Our Vision The Junior League of Detroit envisions collaborating in a community where residents of all ages and backgrounds share a safe, wholesome environment with strong educational, recreational, cultural, and health resources.

Our Focus The Junior League of Detroit focuses on elevating the lives of children. Through our projects and programs, using our financial resources and trained volunteers, we will initiate and participate in community-based collaborative partnerships that work to broaden the educational, cultural, recreational, and health opportunities for children in the City of Detroit.

Junior League of Detroit

O

n behalf of the Junior League of Detroit, I am honored to present our 21st Designers’ Show House. The Junior League of Detroit is a non-profit women’s volunteer organization strongly committed to elevating the lives of children and families in the City of Detroit. For the past 102 years, our members have been catalysts for change in the community. Through the unique combination of our fundraising efforts and trained volunteers, the Junior League is proud to have initiated and participated in collaborative partnerships addressing the issues of education, nutrition and recreational opportunities for children in Detroit. Our hope is to leave an everlasting impact on the city in which we live, work and do business. The Designers’ Show House is the single largest fundraiser for our organization. Since its inception in 1976, the Show House has enabled the Junior League to raise over $4 million to support our community projects. Our past projects include the establishment of a safe Lunchroom for Working Women, the Pediatric Mobile Team partnership with Children’s Hospital of Michigan, the Police Athletic League Tutorial Program, Cornerstone Schools, and renovations to Orchestra Hall, Belle Isle and the Monteith Branch of the Detroit Public Library. We could not have accomplished this without your generous support along with that of our patrons and corporate sponsors. The awe inspiring transformation of this home into the 2016 Designers’ Show House is the result of the tireless effort of many talented designers, gifted craftsmen and Junior League volunteers under the wonderful leadership of Designers’ Show House Co-Chairs: Ann Baxter and Sabine Iafrate. Proceeds from this Designers’ Show House will support the Junior League’s health and nutrition initiative, Project EAT. The objective of Project EAT is to provide Education, Access, and Tools to support healthy eating options for children and families in the Detroit community. We are committed to making an impact and will continue this year to devote innumerable volunteer hours in doing so. We invite you to learn more about the Junior League by visiting www.jldetroit.org. Thank you for attending. Your support enables the Junior League to fulfill its mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and most of all, improving our community through effective action and leadership. I hope you enjoy your visit to 15500 Windmill Pointe Drive.

Welcome from the Chairmen W

e are pleased to welcome you to the 2016 Designers’

Show House, a beautiful English Tudor-styled home built in 1927 for American aircraft designer and VP of Engineering at Packard Motor Car Company, Colonel Jesse G. Vincent. This spectacular home has undergone incredible reconstruction over the

Sabine Iafrate and Ann Brady Baxter

last 18 months to bring it back to its

original splendor. On the inside, the original wood floors, wood paneling and even the kitchen cabinets and original Kelvinator refrigerators have been refurbished. On the outside, the very unique canal which runs from Lake St. Clair to a dry dock under the living room has been rebuilt; a fountain with a copper elephant’s head and another fountain with cascading ponds have been restored. The breathtaking location on Lake St. Clair and the unique craftsmanship of this home have inspired our talented designers, landscapers and artists as they each reveal their originality and skills in the fabulous spaces they created. We wish to thank our returning partners and those new to our Show House, along with all the tradesmen who helped them. We gratefully appreciate their kindness, patience, dedication and generosity in creating the beautiful rooms and gardens of this home. We are amazed by their talent and are forever grateful for their support of the Designers’ Show House. This truly could not happen without them! We extend special gratitude to the generous homeowners who have entrusted us with their home and supported this endeavor in many ways. We also wish to thank this year’s Corporate and Individual Sponsors and supporters for their generosity; as well as our devoted Steering Committee, all members of the Junior League of Detroit, our families and friends. We sincerely appreciate the kindness and support of the neighbors as well as the Mayor, City Manager, Council and Public Safety Director of the City of Grosse Pointe Park. We hope you enjoy visiting this Designers’ Show House and sincerely thank you for being here. Please know that your support helps us continue our mission of elevating the lives of children in the Detroit community. Thank you,

Century of Service

CELEBRATING

More than one S

ince its inception in 1914, the Junior League of Detroit has made its mark on the city of Detroit’s people and culture. For more than one hundred years, JLD members have committed themselves to identifying challenges, developing strategies, and pro-actively putting solutions into place that make change happen. They have responded to a changing and dynamic city throughout the decades and have answered the many needs of its people. The Designers’ Show House is a major part of this process, raising the necessary dollars that allows the JLD to make an impact on the community. Thank you for supporting the JLD and join us as we prepare for another one hundred years of service.

The

Beginning

Detroit in 1914 was booming. Ford Motor Company’s assembly line and the announcement of a $5, 8-hour day were revolutionary and a looming World War I created a new awareness of the importance of women in the workforce and society. Just a few years later, in 1919, women would earn the right to vote. It was into this exciting and turbulent time that the Junior League of Detroit was born. Fortyseven women joined forces in 1914 to found the JLD, led by our first president, Mrs. Paul Weadock. The JLD’s first project reflected the changing times for Detroit’s working women.

100 YEARS OF SERVICE

Ø 1978: Secured the Apollo Command Module Emergency Egress Trainer for the Detroit Science Center, on permanent loan from the Smithsonian Ø 1982: Partnered on the Hospice Awareness Project, including the award winning video “Hospice: A Shared Experience” Ø 1989: Developed a Parent Training Program and published a Parenting Skills Manual in support of the Focus Hope Center for Children

JLD Braille Training 1929 questions. There have been many highlights throughout the past 100 plus years, including: Ø 1922: Founded the Detroit League for the Handicapped – now called Adult Well-Being Services Ø 1930: Opened the Training Cottage for the Blind in partnership with Helen Keller Ø 1948: Established Pioneer House, a home for emotionally disturbed children Ø 1964: Opened the Poison Control Project in partnership with the Detroit Children’s Hospital. The project received the National Safety Council’s highest award in 1965

In 1915, the JLD established a lunchroom for working girls on Woodward Avenue between John R and Grand Circus Park. The lunchroom provided nutritious and economical meals as well as a place where working women could relax, talk and be secure. Lunch cost 6 cents.

Ø 1971: Developed Operation LINC (Linking Individuals to Needs in the Community), with the purpose of linking inner-city groups in need of help with organizations that could provide assistance. In 1978, LINC became a successful and independent agency

Since that first project, JLD members have always strived to identify areas and communities with under served needs and to match their skills and energies with projects and programs that can fill those needs and answer the unanswered

Ø 1977-1981: Assisted and funded several significant projects on Belle Isle, including the opening of the Nature Center, the Belle Isle Playscape, and the construction of a sensory nature trail

Junior League of Detroit

Ø 1994: Established a Pediatric Mobile Team with Children’s Hospital of Michigan Since the mid-1990s, the JLD has chosen to dedicate its financial and volunteer resources to specifically focus on the children of Detroit and their families. Projects following that refocus included sponsoring and mentoring a classroom of children at Cornerstone Schools and the establishment of the new Learning Center at the Monteith Branch of the Detroit Public Library. In the past several years, the JLD’s membership has concentrated their efforts on the basic needs of Detroit’s children and their families, with a special emphasis on nutrition and health. Project EAT provides and supports healthy eating opportunities for the children of Detroit and their families.

Are you looking for an opportunity to make a difference in your community? Do you want to work with a diverse group of women leaders? Are you interested in building life long friendships while giving back? Do you want to be part of a historic organization that is continuing to build its legacy into the future? Then you should consider joining the Junior League of Detroit!

Food is the most basic of basic needs. By itself, it can’t solve the problems of hunger, obesity, or malnutrition. People need to have tools, equipment, and knowledge in order to turn food into nourishment and sustenance. Schools no longer teach the living arts which used to be called “Home Economics” and yet, these are sorely needed by people burdened by poverty, homelessness, food insecurity, and illiteracy.

Prospective members must have legal residence in Detroit or within a radius of 25 miles thereof and must be at least 21 years of age. Membership applications and requirements can be found at jldetroit.org or by emailing membership@jldetroit.org. Join us as we roll up our sleeves and get to work on the next 100 years of affecting change in the great City of Detroit. We can’t wait to meet you!

Not only does he have a fine eye, but the process of working with him is great fun. He spends his clients’ money wisely. Rick was comfortable using furnishings and antiques I already owned and listened to my preferences. He knew when to economize and when to splurge. I so enjoyed working with Rick that we undertook several projects together. They all still look great and remain timeless” Suzy Farbman

History of the House

THE STORY OF COLONEL JESSE G. VINCENT and the HOME ON WINDMILL POINTE DRIVE

B

orn in 1880 in Charleston, Arkansas, Jesse Gurney Vincent spent his childhood on a farm near Pana, Illinois. Always a tinkerer, he set up his own blacksmith shop at the age of 10 and could be found hanging around railroad repair shops. He attended the Little Red School House for early grades and then was sent to Cote Brillint Grammar School in St. Louis, Missouri. He quit school in 8th grade and started taking correspondence courses, through which he received his degree in engineering. In 1897, at the age of 17, he took a job as a bookkeeper and then became a toolmaker and machinist for the next 3 years with the Universal Adding Machine Company in St. Louis. In 1902, he met and married Clarinda Brood. Not long after, they moved to Detroit where Vincent took a job with Burroughs Adding Machine Co. Alvan Macauley, then the head of Burroughs, made him Superintendent of Inventions where he stayed until 1910. He then joined the Hudson Motor Car Company and became its Chief Engineer in 1911. Macauley, his former boss at Burroughs, joined the Packard Motor Car Co., and in 1912, he called Vincent to join him. In 1915, Vincent was elevated to Packard VP of Engineering, a post he held until 1948 with the exception of the two years spent in the U.S. Air Service. He retired as a Packard Director in 1954.

all their past research and technical knowledge, co-designed the Liberty Engine. The 400-horsepower V-12 was one of the most powerful engines at that time. Designed to be mass-produced, and with interchangeable parts, it became the standard wartime aircraft engine. Produced by Packard, Ford, Lincoln, GM and others, more than 13,000 came off the assembly line before Armistice, and more than 20,000 were built the following year. Used in numerous types of planes, some engines were released to the civilians market as war surplus and many were used in speedboats for rum-running during Prohibition. The Liberty engine was eventually modified into air-cooled and supercharged versions for marine use. In 1919, while serving in the Army Reserves, Vincent was promoted to Lt Colonel, achieving the rank of Colonel in 1920.

With the U.S. entry into WWI, Vincent accepted a commission as Major with the Signal Corps in the U.S. Army in 1917, and started to build experimental aircraft. He was placed in command of McCook Field in 1918, and became reserve Military Aviation head in August of that year. He was designated Chief of Airplane Engineering in September. Over a 6-day period in Washington, DC, Vincent and Major E. G. Hall, of Hall-Scott Motor Company, using

In 1921, the Vincents lived near the Packard Plant at 528 E. Grand Blvd in Detroit. A few years later, they moved into a home designed by Leonard Willeke at 938 Balfour in Grosse Pointe Park. In 1927, they commissioned architects Benjamin and Straight to design 15500 Windmill Pointe Drive, moving in the next year.

Accomplishments

Col. Vincent was responsible for the introduction of 4-wheeled brakes; automobile air conditioning, power booster brakes and the Packard Twin-Six and its automatic transmission, called Ultramatic. Vincent’s engines established more than 150 racing records in autos, speedboats and airplanes. In 1925 at Manhasset Bay, Vincent set a world powerboat record averaging 49 mph. Later that year, he won the 3rd Annual 150-mile Sweepstakes in the Annual Detroit Regatta at the wheel of PackardChrisCraft II, averaging 55.6 mph, beating Gar Wood for the Gold Cup trophy. In future collaborations with Gar Wood, his marine engines made a sweep of the Gold Cup races, repeatedly carrying his “Miss America” boats to victory.

Other

Accomplishments

In 1929, Colonel Jesse Vincent was given an honorary Master of Engineering from the University of Michigan, “…in recognition of his engineering contributions to the development of the automotive industry and for the conspicuous service he rendered his country during the turmoil of war as co-designer of the famous Liberty engine and chief engineer of the Bureau of Aircraft Production.” He was a member of the Aviation Country Club, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Institute of Automobile Engineers and the Aero Club of America. He served as President of the Society of Automotive Engineers in 1920 and of AAA Michigan in 1948-49. Vincent is immortalized as “America’s Master Motor Builder” on a State of Michigan marker at the Packard Proving Grounds. Colonel Jesse Vincent died on April 20, 1962, at the age of 82. According to an obituary, written by Ralph R. Watts, a reporter for the Detroit News, Vincent was a “...quiet and modest man, who had more than 400 engineering patents to his credit while Junior League of Detroit

The Vincent home is fairly modest in scale at just under 5,300 square feet. With both Tudor and Craftsman influences, details include herringbone brick work and heavy timbers, along with a conical-roofed turret over the entry porch on the exterior; leaded glass windows and doors, and extensive use of wood paneling and ceiling beams on the inside. The home was built to be comfortable enough for two people but grand enough to entertain dignitaries. Besides the imposing two-story living room with the original iron chandelier, carved stone fireplace and the Juliet balcony accessible from the master suite, there is a ballroom on the 3rd floor, allowing for large gatherings of friends and neighbors. But the most unique feature of this waterfront home is the private canal bisecting the yard from Lake St. Clair to the dry dock that runs under the living room. Allowing for Colonel Vincent to work on his boats and motors at his leisure, there is also a full bath and fully equipped Tavern just inside the home from the dock, so he could clean up and relax afterwards. Sixteen years after moving in, Mrs. Vincent passed away and Col. Vincent put the house up for sale. It was sold in 1950 and he moved to a new home less than a mile from the Windmill Pointe address. It was sold twice more, to families with children who lived in the home, enjoyed its uniqueness and shared many happy memories of a home built for an engineer and his wife. About the Designer Bridget Sullivan is an artist known for designing and creating one-of-a-kind garments out of eco-friendly and re-purposed vintage material. After graduating from the College for Creative Studies, she moved to New York City where she interned at Diane von Furstenberg before returning to Detroit. Her company, Bridget Sullivan Designs, LLC, offers beautiful dresses and accessories for dancing, singing, performing and any joyful life events. To us, modern design is three things; an understanding of the past, a curiosity for the latest technology, and a conscious effort to conserve and respect our environment. Our signature material to work with is organic kozo, a natural fiber used to create sculptural elements for our pieces. We blend this raw material with retailored, draped, and corsetted vintage fabric to create romantic silhouettes. Recent corporate collaborations have incorporated 3D printing as well. Bridget's designs have been worn all over the world by performers including Grammy Award winning musician Esperanza Spalding, and can currently be seen nationally on a Quicken Loans TV Commercial.

ABOUT THE GARDEN

ABOUT THE COMPANY

An elegant row of box woods and taxus lines the outside wall of the courtyard. The front facade of the house is mirrored by the same combination underneath the living room windows, enhanced by a colorful display of annuals. A Kousa dogwood on the south corner and a Rose of Sharon on the north corner gives a very formal, stately appearance.

Greater Detroit Landscape Company, family operated for 40 years, began as a lawn and garden service in 1932. Today, the company has expanded to include a full service landscape architectural design/build firm. Much of the success of Greater Detroit can be attributed to the attention to detail and their hands on approach to the design and installation process. The design principals, Bill and Matt Whetstone, seasoned landscape architects are the inspiration behind the design while having field experience to ensure a successful landscape installation. Both enthusiastically implement the customers vision while achieving a well balanced design.

The Canal Garden ALLEMON'S LANDSCAPE CENTER 17727 Mack Avenue, Detroit 313.882.9085 allemons.com

ABOUT THE GARDEN

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Allemon’s Landscape Center and our very own Junior League members teamed up to beautify the long border along the canal. Large bronze-colored containers were filled by some of our talented members utilizing a collection of flowers, succulents, colorful plants, herbs, branches and dry foliage, and even vegetables to create unique and magnificent arrangements. These flower pots are offered for sale. Arbor vitae were planted in the background to set off the containers and create a natural border between the lawn area and the canal.

Allemon’s Landscape Center’s tradition of customer service and care is rooted in 80 years (three generations) of accumulated knowledge and long-term commitment to customer satisfaction. The 4 Allemon generations started out selling the ‘earth’, then moved to selling just about everything on earth for gardeners (people who like to dig in the earth!). The family combined that broad variety of quality landscape-related products with a down-to-earth friendly approach to gardening questions of every sort. Our goal is to extend this to our customers.

ABOUT THE COMPANY Although Debbie Rossman is new to the tiny house industry, each phase of her life has contributed to creating small affordable homes in the Detroit Community. When she was fourteen, she dreamt of creating cabins for women who needed a safe and small environment for raising their children. Her interest in building continued as she and her husband fixed and remodeled their own homes. In 2011 during

the housing crisis, she made her dream a reality by taking an eightweek course at Build Institute as well as attending small business workshops and conferences. Debbie feels the tiny house lifestyle was not just for her, but also a blessing for so many others who struggle daily to live in a traditional-size home.

ABOUT THE TINY HOUSE Originally the boat house, 1927 Vincent, otherwise known as "The

Kids in the Kitchen and Forgotten Harvest

Forgotten Harvest works to relieve hunger in our area and reduce waste of nutritious foods. They have been instrumental in educating League members on food issues that are impacting our area and helping us to affect positive change. We have partnered with Forgotten Harvest on a project for the Designers' Show House this year which will showcase the use of small-space gardening to grow your own nutritious food. With the help of our own Master Gardner, the kids will be planting an EDIBLE GARDEN which will include spinach, lettuce, and radishes in trays for the DSH and a pot for themselves that they can take home. They will learn that with just a few seeds, sunshine and water, they can feed themselves a healthy, inexpensive meal. When the DSH is over, we will be returning all of the plants to the kids for planting in their community garden.

Junior Leagues’ nation-wide initiative, Kids in the Kitchen, promotes good nutrition by involving kids with hands-on events in the kitchen. The focus is on reading labels to identify healthy ingredients, and preparing healthy, budget friendly meals. Locally, the Junior League of Detroit has established vital partnerships with Cass Community Social Services and Forgotten Harvest. Cass Community Social Services is a Detroit based agency that provides food and shelter to those in need. Kids in the Kitchen has initiated two events at Cass Community utilizing their new kitchen facilities. Our first event included a local chef who taught the kids kitchen safety, how to butcher a chicken, make cornbread from scratch, and how to read labels and identify healthy/unhealthy ingredients. We also made healthy brown-bag lunches and inexpensive, edible holiday gifts.
