Be Like Louise Have a Plan and Keep It Updated I love my role at PBS North Carolina. My purpose is to promote estate and planned gifts and to steward the PBS North Carolina Legacy Society, the folks who have designated us as a beneficiary in their estate plan. It’s a treat to get to know our supporters and help them with their charitable interests. In recent years, PBS North Carolina has regularly promoted estate planning by providing info and encouragement to our supporters as they create their legacy. You don’t have to make an estate gift Thursday, April 21 to PBS North Carolina, but you do need 10:30 AM a plan of some sort. As a favorite teacher once said, “Everyone needs a will, you can’t take it with you.” This April, we’ll offer a virtual intro to estate planning with Kathleen Rodberg, an attorney who specializes in elder law with the Asheville law firm McGuire Wood & Bissette.

ESTATEPLANNING WEBINAR

PBS North Carolina has benefitted from many estate plans, and I enjoy learning about benefactors who came along years before I arrived. The late Louise Lamont of Chapel Hill loved the theater. An amateur actress, Louise was either on or near the stage for much of her life. She loved quality television and was a longtime supporter of PBS North Carolina. A widow, Louise took control of her financial affairs and produced a thoughtful last will and testament. When she died in 1996, her estate established the John and Louise Lamont Fund, a permanent endowment for the general support of PBS North Carolina. In essence she still supports what she enjoyed in life. I regret never knowing Louise, but here at PBS North Carolina her legacy endures. If you’d like to create or update an estate plan, join us Thursday, April 21, at 10:30 AM for our webinar. To RSVP, email giftplanning@pbsnc.org or call 877-485-3200 by April 15. Here’s to all of our great supporters. Thank you!

Hello, Spring Celebrate the change of seasons with your little ones. Encourage them to ask questions about the world around them. Questions to Ask: • How is spring different from winter? How is the weather changing? What do you notice about the grass, trees and plants? • How does the changing weather affect the animals in our neighborhood? What are birds up to? What about bugs and insects? Have you seen any animals that you didn’t see in the winter? • What colors do we find in nature when it is spring? Where might we find those colors if we went on a walk? How are they different from what we see in fall or winter? Read more: pbsnc.org/celebratingspring

Member Stories Each of us has a story to tell. PBS North Carolina shares stories on-screen but our impact goes deeper than that. Viewers and donors love to tell us how our programs and initiatives inspire them to grow, create bonds, discover new cultures and find joy. Because of your support, you will help our community grow in countless ways. Here are just a few stories from members and donors about how PBS North Carolina has helped and inspired them.

Finding Joy & Comfort The last two years have been tough but finding joy in the small things can make a difference. Pamela Price and Jeannette Barrell share how our programs put smiles on their faces during challenging times. “Thank you for continuing to bring entertainment and joy into my house. When I’m feeling down and see that Poirot or Grantchester or some other wonderful PBS show is going to be on that evening, it really does make me feel better.” —Pamela Price from Winston-Salem

Because of you, PBS North Carolina is more than a TV station, streaming app and media company. We are a communityfocused education powerhouse for all ages.

“PBS was a godsend in 2020 for me. I broke my ankle at the end of February, and it needed surgery. So I was already out of circulation in mid-March when the restrictions started. PBS North Carolina was the best entertainment, including the children’s programs, which I had not watched for years. I found they were an excellent teaching medium, regardless of age (I will be 90 later this year). You are all doing an excellent job. Thank you!” —Jeannette Barrell in Concord

Keep Learning, Keep Growing PBS North Carolina aims to expand your horizons, help you develop new interests and light up your screens and minds with innovative programming. The Stokleys, Kavitha Subramaniam and Jean Skaife share how PBS North Carolina has broadened their knowledge and perspectives. “We’ve supported PBS North Carolina since the early ’80s, enjoying brilliant science shows, travel, documentaries, local profiles and Masterpiece dramas—and years of Sesame Street when our daughter was young. We turn to PBS almost every evening to keep learning and enjoy quality programming. We are proud sponsors.”

Your support helps people build stronger connections and develop deeper empathy for others.

“PBS North Carolina means educational and entertaining programming for children and adults. I donate to this network so that everybody can have access to educational shows. I like some of the kids shows though I am an adult, but I like to watch shows related to nature and music as well. A kid at heart, I like looking back at the PBS shows I watched as a kid and see the new ones.” —Kavitha Subramaniam in Raleigh

“The PBS Nature program with the hippos in the Okavango Delta of Botswana took me back to an African trip in 1995. I felt like I was there again with the hippos. The exceptional photography of all the PBS Nature programs brings scientific and educational information to all. I am a senior and arrived at my 100th birthday last September. I rely on PBS for bringing me to the world I still wish to be involved. Thanks, PBS.” —Jean Skaife in Chapel Hill

The Ties that Bind

Jean Skaife

We are better when we’re together. Your generous support of PBS North Carolina strengthens viewers’ relationships to their families, neighbors and communities. Maureen McCann is on the other side of the world but stays connected with her mom in Raleigh with PBS North Carolina programs. “I am a proud North Carolina teacher who has been teaching internationally for over 25 years. One of the things I miss most about North Carolina is watching PBS on television. Coming from a blue-collar family whose parents did not go to college, PBS gave my family a passport to a wider world, whether from Masterpiece, travel programs or NewsHour. PBS was part of my family’s culture.

Maureen McCann

Because of the pandemic, I have not been able to return home for two summers. However, during my weekly phone calls with my aging mother who lives in Raleigh in the home where I grew up, we frequently talk about what we saw on PBS. Although PBS is not available in the country where I live, I can manage to watch some programs via YouTube. Catching bits of PBS from the other side of the world connects me to my family, to my state, to my country. PBS feels like home. I donate to PBS North Carolina because I want to share this gift with other members of my community.” —Maureen McCann in Hong Kong

Family Time Family is so important and that is why we prioritize creating positive screen time for children and nourishing connections between all generations. Members Tiffany Debnam and Michael Stewart-Isaacs share how their family bonds with PBS North Carolina. “PBS NC is our family’s first choice when we want family-centered entertainment at home. It is accurate, meaningful and educational. When we decided to cut the cable cord, we were comforted in knowing we would still have access to the channel. I can trust PBS NC. This means I feel comfortable not having to monitor the screen when my kids want TV time. What’s most important to us are the insightful Debnam family shows and specials. No other broadcast— live or streaming—provides that for us. I am always impressed by the broad range of topics the channel covers, even the hard topics. PBS NC genuinely highlights diversity!” —Tiffany Debnam “Being a loyal viewer of PBS North Carolina has meant so much to our family’s bonding time and memories. All our children are growing up watching amazing PBS Kids programming. My wife and I enjoy informative series like Black Issues Forum and special programming like the Muhammad Ali series to provide us with a greater sense of connected awareness about concerns in the community.

Stewart-Isaacs family

We also love the PBS NC app as a tool to keep up with the latest headlines and upcoming series.” —Michael Stewart-Isaacs

Thank You, Members Your support brings joy, learning and connection to North Carolina and beyond. Thank you for making our state a brighter and more supportive place for people of all ages, backgrounds and interests. With your help, we will continue to spark lifelong curiosity and wonder, empower our communities and enrich the lives of all North Carolinians.
