“All About Fall + Fall Weddings” ISSUE

From the executive editor

September 2020 | Vol. 11 No. 6

Dear glo readers,

GLAM + STYLE

How are you? How was your summer? We made the most of it—spending a lot of time outside, going camping, working on home improvement projects and creating art. But, it hasn’t been easy. A new subject has emerged amidst the pandemic to further divide us all: to continue social distancing or not. And there’s a lot of judgement on both sides.

Fashion: Splurge-worthy Fall Fashion ................................................... 8 Beauty + Spa: Contouring 101 ............................................................. 10

My family and I are still social distancing. We get to set our own rules about how we deal with COVID. Have we broken some of our rules? We have. Why? Because we crave normal. We crave interaction. My girls miss their friends and grandparents and cousins. But I put my foot down again. COVID is worse now than it was in March when we were ALL sheltering in place. We did not make that sacrifice for nothing. We’ve had to make some concessions recently for our mental health—part of that being sending the girls back to daycare. That’s about all the risk we can manage right now. I know not everyone agrees. That’s ok. You get to make your own decisions, but I hope you stay safe and healthy. On another note, we are still here creating content for you each month. This issue is All About Fall + Fall Weddings. Be sure to check out the Fashion feature to find out what pieces you should invest in this season. And don’t miss the Beauty feature with a pictorial about contouring. Of course, we have our wedding features, including one about local brides who have had to adjust their plans due to COVID. As always, we appreciate you. Email us anytime with story ideas, feedback or a silly picture to brighten our day.

Splurge-worthy FALL FASHION By Lauren Caggiano

As summer days fade into autumnal splendor, it’s almost time for pumpkin-spiced everything, bonfires, shorter days and crisp evenings. Of course, a wardrobe refresh comes with the territory, as well. And after being quarantined for a few months and living in leggings, there’s no better time to make the effort to look and feel your best. But you don’t have to break the bank in the name of style. Take a cue from image consultants and fashionistas, pick a handful of staples to splurge on, and you’re guaranteed to look like a million bucks.

2

DENIM JACKETS: Jackets are one way to wear denim confidently. Robin Heller with All About You said this item is much revered because of its versatility. “They are definitely a staple in every wardrobe, can be worn with many different outfits, and never go out of style,” she said. There’s no shortage of different designs, colors, washes and silhouettes out there. Find one that speaks to you and can be worn with different outfits, and you have yourself a winner. 8

| SEPTEMBER GLO 2020 |

1

ANYTHING LEATHER: Black leather— or its vegan friendly cousin, faux leather — is sure to elevate any look. After all, they say black never goes out of style. Think thick, tailored pieces, leather trench coats with leather boots and matching, matte leather separates. Keep it casual with your favorite pair of jeans and sneakers, or add some drama and layer your leather over a form-fitting dress and statement pumps.

3

SOMETHING LEOPARD PRINT: This trend is not new, but it’s still around and very much now. Keep in mind animal prints are meant to be bold and in your face. If you prefer a more subdued look, consider a purse or accessory with such a pattern. Not one for subtlety? Think leopard print sweaters, dresses, pants and more.

KNEE-HIGH BOOTS:

4

(260) 459-2828 susansfashions.com

6340 W. Jefferson Blvd. Fort Wayne Covington Plaza

Move over booties, a more dramatic type of footwear is taking center stage this fall. Even better, there’s a knee-high boot for virtually every taste, whether you’re more into a preppy vibe or want something edgier, like a shin-tight version.

5

TRENCH COAT: Hello, military vibes! There’s a reason this has never gone out of style. It’s a classic look that flatters every body type. The clean-cut silhouette creates the lean shape and vertical line that says polished and poised. And the best part is you can pull it out again come spring. But not all trench coats are created equal. Opt for one made from premium quality fabrics, such as silk or cotton. Although more expensive than those made of polyester, it’s an investment-worthy piece because it’s a mainstay and won’t go out of style anytime soon.

Store hours: Mon.-Wed., Fri. 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Thurs. 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Sat. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Don’t miss the “Unbeleafable” sounds of fall!

How’s your hearing? Come find out. Welcome the new season with a complimentary 20 minutes hearing screening during the month of September.

There you have it, darling. These go-to items are proof that fashion doesn’t have to come with a huge price tag. These essentials will take your fall wardrobe to the next level — and you might even have some money left to treat yourself to that spa day you’ve been dreaming of. a photos: shutterstock.com

Contouring 101:

A How-to + What to Use

Step 2: Apply a highlighter

(either foundation, cream or powder that is 1 or 2 shades lighter than your skin tone) underneath your eyes, extending down to the tops of the cheeks. Apply this same highlighter to the bridge of your nose and up between your eyebrows, flowering out and over to the center of your forehead. You’ll also want to include a bit above your top lip, the center of your chin, and right in the center of your jawline on either side.

By Kristin King

The contouring trend has taken hold of the beauty industry over the last few years. You’ve likely heard of it, but you may be a bit stressed about attempting it. With beauty products and practices becoming more accessible through YouTube tutorials, all-in-one kits and lower price points for quality brands, it has given new life to the ways in which we can sculpt, shape and define our look from home. In order to master this technique, we spoke with Shirley Williams of Southwest Hair & Day Spa and received a step-by-step photo guide from Brittney Raines. So, grab your brushes and let’s get started! You’ve probably tackled the application of foundation, bronzer and blush either in your daily routine or just for a night out, but what can contouring do that varies from this? Williams gave us a little insight into the desired outcome of a contoured look: “[The] main reason people contour is to make their cheekbones stand out, to give them the appearance of a smaller forehead, a more angular jaw line, or a smaller looking nose.”

Step 3: Apply the contour (a foundation, cream or powder that is 1 or 2 shades darker than your skin tone) to the right and left areas of your forehead, slightly below the hairline. Apply this same product to the sides of your nose, tracing the highlight you created down the bridge. Move to below the cheeks right about where the jaw opens up swooping along under the highlighter applied to the cheekbones. You can also apply a tiny bit on the jawline to create a sharper look and give a slimmer appearance to your neck.

The real trick is to allow the makeup to enhance your features rather than mask them with over application. “You can use light and dark shades to create shadows and emphasize bone structure” she assured us. It’s about defining and sculpting to create a bold, yet natural look. Luckily for those new to the craft, beauty companies are offering all-in-one kits at varying price points to match your budget and your particular skin care needs. Raines used Mirabella products on her model. Here’s a look at her process and how you can apply it at home:

Step 1:

Determine your face shape and follow along with your bone structure and hairline. You’ll want to apply the products near those areas to give the face that sculpted look.

Step 4: Blend, blend, blend! With a blender ball or a brush, make sure to blend the products gently into the skin until the harsh lines are no longer visible. You can then apply a setting spray or powder to assure that your hard work goes noticed all day long! a Photo Tutorial Courtesy of Brittany Raines of Southwest Hair & Day Spa

My sister inspired me to go into medicine. She is one of the hardest working, most compassionate, gifted physicians I know. You organize free Medicare funding sessions so your patients know their options. What information do you want your patients to be aware of? We have hosted a variety of talks, including questions surrounding Medicare and understanding the lack of transparency in medicine regarding the range of prices for the exact same service. And the financial toxicity patients can suffer on their cancer journey. Your nominator for She Glows said you pick out the works of art on display in the oncology unit “so patients can meditate on them while they’re in treatment.” What types of pieces do you look for? As far as art for healing goes, it was my idea but Tricia [Cavender] of Rhapsody Gallery executed it with passion and dedication. She actually picks the artists and their artwork. The artists, who are mostly from Fort Wayne, have lent their artwork to our facility so our patients can enjoy local art while on their journey with us.

Born in India, Dr. Lakshmi Aggarwal emigrated to the U.S. when she was 25. Coming here to be with her husband, a cardiologist, she first lived on the East coast. It was there she did her medical residency and fellowship. Shortly after finishing that, she got a job in Fort Wayne at Fort Wayne Medical Oncology and Hematology, where she’s worked for 21 years. Dr. Aggarwal and her husband have two children. She was recently nominated for this feature by a glo reader, who called her ‘an unsung hero.’

WARM & COZY 2020 UPDATE Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 8th ANNUAL Warm & Cozy Fundraiser to benefit the Fort Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment Center on Wednesday, September 23rd will now be live-streamed.

In what other ways do you support the community? What’s your motivation? As far as community service, I can tell you I am truly embarrassed to talk about myself. I would rather pass through life being a fly on the wall. (I once called my Dad in India to tell him I was nominated for a service award and his response was, “So you are going to get a prize for doing your job!”). I had to laugh, but I agree that I have taken more from this community and haven’t given enough back. God willing, I have a plan to rectify that shortcoming. I have been so fortunate to have met some of the kindest, most loving friends in Fort Wayne. This is a wonderful community to raise a family and practice in. I hope to follow in the footsteps of those who laid down the ground work to serve this community. Dr. Aggarwal doesn’t enjoy the limelight much. In fact, she points to many others who inspire and teach her like the patients she serves and her team at Fort Wayne Oncology who serve “selflessly and with such dedication.” We agree with the reader who nominated her: she embodies humility and service and deserves the title ‘unsung hero.’ a

By Stacie Ball | Photo by Jeffrey Crane

Fifteen-year-old entrepreneur Madeline Phuong has built a business around two of her greatest passions: art and helping others. In a world where many teenagers spend their money on clothes and entertainment, Phuong has found a greater cause to pursue. She creates art, sells it and then donates all proceeds to non-profit pet organizations, ensuring pets can get the care they need. Her story of hard work and perseverance shows that determined women can make a difference, no matter her age. Phuong discovered her love for painting when she was 9 years old. Her passion for animals was also ignited around the same time when they rescued her dog, Roxie. Over the past six years, she developed a plan to combine the two, and by February 2018, she had started her own business called A Second Chance. She creates original artwork and prints it on blank notecards, prints and canvas tote-bags. These are sold at farmer’s markets, artists fairs and online. All the money she makes is donated to benefit local non-profit animal organizations. She even does commissioned artwork and donates those proceeds, as well.

“These donations sponsored two vaccination clinics that benefitted 355 pets in Fort Wayne,” Phuong said. “Through this, I have been able to connect to the many people and places that make up the Fort Wayne Community. The generous show of support and kindness by local businesses and complete strangers has overwhelmed me and allowed me to continue raising funds for local pets and their families.” One such animal organization Phuong donates to is the Humane Organization for the Prevention of Euthanasia (H.O.P.E.) for Animals. It provides low-cost spay, neuter and wellness services. “They have helped over 100,000 pets since their establishment and share my commitment to helping local pets and their parents,” Phuong explained. “Because of this, I chose to partner with H.O.P.E. for Animals to provide free vaccinations during Memorial Day week.”

In addition to painting, she participates in art workshops, Speech and Debate Team, Key Club and Science and Engineering Fairs. “I love all the activities I choose to do, so it is easy to make time for what I am passionate about,” she explained. “I have learned how to effectively manage my time and how to stay focused on what needs to get done.”

“I’m grateful the founders had a vision and passion to serve our Hispanic/Latino entrepreneurs and members,” he said. “I started as a member and was then elected as president for two consecutive terms. We have served many of our members and collaborated with infinite organizations and corporations.” Galindo plans to continue with the mission of the Greater Fort Wayne Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to advocate, promote and facilitate the success of Hispanic-Latino owned businesses in Allen and surrounding counties. “The GFWHCC board of directors strives to focus on the most effective and coordinated Hispanic/Latino business development efforts maximizing public and private sector involvement,” he explained. “This includes ensuring that Hispanic entrepreneurs have excellent access to capital, to the best educational training and technology programs, and to local business leaders who actively participate in economic planning and policy making.”

“I continue to serve and give back to the people who helped me when I was just starting and learning about the city,” he said. “I came to Fort Wayne without family and had to start from scratch. The GFWHCC sets out to overcome various challenges—including language, access to resources, equity and inclusion—faced by the Hispanic community in our city. “Currently, our Greater Fort Wayne Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, The Fort Wayne Black Chamber, the New Allen Alliance and the Greater Fort Wayne Inc. are joining forces to bridge the gaps, provide opportunities and inspire our communities to uplift Fort Wayne to be a diversified catalyst entrepreneurial city,” Galindo said. “It is an historic initiative that I’m proud to be part of.” Raised in Mexico and moving to the United States as a teen, Galindo has a personal relationship with his work at the GFWHCC. “Certainly, language was a barrier, acculturation was not easy, and the gastronomy was not the same,” he explained. “I witnessed all of the sacrifices and heartaches that my parents made for me to make it here and thrive.” Galindo credits his parents for being great role models. “My mother had a 6th grade education, but she was an entrepreneur, managed the finances well, and was adaptable to many situations. She had a gentle essence but was also a ferocious fighter,” he said. “Parkinson’s disease took her in 2009 but her remarkable spirit and teachings remain in my heart and mind every day. My father had technical schooling and was a land surveyor for most of his life. He always had a pen or pencil handy and always tried to teach me math and to solve algebra problems. To Show Your Friends You Care By Stacie Ball

We need our girlfriends now more than ever to make it through these stressful times. September is National Friendship Month, so what better time to choose a couple favorites from this list and show your besties how much you care?

3. Create a scrapbook.

7. Lend a hand.

4. Bake her favorite dessert.

Even when you’re busy, try to carve out a few minutes to listen to or help a friend in need. Offer a couple of times that you are free to talk longer if you are really in a pinch.

You can do this the old-fashioned way by gathering physical photos of special memories over the years and placing them in a scrapbook. It can be as simple or elaborate as you want it to be. There are also many programs online like Shutterfly, Chatbooks or Freeprintsphotobooks that allow you to create a scrapbook with digital photos and have it mailed to your friend.

1. Share a bottle of wine.

One of the best ways to talk to your friends is with a delicious beverage in hand. Not a wine drinker? Have a conversation over a pot of coffee or tea. You might even decide to make it a weekly or monthly appointment where you experiment with different flavors and creamers.

2. Write a letter.

It is pretty exciting to get mail from a loved one instead of another bill. It’s also a great way to show you care while maintaining social distancing. Use pretty stationary, fancy ink and stamps or stickers. Tell what has been happening in your life or what things make your friend so special to you.

18

| SEPTEMBER GLO 2020 |

Even if all you can manage are break n’ bake cookies, your friend will appreciate the time you put in to make her a sweet treat.

5. Send or deliver a care package.

Gather some fun bath bombs, lotions, loofahs, a glo Magazine, or anything else you and/or your friend would use for a day of self-pampering. Put it all in a pretty bag or box with some tissue paper and a cute “Thinking of you” note.

6. Take a trip or walk together.

The sky is the limit here. It can be as simple as a walk around the neighborhood, an afternoon shopping trip, or even a weekend girls’ getaway.

Offer to help complete a project. Or offer to watch the kids and/or cook dinner while she works.

8. Make time for her. 9. Listen.

Sometimes all a girl wants is someone to listen to her. Try to minimize distractions and stay focused on your friend. Ask relevant questions; try not to judge or steer the conversation.

10. Post a pic on social media.

We like to document the best parts of our lives on social media. What better way to show a friend she is important than posting a current picture or memory with a caption explaining how fun or great she is. a photos: shutterstock.com

Tiana Maclin

Saying‘I Do’ during COVID By Jaclyn Youhana Garver

If 2020 were any ol’ year, Tiana Maclin would be getting married sooner. In Fort Wayne. With a more elaborate wedding. But 2020 is nothing if not unprecedented, and Maclin’s wedding looks a little different than the one she imagined—all because of the coronavirus. For one, COVID-19 means getting married at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum in Auburn. Maclin reasons that as a smaller city, Auburn is more likely to be safer than Fort Wayne should the coronavirus linger into summer 2021. “It’s not the Fort Wayne city wedding I thought of,” she said, “but we’re making adjustments.

It’s mostly family and close friends. We can’t see getting married without them there, and I want them to feel comfortable.” Her guest list is large—220+ people—and her grandparents are in their 80s; their health and comfort is a priority. Then, of course, there are the financials.

Maclin works in sales and advertising, and part of her income is commission-based. Company advertising is down, which means commission is down. Her fiancé is a contractor, and his workflow has slowed, too. As a result, they’re paying extra attention to their budget. When Maclin started looking at 2021 wedding dates—not in planning mode, but to get an idea of what was available—she was surprised to find how quickly everything was filling up. That’s due in large part to 2020 brides: “Venues are being more flexible with couples who need to postpone their 2020 weddings,” she said, “which means 2021 dates are going fast.

“The ripple effect is huge,” Maclin said. “Even if we wanted to get married earlier, we wouldn’t be able to have our reception because everything is booked.” Because so many brides have moved their wedding dates, New Haven’s Erika Weidenmiller was able to book a favorite Fort Wayne venue this fall, which is when she’d hoped to get married. But that means paying attention to details that might not otherwise have garnered the same amount of attention: How close are the reception tables to one another? How many people are seated at each table? What percent of her guest list will actually show up, especially her Illinois family members? Will a dinner buffet even work? Actually, it will: Instead of guests serving themselves, caterer employees in protective gear will plate the food, and all the dishware is disposable. The biggest change to Weidenmiller’s plans is the honeymoon: She and her fiancé had planned a December trip to Hawaii, and that’s postponed indefinitely. “We know we’ll have it one day,” she said. And there’s the contingency plan; should the United States have another spike in the number of coronavirus cases and/or experience another mandatory shutdown, Weidenmiller plans to scale back her wedding to a mini-ceremony, which she can announce to guests on her wedding website. “When I speak to our venue,” she said, “I have to be mindful of the fact that they have to do what’s right for their place.” a

Wedding Dates to Avoid By Amber Bouthot

There are so many decisions to make when planning a wedding—and one of the most important is the date. Some couples desire a certain season; some an exact date for sentimental reasons. Whatever the case, there are some dates in the coming year couples should avoid. Personally significant dates: Be sure to check in with your family for graduation dates, anniversaries and milestone birthdays. It’s not a bad idea to check the events calendar in the town you wish to get married in for large conventions that may interfere with your big day. If people are traveling from out of town and will need lodging. Holiday weekends: While it may be tempting to plan your wedding over a three-day weekend, cost of travel can often be higher for your out of town guests. Memorial Day, May 29 - 31, 2021 Independence Day, July 4, 2021 Labor Day, weekend of September 4 - 6, 2021 Thanksgiving, November 25, 2021

Palm Sunday, March 28, 2021 Easter, April 4, 2021 Rosh Hashanah, September 6 – 8, 2021 Yom Kippur, September 15 – 16, 2021 Hanukkah, November 28 – December 6, 2021 Christmas, December 25, 2021 Kwanzaa, December 26, 2020 – Jan 1, 2021 Major sporting events: If you’re die-hard sports fans—or if you’re worried your guests might have a hard time choosing between your wedding date and the big game—avoid getting married during popular sporting events. Super Bowl, February 7, 2021 Final Four/March Madness, April 3 – 5, 2021

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day: Many families have standing traditions for these holidays. Be sure to check in with your mom or dad to make sure they don’t mind sharing the weekend if you decide to host your wedding then. Mother’s Day, weekend of May 8 - 9, 2021 Father’s Day, weekend of June 19 - 20, 2021

Religious and Cultural Holidays: Be mindful of religious and cultural holidays (your own and those of your guests) when picking out your wedding date. There may even be restrictions at your house of worship as to whether you’re allowed to marry at these times.

Unlucky dates: If you’re superstitious you might want to watch out for these historically inauspicious days from across several cultures when selecting your wedding date. Ides of March, March 15, 2021 Friday the 13th, August 13, 2021 Leap Years, 2024 a

On Her Nightstand By Wendy Stein

Beth Goldsmith, owner of Sold by the Gold, earned a BS in education and an MS in education with a minor in business from Illinois State University. She began working as a REALTOR® and founded Sold by the Gold in 1993. In addition to enjoying her work, Beth proudly serves as Chair of the Greater Fort Wayne, Inc. Board of Directors. She is also passionate about her commitment to raise funds for cancer care and research. She loves to travel and view architectural wonders from all over the world and pursues opportunities to participate in just about any outdoor adventure.

What are you currently reading? “Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company That Addicted America” by Beth Macy. It’s a fascinating and disturbing account of America’s worst healthcare crisis, the opioid epidemic. Everyone should read this. Also, “Strategic Doing: Ten Skills for Agile Leadership” by Ed Morrison, Scott Hutchison, Elizabeth Nilsen, Janyce Fadden and Nancy Franklin. Since the authors are from Purdue University and offer Strategic Doing workshops, I appreciate the lessons that companies and communities need to harness the power of true collaboration. I just finished reading “Blood Defense” by Marcia Clark. After watching the docudrama about the OJ Simpson trial and learning more about the prosecuting attorney, Marcia Clark, I thought it would be interesting to read one of her fictional legal thrillers. She is a pretty good writer and I look forward to reading another one of her books. In early 2019 I read “Fascism: A Warning” by Madeleine Albright and want to recommend it to EVERYONE. She is not only insightful about our history but forthright about future concerns. I only finish books I enjoy reading. There are so many great books to read and I no longer want to spend my time “laboring through” an author that does not capture my interest. Usually I am reading 2 or 3 genres of books at the same time. I love “brain candy” at night before bed (legal thriller, mystery, sappy love story). In the early morning, I read personal or professional development while drinking coffee.

What’s your favorite book of all time? That is a tough question. One of my favorites is “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl. I have read it at 3 different times in my life and always gained wisdom from it. I also loved the entire Harry Potter series. I have read them, watched the movies, and the most fun was listening to the audio books. It was great fun to stay in the same hotel where J.K. Rowling stayed when penning her first book in the series. There is a room marked the J.K. Rowling room. a

Making a Difference in Infant Mortality by Mary Jane Bogle

Most people in Allen County are unaware of our dismal record when it comes to infant and maternal mortality. According to Footprints Fort Wayne, a collaborative effort to improve Allen County’s infant mortality rate, Allen County’s infant mortality rate in 2017 was 7.3, as compared to the national rate of 5.9.

Ethel Massing

Paige Wilkins

Naturally, these numbers are alarming and not just for new or expectant mothers. This rate affects all of us, as Ethel Massing, innovation project specialist at the Parkview Mirro Center for Research & Innovation, explained. “The infant mortality rate is really the canary in the coal mine,” she said. “A high infant mortality rate means other healthcare issues are prevalent in our community.”

contribute to infant mortality. Mothers without ready access to healthcare, either before, during or after the pregnancy, are also at higher risk. Thankfully, these numbers don’t tell the whole story. Both Wilkins and Massing are spearheading significant efforts to change Allen County’s infant mortality rate. Here are a few ways they’re making an impact. Healthy Mom and Baby Innovation Competition A collaborative effort between Parkview Health and MATTER (a healthcare startup incubator, community nexus and corporate innovation accelerator), the Healthy Mom and Baby Innovation Competition issued a global call in 2020 to combat the infant mortality rate in Allen County. Candlelit Therapy, a prenatal mental health startup aimed at helping underserved women navigate pregnancy and postpartum, was selected as the overall winner of the Innovation Competition. Education and Advocacy Healthier Moms and Babies is making significant strides in working with atrisk families from pre-pregnancy until a baby turns two. Through home visits, healthcare advocacy and prenatal and postnatal health education support, Healthier Moms and Babies is working to reach their vision of “Every baby. Born healthy.” Programs include Healthy Start, Nurse Family Partnership, Baby & Me Tobacco Free, Fatherhood Initiative, Cribs for Kids and Own Your Journey, which connects participants with other women who share similar goals and helps them learn how they can lead a healthy life for themselves and their babies.

Paige Wilkins, executive director of Healthier Moms and Babies, agrees. “Indiana doesn’t rank well in overall health outcomes,” she said. “We have high obesity and diabetes rates, and we rank 46th in the nation for people who smoke.”

Prematurity Awareness Walk This virtual event on October 24, 2020, will feature a guest speaker and a flower drop to honor all preterm babies in the community, with the goal of celebrating the first steps, first words, first birthdays of Allen County’s tiniest neighbors. For more information or to purchase a yard sign to help support this event, contact Healthier Moms and Babies at (260) 469-4076. a

In addition, Allen County is experiencing significant health disparities by zip code and race. According to Footprints Fort Wayne, “African American families are over twice as likely to experience the loss of a baby.”

Resources:

Multiple issues affect these statistics. For example, living in a community marked by violence can result in preterm births and/or preeclampsia. Both 24

Questions like these do have answers. And while it’s always best to speak with your employer about your specific situation, here are a few guidelines to help you map out your maternity leave.

FEATURE | Motherhood

• K NOW YOUR RIGHTS. In 1993, Congress passed the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Basically, this federal law states that your employer can’t fire you for taking time off after the baby comes. To be eligible, you need to work for a company with 50+ employees within 75 miles of the workplace. You also need to have worked for this employer for 12 months, or 1,250 hours of service, during the previous 12-month period. Also note that FMLA guarantees unpaid leave, so unless you make other arrangements, you won’t be getting a paycheck during your time off. shutterstock.com

Of course, this doesn’t mean that if you don’t meet these guidelines, you are going to lose your job when the baby comes. Your employer might still hold your job and benefits package, but the company isn’t required by law to do so.

Mapping Out Maternity Leave by Mary Jane Bogle

Discovering you’re expecting a new addition to the family, whether through birth or adoption, is an exciting moment for moms-to-be. But with that excitement comes a wide range of questions, and not just about when your baby will sleep through the night or start teething. What can I expect from my employer during these next few months? Will I still have my job? Benefits? I want to take time off to enjoy my new baby, but can I afford it?

Another federal law moms-to-be need to know is the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, which protects pregnant women from discrimination and harassment at work. Note that the employer must have at least 15 employees for this law to apply. • U NDERSTAND YOUR BENEFITS PACKAGE. If your employer offers paid time off, which could include PTO, vacation time, sick time or personal time, the company will likely require you to take the paid time off concurrently with the Family Medical Leave request. Some companies also offer paid, short-term disability plans, which allow you to stay home and still get paid, or partially paid, during your recovery. These plans vary widely, so it’s best to check with your specific company to understand the details, including whether or not you need to pay a premium for this plan and how long you need to hold the policy before the benefits apply. You also need to take some time to understand your insurance benefits. Who has the better insurance plan, you or your spouse? You’ll want to know how and when to add the new baby to the plan. • P LAN AHEAD. No matter what your company offers, you’ll want to save ahead to cover all those new expenses your little one will bring. Try to finish large projects before you leave, if possible, and delegate your responsibilities, leaving a clear plan for decision making while you’re gone. Then get ready to bond with that new bundle of joy! a

Zion National Park

self? Well, no, not so much. She hiked 18 miles total – in one day. Exhausting and strenuous, but she did it. Wallace said it was “entirely worth it and I would do it again in a heartbeat.” By Emily LaRue

For local photographer Kasey Wallace, plan B turned out to be the best plan. Truly though, when plan B is hiking through the red, cream and pink sandstone cliffs and canyons of Utah’s Zion National Park, the odds are in your favor. Wallace, a wedding and portrait photographer by trade, runs her own business, Kasey Wallace Photo. And, while her business requires creativity and vision, it doesn’t require strenuous climbing. So how did she find herself in this wild locale, so far from our beloved Midwest? Especially when she had never been farther west than Chicago? Wallace and her boyfriend had already been planning a visit to Las Vegas in late May, but with the world so unpredictable lately, plans changed. “We were originally supposed to be in Las Vegas for a concert and opera that weekend, however, when Covid-19 caused cancellations everywhere, that plan was out. We wanted to still go adventuring,” said Wallace. They realized Zion was still basically open (with only a few trails closed), and Wallace’s boyfriend is an avid distance hiker. She was game, so the 3-day whirlwind vacation was put into action. Since she’d never hiked before, you might think she would take it slowly or maybe try to pace her-

Her favorite part of the trip were the mountains. “Seeing the mountains, hiking in the mountains, having dinner at a restaurant outside with a view of the mountains - it was all beautiful and memorable” she said. And as far as the hiking goes, the best part hands down Wallace said, was the stunning Virgin River. Zion National Park, located in southwestern Utah, is 165 miles from Las Vegas. According to the National Park Service, hiking is a popular

activity while visiting the park and trails can accommodate nearly any fitness level, as they range from easy to strenuous. But hiking is just one of the park’s offerings. People also come for bicycling, canyoneering and camping, or they stay in the park to watch the sunset and then do some stargazing. Zion protects their dark sky so the Milky Way can be viewed from the park. For Wallace, hiking this natural wonder turned out to be a life-changing experience. She said, “The hiking bug has definitely bitten me. We have more hiking trips all over the US tentatively planned. It was emotionally awakening, as well as feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment, especially for my first hiking experience ever.” Her final thoughts on plan B? “I would absolutely recommend [Zion]. It’s incredibly beautiful and fulfilling. It may be cliché to say, but the experience changed me for the better and I can’t wait to get out there again,” she said. a | SEPTEMBER GLO 2020 |

ALL ABOUT YOU | Glo-roscopes

SEPTEMBER 2020

By Julie Young

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

When life hands you lemons, you will always find a way to make lemonade. You are grounded and analytical, and you let nothing throw you for a loop. Need to find some extra money for an unexpected expense? Crunch the numbers and you’ll find what you need.

You are passionate and sensitive to the needs and feelings of others and that is why everyone turns to you when the going gets tough. Put that ability to use this month with someone close to you who is going to need your support. You may not be a trained social worker, but you are the next best thing.

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

You crave balance and serenity and like it best when life has little drama. Naturally, this year has been difficult for you, but as you try to even out the scales during this last quarter, you are beginning to adjust to this new normal. Blessings abound, but only if you recognize them.

If there are two words that describe you, it is fearless and innovative. You are always willing to operate outside the box and take a creative chance especially when there is a need for a bold, independent thinker. The more unorthodox, the better as far as you are concerned.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

Your creativity is unconventional, and you don’t tend to wear your emotions on your sleeve. That doesn’t mean you don’t care nor does it mean that you are unaffected by the world around you. But others are not as perceptive as you, so you may have to drop a lot of hints to let family and friends know that you need help.

Headstrong and practical, you let nothing stand in your way of accomplishment. In fact, you take great pride in pulling off the seemingly impossible. This month will require you to stand firm against difficult obstacles. Problems arise, but it’s nothing you can’t overcome.

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)

You are curious and charismatic but you also lose interest quickly and tend to move on to the next thing very quickly. This perplexes the people in your social circle who may feel left behind when your curiosity runs its course. Don’t let them get the wrong idea.

You are the kind of person who dreams big but also knows how to make those dreams come true. People are amazed by your chutzpah and the way you always seem to fall into the most unusual situations. Expect to be in another unique scenario this month.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19) As a born influencer, you are accustomed to everyone wanting to bask in your limelight and share in a little of your glory. Of course, with great power comes great responsibility, so make sure you look before you leap. You may be fine, but you don’t know who might be riding on your coattails without a parachute.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18) You are an extrovert who gains energy from talking to others, sharing your knowledge and helping to solve problems. If you have considered a career change, this is the month to make a move. Consider sociology, journalism or education and see if those fields fit your personality. 30

| SEPTEMBER GLO 2020 |

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

Cancer (June 21 - July 22) You are an intuitive person and a born nurturer who thrives in environments that allow you to care for and develop a deep personal relationship with others. No wonder your home is where everyone congregates, and here’s hoping this month will give you a chance to celebrate with family members who miss you.

Leo (July 23 - August 22) Being out of the spotlight has been hard on you dear Leo and you can’t wait to get back on life’s stage. As assured and confident as you are, you have a lot to share and you need a live audience in order to feel alive. Zoom meetings and video clips aren’t enough. Here’s hoping you’ll be able to connect with more people this month. a
