I think back to our first days in our publisher’s basement concepting, collaborating and dreaming of what this new publication would be. First finding a name, then a logo—so much goes into a thing like this that often can go unnoticed. Who would have thought my newborn son would be used as a cover prop? #proud_working_mom_moment A day does not go by where I don’t feel proud of what we have become. From the talented editors who come up with interesting concepts to the contributors who write entertaining columns to the creative designers who help me make it visually beautiful to the amazing sales team who keep us alive—we are truly family. I now have known some of my colleagues for the better part of my adult life and am proud to call them friends. The faces that have come and gone over the last 10 years have made us who we are. My gratitude toward them goes without saying. We’ve worked together to bring you, the readers, a product you hopefully look forward to every issue. As always, this issue has intriguing content, from business and society to dining (check out the yummy spaghetti recipe on p. F8) and, of course, the ever-exciting homes around St. Louis. That is what we do. We give you a glimpse into the world of your fellow St. Lousians, their lives, careers and homes. Thank you to our readers for supporting us and always coming back for more. We work to ensure that your event doesn’t just go according to plan, but exceeds expectations.” The space features flatscreen monitors, theater lights, a high-end sound system and the capability to meet more complex audio-visual needs. The unique features make it perfect for corporate meetings, training sessions or seminars. The worldclass facilities have hosted organizations like Stifel, Cisco, Washington University, Harris-Stowe State University and the University of Missouri. “Everything is interactive and customizable,” Holtzman notes. “The screens, sound and lighting can be adjusted. We also have room dividers so the space can physically be altered to better fit your needs, whether you’re meeting with 20 or 200 employees.” From birthday and graduation parties to weddings and bar and bat mitzvahs, Vue 17 can customize various private events. “Our facilities can be engineered to fit your unique needs,” Holtzman says. While there are no in-house food and beverage services, University Tower works with several local caterers, and the venue includes a warming kitchen. Vue 17 is equipped with broadcast technology as well, so your event is not confined to the physical venue—an especially useful tool right now. “It is a really cool place to record in,” Holtzman says. “We have all of the necessary infrastructure, including a full sound stage, cameras and crew. It’s a great way to raise the level of production and

You can communicate with your audience and even interact with them in real time whether they’re across town or across the globe.” Beyond hosting events, Vue 17 has a partner company, Outreach Studios, that offers even more tech resources. It helps businesses and individuals produce TV shows, broadcast product launches and even organize virtual meetings to connect with employees and clients, which Holtzman notes has been helpful with the pandemic. “We have multiple studios along with rooms for news, green screen work and focus groups,” he explains. “We also help with pre- and post-production and still photography. Working with multiple organizations, from businesses to charities and religious organizations, we do whatever we can to help clients get creative.” With COVID-19 impacting so many events, the flexibility Vue 17 offers is invaluable. To ensure people’s safety during in-person gatherings, the space is outfitted with an ionizer air filtration system, and University Tower follows Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations for sanitization throughout the building. “Like all industries, we’ve been impacted by the pandemic,” Holtzman says. “As things open up again, we’re excited to share this one-of-a-kind space with everyone.” &

As they say (whoever ‘they’ are), if there’s a sucker born every minute, there’s a scam created every 30 seconds. (OK, we just said that.) The latest scams, plural, relate to the COVID-19 vaccine. There’s a lot of stress and uncertainty about who, where and when, and the ‘frustration’ needle for many of us who’ve already self-quarantined for almost nine months may be swinging into the red—the ‘desperation’ zone. And the cynicism of scammers thrives on impatient, desperate people. Don’t get sucked into any of these five solicitations detailed for consumers by the Federal Trade Commission. And there are probably many more yet to be reported. 1. Being asked to pay out of pocket for the vaccine. No. It’s free, unless there’s a small fee at the administration site. 2. Being asked to pay to get on a list for an appointment or for early access. You can get on a waiting list at any number of providers, but there’s no ‘cutting in line.’ 3. Being asked to respond immediately to a phone call, email or message via social-media. Solicitations? Never. 4. Getting contacted by ‘the government’ or ‘your health plan.’ Be wary. The first is definitely bogus. But your health plan or a legitimate provider may be calling to alert you to an available appointment. 5. Asking you to pay for the vaccine to be shipped directly to you. There are no secret sources of the vaccine, which in many cases needs to remain refrigerated in sub-zero temperatures until use. Bottom line? Be patient. We’ve all waited this long, after all, so it won’t hurt to hunker down just a little bit longer.

The Inns at St. Albans has hired a general manager as part of its initiative to transform the property into a historic travel and meeting destination. In his newly created position, Schuyler Clark will be responsible for all operations at the complex, which dates to 1843. Last year the company began building a $4 million, 11,000-square-foot lodge that will add 12 overnight rooms (for a total of 24 at The Inns) and additional meeting space for up to 25. Scheduled for completion by mid 2021, the lodge is part of an overall vision to redevelop the property into a resort-caliber destination. The Inns at St. Albans, nestled in hills first charted by Lewis and Clark near the Missouri River, is perched on what was once America’s western frontier. The scenic area is steeped in Americana—from the Osage tribe to Daniel Boone and even industrialists. Theodore Link, renowned designer of St. Louis Union Station, built The Studio Inn. For many years in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, St. Albans served as the country retreat of wealthy St. Louis families. Driving onto the vast property from the main road has given many a visitor the feeling of being magically transported into the Scottish highlands.

Who’s ready for a could-be Facebook-sized, feel-good success story, but with what seems like a possible happier ending? Or at least with fewer rancorous Congressional hearings. When the economic lemon that is the coronavirus pandemic claimed in-school learning as a casualty last spring, Chuck Cohn had already been perfecting his lemonade recipe for more than 10 years. His ‘lemonade stand’ is Varsity Tutors, which started as a way of matching students with in-person tutors. Cohn had greatly benefited from friends at WashU who tutored him when he was struggling to comprehend calculus. In 2007, he launched the company from his dorm room as a way to market his friends’ services to a wider audience. Fast-forward to last spring, when digital meetings exploded via Zoom and entrepreneurs like Cohn were well-positioned to be wildly successful—and of maximum service. So, is Cohn a mensch? Well, here’s the mitzvah. When the pandemic hit, Varsity offered its remote-learning K-12 platform to students at no charge. (Mark Zuckerberg he ain’t.) The company approached $120 million in revenue for 2020. Of course, 2021 started off no less a lemon. But next thing you know, it’s all rainbows and unicorns for Cohn’s brainchild, now known as Nerdy Inc. A unicorn, at least, that is. That’s what a company becoming capitalized for $1 billion is known as in investment circles. Nerdy Inc. announced Jan. 29 that it had received a $1.7 billion investment. Gulp. So that means it’s off to Silicon Valley, right? Not so fast. Nerdy, which will be traded on the New York Stock Exchange as NRDY, will be the latest tech gem to stay right here in The Lou.

WELL, WELL, WELL. WHERE DO I BEGIN?

With the storming of the Capitol? The stunning fact that a bare-chested man wearing horns on his head and some sort of weird warrior outfit was arrested and his mom talked to the press about how he couldn’t eat because the jail would not serve him vegan meals? Perhaps he should have considered that before breaking and entering the Senate Chamber. Or perhaps I should spend some time on Rudy Giuliani, once known as America’s Mayor after helping the country mend following the 9/11 attacks. He held two bizarre press conferences. One in front of the Four Seasons Landscaping Business, which we were to believe was always the plan and not the Four Seasons Hotel; another where the poor guy started sweating and his hair color dripped down his cheeks, ensuring he could never be taken seriously again and causing many of us to wonder what exactly he was using to cover those gray hairs.

And then I thought, I should start out a bit slower and stick with a topic I’ve always wanted to explore: the origin of Velveeta. Why does this cheese not have to be refrigerated, and why does it leave a film on the top of your mouth after you eat it? Why am I thinking about this now? Velveeta is the king of cheese for the Super Bowl. But fortunately for you, my friend Rachel informed me that her new children’s book is about to hit the shelves. And to be honest, in the midst of an insurrection, the crazy world of politics, my weird obsession with cheese and a pandemic that won’t end, maybe I should tell you about something that will warm your heart instead of cause you to scratch your head. Rachel Nolen and Maria Price are two friends who have written a book about a cow named Truman. Years ago, Maria was on a trip with her kids, and her daughter asked what a bale of hay was. WELCOME TO GET IGNITED!

This column will feature and celebrate people who are up to exciting things. You’ll learn more about their stories and how they bring their spark to the world. I will explore their strengths and who they are at their best. Maybe you’ll catch a bit of their inspiration—something we all can use a dose of these days. This month, I am featuring Dr. Phil Woodmore, a man who not only creates bright futures for his music students, but who also directs and creates soul-stirring experiences that lead to transformative conversations. Woodmore is a musician, composer, conductor, director, author and teacher who cultivates some of the nation’s finest talent. He is a man who thinks big … REALLY BIG—not just for himself, but for everyone who is lucky enough to be in his world or audience. As social issues have moved to the forefront of America’s conscience, Woodmore has become a go-to for creating collective experiences that transport audiences. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, he co-led an event that included a reading of “The Drum Major Instinct,” one of King’s final sermons. When the virtual curtain was raised, more than 3,000 people from more than 20 countries were in attendance. Woodmore composed original scores that were performed by The Phil Woodmore Singers, and King’s haunting sermon was read by a cast that included U.S. Rep. Jamaal Bowman and actor Moses Ingram of The Queen’s Gambit. Ultimately, the international audience shared their reactions to and thoughts about the words and lessons of Dr. King. (A virtual choir performance of the composition “Be Steadfast” can be found on YouTube.) Recently, one of the largest banks in the world asked Woodmore to bring his gifts to their advertising campaign. Citi commissioned him to compose and play a version of “America the Beautiful” using only the white keys of a piano, and then a version using both the black and white keys. In just 45 seconds, Woodmore drove the point home that we are better together. The recording can be found on Citi’s Facebook page. In the wake of Michael Brown’s shooting in Ferguson, Woodmore was asked to compose and direct a related musical experience based on the Greek tragedy Antigone. He brought together local police officers, protesters, civic leaders and educators to form a choir. Veteran actors came to Ferguson and read ancient texts while the choir brought the house down with its moving performance. According to Woodmore, the music “created an outlet and an open door for the audience to have an honest and genuine conversation— not just discussing what you should be saying and what people want to hear.” Antigone in Ferguson became a blockbuster success, travelling across the U.S. and Europe and airing on PBS. Woodmore is a gifted musician, but what sets him apart is how he combines this talent with his ability to connect people and inspire them to go beyond what they thought was possible. His students may find themselves going from timid to fully expressive. Members of his audiences may find themselves speaking when they’ve been silent or listening when they’ve been distracted. Some may soften their edges, while others may find their strength. No matter what, everyone will know they’ve been part of something worthwhile. The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra has appointed Stephanie Childress to the role of assistant conductor. A violinist, she started her own ensemble, Orchestra Rheia, in 2019. Childress has been making 2020/2021 season debuts conducting the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic and Orchestre de Paris, among others.

Katherine Park has been named interim director of health services for the Parkway School District. She has been with the district for 17 years and was honored with the 2020 Missouri School Nurse of the Year from the Missouri Association of School Nurses. She holds a master’s degree in nursing, public and school health from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

T. J. Redmond has joined commercial real estate firm Balke Brown Transwestern as director of capital markets. He recently served as senior vice president for CBRE, specializing in office investment sales. Redmond was named one of the St. Louis Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 honorees in 2020. Ruth Lee recently was named chief executive officer of Connections to Success, a nonprofit that helps people living in poverty gain economic independence. Saint Louis University has named Sarah Cunningham vice president for student development. Renee Brummell Franklin has been promoted to chief diversity officer at the Saint Louis Art Museum. She will work with all departments to implement initiatives, including a report on diversity, equity, access and inclusion. Franklin has worked for the museum since 1998 and served most recently as director of audience development. A life well-lived, James L. Manion was a man with a wide smile, jovial laugh, and welcoming hand. He attended St. Louis University High School and graduated from Wa s h i n g t o n University in 1952. He then joined the United States Air Force and served as a Fighter Pilot from 1952-1956. In 1957 he joined the family business, Gladys Manion Real Estate, where he led until his retirement in 2002. Jimmie was a pioneer, astute businessman, and community leader during those years. He was Head of the committee to develop & build Racquet Club Ladue, Co-Founder of Boone Valley Golf Club, Founding Director for Bank of Ladue, Director of Landmark Bank, President of both Racquet Club St. Louis and Racquet Club Ladue, President of the Clayton Club and Director of the St. Louis Realtors Board. Jimmie was a long time member of Bellerive Country Club and loved playing golf, gin, squash, fly fishing, horseback riding, duck hunting at Windfall Farm, and spending weekends at his home overlooking Boone Valley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne Hager Manion, and sisters Muffie & Jeannie. He is survived by his three children Lang (Maryann) Manion, Peggy (Jim) Slaughter, and Stafford (Cathy) Manion, and grandchildren, Katen, Anne, Jack, and Ford.

Stewart is an honor student, swimmer and water polo player, and he plans to major in biology and pre-med studies in college.

Children’s author John Green, a 1970s alumnus, paid a virtual visit to students at the school along with his first-grade teacher, Christine Williams, now an Emmy-winning ABC News executive producer. They read two of Green’s books, Dream Jumper and Dream Grabber, and talked about their career paths. Copies of the books were given to students and Ladue School District elementary libraries.

SUMMER ADVENTURE CUB CREEK SCIENCE AND ANIMAL CAMP

by stephanie wallace SUMMER CAMP CAN BE ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES of a child’s

life. It’s a time to make new friends and pursue interests in a fun, supportive environment. Cub Creek Science and Animal Camp is keeping that tradition going strong, even with the uncertainty of the pandemic. Located on a 300-acre exotic animal ranch just north of Rolla, Missouri, it offers children ages 7 to 17 a summer of both adventure and education. Cub Creek held camp at reduced capacity in 2020. Assistant camp and creative director Ari Farley says the administration realized it was important to open even in difficult circumstances. “In the spring, we had families call to cancel, but we also had many parents checking to make sure their kids could have something to do in the summer,” she says. “While we had to adjust or postpone some activities, it ultimately was rewarding to see our campers interact with the animals, engage with each other and explore the outdoors.” Along with fewer campers at each session, safety adjustments included face covering and distancing guidelines. The camp will apply the lessons it learned last year to its one-week sessions this summer from May 30 to Aug. 7. Farley notes that campers and staff alike will have a better understanding of COVID-19 safety protocols. “We’re coming in with knowledge and experience, and we’re thankful for the opportunity to run camp even better,” she says. “It’s important that kids can be happy and do normal things in these abnormal times. We’ve found new, safe ways to help them create special memories.” One thing campers still can look forward to is hands-on animal encounters. Cub Creek is home to more than 300 creatures, including birds, insects, reptiles, amphibians and mammals. Through supervised lessons, kids and teens learn about proper handling and care along with important scientific concepts. Beyond practical skills and knowledge, they also develop lasting connections with the animals. “Our camel Malachi joined us 10 years ago as a baby, so many of our campers have grown up alongside him,” Farley says. “The kids bond just as much with the animals as with each other.” The camp also is renowned for its STEM program, which includes chemistry, physics and ecology. This year, it’s adding even more outdoor activities to its roster to give campers the chance to directly engage with nature. “We’re very proud of our animal and science programming, but we also do many traditional camp activities, from making friendship bracelets and hiking to archery and cave exploring,” Farley says. “There is so much to do, you couldn’t possibly get it done in one week.” Cub Creek also has a ropes course, which includes climbing walls and a zip line. Parents should start planning for summer activities now, according to Farley. While many families wait until spring, reaching out to camp administrators sooner will give you the opportunity to share your unique circumstances and concerns. “With the pandemic, everyone has their own distinct dynamic and challenges, so that means they have different questions,” she notes. “We love hearing from our families about their specific needs and what they want to happen SUMMER ACTIV ITIES this summer. The Ladue Horton Watkins High School senior recently launched her first single, “Lullabye,” with a music video featuring scenes filmed at the school. Previously, the singer appeared on local stages like The Fabulous Fox Theatre and even opened for major recording artists like J. Moss and Brian McKnight. Now, she is preparing her second single, “Keep it 100.” To learn more, find her on social media @highonmorgan. When did your interest in music start? When I was young, I would listen to music with my mom and grandmother. I also would sing around the house constantly; I must have driven my parents crazy. My grandmother probably was the first one who supported me and thought I could be a singer. One of my favorite memories was the first time I sang in church when I was 9. I performed “Thank You Lord” and received a standing ovation. It was a pretty awesome experience.

What do you want to do with music in the future? I want to be able to make a living as an artist and vocalist, but first, I need to go to school and learn how to do it! Lately, I’ve been watching Game of Thrones, and we just got a new puppy named Kash. Hanging out with him has been a lot of fun.

it then, but I have thought of it many times throughout our growth and evolution. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary this issue, I do believe those voices spoke the truth. T&S no longer feels like the little sister on the playground, but rather the older and wiser sibling who has experience and knowledge (and some skinned knees)! And after 10 years, we feel fully confident in our solid position in the St. Louis community.

The past year has challenged not just our paper, but publications across the globe as well. The pandemic has made us all think about what we read, how we consume information and how that content makes us feel. Mailing directly into the homes of our readers turned out to be a major blessing. We all have been tied to our homes more than ever, while also wanting to remain part of our community. Town&Style is not just a business or a publication, but a powerful tool for connecting us and reminding us what is so compelling about our wonderful city. In a time when there is so much conflict, our ultimate goal of being a ‘good news’ paper is all the more relevant. We look forward to the day that we can go back to photographing and publishing party pics for all of our fantastic local nonprofits. A Better Jewelry Buying Experience

hen you enter HK Fine Estate Jewels in Ladue, you won’t be met with a standard jewelry store experience. Instead of walking directly into a traditional showroom, guests are greeted with a comfortable seating area with a full bar and television decorated with vintage photos of glamour icons like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. “It’s a less intimidating, more enjoyable buying experience,” owner Kristen G. Holton says. “I like to get to know my clients and better understand their objectives.” HK Fine Estate Jewels is focused on creating a stress-free environment for customers. Holton uses a fee model that allows her clients to fully understand what their money is going toward. “Usually when purchasing jewelry, there is a veil around how much items have been marked up so the seller can profit, which can make people feel frustrated or like they are being taken advantage of,” she says. “Rather than inflating prices, I clearly break down the cost of the piece, my overhead and my fee. I like to consider myself more of a consultant or adviser.” There are several advantages to choosing estate jewelry, according to Holton. “You often get a higher quality piece at significant savings,” she says. “You also can get pieces that newer mining or sourcing restrictions make impossible to create today.” Along with offering classic craftsmanship, estate pieces are a more ethical and environmentally friendly option. SSM HEALTH WEIGHT MANAGEMENT SERVICES

by julia m. johnson LOSING WEIGHT FOR BETTER HEALTH MAKES A LOT OF SENSE, but it can

be a real challenge for many, according to SSM Health bariatric surgeon Dr. Aaron Bornstein. For patients with a significant number of pounds to lose, surgical options may be the best approach, he says. Bornstein practices at SSM Health Weight Management Services at St. Clare Hospital, a newly opened office that expands on services offered at SSM Health DePaul Hospital. He explains that the entire practice is dedicated to educating patients about weight loss procedures with the goal of better health and a higher quality of life. Two of the most common weight loss treatments are sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgeries. The former surgically reduces the size of the stomach, and the latter sections off a part of the stomach and reroutes a portion of the small intestine. Both can help the patient manage appetite and food intake as a means toward losing weight. “The main idea is portion control,” Bornstein says. “You feel full faster when eating and take in fewer calories each day. Some people may see weight loss surgery as a drastic step, but when you think about the money and time spent on diets and other weight-loss plans, surgery makes a great deal of sense. It’s very safe, and the results are long-lasting.” Bornstein, Dr. Mario Morales and Dr. Andrea Schwoerer are available for consultations, and a team of counselors and dietitians works to ensure each patient’s needs are met. “For COVID-19 safety reasons, we can do consultations virtually, and we offer pre- and postoperative video seminars so patients know what to expect during the entire process,” Bornstein says. During an initial visit, the physician

discusses medical history and appropriate treatment options, and then the patient meets with the dietitian and counselor. Once insurance requirements have been met, the office can schedule a date for the procedure. There is usually a one- or two-night hospital stay, and most people take a week or two off work. According to Bornstein, both sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass are effective ways of reducing weight and keeping it off. “The sleeve procedure is appropriate for 70% to 80% of people needing significant weight reduction, but it may not be an option for those with acid reflux or diabetes,” he says. “These patients may need to consider gastric bypass instead. It accomplishes both weight reduction and treatment of reflux.” Bornstein says the most important question he asks patients is, “What is your main goal in losing weight?” He says it’s not just about slimming down, it’s also about feeling healthier and controlling medical problems related to obesity. “Under a doctor’s supervision, many weight loss patients can discontinue medications for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and others see improvement in their sleep apnea,” he notes. “Our weight loss procedures are minimally invasive, safe and effective, and there is zero judgment; we understand that talking about your weight and eating habits can be difficult. That’s why our compassionate team approach works so well.” &

Served with ranch dressing, it includes mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, red onion, croutons and cheddar. While perhaps not the most exciting option, it was fresh with nice flavors.

have responded by upping their takeout game, some even creating special menus to cater to those who don’t want to dine indoors. That’s what Baileys’ Restaurants did with Wing Ding Dong, a concept launched last fall that’s available for pickup and delivery only. The ghost kitchen operates out of Baileys’ Range downtown and focuses on one thing: chicken.

name, so we had to try them. Dry rubbed, smoked and finished in the oven, these have an awesome smoky flavor. Every sauce we tried worked well with the wings, but they aren’t necessary to enjoy them.

CRISPY CHICKEN FINGERS ▶ $6/three

While the wings are smoked, fans of the fryer need not worry. There are plenty of fried chicken offerings. These white-meat tenders aren’t overly breaded, which is a major plus. They were fried a little hard but weren’t so overdone that the chicken was dry. A solid choice if wings aren’t your thing.

SPICY CHICKEN SANDWICH ▶ $12 There

are two fried chicken sandwich offerings. The spicy one has a nice kick, but the heat isn’t too intense. It’s served on a beer bun with traditional fixings (i.e. lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mayo). It also was fried hard, ensuring the breading was very crispy, but the chicken was still juicy.

overall » The menu may be small, but if you’re in the mood for wings or fried chicken, Wing Ding Dong is a great option for dinner or lunch. The Baileys’ Restaurants chose wisely with this ghost kitchen concept, and it has to be said, the name is a real winner.

As a kid, Matt Raithel dreamed of one day making video games. He eventually made that dream come true, starting out animating 3D models and environments and eventually becoming founder and studio director of Graphite Lab, an independent video game developer based in Maryland Heights.

In early 2020, Graphite Lab earned a major feather in its cap with the debut of RollerCoaster Tycoon Story, the latest installation of Atari’s popular RollerCoaster Tycoon franchise. Graphite Lab designed and built the game, from initial concept to its launch in January 2020. It’s been a success—players have given the game good reviews, and it was featured in Apple’s 5 New Games We Love list, Raithel says. RollerCoaster Tycoon Story is available on iPhone, iPad touch and Android devices.

Game enthusiasts, rejoice! Rec Hall, a bar offering activities like cornhole, ping-pong and giant Jenga, is opening another location in the St. Louis area. The first opened in St. Charles in December, and the second is slated to open this summer in the historic Armory District. The 250,000-square-foot Midtown location will feature an indoor soccer field, pickleball courts, virtual reality and fast-casual fare.

While this marks the first occasion Graphite Lab collaborated with Atari, the company has plenty of experience partnering with major brands, including Hasbro, Cartoon Network and Disney. Since its founding in 2009, Graphite Lab has developed more than 200 titles, earning millions of plays and top rankings in dozens of countries. The company creates its own completely independent games, too. The first was Hive Jump, released in January 2019 and available on Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. “That was a big win, proving that we can make games that are entirely our own creation,” Raithel says.

Throughout his career, he has witnessed some big shifts in the video game industry, most notably when it comes to the mobile market. “Before the iPhone came out, mobile was not an attractive industry,” he says. “Now, since games are digitally downloaded, you don’t have to deal with the manufacturing or retail process. EASY & CHEESY INSTANT POT SPAGHETTI AND MEATBALLS MAKES 24 MEATBALLS 1 LB. Directions: 1. In a small bowl, combine chopped onion, minced garlic and lemon juice; set aside. 2. Combine the dry ingredients (garlic powder, oregano, paprika, salt, pepper and bread crumbs), and set aside. 3. Place ground chicken in a large mixing bowl. Pour in the dry ingredients and egg; mix thoroughly. 4. Mix in the onion, garlic and lemon juice, followed by the cheese. 5. With a tablespoon, measure and form 24 meatballs. You can either refrigerate them up to 2 days or make them right away. 6. Generously grease the insert of a 6-quart Instant Pot. Form a layer on the bottom with the meatballs. They should be touching one another but not smushed. 7. Pour in the chicken broth. Break the spaghetti noodles in half, and place on top. weight can place a lot of strain on the circulatory system, creating ripple effects that increase your risk for serious health problems, says SLUCare cardiologist Dr. Stephanie Windish. “When we gain weight, the body has to create more capillaries to supply the added fat and muscle with blood,” she says. “The heart has to increase its mass and work harder to pump the blood to the extra tissue. This increases blood pressure and the metabolic needs of the heart and body.” Extra weight is closely associated with conditions that increase cardiovascular disease risk, like diabetes and high cholesterol, she says. Being obese in itself isn’t one of the risk factors, but it can lead to them. Windish says patients often state, “I may be overweight, but I’m healthy, so what’s the problem?” She explains that the health effects of extra weight tend to accumulate over time, so they may not be noticeable when you are younger. “As you age, there is a greater chance of developing diabetes and high blood pressure,” she says. “Your arteries become stiffer, and your body reacts differently to the intake of sugars. Older age is actually your highest risk factor.” She says there are other heart-related conditions people don’t necessarily connect with obesity. “It also can lead to sleep apnea, which causes extra strain on the right side of the heart, which pumps blood to the lungs,” she explains. “Obesity also affects the way the heart muscle relaxes and takes in blood flow. Patients often experience shortness of breath and edema, a condition where fluid accumulates and causes swelling in the body.” Windish notes that sensible, realistic weight loss is key to keeping the pounds off for better cardiovascular health. “Don’t go on a sudden juice fast or cleanse and expect to be able to run a marathon right off the bat,” she advises. “Instead, set a goal of gradually losing about 10% of your body weight in 6 to 12 months. That may not seem like a lot at first, but you don’t want to make huge changes quickly because they won’t be sustainable.” According to Windish, the cardiovascular benefits of weight loss are considerable. “When you return to a healthy weight, your blood pressure decreases, sleep apnea can be reversed, and the effects of hypertension and diabetes can be improved as well,” she notes. “Studies show that just a 10-pound weight reduction can correspond to a significant drop in systolic blood pressure. Basically, by returning to a healthy weight, you can take away many of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease that may limit your life.” She adds that it’s important to be fair with yourself about sticking to a weight reduction plan. “Set a realistic time frame for your goal,” she says. “Say, ‘I want to accomplish X over the next six months or a year,’ and if you fall off the wagon, just get back on again. Don’t worry about health care providers being disappointed in you; they know you’re human and may need to start fresh a couple of times.” It’s best to have a conversation with your doctor about the type of weight loss program that is right for you and your heart, Windish says. For those with a significant number of pounds to shed, surgical intervention may be needed; others can reduce their weight successfully with good nutrition and exercise. “The plan needs to be tailored to the person,” she says. “A consistent exercise regimen and a well-rounded, plant-based diet with lean proteins are a pretty good foundation for most people.”

6 STEPS FOR WEIGHT LOSS SUCCESS An effective weight loss plan for better heart health depends on good nutrition, regular exercise and a positive mindset. Here are six guidelines to help ensure positive results. »

Make sure you’re ready.

Ask yourself if you are capable of changing your eating and activity habits for good. » Find your inner motivation. Examine your goals for weight loss, and make a list of the reasons that are most important to you.

Set realistic goals. It’s sensible to aim for 1 to 2 pounds of weight loss per week over the long term by combining a healthy diet and regular exercise. In general, you need to burn 500 to 1,000 more calories than you consume each day. »

Enjoy healthier foods. Learn to love nutritious, plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Variety will help you stick to your plan without giving up flavor. »

Get active and stay active.

It may be possible to lose weight without exercise, but your healthiest bet is to combine regular physical activity with a healthful diet. Any extra movement can help you combat calories. »

windows in your home that bring in the maximum amount of light. In addition to the unparalleled beauty of natural light, glass windows and doors also can be impactful design elements in every room. Here are some of my favorites.

Consider forgoing upper cabinets and take narrow windows from counter to crown on an exterior kitchen or bar wall.

Whenever possible, create a line of sight from the front to the back of your house upon entry.

If you’re in need of space and natural light, extending a room with a bay window is a fairly simple renovation with maximum rewards.

A British conservatory is a perfect way to get some natural light all year long and keep your plants alive over the winter.

Maximize the height of your glass windows and doors whenever possible. It is high drama and adds light.

This photo really demonstrates the amount of light (and space) you can add just by adding a dormer to a second-floor space.

Add a skylight to enjoy a connection with nature while you shower.

Roofing that area of your facade is a challenge. It also is an opportunity to upgrade the overall composition of your property by giving the front door the starring role rather than its current forgettable performance. By adding a new gable element above the door, we can draw the eye to this corner of the facade. A pair of square columns and a circular window provide interesting details and cast some nice shadows. Next, we can build a new wooden fence with corner light piers that turns the existing recessed area into a charming entry court. This and some revised plantings further help draw one’s eyes to the entrance. The entry walk from the driveway is edged with new low, continuous shrubs and grasses, as is the right side of the home. The shutters have been widened and painted sage green like the front door to give a little accent. Now, you’ll look good come rain or shine. Thanks for asking, —HOMEWORK
