AIRPARK With businesses recruiting young tech talent to the Scottsdale Airpark, developers are building new live-work spaces to nest them in. By Jimmy Magahern
T
here is the hardwood flooring, the low-e tinted window panes and, of course, the ultrafast gigabit Internet service. There is the kitchen, with its granite countertops, stainless steel Bosch appliances and Kohler fixtures, and the private rooftop studio, with the optional Jacuzzi. And then there is the roll-up, frosted plexiglass door that connects the home office area to the outside courtyard. Sleek, whisper-quiet and controlled by a smartphone app, it’s what you might expect to see if Apple started making garage doors: a sly co-opting of the iconography of the classic garage start-up as a hip, efficient window treatment. “We specially built a mechanism to make it quieter,” says Irene Clary, president of Catclar Investments, the developer behind SOHO Scottsdale, a combination office, residential and retail development in an industrial zone planned near WestWorld of Scottsdale off the 101 and Bell Road. “You can run everything—your lights, TV, video camera, garage door—from your smartphone or iPad.” SOHO Scottsdale, which begins breaking ground this month, is the latest of several mixed-use developments going up around the Airpark, a concept called live-work, or sometimes live-work-shop, that combines ground-floor offices with townhomes and loft style residential condominiums.. …continues on page 20
