investors.”

Florida Keys

When you close your eyes and envision a luxurious oceanfront paradise, chances are, your vision closely resembles the enchanting beauty of the Florida Keys. Lisa Swanson, luxury property specialist of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Keys Real Estate Knight and Gardner Realty, possesses a wealth of knowledge when it comes to everything that defines opulence in the Florida Keys.

Specializing in canalfront and oceanfront luxury properties in the lower and middle Keys, Swanson notes that water activities are plentiful and there is truly something for everyone.

“Boating is huge, as well as flats fishing, deepwater fishing, diving the reefs and wrecks, snorkeling, paddleboarding, and kayaking in the back country amongst the mangroves,” she lists. Swanson also mentions that on the weekends, neighbors meet on the natural tide sandbars with their dogs to go kitesurfing. “Neighborhoods are very social and typically have a voluntary association for socials, water activities.”

Most waterfront homes in the Keys have marinas close by for folks to launch their boats, while some opt to keep their boats on their personal boat lifts, which are a common amenity. Private docks are also customary, and many residents have boat ramps or access to beaches for Jet Skis and kayaks/paddleboards.

The Keys are extremely attractive to vacationers, investors, and those searching for a second home in paradise. “There are only

two areas similar to the Florida Keys: Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands, both extremely remote. The Keys are very accessible by short direct flights from Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, Houston, Philadelphia, and seasonal flights from many more cities,” Swanson explains. As for the market, Swanson has continued to see low inventory and a strong demand, leading to upward pressure on real estate prices. “Sellers are commanding top dollar for fixeruppers and luxury buyers would rather buy finished residences even if they are priced higher. Many high-value properties are being transacted in the $5 million to $8 million range,” she says. Though real estate prices on waterfront properties in the Keys are up, they are still considerably affordable compared to other areas in Florida, and that affordability plays a role in the overall market as well.

Kiawah Island

Lastly, we venture to the private community of Kiawah Island, South Carolina. Just south of Charleston, Kiawah Island is renowned for its extraordinary ecosystem of diverse wildlife, maritime forest and saltwater marshes, all on a vast 10-mile stretch of Atlantic coastline. Beyond its natural wonders, the island offers fishing opportunities, an array of water sports such as surfing and kayaking, and seven elite golf courses. Dan Whalen, president of Kiawah Island Real Estate, elaborates on the splendor of the Island and current state of the market.

According to Whalen, Kiawah Island consistently ranks as one of the most soughtafter second home markets in the U.S., thanks to pristine landscapes, varied real estate offerings and the Kiawah Island Club (a private, members-only club exclusive to Kiawah Island property owners). The diversity of waterfront luxury property options plays a huge role in this demand — homes on ponds, tidal marshes, deep-water creeks, rivers, and the Atlantic Ocean. Many of these homes boast their own private docks, and there are multiple community access points throughout the island.

The expansion of remote work options during the pandemic has also helped shape the luxury market. “The current mix on Kiawah is probably 20-percent permanent residents and 80-percent second homeowners,” says Whalen. “The real difference is how that 80 percent are now using their homes. Whereas they used to

spend four weeks here, it’s now more like eight to 12 weeks. There is so much more sustained activity on Kiawah throughout the year due to work-at-home. There really aren’t shoulder seasons anymore.”

The price range is $4 million-plus for luxury single-family waterfront homes. They generally boast picturesque views and offer amenities including pools, docks, screened porches and guesthouses. Membership to the Kiawah Island Club is sometimes available with the purchase of luxury listings from Kiawah Island Real Estate. Popular neighborhoods include Vanderhost and Ocean Park, each with their own amenities.

“While the island continues to see a gradual inventory replenishment from record breaking lows during the pandemic, it remains tight, and median home and homesite prices have increased dramatically since the first half of pre-pandemic 2020,” Whalen explains. “Inventory continues to slowly rise, with 2.6 percent of island-wide properties being listed at the end of the second quarter of 2023 compared to 2.0 percent at the end of the second quarter of 2022.”

Many familiar with the Florida Keys consider it to be pure paradise.
