History

ot so long ago, thousands of buffalo roamed these vast grassy plains. Although many travelers passed through Lea County during the years when Europeans were exploring the New World, they were no match for the Native Americans who claimed the area as their own. From the Spanish conquerors of the 16th and 17th centuries, the Mexican rulers of the 18th century, to the Buffalo Soldiers of the post-Civil War era, to the fearless cowboys of the 19th century, all were daunted by the harsh landscape and by the skills and brilliant tactics of the native people who resisted the onslaught of these invaders. Fortunately, though, remnants of these former civilizations still remain in Lea County’s museums, folklore and anthropological digs. Much of the land is still as wild and untamed as it was when the nomadic Comanche and Apaches called it home. Arrowheads and pottery shards still lie undisturbed just below the surface, a paradise for amateur archaeologists. In fact, North America’s most ancient prehistoric human probably hunted bison and mammoth in and around Lea County at least 15,000 years ago. Both the Clovis Man and the Folsom Man left their spear points here. About 250 million years ago, the Llano Estacado was submerged. Although the shallow, inland sea slowly evaporated, layer after layer of dead marine life slowly decayed underneath, resulting in huge oil and natural gas reserves that have made Lea County one of the richest centers of natural resources in the world. Later

geological changes would add an even more important resource to the Llano Estacado: the Ogallala aquifer, a huge, underground lake of cold, pure water. Although the Native Americans cleverly hid this secret source of water for many years, eventually the stubborn determination of 18th century pioneers led to the rediscovery of this essential source of life. By the 1880s, Lea County had become a haven for cattle ranchers who settled near the scattered watering holes. They were quickly followed by the even more tenacious homesteaders, who learned that plentiful water existed just a few feet below ground; hence, ubiquitous windmills now dot the landscape. Many ranchers in the Hobbs area still depend on the simple power of these windmills to water their herds. While the never-ending procession of settlers brought stability and permanent encampments to the Llano Estacado, the Southwest remained a place of fiercely independent and selfsufficient people. In fact, New Mexico was not even admitted to statehood until 1912, making it the 47th state to join the Union and one of the last to relinquish its association with the Western frontier. Lea County and its five rural municipalities have comprised a local economy based almost solely on petroleum for over eight decades. This area has thrived during prosperous booms and suffered during ruinous busts. An unflinching, entrepreneurial spirit has sustained generations of Lea County families, who have reliably delivered a cornerstone commodity to our 191 163

Communities Hobbs Hobbs, home to roughly 36,000 residents, considers itself a community that helps fuel America, seeing as it is home to some of the largest oil and gas reserves in the world. Such global recognition has resulted in an economic upswing for the community. As the city, local leaders are looking to its roots to keep the area vibrant yet true to self. Hobbs’ roots in ranching and agriculture remain present and robust today. In addition, Hobbs is known for its impressive school system, which includes two new elementary schools. The school district’s goal is to develop lifelong learners and community leaders. Local higher education options include New Mexico Junior College and University of the Southwest. The city is also home to the Veteran’s Memorial Complex, the Western Heritage Museum and Rockwind Community Links, a 27-hole municipal golf course. City officials say a main goal is to encourage physical activity to ensure the community’s vitality, as evidenced by plans for The CORE, a $65 million health and wellness center. There’s also Taylor Ranch, a 240-acre park with a pond, amphitheater, a tennis complex, restaurants, go-carts and miniature golf. Other activities in town include art shows, live music, family festivals and an annual community talent show. Hobbs truly is a place with beauty and diversity on many levels.

Eunice Residents of Eunice give their “stamp” of approval to the small town of about 3,000 that got its unusual start as a post office for area ranchers. The town was officially established in 1909, and since then, it has evolved into a close-knit community. Education is part of the town’s fabric, with its first schoolhouse having opened in 1910. Community spirit is alive and well here, as evidenced by its various civic organizations, senior center, and a presidential-award-winning library. It also has a community center that provides facilities for meetings and community events. Eunice serves as a shortcut for travelers en route to the Carlsbad Caverns, Artesia, Roswell and the New Mexico mountain resort areas. Stopping by? Squeeze in a round at Eunice Municipal Golf Course – a 9-hole facility with a driving range and practice green. Or check out local parks such as Turner Park, which offers a walking trail, playground, pool, baseball field and rodeo arena. In addition, Stephen’s Park features RV hookups, a basketball court and walking areas.

Jal Jal is an extremely small community with a big job: to welcome visitors who cross into New Mexico from the southeast.

“The Trail Ahead” is a 100-foot metal sculpture depicting cattle drives. It greets those heading into town. With just more than 2,000 residents, Jal prides itself as a “small town with a big heart.” Amenities here include Jal Lake Park, a main attraction among a 10acre recreational oasis that sits in the middle of a desert. The man-made lake is shaped to spell the name of the city when viewed from above, making it a landmark for pilots. It resembles the old cattle brand that inspired the Jal name. The watering hole is stocked for year-round fishing. Other activities offered include tennis, basketball, and picnicking. There’s also the 9-hole Jal Country Club, which is a semi-private golf course that opened in 1950. LPGA Hall-of-Famer Kathy Whitworth perfected her swing on these links. Jal Public Schools is a cornerstone here. Recent projects in the district include the construction of a new elementary and middle school, as well as major renovations to the high school.

Lovington Take a dash of temperate climate, a spoonful of scenic beauty, and a pinch of clean water and air, and you’ve got the recipe for Lovington. The town, which is the Lea County seat, prides itself in being uncrowded, safe, friendly and progressive. The town is more than 100 years old. Its first business – the “Jim B. Love Grocery Store,” which also housed a post office – was erected in 1908. Back in the day, the main focus was on ranching and farming. In 1950, oil made its mark on the local economy and labor force when the Denton pool, about nine miles northeast of town, was discovered. It didn’t take long for that pool to grow to more than 90 flowing wells. Oil is a big part of what draws folks to town – and it keeps many here. But for the nearly 10,000 people who live here, the weather is a major bonus. Think warm summer days, cool nights and mild winters. Lovington is unique and welcoming to first-timers and returning guests alike.

Tatum The town of Tatum has deep roots despite its modest numbers. Founded in 1909, the town has about 800 residents. Folks here are known for working hard and taking pride in their history. Main jobs in these parts include cattle-ranching and oilfield working. Tatum Municipal Schools provide an excellent education. Smack dab in the village center sits one of its main draws: the popular Senior Citizens Center, as well as a number of businesses. Key gathering spots in Tatum include the community center and community park. Another local service provided is at the Tatum Community Library, which contains about 9,300 volumes for residents to peruse and check out. Tatum is home to an RV campground. Additionally, visitors can come to town by foot or air, via the Tatum Airport. From there, they can grab a bite to eat at one of several restaurants, some of which offer tasty, authentic Mexican cuisine.

Things to Do Around the Area  ARTESIA, NM – Artesia is noted for its Artesian Water Wells and some of the old historical homes and buildings that were part of the new frontier. For those living in or visiting neighboring towns and cities – Artesia, Carlsbad, Denver City (Texas), Eunice, Jal, Lovington, Seminole (Texas) and Tatum – Hobbs provides a closer and easier shopping day trip than driving to El Paso (Texas), Lubbock (Texas), Midland (Texas) or Roswell. Whether dining in one of Lea County’s mom-and-pop diners or one of the nationally branded restaurants, dining in Hobbs is a culinary treat. You will find menus and a price range to meet any situation or budget. Plus, because you’re in an oil town, the portions

are normally larger and cooked to your taste. From morning coffee to late dinner, you will find dining in Hobbs to be both a friendly and welcome experience.

Weather & Climate

obbs has an average elevation of 3,600 feet above sea level and an average mean temperature of 63 degrees. The climate in Hobbs offers four seasons with mild variations in the accompanying weather pattern. The summers are very warm but with low humidity, ideal for all outdoor activities, such as the famous Hobbs August Nites event and one of the largest county fairs in the state. Hobbs hosts a number of sporting tournaments throughout the year. Fall brings warm days and cool evenings, perfect for the inevitable Friday night football or soccer games held at the various city parks and high school, or a Saturday and Sunday afternoon of barbecuing with friends and family. Hobbs enjoys mild winters with crisp days, chilly nights and an occasional snowfall; even so, the area golf course and tennis courts are open year-round because the moderate weather encourages sports enthusiasts to become all-season athletes.

In addition, outdoor Christmas parades are part of the total holiday celebration. The holiday season kicks off with community home lighting/decoration and the business district having Santa Claus for the children. A must-see is Christmas in the Desert, featuring large holiday lighted displays at McAdams City Park. We mark the end of summer with the Annual Southwest Cowboy Celebration, called the Staked Plains Round-Up. The event brings the spirit of the Old West and country life in the modern age. Spring arrives early, with warm, sunshine-soaked days coupled with mild evenings, wonderful weather for countywide baseball games and golf tournaments. Spring buds appear in February, many fruit trees bloom in March and lawns are already green by April. This beautiful climate creates ideal conditions for people who thrive in a mild, dry environment. In fact, we bask in sunshine more than 320 days a year. Free from the smog and traffic jams of more populated areas, Hobbs benefits from its proximity to mountains and snow skiing only a few hours to the west in the spectacular Rocky Mountains, two international airports a few hours to the east in Texas and an international border with Mexico within driving distance to the southwest.

that which is on top is used to its fullest. Each community has public-operated swimming pools, several of them with water park settings and picnic grounds close by. Again, because of the weather, swimming is a year-round activity, with summer seeing the lion’s share of pool usage. There are several fishing holes in the area, with fish stocked by the New Mexico Fish and Game Department. Fishing licenses are required for adults and teens; children under 11 can fish without a license. The early morning and evening brings out bicyclists, walkers and runners. Because of the low humidity, many people take advantage of the cool mornings and evenings to exercise and stretch their legs. Hobbs is noted for its flat surfaces and dedicated jogging, biking and walking trails. This is a safe and healthy activity for young and old alike. Indoor sports also make up and take up a lot of Hobbs residents’ and guests’ time and energy. From organized bridge games to formal painting sessions, there is something for everyone who wants to stay indoors. We pride ourselves on having some of the best facilities in New Mexico for our senior residents and children. Monthly schedules of events and activities can be found on the various city web sites.

obbs offers many forms of recreational and leisure opportunities to its residents and guests. The great weather allows many outdoor activities throughout the year. Residents enjoy all forms of organized sports and several sports organizations are available for all age groups, including swimming, archery, golf, hang gliding/soaring, hunting, fishing, horseback riding, jogging, bike riding, basketball, baseball, softball, t-ball, tennis, roller skating, bowling and soccer, to list a few. Sports in Hobbs are only limited by your ability and imagination. For the auto enthusiast, the local drag strip offers both head-to-head drag racing and timed (bracketed) drag racing. All car classes are accepted and spectators are welcomed. For off-road vehicle owners, there are plenty of opportunities to drive your vehicles. Make sure that if it is private land to get permission, though much of Lea County is either state or federal land. Organized motorcycle groups are welcomed to Hobbs and several events just for motorcycles are scheduled throughout the year. We have several motorcycle dealers in the area to take care of problems that may arise. Water sports are another great way to experience Hobbs. Most of Lea County’s water is underground in our Ogallala aquifer, but

ur education is second to none. All five municipalities boast statewide and even national honors in music, debate, agriculture, science, math, essay writing and all varieties of sports, including rodeo, football, basketball, golf, baseball, swimming, soccer, tennis, track and wrestling. Many of the area churches also sponsor youth activities to build leadership and team participation. Recently, the city of Hobbs opened a new teen building dedicated to providing a safe and staffed facility for the area youth. The Boys and Girls Club provides after-school and Saturday programs for children.

Hobbs Municipal Schools Hobbs Municipal Schools has transformed public education by raising academic standards, lowering drop-out rates and engaging students in hands-on learning. HMS is one of the few districts to incorporate a strong Advancement Placement program in all of its secondary schools. The AP program offers unique monetary awards for students and teachers based on national AP testing results. Almost 40 percent of students are enrolled in Pre-AP or AP classes. A large number of students also take the national AP exam. In addition, HMS believes that exposing students to the latest in communication tools prepares them for a work world in which theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be asked to adapt and quickly change with the technological times. ď&#x201A;&#x2020;

Hobbs schools also have a rich athletic history boasting state and district championship teams in almost every sport. But HMS students who participate in extracurricular activities – including band and choir – must maintain a minimum grade point average and sign a contract in which they pledge to remain drug and alcohol free. Finally, HMS recognizes that art instruction gives students a window on the world while also stimulating creativity and problem-solving skills. For that reason, an elementary fine arts program offers students musical, band and artistic instruction as well as the opportunity to perform in large-scale drama productions every year.

New Mexico Junior College Known as “The JC,” New Mexico Junior College was the first independent junior college in New Mexico. Since 1965, it has been a leader in innovative educational programs, high school dual credit education, industrial and professional workforce training and a critical player in the region’s economy. Situated on 219 acres, the college has about 3,000 students. The JC offers AA and AAS degrees, along with certifications in various fields. The Training and Outreach department is ranked No. 2 in New Mexico among all community colleges. It is a national leader in energy education and training, for both the oil industry and nuclear technology. Students in the nursing program have been ranked in the top 10 percent of all nursing students in the nation. The JC also features athletic programs, including men’s and women’s basketball, track & field, baseball, golf and rodeo, winning many regional and national championships.

ea County is noted for its rich oil and natural gas reserves, attracting international oil-related companies such as ConocoPhillips, Chevron and Baker Hughes. Although the economy has benefited from the enormous wealth of the gas and oil reserves, the business community is diversified enough to create a balanced community with major stores mixed in with small, individually owned shops. The telecommunications business is booming, with Windstream Telecommunications, TDS and LEACO Rural Telephone Service prepared for new markets as Lea County continues to grow. Tourism is increasing in importance in Lea County, with several new national-brand motels and restaurants building to accommodate the casino and horse track. The casino and race track attract more than 2.2 million people per year to play, be entertained and watch

world-class horse racing. This is the only non-Native American-owned casino built as a Las Vegas-style casino in New Mexico. Live horse racing is scheduled for the months of September through December in Hobbs. This time of the year has great weather for both the horses and spectators. There is always simulcast (televised) horse racing every day at the race track. The location of the URENCO USA uranium-enrichment facility in Lea County indicates the high-tech proficiency of the area. Health Care Lea Regional Medical Center Lea Regional Medical Center opened its doors in 1974 and has been providing quality care to the residents of Lea County for over 40 years. LRMC is licensed for more than 200 beds and offers: cardiac care, dialysis services, general and outpatient surgery, laboratory services, radiological services, emergency department services, a skilled nursing facility, behavioral health unit, and women’s services (labor and delivery as well as gynecological care). In 2014 LRMC earned the Joint Commission’s Accreditation for Chest Pain Center; one of only eight hospitals in the State of New Mexico. In 2015, LRMC became the first and remains the only hospital in the State of New Mexico to earn the Joint Commission accreditation in Heart Failure. LRMC is also a certified Stroke Center. In 2017, Lea Regional Medical Center opened a cardiac catheterization laboratory and offers: interventional and emergency cardiology services, coronary stents, nuclear stress test, holter monitors, pacemaker insertions and peripheral vascular intervention.

Nor-Lea Hospital District Nor-Lea Hospital District is a nonprofit, community-based health care organization that owns and operates Nor-Lea Medical Clinics; Nor-Lea

Professional Physicians Center; Nor-Lea Cancer Center; Nor-Lea Home Medical and Nor-Lea General Hospital, a 25-bed Medicare-certified facility. Nor-Lea Hospital District currently employs more than 400 full-time and part-time, well qualified and loyal individuals to meet the needs of healthcare in our community. These employees are proud to offer quality care with a community atmosphere for good customer service delivered with respect and dignity. Nor-Lea General Hospital has an average daily census of 7.5 combined inpatient and observation stays. Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance and private pay are accepted for services rendered. The emergency room is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. About 900 individuals utilize this service per month.

Presbyterian Medical Services PMS – Hobbs Family Health Center has been serving Hobbs and the surrounding area since 2007. The health center provides primary care services for adults and children, including immunizations, acute illness care, preventive medicine, family planning, breast and cervical cancer screening, prescriptions, chronic illness care (diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma, etc.) and laboratory services. Hobbs Family Health Center is a member of Presbyterian Medical Services’ statewide network of community-based health centers, working to serve the diverse populations of New Mexico providing quality, affordable health care. The health center accepts Medicare, Medicaid, most private insurance and, for the uninsured, a sliding fee scale is available. hurches abound in Hobbs, reflective of the close-knit communities, with a focus on family values and spiritual worship. In the pioneer days, one building might have served as both a schoolhouse during the week and a worship center on the weekend. In fact, after the post office and the school, one of the first buildings to appear in Lea County was a permanent church building. Today, each municipality in Lea County revolves around conservative religious values represented by the various religious denominations and supported by active congregations. Spiritual worship remains an important part of the community and those seeking a religious home can choose from several dozen churches of all denominations. The spiritual community shows its support by working hand-in-hand

with such outreach programs as the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity. In addition, many churches sponsor singles’ groups, youth programs, musical opportunities, vacation Bible schools, missionary work and ecumenical activities during special services at Christmas and Easter. Sunday morning in Hobbs finds many of its residents in small groups studying the Bible or their book of worship during Sunday school and then worshiping together as a church family. Hobbs is noted for its annual Prayer Breakfast sponsored by the University of the Southwest. This has become the region’s largest day of prayer for our county and its leaders. All denominations are welcome to participate and share in this day of thanksgiving.
