New West Symphony remembers the Holocaust through its two-part concert series Duet of Remembrance

February 27, 2020 — — 15 by Emily Dodi N ew West Symphony (NWS) presents Duet of Remembrance, a two-concert package dedicated to the remembrance of the Holocaust and the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Nazi concent-ration camps.
“Everyone is part of the continuation of the story. It’s really important,” says Music Director Michael Christie. “It’s amazing, the number of direct survivors and family of survivors who live in Ventura. The history of people’s experiences just within our own community is so moving. We are hoping we can pay some small homage to the experiences that ripple through the generations.”
The first concert, entitled Dreams, takes place at the Fred Kavli Theatre at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Feb. 29, and at Rancho Campana Performing Arts Center in Camarillo on Sunday, Mar. 1. The program includes the children’s opera Brundibár, performed by Los Robles Children’s Choir, and Felix Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, featuring the California Lutheran University Choir, Women’s Chorale and Areté Vocal Ensemble, with actors Brett Elliott and Jane Longenecker of the Kingsmen Shakespeare Company. The children’s opera Brundibár, written by Jewish Czech composer Hans Krása, with an original libretto by Adolf Hoffmeister, tells the story of the children of a small village who rise up against a treacherous bully. The simplicity of the story, and the triumph over adversity it celebrates, belies the opera’s dark and complicated history. Brundibár was originally written in 1938 for a government competition. The competition would ultimately be canceled, but the opera went on to be performed in 1942 by children at the Jewish Orphanage on Belgicka Street in Prague. By 1943, Krása and nearly all of the children from the orphanage (along with many others) were imprisoned at Theresienstadt concentration camp in Terezín. A score of Brundibár was smuggled in, and Krása adapted it for the instruments available there. The opera debuted in September of that year, performed by the children of the camp and directed by František Zelenka, formerly a stage manager at the Czech National Theatre. It would go on to be performed numerous times, including for Red Cross representatives who visited the camp in 1944, and for a Nazi propaganda film. The filmed production would be the last at the camp: Shortly after filming, all participants were sent to Auschwitz; nearly all were gassed upon arrival.
NWS Directors Dana Rouse and Alicia Langness took care in helping the young choir members understand the context and importance of the opera. “You can’t let evil go unchecked. You have to stand together,” says Rouse, who adds that Brundibár is “an important story.” Rouse and Langness emphasized the opera’s overall theme of good conquering evil. “It starts out rather bleak,” says Rouse, “but it ends triumphantly.” She describes the production as a “neat hybrid” of choir performance and theater production, with the children acting out their parts in costume while sharing the stage with the New West Symphony.
Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream represents a triumph over evil, as well. As part of his effort to blot out the contributions and voices of Jewish artists, Adolf Hitler called on the composer Richard Strauss to re-write Mendelssohn’s work. Strauss refused and we are still able to hear the music as Mendelssohn created it, including the very familiar “Wedding March.”
The second concert of the Duet of Remembrance is Violins of Hope, scheduled for April 18-19. Violins of Hope is a collection of instruments that once belonged to Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Each instrument was “lovingly and painstakingly” restored by Israeli luthier Amnon Weinstein and his son Avshalom. Weinstein, whose own family bears the scars of the Holocaust, once said in an interview on National Public Radio that the Violins of Hope are “like tombstones for the thousands of Jewish instruments and musicians destroyed in the war.” “The Violins of Hope are Weinstein’s resistance,” wrote journalist Julie Rose. The Violins of Hope program includes The Diary of Anne Frank Suite by Alfred Newman, as well as Jonathan Leshnoff’s Symphony No. 4 “Heichalos,” which was written especially for the orchestra, and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. As an entr’acte, the orchestra will play Grazyna Bacewicz’s Concerto for String Orchestra (Allegro), which NWS describes as “a brief contemporary piece you may never hear anywhere else.” Michael Christie conducts, with Olga Kern on the piano.
With more music and meaning for just one concert, the Duet of Remembrance recalls one of the darkest times in our history while shining a light of hope in a way that only music can. ♦ Dreams will be performed on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at Fred Kavli Theatre at the Bank of American Performing Arts Center, 2100 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks; and on Sunday, March 1, at 3 p.m. at Rancho Campaña Performing Arts Center, 4235 Mar Vista Drive, Camarillo. Violins of Hope will be performed April 18-19. For tickets and more information, call 805-497-5800 or visit newwestsymphony.org. The Los Robles Children’s Choir will perform Brundibár during New West Symphony’s Dreams concert. Quincy Street LTD 2405 Roosevelt Blvd., Oxnard 805-984-6262 quincystreetltd.com $2.95 - $33.95 I’ ve lived in the Channel Islands Harbor area for eight years and I never knew about this local restaurant two minutes from my apartment: Quincy Street in Silver Strand Beach, a popular spot that has been going strong for 35 years.
Besides a large selection of cocktails, beer and wine, the website claims that the restaurant is known for homemade barbeque sauce, seafood and pasta dishes. I warn you: Come with a big appetite!
Walking in, it has a country and rustic, warm and inviting feeling to it. I spotted many pictures, jugs, clocks and cans on shelves, and even street signs near the ceiling. It was bustling with locals when three of us arrived at 6:30 p.m. on a Thursday night.
As we browsed the menu, the waitress served us some munchies: a small bowl of carrots and broccoli with ranch dressing and small crostini topped with butter and parmesan cheese.
My friends and I finally decided on a quarter-order of the Onion Brick ($7.95), spaghetti with meat sauce ($14.95) with a side of the “famous” wilted spinach salad ($4.95), half order of the spicy shrimp risotto ($11.98) and a small order of the barbecue baby back ribs ($19.95) with a side of baked beans and coleslaw.
First up, the Onion Brick appetizer. These onions are fresh cut and deep fried in a homemade batter and served with homemade barbeque sauce. Even a quarter order was a lot! The onions were not overly battered and had the perfect amount of crisp to them. Dipping them in the barbecue sauce just added to the flavor. The salad came out next, filled with spinach, fresh bacon bits and grated eggs topped with a sweet and tangy dressing. This is probably the best spinach salad I have ever had, thanks to that dressing and the ingredients being very fresh.
Time for the main dishes! We had substituted spaghetti for a gluten-free penne pasta, which came topped with a homemade meat sauce that tasted light and sweet. It was very hearty from the meat, but it could’ve used some more marinara sauce and grated Romano or parmesan cheese. My friend enjoyed it with a glass of CK Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon ($7) that really brought out the flavor of the sauce.
The spicy shrimp risotto had mushrooms and bell peppers in a creamy sauce. The shrimp was cooked and spiced to perfection and the cheese sauce was thick. This is a must order when you dine! We tried it with the 14 Hands “Hot to Trot” Red Blend ($9).
Finally, my Chicago-style baby back ribs. Ahhh… These ribs fell right off the bone and were so tender. I ate the whole thing and it went great with a glass of Mark West Pinot Noir ($9). The sides of the baked beans had a smoky flavor to them while the coleslaw had a light cream.
Before I left, I asked the waitress why the restaurant is called Quincy Street, seeing that it’s actually located on Roosevelt Boulevard. She did not know, although she mentioned that many celebrities used to dine at the establishment back in the day.
So I started checking with the locals. One said that the original owner’s husband was from Chicago and that there is a well-known street in the city called Quincy Street. Another said the husband was from the Quincy Street District in Michigan. The mystery lives on. ♦ Kateri Wozny is a foodie who loves savoring the latest dishes around the 805. Grisly Bare I hooked up with a really good friend a few times. We both agreed to forget about it to preserve our friendship, but he’s been really distant. I don’t want to be the one to reach out and say something. How do I get things back to normal? — Upset Woman Sure, they say a really good friend is someone who knows everything about you — though, ideally, stopping short of how your sex face is a ringer for a pug having a seizure.
Chances are, this stretch of awkward silence between you has two interconnected causes: 1. “Eek, too much naked!” with somebody who isn’t a romantic partner, and 2. The fog of uncertainty over what sort of relationship you and he now have.
Problem 1, “Eek, too much naked!” comes out of how, when you two “just friends” hooked up, you abruptly and unwittingly vaulted across the boundaries of friendship into romantic territory. Major features of a romantic relationship — an intimate relationship — are vulnerability and openness. We look to find someone we can trust with our most embarrassing flaws and deepest fears, along with other stuff we don’t put out to the world with a bullhorn: “Hey, everybody on this bus, let’s have a chat about what I like in bed!”
Sex tends to feel less like sexual overshare after the fact if it was preceded by some starter romance — talking flirty, lite touchyfeely, making cartoon heart eyes at each other. This stuff signals a transition to a deeper relationship (or at least sincere hopes of one).
However, when we get naked without any romantic prep, our feeling weirded out — overly exposed — probably comes out of our evolved motivation to protect our reputation: our public image, the sort of person others perceive us to be. Back in the harsh, 7-Eleven- and Airbnb-free ancestral environment that shaped the psychology still driving us today, our social survival and, in turn, our physical survival were dependent on whether people believed we were a good person and somebody good to keep around.
Welcome to the origins of our longing for privacy — to keep some info about ourselves out of the public eye (everyone we don’t have intimate relationships with) and to manicure the info we do release. Social psychologist Mark Leary refers to this as “impression management.” Others’ evaluations of us affect how we’re perceived and treated, so, Leary explains, we’re driven to “behave in ways that will create certain impressions in others’ eyes.” Regrettably, it’s difficult to keep up the role of steely image manager while naked and barking like a coked-up elephant seal. Moving on to problem 2, the fog of uncertainty over what sort of relationship you and this guy now have, getting naked together is also a defining act of sorts — or rather, a possibly redefining one. Before you two had sex, your relationship was clearly defined as a friendship. There’s comfort in this sort of clarity. It’s like a sign over a business. When we see “Laundromat,” we know what to expect, and it isn’t Thai takeout or stripper poles, watered-down $20 drinks, and loose glitter.
Right now, there’s probably an uncomfortable question looming over the two of you: Does one want more of a relationship — a romantic relationship — than the other’s up for providing? Psychologist Steven Pinker explains that people get uneasy when they’ve had one type of relationship with somebody — say, a friendship — and they aren’t sure whether that person wants a different type of relationship. A changed relationship has changed terms and behaviors that go with it, and they need to know which set they’re supposed adhere to.
And sure, you do say you both agreed to ditch the sex to preserve the friendship, but people say lots of things, because it’s not like a dude in some control room somewhere gives us an electric shock whenever we tell a lie.
Ask yourself whether you might want more than a friendship. If so, figure out whether you want it enough (and whether it’s possible enough) to risk making it too uncomfortable to remain friends — which could happen.
If friendship is really all you want, you don’t have to “reach out and say something.” In general, guys don’t want to talk about it; they just want life to go on. And there’s your answer. Start asking this guy to do “just friends” things, like hanging out with you and other amigos. To stay on the clothed and narrow, schedule these outings at “just friends” times — in unsexy bright daylight — and in “just friends” locations: places you’d get arrested if you stripped down to “Yo . . . check out the wild birthmark that looks like Lawrence of Arabia crossing my labia on a camel!” ♦ (c)2020, Amy Alkon, all rights reserved. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call, 916- 939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site, www.nationwideposting.com, for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, T.S.# 9550-1479. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse.
