Neck Lift

NECK CONTOUR IS INFLUENCED BY HEREDITY AND AGING.

Anatomically, three layers are important to neck contour: skin, fat, and muscle. Further, there are two separate fat compartments in the neck, one above the muscle and one below the muscle.

THE FAT COMPARTMENT ON TOP OF THE MUSCLE MAY BE ADDRESSED NON-SURGICALLY,

but the compartment underneath the muscle requires surgery for removal. Kybella® or in-o ce liposuction are easy ways to address the fat compartment above the muscle.

MUSCLE BANDS IN THE NECK WITHOUT ASSOCIATED SKIN OR FAT EXCESS MAY BE IMPROVED

with a neuromodulator, such as Botox®, Dysport®, or Xeomin®.

THE NECK LIFT OPERATION ADDRESSES ALL THE LAYERS.

It may be performed alone or with a face li . Extra skin is removed. e muscle is tightened. And fat, both above and below the muscle, is removed. Incisions are discreetly placed around the earlobe, behind the ear, and under the chin. A neck li can yield a dramatic change in the contour. If there are also changes in the face, including development of jowls, a faceli combined with neck li is appropriate. Frequently,

other procedures such as fat gra ing and eyelid surgery are combined with faceli and neck li for total rejuvenation.

THE BIGGEST TECHNOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENT IS THE MEDICATION ARTISS.

It is a brin sealant, or “ brin glue,” which is used to seal up the surgical zone and stick the skin back down to the newly contoured muscle layer. e need for drains or chin straps is minimized or eliminated. Bruising and swelling are signi cantly decreased. erefore recovery time is reduced. With Artiss, we have had many patients return to work in as li le as one week following faceli /neck li which is dramatically faster than with traditional methods.

Consultation with your American Board of Plastic Surgery certi ed surgeon is the best way to determine what procedure is right for you. We welcome the opportunity to discuss your concerns and provide state of the art surgical and non-surgical care.

SUCCESS

SUITS YOU

It may surprise you to know that suiting is a big trend in fashion for Spring/Summer 2023 – and not just for the office! Blazers, tailored layers and “old money” styling are very much en vogue, even for every day wear.

To rock this style while staying current, select solid suiting separates and layer them with colorful accessories. Patterned blouses, interesting belts, elegant jewelry and big ol’ bags are the order of the day. Think timeless-meetstrendsetter; lean on the classics, but push the limits with your trendy accoutrements.

With all due respect to Coco Chanel, in 2023, feel free to ADD one more accessory before you step out the door!

The New Agda:

The NEW Rules of Etiquette for In-Pson Meetings

There’s no denying that the way we do meetings has changed dramatically in the last five years. While the combination of new technology and a new generation of business owners certainly had a hand in that evolution, Covid certainly put a nail in the coffin of our old ways of doing business. That can be a mixed bag; it can be tough to strike the right balance between professional and personable. We have some tips to help your business toe that line with grace!

Set it Up!

Any meeting truly begins the moment you communicate the intent to set a meeting. How you handle coordinating the details sets the tone for the entire experience – and poor communication can reflect poorly on you.

If it’s an intra-office meeting, it’s best to follow established protocols; in the absence of any set method for organizing a meeting, try sending a calendar invite that communicates your proposed date, time, location and purpose.

But if you’re meeting with someone outside your office, things can be more difficult. We recommend sending an initial email (or picking up the phone!) to explain the intent of the meeting and to work out a possible date. Don’t let it become phone tag; propose firm dates and times rather than leaving it open-ended. Follow up with a calendar invite that summarizes any pertinent details. Should you follow up? If a meeting was set more than two weeks prior, feel free to email (or text if your client has okayed that form of communication) the day before, ensuring you’re “still on” for your planned meeting date. That is unless the person you’re meeting with has

March 2023 | TOPS 31
BUSINESS

previously canceled meetings at the last minute; in that case, we fully endorse “checking in” several business hours before any meeting.

Who Shakes?

The rule of thumb (pardon the pun) in a meeting is that the host or higher-ranked person in the room initiates the first handshake. But we find that most people aren’t sticklers for this custom; if everyone is present and no one has made a move to start shaking hands, feel free to jump in. If you are seated when they enter the room, stand to initiate the introduction and handshake.

One major caveat? If someone is wearing a face mask, take the lack of handshakes as a sign that the people present aren’t comfortable with doing so.

Introduce Yourself!

Introduce yourself with your full name and title. If you are part of a team, let the highest-ranking member of the team introduce themselves first. If that’s you, feel free to introduce the other team members, especially if they’re “behind the scenes” types.

Generally, it would be best to allow the people you are meeting to introduce themselves. One exception would be if there are any late arrivals – in that case, feel free to make introductions if no one else immediately steps up.

Blded Meetings

It’s common for meetings today to include both in-person and virtual participants. It’s important that you make your virtual attendees feel seen and heard. Periodically address the virtual attendees and ask them if they have any questions. This is a weird tip that works: when they’re speaking, occasionally make “eye contact” with the camera lens. From their perspective, this will feel like making actual eye contact with them and will help them feel better heard.

Avoid Gossip

Everyone knows this rule, but almost nobody abides by it. In a casual, conversational meeting, it’s so easy to slip into gossip. And if the juicy details are on a celebrity or newsworthy figure – and the details are mostly HR-okay – it’s probably fine. But what if it’s about a mutual acquaintance or local person?

The simple answer is that avoiding gossip in a professional setting is best. If someone on your team brings gossip to the table, sweep the conversation onto a new topic – and reprimand that team member afterward in private. If the person you’re meeting with brings up the dish, listen and react appropriately, but don’t engage; don’t speculate, and don’t add details.

Gossip ultimately reflects poorly on your business. If you accidentally spread false information, your company becomes a “source” along the rumor mill. You never know what connections those in the room might have to the subject of discussion.

Express Thks

Thank the person or group you are meeting with for their time. If appropriate, send a thank you card as a follow-up. It’s not just the right thing to do; it also helps you stay top of mind!

5 Rules for Virtual Meetings

It’s Still a Meeting!

The most important rule to bear in mind? Even though it’s virtual, you should still treat the meeting as seriously as you might any other professional meeting. Prepare your notes, presentation or pitch beforehand. Be on time, dress professionally (from head to toe) and generally behave as if you were sitting in a boardroom.

Sure this sounds simple enough, but in practice, we’ve all been guilty of playing it a little looseygoosey with virtual meetings. Even if you’re not the host, it’s respectful of everyone’s time to treat these meetings as important.

Check Your Settings

Before the meeting even gets started, ensure everything on your end is up and running without a hitch. We’ve been at this a long time, so any avoidable glitches will reflect negatively on you. What’s merely embarrassing for you is frustrating for everyone else.

The Vocal Hdake

Don’t just jump right in; take a moment to greet all participants warmly. This engages everyone on the call – and gives you a few seconds to sniff out any technical hiccups that might waylay the meeting.

It’s Not a Monologue

Leave pauses for participants to chime in, and stop speaking if you hear someone try to interject a thought. Remember that there will be a natural delay in their feedback, so let a little silence hang after you ask, “Any questions so far?”

End with a Summy

It can be difficult for participants to keep up with all the small details of a virtual meeting. Wrap up the meeting by shooting an email to everyone, outlining your notes from the conversation. Be sure to include action items or a plan for the next steps moving forward. •

As much as we would like it to, vision doesn’t stay 20/20 forever. While some of us visually impaired walk around with glasses our whole lives, others, or the “lucky ones” as I call them, don’t need glasses until later in life. Especially in today’s digital age, we’re squinting, reading, and glancing at screens daily, which can cause wear and tear on our eyes.

If you’ve made it to the stage where you’re experiencing headaches, fuzziness and blurriness, and tired eyes when trying to read, it may be time to invest in the dreaded: reading glasses. But don’t worry, you’re not alone. This is a completely normal part of aging, and more than that, it’s an opportunity to get some stylish frames!

The Basics

When selecting your perfect pair of glasses there are several factors to consider, such as style, color, and fit, but most importantly, strength. The strength of reading glasses refers to the strength the lenses provide, meaning the higher the number on your prescription, the more powerful your glasses are.

Since no two eyes are the same, it’s critical to get glasses with the correct strength for your eyes. Consulting your optometrist for an eye exam is the best route to go, but if you’re itching to get to the store sooner, you can use the trial and error method. When trying on readers, make sure you bring something to read. So you can figure out which strength works best for you. In general, your first pair of reading glasses will have a lower lens power and will increase as you age.

The Fit

When selecting reading glasses it’s also important to consider your face shape, so you can feel confident wearing them whenever, wherever! With the right style and fit, your glasses will quickly become your new favorite fashionable accessory.

BIZ STYLE
ROUND SQUARE OVAL HEART

round face

Contrast the soft features of a round face with strong angular frames, such as rectangle, retro square, or browline shapes. These types of frames will add dimension to a round face, while round styles can add extra width to the face. When shopping for frames, look for lenses that are wider than they are deep.

square face

Square faces are defined by boxy features like a strong, rectangular jawline. Soften these features with an oval or round frame, or even cat eye style frame in some instances. Rimless frames can also help soften sharp features, but stay away from square and rectangular frames as they can accentuate those sharp features.

oval face

If you have an oval face and need glasses, you’re in luck. Almost any type of frame looks good on an oval face, just take your pick! Although you have your choice of round, rectangle, or whatever your heart desires, keep proportions in mind. A petite face will work well with half frame or rimless readers, while a longer face can sport full frame glasses.

Trending in Blue Light

With screens every way we turn, blue light could be putting strain on your eyes and seriously affecting your sleep patterns. Though there are a few ways to protect yourself from blue light, like avoiding bright screens 2 to 3 hours before bed, we know you’re probably not going to stop scrolling on your phone until it’s time to snooze. Luckily, many glasses are now being made with blue light lenses that can help filter blue light when you’re looking at a screen, reducing eye exposure and strain. You may not realize it, but eye strain can cause headaches, dry eyes, fatigued facial muscles, and more. So, next time you’re picking out a pair of reading glasses, try out blue light blockers and see what a difference it makes.

heart shaped face

A heart shaped face is fairly distinguishable, with a sharp jawline and narrow chin. Since these types of faces are typically widest at the forehead, upswept styles like cat eye, retro square, and rectangular frames compliment this shape well. The trick for heart shaped faces is to find shapes that balance out the varying widths of their face.

let's do lunch!

In the business world, big things can happen over lunch. But in order to seal the deal, you first have to select the right setting. The perfect eatery for a business meeting should have three things: a broad menu, ambiance conducive to your business and a vibe that fits both you and your client. You want a menu with a lot of options to accommodate the tastes and dietary needs of your client or guests. Good ambiance for business includes a reasonable volume level, limited interruptions, seating that allows you to converse and spacious surfaces for any materials you may need to present. And the vibe? That’s a judgement call for you to make. If your client is on the stuffy side, a more reserved lunch spot would be appropriate. If they’re casual, fun-loving and free-spirited, go more casual. An upscale meal may impress some clients and alienate others. It’s a delicate balance. Need some local suggestions? We can help!

Whether you have a strong sense of personal style and know exactly what you want, or need a little help putting the pieces together, you are bound to find something you love at Olive You.

“Every day is fun at Olive You!” the sisters said. “We love helping people step outside of their comfort zones and stay up to date on current trends. Reflecting on the challenges of carrying an inventory of 100+ brands, hosting store events, and, juggling kids at home, the sisters thank their hardworking parents for the lessons they’ve learned and credit the Olive You team for much of the business’s success.

“Our staff is the backbone of our store,” they said. “We’ve been so blessed with wonderful employees. We think of them as family and adore them all dearly.”

EL RANCHO TAPATIO

LEADER IN :

Authentic Mexican Cuisine

El Rancho Tapatio is a family-owned and operated restaurant offering delicious, freshly made food. Founded in 2009, the restaurant started as three small tables and has expanded into its Burt Road home. The Rios family, who operate the restaurant, are from Guadalajara, Mexico. In Spanish, el Tapatio is an informal term for someone from Guadalajara. The family opened a second restaurant last year, Mama Tequila, a modern-eclectic restaurant in Downtown Lexington offering the same great food and drinks as their flagship.

Diners at Mama Tequila can also enjoy live music, DJs, karaoke and dancing after dinner as the restaurant transforms into an entertainment venue in the evening. El Rancho Tapatio attracts live music fans, too, with bands several days per week. In the summer, guests can relax on the floral-filled patio!

Their authentic menu is described as “Not your everyday Mexican cuisine,” and for good reason.

Their culinary team of more than 75 cooks specializes in Taqueria style tacos, and other favorites like Sopes, Gorditas, Empanadas, Ceviche, Tortas Ahogadas, Carnes en su Jugo, and Menudo. Diners will enjoy inspired dishes, hand-crafted cocktails, Mexican beers and more at both locations. An array of authentic Mexican dishes will transport them to a little corner of Guadalajara with each bite. 859-373-9091

CARSON’S FOOD & DRINK

LEADER IN :

American Casual Dining

“I’ve thought about this a lot: What sets us apart?” reflected Mark Fichtner, the owner of Carson’s Food & Drink.

It’s clear that Carson’s stands out in Lexington’s culinary scene as a favorite among locals and visitors alike, but what has been its secret recipe for such success? Fichtner has concluded that it’s been his team’s ability to evolve and continuously meet the needs of diners.

“I think it’s our adaptability,” he said. “There is comfort in refusing to move the needle on who you are, but being not only willing but eager to adapt to the market you’re in often leads to greater and greater success. It’s our willingness to adapt — adapting to the guests and the ever-changing restaurant ecosystem — that has kept us where we are, has elevated us to new heights and has so humbled our outlook on who we are.”

That ability to evolve has been central in Carson’s resilience in withstanding the impact of COVID-19 and emerging from the other side better than ever, and it has served the business well throughout many other new and unforeseen challenges. But throughout those changes, Carson’s has always stuck to some foundational principles for guidance, represented by a special memento ingrained in the restaurant itself.

“Two feet below our main entrance is my family’s Bible,” explained Fichtner. “It was passed down from generation to generation and I wanted to immortalize that book and the memories and lessons it has shared with my family. I am reminded every day when I enter this building what the foundation is built on, literally, and with God’s strength, we will continue to succeed and prosper.”

Fichtner’s leadership is very much guided by that family legacy — he names his mother and childhood pastor as his biggest role models for the lesson they passed to him that he could be anything he wanted to be and do anything he wanted to do provided he was willing to work for it. That outlook has culminated in his role today, a job he calls the “greatest in the world.”

“Carson’s has become a staple of the restaurant scene in Lexington,” he said. “We serve great food and drinks, but it is our employees and their service that sets us apart. Starting the restaurant was the hard part, but now with my team in place, I am able to guide Carson’s onto bigger and better things.”

BENJAMIN DEATON HOME

Curated Gifts for the Home

Benjamin Deaton Home is known for offering exclusive lines that can’t be found anywhere else in Lexington, including Bunny Williams Home, Christopher Spitzmiller, George Smith and Chaddock Furniture. And the business’s namesake, Owner Benjamin Deaton, understands that customers will always want the chance to see these unique offerings in person.

“The one thing that will continue is people wanting to see, touch and feel,” he said. “While we have a robust online business that ships out all over the country, people still like to come into the showroom to see things in person. I think we will continue to see growth from that.”

And while offering unique finds, custom upholstery and the types of home goods that elevate dwellings has brought Deaton success, he notes that attempting to reach different markets by diluting those offerings would be a mistake. Instead, the sister business, Benjamin Deaton Interior Design, helps customers who want even more specialized services and customized attention for their homes.

Maintaining the showroom isn’t just the best way to offer customers specialized goods and services. It gives Deaton and his team the chance to enjoy his favorite thing about Lexington: the people.

“Everyone who comes into our store is so nice and I have met so many wonderful people that I probably never would have if I didn’t open up the showroom,” Deaton concluded.

JEFF RUBY’S STEAKHOUSE Fine Dining Experience

In 1981, soon after opening his first restaurant, ‘The Precinct’, Jeff Ruby realized that guests didn’t patronize the place simply because they were hungry. Ruby explains, “They could’ve just gone to their refrigerators if they were hungry. They were coming to my place to celebrate life and I was going to give them a total culinary and entertainment experience unlike any other so they could do just that. More than four decades later, we strive to do the exact same thing every night.”

Now, after 4 successful years, Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse in downtown Lexington has established itself as a hometown icon and can’t-miss destination for visitors. Lexingtonians and travelers from around the world relish “The Jeff Ruby Experience” which Ruby describes as “a unique combination of elements like ambiance, culinary expertise, decor, music, hospitality, rhythm and flow, sense of arrival, service and so much more.” This experience has drawn national attention. According to their website, Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse has garnered awards such as OpenTable’s Top 100 Steakhouses in America; Travel + Leisure’s Top American Steakhouses; and USA Today’s Best American Steakhouses, among many others.

Ruby credits the origin of his success to his high school football coach and mentor, Jeep Bednarik, who took an interest in him after Ruby fled from a troubled home and became self-sufficient at the age of 15. Ruby says, “He taught me the value of striving to become a better person, hard work and more. I wanted to make him proud. As a result of his mentorship, I went from failing grades to straig A’s. From not winning a wrestling match my sophmore year to not losing one my senior year. From riding the bench to All-State football honors and a scholarship to Cornell University. He is one of the single greatest influences I’ve had in my life.”

Ruby has spent much of his adult life passing along what is now his own positive influence down through his employees to his guests. According to Ruby, “In the restaurant business, everything is important, but perhaps nothing more so than making our guets feel really important. The only way to make that happen is to make our employees our most important thing. If we offer them extraordinary opportunities, they make an emotional connection with the guests they serve. I would’ve never been successful if my employees didn’t want me to be.”

Ruby also gives back through The Jeff Ruby Foundation, which aims to alleviate childhood poverty by first addressing challenges faced by the most vulnerable population in our community - those without parents as well as those in the current foster care system.

Luxury Real Estate

There are many reasons why Suzanne Elliott is regarded by her clients and colleagues as an industry leader. She was Berkshire Hathaway de Movellan Properties’ No. 1 Top Producer in 2022, the 24th time she earned that honor in her 37-year career. During that period she sold over $500 million in real estate.

But the best proof of Suzanne’s leadership role is her election as Realtor of the Year in 2021. She received this award not only because of her success as a real estate agent but due to her commitment to the community. “My husband, Jim, and I feel that being involved in and giving back to the community are a priority for us.”

The key to all this success? Suzanne will tell you that she strives to listen very carefully to her clients. “Communication is everything”, she says. According to her clients, Suzanne has a strong work ethic, a caring demeanor, and an unrelenting positive attitude that makes working with her a satisfying and successful experience.

Another key to Suzanne’s long legacy of success is her love of the Bluegrass area. “The future of real estate here is bright”, she contends. “Because it is simply a wonderful place to live and work. Central Kentucky has so much to offer, whether you enjoy horse racing, the arts, beautiful scenery, upscale restaurants, sports, shopping, or exploring the many bourbon distilleries.”

With so much passion for real estate and her community, it is little wonder that Suzanne Elliott is a leader in her field.

“When Raleigh Bruner founded Wildcat Moving in 2010, he was determined to recruit and retain the best and the brightest movers to build the foundation of his small business. As Wildcat grew into the top-ranked moving company in Kentucky, ambitious movers expressed interest in starting their own moving businesses. After recognizing the budding initiative of these driven individuals, Raleigh developed the ‘Mover to Manager to Partner’ program to train movers in the best practices on how to open and operate their own world-class moving company.

This pioneering training program has spawned 31 locations in 14 states over the last decade creating over 1000 current jobs – from Ft. Myers, Florida to Reno, Nevada – each built using Wildcat’s successful business model. Many of these companies are award-winning and considered the best in their respective markets. As his enterprise expanded, Raleigh seized the opportunity and opened Wildcat Van Lines – an interstate trucking company that connects the network. Also owned and managed by former movers, Wildcat Van Lines offers a three-party relocation service that moves customers across the lower 48. Raleigh credits his impressive team for the continued success and growth of his businesses. “I am proud to have given entrepreneurial opportunities to so many deserving young men.”

“The client is the star of the show — we are there to guide, advise, support and solve their problems,” McCallie explained. “We want a long-term relationship with our clients, it’s not just a transaction and a commission. We want to be a resource for our clients, before, during and well after the transaction.”

“The best lesson I have learned is to define exactly who you are, and who you want to serve, and then strive to be the very best at that, rather than trying to be everything to everybody,” Adams explained. “In doing so, you are better able to perfect your systems and processes, making the entire experience better for both the customer, as well as the team members who are in the field actually doing the job.”

Adams finds motivation in the chance to serve his customers and his communityas a descendent of the Hatfield family, he has deep ties to the region and is proud to help his fellow Kentuckians maintain their own homes.

“Most people take pride in their homes, and have a strong desire to make sure that they stay dry, look great, and meet the needs of their family,” he said. “For this reason, there will always be a need for quality-minded roofing contractors who can solve homeowners’ issues quickly, and at a fair price.”

GREEN GABLES WINDOWS & DOORS

Residential Doors

Founded in 2018, Green Gables

Windows & Doors is not actually named after “Anne Of Green Gables,” as many might believe. Rather, it takes its name from owner and operator Landon Howe’s favorite color as well as the gable peaks that are common with his favorite styles of architecture.

“After writing down roughly 50 potential business names, ‘Green Gables’ immediately jumped off the page,” Howe recalled.

Clearly, the name has served Howe well, as his company is now well known for its quality entry and patio doors, vinyl windows, Marvin windows and seamless gutters, as well as its experienced and certified installers who bring a passion for their craft to each client’s home.

“Our passion for what we do, our communication and also how we treat clients and their homes is what sets us apart in our industry,” Howe explained. “From our first contact with a potential client, cultivating a first-class experience for the homeowner is at the forefront of our minds. When it comes to craftsmanship and installations, if we are anything, we are meticulous and thorough with each project that we take on — from design and on to the installation itself.”

Mommy makeover is Dr. Nimtz’ most requested procedure. Typically, women think of a mommy makeover as some type of breast and belly procedure done at the same time to save on cost and recovery time. This is certainly true. Dr. Nimtz can, however, tailor a mommy makeover to address what each woman needs, such as using liposuction with a tightening device to tighten the problem area without a large scar. Some women may not need a full tummy tuck but still want a tighter abdomen, flanks and bra rolls. With Renuvion he can perform liposuction and then permanently tighten the skin.

Dr. Nimtz is also the first in KY to offer Aviclear, the first FDA-approved device to treat moderate to severe acne with three 30-minute treatments, with no numbing, no downtime, and can give you clearer skin and relief from acne.

Having an experienced CoolSculpting provider can make the difference between achieving a beautiful, non-surgical result versus seeing only slight changes.

Ms. Harms is the most experienced CoolSculpting provider in the state of Kentucky; practicing the longest and performing the most treatments. Dr. Schantz says, “Amanda’s artful work has secured her reputation as a provider who helps patients create meaningful changes both internally and externally. She is extremely knowledgeable on educating patients as to what is possible with various treatment methods for self-improvement. Then we can work to approach their personal health concerns together.”

Dr. Canavan practiced at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for eight years before bringing her expertise to Kenucky and, as a result, she has gained some unique insight into the future of her field.

Lexington’s The Joint Chiropractic makes chiropractic care affordable and convenient for everyone with unique offerings that differentiate it from other practices: It does not require appointments or insurance and it offers a variety of different packages to suit any needs.

“For me, getting to know patients and building a relationship is just as important as the care they receive,” explained Channing Fugate, the doctor of chiropractic for The Joint. “Our treatment plans are personalized to fit each patient’s needs and schedule. At The Joint, the frequency of care is completely up to the patient and how they feel.”

Becoming a new father himself last year, Fugate credits his mother and the entrepreneurship she displayed as the inspiration for his own commitment to patients. As the Central Kentucky region finds new focus on its health, he’s ready for growth.

“As people are gravitating more to natural health solutions, I believe chiropractic care will gain even more momentum as people seek out ways to treat pain without surgery and medicine,” Fugate explained. “Right now, around 10% of the population sees a chiropractor. Hopefully, in the future, that percentage will grow.”

LEXINGTON CLINIC Healthcare Innovation

With more than 100 years of serving patients, Lexington Clinic is Central Kentucky’s oldest and largest medical group, hosting more than 200 providers with expertise across more than 30 specialties. In total, Lexington Clinic employs more than 1,000 staff members and cares for more than 2,000 patients in the region every day. Across its more than 25 locations, it reaches some 600,000 patients per year.

With such overwhelming numbers, it’s clear that the group does an amazing amount of good. But at the same time, its team is able to remain focused on what matters to it more than the sheer volume of care: the quality.

“It’s all about the people and the process,” explained CEO Dr. Stephen J. Behnke. “If your organization can’t adapt to change and keep people and processes at the heart of it, it will not survive.”

At the heart of Lexington Clinic, patients will find the core tenets of service, integrity, excellence, compassion, respect and dedication — foundational elements that were first established by its founders. These guiding principles may be most apparent in the community outreach work that the Lexington Clinic does, like its diabetes education program, which provides patients with diabetes self-management education, and its Pink Ribbon Club, which supports women with breast cancer or who have had breast cancer.

But even though the Lexington Clinic is the region’s oldest and most prolific health organization, that doesn’t mean its leaders aren’t constantly striving to be better. For Behnke, that means continuing to orient care and services around the individuals who need them as well as advocating for his team members.

“I believe that we can do a better job of taking care of people by designing better systems and processes that allow better patient experiences,” he said. “Our patients deserve better, as do our staff.”

Behnke cites Dr. Barbara Casper and Dr. Joseph Mack as his personal role models, highlighting their kindness, leadership, innovation and process engineering skills as influences that drive the work he does every day at Lexington Clinic. And he also draws inspiration from the people who his team treats as well as the place where they do so.

“What I love about working in Lexington is that it has most of the big city amenities, but is much more relational, easy to navigate and retains that small-town charm,” he concluded.

In case her own drive and ambition weren’t indicators enough, Anderson’s commitment to professional progress is demonstrated by her outlook on the future of hair services and her passion for staying ahead of the curve.

“The future of my industry is always evolving and is always taking what’s been around forever in fashion and hair and modernizing it,” she reflected. “I love how there are always new techniques coming out and I love staying on top of all of the new trends, yet keeping it classic.”

GEORGETOWN COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

LEADER IN :

Community Health

As the market president for Lifepoint Health’s Central Kentucky market, Cliff Wilson guides the strategy for its four-hospital network in the area, driving the commitment of its 2,000 employees and 500 physicians to offer comprehensive healthcare at acute care hospitals and outpatient clinics.

“There is no substitute for hard work,” said Wilson, who also serves as the CEO of Lifepoint’s Georgetown Community Hospital. “That seems fairly basic, but I learned at a very young age on my parents’ farm that there are no shortcuts and hard work makes a big difference in outcomes and success, no matter what you do.”

Facing some unique challenges in the healthcare industry, including an ongoing nursing shortage and the residual effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wilson remains optimistic about upcoming opportunities and the trajectory of Lifepoint. Ultimately, he knows that this positivity will drive his entire team to success.

“Creating a vision and putting others in a position to execute not only allows the organization to benefit but, more importantly, it allows individuals to benefit,” he explained. “In my role as a healthcare leader, I am blessed with the opportunity to lead people and organizations entrusted with the highest honor: taking care of other human lives.”

CALOAESTHETICS

LEADER IN :

Aesthetic Surgery

For those within the aesthetic surgery industry, Dr. Bradley Calobrace’s work is never hard to find. He regularly publishes articles and textbook material, lectures extensively around the world and serves on the faculties of the universities of Louisville and of Kentucky. While his focus on being an educator might be a bit old school, it’s something that has set him and his businesses, CaloAesthetics and the accompanying CaloSpa, apart in their field.

“I believe in today’s world, while surgeons are often self-credentialed and promoted through social media, I am a bit old fashioned,” Dr. Calobrace explained. “But I believe that the promotion of my work through educational leadership is more authentic.”

Dr. Calobrace’s leadership extends far beyond his role as a KOL and educator, into his surgical talent and beautiful patient results. After all, that’s why he is sought out by his peers and patients from around the world. From a young age, Dr. Calobrace felt inclined toward leadership roles and has cultivated a model for dynamic business growth that has clearly served CaloAesthetics.

“I have given a lecture entitled ‘Creating Financial Stability For Uncertain Times,’ and in that lecture I discuss the need to be cautious of debt load and trying not to over leverage your business or personal finances,” he explained. “Don’t spend money before you make it and try to pay down debt instead of taking all of the money out of your business. Of course, one usually has to create debt to scale and grow — just be cautious and expand slowly and deliberately.”

This philosophy has helped Dr. Calobrace’s business expand to serve numerous locations, all with its signature excellent care and customer convenience in mind. As he looks toward the future of his industry, Dr. Calobrace is prepared to keep his team at the forefront of growing opportunities.

CALOSPA REJUVENATION CENTER

LEADER IN :

Non-Surgical Rejuvenation

CaloSpa Rejuvenation Center is one of the most respected aesthetic practices in the country, becoming a leader in non-surgical rejuvenation. As a world-class medical spa, offering treatments and services designed to achieve desired results in a safe, physician-supervised environment, it hosts the largest medical spa open house event in the country, serving as a model for many others in the industry.

“CaloSpa provides one of the largest selections of advanced treatments available to achieve each client’s vision of beauty at three convenient locations in Louisville, Lexington and Floyds Knobs, Indiana,” the CaloSpa Rejuvenation Center team explained. “Our team of professionals are individually selected for their patient-centric approaches, knowledge and experience.”

The practice’s unparalleled team offers a wide variety of services, including facial injectables, body contouring, cellulite treatments, hair restoration, advanced laser treatments, facials and CaloWellness therapies. CaloSpa’s ExpertInjectors perform more injectable treatments than any other practice in the State of Kentucky.

With this approach, which combines the range of services available to only the most highlytrained staff along with the care and attention of only the most dedicated providers, it’s clear to see how CaloSpa Rejuvenation Center has become the leader that it is today.

The authenticity of this practice is apparent for anyone who has been a patient of CaloAesthetics, which has served the region with an unparalleled commitment to care for more than two decades.

“Excellence in service and in the treatments we provide have been our value proposition at CaloSpa and CaloAesthetics plastic surgery over the past 25 years,” said Dr. Bradley Calobrace.

“The future is bright,” he concluded. “Aesthetic medicine is growing and more and more people have been able to enjoy the benefits of no-surgical and surgical aesthetic procedures. More effective non-surgical treatment will continue to emerge, toxins and fillers will continue to become safe and last longer and lasers and devices will actually provide benefits that even surgeries can’t. Surgeries will continue to be less invasive and highly effective.

“Necessity is the Mother of Invention”

Dr. John Marshall Mullins is the Founder of the Marshall Medical Group – formed to offer executive men and women with little time to spare and a NEED to remain in top physical and mental health to match their demanding / dynamic lives an alternative to conventional reactive healthcare.

“I suppose, by some, I would be characterized as an entrepreneur, but I certainly do not view myself that way. I tend to focus on projects that would benefit my own life. I notice areas in healthcare that I personally view as problematic and frustrating and conceptualize an alternative vision. Rather than gripe about healthcare mishaps and inefficiencies, I view them all as opportunities.

Healthcare has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I chose healthcare as a career because it satisfied my own interests in helping others. I have always believed that healthcare should be a positive experience. Even the most tragic of circumstances, can be handled with professionalism, compassion, and genuine empathy. I design healthcare models that allow for a positive experience. While nothing diminishes the pain of health challenges to yourself or your family, having an advocate in these times of crisis can help. I want me, my staff, and my facilities to provide a positive experience to my patients. I want to be available for my patients during challenging times.”

Dr. John Marshall Mullins wishes to innovate healthcare and started Marshall Lifestyle Medicine as a passion project. His mission is to eliminate barriers preventing patients from receiving life optimizing care and to change the way patients feel about their doctor – patient relationship. “The philosophy I pass on to my team is to treat every client like they would want to be treated,” explained Lykins, a branch manager at AnnieMac Home Mortgage with 19 years of experience and numerous industry awards to his name. “Honesty and transparency are critical for all aspects of life, especially for my realtor friends and for our home buyers’ experience.”

Lykins relies on an extensive background across all facets of mortgage lending — including conventional, jumbo, FHA, VA, USDA and renovation loans — to advise his team members and their clients through any situation, from firsttime home purchasing to refinances. Utilizing expertise built over her own career behind mics and editing software, Jennifer Longworth helps new podcasters get up and running with their shows and aids established podcasters by enhancing audio to minimize distractions through her firm Bourbon Barrel Podcasting.

“Being an editor from Central Kentucky who focuses on Central Kentucky clients sets me apart from the other thousands of podcast editors out there,” Longworth explained. “I co-founded the Lexington Podcasters in 2018 because I knew that I couldn’t possibly be the only podcaster in the area. I want others to know that they are not alone and that I’m here to help them along their podcast journey. I guess it all comes down to wanting to help people.”

Longworth has been invited to speak at numerous national podcast industry conferences and is involved in networking groups like Women Leading Kentucky and Commerce Lexington. As a local leader in the podcasting field, she has distilled some valuable advice.

“Find your niche audience and serve them well,” she recommended. “Niching down provides greater clarity and direction. The riches are in the niches.”

THE LEXINGTON SCHOOL FOR RECORDING ARTS

Recording Arts Education

At The Lexington School for Recording Arts (LSRA), students can develop their passions for music and the entertainment industry into fruitful careers for the rest of their lives. And with small class sizes, guaranteed one-on-one instruction and all in-person lessons, they can be sure they are getting the best possible value for investing in themselves by enrolling.

“The audio, video and technology industry is growing at an amazing 21%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics,” explained Carolyn Austin, LSRA’s president, and Steve Nall, its award-winning engineer.

“There are jobs everywhere. If you see it or hear it, it was created by a trained technician.”

LSRA is the only licensed audio/video propriety education facility in all of Kentucky, housed inside of a state-of-the-art recording studio that exposes students to real-world industry experiences. But it’s about more than just preparing students for a career upon graduation, it’s about giving them the tools to live out their passions every day.

“There are only four kinds of jobs: a job you love, like, tolerate or hate,” reflected Austin and Nall. “If you love your work, life is good. We practice what we teach: work hard, play harder. Always enjoy what you are doing and always do your best! A good leader passes these concepts forward.”

As the staff at LSRA prepares the next generation for audio/video production careers, it emphasizes personal responsibility and the fact that it is not teaching music, art, science, technology or business, but rather, it is teaching students. And doing all of this in the heart of the Bluegrass is central to its success.

“We live where we work,” said Austin and Nall. “We have the charm of a small Southern town coupled with the amenities, technology and culture of a large city.”

Taking full advantage of those amenities and serving as a prime example of this access to technology, LSRA continues to serve its students with irreplaceable perspective on where the entertainment industry is going, as well as where it has been.

“Of course, we have tomorrow’s technology today, but we also house a Museum of Sight and Sound that dates back to the 1800s,” Austin and Nall explained. “This is a rare place where today’s young adults can see and touch a hand-crank Victrola record player, flash bulbs, camera film, dial phones, eight-track cassettes and tiny transistor radios. It gives them an invaluable perspective on this fast-paced industry.”

QURESHI DEVELOPMENT GROUP

LEADER IN :

Real Estate Development

Formed from its founders’ community service efforts in Lexington, Qureshi Development Group (QDG) is now underway with its inaugural affordable housing project. As the leadership team of Aqsa, Humza and Hera Qureshi work toward this opening, they continue to be driven by the conviction that it will make a massive positive impact for so many in their community.

“As regular volunteers at the SHARE community service center on Georgetown Street and, more recently, the founders of the free clinic now operating out of the center, we were looking for ways to do more for the area,” they explained. “Affordable housing is a huge need and we feel blessed to make a difference in the same community that we grew up in.”

The Qureshis are medical professionals by training, but it may be the QDG venture that leaves the strongest legacy on the community that they hold so dear. Feeling compelled to make a difference using their resources and talents, the siblings began to consider impact investing, driven first and foremost by their desire to improve the lives of those who will be impacted. Their vision for what the residents of this city need most for today as well as for tomorrow is what continues to inform QDG’s mission.

“What we’re seeing on the Lexington front is a commitment from the local government to find unique solutions to the growing issue of affordable housing,” they said. “With an emphasis on reuse of existing green spaces and urban infill, we envision a future where developers, urban planners and elected officials all work collaboratively to create more sustainable and affordable cities.”

DUPREE CATERING + EVENTS

With more than 35 years of experience catering events across Central Kentucky, Dupree Catering & Events has learned the valuable lesson of pliability.

“Always be willing to be flexible,” said the Dupree team of Executive Chef Jane Thompson, Pastry Chef Halida Cindric and Sous Chef Brooke Andreas. “We all know that many things we do, from intaking farm-fresh produce to relying on egg prices to timelines at a wedding, can be less than straightforward. When you allow yourself the room for change, you are able to offer the best experience possible for your guests, while also decreasing your personal stress levels.”

Dupree has earned a reputation for always bringing the freshest, scratch-made meals and top-notch service making the most of the slew of local farmers and vendors that this region provides. Looking forward to the next 35 years and beyond, Dupree feels that doubling down on that approach will pay dividends.

“There are several additional factors that set us apart as well,” Todd said. “For one, our amazing teachers — many of them have advanced credentials and all of them share the love of teaching. We have several teachers who have been here for over 20 years. Another would be our families — we owe a lot to our wonderful families, and their support means more to us than they can possibly imagine. And lastly, I would add our location! We are situated just minutes from Man O’ War and overlook prestigious Juddmonte Farms. The bucolic setting and serene location provide a perfect venue for the school’s island of excellence.”

When it comes to considerations for the future, Walnut Hill is clearly poised to grow, as it has always been built on the concept that its work is just as important for tomorrow as it is for today.

“In our industry, the children come first and they are our future and the reason why we come to school each day,” Todd said. “We want our students to leave our school fully prepared for their next educational journey.”

Finally, Walnut Hill’s place in our community ensures that both this school and its students will continue to achieve the best.

And while seemingly everyone is now an amateur photographer with their own devices, Lowe sees that there is a significant demand for professional images that create irreplaceable mementos which can’t be replicated at home.

“With the onslaught of cameras on iPhones and other devices, more images will be taken of people than they have been in any other generation,” she explained.

“However, we will have the least amount of evidence of people’s existence due to the lack of printing of one’s images.”

home office trends

148 TOPS | March 2023
TIM FURLONG, JR.

ifyou don’t have some sort of home office setup, we have just one question for you; “Why?” We acknowledge that it’s important to have a good work-life balance. That’s precisely why we love having a dedicated office space; it actually helps delineate work and home rather than the opposite. We’ll show you how beautiful a home office can be and give you tips for being more efficient in your home office so you can get back to living your life!

a desk with a view

More and more home offices are thoughtfully placing the workspace in a window. That seems like a small thing, but it has real impacts for your overall well-being. Windows in your workspace have been proven to boost your energy levels, reduce work-related stress and improve your overall feeling of happiness. In a home office, this also allows you the chance to feel more connected to your home and family, especially if the window overlooks a spot where kids might be playing outside. This will naturally encourage you to get your work done!

texture

We’re seeing tons of home offices that incorporate lush fabrics and luxurious textures. And it just makes sense! One of the benefits of working from home is a sense of comfort; shouldn’t your home office space be designed to maximize that feeling? From velvet desk chairs to elegant drapes, texture brings warmth to what could be a sterile space.

If your current setup feels a little “blah,” start with what’s most immediate. If you’re uncomfortable at your desk, start with the chair. If that’s fine, think about what’s directly in your line of sight; lamps, desk accessories, wallpaper and window treatments can all make a big splash.

love the idea of a home office setup that is a seamless part of your space. Each of these desks is built into a larger space that functions as a library and storage area. Having a desk as a part of a built-in cabinet area means any wall can easily become your new office. Unused or under-utilized closets, dens, family rooms, pantries and “junk” rooms all afford you the space you need to create an office setup!

Both of these setups feature trends we’re seeing everywhere lately. Darker cabinets offer a luxe look that helps the office both feel like a feature while looking like a more organic part of the overall whole. Wallpaper brings texture and a custom feel that we just adore.

co r matters

We all know that color theory truly matters. Gone are the days of stark, boring offices; nobody feels productive in that kind of environment, especially when it’s in your house. Instead, people are carefully choosing color schemes that help them feel at home and ready to work. (If you love white or beige walls, we support you; just be sure to choose a neutral that gives you the right “vibe.”)

And while we’ve always put wallpaper on anything that would hold still long enough, statement wallpaper is very much on-trend right now. We encourage you to give it a go!

on the up&up

More home offices are going vertical. Shelves reaching to the ceiling were originally driven by necessity, but people are realizing the storage potential of their office spaces. We love how the shape and color of these cabinets is mirrored by the ceiling design.

Drawing the eye upward makes the area feel grander; everyone’s office needs a sense of gravitas! Vertical lines will help elongate the space. Pedestal tables, framed glass doors, built-in shelving, interesting ceilings, tall plants and geometric furniture can help pull off this design trick.

If you love this look, what should you avoid? Heavy, bulky desks can “weigh down” the bottom half of the room; on the flip side, large, excessively decorative lighting can have the same effect on the top half. Aim for balance –good advice for any situation, right?

accessorize!

Studies show that personal accessories help us feel more connected to our work. And in a home office, accessories help our work feel connected to our house!

In 2023, office accessories are trending toward items that seem to have a handcrafted look. That includes bouclé woven fabrics, texture pottery and organic, imperfect shapes. People are really leaning toward storied pieces with tons of character. Vintage, artisan and heirloom pieces can really add that to your space. In Kentucky, equestrian or Bourbon accessories are always on-trend.

old meets new on 2nd street

built in 1843 by Reverend John Ward, this gorgeous 6-bedroom in the heart of downtown Lexington holds so much intriguing history. Though it now houses an interior designer based out of Los Angeles and her dogs, former President Abraham Lincoln once walked the halls while his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, attended John Ward’s Academy.

Before it was restored back to a single family home, this house served as separate apartments – and later as the first bed and breakfast in Lexington!

“There were many layers of things that did not belong that made no sense and had to be removed,” says the owner. “After demo, it was so interesting to find the original wood floor covered with intact newspaper from the early 1920s.”

The gated home sits on a half acre property and was originally built in the Italianate style and modified in the 1870s to add the relaxing sleeping porch, tower, and an attic. Today, the owner describes its style as “modern vintage.” Many pieces were sourced from estate sales and local antique shops to achieve a layered, collectedover-time feel that respects the impressive history of the home. “I wanted a home I could update, and now it’s a contrast of old/new, city/ country, and masculine/feminine.”

question dinner party

Recently, TikTok user @alliegoneaway started a viral trend by suggesting, “Every grown adult needs a stand out dinner party question.” We think that’s great advice!

First of all, what is a dinner party question?

Think of them as conversation starters that you can interject into any setting, in any company. These questions should spark conversation– not controversy. Steer clear of politics, religion and other hot button topics. And they shouldn’t allow “yes or no” responses; the best dinner party questions are ones that are open-ended, inviting people to explain their choice.

The original poster’s suggestion: “If after you die, you could come back for only five minutes – and you couldn’t see your family or friends – where would you go?”

Here are more suggestions to have in your back pocket for the next lull in conversation over dinner or drinks. Be your own conversation card game!

•If you could invite any four people to a dinner party – alive or dead – who would make it on the guest list and what would you serve?

•If you could live anywhere in the world for free for a year, where would you go?

•What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever had to Google?

•What is your most treasured possession?

•If you were walking through an empty field –you were reasonably sure no one is watching, you couldn’t see any cameras – and came across a duffel bag filled with cash, would you take it?

•If you could magically become any person for 24 hours, who would you be?

•What would the title of your autobiography be?

•Who/what do you want to be when you grow up? (This is tongue-incheek, obviously, as you’ll probably be among adults.)

•If you could have any single object in the world completely free, but you couldn’t sell it, give it away or otherwise benefit from it other than just having it and enjoying it, what would you want?

•Who is your hero, and why?

•What’s the most memorable meal you’ve ever eaten – good or bad? •

Howexciting! You and your best girl friends or boo thing are going on a trip! Now comes the hard part; actually planning your vacation. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love even the tiniest of details that come with planning a trip, but most people would rather have their vacation completely booked with the snap of a finger. If you’re one of those people, you’re in luck; we’ve compiled a list of tips and tricks to make planning your next family vacation, galpal getaway, or solo self-care retreat the easiest you’ve planned yet. Bon voyage!

The Flight

Book Early

The flight is often the most expensive part of a trip, and knowing how to score a deal on airfare can help you save big. One of the easiest ways to save on your flight is to book early, as it only gets more expensive the closer it gets to takeoff. Try booking about 3 to 6 months ahead, but if you’re worried prices may drop lower, you can set up price alerts on apps like Google Flights, Kayak, and Hopper.

Travel Sites

If you have more flexible travel dates, Skyscanner may be your best friend. The website’s whole month price comparison feature allows travelers to see prices for each day of the month, and you can even search by the cheapest month! If you’re really itching to jet off somewhere but don’t quite know when or where, Skyscanner’s Everywhere feature is one of the best ways to get a cheap flight. Just enter your departure airport and your destination as everywhere, and Skyscanner will show you the cheapest places you can fly, and when.

Flexibility

Unfortunately, the myth of booking your flight on a Tuesday for the lowest fares has been debunked, but certain days of the week are cheaper to fly. Mondays and Fridays tend to be more in demand and more expensive, with Tuesdays and Wednesdays usually being the cheapest. If booking your flight for midweek still doesn’t help your rate, changing your airport might. Bigger cities like New York and Los Angeles have multiple airports, and flying into a smaller one could help you save. Even using a combination of flights, buses, trains, or rental cars will get you to your destination for less, especially if you’re visiting Europe. You’d be surprised how fast you can get from London to Paris by train!

Packing Cubes

For the most efficient packing, packing cubes are a hero product. Packing cubes comes in various shapes and sizes, and help compress and separate your clothing for the most beautifully packed suitcase you’ve ever seen. If you’re on a short trip and don’t feel like completely unpacking, packing cubes are a great way to keep your clothes organized by day or activity, so you don’t have to wreck your whole suitcase to get one outfit. Our editor Fran swears by packing cubes, and says she was able to fit a week’s worth of outfits in a carry on with them! You can also use the cubes to store items other than clothing, like electronics, camera gear, daily essentials, or toiletries.

Check List

If you’re anything like me, you’ll wait to pack your suitcase the night before your trip and make a mental checklist, but may or may not end up forgetting something. Preparing a checklist that you physically check off as you load down your suitcase can ensure no item is left behind, and apps like Packing Pro and PackPoint make packing easy with their premade templates and themes.

Bundled Up

Even if you’re not using packing cubes, there are still ways to keep your suitcase organized and clothes looking nice. When putting your outfits together, try to opt for clothing that doesn’t wrinkle easily, like denim, knits, wool, spandex, and polyester. Then, when you’re ready to pack everything up, roll your clothes by outfit to prevent wrinkles. For example, if you’re preparing for a hike, roll your pants, undergarments, socks, shirt, and any other items you need, together to form a bundle. Then, you can easily find what you’re looking for when getting dressed and there’s no flustered digging through your suitcase!

Who doesn’t love a matching set? These packing cubes from Calpak (Cognac Set, $68) and Away Travel (Slate Blue Set, $64) will make any traveler feel organized and aesthetically pleased at the same time.

Themed and adorable stationery make planning so much more fun! With this checklist notepad from Rifle Paper Co., you’re sure to get in the traveling spirit. ($12)

Pet Sitters

If your pet gets anxious when you’re away, a good pet sitter could be your saving grace. Your precious pooch or feisty feline remains in the comfort of their own home and continues on with their regular schedule, while receiving lots of love from their sitter! Pet sitters can also check on the rest of your home, like watering any plants that are getting a little droopy. Before your sitter arrives, make sure your pet is okay welcoming people into their home, prepare your house for their stay, and write down any specific care instructions for your pet. Now, rest assured that your pets are in loving hands and enjoy your vacation!

Boarding Kennels

Rather than getting a sitter while you’re gone, you can also take your pet to a boarding kennel, a sort of “hotel” for animals. These facilities provide opportunities for your pet to socialize with other animals and people, while also being a comfortable spot for them to eat, sleep, and play. Since your pet will be around other animals, make sure they are updated on any vaccinations or treatments and let the boarding facility know of any behavioral issues that could arise. You can also leave an unwashed item of clothing with your pet so they can be comforted by your scent while you’re gone.

Be Prepared

Travel Insurance

Accidents can happen anywhere, and a medical emergency can wipe out your savings, especially if you’re overseas. Though we all like to think that could never happen to us, travel insurance is a fairly inexpensive way to get financial coverage in the case that you hurt your back, lose your passport, or have to cancel your trip for other reasons.

Important Documents

When I traveled to Paris with a school group in 2016, two of our chaperones got their passports stolen and the process they had to go through to get back to the US was long and intense. Making handy dandy copies of important documents like your license and passport can help you if you find yourself in a situation like this, ultimately saving the day!

Carry-Ons

In the unfortunate case that your luggage is lost in transit, having essentials in your carryon could save you money, time, and lots of frustration. Stuff your carry-on with an extra outfit, your medications, electronics, toiletries like a toothbrush and contact solution, and if you’re headed to somewhere tropical, throw in an extra bathing suit. Once you’re sunbathing on the warm sand, you’ll be glad you were prepared!

Walk Thru

Your Dream Home with Walk Thru Plans

Central Kentucky native Aaron White spent many hours in his youth working construction at his family’s construction business. What followed was 18+ years working around the globe within the technology industry while focusing on software and engineering management. The intersection between his early years of hands-on labor and advanced software technology experience led him to Walk Thru Plans.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

What is Walk Thru Plans?

Walk Thru Plans focuses on providing services that allow clients to physically walk through their plans on a 1 to 1 scale while making changes in real-time with their architect, builder, or designer of choice. This cuttingedge projection technology uses the proposed floor plans to “project” the image on the floor and adjacent walls of the company’s 9000 sq. ft. studio. This allows clients to get a true-to-scale representation of the space they want to create. Staged furniture and walls can be adjusted so that they can see and understand exactly how much space they have while experiencing the true flow of the room or space BEFORE it is built. Additionally, if clients want to fully immerse themselves, AR/VR support can be included using VR headsets.

What is the mission/philosophy behind the business?

“Our mission is empowering individuals to experience their dream spaces through innovative floorplan walkthroughs” says Aaron. “Technology is best when it brings people together, and we strive to make the design and planning process fun again! Whether you’re building a home, remodeling kitchen cabinets and bathrooms, installing a patio and pool, building a hospital, opening a restaurant, planning a wedding, or building playgrounds, we all have similar goals. Save money, save time, and gain certainty.”

As a proud central Kentuckian, Aaron wanted to build a new home for his young growing family. As with most families, this was the largest financial investment they will make. Planning the design from a small blueprint was stressful, and simply looking at mock-ups didn’t give him a true sense of how it would all come together. This is when the concept clicked as he thought “What if I could walk through these floorplans in a real-life scale?”. Aaron’s grandfather left a powerful impact on his life and his drive to succeed in business. “If you rest, you rust” he states. Setting high goals and never giving up drive his passion for Walk Thru Plans.

Walk Thru Plans has a vision to revolutionize the design, pre-construction, and planning industries worldwide through the integration of their technology. With their technology and studio experience running less than $1000 depending on the package, it often costs much less than 1% of the building cost of a kitchen remodel, pool, or large landscape installation. A new home or major renovation cost is a fraction of 1%. Walk Thru Plans is an affordable and effective solution for everyone. The company is firmly centered around the belief that everyone deserves to have confidence in their design decisions and the ability to fully experience and visualize their space before a dollar is spent on construction.

The Pros of Working with Walk Through Plans

Current and future homeowners who have built or remodeled know that changes to the design often occur after the fact. These changes often come with big expenses. Imagine being able to experience your home before it’s even built; walking through every room, the hallways, etc. and understanding exactly what kind of space you will have. Walk Through Plans eliminates the need for late changes and modifications so that you end up with a home that is perfectly suited to you and your lifestyle.

For Commercial Clients: Bring your entire team together to collaborate and walk through your project in full, lifelike scale. Cut down on months of meetings, emails, and phone calls while utilizing the state-of-the-art studio to host team and client meetings.

For Builders and Architects: Revolutionize your client interactions and set yourself apart from the competition. Say goodbye to endless showroom visits and vague explanations of what the space “should” look like. Bring their dream property to life right before their eyes.

For Remodelers: Elevate your client experience and bring your designs to life. Identify tight spaces and exact placement of cabinets and islands. Reduce the need for costly and time consuming modifications during the renovation process, ensuring your projects are completed efficiently and to the highest standard.

Even if the weather doesn’t feel like it, summer is quickly approaching. Although, we live in Kentucky where the seasons seem to change daily, so summer could be here tomorrow, who knows! Before we can swap out our turtlenecks and long johns for flirty sundresses that expose our blinding pallor, our skin needs a good refresher. Grab your wine, grab your lotion, and grab your favorite fuzzy socks, because we’re getting our skin ready to spring into summer!

Staying moisturized is one of the best things you can do for a well-rounded skin regimen, and body-firming products go beyond just keeping your skin moisturized. These creams and lotions work to encourage collagen production and can improve your skin’s texture, helping it to look firmer, smoother, and younger. When choosing a cream, dermatologists recommend picking a formula that contains antioxidants, such as vitamins C, A, E, and B3, and other ingredients like hyaluronic, salicylic, and glycolic acids. Though body-firming creams aren’t the end-all be-all, they can dramatically help the upper layers of your skin look supple and firm. We’ve done our research, and these are the skin tightening creams and lotions we think are worthy of adding to your luxurious skincare routine.

Revisio Skicae BodiFi 8 10

Using iFirm Technology, a blend of peptides, antioxidants, botanical extracts, and a prebiotic, BodiFirm contains a unique, body-specific blend of ingredients to achieve more tonedlooking skin. This product was formulated specifically to address concerns on the body, more specifically the arms, abdomen, buttocks, and thighs, and was designed to sculpt and tone the skin on these areas. While we love the results of this cream, it does have to be applied twice daily and is a bit expensive at the price point of $270 for an 8 ounce tube. Overall, we give BodiFirm an 8/10!

Ski-Sooting Retiol Boy Teatent

We all know how good retinol is for the face, but it can work wonders for the body, too! Pure retinol and antioxidants help transform dry, uneven skin to soft, firmer-looking skin, while natural butters like shea and plant oils instantly hydrate your skin. The reviews we read for this product were outstanding, with most raving about how well it works smoothing skin, and even as a scar treatment. There’s not much we can say about this treatment that isn’t positive, especially with its price set at $29 and it being fragrance free. Although, we do wish it came in a bigger size than the 4 ounce bottle currently offered. Paula’s Choice, we give you a 9/10!

Mio Fi Ski Routie Duo

This duo contains Mio’s Get Waisted Stomach Firming Serum and Peachy Cheeks Bum Booster Cream, both formulated with Mio’s Smooth Booster Complex. Mio’s products are vegan friendly, powered by plant-based chemistry, and contain cruelty-free formulas designed to naturally firm tone and tighten skin. While you’re getting waisted, this serum will work its magic to leave your stomach area feeling tighter and firmer with hydrating ingredients like Red Marine Algae. Around the corner, the Bum Booster Cream gently exfoliates to improve your skin’s texture and is supercharged with natural firming properties to smooth bumpy areas. While we love that these products come in a duo, we would love it even more if there was a set with all of Mio’s body-firming products. It’s hard to beat this duo’s $44 price, so we give Mio an 8/10!

More than just a body moisturizer, this treatment is jam packed with potent peptides and other key ingredients like Jojoba Seed Extract and Turmeric Root Extract. This lightweight, firming formula restores elasticity to crepey skin, boosting skin luminosity and deeply nourishing your body. If you’re looking to take your skincare a step further, StriVectin also has a Crepe Control Body System which includes the tightening body cream and an exfoliating body scrub. is nearly here... believe it or not! There is so much to do before April 9th hops into town. Whether you’re hosting a big, festive meal or just hunting eggs on the lawn with your littles, we have tips to help you get a head start on this hoppy celebration!

LIVING

What the Devil?!

Pretty in Pink Eggs

2 15-ounce cans sliced beets

12 hard-boiled eggs, peeled

1 c. sugar

1 c. water

1 c. vinegar

Not to sound overly dramatic, but if you’re not serving deviled eggs at your Easter shindig, we’re not comin’. This Southern culinary staple couldn’t be a better fit for springtime dining. Plus, they basically serve double duty as Easter décor! We truly appreciate the classics, but if you’re looking for a fun twist for your eggs, here are some ideas.

Guacole Eggs

6 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and halved

2 ripe avocados

1 T lime juice

1 T sour cream

1 T chopped cilantro

Drain beets (see notes), reserving 1 cup of juice. Place beets and eggs in a large glass jar. Bring reserved beet juice, sugar, water and vinegar to a boil. Let cool slightly, then pour over beets and eggs in jar. Cover tightly. Refrigerate.

Note: if you want to scale this recipe to do more eggs at once, don’t worry about sourcing more cans of beets; just reserve more juice. For a delicate pink edge, as shown here, soak the eggs overnight. For egg whites that are completely pink, let sit for up to a week before the big meal. These are great as-is, or prepare as you normally would for deviled eggs. If you’re a big fan of beets, feel free to chop up some of the beets from the jar and add to your deviled egg mixture!

Pinch freshly ground pepper

In a bowl, combine scooped out avocado flesh and 2-4 yolks; mash with a fork. Stir in lime juice, sour cream, cilantro and pepper. Scoop or pipe into halved egg whites. Garnish with chopped chilies, chives or cilantro. Little slices of radish will add some texture and festive color.

Note: Feel free to stir in other ingredients you typically enjoy in your gaucamole, such as minced onion, tomato or chilies. If you like a little spice, a shake of hot sauce, such as Cholula or Valentina, can bring the heat.

Set Scthee

If there’s one holiday that really invites you fully, giddily to embrace whimsy, it’s Easter! As springtime finally makes itself known, we’re feeling a little spring in our steps. Even though the weather usually isn’t quite right for picnics, we always think of ways to bring the feel of an outdoor dining experience indoors.

Mismat It

We always love mismatched glassware and plates, but it’s a look that’s especially appropriate for the playful spirit of Easter. Our best advice is to either stick to a single color and mismatch the textures, or to select a single standout color.

Veg Out

Is there anything more precious than cabbage plates?! When we think of bunnies, we think of gardens; vegetable-themed plates, terrines and platters are more than welcome at our table.

Natul Matials

Woven rattan placemats, trays, napkin rings and chargers instantly make us think of warmer weather. Tucking live flowers, eggs, birds’ nests and greenery into your tablescape will bring spring to the party.

Colorful Glasswe

Clear glassware can be beautiful, but it often doesn’t have the impact that colorful glass brings to the table (pun intended). Whereas clear glasses disappear into the background, colored glass underscores the color theme and brings visual interest to each placesetting.

Flols for Spng?

Yeah, yeah. We get it; it’s hardly groundbreaking to suggest floral patterns for a spring table. But the right tablecloth or napkin set could serve you for months to come – and certainly again next Easter.

Cute Nkins

If you invest in themed napkins for just one event a year, make it Easter. Especially if your other table décor has more of a general “spring” vibe, napkins featuring bunnies, eggs or ducklings will bring everything together.

POTTERY BARN WILLIAMS SONOMA WILLIAMS SONOMA

East Tree

The “Ostereierbaum” is a tradition brought to the US by German immigrants. You can buy premade Easter trees of any size, but it’s easy to transform any tree or shrub in your yard! Simply string plastic eggs on ribbon and hang them from the branches.

Hot Cross Buns

Traditional fare for Good Friday, hot cross buns are steeped in symbolism – and superstition! One tradition states that hanging hot cross buns baked on Good Friday in your kitchen will protect against fires and will help ensure that all the bread you bake in the coming year will turn out perfectly!

Egg Roll

In the 1870s, it was popular for kids to roll Easter eggs down Capitol Hill. The practice was banned when the rowdy youths began leaving the place a mess. President Rutherford B. Hayes issued a proclaimation that any kids who wanted to roll eggs could do so on the White House lawn – and the practice has continued ever since.

Sunse Svice

The Bible story goes that Mary visited Jesus’s tomb at dawn on Easter to find it empty. The first church “sunrise service” commemorating this story was held in 1732 in Saxony. Since then, it has become a tradition among congregations all over the world, often with live bands and picnic brunches.

Jping

Egg knocking or egg jarping is a silly Easter egg game with roots in Medieval times. Two players hold eggs and tap the pointed eggs together; whichever one doesn’t break “survives” to the next round of competition. Most people play with dyed, hard-boiled eggs, but some “dye”-hards insist on using raw eggs.

Fun

Bonnets

to Try!

As Irving Berlin put it, “In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it/You’ll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade!” In records dating back to the 16th century, it was considered good luck to wear new clothes for Easter. Hats were a thrifty way to sport something new on Easter Sunday. They became a flashy tradition in many churches and communities. This year, try making your own Easter bonnet!

L b or H

In early Jewish history, lambs were often seen as sacrifices to God and served as part of the Passover feast. This was also seen as symbolic of Jesus for Christians. On the other hand, a lot of folks just love ham for Easter! It’s a symbol of good luck in many cultures – and most Americans simply prefer it over the taste of lamb.

Deting Eggs

The tradition of decorating eggs appears in many cultures – in fact, archaeologists have uncovered engraved ostrich eggs in Africa that are over 60,000 years old! Dyed eggs became a part of Easter celebrations due to the Lenten fast; households ended up with an excess of eggs that they’d have to use up before they went bad! Now, we decorate eggs mostly for fun. While the tradition of decorating eggs is nothing new, there’s always room for innovation. There are countless techniques for dyeing and decorating Easter eggs. Pinterest and TikTok can offer lots of fun ideas!

Crot Cookies

If Santa gets a treat for leaving gifts, why not the Easter Bunny? Bake and decorate Easter cookies to leave out the night before Easter –bonus points if they look (or taste) like carrots! This is a fun tradition to start... and enjoy.

East Lilies

Many churches and civic organizations sell white lilies for the Easter season. Buy a pot in honor of someone special to decorate a church, or bring a bouquet home to spiff up your space! There’s also a big tradition of buying them and delivering them for Easter, so if you’re looking for an excuse to call on a friend, lilies are the perfect excuse to hop to it!

One of the most exciting times in the Bluegrass is well on its way: the Keeneland Spring Meet!

Keeneland’s 2023 Spring Meet begins April 7th and comes to a close April 28th, with races every Wednesday through Sunday, with the exception of Easter Sunday on April 9th. The first post of the day is typically at 1 pm and gates open at 11 am, though attendees usually arrive early to tailgate in the parking lot or on The Hill. Pro tip: If you’re in General Admission and want to get a seat, get inside early because there are limited benches and they tend to go quickly!

During the Spring Meet, there are certain days you can find more than just racing going on, like the College Scholarship Day on April 14th, Military Day on April 16th, and Kids Club Family Day on April 23rd. If you’re visiting from out of town and have a few days to spare after the meet ends, the Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale is happening April 30th.

Tailgating at Keeneland makes for an even more enjoyable day at the races, as long as you don’t go too hard before you get a chance to place a bet! There are multiple areas where patrons can set up, including The Hill and The Meadow, where there’s free public parking, and the paved parking area where limited parking is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Hill is Keeneland’s official tailgate lot and on the weekends you can find food trucks, live music, a jumbo tv to watch the races, and plenty of college students ready to party. This is the perfect spot to set up your table and chairs and enjoy a few drinks and

yummy snacks before heading to the complimentary shuttle service that will bus you right up to the Grandstand area. If you’re looking to have a large tailgating setup complete with charcoal grill and cornhole, The Hill is where you should be. For a more intimate tailgate closer to the gates, the paved parking area allows for tables and chairs as long as they stay out of the parking lanes. There are also premium tailgating options for groups of any size, where you can reserve tents, tables, chairs, and more on The Hill.

Betting Tips

Keeneland Select

Sure, some people consider that walk up to the betting window part of the authentic Keeneland experience, but the Keeneland Select app makes betting quick and easy... maybe even a little too easy! The app lets you view tracks that have racing going on that day, all the stats you could need, expert picks, tools to help you bet smarter, and you can keep the money that you win in your account until the next time you decide to bet. You can also earn rewards points which can get you special Keeneland perks! Keeneland also has BETologists that can give you helpful betting tips on the first floor under the grandstand.

Placing your Bet

The first step in betting is choosing the type of bet you want to place. There are tons of options, including standard and exotic bets, so don’t feel bad if you are unfamiliar with them all. Win-place-show bets are the most common kind of bets, but exotic bets like an Exacta or Trifecta can end up winning you more money. View our betting cheat sheet to help you learn more about the basic types of bets.

After you choose your type of bet, find a place to actually place your bet. You can go to one of Keeneland’s many betting windows, a self-service machine, use the Keeneland Select app, or other betting apps. When placing your bet, choose the name of the track first, then the race number, amount of bet, type of bet, and finally, the number of horses. For example, “I want to bet on Keeneland, Race 4, $3 to win on the 6 horse.” Simple as that! Make sure to keep a tight grip on your ticket, you want to receive your money if you win!

Win: Your horse finishes in 1st place

Place: Your horse finishes in 1st or 2nd place

Show: Your horse finishes in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place

Exacta: Your horses finish within the top two, in exact order

Exacta Box: Your horses finish within the top two, in any order

Trifecta: Your horses finish within the top three, in exact order

Trifecta Box: Your horses finish within the top three, in any order

Superfecta: Your horses finish within the top four, in exact order

Style Guide

Casual Dress

The dress code for Keeneland’s General Admission, Grandstand Seating, and the Equestrian Room is casual, and denim is permitted in all these locations. You can find spectators sporting all kinds of outfit choices, from jeans and a jacket to floral sundresses with 6 inch heels. Since some of the spring meet race days can still be a bit chilly, and it always seems to be colder at the track, we recommend bringing a jacket or sweater with you, even if you don’t think you’ll need one!

Keeneland is always a good excuse to dress up, and who doesn’t love to get a little dolled up every once in a while? Of course, some of the classic looks for men include khakis or chinos with a button down, or for the ladies, a nice sundress or cute maxi. Trust us; though the dress code says “casual,” you’ll see plenty of Lilly Pulitzer and Tuckernuck. Just make sure to wear shoes you’ll be comfortable walking around in all day, or you’ll be spitting the bit before you even get to race 4.

DILLARD’S @ NIKLINIO KEENELAND TUCKERNUCK TEGGY FRENCH KEENELAND TUCKERNUCK

Business Casual

The Phoenix Room overlooks Keeneland’s picturesque Paddock, and offers a business casual setting with plated lunch and cocktail service for your day at the races.

For the gentleman, this means dress pants and a dress shirt with a collar, along with dress shoes and socks. For example, we recommend a pair of slim fit dress pants with a collared button-up and a sport coat or blazer. Pair with some classic Oxfords or Chukkas and you’ll be ready to place your bets!

On the other hand, ladies can wear skirts, dresses, dress pants, or a boss-lady pantsuit. Carl Meyers, Olive You, Bella Rose, and Cotton Patch are just some of the boutiques where you can find the perfect option for your next visit to Keeneland.

Keep in mind that you can be turned away for not adhering to the dress code in the Phoenix Room, so stay away from jeans, shorts, rompers, or revealing attire.

Business Formal

Keeneland’s Lexington/Kentucky Dining Room is formal dining on the 4th floor overlooking the track, allowing guests to see the horses as they run the final stretch to the finish line. The Lexington Room’s dress code is similar to the Phoenix Room’s, but takes it up a step to business formal. You can often find gentlemen wearing suits or women in dresses or maxi skirts.

The corporate boxes, also located on the fourth floor, require coat and tie for the gents and dresses, dress pants or jumpsuits are a must for the ladies. There is a strict “no denim” rule in all of the business formal areas – assume this also means no chambray.

If you’re lucky enough to be a guest in the Keeneland Clubhouse that opens to the Club Lawn in front of the track, be sure to stick to the dress code. Gentlemen, suits or a sport coat, dress pants, and dress shirts with collars and a tie are required, while women’s dress includes dresses, skirts, tailored pantsuits, and dress slacks. •

“Serving as chair for the 2018 Go Red for Women campaign in Central Kentucky, I became aware that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in America, claiming a life every 80 seconds, which is more than all forms of cancer combined. Heart disease has also hit close to home for me and my family. My dad had congestive heart failure and he and his dad both died of aortic aneurysms, and my grandmother also endured challenges from heart disease.

In 2019, I was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia and now take heart medication daily. I have a passion for the work of the American Heart Association and am happy to work alongside incredible folks from across the country to help spread the awareness LOVE.”

“I lost my mother when I was 12, and my grandmother took my sister and I in to raise us. She was diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, aortic valve stenosis, and heart failure, resulting in surgeries and other challenges. She worked hard and was the epitome of the kind of woman who put everyone before herself, often at her expense. In 2019, my commitment to raising awareness about heart health became more significant after I gave birth to my daughter. Women often wear many hats, and our health suffers. I’d love to see women have a better balance. Being a Woman of Impact helps me not only take action myself, but I also get an opportunity to share my story and challenge you to do the same thing.”

Go Red for Women was born as a campaign to raise awareness among women about their greatest health threat — heart disease. Slowly, the campaign grew into a movement bringing together thousands of women. Go Red for Women is a trusted, passionate force for change. It provides a platform for women and their families to lead healthier lives and transform communities. Our team is focused on preventing heart disease and stroke. We’re promoting healthy lifestyles, building awareness, and raising critically needed funds to support research and education initiatives.”

“In 2014, my parents headed to Mexico for vacation. My dad thought he had food poisoning, but there’s a long story involving heart damage, a family member getting him a Medivac flight and into the care of a heart doctor, surgery, weeks of recovery, and a cardiac ablation and pacemaker. After all that, he survived. My husband’s dad had his first heart attack at 48, and my mom’s mother was taken by a stroke after only being in our lives for a few years. My connection to the AHA in my professional life began when I joined Laura’s Lean Beef. Our Laura’s Lean Beef brand is known for being Heart-Check Certified, which is perfect for people hoping to keep beef in their diet and still be heart healthy.”

“I am a stroke survivor. I survived. TWICE. Stroke kills more than 137,000 people a year. That’s about 1 of every 18 deaths. On average, someone dies of stroke every four minutes. Only about 40 percent of stroke deaths occur in males, while 60 percent occur in females. And on top of that, 1 in 3 women will die from heart-related issues. That’s why I’m raising muchneeded funds for the American Heart Association and working to improve the health of our communities. We hope you will join us on our mission because about 80% of these diseases can be prevented.”

“The issue of heart health for women is deeply personal for me. I was born with a hole in my heart and spent most of my childhood years in and out of hospitals. Thankfully, with modern medicine and my parents’ determination to nurse me to health, my heart healed, and I have been able to live well into adulthood. I am aware that my heart’s complications can return anytime, so I am committed to treating each day as a blessing and not taking life and health for granted. I’m honored to be nominated for Go Red for Women’s Woman of Impact campaign. It’s about providing opportunities for women to take charge of their health, building communities that support access to healthy choices, demanding equal access to health care for all women and their families, and increasing women in STEM in upcoming generations. The time is now. Women are leaning into the idea that when we take a stand, commit, and work together, real change is possible.”

“In 2020, I had a minor surgery and found out I was a Type 2 Diabetic. I developed high blood pressure and was diagnosed with Diastolic Dysfunction, which occurs when your lower heart chambers don’t relax. My grandmother died of congestive heart failure. I didn’t want this to be my story, so I knew I had to make some changes. In 2021, I underwent weight loss surgery and lost over 60 pounds. Now, I’m no longer on diabetic medication and my blood pressure medication dosage has been lowered. I chose to live, and it’s made the biggest difference in how I feel about myself. My goal is to make everyone aware of how serious heart disease is and encourage people to live a heart healthy life.”

“I am on a mission to stop stroke and help those who have already been affected by it. As a stroke nurse, I have seen firsthand how lives are thrown into upheaval in an instant due to a stroke. While medical intervention, expert therapy, and supportive resources can restore quality of life, stroke remains the number one cause of disability in the United States. The impact of that disability ripples throughout the family and community. Women across all age and racial demographics have worse outcomes than men for stroke. We don’t know why. That research needs to be done. I joined the Woman of Impact campaign to raise funds and erase health disparities.”

LEXINGTON BLACK PROSPERITY INITIATIVE

Black Leadship Awds

“Progress means change, and the Lexington Black Prosperity Initiative is recognizing Black community members who are leading that change,” explains the team behind the Black Leadership Awards.

This award was initiated by the Blue Grass Community Foundation’s Lexington Black Prosperity Initiative in 2021 to recognize and invest in individuals who are on the frontlines leading the vital work of addressing racial equity, disparities in the Black community, and social justice across Lexington. Award winners received an unrestricted stipend of $5,000 in recognition of their efforts at the grassroots level to affect change in our community.

“The Lexington Black Prosperity Initiative is honored to recognize these grassroots leaders who are addressing racial equity, disparities in the Black community and social justice across Lexington,” said Dr. Tiffany Daniels, D.C., LPBI advisory board co-chair.

“These unsung heroes don’t operate within silos nor do they work through traditional channels of solving problems,” said Lisa Higgins-Hord, Lexington Black Prosperity Initiative co-chair. “They don’t think outside the box because they never knew there was one. Their drive and determination overrode this standard phrase. We consider them to be our uniters, change agents and community innovators. They remind us that greatness is available to anyone who wants to access it.”

We’re highlighting some of the winners from 2021 and 2022! Follow the Blue Grass Community Foundation for more information about future honorees: bgcf.org or @bgcfky

Coen’s Kentucky Return

Liam Coen missed being part of the Southeastern Conference. He missed being the primary play caller. However, more than anything, Coen and his wife, Ashley, just missed Lexington. He was Kentucky’s offensive coordinator during the 10-win 2021 season before returning to the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams last season. Given a chance to return to UK as offensive coordinator again, Coen and his wife knew that was the right move for them.

“We missed the heck out of that place. There’s a lot of aspects that go into making a decision like this, or starting to think about the reality of potentially coming back to Lexington and coming back to Kentucky but the culture and personality fit is just right for us here,” Coen said.

Coen missed being out in Lexington and having Kentucky fans talk to him about the Cats and share their support. “Walking around town and seeing and talking to fans is cool and I like being a part of that,” Coen said.

He also liked the idea of being closer to family on the east coast. “My dad did not get out to California too much. Having him around is good for me and my wife,” the UK coach said. “Being closer to people you care about is important.” Obviously he has a unique relationship with Stoops but he says a “huge part” of returning was relationships he had with other staff members. “I am really excited to be working with the whole offensive staff and other personnel here at Kentucky again. Those relationships are special,” Coen said.

Coen used transfers Will Levis and Wan’Dale Robinson to rejuvenate the Kentucky offense. Now Kentucky is bringing in North Carolina State transfer Devin Leary as a potential starting quarterback this season and Levis let Leary know he would be in good hands playing for Coen.

“He kind of just shot me a little text saying like, ‘Dude, if there’s any coach in the country that can develop quarterbacks it’s Coach Coen.’ It was really helpful,” Leary said.

Coen knows Kentucky fans have big expectations with his return to go with the arrival of Leary and return of young star receivers Barion Brown and Dane Key. However, he says not to expect the 2023 offense to look exactly like the 2021 UK offense.

“The core foundation, beliefs (and) the standards at which we want to operate on a day-to-day basis, those will be the same,” Coen said. “Some of the older offensive players that are coming back, a lot of those guys can help bridge the gap in terms of communication with the way we are going to do things.”

Coen has wasted no time trying to bring more top tier talent to Kentucky rejoining the UK staff in January. The Cats have had a bevy of talented sophomores and juniors on campus and the Coen influence was obvious.

Four-star sophomore quarterback Ryan Montgomery of Ohio has over 20 scholarship offers, including Ohio State and Georgia, but his father, Mike, said he “ate up” a 45-minute film session Coen did with offensive recruits where he show LA Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford running a play and then showed Levis running the sam play at UK in 2021.

“He (Coen) said, ‘If you want to go to the pros, we get you ready for that,’” Mike Montgomery said. “We have met a lot of people (coaches). He (Coen) is about as impressive as anybody with his personality and knowledge. Coen is a game changer for Kentucky.”
