INBRIEF FEDEX PLANS $121M DISTRIBUTION CENTER A $121.2 million regional FedEx distribution center is planned in Yonkers on a vacant motel site on Tuckahoe Road. The Yonkers Industrial Development Agency at its July 23 meeting approved financial incentives for construction of the 123,000-square-foot facility that will be built on the site of the former Tuckahoe Motor Inn. FedEx Corp. will receive up to $2.33 million in sales tax exemptions on construction materials and a temporary property tax abatement, Yonkers officials said. The facility, expected to create 43 new jobs and 38 full- and part-time jobs, will be relocated from the existing FedEx distribution center in the Bronx. Mayor Mike Spano, chairman of the Yonkers IDA board, in the IDA announcement said FedEx’s interest in Yonkers shows that the city’s effort to promote its proximity to transportation, New York City and the Hudson Valley is paying off.

CO-MEDICAL DIRECTORS NAMED AT WESTMED

NEW ROCHELLE BRINGS BACK LONGTIME COUNSEL The city of New Rochelle has hired a familiar face with the appointment of Kathleen

Gill as corporation counsel and chief of staff for policy and government affairs. She will succeed the previous counsel on corporate matters, Mark Blanchard, who is going into private practice. For nearly 20 years, from 1995 to 2013, Gill worked as counsel for the city in corporation affairs and for the planning and zoning boards. In 2013, Gill left the city and was hired by Iona College as general counsel and secretary to the board of trustees. “We are privileged to welcome back Kathleen Gill to our city staff,” said Charles B. Strome III, city manager, in a statement. “Her depth of knowledge and experience will prove invaluable during this important stage in New Rochelle’s development.” Gill will start in her new position Sept. 28.

PROGRAM WILL MANAGE STATE’S TECH-BIZ INVESTMENTS Empire State Development this week launched New York Ventures, a program that will oversee the state’s innovation investment funds, which together have $147 million available in capital for early-stage, technology-based businesses. The investment funds include the New York State Innovation Venture Capital Fund, a $100 million multistage fund; the Innovate NY Fund, a $45 million seed-stage fund; and the Minority- and Women-Owned Business Investment Fund, a $2 million seed-stage fund. Empire State Development officials said the Innovation Venture Capital Fund has closed on financing for two New York-based companies — Cureatr Inc., a mobile health care communications company, and Unite US, an organization that offers a free software platform to coordinate services for veteran and military families in their communities. Empire State Development officials said the Innovation Venture Capital Fund was raised from $50 million to $100 million by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo in his 2015-16 executive budget to identify and support entrepreneurs developing high-growth, technology-driven companies and to spur job creation statewide. The funding will also support the commercialization of technologies emerging from universities, labs, and business accelerators and incubators. Private-sector investors are expected to match the state innovation investments with at least $200 million in capital. Businesses receiving state funding must commit to either remain in or relocate to New York state.
