LETTER FROM THE

BOARD CHAIR As the proud father of two Notre Dame graduates and a Notre Dame junior, I have seen firsthand the impact the Academy has had on the lives of so many talented young women. It is now my privilege to serve as the Chair of the Board of Trustees and continue to work with Dr. Judith Dwyer and our accomplished faculty and dedicated staff as we seek to fulfill the mission of Saint Julie. Speak with anyone who knows Notre Dame and you will hear a recurring theme – praise for our strong academic programs, which challenge every student to reach her potential, and our deep commitment to the faith tradition of the Catholic Church and the legacy of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. This is what makes Notre Dame so unique. I have been a member of Notre Dame’s Board of Trustees since 2011 and I am continually inspired by what I see. Notre Dame alumnae are contributing and leading in professions around the world, and at the same time sharing Saint Julie’s passion for justice and compassion for the poor to improve the lives of others. I would like to thank our outstanding faculty and staff for all that they do day in and day out to inspire our students to become the compassionate leaders our world so needs today. Last year, after a comprehensive strategic planning process, the Board approved the Academy’s Strategic Vision

2015-2020: OUR TIME to INSPIRE, and I am excited by the progress we have already made toward the goals set forth in that plan. The Board remains enthusiastically committed to working closely with Dr. Dwyer to further advance those goals and our strategic vision of Notre Dame being recognized as the premier independent Catholic academy for young women in North America. To that end, the Board of Trustees voted in 2015 to support a comprehensive Campus Master Plan which will provide Notre Dame students with a state-of-the-art learning environment for a superior, 21st century education. It is truly exciting to be part of the Notre Dame community at this transformative time. I would like to thank our outgoing Board Chair, Mary Ellen Maggitti, for her dedicated service to Notre Dame during the transition to Dr. Dwyer’s presidency and our strategic planning process. Her wisdom and leadership have been invaluable and I am pleased that she will continue as a Trustee for another year. I would also like to welcome D’Arcy Rudnay ’73 P’03’05 as our new Board Vice Chair and Barb Riley ’90 P’19’21’23 as a new member of the Board. Their expertise and passion for Notre Dame

MESSAGE FROM THE

PRESIDENT Our Strategic Vision 2015-2020 has been described as both ambitious and focused – two words that capture the current momentum at Notre Dame. Rooted in our Catholic identity and the pioneering legacy of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, the Strategic Vision commits to Saint Julie’s belief that schools should foster learning environments that “teach our students what they need to know for life.” As part of our Strategic Vision, the Academy has recently developed a Campus Master Plan through the valuable participation of faculty, students, staff, alumnae, parents and trustees. Guided by Centerbrook Architects and approved by the Board of Trustees during the 2015-2016 school year, the Campus Master Plan presents a dynamic learning space which promotes our deep commitment to community and adds new facilities for STEM education, for liturgy and the performing arts, and for student activities and resources. The revitalization of our campus will occur in several phases, all supported by our fundraising efforts through the OUR TIME to INSPIRE Campaign.

Phase I The completion of the state-of-the-art athletic fields in 2015 has enhanced the front of our campus in extraordinary ways. The Academy added two turf fields and a running track and thoroughly updated the softball field and all-grass playing field. This phase also included the renovation of Launfal Fieldhouse and the creation of a viewing terrace which overlooks the athletic fields. All work incorporated sophisticated storm water management systems and environmentally sensitive landscaping. Phase II The Campus Master Plan also calls for the restoration of the Mansion as the formal “front door” where the Academy will welcome new students, parents, alumnae, and visitors. Joseph B. Callaghan, Inc. Consulting Engineers studied the exterior of the Mansion and John Milner Architects developed the interior design. Both firms specialize in the restoration of historical treasures such as the Mansion. The goal of this restoration is to preserve and enhance the rich architectural nature of this building, long considered as the heart of the campus. The restoration of our Mansion and the development of future facilities continue our commitment to provide a dynamic 21st century learning environment for our students, while retaining the elegant beauty of a 19th century estate. Construction of a state-of-the-art Center for STEM Education will provide students and faculty with an innovative learning environment in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Dr. Judith A. Dwyer The Board of Trustees recently approved the conceptual design of a 30,800 square foot facility that includes nine science laboratories (two chemistry, two biology, two physics, two middle school and one environmental science), three lab prep rooms, a robotics classroom, a technology classroom, and seven math classrooms. The large first floor gathering area (“STEM Gallery”) is a flexible and multipurpose space that allows the community to celebrate current and past student, faculty and alumnae achievements. Spaces for small group collaboration are distributed throughout the corridors on both floors. This facility will also link to the existing Rose Garden, retaining the original stone walls while shaping a new teaching and learning space for environmental studies. Phase III The final phase of the realization of our Campus Master Plan includes the addition of a new Liturgical and Performing Arts Center, a new Student Center or “Commons,” and renovated classrooms in Cuvilly. The enhancement of our learning environment is one aspect of the Strategic Vision 2015-2020. In this Annual Report, you will read of other important developments throughout the Academy.

Even as we develop enhanced 21st century learning spaces, Notre Dame remains a community where we celebrate God’s goodness and the goodness within each person. We promote mutual respect and compassionate leadership, always with a special preference to serve those who are poor. These immeasurable qualities have distinguished the Academy since 1856 and live at the center of all that we cherish. Thank you for your continued support of Notre Dame. PRINCIPAL

The 2015-2016 school year was an exciting and productive year for the faculty, staff and students. Using the Strategic Vision 2015-2020 as our roadmap, our focus on collaboration, leadership, and innovation this year led to many new initiatives and opportunities for our students, including: • Appointment of a Director of the Center for Global Leadership • Appointment of a Director of Academic Technologies • Development of a comprehensive vertically and horizontally articulated curriculum map for all disciplines • Implementation of a flexible rotating student schedule • Introduction of Community Time, an unscheduled daily period designed to facilitate collaboration among faculty and students • Addition of new STEM electives, including Neuroscience, STEM Research, Robotics and Coding and Introduction to Computer Programming • Implementation of Folio, a faculty/staff development and evaluation tool designed to foster collaboration, reflection, and growth • Enhanced service and internship opportunities, including Senior Career Exploration and Junior Service Inquiry. At Notre Dame, we believe that individuals have an inherent responsibility to embrace the ideals of service and stewardship. The 2015-2016 school wide theme of “Water Sustains All Life,” Project STREAM, provided an opportunity for students and teachers to work collaboratively on interdisciplinary projects

Jacqueline Coccia through outreach to the community as they studied the grounds of Darby Creek. Activities included flow rate and water quality analysis and music, dance, and art projects designed to raise awareness of water poverty and sustainability. We are honored that this innovative, cross-curricular program was recognized with the 2016 Environmental Community Service Award, presented by Wawa, 6abc, and the environmental law firm Manko, Gold, Katcher & Fox, LLP (MGKF). We are filled with enthusiasm as we start the 2016-2017 academic year and the implementation of new programs, including the 1:1 MacBook Program for middle school and participation in the Online School for Girls Consortium.

BUSINESS OFFICE REPORT Goal four of the Academy’s Strategic Vision 2015-2020 calls for continued strengthening of Notre Dame’s financial position, and I am pleased to report that we concluded the 2015-2016 school year with a balanced budget. We continue to strengthen the Academy’s financial position through the thoughtful stewardship of our resources.

Operating Income

Tuition and Fees 88.3%

There was a modest increase in tuition, while enrollment grew to a record 540, which reflects recognition of the value of a Notre Dame education. At the same time, financial aid increased. A Financial Aid Committee was formed to review processes and procedures and benchmark the Academy with our peers. The goal of the committee is to maximize the utility of budgeted financial aid dollars, as set out in the five-year Strategic Vision. Notre Dame’s endowment totaled $6 million by the end of the fiscal year thanks to generous contributions and prudent oversight by the Academy’s Investment Committee. In the coming years we are hopeful for significant growth in the endowment to support the new facilities envisioned in the Campus Master Plan. Following the successful completion of the athletic fields project, the 2015-2016 year focused on ongoing facility maintenance. Student experience on campus was enhanced with renovation of the cafeteria. We also hired a new food service operator, Brock, who introduced many new healthy choices for students. During the summer of 2016, we began renovation of the Mansion exterior as we prepare to implement Phase II of the Campus Master Plan.

ADMISSIONS REPORT Goal three of Notre Dame’s Strategic Vision 2015-2020 calls for creation of an Office of Enrollment Management to provide the structure and direction to attract, enroll, and retain talented and engaged students. The Academy’s decision to bring strategic enrollment and management functions to Admissions recognizes that this work is foundational to institutional success. I am both honored and proud to lead this effort as the new Dean of Enrollment, in partnership with my colleagues here at Notre Dame. I would like to thank Diane Sander, who will continue as our High School Admissions Director, and Mia Wesner, who recently retired as Middle School Admissions Director, for their efforts to recruit and engage prospective Notre Dame students and their families. Last fall, we achieved a record enrollment of 540 students (385 high school and 155 middle school) from throughout the greater Philadelphia area. We also experienced a significant increase in requests for tours and information from families who wanted to learn more about a Notre Dame education. With the strategic plan as our guide, we extended recruitment opportunities by increasing transportation options for Notre Dame families. The Academy partnered with Malvern Preparatory School to offer transportation services from the Collegeville area and additional transportation options will be offered for the 2016-2017 school year.

In the weeks to come, you will hear me echo an important theme, “It takes a campus to recruit a student.” I am deeply impressed by the spirit and pride I have experienced as we showcase the benefits of a Notre Dame education to prospective students and families. The strength of our academic programs, our commitment to the faith tradition of the Catholic Church, and our collaborative spirit makes Notre Dame a truly special learning community. We are committed to attracting and enrolling young women who bring a diverse set of skills, talents, experiences, and passions that we know will make our community stronger and richer.

ADVANCEMENT OFFICE REPORT Thank you to the hundreds of alumnae, parents, and friends of Notre Dame who supported the Academy with a charitable contribution in the 2015-2016 fiscal year. The excellent educational experience provided to our talented young women would not be possible without the generous support of our community. Goal six of the Strategic Vision 2015-2020, OUR TIME to INSPIRE, calls us to create a culture of engagement and support. In the last fiscal year, we made great progress in implementing a sophisticated advancement and alumnae program. Highlights of the year include: • A record $540,000 was raised for Notre Dame’s Annual Fund, the Academy’s fundraising priority. Because tuition only covers 88% of the cost of educating our students, unrestricted contributions from alumnae, parents and friends are critically important in making up that difference. We are especially pleased that participation in the Annual Fund effort increased significantly among parents (47 new gifts) and alumnae (52 new gifts). The Annual Fund Leadership Committee, led by Chairs Robert and Susan Carney Fahey ’77 P’17, was instrumental to our success. • Alumnae programming continued to expand, with the addition of “Monday Evenings with Sister Nancy,” the development of President’s Advisory Councils in Washington, DC and New York City, an enhanced Reunion Weekend combined with the Sunflower Run, and the expansion of the Career Exploration Program (formerly Senior Inquiry) whereby current students shadow alumnae in their workplace. We loved spending time with the more than 500 alumnae who attended a Notre Dame event this year. • The Golf Classic and BLAST contributed additional funding to support our students. We are grateful to Frank Hallinan P’11’15’17 T and Andrew Willis P’08’13’18 T, Golf Classic Co-Chairs, and Alisa Czachor P’16’21, BLAST Chair, for their tireless efforts. • Thanks to our enthusiastic and dedicated Notre Dame Parents’ Association, numerous community building events were held during the school year and $90,000 was generously contributed to the school.

• With the conclusion of Phase I of the OUR TIME to INSPIRE Campaign, which included the completion of the athletic fields and Launfal Fieldhouse, planning began in earnest for Phase II of the effort, which will encompass restoration of the beloved Mansion and the construction of a STEM Center. We look forward to providing updates to the community on these important projects as we progress through the early leadership phaseof the capital campaign. As always, I welcome feedback and suggestions from all members of our community as we strive to strengthen our advancement efforts in support of current students and future generations of Notre Dame women. Why We Support the Annual Fund Steven and Francesca Molinari, parents of Isabelle ’19 Members of the 1856 Society Notre Dame plays such a significant part in our daughter Isabelle’s happiness and in our family’s happiness. She is set up for the very brightest of futures, and we are proud to support the Annual Fund for four very important reasons: • Notre Dame’s faith-based mission and values are directly aligned with our family. Notre Dame encourages students to take the values of our Catholic faith and bring them into the work world - to be a leader who is ethical, moral, and compassionate. Whether they go into politics, the business environment, or their own homes and communities, the world is very much in need of Notre Dame graduates. • The education our daughter receives is challenging and differentiated to meet her skills and abilities. That is so compelling to us. If you have an extraordinarily bright child who needs to be stimulated, Notre Dame is the place. Notre Dame helps every child, at all ability levels, achieve her potential.

• Notre Dame is a happy place! The faculty has found a way to balance the rigor of a college preparatory school with a learning environment that is filled with caring, kindness, compassion, and joy. There aren’t enough schools like Notre Dame. To make an impact in the world requires not just academic success, but a strong moral foundation. Notre Dame encourages that every day, in every way.

THE PRESIDENT’S CLUB The President’s Club seeks to encourage and recognize leadership donors to the Notre Dame Annual Fund. The Annual Fund provides the largest source of revenue after tuition. While Notre Dame relies on gifts of all sizes, leadership gifts are particularly critical to the Academy’s financial stability. Alumna Jackie McCabe Flanagan ’06 Inspiration Started in the Science Lab for Notre Dame Alumna Notre Dame graduate Jackie McCabe Flanagan ’06 is a graduate from Georgetown University and received her PhD in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She currently works at Bain & Company as a management consultant. “My first experience with hands-on lab research started at Notre Dame with Mrs. G. and Ms. Monck,” recalls Jackie. “At Notre Dame, I was exposed to a wide variety of classes – and loved history, government, mathematics and the sciences. I loved, and still love, learning and solving complex problems.” “Once at Georgetown, I found working in the lab to be a challenging and fulfilling addition to my daily coursework. I changed my major from government to biochemistry, and from my sophomore year on, I spent twenty hours a week and two summers in the lab researching drug resistance mechanisms in malaria parasites,” said Jackie. “It’s one thing to sit in interesting classes, and another thing to work hands-on in a lab – whether it be with malaria infected red blood cells or drug resistant cancer cells.” She graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown in 2010. Jackie continued her work in the sciences, earning a PhD in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 2015. She was a recipient of the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. Her research has been published in multiple scientific journals and focused on determining three-dimensional structures of proteins implicated in cancer pathogenesis. After graduation, Jackie accepted a job offer to be a consultant at Bain & Company in Washington, DC, where she serves clients both in healthcare and other industries to help them solve their most

complex and important problems. “I think it’s critical for women to be represented in the sciences and in the workforce,” said Jackie. “Women bring a unique perspective, we bring a different energy. If you’re tackling any issue, in the sciences, business, or law, you want the widest variety of perspectives, experiences, and thoughts. That is possible only if you have representation from both genders.” “I’m passionate about the value of an all girls’ education and I speak to that regularly,” said Jackie. “Notre Dame empowered me and gave me a voice; this voice has been critical in both my time in the lab and as a consultant.” “Whether it was inserting myself into a research lab and becoming part of a team, succeeding in grad school, or navigating this transition to management consulting, it’s been my strength, independence, and voice that have guided me. I know a large portion of that was developed and cemented at Notre Dame and I am extremely grateful,” said Jackie. When asked how she was inspired at Notre Dame, Jackie was quick to reply. “I was inspired by three things. First and foremost were the teachers. They were all very strong individuals who pushed us to new limits while at the same time being our friends and mentors. Then, I would say my classmates. Some of my best friends are from Notre Dame and these incredible relationships were inspired from my days at the Academy and are inspiring now. And, the third thing would be Notre Dame’s incredible sense of community. Notre Dame is a safe place to learn, to question, and to push boundaries. Why We Support Notre Dame Joe and Christine Carlini parents of Gabrielle ’15 and Victoria ’17 “When Joe and I moved to the Philadelphia area we had no preconceived ideas about our independent school choices,” recalls Christine Carlini. “We were in a great school district, but we are strong advocates for Catholic education and wanted that important moral formation for our children. We also felt strongly about the importance of a single-sex education.” “Of all the schools we visited, our eldest daughter, Gabrielle, chose Notre Dame and we are so happy she did. At Notre Dame, the students are given the freedom to make their own way and to be responsible for their own successes. The curriculum is personalized for the strengths of every student,” said Christine. Gabrielle, a National Merit Scholarship Winner, graduated from Notre Dame in 2015 and has just completed her first year as an engineering major at Vanderbilt University. “Engineering is still a male-dominated field,” said Christine. “Gabrielle feels competitive academically and she never feels intimidated in class. Notre Dame gave her the confidence that she can do anything.” “Our daughter Victoria is a senior at Notre Dame. History Teacher Shares Technology Innovations at AP College Board Conference Digital technology and STEM education are a natural fit for classroom integration. Bringing that technology into text-driven humanities courses is not quite as easy. At Notre Dame, faculty and students are using the power of Google technology to collaborate in a dynamic learning space that extends far beyond their classroom walls. History teacher Tom Verdi recently spoke about the use of Google Classroom technology to enhance instruction at the 60th annual College Board AP Conference held in Anaheim, California. Educators from across the country attended his session titled, “Transforming AP Instruction with Google Classroom.” Google Classroom integrates all Google apps, including Google Docs, Gmail, and Google Calendar in one software platform. Google Classroom allows teachers to organize resources, distribute and schedule assignments, communicate with students, and assess progress. “I was excited to show other educators how Google Classroom can be used instructionally, and not just as a tool to organize work,” said Verdi, who participated in a pilot test of the program before its release in 2014. “The AP US History class I teach is fast-paced and heavily content-driven. With Google Classroom, students can work on notes communally, prepare group presentations that can be shared with the class and archived, and access videos and other learning resources from any device, anytime, anywhere.”

Using Google Classroom, work is saved on the students’ Google drives and teachers can view their work and provide feedback as each student progresses through assignments. Verdi compares this opportunity to provide real-time feedback to his experience as a Notre Dame varsity golf coach. “Google Classroom turns teaching into coaching,” said Verdi. “I can interact with my students before their work is completed and leave comments and suggestions. Turning in assignments isn’t as high stakes and students can produce their best work.” “The conference was a great opportunity to share teaching experiences and learn how our colleagues around the country are using Google Classroom,” said Verdi. “I hope the educators who attended will be inspired to use this great teaching tool in their own classrooms.”

ENDOWED FUNDS Endowed Funds play an important role in the Academy of Notre Dame’s overall advancement program. The annual income from these funds provides tremendous benefit for the Academy’s students and helps us to fulfill our mission. These are active funds to which contributions may be made at any time. The generous donors listed below made a contribution to an endowed fund during the 2015-2016 fiscal year. Endowed Scholarship Funds ADAMS FAMILY FOUNDATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established in 2009 by Kim and Adrian Adams P’13’15, the income from this fund provides support to qualified students with demonstrated financial need. ALUMNAE PATHWAY TO LEARNING FUND The Alumnae Pathway to Learning was created in 1993 to encourage Notre Dame alumnae to show their appreciation for the education they received. Consisting of bricks engraved with donors’ names, the pathway flanks the sidewalk along Saint Julie Hall. Proceeds from the sale of engraved bricks support this endowed fund which assists students in need of financial aid. ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established in 2009 as an initiative of the Athletic Hall of Fame, which was created to recognize the accomplishments of Notre Dame alumnae and coaches who have brought distinction and honor to the Academy’s Athletic program, this fund provides tuition assistance to qualified students in need. ATTERBURY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND Created in 2011, the Atterbury Endowed Scholarship provides tuition assistance to students with demonstrated financial need. FEELY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established in 1988 by Frank and Jane Feeley Guzikowski, in loving memory of Jane M. Feely, this fund provides tuition support for a High School student in need of financial assistance. JOHN J. FINLEY, JR. ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established in 1994 by the family of Mildred and John J. Finley, Jr., to honor them for the countless times they quietly recognized and met the needs of the Sisters of Notre Dame and the Academy, this fund provides tuition assistance to a student in need, with preference given to an incoming sixth grader who exhibits both a desire to be of service to the less fortunate and a propensity for leadership. EDWARD E. FORD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established in 2004 in recognition of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1804, in as well as the anticipated celebration of 150 years of the founding of the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur in Philadelphia, this fund provides need-based financial aid to deserving High School students. HELEN SEERY FRANK ’50 SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established in 2007 by Patricia Cunningham McCloskey, Class of 1950, in memory of her classmate, Helen Seery Frank, a “most outstanding

friend and role model,” this scholarship provides tuition assistance to a High School student with demonstrated financial need. GUARINO FAMILY MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established in 2014 by Rosemary Guarino and the family and friends of Julius Michael Guarino, the Guarino Family Endowed Scholarship provides tuition assistance to one or more academically talented student(s) in need, with preference given to the daughter or granddaughter of an alumna of the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur. PORRECA MAIDA MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established in 2004 by Glorita Porreca Maida, graduate of the Class of 1941 from Academy of Notre Dame, Rittenhouse Square, in loving memory of her daughter, Virginia, and to honor her Music teacher, Sister Virginia Beirn, SND, the Porreca Maida Music Scholarship provides tuition assistance to one or more student(s) in need with preference given to those who demonstrate extraordinary musical ability and dedication to the study of Music. SISTER REGINA FUND FOR FINANCIAL AID The Sister Regina Fund for Financial Aid was established by the Academy of Notre Dame Board of Trustees in 2004 in honor of Sister Regina Finnegan, SND, to recognize her significant contributions to, and many efforts on behalf of, the Academy during her years at the helm of the school. The purpose of this endowed fund is to provide financial assistance to eligible students in need so they may begin or continue their educations at the Academy. VERA SUPPA SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established in 2008, the Vera Suppa Scholarship Fund honors Mrs. Suppa for her 54 years of teaching at the Academy of Notre Dame. The fund provides tuition assistance to a High School student in need, with preference given to a student who contributes to the musical and literary life of the Academy, reflecting Mrs. Suppa’s areas of expertise in English and Music.
