Over 80% of local councils expect cuts in their parks budgets

A new survey on the state of local authority parks and greenspace services finds 85% of those surveyed are expecting budgets cuts of at least 5%, with almost 30% expecting cuts of over 15%.

This, despite the survey finding close to two-thirds of those surveyed are experiencing a growing number of visitors to their parks.

The survey, conducted annually by the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) and now in its thirteenth year, found that 83% of those surveyed said budget cuts have led to reduced levels of maintenance and increases in unmaintained land.

The survey also found that almost three-quarters of respondents either agreed or agreed strongly that ‘the squeeze on public sector

resources is affecting parks and green spaces disproportionately to other service areas’.

Of the local authorities surveyed:

• Biodiversity is now identified as the main environmental priority for parks services at 96%, up from 89.8% in 2022. The second highest priority is litter control at 70%.

• 71% expect training budgets to stay the same in the next 12 months – only 5% reported increases.

• 43% of respondents said they currently have apprenticeship schemes – An 18% drop since 2022 (61%).

• The number of respondents receiving income ‘through friends of parks groups’ shows a significant decrease to 37% as opposed to 51% in 2022, which may

be a refl ection that some Friends Groups have not fully become fully active after the pandemic.

Speaking about the fi ndings, Mo Baines, APSE Chief Executive, said: “As our roads become congested and financial constraints in the home mean people are more in need of free access to pleasant and accessible greenspaces, the demand from the public for access to greenspaces continues to grow louder.

“However, APSE’s survey makes clear there is a real belief amongst parks professionals that service quality may start to be seriously affected because of the ongoing pressures on budgets, changes to maintenance frequencies and a need for investment, particularly as visitor

numbers are remaining high and, in many cases, increasing. What the survey also shows is that local authorities are successfully introducing new and innovative ways to sustainably manage parks. Whether this be through income generation, partnerships or alternative forms of funding, the most recent being the opportunities which may arise from Biodiversity Net Gain. It is

hoped that central governments and other stakeholders will, in recognition of this innovation and best practice, provide the necessary support for local authorities and their parks managers in developing a sustainable future for the UK’s parks and the multitude of benefits they bring.”

EGO builds on Z6 success with range expansion

Following the global success of the world’s first battery-powered zero-turn ride-on mower, EGO Power Plus is expanding its range with the introduction of two new ride-on mowers.

Ideal for homeowners with large plots of land, both mowers – the ZT4200E-S and the ZT5200E-L – build upon the accomplishments of the original Z6 (ZT4201E-L).

Standout features including EGO’s Peak Power ™ technology, intuitive screen, and three versatile driving modes remain on the new models whilst fresh features have also been introduced.

One of the new models – the ZT4200E-S – drives like a car and turns like a zero-turn ride-on mower with its innovative steering wheel system whilst the other – the ZT5200E-L – offers a considerably larger three-blade option with a 312cm fabricated cutting deck.

Vince Brauns, Group Product Manager at EGO, said: “We are so delighted with the success of our first zero-turn ride-on mower that we are now introducing two more to the range. While the two mowers share many of the same features as the first Z6, including the option of three driving modes and versatile blade speeds, we wanted to ensure that the range

was more accessible to a wider demographic of homeowners.

“By introducing a steering wheel model, we are opening up the zero-turn ride-on platform to users who would prefer that mechanism to a lap bar.

“As well as performance and accessibility we have also added some useful usability features such as putting the battery level gauge in a better line of sight and improved comfort through an air-ride seat, USB connection, and cruise control for those who need to dedicate a good few hours tending to their lawn.”

The new survey from APSE on local authority budgeting for parks and green spaces certainly helped to confirm what many in the industry have suspected for some time.

It has been clear for a while that despite the growing popularity of parks and demand for high quality local green spaces, the funding gap has been growing significantly wider with each passing year. But the detail of the survey of councils - 85% of those surveyed are expecting budgets cuts of at least 5%, with almost 30% expecting cuts of over 15% - was still a stark and sobering wake up call.

How we as an industry help to draw attention to this widening funding gap and campaign for central Government to acknowledge the issues being faced by councils and address them proactively remains the vitally important next step. The work of APSE and a large number of other industry bodies will be crucial in that process. But so will everyone within the industry itself, we must start to support such campaigns and add our voices to those calling for a more cohesive and sustainable long-term strategy for our parks and green spaces. This month we have also seen a number of other industry bodies come together to issue an important updated position statement. In our regular Professional Groundscare we highlight the work of The GMA, SAPCA and many others in setting out clear recommendations for the industry’s approach to 3G sports surfaces. It is an important development and the statement itself is well worth a read.

Elsewhere, we take a look at the wide variety of Grass Cutting Machinery now available, as well a spotlight on brushcutters. There is also a focus on the increasing use of battery power across a range of vehicles, machinery and tools. Along with our usual round up of industry news, product launches and case studies, we continue to look ahead to what remains a busy Spring, Summer an Autumn for the industry and some of the key events in the coming months.

Applications open for £1m jobs programme

To mark The King’s coronation the Heritage Fund has boosted the New to Nature initiative with an additional £1m of funding.

The scheme – developed to mark The Queen’s platinum jubilee last year – has already got 10 young people into 12-month fixed-term roles in nature and landscape organisations across the UK. Nearly 60 more are now starting new placements.

This latest investment will create another 25 roles – bringing the total to 95.

Research shows that less than 7% of environment sector professionals are from diverse ethnic communities. The impact of the pandemic on young people’s employment

prospects has further widened existing skills gaps and shortages in the UK.

New to Nature is providing high quality and potentially life-changing experiences for marginalised people struggling to get jobs. It’s also supporting the natural heritage sector to be more inclusive and diverse.

The trainees being funded are working in organisations including WWF-UK, the Zoological Society of London, The Woodland Trust, Bat Conservation Trust, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the National Trust. Their responsibilities range from deskbased roles in communications and social media to outdoor conservation roles.

Eilish McGuinness, Chief Executive of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “New to Nature is a brand-new approach for us, supporting our strategic commitment to nature and inclusion.

“Our added investment of £1m reflects the success of the project so far. These people are the future of nature conservation, and we are delighted to support them.”

New to Nature is being delivered by Groundwork UK in partnership with The Prince’s Trust, Disability Rights UK, Mission Diverse and Youth Environmental Service.

Real turf only for The Landscape Zone

Organisers of The Landscape Zone, part of GroundsFest, have revealed that they are supporting the ‘Say No to Plastic Grass & Plants’ campaign. As a result, there will be no exhibitors within The Landscape Zone representing artificial turf, plants or flowers.

The ‘Say No to Plastic Grass & Plants’ campaign has been launched by the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) and is being supported by the Royal Horticultural Society and the Landscape Institute. The aim is to raise awareness of the huge environmental damage these products cause and to debunk the claims that they are harmless.

Commenting on the decision to back the campaign, The Landscape Zone’s Sales Manager Jess McCabe said: “We are pleased to announce that The Landscape Zone will only represent real turf. There is mounting evidence that plastic grass and plants are destroying our wildlife and are contributing to greenhouse gas emissions in their production. The Landscape Zone wholeheartedly supports the SGD’s campaign, and we

encourage everyone to use beautiful, natural solutions instead.” The Landscape Zone has already been warmly received by the industry. Attendees can expect to see a wide variety of brands at the event, and just some of the latest names to confirm their presence include Ronjack Products, James Coles & Sons

Nurseries, The Landscape Academy, QuickHedge, Lindum Turf, mmcité, Aquacut, Platipus and Boot and Dart.

The event, which will take place at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire on 20 and 21 September, is set to spotlight the latest landscaping technologies, solutions, and

Incentivise gardeners to help cities tackle climate change

Homeowners should be rewarded to garden sustainably, to help combat the damaging effects of climate change in cities and promote a healthier urban landscape.

According to new research from the University of Sheffield, policymakers should offer incentives, such as council tax or water bill discounts, to encourage gardeners to use environmentally sensitive techniques to help

combat climate change in cities and boost communities’ health and wellbeing.

The new study, published by Professor Ross Cameron in Urban Forestry and Urban Greening, highlights that, as gardens become increasingly important in the battle against the extreme effects of climate change, financial incentives should be considered to ensure gardens are well stocked with plants.

Professor Cameron said: “Gardens account for a third of all our urban areas and are vital spaces in terms of keeping our buildings and city environments cool in summer, absorbing rain to avoid flash flooding and providing an important refuge for wildlife.

“Gardens need to be green and full of plants to be beneficial to the local environment, and some types of garden are more beneficial than others.”

“The paradox is that many gardens are not actually green and some trends in garden design can be very damaging for the urban environment.

“We have paved them over to house the car, or provide sterile patio space; factors that increase urban temperatures and increase flooding risk.”

The science-backed solution to sustainable weed control

The decision to reduce or eradicate the use of herbicides may be taken for many reasons, but with a wide range of alternatives available, how can facilities be assured that a non-chemical option is going to provide a viable solution?

To provide confidence, Foamstream has been the subject of numerous independently controlled studies conducted by the University of Pisa, University of Athens and Cornell University, together with The US Department of Natural Resources and the Austrian Institute of Technology – all of which highlight the comparable or superior performance of Foamstream when compared to glyphosate.

An ever-increasing body of evidence indicates the substantial negative impact on nature, human beings and the environment caused by the existing level of herbicide use. Factor in that the amount of herbicide-resistant weeds is also on the rise, and green space managers are potentially having to increase the number of spray operations they conduct in any given period.

The patented Foamstream process combines hot water and an organically-derived biodegradable foam, delivered through one of Weedingtech’s range of machines.

The active ingredient is the hot water, with the foam acting as an ‘insulation blanket’, preventing the heat from escaping and

keeping the water in the ‘kill zone’ (temperatures of 57o and above) for longer. The heat penetrates the waxy outer layer of the leaf, travels down the stem and into the roots – killing or severely damaging the plant and causing it to die. In addition to eradicating the plant, Foamstream also sterilises surrounding seeds and spores that haven’t yet germinated, helping to reduce future weed growth.

Leo de Montaignac, CEO of Weedingtech commented: “We’d welcome further research by any other interested universities and organisations to carry out further testing of our eco-friendly weed control technology in other settings.”

You’ll never look back with an ISEKI

A brand-new ISEKI tractor has not only saved Osterley Cricket Club a significant amount of time and money, but it has also helped its ground rating climb into the top three rankings.

Established in 1940, Osterley Cricket Club, in Southall, specialises in cricket, football and social gatherings. Somewhat of a hub for the local community it boasts 2.2 hectares of grounds. This consists of two cricket pitches which convert to seven football pitches during the winter.

Nadeem Chowdhry, Chairman of Osterley Cricket Club, explained why the Club was in the market for a new tractor.

“We started looking for a new tractor because we were using an old ride-on mower and a 1960’s cylinder mower which had all kinds of hydraulic issues,” he said. “It was an important decision and so we did a lot of research.

“We selected ISEKI because of the brand’s renowned build quality and ease of use. After deciding on the brand, we then spoke to several dealers and the one that stood out was RT Machinery. They understood our challenges, they pin-pointed the ISEKI tractor for us, and the presale and after sale service was phenomenal.”

Based on RT Machinery’s recommendation, Nadeem decided that the ISEKI TLE3400 was the perfect fit. The TLE3400 is ISEKI’s premium economy tractor. This 38 horse-power tractor has a three-speed hydrostatic transmission and a lift capacity of 1000 kg. It is supplied with agricultural or turf tyres as standard. An optional front loader is also available. Ideal on the farm, an estate, or sports pitches, it is an all-round

tractor for all those tasks that just need doing – from muck scraper to harrow or mower to loader, it’s capable of doing it all.

According to Nadeem, Osterley Cricket Club has not looked back since purchasing this unique tractor.

“It used to take our groundsman two whole days, to cut, stripe and tidy up – but since purchasing the ISEKI tractor this has been reduced to just two hours,” he said. “The cost of running it, on fuel alone, is six times cheaper as well. This tractor is fantastic to store because it is

compact, and it is so versatile. We use it with lots of different attachments such as a grass cutting deck, a verticutting unit, a scarifier and all sorts of other attachments.”

Revitalising urban spaces with MTX

Wood is often cited for its positive impact on health and wellbeing, and more landscapers and gardeners are using it to uplift urban spaces.

MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME (MTX) from MEDITE SMARTPLY is an excellent product for outdoor furniture, planters and high-end fencing. MTX has outstanding durability and dimensional stability and is resistant to rot and fungal decay.

Sustainably produced using wood from sustainably managed forests in Ireland, MTX offers landscape designers an environmentally conscious alternative to plastics or metals for installations and is guaranteed up to 50 years above ground and 25 years in ground. MTX is especially beneficial in environments where humidity and varying weather are usually concerns. MTX was the star product at the RHS Chelsea

Reimagining rainwater at Hampton Court

With water shortages a growing concern in Britain, ACO is partnering with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and Tom Massey, garden designer featured in BBC Two’s Your Garden Made Perfect, to reimagine rainwater as a resource for positive use rather than simply being disposed of.

Concerns about water quantity and quality are often in the news.

As the climate crisis continues, droughts are becoming more frequent as temperatures climb past 40°C, while extreme rainfall events cause extensive flooding.

Domestic practice still tends to discharge rainwater runoff into storm drains, while drinkingquality water that is in short supply is used in both the kitchen and the garden. Supporting water conservation efforts, ACO is

delighted to sponsor the RHS Resilient Garden at this year’s RHS Hampton Court Flower Festival. This show garden transforms an aesthetically and environmentally unimaginative domestic plot into a biodiverse garden resilient to climate change. The garden is being designed by Massey and built by Landscape Associates. Domestic rainwater management is central to the RHS Resilient Garden, with ACO products featuring in the show garden and on the adjoining ACO House & Garden Stand.

The stand shows how residential roofs, patios and driveways can become catchment areas that direct rainwater into systems for storage and reuse. For example, ACO’s RainDrain is used to feed a rainwater garden that overflows into ACO’s StormBrixx

soakaway, In this way, rainwater enhances the show garden for people and wildlife and is dispersed on-site rather than into the sewerage system.

The garden showcases ACO’s GroundGuard, which both stabilises gravel for access and allows rainwater into the ground. ACO’s RoofBloxx create reservoirs in green roofs and rainwater planters, slowing water’s journey through the property and plants to evaporate and lower temperatures in the immediate surroundings.

Peter Ridgway, Brand Development Director from ACO House and Garden, said:

“The Flower Festival is always a pleasure to attend and this year we’re thrilled to be working with the RHS and Tom Massey to expand the conversation on

rainwater in our homes. We all know water is an issue of increasing national importance, but struggle to achieve solutions that benefit both our own homes and the wider eco-system. We invite everyone with an interest in gardening and nature to the ACO

Flower Show in 2022. It was the main material used for the centrepiece of the MEDITE SMARTPLY Building the Future Garden, which was inspired by natural vertical rock strata. It was designed by multi-awardwinning landscape architect and garden designer Sarah Eberle was heralded as a celebration of the brand’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and wellness. The use of MTX also demonstrated the panel throughout its life cycle and highlighted the versatility of engineered wood panels.

The Edible Bus Stop an awardwinning landscape architecture and design consultancy, also specified MTX, in partnership

with Decorum London for a collection of distinctive planters at Hammersmith station. Bradmore Square was reinvigorated to create a calm, relaxing space that encouraged people to stop and spend time in the area. MTX was specified for its longevity, versatility and easy machinability.

MEDITE SMARTPLY continuously adapts products and services to suit end users’ needs whilst maintaining a consistent stance on sustainability and creating environmentallyconscious products that add value throughout the supply chain.

Stand to discuss reimagining rainwater and explore solutions.

We want to hear which solutions capture your imagination by taking our survey to enter our draw to win water-themed prizes to benefit your back garden.”

The Royal Horticultural Society Flower Festival will be held at Hampton Court from the 4th to the 9th of July. ACO will be at Stand HC277.

Before petrol driven post drivers the options for fencing in awkward locations were much more limited – either a hand-held rammer, or a hydraulic whacker were the options.

Ten years ago, the Easy Petrol Post Driver came on the market and made fencing that bit easier.

It knocks in a huge variety of posts - the most popular application is timber 3-4” stock fencing, but this has been changing with more contractors turning to metal posts for fence longevity.

Many contractors own a tractor mounter post driver which quickly covers a lot of ground, but what about when its too steep, trees are hanging low, or the ground is too wet?

The EPPD provides the answer, filling the gaps when big machinery can’t get access.

It has been tested in rugged commercial environments worldwide, with new users saying goodbye to their driveall’s once and for all.

It is also a great addition to a landscape contractors arsenal for:

• Tree stakes from Whips up to Heavy Standards, using all sizes of timber stake

• Tree shelter supports, using 1” or 2” square stakes

• Ground anchor insertion for Semi-Mature tree planting

• Support retaining walls with Angle Irons, Metal Pins, or Scaffold Poles

• Path Edging pegs, using 2” square stakes

P1 Contractors Ltd and urban design architects, OOBE, have enlisted Yorkshire commercial nursery, Johnsons of Whixley Ltd, to help enhance the grounds of a new residential development, Blindwells in East Lothian.

Blindwells site owner and developer Hargreaves Land plans to transform Blindwells from a

brownfield site into a rich, biodiverse landscape with thousands of plants, trees and meadow grasslands that will enhance the grounds of the residential development and surrounding areas by increasing aesthetic value and increasing habitat opportunities for local wildlife.

P1’s works included the soft landscaping of all the main infrastructure and structure blocks within phases one and two. Johnsons supply of plants so far in phases one and two has included over 25,000 Hedging and tree transplants, over 2,000 shrubs

and over 160 mature trees. Native hedging varieties such as Acer campestre, Crataegus monogyna and Prunus spinosa were used in the project to create natural screening and structure as well as providing food and shelter for wildlife.

Over 40 Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’ trees were planted, a variety that has become known as the perfect street tree with clouds of white flowers appearing in spring, and in autumn its leaves turn to shades of red and purple.

The professional way to protect

With spring in full swing and summer just around the corner, now is the ideal time to assess any winter damage to wooden fence posts.

Often, rot can cause fence posts to deteriorate dramatically, resulting in instability - and repairing damage that occurs below ground can be challenging.

To address this problem, professionals can take

preventative measures by using barrier sleeves that create an air and watertight seal before post installation. Postsaver’s new Pro-Wrap rot protection range, for example, offers a dual-layer wrap that locks in preservatives, preventing rot for up to 20 years. For more information, visit

Helly Hansen Workwear PPE products are manufactured, tested, and certified according to the harmonised standards under PPE Regulation.

The products provide protection and prevention against possible accidents or injuries when working under conditions involving cold, heat, flame, rain, reduced visibility and so on.

The PPE is classified according to three risk categories based on risks for user health and safety: Category 1 includes exclusively minimal risks such as rain, cool environments, or electrostatic charge.

Category 2 includes risks that are not covered by Category I

or Category III. That may cover dangers in reduced visibility or cold environments.

Category 3 includes risks that may cause irreversible damage to health or place the user to mortal danger, such as electric arc.

The CE mark provides documentation that the product complies with performance standards set for a product of such nature.

It is not an assurance that the product will prevent risk of accidents or severe injuries when the user is exposed to such risks in a working environment.

Industry bodies release updated statement on 3G pitches

Following discussions between partners and key stakeholders, including the GMA, Sport England, sportscotland, Sport Wales, DCMS, Football Foundation, The FA, RFL, SAPCA and England Rugby, a joint statement has been produced relating to the use of rubber crumb in 3G pitches and the sustainability of artificial grass pitches.

The statement reads: “Artificial grass pitches (AGPs) are recognised as a durable, safe, year-round playing surfaces, able to withstand intensive use and all kinds of weather. The pitches are used for playing multiple sports including football, hockey and rugby and they are an important community resource that mean more people can benefit from the social and health benefits of physical activity.

“However, concerns have been raised about the environmental impact of these pitches. Most commonly this relates to the fibre

loss of microplastics and; in the case of third generation or 3G pitches, the presence of rubber infill, which is also a microplastic. We understand these concerns and are taking them very seriously.

“We are aware of potential developments in the EU following the European Commission’s statement (released in September 2022) which recommended the introduction of a ban on the future sale of ‘intentionally added microplastics’ onto the European market, which includes rubber infill for 3G AGPs. The Commission proposed a six-year transition period before the new restriction becomes effective, although the timing for it to become law has not yet been made clear. Following the UK’s exit from the EU, the regulatory framework for these matters now sits at a UK level (except for Northern Ireland, which will continue to follow EU REACH requirements).

“The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) commissioned an evidence project, under the UK REACH 2022/23 Work Programme, to review emissions of intentionally added microplastics. It will consider the risks they pose to human health and the environment and include a socio-economic assessment. The project will include rubber infill and will inform any future regulatory actions in the UK.

“The Sports Councils –Sport England, Sport Wales, sportscotland, Sport NI – and leading sport bodies are working together and with respective governments to understand what the EU ban will mean for the stock of 3G AGPs in the UK and the timings for any legislative decisions.

“If the EU law on a ban is passed, it will be important to have a transition period because 3G AGPs are in widespread use by

communities across Europe, were costly to put in place, and will be to remove. It is also important to note that there are currently no widely available alternative infill products on the market that are as effective, suitable for all weather conditions and deliver the required performance standards.

“That is why we are also committed to exploring alternative artificial

pitch systems and more sustainable infill products. We will continue to work with partners across the UK and Europe to research and reduce the spread of microplastics into the environment.

“More information will be published as discussions progress.”

ISEKI is hard to beat

at South Beds GC

Tom Hooper, Course Manager at South Beds Golf Club in Luton, claims that his new ISEKI tractor is one of the best he has seen throughout his long and illustrious career.

Tom has been working at the club since 1896 and was appointed Course Manager in 2003. Throughout his tenure he has overseen many course improvements and has seen many technological advancements in terms of equipment. A wide range of equipment has come and gone at South Beds, but there hasn’t been many that has lived up to one of his newest purchases.

“Having experienced using many different tractors throughout my career, I would say ISEKI is one of the best,” said Tom. “It performs so well and is very spacious inside with a good flat floor, no trip hazards and is extremely comfortable.

“We decided to invest in the ISEKI tractor to replace our old tractor, which was very outdated and too large for the golf course.

“It just ticked a lot of boxes for us, including the price, the performance and the lift capacity was ideal because it needs to be able to lift a 400-litre tank.”

Tom purchased the TG6407 IQ which features an ISEKI Stage V, 3 cylinder 40hp diesel engine with IQ Dual-Clutch transmission F24/R24 that offers the control of a manual with the convenience of an automatic. There are 8 clutchless speeds and 3 ranges. Gears are changed by simply moving the gear lever through the straight shift gate. If ‘D’ is selected, then gears 4-8 are operated automatically - ideal for roadwork or towing. TG6407 IQ is available with ROPS or an airconditioned Category 2 cab.

A front loader joystick, draft control, up stop PTO and linkage lift in reverse are all supplied as standard. The tractors are offered with either Ag or Turf tyres as standard. Optional loaders, either standard or with parallel lift are available.

“The IQ gearbox is very effi cient,” continued Tom. “It

is easy to operate, and you can go up and down the gears nice and smoothly.

“We use the tractor for all kinds of work including spraying, vertidraining, and lots of other tasks where we need to attach implements to it. It gives us plenty of horsepower but at the same time it is a nice and compact tractor which can go on all the greens in many different conditions.

“I would recommend it to any golf course or sports ground - its range of use is exceptional. All the staff are very happy with it.”

As well as being pleased with the tractor, Tom was quick to praise ISEKI dealer RT Machinerythe company who he purchased it through.

“We were introduced to RT Machinery a couple of months before we purchased the ISEKI tractor – they were very friendly, very helpful, and easy to get on with.”

gets the game on

Paul Loader, Site Co-ordinator for Worcestershire FA, believes that MM40 from Mansfield Sand has helped to prevent several games from being cancelled due to bad weather.

An ambitious site move recently signalled Worcestershire FA’s commitment to providing a space for football to develop in the county.

The new state of the art site, situated at Claines Lane, Worcester, now plays host to several local football teams

MM40 is a medium sand which is predominantly used in the construction and maintenance of a wide range of sports surfaces. This product was applied in May last year, and Paul has seen the benefits.

Honiton GC upgrades to Wiedemann Terra Spike GXi8 HD

Head greenkeeper, Stuart Broom, at Honiton Golf Club has welcomed a new Wiedenmann Terra Spike GXi8 HD as replacement for his 17-year-old Terra Spike XF.

Honiton’s long-serving XF deep aerator was one of the first ‘extra fast’ models sold in the UK and has done the East Devon club proud.

“It’s been fantastic on our greens for so long,” said Stuart Broom, “It’s done everything we asked, and we opted not to trade it in but let it continue on our walkways.”

The GXi8 HD was bought from local Wiedenmann UK dealer, Masons Kings at Newton Abbott, under the care of Lee Kirk, Turf Area Sales Consultant.

“Buying another Wiedenmann was an easy decision. We just upgraded; it’s a bit quicker, a bit wider and a bit smoother. It will do a brilliant job.

“The 20 cm difference means two extra legs, so more tine holders and a little more productivity.

“Ours is a parkland course, 850 feet above sea level, but very flat, which allows some stunning views. It’s clay-based; quite wet in the winter but the winds are our saviour, drying things up fast.”

Stuart, and his team of five, have an established effective aeration programme which helps keep the quality and consistency of their greens, tees and approaches.

Heathland course on top form with ISEKI

Working hard to restore this beautiful heathland course back to its former glory, Ipswich Golf Club with its 9-hole and 18-hole courses just keeps getting better every year.

The driving force behind all this is Graham Brumpton, Course Manager who has dedicated his last 33 years to developing the course, gradually introducing heathland elements back and managing the woodland areas to allow the natural habitats to thrive. With numerous industry awards for best environmental golf course and conservation greenkeeper, wildlife and environmental concerns are a high priority for the club.

With all these projects and constant renovation, Graham has a team of nine staff to carefully nurture the golf course, and with that workload they require numerous pieces of machinery.

Their previous ISEKI tractor was in need of replacement after over 25 years of hard graft. Another compact tractor with a higher

horse power was required, so following demonstrations with different manufacturers the ISEKI TH5370 ticked all the boxes.

Graham explained; “What sold it for us was the versatility of the tractor, with the 1,200kg lift capacity, loader and 35hp high torque engine. We use the machine for so many jobs on the course include aerating, brushing the fairways and topdressing.

“Another reason we particularly chose the TH5370 was for the width of the tractor itself, we needed a tractor to power the Pro-core and ensure there was no overlap, at 1.3m wide it was perfect for the job.

“Alongside powering the implements it is used for all greens work, towing the trailer to carry bunker sand and divot material around the course, then transporting the greens mowers to each hole. So versatility and operator friendly with very intuitive controls was important as the whole team use the tractor.”

Alan initially applied Attraxor at a rate of 375 g/ha before increasing it to 800 g/ha and hasn’t looked back.

In addition to supressing the Poa annua seed heads, Alan has reported some other positive findings.

Commenting on the Ventrac he said: “We are a destination resort and we pride ourselves with the visual appearance of the property and the immaculate presentation of the golf course. This Ventrac is probably the best innovation in course maintenance in the past 20 years. It will go almost anywhere

and its versatility is unparalleled. It’s great in wet areas and ticks all the boxes from a health and safety point of view.

“What other machine allows you to switch out a mowing deck and attach a stump grinder, then switch again to blowing leaves? The eight wheels gives it a low centre of gravity, which makes it very safe on slopes, especially around tee banks and bunker surrounds. It’s up there with the best machines I used.”

Trilo transforms cut and collect

Following BCP Council’s declaration of a climate and ecology emergency in 2019, the decision was made to review the management of some green spaces across the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole areas.

With a subsequent reduction in the cutting of some verges and open land, a Trilo S20 with its

large 20m 3 hopper capacity was brought in to increase productivity as the cut and collect operation expanded –taking not just large quantities of meadow grass in its stride but also assisting with leaf clearance during the winter months.

The versatile Trilo S20 was purchased in May 2022 by Simon Woodall, Team Operations Manager for BCP Council and spearhead of a 30-strong team responsible for looking after all aspects of parks and housing grounds maintenance and landscape construction. “Our ecology programme included creating more grass meadows by leaving areas uncut to improve carbon sequestration and increase our biodiversity to support pollinators. We also reduced cutting on other green spaces

such as verges to give plants a chance to fl ower, providing a valuable source of nectar and adding interest and colour to amenity areas” he explains.

“With this change to our cutting operation, we needed a machine that could handle large-scale cut and collect and found the Trilo was a perfect addition to our existing fleet of mountable cut and collect machines.”

The S20 is the largest capacity model in Trilo’s multi-purpose S-Line range which, when fi tted with a fl ail shaft, offers a cutting width of 2.1m and powerful vacuum collection of the clippings to leave a clean finish after every pass.

AS 1000 Ovis RC – simply steep mowing

At the beginning of March, ASMotor started series production of the new remote-controlled tracked flail mower AS 1000 Ovis RC.

True to the motto ‘Simply steep mowing’, the mower convinces with its slope-compatibility, high mowing performance and easy handling and maintenance.

The power of the Vanguard Professional 2-cylinder engine with 23hp maximum output is transmitted directly and with low loss of efficiency to the blade shaft via a belt drive.

The 4-stroke OHV engine with cyclone filter is equipped with a particularly strong crankshaft and has a displacement of 627cm3 at a speed of 3,600rpm. The AS 1000 Ovis RC enables a mowing speed of up to 5km/h and thus an area output of up to 5,000m2/h,

with an excellent cutting pattern and even grass placement across the entire working width.

The 100cm wide flail mower, in combination with the somewhat narrower tracked undercarriage, makes it easy to mow close to the edge and comfortably to within a few centimetres of crash barriers and other obstacles.

Thanks to the flexibly adjustable mowing deck, the new flail mower with tracked undercarriage can be optimally adapted to all terrain conditions. The AS 1000 Ovis RC with its compact design (183cm long, 114cm wide and 69cm high) mows difficult terrain and hard-to-reach areas without any problems thanks to remote control from a safe distance.

Major CS Pro Models for 20hp to 35hp compact tractors

The CS Pro is a multi-purpose mower for compact tractors in the 20hp to 35hp range.

The patented mulching blade system delivers an exceptional finish in everyday mowing and jobs requiring a superior after cut appearance. Heavy duty gearboxes power multiple rotors for reliable mowing in a variety of conditions. This blade system achieves consistent results in dense vegetation, heavy scrub, hedgerow undergrowth as well as estate lawns and sports turf.

A major advantage of the gearbox driveline is the low maintenance and ease of operation. With fewer wearing parts than a flail mower, owners can save significantly on maintenance costs and operating downtimes over the lifetime of the machine. Made of high performance Strenx™ 700 MC structural steel and galvanised, the CS Pro is a premium mower delivering a high return for the investment.

The MJ65-300 is a 3.0m wide machine with two wings folding

up to 2.0m transport width. Two rotors are fixed to the centre deck with one rotor on each wing. Four blades per rotor, for a total of 16 blades, deliver intense shredding in light and heavy material. High blade-tip speeds over 80m/s for the cleanest cut possible.

This combination ensures all material is finely cut and evenly dispersed leaving no windrows.

Full width rollers on each deck follows ground contours while producing a striped effect without scalping. Cutting height is easily set between 15 and 100mm.

The 3.0m CS Pro takes as little as 30hp to power, making ideal for use with a subcompact or smaller utility tractor. The CS Pro is available in 1.50m, 2.10m and 3.0m widths.

Here at the Garden of Cosmic Speculation with it’s vast landscapes, sculptures and gardens we are never short of jobs to do. We already have a SXG mower for cutting the lawns and one TXG tractor, so to help with the workload we purchased another TXGS24 23hp subcompact tractor.

“With the front loader and bucket fitted it’s largely used for excavating and landscaping purposes. It’s also used for towing trailers, transporting grass cuttings and leaves for easy disposal. With the two tractors we can run the PTO’s and systems off one trailer and can unload into a trailer attached to the other tractor. If we can attach something to them, then we can use it.

“ISEKI offer exactly what we need, they are reliable, comfortable and safe to use. I would recommend these machines to absolutely anyone.”

Eight in one with the new Fortis mower

Remote control solutions from PSD Groundscare

There is an increasing demand for reliable remote control mowers for the commercial user where certain tasks such as steep verges and slopes make it very difficult to mow quickly and safely and a remote control mower is often the answer.

Commercial remote control mowers have been designed and developed to reduce and in some circumstances remove health and safety

issues working on slopes, near water courses, in environments were operators can be at risk, including from thorny foliage, animals, reptiles and insects.

The operator is able to work the machine at a distance which can be safer and more convenient for them.

Another advantage is that complications regarding Hand and Arm Vibrations and hearing are less of an issue.

• 3m working width. 2m transport width

• Heavy duty gearboxes ensure consistent mowing rates even in the toughest conditions

• High blade-tip speeds finely cuts and evenly disperses clippings

• Front and rear rollers allow the mower to follow ground contours while producing a striped effect

• Adjustable cutting height from 15 - 100mm

PSD Groundscare offer specific machines for specific tasks. The Koppl Taurus is a versatile walk behind power unit that can quickly be converted into a remote control mower that is a robust solution suitable for dealing with hard-to-reach areas for the operator.

For extra grip a tracked remote control mower such as the Stella URS 100 is perfect for customers that require stability on steep slopes up to 55 degrees

such as motorway embankment services and forestry/woodland applications as well as in difficult to reach places.

Also available is the Koppl Crawler, a powerful multiattachment implement carrier with a wide range of suitable attachments available, resulting in the Crawler being an efficient solution to almost any groundscare requirement.

The new Fortis range of cylinder lawnmowers from Cobra delivers advanced lawn mower technology to bring a convenient lawncare solution with incredible cutting precision.

The range combines eight machines in one to give the ultimate package for creating picture perfect lawns, and are the first powered cylinder mowers to be launched by Cobra.

There are four mowers in the Fortis range. Starting with a compact 14” model that is powered by a Loncin petrol engine, and then the 17”, 20” and 25” all featuring Briggs & Stratton engines for extra power for larger lawns. They are all self-propelled and have a threeway drive facility, allowing the blades to be disengaged without having to stop the engine.

Fortis mowers all feature a sixblade precision ground cutting

cylinder to give the finest, most precise cut possible. The height of cut can easily be adjusted too with variants as low as 6mm and ranging up to 30mm. The finishing touch to the perfect cut comes from the steel front roller giving an enhanced definition to the iconic lawn stripes.

Convenience and comfort have also been considered as the mowers have foam cushioned handles that fold down for easytransportation and compact storage.

What makes the Fortis machines the ultimate in lawncare however, is their ability to transform into seven other machines to ensure that lawns are immaculate and healthy. The Fortis six-bladed cassette can simply be removed and replaced with another accessory cassette in the range to switch its use.

More mowing power with Makita

Makita has expanded its 40VMax XGT range with two new selfpropelled XGT lawnmowers.

These much-anticipated products are Makita’s first lawnmowers to join the company’s powerful outdoor XGT collection, with both brushless motor products providing professional landscapers with the flexibility to cover large and dense areas without cords or petrol.

The LM001G and LM002G 40VMax XGT Brushless lawnmowers are powered by Makita’s trusted 40VMax XGT Li-Ion battery technology and have been engineered to provide excellent performance and power, even when mowing in dense grass, with quick acceleration and optimised blade design. Both models benefit from the option to work with two batteries in parallel, so that

when one battery runs out, the system automatically switches to the other. This means that users can continue working without having to stop and replace and recharge batteries when working on large areas.

With a 62L collection box, the LM001G has a 480mm cutting width and offers a no-load speed of up to 3,200rpm. The machine can also be operated in a quieter ‘Noise Reduction’ mode with a no-load speed of 2,500rpm, which is ideal for working in residential and public spaces. The LM002G, with 70L grass box, affords users with a 534mm cutting width with a no-load speed of 2,800rpm, or 2,300rpm in the ‘Noise Reduction’ mode.

Each feature 10 height positions from 20mm at the lowest setting and 100mm at the highest, and both can be operated with a

choice of three cutting modes: Normal, Soft No-Load, or Noise Reduction. Other key features include the electric brake, soft start, anti-restart function and constant speed control to ensure ultimate safety whilst delivering excellent results.

The new, durable products are designed for rough terrain with large wheels and high-end steel decks that minimise damage from obstacles and flying debris, as well as IXP4 weather resistant construction. The mowers include a mulching function and a grass level indicator, so operators know when the bag needs emptying. Furthermore, the machines can be easily stored at the end of the day in a compact, vertical position, thanks to the foldable handle design.

Wet or dry grass, long or short, collect or mulch, the PH 1250 and PH 1500 models take it all in their stride. And it’s that flexibility that sets the Profihopper apart from the crowd. The sharpened wing blades on the horizontal SmartCut rotor cleanly cut and shred the grass before conveying it via the cross auger on to that unique second vertical auger to be packed into the collection hopper - meaning less time emptying and more time mowing. To add to that versatility, the sward is rolled after cutting and scarifying comes as standard.

The more than adequate power is provided by engines that are already Stage V Exhaust emission compliant and require no AdBlue.

Don’t compromise - choose the machine that comes with more compaction built-in for maximum work rates and less emptying.

Club invests in Jacobsen Eclipse 360 Hybrid 3WD

New recipients of a Jacobsen Eclipse 360 Hybrid 3WD greens mower are greenkeepers at Bathgate Golf Club.

The West Lothian club is famous for its close links to the Ryder Cup, having produced Ryder Cup captains, Eric Brown and Bernard Gallacher, and a third Ryder Cup player in Stephen Gallacher.

Head greenkeeper, Rab Burns, took delivery of the hydraulicfree ride on mower from Robert Marshall, Area Sales Manager at Scottish dealers, Fairways GM at Inchinnan.

Rab, who has been at the James Braid-designed course since 1995, said that the new arrival would bring extra precision and quality to the tees and greens.

“This is our third successive Eclipse. The others were owned for 5 years and 7 years, so this new one takes us into our 13th year.

“It’s brilliant, just the best cut around and not something we would compromise. We’ve had it out already and it’s fantastic and what we expected.”

When specifying the latest Eclipse, the three-wheel drive

option was vital to help the Bathgate team reach two greens that have machinery access only via a steep incline.

“With two-wheel drive, particularly in the damp or wintertime, it would be tough to get up that slope. In all it runs to about 130 metres, this just makes it effortless.”

Rab, who heads a team of four, moves to a new post at Kingsfield Golf Centre, Linlithgow next month.

Two models in the Dennis E-Series battery-powered range are setting the standard in Italy by maintaining the pitch at the world-famous San Siro stadium.

Giovanni Castelli oversees a team of six groundstaff and is responsible for every pitch operation.

Under his remit, Giovanni also decides on which machinery should be used at the San Siro, and he explained his reasons for choosing the Dennis ES-860 and ES-34R.

The commitment from the San Siro team highlights the significant international success the company is enjoying with the new range and the models continue to evolve. At BTME earlier this year, Dennis also unveiled two new models.

Quiet in operation with ultra-low hand arm vibration, the ES-22 Ultra can help professionals enhance a playing surface.

Very simple to control, variable speeds and clip rates, forward speeds controlled by the operator and easy pull back for accurate alignment of next run.

Using a 7 or 11 bladed cutting cylinder and groomer reel, this 560mm (22”) battery mower provides an ultra-fine finish on golf greens and tees. The tungsten tipped groomer can be in or out dependent on conditions.

The new ES-510 mower is based on the Dennis FT510 – which is, historically, the company’s most popular machine. With a choice of 12 interchangeable cassettes, the ES-510 is capable of scarifying down to -10mm. Ideal for fine

turf it has the power to cut 4-5 bowling greens or approximately 10km on a single charge.

The E-Series features a robust LCD keypad screen which provides the operator with a multitude of information options including speed, clip rate, service checks, lifetime running reports and battery information.

The mowers take just 2-3 hours for an ultra-fast full battery recharge, feature adjustable handlebars, are extremely easy to maintain, the battery pack is removable, maintaining the harpness of the cutting cylinder blades is a simple process and they have very low lifetime costs and significant cost savings on fuel.

STIHL cordless range continues to set new standards

STIHL range of cordless brushcutters includes the RGA 140, the first tool in the STIHL AP System dedicated for use with the STIHL RG cutting head, enabling maintenance workers, landscapers and groundskeepers to cut weeds and grass with ease in sensitive areas.

Taking inspiration from the popular FSA 135 brushcutter and RG gearbox, the new RGA 140 features oscillating disc blades with low rotational energy, enabling low-spin mowing on hard surfaces and around fragile obstacles such as cars or greenhouses. Not only does this reduce the risk of flicking stones but, due to its low spin

mowing and tailored RPM, the new brushcutter also reduces the safety distances to 3m from objects and 5m from people, making the tool ideal for use in built-up areas.

The RGA 140 also boasts a 230mm cutting diameter and ergonomic controls. Featuring a quiet EC motor with three-speed settings and a clear LED display, users can continuously regulate the speed in order to work as efficiently as possible.

In addition, the new brushcutter utilises a bike handle for well-balanced operation, offering comfortable use for professionals, particularly over

Brushcutting made easy at Castle Stuart

James Hutchison is the Head Greenkeeper at Castle Stuart Golf Links, who purchased a Ventrac package that included the 25 hp all-terrain compact tractor unit in its 8-wheel configuration, a Contour deck, a Tough Cut deck and Power Rake.

Commenting specifically on the Tough Cut deck he said, “The Ventrac and Tough Cut deck is an excellent and versatile addition to our machinery fleet. Initially we’ve purchased three attachments, but I’m sure that over time we’ll be adding to this.

“The Tough Cut deck certainly lives up to its name. We’re using it extensively to take out the broom and gorse that has

thrived here over the years. Its rapid growth tends to hide the undulations surrounding the fairways and can obscure the magnificent views over the Moray Firth, which is one of our strong selling points for visiting golfers.

“Some areas of the course are receiving their first cut in three years and it makes short work of a job that was previously done by a team with brushcutters. The combination of the 8-wheel tractor unit and Tough Cut deck feels really safe, especially when I’ve been using it on 30-degree slopes. Specifically designed for mowing high grass, thick weeds and heavy brush, the Tough Cut deck attachment from Ventrac is

ideal for extreme brushcutting on slopes of up to 30 degrees. It will save huge amounts of hours compared to manual brushcutting.”

On the Tough Cut deck a large front opening directs material into the deck where three heavyduty blades counter rotate to cut and deposit waste evenly without windrowing. The blades are sharp on both sides so they can be used on right or left-hand spindles, allowing for extended blade life.

Capable of tackling saplings up to 2.54 mm (1 inch) in diameter, the Tough Cut makes short work out of overgrown thickets. It has three cutting heights: 76 mm, 92

mm and 108 mm. Easy servicing of belts and pulleys is provided by the hinged and removable cover, while the flip-up deck provides easy access for cleaning and changing blades.

Ventrac’s ability to mow difficult areas including slopes, wet areas and retention ponds, ensures that the Tough Cut deck is ideal for landscaping applications and makes previously impossible turf management situations, possible. With out-front mounted couplings unique to Ventrac, the Tough Cut deck and all attachment can we changed in a matter of minutes.

With one eye on preserving the past and the other on ensuring the site remains fit for the future, Crathes Castle – part of the National Trust for Scotland collection – have invested in a battery-powered cylinder mower from INFINICUT.

Utilising funding from the National Trust, the venue took delivery of a 22” INFINICUT FX last September for the sustainable management of gardens and lawned areas – in a way that brings benefit to the venue and visitors alike.

“We looked at the options available and first of all were amazed at how far the technology has come in the few years since we first looked at electric mowers,” explained James Hannaford, Head Gardener. “What stood out for us with the

INFINICUT was the ease of use, the versatility and the quality of cut.”

James and the team purchased the FX22 with two SMARTCut cassettes – the 7-blade cylinder for lawned areas and 11blade option for a finer cut on the sites croquet lawn. “The finish is excellent and noise has been almost completely eliminated, which is better for our environment and the thousands of visitors we get through the gardens every year. Visitor enjoyment is critical to the success of our venues.”

James says that the utilisation of the INFINICUT has peaked public interest in the more sustainable solutions to turf management. “

The Etesia Bahia M2EL is powered by a 51.2V, 100Ah lithium battery which enables users to get up to 3hrs 30 mins of action before it needs recharging.

The new lithium option is also 85kgs lighter compared to the older lead acid battery version.

A pocket-size ride-on mower, just 0.82 m wide and 1.98 m long, the Etesia M2EL features an incredibly tight turning circle. It nips into every nook and cranny and can be easily transported.

With its low centre of gravity, the Etesia M2EL 33/67 weight distribution on the front/rear axles make it a highly stable mower that masterfully copes with slopes.

Furthermore, its 240-litre collection box is fed by a wide discharge chute ensuring very good filling of the material.

It is also highly economical – the running costs are £0.35 against £3.57 for the petrol version and there are the obvious reduced maintenance costs – such as no engine belt, no filters, and no engine oil.

Yamaha electric UTVs at Bishop’s Stortford College

Yamaha’s UMX AC light utility vehicles have proved a hit with Adam Smith, the Head of Grounds and Gardens at Bishop’s Stortford College in Hertfordshire.

He and his team now have three of these electricpowered workhorses for estate management duties, while the Catering team have two, which are used for delivering food and beverages to the various houses and to outlying areas of the campus.

The Maintenance team are about to take delivery of their own unit with an enclosed carry box for transporting tools,

cables and other necessary equipment.

“Prior to getting the UMX’s we were using golf buggies adapted with a cargo box and tow bar,” he said, “but they weren’t really fit for purpose; their traction under load was poor and they had limited carrying capacity.

“We demoed most of the competitor machines and Yamaha came out on top.

“They were not the cheapest option, but they were far and away the best, with a good towing capacity, excellent storage in the side boxes and

bonnet, sturdily built and with a very comfortable ride.

“We have three UMX’s for the Grounds and Gardens team and they are excellent workhorses. The carrying capacity is just over 360kg and the aluminium cargo bed is a generous size with a onetouch tailgate latch.

“We also use them as the tow vehicles for our ground-driven sweeper on our two Astroturf pitches.”

STIHL has launched upgraded versions of its popular AP System MSA 160 C-B, MSA 200 C-B, and MSA 220 C-B cordless chainsaws, offering professional users a new streamlined design, improved battery performance, faster cutting and enhanced operational features.

The new MSA 160 C-B is more powerful than the previous version, boasting a larger motor and compatibility with the recommended AP 300 S AP System battery, which ensures an increased electrical output of 1.5 kW for faster cutting performance.

Moreover, the enhanced MSA 220 now comes as standard with a 3/8P pitch, 1.1mm gauge PS3 PRO chain, which improves cutting performance by up to 20% due to its narrower kerf.

The new chain has been specifically designed for use with STIHL’s new Light 04 1.1mm guide bar, allowing more cuts to be made per battery charge.

The MSA 160 C-B and MSA 200 C-B feature a 1/4P chain for smooth and precise cuts.

All three new models have seen numerous upgraded operational features introduced to improve the user experience.

These include improved visibility of the chain oil level for faster checks, a thumb lever and OPC starting switch for increased comfort and safety, as well as a soft rubberised grip and optimally balanced handle position for maximum control and comfort.

In addition, all new models feature quick chain tensioning for fast and tool-less replacement or tensioning of the chain, as well as bayonet style oil tank caps which can be opened quickly and easily while wearing gloves.

All the new saws are compatible with the STIHL Smart Connectors, part of the STIHL Connected fleet management system. Smart Connectors record and transmit the working time of the tool to the user’s smartphone, giving prompts to complete important maintenance tasks exactly when they’re required.

HiSun – make the smart move, and switch to electric

The innovative range of HiSun lithium-ion-powered electric utility vehicles is designed to work just as hard, if not harder, than traditional fuel-powered machines. There are four models, 5 kW, 7.5 kW, 15 kW and a 4-seater 15 kW. The versatility of these machines makes them ideal for applications in estate management, sports and leisure, events and utility.

The move to electric UTVs offers many benefits over petrolpowered machines. There is no compromise on power, with these latest lithium-ion UTVs providing all the power needed for use in challenging off-road conditions. They are free from harmful carbon emissions, which supports the shift to a virtually zero-carbon economy in the drive to tackle climate change and reduce global warming.

Choosing electric power offers huge savings in fuel costs, with an overnight charge costing around £1. There is also the bonus of no road tax, as electric UTVs can be used both on and off-road. Electric UTVs are

usually cheaper to service and maintain with no engine and fewer parts to service.

The quiet electric motor is a key attribute making these machines ideal for driving near animals or in areas where noise must be minimal. An electric UTV has no gearbox, so acceleration is smoother, making for a more comfortable ride.

HiSun UTVs are true multifunctional vehicles. Featuring a winch, tow hitch and cargo bed, they have the versatility to recover and carry equipment and tow-powered machinery. All models have the option of the DFK fully enclosed cab kit that includes a glass windscreen with wash/wipe, rear screen, metal roof, and lockable doors so that the UTVs can be customised depending on the customer’s requirements.

HiSun vehicles are supported and distributed in the UK by EP Barrus Ltd.

Safeguard surfaces from drought with 4turf from DLF

With drought-like conditions becoming more common, turf managers can begin futureproofing their surfaces now with deep-rooting, drought-tolerant grasses such as 4turf tetraploid perennial ryegrass from DLF.

Research conducted at DLF’s

RadiMax root-screening facility has shown 4turf to deliver deeper rooting and a better visual appearance when starved of water, compared to the performance of traditional diploid perennial ryegrasses.

In the trials, plants were assessed based on the root profile and above-ground tolerance. Roots were compared on their depth and how much colour the plant retained when starved of moisture. The results showed that 4turf varieties had quicker root growth and a higher root mass in deeper soil layers, outperforming the diploids under the same trial conditions. Incorporation of the

highest performing varieties into a spring overseeding mix aids in the establishment of a deeper rooting sward, better equipped to cope with spring drought – where some moisture remains in the deeper profile – and summer drought –where water is used up throughout the profile.

During prolonged periods of severe drought, the risk of restrictions or bans on drinking water being used to irrigate amenity grass becomes a real threat. That is the reason why many turf managers are looking to alternative water sources like

reclaimed or recycled brown water but, in these situations, salt tolerance then becomes a major consideration. Foreseeing the issue, DLF also conducted screening of turf cultivars for salt tolerance where, again, 4turf tetraploid perennial ryegrass came out on top.

Choosing 4turf also means you are assured of the highest disease resistance and quickest establishment – helping to keep weed ingress at bay.
