t is well known that Luke Air Force has one of the best honorary commander programs in the Air Force. Honorary commanders are influential individuals within the Phoenix business community who are nominated to be part of the Luke AFB family. After a rigorous review process, the applicants are inducted as honorary commanders to the various squadron, group and wing commanders across Luke AFB. The program’s overall purpose is for the military and honorary commander to reciprocate their organizational cultures to each other. One of the things that makes Luke AFB’s honorary commander program so good is it follows the same guidelines as the military

for its commanders. Typically, at the end of a two-year tenure, military commanders relinquish command. At Luke AFB, the wing commander thanks the honorary commanders for their service and another group of business leaders is inducted. What is left is a group of professionals who have been immersed in Luke AFB’s culture and tradition who want to continue part of the base’s incredible mission. That is where Fighter Country Partnership comes into view. A little over six years ago, a small cadre of former honorary commanders sat down with the Fighter Country Partnership president to discuss the idea of implementing an alumni program. The Blue Blazer Squadron came

to life. The first group, the Alpha Class, was soon inducted. This new “squadron” supports Fighter Country Partnership in its programs that affect the lives of the men, women and families across Luke AFB. Since that day, each year new members are inducted at the Blue Blazer annual meeting, where recently the Delta Class was brought into the organization. There are 100 members. Blue Blazers support Luke AFB through Fighter Country Partnership in a myriad of ways. They helped renovate the Airman’s Attic; mentored enlisted and officers at speed mentoring sessions; and served lunch at the annual Thunderbolt Cup. They are part of the committees for the annual awards and Air Force balls, where they raise tens of thousands of dollars that help make those events truly memorable. Last year, the Back to School Bash was expanded so the children would receive backpacks full of supplies for the upcoming year, along with shoes, shorts and shirts. As the event expanded, so did the need for the Blue Blazer’s support. A call went out and withSEE FCP PAGE 12

wning a pet can lower cholesterol, blood pressure and increase fitness, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study “Healthy Pets, Healthy People.” However, to help keep the owner healthy, the pet has to remain healthy as well. The Luke Air Force Base Veterinary Services clinic helps maintain the health of active-duty members’ and retirees’ pets by performing wellness exams, vaccines, heartworm tests and basic sick-call procedures. Surgical and X-ray procedures aren’t available at the clinic due to limited work space. Although, allergy-related ear infections and skin issues are the most common cases seen at the clinic. The vet clinic has multiple missions to maintain the health of

man’s best friend—cats included. “The primary mission is to take care of the military working dogs,” says Nicole Avci, Luke AFB Veterinary Services clinic officer in charge. “The second mission is actually food for facilities on base. If the establishments fail the inspection, they are no longer allowed to send deliveries to the base or the Department of Defense. “Our next mission is control of zoonotic diseases (examples include rabies and the swine influenza), which are diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans,” Avci says. “We take care of people’s pets, seeing more than 20 per day.” In 2019, the vet clinic treated more than 4,970 privately owned animals, five MWDs, 52 government-owned animals including U.S. Border Patrol, Transportation Security Administration, Customs and U.S. agriculture dogs. Along with treating cats and dogs, the clinic also checks in on guinea pigs at the Child Development Center.

“We’ll inspect them once a year and make sure they’re healthy,” Avci says. “They have to get certified yearly.” The clinic routes health certificates for individuals who are moving and are bringing their pets with them. “There’s always a process involved,” says Kari Reinhart, Luke AFB Veterinary Services clinic operations assistant. “It’s almost always an international microchip and a rabies titer test that’s most important. Different countries have restrictions and regulations on what actions are needed for the health certificate. A certificate within 10 days is required before moving overseas.” The clinic helps keep Luke member’s pets healthy, in turn keeping the troops mentally and physically prepared for anything thrown their way. Helping the Environment Luke AFB’s wastewater plant saves money BY AIRMAN 1ST CLASS LEALA MARQUEZ 56th Fighter Wing Public Affairs

uke’s wastewater plant helps protect the environment from hazards while saving the Air Force money. In 2019 the plant saved Luke approximately $200,000. Base residents, employees and community members in the areas surrounding Luke produce approximately 14 million gallons of wastewater a month, according to Tech. Sgt. George Vollmer, 56th CES wastewater treatment plant noncommissioned officer in charge. With nearly 7,000 employees and more than 6,000 family members, Luke shares the environmental responsibility and uses the 56th Civil Engineer Squadron-operated treatment facility to clean wastewater generated by the base’s population.

“With a large base population, you are going to generate a lot of waste, and it needs to go somewhere,” Vollmer says. “This plant enables us to treat that waste and to return it into the environment without impacting it.” Engineers process the water through five stages of cleaning to re-

move any contaminants. Dave Kudray, 56th CES lead wastewater operator, explained the wastewater goes through pretreatment first to remove larger debris such as rags or grit. Next, the water

passes through anoxic basins and an oxidation ditch to remove nitrates. From there the water moves through a clarifier where septic sludge is separated from the water. Then, the water is processed through a tertiary sand filtration system to remove suspended solids. Lastly, plant operators use ultraviolet lights to sterilize the water, eliminating E. coli and other bacteria. “Water takes approximately 18 hours to go from the influent of plant to effluent of plant,” Kudray says. “We treat an average of 400,000 gallons a day.” When the treatment process is complete, the system guides the clean water to pond for future use. “(It’s used) as reclaimed water on all the grass areas on Luke AFB and Falcon Dunes Golf Course or the Agua Fria,” Kudray says. Cleaning wastewater from the base is not only environmentally friendly, but it also helps save money. “Last year, we saved 65.6 million gallons of water that was sent back to Luke for irrigation, which keeps costs down and saves potable drinking water,” Vollmer says.

Engineers operate in three shifts to ensure the plant runs 24/7. Each shift is responsible for different tasks essential to keeping the plant operating. “Maintenance and repair is accomplished on first shift,” Vollmer says. “Luke AFB has 19 wastewater pump stations called lift stations; these are checked during the second shift. Lab testing is conducted on third shift.” Airmen at the plant ensure that the water released and the byproducts that are disposed of are not hazardous to the environment. If they are found to be hazardous they are sent to a hazardous material facility for processing. Kudray explains, airmen evaluate samples of water several times daily during the cleaning process to determine the water’s temperature and pH balance, and they also test the ammonia, nitrate and sludge volume in the plant. The wastewater plant has many responsibilities that are essential to the mission. Their small shop ensures mission success while helping to sustain the environment and saving the base money.

Vietnam Veterans

n the last 40 years, the Arizona Military Museum has made a name for itself as a force of militant pride for veterans and nonveterans. The award-winning museum, operated by the Arizona National Guard Historical Society, boasts impressive displays of authentic military mementos, some of which date back to the 1600s, and honors Arizona warriors through awareness events and educational outreach. And this month is no different. The nonprofit is hosting a commemoration ceremony on Sunday, March 29, to recognize those who fought during the Vietnam War. In conjunction with National Vietnam War Veterans Day—which was signed into law by President Donald Trump in 2017— the free celebration aims to give thanks to veterans who are often forgotten, says museum President Joe Abodeely. “The Vietnam vets who served were the most patriotic in our country’s history,” he shares. “Two-thirds of those who served were volunteers.” From noon to 5 p.m., Vietnam-era veterans and their families are invited to gather at the Papago Park Military Reservation for short presentations by fellow Vietnam veterans, light refreshments and a chance to tour the state’s largest operating adobe. Memorabilia from the 19-year war will also be distributed. “Our museum’s purpose is to honor all veterans,” says Abodeely, who also served in Vietnam. “But we have a special room to honor Vietnam veterans.” AAM houses a nearly 3,000-square-foot space dedicated to the war, which lasted from 1955 to 1975. The exhibit includes a full-size UH-1 Huey “gunship” helicopter, ZPU-4 Soviet four barreled anti-aircraft gun, M-38A1 gun jeep and numerous uniforms, weapons, accoutrements and photos. In collaboration with the Arizona Art

Alliance and private artists, the museum features displayed works of art by Vietnam veterans depicting their own personal experiences. The Vietnam War was a long and divisive conflict that pitted the communist government of North Vietnam against South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States, according to History.com. Considered a Cold War-era proxy war by some, tensions heightened between the United States and Soviet Union. In the nearly 20-year time span, more than 3 million people died as a result, including over 58,000 Americans. More than half of the casualties were Vietnamese civilians. Strong U.S. opposition to the war caused a bitter divide within the country, even after President Richard Nixon ordered the withdrawal of forces in 1973. In 1975, communist forces ended the war by seizing control of South Vietnam, and the country was unified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam the following year. Because of the severity of the war’s unpopularity, many returning veterans were met with disdain and disrespect, says Abodeely. “I went to Vietnam because I loved my country and to fight for freedom,” he shares. “I came back and they spit on us, called us

baby killers.” Abodeely served as a combat infantry unit commander with the 1st Air Cavalry Division during the Tet Offensive in the Republic of Vietnam in 1968. He tells the Sound of Freedom that it’s as important as ever to pay respect to the veterans of Vietnam because “they’ve been honored the least.” And his compassion is carried throughout the details of the AAM. Founded in 1981, the museum features a chronological presentation of uniforms, accoutrements, artifacts and weapons from the 1600s to the present. Combining history, art and prose, display themes include conquistadors, Spanish-colonial and Mexican periods, U.S.-Mexican War, Civil War, Arizona territory, Indian Wars, Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam, among others. “People donate a lot of things. We just got a unique WWII Japanese field radio,” Abodeely discloses. “People bring in guns and we have a lot of uniforms. “They feel good to put it to rest somewhere,” he continues. “That’s the psychology of all this.” In 2010, the Old Arsenal Building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places—the official listing of the Nation’s cultural resources worthy of preservation. “It’s been a labor of love for me,” Abodeely says warmly of his lengthy tenure. The Vietnam veterans ceremony will take place inside the museum at 5636 E. McDowell Road, Phoenix. Presentations will begin at 2 p.m. and all attendees are required to show a driver’s license or military ID upon entry.

ryan Chaplin’s focus in life is taking care of veterans. As a former member of the Army and the Air Force, he knows the plight of veterans. “I did 20 years in the Army, 10 years, two months and eight days in the Air Force,” Chaplin says. “It’s extremely close to me.” Through his nonprofit Bravo Brotherhood Veterans Foundation, Chaplin is organizing the first Arizona Veteran Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at Metrocenter Mall, 9617 N. the public, except for the job fair, which is restricted to veterans. “The expo is an opportunity for veterans to learn more about the many resources, benefits, products and services available to them by local organizations,” Chaplin says. “Veterans can meet with the vendors who are offering assistance to both them and their families.” The job fair is an opportunity for veterans and employers to meet to discuss available positions. Additionally, workshop/seminars will be offered on topics like resume writing, career planning, interviewing techniques, entrepreneurship and online searching. The vendors are specific to veterans. “Our vendors represent community service providers, VA benefits organizations, nonprofit organizations and local businesses providers,” Chaplin says. “More than 50 local and national veterans services organizations have been invited to participate in the expo, and their participation will help ensure that this expo will be the absolute best veterans-related event in Arizona.” Among those scheduled to appear are Desert Breeze Kayaking Tours, Dress for Success Phoenix, ASU, PTSD Foundation of America, Team Rubicon, Marine Corps, The Combat Dolls, Diving Devil Dogs, Bravo Brotherhood Veterans Foundation, 1st Squad, Valors, Team RWB, Road Warriors AZ and Patriotic Workshop. For a little fun, the car/bike show’s mission is to bring together veterans who have the same interests. “My wife and I started this organization in February 2018 and received our 501 (c)(3) this February,” Chaplin says. “That was a task in itself. “I’m all about helping my veterans. I was speaking to a couple veterans at the VA. One gentleman said he had to work three jobs to make his bills. I thought we need to help. What can we do? Another friend of mine, he asked why there wasn’t a sort of expo. I brainstormed and figured a veterans job fair would be the primary focus to help veterans get in better positions to get a hand up in life.” This isn’t Chaplin’s first effort to help veterans. He gave away seven cars to veteran families this year at the Maricopa County StandDown, coordinated by the Arizona Housing Coalition’s Arizona Veterans StandDown Alliance. “Being a disabled vet, the reason we give away cars is because I’ve seen whole families getting off the bus going to the VA,” Chaplin says. “They have to schlep the little ones and everyone with them. More than 250,000 attendees enjoyed the last show in 2018, making it one of the most highly attended events in Arizona. “We also have some special performances this year that folks haven’t seen before or in a long time,” Busch says. Shockwave the Jet Truck will race Red Bull’s Kirby Chambliss in his Edge 540 plane. Shockwave is a custom-built race truck equipped with three J34-48 Pratt & Whitney Jet Engines originally out of the USA Navy T2 Buckeye. The combined horsepower is 36,000. These three jet engines make 21,000 pounds of thrust that easily propel this truck to speeds over 350 mph while racing planes at North American air shows.

The veterans live vicariously through the guys doing it now and they share cool stories about the way it was back then. “We treat it like a homecoming for the veterans. We want to treat them like the heroes they are. We’re appreciative of the sac-

he purpose of the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron “Thunderbirds” isn’t to showcase the skills of its individual pilots, feels Capt. Kyle Oliver, its No. 6 pilot. In fact, the team’s mission, he points out, is to display the “pride, precision and excellence of the United States Air Force embodied in formation flying.” “What we’re doing is not to try to just show off how good we are, but show off how good the Air Force is and how well all Air Force pilots do their job—and the level of detail that they put into their mission sets, which are the tactical mission sets of the Air Force,” Oliver says. “We put that same focus and effort into the minor details of putting on a phenomenal, entertaining and safe air show.”

The squadron will put that pride, precision and excellence on display at the upcoming Luke Days, scheduled for Saturday, March 21, and Sunday, March 22. The twoday event at Luke Air Force Base marks one of the Thunderbirds’ first shows this season. A new recruit in his debut season with the team, Oliver will fly opposing solo. He is joined by 11 other officers on the Thunderbirds: Lt. Col. John Caldwell, commander/leader; Maj. Trevor Aldridge, left wing; Capt. Michael Brewer, right wing; Maj. Zayn Taylor, slot; Maj. Michelle Curran, lead solo; Lt. Col. Kevin DiFalco, operations officer; Maj. Jason Markzon, advance pilot/narrator; Lt. Col. Dr. Noel Colls, flight surgeon; Capt. Katie Moorkamp, executive officer; Capt. Mike Bell, maintenance officer; and Capt. Remoshay Nelson, public affairs officer. As Nos. 1 through 6, Caldwell, Aldridge, Brewer, Taylor, Curran and Oliver fly the demonstrations. Pilots Nos. 7 and 8—DiFalco and Markzon—are also experienced pilots, but do not fly in the show; they do, however, fly aircraft to show sites so they have spares in case of maintenance issues, Oliver says. And, pilots Nos. 9 through 12— Colls, Moorkamp, Bell and Nelson—provide additional support. “We try to bring a little bit of everything with the show,” Oliver explains of the demonstration, which he describes as featuring four pilots who take off in diamond

Because the Thunderbirds travel far and wide for flyovers, “bridging the gap between the military and the civilian sector,” Oliver recalls seeing the squadron many times growing up. When he saw the Dayton Air Show one summer in the mid-2000s, he recalls, his sentiment was, “Nope, this isn’t a phase I’m meant to grow out of. This is something I actually want to do.” “From then on I kind of dedicated myself to pursuing the path of flying fast jets in the Air Force,” he says. Originating from Beavercreek, Ohio, according to his official biography on afthunderbirds.com, Oliver went on to major in communication technology and music through Ohio State University’s ROTC program. He was commissioned by the U.S. Air Force in 2010, and has served in Operation Inherent Resolve over Iraq and Syria. After graduation, he says he spent approximately a year and a half doing pilot training in Oklahoma; followed by a year learning to fly the F-22 Raptor in Florida; three years flying in Alaska; and finally about two and a half years in Virginia before being recruited by the Thunderbirds and training with the F-16. But to become a Thunderbirds pilot, Oliver explains, there’s a highly competitive application process, with a “deep, deep breadth of experience” in flying required. Applicants must amass a minimum of 750 flying hours— which Oliver estimates can take seven to 10 years—followed by another 80 to 100 flights of new training after selection to “upgrade” an experienced fighter pilot to a “Thunderbird.” Positions are staggered, with officers serving

for two seasons. The application process is extensive. According to afthunderbirds.com, interested officers must provide comprehensive career records and letters of recommendation. There are numerous evaluations and screenings before finalists are recommended for the job. But even then, the training never stops. “Once you are selected to the team, the training obviously is kind of just beginning at that point,” Oliver explains. “We’ve spent about the last four months—so, anywhere between mid-October to November, through our first show here in about three weeks (Fiesta of Flight on March 14 at Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas)—flying almost twice a day, every day, in order to make that happen.” ‘A phenomenal team’ Though the Thunderbirds’ 12 officers— namely the six demonstration pilots—pre-

sumably get the spotlight, Oliver emphasizes that he and his squadron could not perform their jobs without the support of and trust in a strong backbone. This crew includes a large collection of enlisted team members from other backgrounds—all of which have their own competitive, extensive requirements—and even civilians. The Thunderbirds Showline is one particular support branch backing the pilots. These team members, who Oliver calls “frontline maintainers,” are essential to demonstrations, even before takeoff. “The show actually starts with getting the aircraft started, getting them pre-flighted and getting them to the end of the runway, and the Showline are a big part of what you’ll see there,” he explains. “The routine that they go through just to launch the aircraft out, we do all of that in unison; and they’ve got a ground show that is choreographed just as well, if not better, than our show in the air. And those Showline maintainers basically get to represent what is the majority of our force.” Support is also needed for administrative duties and planning, as well as packing equipment. “We’ve got a phenomenal team down in the front office that makes sure that all the paperwork is square for the commander. We’ve got folks that make sure that all of our flying currencies are good to go. We’ve got folks that make sure that all of our equipment gets from point A to point B,” Oliver says. “The logistics involved in picking up this squadron and moving it around the country each weekend are absolutely immense.”

LUKE DAYS 2020 Special Appearances The Luke Days 2020 schedule wasn’t available at press time, but here are the appearances scheduled over the weekend. BY MEGAN CHILD U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Each year, the Air Force Thunderbirds take great pride and immense care in displaying their hour-long demonstrations, performing for individuals all around the globe. This drillstyle ceremony kicks off by showcasing the attention to detail and sharply choreographed demonstration that defines their enlisted members. As jets take to the sky, only a few feet from wingtip to wingtip, audiences witness the amazing skills and proficiency every fighter pilot possesses. In addition, the solo pilots coordinate their own loud and proud routine, exhibiting the extraordinary abilities of the F-16 Fighting Falcon, which stands as the Air Force’s premier multirole fighter jet. F-35A Lightning II Demonstration Team Zipping through the chilly air at unimaginable heights, the Lightning II Demonstration Team plans to showcase its expertise and skills when piloting the F-35A, America’s newest fifth-generation fighter, this spring. The 18-minute long ride highlights the jet’s numerous capabilities including speed, agility and high-g turning. In the coming months, the team will design and prepare new launch and recovery procedures for its demonstration routine as well as providing opportunities for individuals around the world to witness the F-35A’s groundbreaking stealth, interoperability and compatibility. U.S. Air Force Wings of Blue With a reputation for producing exceptional leaders, officers and Air Force

skydivers, the Wings of Blue prepares multiple performances of heart-racing skydiving at the Luke Days 2020 air show held this spring. Since the team’s inception, the Wings of Blue has generated four team members of astronauts, 10 team members of general officers, and countless other professional representatives. In addition, the team’s national and world skydiving champions continue to dominate competitions at the collegiate level, providing a worthwhile show and experience crowds won’t soon forget. Tucker is thrilled to present a unique array of performances in an entirely different style with his very own aircraft weighing in at only 770 pounds. Tucker coasts through the sky in his 1941 Piper J-3 Cub at speeds as low as 32 mph while perching his aircraft on top of a moving ambulance van, even cutting the engines entirely at 6,000 feet for dead-stick-yet-graceful aerobatics. Buck Roetman Get ready for a lively aerobatic performance held by Buck Roetman in his highly modified Pitts S2S as he displays stunning maneuvers in the blue sky above, leaving audiences to gape in awe. Roetman has flown more than 155 different types of airplanes, resulting in more than 18,000 hours of flight time over 42 years. Amid the smoke and the roar of his 375-plus horsepower Lycoming engine, he whips through the air at more than 200 miles per hour at less than 20 feet above the ground. Individuals will leave the presentation wanting more as Roetman holds spectacular shows during the day and throughout the night.

She has also strolled across one of the most powerful aircrafts in history, a Jet Waco with 3000 HP, while striding on planes with less capability such as a Quicksilver Ultralight at 45 HP. Matt Younkin Beech 18 Although Matt Younkin’s Beech 18 was never designed for aerobatic flight, the aircraft’s incredible performance is still revered as a show-stopping act and major highlight in every air show it has participated in throughout the past. The extraordinary show begins with a roll on takeoff followed by a series of Cuban eights, point-rolls and a loop to boot. Younkin performs to light-hearted music as he executes maneuvers and patterns audience members would have never thought possible for such a large transport plane. However, the

Shockwave One of three jet-powered American trucks, Shockwave, a Peterbilt semi, is driven by Chris Darnell. This monster of a truck holds the world record for the most jet-powered fullsized vehicle at 376 miles per hour. Shockwaver possesses three Westinghouse J34-48 jets, allowing the large fiery automobile to complete a quarter mile in only 6.63 seconds. After numerous upgrades and slight changes, the Shockwave Jet Fired Truck is now completed and ready to head into the transporter for its first 2020 air show. Desert Rats Stationed on the outskirts of the Phoenix Deer Valley Airport, the Desert Rats Demonstration Team flies in four-plane formations, consisting of highly experienced Arizona pilots. This unit of rugged warbirds plans to excite crowds with Diamond, Close Trail and Arrowhead formations, as well as opposing passes at incredible speeds. Flying

Bob Carlton Jet Powered Sailplane As one of the most versatile air show performers in North America, Bob Carlton has logged over 2,000 hours in a wide variety of aircrafts as well as holding a commercial pilot certificate. Over the years, Carlton began displaying air shows in his very own Salto sailplane, continuing to add innovative performances such as brainstorming biplane aerobatics, helicopter sailplane tow, and night aerobatics with strobes and pyro in the world’s only twin jet sailplane. He has flown numerous hang gliders, airplanes, helicopters and

eginning with Luke Days 2020, Luke AFB is introducing an enhanced public safety policy that includes the type of bag attendees can bring into the events. It’s a move that will not only improve the safety of guests and meet security requirements, but also one to speed up entry on each event day. The new safety policy only permits guests to enter Luke Days with clutch purses that do not exceed 6.5 inches by 4.5 inches or clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags that do not exceed 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches— or 1-gallon clear plastic freezer bags.

An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection at an entry gate. Luke AFB’s long-standing security rules will also still apply: Security officers will be checking all bags at the gate/entrance, and guests will be screened for weapons and contraband. Weapons of any type, skateboards, drones, coolers and animals (service animals to assist guests with disabilities are an exception) are among the prohibited items. One sealed bottle of water (under 17 oz.) will be allowed; other outside beverages and food are prohibited.

And those kind of military retirees love being in areas where the installation is welcomed by the community.” Sites admits the culture around Luke can take some getting used to. “It’s incredibly intimidating when you first set foot in here,” says the former golf professional, who also logged a few years at Merrill Lynch before getting involved with the YMCA. “The civilian world and the military world are two completely separate cultures.” That’s part of why it’s so important that bases are established in welcoming communities, an arrangement Sites says Luke has found in Glendale. “Luke has always been very good at engaging with the community, so the community around the base has a pretty strong understanding of Luke’s importance here,” he says.

“Our elected officials have also been good about spreading the word to their constituents about how important the base is to the community.” A year before he died, Sen. John McCain said of Luke and the state’s other military bases, “Arizonans can be deeply proud of the outsized role our state plays in protecting and defending the nation.” But Sites has also been surprised by the international scope of the operation. “People think of Luke as a West Valley asset,” he says. “But it’s more than that. It’s also not just a Maricopa County asset, or an Arizona asset, or even a national asset. If you look at all of the international partners that train here—from Australia, Norway, Italy, the Netherlands, Singapore, Taiwan, Israel, Japan and South Korea—Luke

is really a global asset. When you look at where those graduated fighter pilots are now flying, this base has trained pilots all over the world.” It’s also trained more than fighter pilots. “Of course, Luke is known as the world’s greatest training ground for F-35 and F-16 fighter pilots, which is exactly why the base has existed here since 1941,” Sites says. “Right now, it’s home to 96 F-35s and 77 F-16s. And if you were to rack and stack that fleet against all of the other air force fleets around the globe, it’s the fourth largest air force in the world. “But I always love to highlight the fact that there are other branches of the military on this

installation,” he adds. “You have 850 sailors in the desert here, inside what’s called a NOSC—a Navy Operational Support Center. And their mission is to support family services for all the sailors who are deployed in the Pacific, which is three-fifths of our fleet. Then you have 400 Marines on the base. They’re here in what’s called a Bulk Fueling and Transportation Engineering Unit, and their job is to design systems to pull fuel from a tanker out in the water and move that fuel 69 miles inland”—basically to provide fuel for Marine ground transportation. “It’s really important to our Department of Defense.” The public gets to learn a little more about the base at the annual Luke Days open house air show, which takes place this year on the weekend of March 21 and March 22. Attendees this time around are hoping to see more of the impressive maneuvers previewed in a series of videos posted to Instagram late last year, which showed Capt. Andrew “Dojo” Olson, now an F-35 instructor at Luke, performing tight loops and dramatic falling leaf maneuvers never before seen by a F-35 pilot. Again, Sites can’t resist the Super Bowl comparisons. “The largest one-day event in the state of Arizona, when it comes here, is the Super Bowl,” he says. “The largest five-day event is the Waste Management Phoenix Open. “But the largest two-day event in Arizona is the air show at Luke Air Force Base,” he adds, proudly. “It’s pretty awesome, if you’ve never been to it.”

rcadia Publishing’s latest entry in its “Images of America” series of books, focused around Arizona’s Luke Air Force Base, aptly leads with a famed photograph of its namesake. “Second Lt. Frank Luke Jr.,” the excerpt reads, “stands in front of his 13th kill on September 18, 1918. It was his fifth kill that day.” The posthumous Congressional Medal of Honor recipient—nicknamed the “Arizona Balloon Buster” for having shot down four aircraft and 14 balloons over 18 days—according to the caption, is just one of the many included in the book, which chronicles the history of the base. “I want to pay homage to the men and women who have served at Luke Air Force Base since (it was built in) 1941,” explains author Rick Griset, an Air Force veteran who says he was stationed at Luke in uniform twice during his nearly three decades of service. Now retired from active duty, he dedicates his time to studying its history. ry and written before, but wanting to publish commercially, he finally had an in. The book was released March 2. Griset will donate all his royalties to Fighter Country Partnership and the 1st Lt. Frank Luke Jr. Memorial Museum in Goodyear. During what he estimates to be a nine- to 10-month writing process, Griset scoured the base’s archives for photos with historical significance. He didn’t see a book of the sort already on the market, and he hopes to write another—albeit with a more narrative structure—in the future. “My thought was, ‘What better way to tell the story of Luke Air Force Base but through the photos that are in the original histories?’” Griset recalls. “So that’s what I did.” Beneath each photo spanning the book’s 160 pages are captions describing each moment in time. Photographers are credited if they are known. Divided into chapters separating Luke’s various eras—Luke Field: 1940–1946, Reactivation as Luke Air Force Base: 1951– 1952, 3600th Combat Crew Training Wing: 1952–1958, 4510th Combat Crew Training Wing: 1958–1969, 58th Tactical Fighter Training Wing: 1969–1977, Tactical Training Luke and 832nd Air Division: 1977–1991, 58th Fighter Wing: 1991–1994, and 56th Fighter Wing: 1994–2019—the book spans the base’s evolution. BOOK FROM PAGE 40 Griset features a written history of its origins, as well as a description of basic training in those early days. “The history of Luke Air Force Base to some degree mirrors that the history of the United States Air Force and the U.S. military, and that history actually mirrors our societal history,” Griset explains, citing the gradual allowance of women in service as well as desegregation as notable progress. “What I’m trying to do in this book is show that progression over time,” he adds. Despite having spent an estimated nine years studying the history of Luke Air Force Base, Griset says he himself learned quite a bit while compiling the book. Among them is what he feels to be the base’s oft-overlooked effort in World War II, as well as the day-to-day lives of those who have been stationed there. “I could have easily made the book all about pilots and airplanes, but I tried to

show all the different pieces of life on base,” Griset explains. An Air Force Academy of Colorado Springs graduate, Griset has a master’s degree in history, which led him to his Air Force research post-service. He traces back some interest in history to his childhood, though. “The history that I’m mostly interested in is the history of people, the study of people,” he says. “And what intrigues me

about history are the connections.” Those connections aren’t just who knew who, he says, but how everyone linked to create an on-base culture. “Part of my interest in the book here is: What did the people do before, during and after they were at Luke Field?” Griset explains. Keeping in line with Griset’s overall effort to pay tribute to the men and women who served at Luke, the author includes, on page 157, a photo of the retirement ceremony of Dorothy Rowe, who the book reports spent most of her 70-year career working for the base controller. “She’s the longest-serving Air Force member and the second-longest Department of Defense member,” Griset explains, adding: “While she may be an extreme example, she’s not alone. A Storied Career Navy veteran finally achieves longtime goal to run a business BY CONNOR DZIAWURA

ocal businesswoman Kris Piotrowski’s background may not be what one initially expects from someone running a mobile flooring showroom. Now a local franchisee for the Atlanta-based Floor Coverings International, Scottsdale’s Piotrowski brings with her a wealth of experience—both in the Navy and in the corporate world, including earning a Harvard MBA. Her new Floor Coverings International Mesa, which opened near the end of December, serves clients throughout the Valley, including in Avondale, Glendale, Goodyear, Litchfield Park and Tolleson. Long before she ever got her shot at a franchise, though, she says she wanted to be a

stockbroker. But she was too short—literally. Piotrowski says her short stature stood in the way of her goal, as the busy stock-trading environment was heavily reliant on hand signaling. And though she earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from DePaul and hoped to run her own business—taking after her cobbler father—she felt she was too young for such a venture. So, she joined the Navy in 1994. “Even with a college degree, the market just wasn’t great with jobs that I wanted to do,” Piotrowski shares of the decision. “I decided to do something different and it was the Navy, and so I just took the plunge and went for it— kind of like the franchise. You just have to take a risk sometimes.” Though she only planned to enlist for a couple of years, she wound up giving the Navy more than two decades. To be more specific—she elaborates that she was deployed seven times, served in Iraq in 2006, and was stationed on four different ships: a cruiser, a destroyer and two

carriers. She was awarded a Bronze Star for her time in Iraq. Her positions over the years included House liaison between U.S. Navy and members of Congress, joint contracting officer, Navy acquisition and contracting officer, assistant supply/logistics director, director of supply chain logistics aboard the U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower, and director of logistics and operations – aviation at U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia. “I ran basically the supply department on different ships,” she recalls. “It’s everything from paper to aviation engines to food—anything logistics or supply related. “At my height I had a team of almost 600 sailors, and that was when I was the supply officer on the (U.S.S.) Dwight D. Eisenhower,” she continues. “And so, it was a huge tour.” While in the Navy, however, her entrepreneurial goals remained intact. She pursued a Harvard MBA while enlisted. “One of the things they test you on is your Myers–Briggs (Type Indicator) and all your different tests and they tell you what you’re good at, and they said that I was an entrepreneur,” she says. “And then, of course, my dad had his own business growing up, and so it always kind of stuck into me in the back of my head that, ‘You really should do your own business.’” After leaving the Navy in 2015, she still desired to run her own business, but wound up spending several years in corporate America, still feeling that she wasn’t ready to be on her own. While working in the business world, she says gained experience as a director of service provider management at facilities management company Vixxo, after which she worked at Taser, which became Axon. “I ran their logistics and their global facilities; so it was everything from negotiating leases to tenant improvements,” she explains of her work with Axon. “It was quite the gamut.” But something kept nagging at her. She still wanted to run her own business. Finally, she was ready. She landed upon Floor Coverings International. “I said, ‘You know what, I’m sitting in the best place financially, emotionally, I’m situated with home—everything.’ So it was the best time in my life if I was going to do this, to do it now,” she explains. She adds: “And then that brings up the, ‘Well, why a franchise?’ And really, that’s because I don’t want to do the digital marketing. … I don’t want to do the negotiating products. I want to be on a team while running my own business versus having to do everything. I didn’t want to reinvent the wheel, and I wanted my own schedule, and so that’s kind of what led me to where I am.” Plus, some of her corporate background lends well to her new profession. “It’s home improvement and I also have facilities in my background,” she says. “And, it was the culture of the franchise. Culture is key, obviously, and so the more I learned about them and the other franchise owners and how they were able to scale and how they were backed by the franchisor, it made it stack above anything else that I was looking at.” Now, 48 and working hard at her longtime goal, it all comes full circle, as she feels her time spent in the Navy pairs well with her business acumen. After all, she says, the Navy builds character— structure, organization, time management, values, integrity, courage and commitment. “Just dealing with flooring installers, I’m very upfront and honest with them. I’ve had several of them say that I have more integrity than what they’re used to seeing, and so they want to be on my team,” she recounts. “Those are kind of good things. The business aspect of the Navy is a little bit different because it’s government, but the important pieces that you need to carry with you through life are found there.”

What they all have in common is post-traumatic stress disorder—brought home from wartime service in the U.S. military. Sports allow them to work as a team, like in the military, and find a new family and community among like-minded veterans. A new study scheduled to be published in the spring by the Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship finds that participating in intense sports and other outdoor activities is an effective alternative treatment for PTSD, although it notes that

Iraq War and 12% of Gulf War veterans deal with PTSD in any given year. It is estimated that almost a third of all veterans who served in the Vietnam War have suffered from PTSD in their lifetime. In Phoenix, veterans say playing rugby, doing jiu-jitsu and participating in outdoor activities helps alleviate their PTSD.

more research still needs to be done. Traditional methods include medication and therapy. Physical activity does not directly treat the brain or its chemical composition, but it helps some veterans alleviate the terrorizing symptoms of PTSD, says Tracey Burraston, author of the study who earned her master’s degree in military psychology from Adler University. “It’s a rollercoaster and it’s 24/7. You can’t turn it off and it’s exhausting,” Burraston says. “To be in that constant state of agitation and defense is exhausting.” In her three-year study of 32 veterans 25 to 50 years old, Burraston concluded that sports reduce anxiety in many patients with PTSD. Veterans also saw improvement in their mental stability, hyper-alertness, paranoia, depression, ability to sleep, feelings of disconnect and claustrophobia. The Phoenix VA Health Care System already uses sports to treat veterans combating PTSD. Kayla Forster, Phoenix VA recreation therapy supervisor, says many veterans find solace participating in sports programs. According to reports from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 11% to 20% of veterans who served in the

Rugby and brotherhood Once a week, Elmer Ugarte joins his Phoenix Rugby Club teammates to ferociously compete. For Ugarte, lacing up his boots and stepping onto the field alongside his teammates offers him the greatest sense of normalcy since being shot in the heart by a sniper in Iraq. “When you have the family aspect of it, with the brutality of it, and then just the celebration of it, it’s just a great mixture,” Ugarte says of rugby. For seven years, the military was all Ugarte knew, leaving him with a sense of unease when he returned to his former life. “For me, it’s never going to be that easy again. It’s never going to be black and white. They’re either trying to kill you or they’re not trying to kill you,” Ugarte says. After being forced to leave his brotherhood of soldiers because of his physical and mental injuries, Ugarte says he was unknowingly in need of a new family. He found it in rugby. “I don’t want to think of where I would be without it,” Ugarte says. The sport has given him an outlet for his aggression and the kind of camaraderie and brotherhood he had in the U.S. Marines. “When I cross that line and go on that pitch and start playing, my problems are on the sideline; they’re not with me right there,” Ugarte says. “It’s me, the ball, my team, the other team and the contact and that’s it.” P.J. Rovinelli Jr., 36, Phoenix Rugby Club president, says he knows the importance of the team’s comradeship. “It may get ugly and shifty during the game, but the minute the whistle blows, we’re all mates and we’re going to go back and we’re going to go celebrate together,” Rovinelli says. “We’re going MARCH/APRIL 2020 | Sound of Freedom

H E A LT H to have this moment of fellowship.” Rugby is all about serving the sport, community and your teammates, similar values that he says Ugarte would have found in the military. “I lost something that I’ll never really have again, in the brotherhood,” Ugarte says. “You find it in little places here and there, and rugby’s definitely one of them.” While Ugarte finds solitude hitting the rugby field, others require more soothing activities to bring comfort to their lives. The serenity of outdoors Stepping outside into the fresh, soothing air, Shaun Barlow absorbs the serenity around him, saying it brings peace of mind, ultimately alleviating the intense PTSD symptoms he typically struggles with. When feeling overwhelmed, Barlow takes his form of therapy outdoors—camping, hiking and hunting. For some veterans, Burraston says, it’s too overwhelming to even leave the house because of the emotional and physical responses to anything others would consider normal, like a door slamming or traffic. “So a lot of guys don’t leave their houses for years,” she says. Barlow says he wanted to conquer his fear of being outside with stimuli everywhere. But most importantly, Barlow needed people around him who understood what he had been through and could help him fight through the struggles. Joining Changed by Nature Outdoors, a Phoenix nonprofit that takes veterans, first responders and underprivileged children on outdoor adventures, “got me out of my rut,” Barlow says. The Phoenix VA advocates for outdoor activities for veterans who cannot find solace in contact sports, or are not physically fit enough to do them. But Forster says veterans need to find something they can truly immerse themselves in. “If they don’t find the interest and the drive and the passion to do those sports, it’s not going to benefit them,” Forster says. Johanna Avilez, adaptive sports coordinator and recreation therapist at the Phoenix VA, says outside activities provide distraction for veterans and opportunities to focus on something other than the overwhelming symptoms. Burraston sees the physical benefits, too, explaining that outdoor activities like camping and fishing help veterans normalize their heart rates and improve their breathing patterns. “When you’re outside and you’re breathing and moving, you get your blood going and start to feel better about life,” Burraston says. Barlow found that his sleep and family interactions improved. Jiu-jitsu and its beneﬁts Jean-Paul Villont heads to his dojo in Mesa several times a week to practice jiu-jitsu and control his PTSD. Veterans partner up as they duel each other, using their fighting techniques. The veterans also help each other improve their skills. “It mimics the military unit. Not only do these guys train six days a week, but they also hang out together… so they have that core family,” says Burraston, whose research focuses on jiu-jitsu. “If anyone starts to feel bad, then the other guys will step in, be positive, uplift them and support them.” Villont started doing jiu-jitsu three years ago, after learning of Burraston’s study. Urgent Care FastMed serves veterans through new MISSION Act

LANE TASSIN FastMed Urgent Care Western Region Chief Medical Officer oint Commission-accredited FastMed Urgent Care is proud to be a part of the network of community providers serving veterans as part of the new urgent care expansion by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This expansion is an effort to increase the availability of timely, high-quality medical care for veterans and part of the MISSION Act, passed by Congress and signed into law by President Donald Trump earlier this year. The act allows veterans to receive care from urgent care clinics outside of the VA system without prior authorization. Eligible veterans are now covered for FastMed visits when they have acute illnesses and injuries such as colds, cough, flu-like symptoms, sore throat, earache, skin infections, wounds, back pain, joint and muscle sprains as well as other injuries. Diagnostic X-rays and many lab tests are also available on-site. Though, before making an urgent care appointment, it’s essential to understand the benefits of visiting a nearby urgent care clinic

compared to when it’s best to visit a hospital emergency department (ED). Tending to the needs of the veteran community is both a responsibility and an honor. However, to maintain optimal outcomes, it’s critical to direct veterans to the facilities that are best suited for each veteran’s particular medical needs. Each situation varies case by case and cannot be generalized. There are some basic guidelines to help decide whether to visit an urgent care clinic or a hospital ED. While urgent care clinics and hospital EDs provide several of the same services, it’s recommended that patients go to the nearest ED when they might have a life-threatening illness or injury. For less severe conditions such as colds, flu, most cuts and burns, sprains and many fractures, a nearby urgent care clinic is typically the best option and is much less expensive than a hospital visit. Urgent care visits costs, averaging $168, may be as little as one-seventh of care at a hospital ED. At an ED, patients may have multiple charges and higher co-pays as well as medical bills that are left to be paid out of pocket when an insurance company vetted the situation as a nonmedical emergency. Wait times can also play a factor depending on the treatment sought. EDs function by treating patients with the most serious and demanding conditions first, leaving those with less severe problems to wait in the waiting room. At FastMed, you can walk in with no appointment, or you can schedule your appointment and usually be seen that same day. While not always the case, the following common conditions are examples of where to typically receive the appropriate care:

Urgent Care: Earache Sore throat Fever Cough, colds, flu and upper respiratory infections Gastrointestinal discomfort, such as diarrhea Vomiting Rash Lacerations and other superficial wounds Simple sprains and fractures Emergency Department: Confusion or severe headache Head injuries with loss of consciousness Altered vision Coughing or vomiting up blood Deep wounds or excessive bleeding Drug overdoses Slurred speech, loss of feeling or muscular weakness Seizures Severe chest or abdominal pain Severe injuries caused by an automobile accident or fall Previously, veterans seeking affordable and convenient health care services commonly faced a challenging road. Before the VA allowed enrollees to seek medical assistance beyond traditional VA hospitals, veterans faced long waits for an appointment at a VA health care center with some wait times even being documented at 30 days or more. Veterans can now visit several urgent care walk-in clinics and hospital ED for their health care needs and significantly reduce their wait times. Luke AFB earns Vitalant award for impact on state’s blood supply BY SUE THEW

he efforts of blood drive coordinators throughout the state were applauded on February 14 at Valentines for Life, the premier annual awards event for Vitalant (formerly known as United Blood Services). Last year, volunteer blood drive coordinators from 1,475 organizations hosted 3,615 blood drives across Arizona, which provided 91,798 blood donations. Because blood can be separated into components to benefit multiple patients, those donations saved about a quarter million lives. Luke Air Force Base was one of 52 organizations that earned the Impact Award, Vitalant’s most prestigious honor that is reached by just 3% of all blood drive coordinators across Arizona.

Under the leadership of Major Shelby McKay and MSgt. Stephen Iles, Luke AFB hosted a record 60 blood drives and provided Arizona patients with 860 blood donations last year. Even in the 1950s, hospital patients could count on Luke AFB to provide volunteer blood donors. As Impact Award recipients for the 14th time, they continue the proud tradition. The

cornerstone of success for the Luke AFB blood program is the engagement of almost every squadron to get involved. Each squadron competes during the year to earn the title of “red baron.” They do an excellent job of managing the program and ensuring that the best practices are used at every blood drive. Impact Award winners make the biggest difference on the blood supply by going above and beyond with outstanding blood drive planning, as well as recruiting donors on difficult days or during times of the year when the need is most critical. Valentines for Life guests met 5-year-old Nathan, who is alive because of more than 80 blood donors. Nathan was born with a rare disorder that causes his red blood cells to rapidly break apart. Every three weeks, he relies on the generosity of strangers to donate life-saving blood—a need that will most likely continue the rest of his life. “To all the donors out there, I would like to say that you have gone above and beyond to save my son’s life and the lives of others,” expresses his mother, April. stablished at the Valle-Williams Airport in 1995, the Planes of Fame Air Museum Grand Canyon is an auxiliary facility of the Planes of Fame Air Museum headquartered at Southern California’s Chino Airport. Now recognized worldwide, the Planes of Fame Air Museum traces its history back to 1957 when aviation historian Edward T. Maloney established an air museum at a relatively humble facility alongside old Route 66 in Claremont, California. The initial display included about a dozen warbirds, various aviation artifacts and more than 300 scale model airplanes, many of which had been built by Maloney as a youngster. Because there were no other air museums west of the Rocky Mountains at that time, Maloney simply called his facility The Air Museum. Over the years, the collection was relocated several times

before finally settling into its Chino location in 1973. For a while, it was known as The Air Museum Planes of Fame, before finally being renamed the Planes of Fame Air Museum. The opening of the facility at the redeveloped Valle-Williams location provided additional display space for the museum’s collection. Furthermore, the Arizona climate was more conducive for the outdoor display of some of the larger aircraft, as well as the outdoor storage of equipment and potential future restoration projects. At any one time, more than 30 warbirds, airliners, homebuilt aircraft and replica aircraft, as well as a variety of target drones and remotely guided flying bombs, are on display at the Valle-Williams location, alongside a host of aviation-related memorabilia. Because many of the aircraft in the Planes of Fame collection are flyable, the display lineup at Valle changes from time-to-time as aircraft are rotated between Chino, California, and Valle, Arizona. Among the more permanent residents at Valle are an F-86A Sabre jet fighter that actually saw combat service during the Korean War, a German Messer-

schmitt Bf 109G-10 fighter that was used in combat by the Luftwaffe’s II Gruppe JG52 in World War II and Grumman F11F-1 Tiger supersonic jet fighter that once flew with the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron. Planes of Fame Air Museum Grand Canyon is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 1 through October 30 annually. With a well-stocked gift shop, admission is $10 for adults, $5 for youngsters 5 to 11 and free for accompanied children under 5.
