Remembering Our Roots The discovery of high-grade ore deposits as far back as the early 1700s served as a boon to the development of this region. The “lead rush” attracted many people to the area, and new settlements began springing up around the newly built shafts. In 1821, Flat River was established, experiencing gradual growth in its early years and a boom in population with the ﬂourishing lead industry. Right next door, the Federal Lead Company, and its employees began building homes, resulting in the development of Leadington in the early 1900s. Both communities continued to grow alongside the lead industry, with Flat River gaining municipal incorporation in 1934 and Leadington in 1959. The communities of the Lead Belt were hit hard with the closing of the area’s lead mine in 1974; unemployment rates were among the highest in the state. These hard times led to the transformation of the area’s economy, as a shift in economic focus drew larger chain stores and new companies.

In 1991, the cities of Flat River, Rivermines, Elvins and Esther began discussing the possibility of consolidation as a way to make the area more economically lucrative. Within a couple of years, consolidation was approved by a landslide and the new “City of Park Hills” was born. Today, both Park Hills and Leadington have continued to develop, while still retaining their small-town charm and hometown values.

Business & Industry A diversified base of businesses and industries comprise the economy of Park Hills, Leadington and St. Francois County. Prominent manufacturers of glass and plastics, a leading dairy distributor and a major mechanical contracting firm are mixed with specialty shops, educational institutions and health care facilities. A gradually growing population has also resulted in a diverse workforce, led by highly educated and dedicated employees. The dynamic and progressive economic vitality of the area is supported by a strategic location in southeast Missouri, just outside of St. Louis. Things to Do: Recreation THINGS TO DO

The Park Hills and Leadington area is located within the Old Lead Belt and the world’s leading lead mining district. Park Hills hosts the Missouri Mines State Historic Site, a destination that depicts Missouri’s rich mining history. The site now features a museum, which displays restored underground mining equipment, mineral specimens and various geology exhibits. The Missouri Mines State Historic Site is located within the 8,238-acre St. Joe State Park. Recognized as Missouri’s third-largest

COLUMBIA PARK DISC GOLF COURSE Established in 2016, the Park Hills Disc Golf Course at the south end of Columbia Park lies in an area formerly used by the Columbia Mining Company and Federal Lead Company for railroad lines. The unique combination of forested terrain crossed by old rail beds has attracted tournament players from around the region. Amateurs and more serious players consider the Park Hills course one of the most challenging in Missouri. The front nine holes were designed to oﬀer easier play, winding around for a quick return to the parking lot for those seeking a short round. The back nine holes provide the most diﬃcult play and longer pars. The entire course includes separate tees designed for men and for women on each hole. Hole six has consistently been called the most challenging of the 18 holes.

Two communities share access to a number of additional tourist attractions in and around the county. The largest and most-visited local park is Columbia Park, which houses a public swimming pool, four shelters, a gazebo, a chapel, picnic facilities, a lighted walking trail and an outdoor amphitheater that sees numerous city-hosted concerts and outdoor movies annually.

Education CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Central R-III School District has been recognized for Distinction in Performance by the State Board of Education for 12 consecutive years. The high school has been recognized by the Southern Region Education Board as one of the top 10 high schools in Missouri for four consecutive years. U.S. News and World Report named Central as one of the top high schools in the nation. Each year, several seniors earn their Associate of Arts Degree prior to graduating by participating in a joint program with Mineral Area College. The football team is a consistent state playoff team, winning district championships seven of the last eight years. In the 2014-2015 school year, the Central Lady Rebels basketball team became Class-3 State Champions. The boys’ basketball team has won districts three of the last five years and each year several wrestlers and track participants compete for state championships. MINERAL AREA COLLEGE

Looking for convenient, affordable, highquality education that will put you to work or successfully transfer you to a four-year university? Look no further than Mineral Area College, near the Park Hills-Leadington exit on U.S. 67. The community college has its roots in Flat River Junior College, founded in 1922. Outreach centers are in Farmington, Fredericktown, Perryville and Potosi. Two-year degrees and certificates are offered in academic transfer programs and vocationaltechnical programs. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees are offered in partnership with Central Methodist University and University of Missouri-St. Louis. In Senior Scholars, those age 65 or older can take classes without having to pay for tuition.

Missouri Baptist University’s Farmington Regional Learning Center offers students the convenience of achieving an undergraduate or graduate degree at a location most convenient to them. Courses are offered Monday through Thursday evening and students have access to a computer lab during the office hours. Upper division courses offered are part of the 2+2 partnership program, meaning you can transfer general course-work credit to MBU. Classes at this location are taught by experienced faculty members from the university’s main campus and other select educators from St. Francois, Washington, Jefferson and Madison Counties.

Each year, the Chamber awards one $2,000 scholarship ($500 per semester renewable for up to four semesters) to one Central High School graduate planning to attend Mineral Area College, Central Methodist University or Missouri Baptist University. Community involvement plays an important role in the selection committee’s decision to choose the scholarship recipient. Community pride, beatiﬁcation and participation are all very important to the Chamber.

Another aspect of the scholarship emphasizes the importance of being an active member of the community by requiring the scholarship recipient to attend and/or volunteer at one Chamber Investor Meeting, and one Chambersponsored event, such as the Firecracker Run or Trivia Night.
