IN MEMORIAM FOUNDER AND FIRST PRESIDENT DR. BERNARD LANDER Dr. Bernard Lander was a brilliant, inspirational leader and visionary who revolutionized the field of education. As an educator and preeminent scholar, he devoted his life to Jewish and general higher education. Dr. Lander founded Touro College in 1970 and served as its first president until his passing in February 2010. Under his leadership, Touro grew significantly into an institution with multiple campuses and international reach. Today, Touro educates nearly 19,000 students across the United States and around the world. Dr. Lander’s creative genius and original thinking continue to be reflected in Touro’s innovative approach to higher education. He believed that it was his mission to strengthen Jewish continuity and provide opportunities for individuals from all walks of life to achieve academic advancement and career success. During the administration of former New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, Dr. Lander was named associate director of the Committee on Unity, a precursor to the city’s Commission on Human Rights, and was recognized as an authority on human rights. He served for more than 30 years as vice president of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations, where he emerged as a

TOURO UNIVERSITY Over the past 50 years, Touro University has gone from strength to strength. Established in 1970 to focus on higher education for the Jewish community and to serve humanity, Touro has grown to serve a widely diverse population of nearly 19,000 students across 36 schools in four countries. Touro’s significant achievements and advanced academic standing have led to our recently awarded university status. At the same time, Touro is emerging as a powerhouse in healthcare education—with close to 8,000 students pursuing degrees in medicine, dentistry and allied health fields. Touro’s remarkable expansion continues. We have recently added Lovelace, a biomedical research institute in New Mexico, that will greatly expand our research capabilities. Touro opened a new college of osteopathic medicine in Montana, in addition to our existing five medical schools in New York, Nevada and California. This school will provide new doctors to rural and Native communities throughout a state facing a healthcare crisis. schools, including the pharmacy school and the graduate schools for social work, education, technology and Jewish studies, as well as the occupational and physical therapy programs. OUR MISSION Touro University is an independent institution of higher education under Jewish auspices, established to promote and perpetuate the Jewish heritage, as well as to serve the general community in keeping with the historic Jewish commitment to intellectual inquiry, the transmission of knowledge, social justice and service to society. The Lander Colleges partner with New York Medical College (NYMC) to create the Medical Honors Pathway, which offers the opportunity for qualified applicants to continue their studies at NYMC after completing their undergraduate education. In collaboration with Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM), Touro College of Pharamcy (TCOP) and Touro’s School of Health Sciences (SHS), the Lander Colleges introduced the Integrated Honors Tracks for students who have decided on careers as doctors of osteopathic medicine, pharmacists, physician assistants, occupational therapists, physical therapists or speech-language pathologists.

Since 1972, when Touro’s School of Health Sciences pioneered the training of physician assistants, SHS has grown into a healthcare powerhouse, educating clinicians in nine different areas of the health sciences—from physical therapy to occupational therapy, physician assistant studies and nursing to speech-language pathology, mental health and graduate programs in the behavioral sciences. SHS’s newest program is the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology with a health emphasis, designed to prepare students to work as psychologists in traditional mental health settings, in private practice, as well as in an increasingly integrated healthcare system with medical patients, and in collaboration with a variety of healthcare providers. Faculty members provide students with intensive interaction and hands-on training, so they are equipped with the knowledge and skills they’ll need on the job. TCOP is providing students with a competitive edge through exciting new courses, esteemed faculty and a unique curriculum offering a combination of classroom and clinical experience rare among pharmacy schools. By experiencing nine pharmacy rotations, ~54 weeks, students have more opportunity to practice what they learn. Students may obtain meaningful elective rotations at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Indian Health Service (IHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
