INTRODUCTION The City of Newton invites you to get to know Newton. “Get to Know Newton” is more than just a new logo; it is a new way to talk about Newton, Iowa. In many ways, Newton is typical of small, rural America. Newton is located right off Interstate 80, just 35 minutes from Des Moines — Iowa’s state capital. The population of Newton is nearly 16,000 and the town’s residents enjoy a high quality of life with admirable community amenities; including numerous parks with sporting complexes, stateof-the-art medical facilities, excellent schools and a community college. We have a charming town square, bike trails and a thriving arts community. Newton certainly has something for everyone. Our efforts as a community have not gone unnoticed as Newton received several awards and designations in 2015, including Peoples All Star Community from the Iowa League of Cities, “Project of the Year” for implementing Newton’s Future from the Iowa City Managers Association, and being designated as one of the “Top Ten Affordable Small Towns Where You’d Actually Want To Live,” by Realtor.com. If you’re new to town, we invite you to “Get to Know Newton.” If you’re a lifelong resident, we challenge you to “Get to Know Newton” again.

When you live in Newton, you don’t have to travel far for entertainment. The Iowa Speedway has the biggest, fastest races in Iowa. The Valle Drive-in Movie Theater is one of the four operating drive-in theaters in the state. At Historic Maytag Park, you can catch musical acts, take a dip in the Maytag Pool or get fit on the hike and bike trail. The Newton Community Theatre produces at least four shows a year, including comedies, musicals and classics. Not satisfied? We’re located only 30 minutes from entertainment venues in downtown Des Moines. Still not satisfied? We’re only an hour from Iowa City and Ames. When it comes to entertainment – if we don’t have it, we’re not far from it. If you’re considering Newton as a place to raise a family, there isn’t a better option. Newton public schools offer the extracurricular opportunities of a large district, but the

class sizes and personalized care of a small one. Through a partnership with DMACC, students can earn college credits by taking dual credit classes while still in high school. Newton schools offer a wide variety of extracurricular activities, and class sizes are small enough that students have the opportunity to participate in many activities. There is a private parochial school located in Newton as well. Many say that the best way to “Get to Know Newton” is by getting active in the community. Love art? Get involved with the Centre for Arts and Artists. Love school pride? Get involved with the Newton Booster Club or PTA. Love fitness? Get involved with the YMCA or Anytime Fitness. Don’t know where to start? Get connected with local volunteer activities at getconnected.unitedwayofjaspercounty.org. Some fear that in order to receive the benefits of a smaller community, such as a neighborly spirit and the ability to make a difference, you have to give up the convenience that comes with living in a larger city, but that’s not the case in Newton. Newton is home to two 24-hour stores, a 24-hour fitness facility, and several medical providers, including Skiff Medical Center.

Newton stands as not only a great place to live, but also a great place to visit. This vibrant city affords a peaceful, smaller-town lifestyle, while offering all the resources one may find in a bigger city. Welcome to Newton! ■

Business and

INDUSTRY Business and industry in Newton can be traced back to 1893 when Fred L. Maytag and a group of entrepreneurs went into business producing a safer threshing machine feeder. By 1902, the company was the largest feeder manufacturer in the world. In 1905, manufacturing expanded to include automobiles, corn huskers and, eventually, washing machines. At its peak in the mid-1900s, Maytag Corporation employed more 3,500 people locally and more than 29,000 worldwide. On March 29, 2006, federal regulators approved the sale of Maytag to Whirlpool Corporation. Shortly thereafter, Whirlpool announced the closing of the Maytag Corporate Headquarters,

resulting in a complete pullout of a Maytag/Whirlpool presence in Newton. Since 2008, Newton has attracted 15 new companies to the community. TPI Composites opened a 335,000-square-foot facility to make wind turbines. Trinity Structural Towers opened a renovated portion of the former Maytag manufacturing plant and started making towers for the wind industry. Combined, these and other new to Newton companies, created 1,850 new jobs. In the past 10 years, over 95 million dollars has been invested in urban renewal projects and commercial and industrial development. →

MAIN STREET Newton Main Street is an independent, 501(c)3 nonprofit downtown revitalization organization. Newton Main Street’s downtown revitalization strategy focuses on economic development through historic preservation. In Newton, the work of the Main Street program is geographically confined to the Newton Main Street District, which covers most of the Newton downtown area (from West 4th Street to East 4th Street, and from South 2nd Avenue to North 3rd Avenue). Newton became a Main Street community in the spring of 2014, after years of building the foundation for the program. Newton Main Street is one of many Main Street communities across the United States and one of 53 Main Street communities in Iowa. All Iowa Main Street communities are affiliated with Main Street Iowa, a division of the Iowa Economic Development Authority. Newton Main Street has earned National Main Street Center accreditation each year since its inception. Newton Main Street’s entire budget consists of donations from individuals, businesses and civic entities, which fund program activities, administration and one full-time director. Otherwise, Newton Main Street is a volunteer-driven organization – volunteers comprise the board of directors and four Main Street committees, which have the responsibility of planning, organizing and completing Newton Main Street’s revitalization projects. That is to say, Newton Main Street is in every way a true community-based organization. Newton Main Street’s revitalization strategy revolves around implementation of the Main Street four-point approach: economic restructuring, promotion, organization and design. The four-point approach stresses incremental progress toward reaching larger goals.

Design improves the Main Street District’s physical elements and creates a safe, inviting environment for shoppers, workers and visitors. Activities include assisting with planning renovations of historic buildings and public space improvements, developing sensitive design management practices, educating business and property owners about design quality and emphasizing the economic impact of historic preservation. Organization oversees internal program functions and keep stakeholders and the community informed and engaged. The committee raises money for activities and program administration, devises a communications strategy, budgets and manages program finances and recruits and retains volunteers. Newton Main Street’s successful projects include: a $75,000.00 Challenge Grant awarded from Main Street Iowa to restore the former Maytag Hotel Ballroom; returned the farmers market to the downtown; received a $15,000.00 technical assistance grant to complete the Downtown Market Analysis project; worked with city staff to install a pocket park and sidewalk connection to the public library; held a commercial space open house, Second-Story Tour, Magnetic Main Street Fundraiser and a Shop Small Holiday retail promotion; hosted a downtown mini golf tournament, downtown trick-or-treat and Cash Mobs, to name just a few. Newton Main Street will undoubtedly have much more in store for the Historic Downtown Main Street area in the coming future! ■

www.experiencenewton.com

Economic restructuring attains an in-depth understanding of the Main Street District’s economic condition, works to retain and expand existing businesses in an effort to offer a balanced commercial mix, recruits new businesses the market can support, works to convert underused commercial space into economically productive property and builds a commercial district that responds to the needs of today’s consumers.

Promotion markets the Main Street District as the center of commerce, culture and community life for residents and visitors alike. The committee creates image development campaigns, retail promotions and special events with the main goal of bringing more people to the Main Street District.

TOURISM Newton is the perfect Central Iowa getaway at just 30 miles from Des Moines. Whether you are interested in world-class auto racing at Iowa Speedway, like to enjoy community festivals, are an art and sculpture enthusiast, history buff, love to golf, enjoy shopping in an eclectic downtown atmosphere or want to tour the Maytag Dairy Farms and sample their famous Maytag Blue Cheese, Newton has many attractions making our community a destination and a perfect place for a fun-filled weekend, family reunions, or motor coach tours.

1930s home, and tools used by early settlers. The largest exhibit in the museum recognizes the growth of the Maytag Company through examples of many products it manufactured since the first washing machine was produced under the Maytag label in 1907. And don’t forget to check out the Blacksmith Shop.

Newton’s downtown historic district is on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s a place where the historic buildings house one-of-a-kind shops you’ll love to explore. While you shop, you’ll experience the architecture of years gone by, from our unique courthouse to historic churches.

One of the highlights in Newton is Maytag Dairy Farms. The dairy farm is home to the famous Maytag Blue Cheese used worldwide in the finest restaurants. Go out to Maytag Dairy Farms for a tour of the shipping and packaging area and don’t forget to sample some of their famous cheese.

If you enjoy spending time outside, Newton is the perfect place to visit. You’ll delight in nature at the Newton Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. Westwood Golf Course is a challenging municipal course with rolling hills on the front nine and an abundance of water and sand. Newton also has a beautifully shaded dog park to exercise your four-legged friend. And you can speed things up with world-class racing at Iowa Speedway. Enjoy IndyCar and NASCAR Xfinity races or watch go cart racing at the Newton Kart Klub just south of the high school.

Newton is such a distinctive place. You’ll never tire of exploring all we have to offer – from catching a movie on a “really big screen” at the Valle Drive-In; or on the two smaller screens at Capitol II Theatre in downtown Newton. Take a bike ride or walk the trails on the city hike and bike trails. Maytag Park houses Newton’s local pool, as well as the Fred Maytag Bowl, an ice-skating rink in the winter months and a spectacular disc golf course. And, the entire park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Art and culture are alive and thriving in Newton. We’re known for our nearly 90 pieces of art and sculptures located throughout the city, and you’ll find beautiful murals on many of our downtown buildings. Pick up a map at the Newton Visitor Center so you can take your own tour to enjoy them all. The Centre for Arts & Artists houses many artist studios and art, as well as a gift shop.

There is so much to do and see in Newton and the greater Newton area, but when you’re ready to sit back and relax, enjoy one of our many local restaurants, and then settle in for the night at a local hotel or a bed-and-breakfast.

blues music fans and musicians. The South Skunk Blues Society is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to preserving and cultivating blues music. The Society promotes public performance opportunities for blues artists, and seeks to increase the exposure to and appreciation of blues music by the general public. Concerts and special events will be listed at www. experiencenewton.com along with a community calendar featuring links to other chamber member organizations promoting the arts. The Arts Connection, a county wide arts council, supports a broad spectrum of endeavors to encourage and promote artistic expression in Jasper County. The Arts Connection provides financial support to arts organizations and sponsors an annual art show that also features performing musicians. The Iowa Sculpture Festival was established in 2003 to celebrate the development and growth of sculpture as the ultimate art form and to feature the artists who create it. Inspired by Iowa Sculpture Festival, the Newton Public Art Collection has grown to over 100 installations within the community for the enjoyment and education of residents and guests. In pursuit of these goals, the Iowa Sculpture Festival established in 2007 the Centre for Arts & Artists in Newton, Iowa, as the headquarters for its year-round educational programming on sculpture and fine art. Centre for Arts & Artists seeks to “Engage the Community in building appreciation of creativity”. With 10 working artist studios, classrooms, artists’ gift shop and clay/ kiln rooms, arts based activities are enriched by the instruction and encouragement of artists skilled in many diverse mediums. Serving youth through senior creative engagement, Centre for Arts & Artists also supports arts based outreach throughout Jasper County. ■

EDUCATION

Education has been a significant part of Newton since its beginnings in the 1850s. A host of childcare facilities, several schools in the Newton Community School District, one private parochial school and nearby higher education institutions provide outstanding education to students of the Greater Newton area. Several childcare centers are located in Newton, offering services for infants through 12 years of age. These facilities include the YMCA Child Care Center and Peck Child Development Center. For parents and students interested in receiving a private education, Newton Christian School provides educational instruction for kindergarten through eighth grades. It offers a small-school environment characterized by strong personal bonds, meaningful parent involvement, high-quality curriculum and instruction, and accountability for both staff and students. These key factors combine to create a culture of caring and rigor focused on hard work, high aspirations, and an expectation that every student will succeed. Newton Christian School’s motto, “Training to a Higher Standard”, is the guiding principle of the education provided.

Higher learning can be found within the Newton community, with the esteemed institutions of Des Moines Area Community College and Buena Vista University offering top-rate academic programs to local students. Students of all ages and academic backgrounds attend the Newton Campus of Des Moines Area Community College
