FOSTERING CHILDREN & THE HOPE FOR THIS CAUSE Writer / Janet C. Striebel Photographer / Brian Brosmer

The Geist Mom of the Year contest is a way to highlight all the wonderful moms in our community. It’s not about a competition between candidates so much as it is a great reason to focus on those who make a difference in the lives of our children. All the applicants are exceptional mothers, but your votes have determined one worthy winner. The 2015 Geist Mom of the Year is April Cantrell. “I don’t feel worthy of this award,” says April. “I feel there are a lot of great moms out there. I am passionate about this cause of fostering and adopting children in need and what it represents.” April was nominated by her husband, Paul

Cantrell, who has always supported his wife’s beliefs since the beginning. This is what he wrote for his nomination: April has dedicated her life to her kids, like many moms out there. But since April was a teenager, she knew she didn’t want to have her own kids but wanted to adopt kids who needed a family. Since ‘that time,’ she and her husband have adopted two children through the foster care system and are currently foster-parenting an 8-monthold sweet baby girl who may return to her birth parents or may need an adoptive home. Regardless of the outcome, April is treating the baby as if it is her own and is doing everything she can to make sure the baby has the best upbringing possible.

the world that need good, loving homes, so I knew it was more important for me to help those already in need rather than creating my own.” She doesn’t recall the exact spark that formed this belief, though she says one of her closest friends was adopted, and she would listen to her stories. She adds, “I remember that I saw a lot of kids that didn’t have a good home life like I had, and I remember how sad it made me to see it. My mom had a big heart and would help some of them by having them over and such.”

Her noble and selfless desire is one which is difficult for many to fathom. Most people are eager to procreate in order to see their reflection through their offspring. Unfortunately, there are many children in need already born within our world. “Ever since I was in eighth grade, I knew I Too many innocent children are without wanted to adopt rather than have my own parents who can care for them due to kids,” says April who grew up in Lafayette, Indiana. “I felt very passionate about the fact hardships such as drug addictions, financial constraints and mental illnesses. that there are already so many children in atGeist.com / MAY 2015 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 9

“I don’t feel worthy of this award. I feel there are a lot of great moms out there. I am passionate about this cause of fostering and adopting children in need and what it represents.” - April Cantrell -

“I was familiar with private adoptions, but my heart was set on adopting through the foster care system because I felt there was a stronger need for helping these children,” says April. “My mother admired my decision but thought I would change my mind when I got older. But my mind was set, and I knew that was my calling.” April met her husband, Paul, at Purdue University when she was just a freshman, and he was a sophomore. They have been together ever since. As they began to become more serious, she told him about her feelings on fostering and adopting, and he was completely fine with it. She says, “I’m very blessed to have such a wonderful supportive husband.” Soon after getting married, April and Paul moved to southern California and became licensed foster parents. “Paul mentioned to me that they would

like to adopt instead of having their own children,” says Doris Cantrell, Paul’s mother. “I never questioned it. I think it’s wonderful, and I have supported it from the start.”

April and Paul always go out of their way to make their adopted children feel extra special. For instance, they always celebrate the adoption anniversary with their children, so that they can have two birthday parties.

EXTENDING THEIR ROOTS BACK TO INDIANA

“She is amazing, and we have loved bonding with her and watching her grow over this time,” says April. “We realized pretty quickly that it was going to be very difficult emotionally if and when the time came for her to go back to her parents, especially once we learned that the first opportunity

for them to get her back would not be for almost a year.” While having her for the last five months, the Cantrells have taken her to visit her birth parents once or twice a week on a regular basis.

After moving back to their home state of Indiana, they decided to become licensed foster parents in Hamilton County. Their first foster placement was with three sisters all under 4 years old. They ended up being placed with a family member. April recalls, “Although our time with them was short, and they were too young to remember us, we feel we have made an impact on them and showed them what a stable loving life is like.” Shortly thereafter, they had a similar situation with two young boys who were brothers. One was 3 years old, and the other was 5 weeks old. They stayed for only three weeks until family members came forward.

Proven expertise for uncertain markets.

Paul wrote a touching message on his Facebook page about his experience with his two young boys: “As I sit here holding my 5-week-old and 3-year-old foster children, I realize they see me only as their protector and guardian for the night and have no idea my skin color is different than theirs.” April and Paul have never cared what race the children were that they fostered or adopted. April says, “I’ve always felt that God chooses them for me.”

A FUTURE OF HOPE

In December, the Cantrells received a call from their social worker that a 5-month-old baby girl needed an emergency placement as she had just been removed from her parents. They didn’t know the details at that time. This beautiful girl is named Shawn.

It doesn’t matter

When asked about the hardest part of being a foster parent, April responded: “For me, the hardest thing about being a foster parent is that I become very attached to the children

and often don’t know if or when the child will leave our home. I used to think I could mentally prepare myself for it, but I finally realized that no matter how hard I tried to prepare myself for them leaving, it would never change the heartbreak in the end. “It’s impossible to not get attached to these children because you put your heart and soul into raising and nurturing them while they are with you. So I quit dwelling on it and lived every day as if the children were my own. Also to help me deal with it all, I always remind myself that we are making a difference in their lives no matter how long they are with us.” Janet C. KIDS TRI FOR KIDS: A TRIATHLON SERIES FOR KIDS!

Writer / Kara Reibel

Swim. Bike. Run. This is what a typical summer day looks like for most kids. Thanks to a special series of triathlons for children ages 7-14, these three beloved activities are combined for a fun fundraising athletic event series. Since 2008, Kids TRI for Kids has raised money for Indianapolis area kids’ charities such as Best Buddies.

An IU swimmer turned triathlete, Ian is the reigning champion of the USA Triathlon College Nationals. He was one of two athletes from Indiana.

The first triathlons for children were run by Ed Merkling, assistant director of the Natatorium at IUPUI. Merkling coaches the Jaguar Aquatics swim team in addition to running camps and programs for kids at the Natatorium. When the idea for Kids TRI for Kids was evolving, Merkling was immediately brought into the conversation. With their first fundraising triathlon held at the Jordan YMCA in 2008, the popularity of the triathlon series immediately took off. This summer, the first two races had over 250 entries, a 20 percent increase over last year. “Not every kid is an elite athlete, but what I love is seeing the kid with streamers flowing off the handles of their bike,” says Merkling. These kids know how to keep it fun.

Mideast Regional Youth Development Coordinator, “We continue to marvel at your organization [Kids TRI for Kids] and the growth of your programs. We are pleased to be a small part of your success on behalf of our youth.” Kids TRI for Kids is on the cutting edge of a new and huge phenomenon, especially with it becoming a new Olympic sport! Events such as Kids TRI for Kids encourages the kids to aspire to elite athlete levels and, at the bare minimum, to have fun. The American Dairy Association has been a generous sponsor through their “Winners Drink Milk” campaign encompassing the winners of each age group for Kids TRI for Kids. The winner drinks chocolate milk (rehabilitation drink of choice) out of a milk bottle, replicating the winner’s consumption at the Indy 500.

The true success of these events and the vision of Kids TRI for Kids comes from its incredibly talented and dedicated Board and volunteers. All of these people share a common thread: they all believe in the participants’ abilities, whether the kids know this about themselves or not. All of these people inspire and already see the greatness in the participant. They see potential. There is nothing more important to them than the positive experience that a kid will take away from an event. It’s not about competition, it’s not about winning. These kids are all winners already and should feel that way when they cross the finish line.

NEW MEDICAL DIRECTOR FOR THE GEIST HALF Writer / Janet C. Striebel . Photographer / Brian Brosmer

The medical needs of runners competing in the 2015 St.Vincent Geist Half Marathon, 10K and 5K have been preconceived long before the race begins. The safety management of runners has been researched and analyzed meticulously by a local physician here in Fishers. From the weather conditions to the projected numbers of the race, someone has already planned and organized for the proper routine as well as emergency care of athletes. This someone is Dr. Dan Ordaz—the new medical director of the Geist Half Marathon. “As the Medical Director, Dr. Ordaz coordinates the staff, equipment and supplies for seven stationary first aid stations, five ambulances and five medical carts,” said Steve Bingham-Hawk, race

director of Geist Half Marathon. “It’s a huge job, and he does it with grace and determination. His contributions are invaluable in our efforts to ensure each and every one of our participants crosses the finish line safely.” As an avid runner and endurance athlete himself, Ordaz has a sincere interest in evaluating and treating running injuries. Instead of running the race this year, he will be found in the medical tent located by the finish line. Ordaz is a Sports Medicine Physician with St.Vincent Sports Performance and works at the new office at St.Vincent Fishers. The organization employs seven sports medicine physicians across three central Indiana facilities.

These physicians diagnose, treat and manage non-operative musculoskeletal sports-related injuries, including overuse injuries, fractures and concussions. “Of all the sports injuries that occur, a very low percentage of them actually require surgery,” said Ordaz. “If in the event surgery is needed, then we can get these patients in the right hands.” The sports medicine physicians at St.Vincent Fishers treat patients of all ages with orthopedic and sports-related injuries including concussions. The athletic trainers as the ancillary staff provide necessary exercises to do at home, crutches and/or casts when needed. Further, they have the resources available such as strength conditioning specialists, sports psychologists and a sports dietitian to meet the needs and goals of each of their patients.

This team approach of networking and having our special modalities all on the same page is invaluable.” Ordaz admits he is looking forward to race day. He’s ready to

LOCAL FOOTBALL TEAMS VOLUNTEERING AT GEIST HALF Writer / Janet C. Striebel

Some of our local high school football teams are coming together to help at the 2015 St.Vincent Geist Marathon. These teams are from Fishers High School, Lawrence Central High School, Lawrence North High School and Warren Central High School. Although they may dress in full gear and compete against each other during football season, they will unite together on Saturday, May 16, to volunteer their time as course marshals. “Course marshals are crucial during the race,” said Aprill M. Shelburne, executive director of St.Vincent Geist Marathon. “We need to recruit over 100 course marshals to help keep our runners safe. Fortunately, many of our local football teams help alleviate the stress of recruiting volunteer marshals by stepping up to take on those critical responsibilities.” The role of a course marshal is multidimensional. First, they are safety officers as they are positioned throughout the course usually at intersections and are responsible for directing runners at turns. Second, they help keep runners on course. Third, they are traffic cops, keeping cars off the course and maintaining a safe environment for runners. Finally, they are like cheerleaders in the way that they help cheer the runners on and help motivate them during this long race. “We’ve helped volunteer for the last four or five years at the Geist Marathon,” said Rick Wimmer, head varsity football coach at Fishers High School. “This provides an opportunity for our guys to give back to the community. Also the money raised helps schools in our area.”

FISHERS HIGH SCHOOL

LAWRENCE CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL

Wimmer mentions other ways his Fishers team gives back such as with the “Polar Plunge,” an annual event that helps raise money for Special Olympics by finding sponsors for players as they plunge into freezing water. Wimmer says that this event is planned by Pat Schooley, who was an assistant coach for six years and truly dedicated to organizing this event for the past eight years. “I run in the Geist Marathon along with assistant coaches and teachers,” said Wimmer. “It’s fun to see our kids along the course, cheering us on. I always look forward to it.” The football team at Lawrence Central is active in assisting literacy across the township on many evenings for elementary schools. Also they help with STEM and ISTEP Preparation. “Our core value here is ‘Be a giver, not a taker,’” said Jed Richman, head varsity football coach at Lawrence Central High School. Richman has teamed up with Will Patterson, who helps lead community outreach. Patterson is also the head boys track coach and head junior varsity/linebacker football coach. “Much of our service-focus is driven by a need in our own backyard,” said Richman who admires how his team has benefited from helping elementary kids learn to read. He says that as much as the players are giving, they’re getting back so much more in return because they realize what important role models they are to the younger kids who idolize them. “There are a lot of great kids at Lawrence Central that deserve the credit, not me,” Richman said. “I’m just blessed to coach them.” The football and boys track teams at Lawrence North also help volunteer at the Geist Marathon. They help their community in various ways. The Wildcat Football Parent Club along with athletes developed the “Coach Patrick Mallory Pay-It-Forward Program,” which aids in collecting school supplies, raising money and awareness for breast cancer, holding multiple food drives supporting their in-house “And Go Cats Food Pantry,” and a toy drive during the holidays benefiting kids around different communities. In addition to the Geist Half, these athletes volunteer their time with the “Unite and Ignite 5K Fun Run” along with the Lawrence Township Education Foundation. “Our main focus is how we branch out to help kids not only in Lawrence but in other communities as well,” said Pat Mallory, head football and boys track and field coach at Lawrence North High School. “If we help to develop a well-rounded educational experience, then that provides help not only for our kids today but also for the future. I believe we need to help the educational

process from the earliest years which will ultimately influence our community for years to come.” The Warren Central football players also help serve their community. Beyond reading to elementary students during the season, they also help in the off-season.

only for their schools but within their community as well. Each team may have a different approach to how they help or even why, but they all share the concept of giving of themselves as they tackle the needs of others in order to improve our society.

LAWRENCE NORTH HIGH SCHOOL

“Anytime we can build relations outside of school and football and give back to the community, it really pays dividends in the fall,” said Ryan Barclay, social studies teacher and assistant varsity football coach at Warren Central High School. Barclay and his friend, Simon Lee, another assistant coach, help serve as philanthropic liaisons between their Warren football team and community. Together they organize opportunities for volunteering such as “Pride of the East Side” where they help clean trash around the community and “Polar Plunge.”

WARREN CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL

Barclay adds, “Having our team volunteer in the community is like depositing into an emotional bank. You’re establishing a bond that really binds these kids together a long way when it becomes crunch time in the fall.” These four football teams deserve credit for all that they do, not

THE GEIST HALF IS ONE WAY TO CELEBRATE A BIRTHDAY Writer / Kara Reibel

For Fishers resident John Hoopes, participating in the Geist Half is the best way to celebrate his birthday. Some people celebrate their birthdays by going out to dinner or having cake and ice cream with family and friends, and while that may be part of the birthday weekend plan, Hoopes is celebrating his birthday with 2,500 people. All of these people will be participating in the Geist Half alongside him, unknowingly helping to lift him along with moral support in crossing the finish line on his 71st birthday.

Ohio our entire lives until the move to For more information on how you can be Fishers,” shares Linda. “We thought we would involved with the Geist Half, please visit be here for five or so years and then move geisthalf.com. back, but as we were looking to sell our home and exploring living options in Ohio, we came to the realization that we love it here.” The couple completed the inaugural Geist Half and keep active in retirement with walking, yoga, gardening and visiting their 11 grandchildren. “We live in Britton Falls, a Del Webb community, and absolutely love it,” says Linda. The community fits their active lifestyle.

Hoopes and his wife, Linda, moved to Fishers Perhaps Linda will be at the finish line with 11 years ago for her job. “We had lived in a birthday cake for John.

With the May 22 grand opening of retailer Weekends Only, Indianapolisarea shoppers will have a new option for buying furniture. As its name implies, the St. Louis-based furniture and mattress store takes a unique approach by opening for business on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (and special holidays) only. Company President Lane Hamm says that the concept of weekendonly shopping came from analyzing customer traffic patterns at one of its original St. Louis-area stores. Up to 80 percent of its business consistently transpired over the threeday weekend period. In an effort to decrease overhead and compete on price, management opted to limit store operations to weekend hours only and pass along the savings to its customers. The family-owned retailer launched its first Weekends Only concept store in 1997 and grew to five area locations in less than 10 years. Expanding to the Indianapolis market made a lot of sense, says President Tom Phillips. “We fell in love with the city. It has similar Midwest values, a stable, growing economy and great people.” Proximity to the St. Louis distribution center made Indianapolis an appealing option. Fishers resident and longtime furniture business executive David Gerdt has been named General Manager In Training of the new Indianapolis store. The company promotes its competitive, low price points on

first-quality and brand name furniture. They secure the deals, says Hamm, by working directly with manufacturers and by scouting for closeouts, overstocks and one-of-a-kind deals. When a brand name product is too pricey, the retailer looks for a similar item with the same or better quality and stocks it, priced to sell. The approach gives buyers bigger assortment and constantly changing online and in-store inventory. Some of the best deals are found on the Weekends Only website where shoppers can find online and in-store specials. It’s a kind of “get it while you can” approach to the shopping experience. According to the store’s own research, more than half of Weekends Only customers tend to pick up their furniture themselves rather than paying for delivery. Part of the Indianapolis store construction will include a spacious canopy on the east side of the building to serve as a loading zone for transport-it-yourself customers.

AVOIDING SECURITY DEPOSIT BLUES Writer / Jeffrey Heinzmann

Do you have a rental property in an Indiana college town that you lease to students for the year? Do you have children in college renting off-campus housing that they’ll soon be vacating after the school year to return home, head to a summer job, travel or join the “real world” workforce? If you are on either side of this equation, it’s important to remember to protect your interest regarding the security deposit that was probably paid as part of the lease.

due for early termination of the lease if the lease provided for the last payment of rent, and utility or sewer charges the tenant was responsible for but failed to pay.

If the landlord fails to return the deposit or fails to provide an itemized statement that includes item-by-item estimated costs along

Tenants, your lease likely has terms regarding termination, like when to give notice that you will be leaving and your obligations regarding cleaning and maintenance. What’s important for the security deposit return is that you provide the landlord with your forwarding address in writing. Once that is done, the landlord will have 45 days from the date you provided the address or the date you surrendered possession of the property and terminated the tenancy to return or account for the security deposit. Landlords, you took that security deposit to protect yourself. If you do not handle it properly, you could lose not only the right to claim damages against the deposit, but also attorney fees for an effort by your former tenant to recover the deposit. Once the tenancy has ended and the tenant has provided you with a forwarding address, you have 45 days to return the deposit or to send an itemized statement listing all damages claimed for which the deposit may be used. You must include the estimated cost of repair for each damaged item, along with a check or money order for any remaining amount of the deposit, if any. A landlord may only apply the security deposit to certain damages. Allowable damages include actual damages to the rental unit or any ancillary facility that are not the result of normal wear and tear (the lease might proactively identify some of these damages, including painting, carpet cleaning, etc.), delinquent rent, rent TownePost.com / MAY 2015 / TOWNEPOST NETWORK

with any remainder of the deposit to the tenant within 45 days, then the tenant may bring an action (likely in small claims court) against the landlord for the entire deposit plus attorney’s fees. Jeffrey Heinzmann is an attorney with Heinzmann Law Office, heinzmannlaw.com.

As the season turns, so do our daydreams— perhaps to leisurely weekends by the pool or swimming laps under the hot summer sun. If you’re daydreaming of the perfect poolside weekend, your answer may be a world-class pool manufacturer just down the road in Fortville. Thursday Pools is an innovative fiberglass pool manufacturer making a big international splash. Thursday Pools manufactures one piece

in-ground fiberglass swimming pool shells out of its 25,000 square foot, ultraefficient facility in Fortville, Indiana. With over 30 years of fiberglass manufacturing experience, Thursday Pools has been channeling their fiberglass expertise into the swimming pool industry. Their vision is simple—to set the standard for high quality fiberglass swimming pools. After a brief exploration of Thursday Pools, it is clear that they are living this simple vision and truly changing their industry.

TOWNEPOST NETWORK / MAY 2015 / TownePost.com

The overarching theme of Thursday Pools’ innovation is in a system they’ve developed that allows a fiberglass pool to be safely drained and still maintain a valid structural warranty. According to CFO and Co-Founder Bill Khamis, fiberglass pools are much easier to maintain, require less chemicals to maintain and are faster to install. Fiberglass pools manufactured by Thursday Pools are equipped with two patent-pending technologies, the Geo-Hydro Valve™ and the Geo-Anchor Pool Wall™.

Thursday Pools staff at their Fortville, Indiana headquarters.

Together, these technologies are known as the Fiberglass Pool Anchoring System™. This system addresses two common concerns with in-ground fiberglass pools: pool floating and bulging walls. The Fiberglass Pool Anchoring System™ innovated by Thursday Pools is revolutionizing fiberglass pool construction, according to Office Manager Anne Davis who gave me an amazing tour of their world-class facility.

30th Anniversary Sale Remarkable Syle & Selection | Incredible Quality & Comfort Outstanding Designers & Customer Service

Another shining aspect of Thursday Pools’ processes is that all of their materials come from North America— quality and safety are far more important to Thursday Pools than costs and profitability. This commitment to quality and safety is a key element of their rapid success, success that is evident through their extensive North American presence and in their current facility expansion project. So what factors should you consider when planning your new backyard paradise? While a lot of things come into play throughout the process, Khamis believes the most important factor is purpose. “Are you going to use it for swimming or backyard parties? Your pool’s intended purpose is an important factor to consider,” he said. No matter where your passion for poolside leisure comes from, Thursday Pools is innovating a fiberglass solution. Making a Garden Out of the Ashes Writer / Marcia Vigren . Photographer / Izzybug Photography

Walk into the home sitting confidently on the hill in the estate known at Geist Nursery, and you enter a contrast of new and old, tragic and inspiring, loss and gain. So too are the lives that inhabit this building. Meet Andrew and Whitney Klein. They live and work here along with Whitney’s parents, Fred and Sarah Richwine, who own the property and the landscape business. The home is believed to have been the Mollenkopf property back in the late 1800s and was lovingly restored by Fred after he acquired it in 1977. All of this effort was lost when it suffered a tragic electrical fire in December 2010, burning all but one small section to the ground. The grief of losing their valuables, sentimental items and two pets wore off when they realized how blessed they were to escape the fire alive. They started to rebuild, keeping the general home structure similar to the old one, but adding improvements like a basement. Now, with the old surviving section as the

entryway, the new house is fresh, beautiful and historic, all in one.

protects the nerves is attacked by a person’s own antibodies.

Like the house, Andrew and Whitney have suffered their share of setbacks but have rebuilt and improved. They were living the American Dream in Broad Ripple with Andrew working as an executive sushi chef at Kona Grill and Whitney working at Geist Nursery and the Indiana Repertory Theatre. Then, in 2009, while preparing for Kona’s presence at Zoobilation, Andrew had numbness in his hands, tingles in his legs and severe back pain. One day, he suddenly had trouble keeping his balance and walking. He was told that he should go home, but on the way to his car, he was stopped by police who told him that he wasn’t fit to drive, thinking he’d had too much to drink. The next morning, he couldn’t feel his feet or legs and certainly couldn’t walk. Two weeks of tests in the hospital confirmed that Andrew had Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a neurological disorder in which the myelin sheath that

“When I was in the hospital, the first neurologist came in and told me I’d never walk again. I stared her straight in the face and said, ‘You get out of here and send me a different doctor,’” said Andrew. “Dr. Stroble came in and said, ‘I like your attitude,’ and started me on physical therapy. The beginning of therapy was just trying to get my baby toe to move. Finally it twitched, and then I tried to get the second to move.” He stayed in the hospital another two-and-ahalf months, working longer and harder than most in physical therapy until he was able to walk again. Andrew accomplished rising from being bedridden to using a wheelchair to walking out of the hospital with a walker in a short three months. He credits the support of his family, friends and parents, Gina and John Klein, who moved back from Florida to help with his recovery.

This gratitude led them both to walk in the MS Walk, held in April, for the last five years. That’s right, Andrew walks for this cause. “MS doesn’t define me,” he said. “I define my MS.” Whitney, who grew up in the house, and Andrew believe this was all part of the bigger plan. “Our path led us here,” said Whitney. “We moved to Colorado and moved back here. We tried to open a sushi restaurant in Broad Ripple and then moved back here. We roll with it and look for the good.” Andrew and Whitney seem to work together as one unit, along with Whitney’s parents. Their businesses are well run because of the special complementary talents they each possess. Fred owns the landscaping business and garden center and brings years of experience along with a quality work ethic. Whitney has a design background that lends itself to decorating the barn for weddings and reorganizing the garden center to give it some “street presence.” Her brilliant mind and hospitable nature are invaluable in all aspects of the business. Andrew, who taps into the 25 years of his family’s catering and restaurant experience, has the culinary skills to prepare quality meals for all occasions made from his own garden. They all live together in the house, sharing babysitting, chores and handyman duties.

He was “rebuilding after the fire.” After suffering a relapse in May 2014 from the stress of then being the executive sous chef at Flemings, Andrew decided, with much coaxing from his neurologist, to leave his job. After three months of recovery, he decided to start his own catering company, and No Coast Cuisine was born. They cater corporate lunches, private dinners, events and weddings and even provide wellness cooking for those with illness or special dietary needs. To couple that, they started hosting more weddings on the property with beautiful, shabby chic country receptions in the barn. His most recent labor of love is renovating the 1973 Airstream trailer he acquired to make it an “onsite-catering kitchen.” They may even go so far as to one day participate in First Friday Food Trucks. Like the fire, after grieving the loss of the life that he once knew, they all found gratitude in the fact that his form of MS was not progressive but rather “relapse and remitting,” meaning he would suffer relapses but be able to recover from them with some effort. Also they are in awe of the medical advances being made on this illness. For instance, Andrew takes an injection every day that mimics the myelin sheath, decoying the antibodies from attacking his nerves. Mostly, they give thanks for their now 4-year-old son, Levi, they were still able to give birth to after Andrew’s MS diagnosis.

“We decided to pursue this method of religious education to assist families who find it difficult to attend their traditional Sunday services,” says Coordinator of Religious Education Aimee May. “It is designed to provide the same curriculum in a condensed amount of time,” says May. “Two weeks in the summer versus attending every Sunday morning from August to May allows families some flexibility and to not be tied to a particular time for Mass each Sunday.”

At the National Bank of Indianapolis, we’re proud to be the Indianapolis area’s largest locally owned national bank. Our private bankers, our directors, even our shareholders live and work in Greater Indianapolis. Decisions are made locally by people

The classes provide the same grade level material (minus the Sacramental Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist) that is covered in the year-round Sunday classes. Children will participate in the grade level classes for the grade in which the will be entering in the fall.

May says in addition to their religious education curriculum, they are including a liturgical music class in their daily schedule which would provide children the opportunity to learn the music used during their Sunday Mass. The daily schedule with include class instruction, liturgical music class, a snack and break time. Throughout the remainder of the year, families will be invited to attend family events to enhance and support their learning from the summer classes.

“We are very excited about the prospect of offering this new method of religious educations to our families!” says May.
