O

Welcome to Nappanee! n behalf of the businesses and residents in Nappanee, I would like to thank you for visiting Nappanee. We hope you enjoy your time with us and find some great reasons to stay a little longer!

Nappanee is home to a diverse economy with locally and internationally owned businesses. The Wa-Nee School System consistently ranks in the top of the state for quality of education. Our neighborhoods are safe and walkable. Our five community parks provide opportunities to enjoy nature and stay active. However, it is our caring and compassionate citizens that make Nappanee so successful. Taking pride in the community, our residents work together, continually looking for ways to improve. Our downtown continues to thrive with several boutique businesses and eateries. Coppes Commons, just a few blocks east of downtown, also has unique shops and dining in a historic cabinet shop. The Nappanee Center is a great place to explore the history and intriguing artifacts from the City’s past. The Community of WaNee Vision 2020 project is moving into the final stages on implementation. We have completed a new competition soccer field for NorthWood High School and the soccer club, located at Wellfield Park, and we recently opened a new Boys and Girls Club at Nappanee Elementary School. Family Christian Development Center will renovate and relocate services in the fall of 2020, moving into the former Boys and Girls Club at the Central School Building on north Main Street. Our Elder Haus Senior Activity Center, also located in the Central School Building, will be undergoing a makeover to expand and improve its services to area seniors by the end of the year. Nappanee is proud to partner with the businesses, schools, library, Boys and Girls Club, Family Christian Development Center, Chamber of Commerce, and local service clubs to provide the best place to live, learn, work, and play. We are always interested to hear from visitors and residents how we can make Nappanee even better. If you have questions or comments, please feel free to email, call, or stop by my office. Sincerely,

Mayor Phil Jenkins City of Nappanee 300 W. Lincoln Nappanee, IN 46550 (574) 773-2112 pjenkins@nappanee.org

Embrace the Pace that is only found in Nappanee 146 years ago, a little muddy bog was transformed into Nappanee when the B & O Railroad came through the area. Now in 2020, we invite you to come and enjoy a place to rest, relax, and embrace the pace. From our friendly locals, to our Amish community, Nappanee is known for its hospitality, friendliness, and above all welcoming spirit. We invite you to come and experience the Amish heritage, our local shops, eat in one of our local restaurants, and sample a lifestyle that is slower than the average city. Expect to see many Amish riding bicycles or driving buggies through the countryside and right down main street. Shop one of Indiana’s oldest family owned jewelry stores in our historic downtown, sip on a coffee while taking in the breathtaking sights of our downtown and beyond. Explore an old kitchen factory restored into shops that will take you back with smells of goodness only found in Grandma’s house of the past. Find quality built local and regional handmade items at many of our stores including furniture. Walk through our parks to discover the beauty of the trees, creek, and golf course. Take a walk on the bike and walking path and enjoy the art path off Oakland Avenue. Plan for a full day, then stay at one of our locally owned and operated motels. Have dinner with new friends at any of our restaurants. You’ll forget where you came from and embrace where you are. Parking is always free in Nappanee. Stop by the Nappanee Center which is open 6 days a week for your convenience. Inside check out the 10,000 square foot free Nappanee museum. Walk back into time and see who made Nappanee what it is today. Most importantly, we want you to enjoy your time in Nappanee and come back time and time again. From all of us in Nappanee, we say Welcome and Embrace the Pace that can only be found in Nappanee. Photos by Elkhart County Convention & Visitors Bureau

Early Nappanee P

rior to 1800, Nappanee was home to the Miami and Potawatomi Indians. In the early 1840’s, the first white settlers came to Union Township to take advantage of Indiana’s fertile land. “Onion was King” among the crops that put Nappanee on the map, including potatoes, hemp and mint, which thrived in the area’s muck soil. By 1875, shortly after the railroad came through, the village of Locke started to move south to Nappanee. Not only people but homes and businesses were sleighed to Nappanee. The Coppes and Mutschler Brothers Photo courtesy of Coppes Commons were amongst the earliest entrepreneurs, providing a way to make a living through their logging company, saw mill and box-making and furniture factories. In the last 140+ years, Nappanee has grown to become home to a population of over 6,700 with a diverse economy and unique cultures of old and new living and working together. Explore Nappanee History

hile visiting Nappanee, be sure to add the Nappanee Center at 302 W. Market Street to your itinerary. With over 10,000 sq. ft. of Nappanee history on display, you’ll be immersed in the city’s story as you enter the first jail cell and discover artifacts as extraordinary as a prototype space capsule developed by Aeronautical engineer, Lee Weaver, and a threewheeled Foo Car, inspired Photo by Mark Sties by the cartoons of Bill Holman. In the military room, you’ll find Lt. Col. Todd Beer’s Air Force One uniform and the story of his time as pilot for Presidents, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Many military items are on permanent display, with memorabilia, weapons, uniforms and more ranging from the Civil War to the Gulf War. The Center’s collection of “Hoosier Cabinets” and other kitchen furniture helps illustrate the story of how Nappanee became the Kitchen Capital of the World at the turn of the last century. Exporting thousands of cabinets across the country by rail saved cooks hundreds of steps in completing tasks like making an apple pie, according to a Coppes Bros. & Zook advertisement from the early 1920’s. Don’t forget to step inside one of the oldest homes in the city, built by businessman John Hartman in 1897. Need a laugh? Look no further than the Center’s display of cartoon strips, illustrations and other artifacts from Nappanee’s six nationally-known cartoonists – more than any other city can claim per capita! The museum is free of charge and is open Monday through Friday from 9-5 and Saturday from 9-4 (Sundays from 1-4 June through September). Come in today and journey into Nappanee’s past! Questions? Don’t hesitate to ask the Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce staff, also located inside the center. Enjoy a free cup of coffee or tea and access to the free wireless Internet.

These tags are available at Martin’s Supermarket for only $1.50 each Odd-Sized Trash: • Odd trash items will be picked up free of charge from each resident every month (2 items a month) • These items need to be prescheduled between Monday and Thursday and will only be picked up on Friday.
