Dear UC Santa Cruz graduate,

Congratulations on your graduation from the University of California Santa Cruz. You have faced extraordinary challenges, but you have persevered, showing incredible resilience and grace in the face of uncertainty. I am extremely proud of what you have accomplished.

Students come to UC Santa Cruz because they want to make an impact — they want to be actively involved in solving the world’s complex problems, but it is rare for a graduating class to immediately confront problems that impact all of humanity. This class is tasked with the twin challenges of crafting a future that strengthens us against future pandemics and rooting out systemic racism to put an end to inequity and injustice.

These are not simple tasks, and the fact you have accepted these challenges whole-heartedly speaks volumes. You have already helped change our campus for the better, actively building community in difficult times. You have embraced innovation and collaboration. You are exactly who the world needs right now. Your UC Santa Cruz diploma will signal to the world that you’re ready and able to be a part of this vital work. I have hope for our future because of you.

I also offer my congratulations to your family, friends, mentors, and the many staff and faculty who have helped you along the way. No one gets to a point of great accomplishment alone, and they share in this special moment. You are fortunate to have such loyal supporters.
