DENCITY ---------Villard 18: International Architectural and Urban design seminar jointly with Italian and French schools Academic year: 2016-2017

Existing conditions Piacenza is a city and commune in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, located at a major crossroads at the intersection between Bologna and Milan and has the typical characteristics of an Italian city. Placed near the riverfront of Po, with an enclosed historical city center and the contemporary city expanding circularly.

Siteplan of Piacenza

Proposal The aim is to broaden the center of the city and make sustainable a former industrial area. With the reuse of some buildings into important dense uses, the supplementation of various programs and with the emphasis on the design of the public space, Piacenza will have more than one core of interest. The existing buildings are restored by keeping the main structure and changing the use, the shell and the internal partitions of the buildings. The new uses are spaces for public gardens, cultivations and buildings such as a library, a museum with open air galleries, a theater, an educational and a medical center. Furthermore, programs like private offices, startup companies, retail shops and housing are added as well. Public activities, open-air spaces, reflecting pools and bridges encourage people to delight in walking in the city.
