A LOOK INTO THE LIFE OF NEWLYWEDS SCOTTY & GABI MCCREERY NORTH CAROLINA’S FIRST COUNTRY COUPLE

• Written By Heather Green • Photo Credit: Krista Stevens & Amber Beasley / Six Foot Photography 14 | triangle style

Imagine falling in love… in kindergarten, and that special someone just so happens to be an award-winning, chart-topping country star. For Gabi McCreery, this dream came true. So, what’s it like to be married to a superstar? Exactly what you would expect and then some! We caught up (literally) with Gabi who was on the road with Scotty, to find out more about the McCreery's favorite NC hotspots, who has the best style, and what they named their new puppy!

A Reflection of Uniquely You

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND HOW YOU MET SCOTTY.

I’m a pediatric nurse at Duke University Hospital. I went to nursing school at UNC, but through all of this have remained an NC State f an - so I’m covering all my bases around the Triangle area! I was born in Houston, Texas, but have lots of Louisiana roots with both parents being f rom there. However, I grew up in Garner. Scotty and I met in kindergarten and went to school together all the way through high school, so we've known each other almost our whole lives. WHEN YOU FIRST HEARD THE SONG, “THIS IS IT”, WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND?

Thefirst time I heard "ThisIs It" was the day we got engaged, literally right after Scotty proposed! We had just gotten back to the condo in the mountains after our hike and our families had surprised me by being there. Right before we left for lunch, he sat us down and we all listened to it. I was amazed at how it painted the picture of the moment so well of what had just happened, so I was already feeling nostalgic! I would say lots of excitement and love was felt while first hearing it. BEING A NORTH CAROLINIAN, WHERE ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE “HOTSPOTS”?

I love to eat, so this is an easy one for me! Poole's Diner is one of my f avorites - their mac and cheese is to die for! A common date night for us is going to Cameron Bar and Grill (we love their pimento cheese dip and burgers) and to end the night by walking over to Goodberry's for a mint

chocolate chip Concrete. For a fancy date night, we love to go to Angus Barn. I’m obsessed with their cheese and crackers as well as their chocolate chess pie. Really, everything there is great. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE VACATION DESTINATIONS IN NC? ARE YOU A MOUNTAIN OR A BEACH GIRL?

My favorite vacation destinations in NC are Topsail Island, Banner Elk/Boone, and Lake Gaston. It’s hard for me to decide which “kind of girl” I would be because I love all three spots so much, but the f act that we can choose between the mountains, lake, or beach without too far to travel is why I love North Carolina! HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR AND SCOTTY’S INDIVIDUAL STYLES? WHO IS MORE OF THE STYLE “EXPERT” IN THE FAMILY?

Both Scotty's style and my style would probably be best described as very casual. We both like to feel comfortable. As a nurse, I love being able to wear scrubs to work! However, I feel like we still know how to dress up and look nice. I would definitely say I’m more of the style "expert" of the family in those instances though. Marriage has been awesome! I think the biggest change has been living together and getting settled in our new house. Bef ore marriage, seeing each other took more effort and planning. Time together was more limited with Scotty traveling and our different work schedules. I feel like we now get to see each other more and we’re really enjoying that!

YOU GUYS JUST ADOPTED A DOG (MOOSE! LOVE THAT NAME!) WHAT TYPE OF DOG IS HE AND HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME?

Yes! We love him so much!! Moose is a yellow lab. I grew up with a yellow lab and couldn't see myself with any other dog. I stumbled across an Instagram account of a brown lab named Moose a few years ago and loved that name so much that it stuck with me ever since then. I have had his name picked out before he was even born, but I think it fits him so well! YOU GUYS WERE ON FAMILY FEUD! WAS IT WHAT YOU EXPECTED? IT SEEMS LIKE IT WOULD BE REALLY DIFFICULT HAVING TO ANSWER QUESTIONS QUICKLY WITH MILLIONS WATCHING!

Family Feud was everything I expected and more. I got more than enough laughs in that day! Steve Harvey was so f unny and Scotty's Grandma, Paquita, really stole the show. We were all pretty nervous out there, but I’m a pretty competitive person. When it came to answering the questions, I think I went into game mode and really focused and tried to block out the fact that people were watching.

BEING ON THE ROAD SO MUCH WITH SCOTTY,YOU MUST BE A PRO PACKER! ANY PACKING ADVICE? WHAT ARE SOME ESSENTIALS YOU TAKE WITH YOU “MUST HAVES” FROM HOME?

I wish I could say I was a pro packer! Sadly, I still pack way more than I need for a weekend trip, but my motto is “The more options, the better!” Ha! My advice that I hope to follow one day is to plan outfits in advance to keep the packing light. My only home essential is my Pooh Bear - yes, I still have a stuffed bear that I sleep with!

WHEN IT COMES TO DECORATING YOUR NEW HOME, HOW HAVE YOU GUYS DECIDED WHAT FITS YOUR UNIQUE STYLES? WHO HAS THE KNACK FOR DECORATING IN THE FAMILY?

I think we both have a traditional style for the house with both a modern and rustic flare. We like the lighter color schemes - light walls and f urniture with colors coming f rom our accent pillows and wall decor. I have more of a knack for decorating. I come from a very DIY family, so I love doing projects, but Scotty likes to throw in his opinions and he’s very good at hanging pictures and things on walls! I READ THAT WHEN YOU WERE IN KINDERGARTEN,YOU WROTE AND CIRCLED MRS. MCCREERY AND DREW HEARTS AROUND IT! WHEN DID YOU KNOW THAT SCOTTY WAS “THE ONE”?

My mom f ound the diary I drew this in and has never let me live it down! But really, I had a big crush on him in kindergarten and I like to say that I was way more decisive as a five-year-old than I am now. I picked my best friend and husband out all at that age! I would really say I knew he was the one after the first few months of dating. Our relationship started during our senior year of high school after he got back f rom American Idol and it was what I like to call a "God thing". Scotty pursued me and we’ve fit so well together since! WHAT’S COMING UP FOR THE MCCREERY FAMILY THIS YEAR? ANY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS THAT YOU CAN SHARE?

This year, we’re learning how to take care of and train a puppy! Also, I just started a new job as a nurse on a pediatric bone marrow transplant unit in January, so I’ll be getting more situated in that job. Meanwhile, Scotty is continuing to make music and go on the road. He’s headlining his own shows and performing at other events including Stagecoach for the first time this year! We both have a New Year’s Resolution to practice and re-learn how to play the piano as well as to get some exercise routines going. I’m also hoping to complete my first half marathon this year. I have a personal resolution to learn how to curl my hair, which is something I’ve struggled to master. Scotty's resolution is to work on being a better texter! MOTHER DAUGHTER

makeover

Daughters typically learn about style from their mothers, but as these mothers age and their bodies change, they often lose touch with what’s on trend. And who do these moms turn to most often for style advice? Their daughters. But life often gets in the way, leaving the daughters feeling frumpy and out of style themselves. When mothers and daughters can have a personal style experience together to boost not only their appearance but also their confidence, it can be a powerful experience. Meet Susan and Johanna Ely. When this mother/daughter duo found themselves feeling frumpy and grumpy at the same time, albeit at very different phases of their lives, it was time to do something about it. What they needed was a Mother/Daughter Makeover.

Susan is a lovely, mid-60s, motivational blogger and

Written by and Styled By: Mary Michele Nidiffer Founder, StyleFinder Boutique StyleFinderBoutique.com Photography Elizabeth Galeke 20 | triangle style

Susan is a lovely, mid-60s, motivational blogger and speaker who has three children and seven grandchildren. Several years ago, her husband had a pulmonary embolism, and caring for him has left little time or money to devote to herself towards looking good. She found herself feeling overweight, out of touch, and in need of a confidence boost. Susan’s daughter, Johanna, designs some of the most gorgeous jewelry around! As a single mom, she juggles running her home-based business (Good Girls Studio) with parenting her 17-year-old son and 18-month-old daughter. With a self-described “mom bod”, and an increased bustline thanks to nursing, Johanna was feeling tired, frustrated, and frumpy.

Susan is a True Summer who should wear muted tones, taupe, and shades of gray, while Johanna is a Contrasting Winter who looks best in bold jewel tones, charcoal, and black. Next, we discussed body type. This is where so many women get tripped up and make the most mistakes. When we dress for the body we have, we can rock our style like a boss! For instance, Susan is curvy with an Hourglass figure. She looks best in clothing that shows off her shape and accentuates her waist. She prefers attire that’s not very fitted, but that gently skims her body. Johanna is an Apple who’s challenged by her bustline. I showed her how to use color to downplay her upper body and how to layer to create a long, lean silhouette.

Susan and Johanna arrived at StyleFinder feeling excited and a little nervous. Both struggle to dress in an age-appropriate, yet flattering way. Though Susan and Johanna are similar in size and share clothes quite often (lucky them!), they were ready to step outside their comfort zone and try some new things. But first, we needed to determine what was right for each of them as individuals. I was excited to guide them through our StyleFinder 101 System, starting with a personal color analysis. We quickly discovered each of their seasonal color harmonies –

spring | 21

After that, we went over their personal style. Susan’s StyleFinder ID® is Natural/Sporty, Whimsical, and her Archetype is “The Easy Going”. This means that what’s most important to her is wearing clothing that’s casual, feels good on the body, and features an element of surprise. Johanna’s style was similar to her mother’s: Whimsical/Sporty, Romantic, and her Archetype is “The Clever”. Johanna enjoys wearing something unexpected. Comfort is also key, but her look needs to have an undeniable femininity that makes her feel like herself. I told each woman to go ahead and continue to share clothing, but to be sure to put their own spin on their unique looks. Upon trying on one of her “new” outfits and having her makeup done by Ann Teicher of Trish McEvoy, Susan lit up for the camera! Photographer, Elizabeth Galecke, was able to capture her true essence. It was obvious that Susan embraced her new look and was loving it! Johanna was excited to wear color, as she’s been wearing mostly black and feeling blah as a result. She has a hard time finding blouses that fit, but we found several great tops and a wonderful long vest that elongated her body and make her look fabulous.

22 | triangle style

We rounded off the look with a pair of skinny cropped pants and achieved a simple, puttogether ensemble that was also comfortable and chic. Her own jewelry accented her outfit beautifully. Johanna was especially excited about her makeup when Ann helped her to look “awake” after she’d endured a period of low-quality sleep. As part of our charitable organization, IAB (I Am Beautiful) Foundation, we gifted Susan and Johanna each with $100 to use towards clothing. It was our pleasure to work with these amazing ladies! They each left with a smile on their face, and both sent me a message telling me how amazing and beautiful they felt. Just another day in the life of a Style Coach! As a little girl, Katie watched Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals with her mother, and it was Irene Malloy’s hat shop in Hello Dolly that first sparked Katie’s interest in headwear. Later, she earned a degree in Costume Design and Technology and worked in theatre and independent film after graduation. During this time, Katie gained the skills and know-how that made her the go-to designer for those seeking private commissions. Since then, she’s honed her techniques with some of the best-known milliners from places like England and Australia. Katie designs both vintage-inspired as well as contemporary headwear and often incorporates antique materials as she sees fit. She enjoys accenting her hats with flowers cut from pure silk textiles that are hand-dyed and shaped using special heated tools. Her best-selling styles are a color-block straw fedora named “Marie”, as well as a classic asymmetrical wide brim hat called “Emeline”. Most of Katie’s hats can be customized to a degree and approximately half of what she designs and constructs are bespoke.

Hi Anna, I have been getting straight up Botox for years now and nothing else. Recently a girlfriend of mine says she has been getting laser resurfacing treatments and feels she gets better results. Would you recommend switching to a laser treatment to break up my routine or would you suggest a combination of the both? — Melissa

Melissa, Botox alone is great—there’s no denying that—but if you’re looking to take your skin to the next level, a laser treatment could be a great place to start! At Synergy, we find that the best results come from a comprehensive plan of care that can include everything from aesthetic treatments like f acials and microneedling to more advanced procedures like injectables and laser treatments. We like to approach concerns from a variety of angles with a wide assortment of modalities, so that you receive the best plan of care for your specific concerns. For someone who has been getting Botox regularly, I would still keep that up, but I would def initely ask your provider about laser options if you’re open to it.

For texture concerns, Synergy’s Clear & Bright is a great non-ablative treatment; for pigment issues, you can’t go wrong with Sciton’s BBL treatment. The best part is that the downtime with both of these options is very manageable! The only caveat is that we advise waiting two to f our weeks between your laser and injectables treatment. To make sure you’re a candidate, I’d suggest scheduling an in-person VISIA consultation with one of our experienced aestheticians who will get you looking and feeling your best in no time! Anna Churchill is the founder of Synergy Spa & Aesthetics with two locations in Raleigh. She also teaches corrective makeup and innovative skin care to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, aestheticians, and spa owners worldwide. Email your questions to askanna@trianglestyle.com

READER REDO | ROBLEDO STUDIO

“Rodney really has a talent for hair and makeup! He readily knew what would look best on me. It was an amazing experience!”

IN HONOR OF MOTHER’S DAY, TRIANGLE STYLE MAGAZINE AND ROBLEDO STUDIO TEAMED UP TO HOST A PAMPERING MAKEOVER SESSION FOR ONE (OF MANY) VERY DESERVING LOCAL MOMS, CANDY PINKUS.

MCKAYLA, CANDY’S DAUGHTER, NOMINATED CANDY FOR THIS EXTRA SPECIAL MOTHER’S DAY GIVEAWAY. “When reading the description of the kind of mother Triangle Style Magazine was

looking to treat, I knew my mom would enjoy this opportunity and, even more, that she most certainly deserved it! My mom has always been driven and has never let anything stop her from reaching her goals. She has always seen more in me than I could see in myself and that drive has stuck with me and I believe that it will benefit me for the rest of my life!”

36 | triangle style

Written by Kimberly Arnold, Photography By Terrence Jones

THE PROBLEM...According to Candy, her biggest beauty concerns are nailing the right look for her mature skin, as well as maintaining the blonde in her hair. She says, “I’m not skilled in shadowing or highlighting and working miracles, so I welcome any tricks!” Prior to the makeover, Candy kept it simple and straightforward in her makeup routine, citing BB creams, blush and finishing powder as her go-to staples. She jokingly says, “I want to look like Racquel Welch, but that’s impossible so let’s go with the best that I can! I’m planning on winning the lottery one day, so I’ll need to look good for TV!”

Whether you're looking for a timeless, classic style or looking to make a bold statement, we've got you covered!

TO THE RESCUE...Rodney Robledo, owner and

Master Stylist of North Raleigh-based Robledo Studio, is one of the Triangle’s premiere destinations for virtually all of your beauty needs. With one-on-one pampering at the forefront of its offerings, Robledo Studio’s intimate setting offers spa-like relaxation, thanks to the essential oil aromatherapy that fills the studio, and Rodney’s gentle touch. The Robledo Studio offers a wide variety of services, including hair coloring, styling, cutting, extensions, as well as makeup applications for any occasion.

PROBLEM SOLVED...Because Candy has very thick and coarse hair concentrated on the back and sides, Rodney opted to give her a textured pixie cut, keeping the front longer to frame her face. He says, “This haircut is perfect for her head shape and it greatly accentuates her amazing cheekbones. It’s fun, modern and sophisticated –– perfect and easy for an every day look!” To preserve her blonde, Rodney softened the base color and added a bit of dimension and depth using the balayage technique, followed by an intensely nourishing Olaplex treatment to strengthen and repair her hair from damage. MAKE UP...Never one to cover beauty — only enhance it — Rodney opted to keep her makeup clean and simple. To give the skin a beautiful complexion, he says, “I used a light foundation only on her ‘T’ zone to cancel any redness out and accentuate her gorgeous skin. I added a light pop of color to her cheeks and lips to give her a radiant and youthful glow.” READER REVIEW... “The studio is relaxing and beautifully decorated. Rodney is a stylish guy and I am LOVING my results. I will be setting my next appointment with him. Thanks, also, to my sweet daughter for submitting my name for this –– I believe she would like to see Rodney, too!”

Bash Boutique of Raleigh carries an extensive collection of designer women's clothing and accessories. You'll find a wide variety of dresses, tops, bottoms, and handbags.

ROAD TESTED | SLEEP AIDS

OLLY Restful Sleep I already use OLLY’s The Women’s Perfect Multi (Vitamin) and let me tell you, they work!!!! I have a very sensitive stomach and these gummies have never triggered my nausea nerve. So, being a fan of OLLY to begin with, I felt confident that their sleep-aid would prove equally as effective – and I was not disappointed.

The Sleep Solution

If you are one of those clock-watchers that gets that panicky feeling around 2 am because you simply cannot sleep – this is the sleep-aid for you! I really like the safe ingredients (OLLY is known for) and there are no “groggy” morning side effects. — Available at Target for $13.99

You know what they say, “The early bird gets the worm” and “Early to bed, early to rise makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise”. Sleep is probably one of the most underrated necessities that people, mothers in particular, are able to achieve properly and regularly. Enter, the sleep aid. I’ve always been a little leery of how it will make me feel – Are they safe AND effective? Will I be groggy? Will I be able to get up the next morning? Will I have to use it forever? So, to answer these questions and end those sleepless nightmares, I researched the top-of-the-line and most popular sleep-aids on the market. Some results were surprising and others, like a dream come true! — Heather Green

38 | triangle style

Driftoff

Driftoff had so many great reviews that I couldn’t help but jump on the sheep counting bandwagon. Containing Melatonin AND Valerian Root – two of THE most recommended ingredients for sleeplessness, this combination of herbs and modern meds seemed to have covered all bases, if the raves were true (Bonus – Driftoff offers a money back guarantee!). The concensus, it’s even though it is non-habit forming, I wouldn’t take it EVERY night. Definitely use approximately 30-45 minutes before you want to go to sleep and start with half a dose (anxiety is listed as a side-effect).

CASH ON THE SPOT WE PAY YOU CASH FOR YOUR GENTLY USED CURRENT FASHIONS, SHOES, PURSES AND ACCESSORIES.

Available on Amazon for $21.00

Unisom

This is one sleep aid I used when I was pregnant and came highly recommended by my doctor, who always errs on the side of caution, so I split it in half just to be on the safe side and it actually worked! I am not a fan of medicine unless it is absolutely needed and in my case, it was. I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t wake up with the sleep-aid hangover that I had heard about. In fact, I took a whole dose and still felt pretty good in the morning. Make sure you read the warnings (in case you are on other medications that don’t jive with Unisom) but overall, this one was a thumbs-up! — Available at Walgreens for $8.00

Children’s Benedryl

That’s right, another standard that pretty much everyone has in their medicine cabinet – Children’s Benedryl is not only safe, but works shockingly well to calms nerves and help you sleep. Of course, the liquid form tastes terrible, but works amazingly well. Another sleep-aid that is safely recommended by doctors and is generally safe during pregnancy, Children’s Benedryl can be taken as needed and is very affordable. — Available at Target for $5.39 ••• *Make sure to check with your doctor before taking any medications.

SPOTLIGHT | ALLISON CAUDLE Raised in Raleigh as the middle child of three daughters, Allison Caudle grew up watching her parents balance family life with business ownership. She followed in their footsteps, now splitting her time between her role as mom of two daughters in her newly blended family and her role as the Owner and Broker-in-Charge at Southern Lux Living.

Katie Manton Photography

A REALTOR / Broker since 2007, Allison is in hot demand, serving the real estate needs of the Triangle and surrounding areas. She co-opened an international real estate company in 2014, which grew to over 50 agents, closing over 800 houses a year. Allison herself has been listed among the top agents in the North Carolina, having sold over $300 million in real estate. She holds multiple awards for being Top Producer in the industry.

“I truly love what I do,” says Allison. “I listen, I’m patient, I educate, I help, I do what I say I’m going to do, and I’m there until the end. Working with buyers and sellers is such a deep passion of mine. Staging homes, watching people fall in love with a home, hearing stories of how couples met, meeting the entire family, hearing squeals of kids as they pick their rooms during the final walk-through, watching sellers glow with pride as they give me a tour of their home—for me, this is what it’s all about.”

Her goal is not only 100% customer satisfaction, but also achieving 100% personal satisfaction in the home/work life balance “ Anywhere my family is, is home,” says Allison, as she demonstrates how working mothers can balance the exciting demands of a career with the comforts of family life. The satisfaction Allison gets from being a mom does not mean everything is flawless all the time. “We are raising two girls,” Allison says, “so I try to be a strong role model for them. It’s hard juggling sometimes and you don’t want to show your kids you struggle. But at the same time, you want them to know it’s ok not to be perfect all the time and hard work is key to being successful.” She prioritizes her family by taking her daughters to school and shopping; by attending school events, theater practice, and concerts; and enjoying singalong car rides. While there’s not a lot of downtime, Allison does get a little bit of “me” time in the mornings: “I get up every morning, make breakfast and lunch for everyone, turn on the news, drink my coffee and have 30 minutes to myself. Then it is FULL on!”

VOTED BEST HOUSE CLEANER IN WAKE COUNTY

On the business side, Allison incorporates her family by making sure her clients know that her family is her “Why,” and she tries to put aside the mom guilt of needing to work long hours. Allison admits she has trouble asking for help herself, but encourages other working mothers to do so: “Don’t be scared to show you need help. Don’t be afraid to ask for it.”

Sometimes for Allison, help even comes from her daughters who help staging homes and drop off fliers, and provide support in the social media and technology realms. That said, she also sets boundaries around phone and computer time. When she and her family are having a conversation, she’s puts down her phone and is present. That feeling of being present is key, Allison says, both with others, and with yourself. It’s just as important to take time for you and to take time alone with your romantic partner. Let your children see where your priorities lie, and they will learn by example. “I think when I started feeling comfortable vocalizing my ‘why,’ I knew nothing could stop me. When I get to do what I love every day, make a good living out of it, AND raise my daughters…trust me, I know how fortunate I am. I love being a mom, I love real estate, and lucky me, I get to do them both! And so can you. To find out more about Allison and Southern Lux Living, visit SouthernLuxLiving.com. FIND THE

SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE TIPS TO FINDING THE RIGHT PIECES

“I have to have it!” “That has my name all over it!” It feels right. Our happy place says yes! We politely ignore internal dialog about practical considerations. “Yes, it’s a little big, but it’s so beautiful…” And so you buy it...Sound familiar? Who hasn’t done that? Many times over for this little self-proclaimed flea market aficionado. We are most vulnerable when it’s something that brings us unexpected joy. You were going to Target to buy some laundry detergent, but then you see the coolest pouf in the furniture section, and it’s on sale! You feel fortunate to be the lucky soul to scoop it up before anyone else can. Who has time or energy to ask some practical questions about its size, color, mood or function? You know one thing: I WILL MAKE IT WORK. No matter what.

54 | triangle style

Written by Stephanie Finucane, owner of The Right Space, www.the-right-space.com

Then you bring it home. Wasn’t it a shade darker in the showroom? It’s a little smaller than you remember, too. Darn. But that’s ok. You’ll make it work… in another room. Months later, years later, its still there, and you’re more aggravated than joyful because the space still doesn’t f eel right and you have no idea why it’s lacking harmony. It’s not too late! Thanks to the rise of Marie Kondo’s wisdom, we are reexamining our stuff. However, there is more to it than sparking joy. Next time you’re sniffing out a good deal, stop, drop and listen to this one long-winded question: Does it solve a practical need (FUNCTION), and does it f eel like a mood match f or your space (MOOD) while also working with everything else in the space like color, size, texture, style (HARMONY)? Always start with function. Is it suitable in f unction and cost f or your space? Will it solve a practical issue? Is it in your budget?

Yes, you have a budget. If it passes the function test, you can move onto mood. A room has to have a mood. Good, bad or indifferent, there’s a mood and energy in your space. How do you want it to feel? An earthy, comfortable, living room or a more f ormal, minimalist space? Think about it. Does the item contribute to that f eeling? Does it connect to the style you’re creating? If it does, you’re in luck. If not, please put that back. Finally, nothing leaves the store unless it passes the final test of harmony. Is it suitable in quality, proportion, scale and mood of the room you’re considering? Sesame Street used to share a skit about one thing that does not belong with the others. Cookie Monster, a chocolate chip cookie, the color blue and a green bean. Hint: it’s not the cookie. Next time you’re on the hunt or see an item that “sparks joy”, apply the Golden Rule of Great Interior Design: Function, Mood and Harmony. I think Marie would approve. •••

Paint color trends and home decorating color trends change on a regular basis; 2019 is no exception. What makes this year's hot color trends so delectable is the unexpected tones gaining popularity. Check out these three scrumptious colors for yourself

This hot 2019 color also pairs perfectly with quintessential color favorites, like navy, white, and black. COLORS WE LIKE: BENJAMIN MOORE™ WETHERSFIELD MOSS SHERWIN WILLIAMS OAKMOSS SW 6180

Coral Unless you've been living under a rock as of late, you've no doubt already heard that coral is this year's must-have color for fashion. This hot fashion color has made its way to home decorating too. Think front doors painted in a rich shade of coral, accent pillows with splashes of coral color, and even throw rugs and draperies in this yummy shade. If you add only one color to your repertoire this year, make it coral for dramatic impact. The right design can make a huge difference, especially when working with a small room. Whether you are cursed with a tiny bathroom or troubled by a small bedroom, there are design and décor tricks you can use to make the most of the space you do have and make every room in your house look bigger and more inviting. Here are some simple and effective design hacks that will make your rooms look larger.

Mirrors -

Nothing creates the illusion of space quite as effectively, or enchantingly, as a well-placed mirror. A corner-mounted mirror can expand the room and make it look beautiful and roomy, while a wall-mounted mirror can make the space look twice as large.

Create color zones

Using color schemes is a great way to trick the eye and make the space look bigger, so look for ways to color code the room. Grouping similarly colored throw rugs in one part of the room or sorting the books on your bookshelf by color can have a surprisingly great effect.

58 | triangle style

Avoid tall furniture

Tall furniture in a small room can make the space look even more cramped, so choose your chairs, tables and other items with care. A small squat chair is much better for a small bedroom than a taller high-backed chair, and the same is true of other pieces of furniture.

Build in storage

A small room means a lack of storage space, so it pays to take advantage of what you have to work with. A bed f rame with built-in drawers can eliminate the need for a space-hogging dresser or wardrobe, and a bookcase headboard can reduce the need for additional shelving and storage space.

Use wall-mounted shelves

Wall-mounted shelves can maximize storage space while making the room look larger and roomier. Use an assortment of wallmounted shelves arrayed at different heights to create a better and more eclectic look.

Go Glass

Transparent f urnishings can make your small room look larger, so look for ways to incorporate glass into your interior design. Replacing your traditional desk with a

glass-topped table, f or instance, can make your small room look larger and more attractive.

. Stick with light-colored bedding

You already know that painting your small room a lighter color can make it look larger, but the same is true of your bedding. If your bedroom is on the small side, it is best to stick with light-colored and light-patterned sheets, pillowcases and blankets.

Choose the right accent lamps

Small accent lamps are best for tiny rooms, so choose your lighting options with care. Avoid large and bulky lamps that could make your already cramped quarters look smaller. Decorating a small room can be a real challenge, but there are ways to make almost any space look larger and roomier. Whether it is your tiny bedroom or your less than optimally sized kitchen, the decorating tricks listed above can help you make the most of the space you do have and make your small room look larger than it really is. •••

What’s an oldie-but-goodie cleaning tip you can share?

Microwave covered in food splatters? Fill a bowl with water and vinegar and microwave for 3-5 minutes. Thesteam will loosen the food particles. Wipe out the inside of your microwave and it will once again be sparkling clean.

Whether it’s the men in your life who take great pride in their beards (or need to start), new moms who could use a little pampering or that best gal who needs a lipstick in every shade of the rainbow, the Triangle is filled with new and classic beauty brands and retailers to shop from for the holidays! — Kimberly Arnold

Ceiling fans covered in dust? Take a pillowcase and slide it over the blade. As you wipe the blade, the dust will fall into the pillowcase rather than onto the bed/f urniture below. Once the dust is removed, clean the blade with a damp microfiber cloth to gather any remaining dust.

What do you find is the biggest misconception new clients have about a cleaning service?

It takes longer to clean your home the first time you hire a service. Professional cleaners are scrubbing areas that many homeowners skip, such as blinds and baseboards. While the professionals are exceptional at what they do, they aren’t perf ect. You’ll enjoy the service more if you have realistic expectations. If you f eel something is missed, most prof essional cleaning services will send someone out to reclean a missed area. Just let them know. No one sees your home the way you do. •••

Goodbye lads! a S g n i r o B

STRAWBERRY SPINACH SALAD WITH A HOMEMADE RED WINE VINAIGRETTE. Strawberry season is here! This salad is so hearty that you can eat it as a meal in itself. I ate it as a side with grilled chicken. This spinach salad is so easy to make and full of good stuff: Fresh strawberries, red onions, toasted walnuts and feta cheese. Blue cheese would also be great!

This recipe yields enough for 2 large meal sized salads or 4 side salads. Enjoy! FOR THE RED WINE VINAIGRETTE:

1/2 cup olive oil 1/4 cup red wine vinegar 1 teaspoon dijon mustard Salt and pepper, to taste

Whisk together all ingredients in a small bowl. FOR THE STRAWBERRY SPINACH SALAD:

1 (6-ounce) package baby spinach 1-1/2 cups strawberries, sliced or quartered 1/3 cup thinly sliced red onion 1/2 cup toasted chopped walnuts 1/3 cup crumbled feta or blue cheese Toss together all ingredients in a large bowl. Drizzle with red wine vinaigrette.

Kale Fruit Salad with Lemon Poppy Seed Vinaigrette

When I took the first bite of this kale salad, I was like, “OH. MY. WORD.”

FOR THE VINAIGRETTE: 3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar 3 tablespoons spicy mustard 1-1/2 teaspoons kosher salt 3/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 cup honey 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon poppy seeds FOR THE SALAD: 1 bunch kale, washed, large stems removed and roughly chopped 1 (15-ounce) can mandarin oranges (no sugar added – in water), drained 1 (15-1/4-ounce) can pineapple chunks (in juice), drained 1/2 cup dried cranberries 3/4 cup toasted chopped walnuts 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese

There’s just something about the combination of kale with mandarin oranges, pineapple, dried cranberries, toasted walnuts, and feta cheese drizzled with that sweet and sour vinaigrette! spring | 65

Greek Salad

WITH BLACKENED SHRIMP and a homemade Greek dressing I’ve never made a Greek dressing before and I do like I normally do when testing recipes… add a little of this, add a little of that until I get it just like I want it. It took me about 20 minutes to get this dressing like I wanted it but it was a total SCORE in the end. I’ll definitely be making homemade it instead of store-bought in the future!

FOR THE DRESSING:

(YIELDS APPROX 1-1/3 CUPS):

if your family likes to go heavy on the dressing, I would consider doubling the recipe

1 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon minced fresh garlic 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1-1/2 teaspoons dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1 tablespoon honey 1/3 cup red wine vinegar Whisk all dressing ingredients together in a small bowl. Meet and Greet

BOVENIZER & BAKER ORTHODONTICS

With long-term roots in the community – Dr. Bo (left began the practice in 2006 with Dr. Baker (right) coming aboard in 2015

The welcoming office staff walk new patients through the free one-hour consultations, complete with a take-home swag bag.

SMILES ARE THE GUIDING PRINCIPLE AT BOVENIZER & BAKER, and not only because it’s an orthodontics office! The goal is to create an enjoyable patient experience from the initial scheduling phone call to the first consultation to the final visit. The entire office is outfitted to serve the needs of each patient on any given day, with coffee and other drinks, fresh-baked cookies and other snacks, blankets for chilly days, umbrellas for when it’s raining, and sunglasses and chapstick year round. The friendly, personable service carries through each step of the patient process.

During the first visit, the Treatment Coordinator will take photos and x-rays, while Dr. Todd Bovenizer or Dr. Christopher Baker will conduct an oral examination and provide treatment options. As no one treatment style fits all, individualized treatment plan options are explored, while communication via email, phone, and text keeps doctors, parents, and patients in consistent direct contact. When it is time to discuss a financial quote, non-interest payment options and direct payments from most insurance carriers make the financing of high-quality treatment available for every budget.

New patients are celebrated with highlights on the Welcome Board, while Patient Appreciation events such as food trucks and free movie nights, along with a Rewards Hub Program, keep current patients engaged throughout the years.

First-time braces are celebrated with Dippin’ Dots, while braces removal is celebrated with candy and popcorn. Handwritten notes from the staff are an important personal touch that ensures each patient and their family has the best orthodontic experience in the Triangle area. With longterm roots in the community – and a family spirit throughout the office, genuine connections with patients makes the office feel like a second home. Patients forget they’re in a doctor’s office, and instead enjoy the fun that puts perfect smiles on everyone’s faces. •••

WRITTEN BY LOU SCOTT It took Marcel Proust seven volumes to write Remembrance of Things Past. Writing a memoir is something most of us don’t do. Perhaps we’re too busy, or are under the impression this sort of thing is best reserved f or the famous. Yet everyone is a legend - or will be - in the eyes of her own family. Genealogists are happy with just a name. Think how much more connected they would feel to find stories to go along with it. One way to reach out and touch these generations to come is to keep a birthday journal; writing just one or two pages every year is something almost everyone can do. Af ter a while it becomes a tradition - like birthday cake and ice cream. Choose a loose-leaf binder, so you can add pages as you go. Write about the significant events in your lif e, as well as those which seem less so but nevertheless mean something special to you: your satisfactions, your disappointments, your hopes for the future, even the world news that most affected you-but most importantly, write about your philosophy of life. It does change, you know. Keeping a yearly journal gives you a manageable history of your own lif e. Taken as a whole, it is much more interesting than you probably realize. Even if you’re a recluse- you can write about that. Just think what Emily Dickinson did with her experience. But suppose you persist in believing whatever you’re doing right now is not all that important, or

you’re sure to remember it regardless? Even if you’re right, your rendering won’t be authentic. You’ll be seeing life through a different lens now. The strongest associations are what seemed incidentals at the time--the way something looked or smelled, the name of your favorite song. Every time I hear “Key Largo,” the smell of eucalyptus trees and the steamy heat of Charleston at midnight, the windows of my VW rolled down and the music blaring - are right here beside me. Then the rest comes tumbling back: the pride of my f irst marriage, the devastation a year later when it failed; the joy of sanding f loors in an old house; the despair at leaving a town and friends I had loved; even the years I was imitating being a hippy. Sure I remember the highlights, but sometimes that is all. Put down the incidentals. Life really is in the details. Memory is a sort of kaleidoscope - your childhood, adolescence, work, retirement and the books you have read or the movies you have seen. All of it is significant but dif f icult to capture; it gets scrambled up by the time many years have past and some memories invariably get pushed into oblivion. But you’re never too old to start recording them; you could live till you’re ninety or even longer - a hefty amount of years and memories still to come. In one book, in one place, you can sit down with the remembrances of your own times past. You won’t wonder where it all went; you’ll know and “You will have become the hero of your own book.” •••

FREE CONSULT We Offer A FREE & FULLY CONFIDENTIAL Hair And Scalp Consultation.

Corlase Permanent Hair Removal, located in Cary is an award-winning facility SOLELY dedicated to permanent results in hair removal. Dana and Andrea use time tested technology and personal experience to deliver exceptional customer service AND RESULTS. We have tapped into Dana’s 25 years of experience to investigate five myths about permanent hair removal. MYTH: I’M THE ONLY ONE WITH HAIR LIKE THIS. THE TRUTH: No way! Statistics tell us that 97% of women remove unwanted hair. You are definitely not alone. We see many different issues causing hair growth on all types of women in various areas. Even your girlfriend who you think has none... Trust me, she is removing unwanted hair. MYTH: LASER HAIR REMOVAL DOESN’T LAST. THE TRUTH: Wrong! Laser is approved by the FDA for permanent hair reduction. If I reduce 95% of your hair and the remaining hair is very light and sparse, you are going to be very happy. We do this every day. Each person’s experience is dif f erent. EVERY CLIENT IS DIFFERENT AND WE TAILOR OUR SERVICES TO MEET YOUR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS. HAIR REMOVAL IS NOT A ONE SIZE FITS ALL SERVICE. You can NOT go by what your friend experienced. You need to do a thorough (complimentary) consultation to make sure you are receiving the correct treatment, be it electrolysis, laser, or a combination of both. Both electrolysis and laser are SAFE AND effective if done within the proper parameters. However, receiving laser treatments when you really are not a candidate or if the technician is not properly licensed can be a huge waste of money - not to mention, frustrating. 74 | triangle style

MYTH: IT’S TOO EXPENSIVE. THE TRUTH: At first glance, permanent hair removal can seem expensive. But if you consider the long term results of electrolysis and laser, it is a wise lifetime investment. No more ingrown hairs, razor bumps, dirty wax treatments, or the outrageous expense of razors and short term removal. Some areas of the body cost a little as $11 per week. You do, however, want to be very careful with clinics that offer deep discounts, run constant advertisements, or try to lock you into a contract. Licensed professionals do not have to give their services away at deep discount pricing. Nor do we have to insist on contracts to keep you coming back. THE best equipment, licensing, training, continuing education, and inspections ALL COST MONEY, BUT YOUR HEALTH AND WELLNESS IS WORTH THE EXTRA EXPENSE. OUR FILE CABINETS ARE FULL OF STORIES FROM CLIENTS WHO TRIED TO SAVE MONEY. Take a short cut TO SAVE MONEY somewhere else, but not WHEN dealing with your skin. MYTH: EVERYONE IS LICENSED. THE TRUTH: No! There are only 13 Licensed Laser Hair Practitioners in the ENTIRE state of North Carolina. A person may be a licensed in “something”, but ONLY an Electrologist or Laser Hair Practitioners have the highest training specif ically f or permanent means of hair removal. If someone is working in a MedSpa with a doctor “overseeing” them, no license, education or continuing ed or inspections are required and it is up to the doctor TO DETERMINE what LEVEL OF TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE is required. AT CORLASE WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON THE FACT THAT WE ARE LICENSED AND EXPERIENCED. WE MEET AND EXCEED ALL STATE REQUIREMENTS AND ARE CONSTANTLY HONING OUR SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE. Andrea and I have BOTH BATTLED WITH UNWANTED HAIR, THIS IS PERSONAL TO US. MYTH: LASER WORKS ON ALL HAIR.

THE TRUTH: Not true. Lasers do not work on all hair types or pigments. Lasers for hair removal will only work on hair that has a darker color to it. The hair removal laser is attracted to pigment so a lighter hair (red or gray hair) simply will not respond to a laser. Since we perf orm both electrolysis and laser at Corlase, we have the options to remove every hair color and type that you may have.

LUMINAJ, A MONTHLY ALL-NATURAL VEGAN SPA SUBSCRIPTION BOX THAT IS DESIGNED TO ELEVATE AND REJUVENATE WOMEN FROM THE INSIDE AND OUT LAUNCHES Beauty has been a long-time obsession for Cary business owner Christine Bryant even as a little girl. As she grew older, she began to experiment with allnatural beauty products which turned into pamper sessions at home. She then created a self -care process in which she realized taking care of yourself should never go un done. In January 2019, she created and launched the Luminaj spa box to connect women with non-toxic, cruelty free, products to upgrade their pamper days that is delivered to their doorstep at their convenience. “It is true, our skin is or largest organ and we should be mindful of what we allow to absorb into it. Toxic elements that absorb into our skin not only effects our skin but our mental and physical state too. Being mindful and aware of what goes onto our skin is a big step for practicing self-care.” www.luminajspabox.com

A BETTER LIFE Demián Bichirs was nominated for best actor for his portrayal of a decent hardworking man, who years bef ore had crossed the border from Mexico in order to find a better life. Working long days as a landscaper in Los Angeles, the sole parent of a teenage son who is in danger of falling in with the wrong crowd, he is doing all he can. Consequently when his boss tells him he is going back to Mexico to buy a small farm and wants to sell his tools and truck, his sister insists on giving him a loan to buy them. On the first day of working for himself, however, both the truck and tools are stolen. His son, on the brink of getting into drugs, reluctantly helps to find them. DESCENDANTS, nominated f or best picture and best actor, this is a quietly powerful film. George Clooney portrays a wealthy landowner who is devastated af ter his wif e has a boating accident that leaves her in a coma. His eldest daughter, so angry that he doesn’t know her mother was having an affair, tells him so, adding that she had intended to divorce him. Stunned, he really had no idea what had been going on at home. Now he realizes his wif e was lonely, his eldest daughter was into drugs and his youngest was having problems at school. How does he deal with all that anger? What does he do with all that grief? With sensitivity, sprinkled with humor, he finds a way how. RADIO DAYS, Another Woody Allen movie that received a best original writing nomination, this is sheer nostalgia, a sweet and amusing tale about a wacky Jewish family, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, who in the late 1930s and early 1940s, all live under one roof, in one apartment. Their lives, woven in and out of the programs on the radio, begin with the breakf ast shows, then move on to soap operas, sports, cooking shows and situation comedies. But they’re not the only f amily whose lives revolve around the radio. In the apartment across the way, what do they see? Why, it’s their little boy’s schoolteacher, wearing only a towel and dancing her heart away to a song that’s playing on the radio.
