New school faces

Photo - submitted By Lachlan Ellis Hundreds of Moorabool kids had their first day at school last week, beginning their exciting education journeys at primary schools across the Shire. In total, 533 Foundation students have enrolled across 17 primary schools in Moorabool – down from 584 last year, a decrease of almost 9 per cent. The decrease in enrolments is seen most sharply in schools in more rural parts of Moorabool: for example, Bungaree had no Preps enrol, compared to 5 last year, and St Mary’s Clarkes Hill had 1, compared to 5 in 2021. On the other hand, all but one Bacchus Marsh-based primary school had Foundation enrolments increase. Bacchus Marsh Primary School had the most enrolments with 112, compared to 96 last year. St Bernard’s has welcomed 57 Foundation students, up from 49. Bacchus Marsh Grammar had the second-most enrolments in Moorabool with 103 at its Maddingley Campus, while Darley had the third-most with 80. Pentland Primary saw its Foundation enrolments rise from 63 to 65. Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said he wasn’t surprised by the disparity in enrolments between residential and rural Moorabool, given the “cyclic” ups and downs in enrolment figures

for rural areas – but he hopes Council can foster more stable growth. “In the rural areas of Moorabool, the average age is somewhat older than in the residential areas, where there’s a number of young people coming in and having children. So I suppose it doesn’t surprise me that there is a downward trend in rural enrolments,” Cr Sullivan told the Moorabool News. “There’s residential growth in Bacchus Marsh and Ballan, so there’s more people coming in…but there’s an inability for people to move into some more regional areas, because there’s no opportunity to build new homes, so that affects enrolments. “That’s one of the things Council is hoping to address in advocating for sewerage in Wallace and Bungaree, which might arrest that trend.” Cr Sullivan hopes this year will be more stable for students than the past two years have been, with the first year at school particularly crucial in a child’s development. “The first year of school is very important … I do feel sorry for children who’ve had interrupted learning. I’m not in education, but one thing I’ve observed is socialisation and learning to get on with others has been disrupted,” he said. “It would be a great disadvantage for them if this stop-start process in education continues.” more pictures page 14

People power deny access
By Helen Tatchell A burst hose from a farm water tanker showered AusNet representatives and their vehicle last Friday, after being denied access to a property in Bunding by landowners. Over 30 vehicles and 50 people attended Gerald Conroy’s property on Stonehut Lane, supporting the ‘Stop AusNet’s Towers’ campaign at 8.30am, after being advised the Western Victoria Transmission Network Project (WVTNP) people would be requiring access. Mr Conroy received a text message advising they were “running late….and can’t make 8.30 as planned. Will contact you later this morning when we firm up a time”. They then arrived four hours later. Mr Conroy had locked his gates and positioned farm machinery to deny access after being told “AusNet contractors and 12 security guards” will attempt to force access to the property. “The same thugs that rocked my 75-year-old cousin off his gate last week,” Mr Conroy told a representative on the roadside. Jamahl Waddington is the WVTNP Landowner Liaison and was not aware of the incident. The proposed route is set to navigate its way through over 60km of prime rural and agricultural farmland within the Moorabool Shire. The total route is 190km with 85 metre towers of 500Kv high voltage overhead transmission lines. Mr Waddington was at odds as to why they were denied access on the day. “The ecology is still an important part of the thing, and I am happy to sit down and debate the project with you,” he said. “Today though, I am not here debating, I am here to tell you this project is not going to have a massive impact on you and your property. Our job is to determine if this thing is feasible or not.” Mr Conroy said all they are doing is “trying to wear us down”. “Your job,” he told Mr Waddington, “is a land access agent and to break us, to get your people in here to do it, and you

Roger Lowery is also an effected landowner and said once the EES gets through there is only 30-days to review it. “It is a done deal. You have a contract to deliver a project, that’s all you care about,” he said. “I’ve told you once and I will tell you again, a private company is not putting an eyesore infrastructure that is going to destroy our community and our environment, that will only deliver power to Melbourne, and not charge them anything for it, at our cost. That is what you are doing, destroying our lives and just ticking a box,” Mr Lowery told Mr Waddington. “You say you are allowed on our properties, we don’t. That Act was made for the SEC 50-years ago, so if you’re entitled to come on our properties go and get a court order and we’ll fight it in court.” Mr Waddington said landowner lawyers have looked at it and they are allowed to access under Section 93. “I don’t live here so I don’t understand the day-to-day impacts.” Mr Conroy said, “well if you read our numerous emails you will understand the impacts we face day-to-day”. When asked by Mr Conroy to explain “to us how we are an important part of this project, Shay Middlemiss (WVTNP Landowner Engagement Team) said it is because this is your
property as you said. “We are here respectfully, and we want to work with you. We do have an obligation under the EES,” she said. “We have considered the underground option and released an underground summary report, and it came out that the length of the project and the constructability, that overhead transmission line is the most suitable option, and that will be addressed in the Environmental Effect Statement.” Mr Waddington then said they need to work out where the route is going to go. “What information do you think we haven’t told you?” he asked. Mr Lowery responded, “where are the towers are going.” Ms Middliemiss added, “the project is not approved for construction yet, we have a proposed route and that is why we don’t have our tower locations.” “You have put hate and venom in our hearts which is not us,” Mr Lowery said. “…and we hate that position you have put us in because we followed the process to consult, we put pins on maps, listened to your webinars, typed questions in and they get ignored. We then go to community consultation and get told absolutely nothing. The whole thing has been a sham all the way through. You are now dealing with a community that has been totally lied to.” Loretta Conroy had the final say before the four WVTNP representatives left the roadside. “Listen to the people that live on the land,” she said. “You cannot do an ecological study in half an hour and if you want to do that study, buy a property and do it.” The Moorabool News asked Mr Waddington and Ms Middlemiss, why do WVTNP say to underground the project would cost 15 times more, and Moorabool Shire Council spent thousands of dollars on an independent study that revealed the cost would only be seven times? “We are not talking to the press,” he said. Questions have been sent via email to WVTNP and we are yet to receive a response.

A-maize-ing music event
By Jane Gardner In the early days of the Covid-19 lockdowns, two friends, Sharyn Jury and Fiona Williams (both singers in bands) noticed a growing number of their musical friends posting videos of themselves on social media, playing and singing at home. Sharyn and Fiona realised how much everyone missed playing music together, so they decided to create an online platform for local musicians to perform and share their talents. Thus, ‘The Stage is Yours, Central Highlands’ was born. This Facebook page provided a much-needed place for like-minded musicians to connect with others, stay motivated, develop and expand their skills and importantly, provide an audience. Many months and 300 members later, lockdowns lifted and ‘The Stage is Yours, Central Highlands’ formed a Working Group, which was successful in securing a $3,000 community grant from Moorabool Shire Council to host a series of live gigs around Moorabool.
The first of these three events will be hosted by Donegan’s Farm in Wallace, as part of their ‘Graze in the Maize’ season. It kicks off this Sunday 13 February. For only $10 a ticket, patrons can wind their way through a maize-maze to a large clearing, where from 12 noon until 6pm, eight local bands and solo musicians will perform across two separate stages. The clearing also includes a food hut and a bar. (BYO chairs, rugs and shade, But no BYO food or drink.) This exciting afternoon of local live music, wine, beer and food, set amongst the towering maize, will feature Jen Hawley, Heartbeat, Wicked Grin, Rock ‘n Co, Crimson Haze, Five O’clock Charlie, Andrew Borg, and Sharyn Jury and the Mellowmen. So, from humble beginnings, Sharyn and Fiona have transformed their online platform into something even more wonderful. And by hosting the first live event in the maize, it seems it really is true that from little things, big things grow. Rubbish fire in truck
By Lachlan Ellis A truck fire in Gordon has ended as well as a fire can – with no injuries, and no damage, after vehicles from four local brigades attended. The CFA was alerted to the truck fire last Monday, with a CFA Media spokesperson telling the Moorabool News that rubbish in the truck was to blame. “CFA was notified at 10:16 (am) on 31 January to reports of a truck fire on the Western Freeway at Gordon. It’s understood the driver managed to pull off the freeway and park the vehicle near the Gordan CFA Station,” the spokesperson said. “The truck was moved to a VicRoads dump site. The rubbish was unloaded from the truck and an excavator was brought in to pull it all apart. The fire was extinguished, and the scene declared safe. There was no damage to the truck itself. “The cause was contents within the rubbish, causing it to smoulder.” Five CFA vehicles attended the scene from Ballan, Gordon, Millbrook, and Wallace brigades along with Victoria Police.
The course is in the best condition it’s been for years, and the Bacchus Marsh West Golf Club is welcoming players of all skill levels to come down and give golf a go. The Club is hosting a 3-week Adult Beginner Program for just $40, from 6 – 7 pm on Friday February 11, 18, and 25. The program will be run by PGA-accredited Golf Victoria coach, Tony Collier, who will also be running a junior clinic on the same days. Golf clubs will be available for hire. President of the Club’s Ladies Committee, Wendy Knipe, said the Club was eager to present golf as a family game for all ages. “We understand that if you come and play 18 holes as a mother with children, it does take time out of your day – that can be a factor in some women being hesitant to play. But golf can be a family thing…the husband doesn’t just need to go to play golf, he can bring his wife and children, and we can cater for all of them,” Ms Knipe told the Moorabool News. “Our course has improved in leaps and bounds...it’s been great that we’ve been able to collaborate with a couple of the local developers on the right-hand side of the course, they’ve provided run-off from their estate,” she said. Ms Knipe said she has been a member for 17 years, and the course is the best it’s ever looked. “It’s purely volunteer-run, so it’s an absolute credit to everyone who does any kind of work on the course.” The Bacchus Marsh West Golf Club will mark its 50th anniversary this year, and while the pandemic continues making long-term planning tricky, the Club hopes to mark the occasion a social event. “As the club has been so COVID aware of late, we haven’t planned too far ahead at this stage. The 50th anniversary will be held this year, probably around April, subject to COVID health regulations and will be a social event for all past and present members & volunteers,” Ms Knipe said. “The club is excited by the progress and improvement in the club over recent years, and is keen to share it with all members past and present. They’re just folk in the racing industry By Lachlan Ellis A former female jockey is trying to get her horse a spot in the world’s richest mile race, with horses selected by public vote – and voting could net you $250,000. Kassie Furness grew up in Ballan but now owns a stable in Bendigo, where she met her husband, horse trainer Josh Julius. The couple own stakes in a 5-year-old gelding named Just Folk, which is on the cusp of selection in The All-Star Mile – a race where only 15 competitors are chosen by public vote. The All-Star Mile will be held on 19 March at Flemington Racecourse, with voting for the competitors closing this Sunday, 13 February. At the time of writing, Just Folk sits 17th (1050 votes) – around 100 votes shy of the qualifying 15th position, with the Melbourne Cup 2021 winner Verry Elleegant leading the field on over 8600 votes. Ms Furness said just being on a list next to famous trainers such as Chris Waller and Mick Price was an honour. “I’ve been involved with horses for almost ten years now. When I was young, I was into horses, but gave it up and started studying business, and working at a bar. I needed a bit of extra money and started working as a stable hand…and the rest was history,” she told the Moorabool News. Things aren’t as bad as we thought they were going to be with COVID, we’re expecting a pretty big crowd on the day,” Mr Keyte told the Moorabool News. Four matches will be played across the day, consisting of four and five chukka matches. “The prize-giving and the auction will be at the end of the day, at 4 o’clock.” With the property sold, the question has been raised whether this event will be the last – but Mr Keyte couldn’t confirm or deny it. “We can probably get one more in, the new owners don’t take over until the end of February 2023. But I don’t know for sure…it could be the last, who knows,” he said. Marquees are sold out, however, tickets for the VIP marquee are still available for $125 per person, which includes food and drink, while refreshments will also be available for purchase on the day to the general public. Speaking with the Moorabool News in January, Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said, “in some businesses, 25 per cent of staff are away, probably for COVID-related reasons”, and similar circumstances could prove a problem for Council. But Council CEO Derek Madden said Council was ready for the challenge. “As with many sectors and organisations, the impact of COVID-19 is being felt at Moorabool Shire. Council is supporting employees and workplace contacts who are affected by COVID-19 as the health and wellbeing of our employees and community is our primary focus; this is of course having an impact on resources,” he told the Moorabool News. “However, Council employees continue to work tirelessly to deliver services and support our community. Council is well-prepared, and has detailed plans in place to ensure services continue to be delivered during these unprecedented and difficult times.”

Awards for young samaritans By Lachlan Ellis There are 15 local children and teenagers who have been awarded by Rotary, receiving a certificate and $100 cash for their good deeds. One of those recipients was 12-year-old Lachlan Bellette from Greendale, a member of the 1st Ballan Scouts who has supported a wide range of causes, both financially and through volunteer work. From setting up hay bale displays for the Ballan Autumn Festival, to raising funds for Ballaratbased K.I.D.S Foundation and volunteering at the Blackwood Outdoor Specialist School, Lachlan hasn’t been afraid to roll up his sleeves and help worthy causes. Lachlan’s father Tony said he was incredibly proud of Lachlan’s efforts, and that Lachlan had always been the kind of person to look out for others. “He was very surprised to receive the award, and was very happy when he got home. Unfortunately, I had to watch it online, so I didn’t see his physical reaction at the time, but when he got home he was excited…he said ‘Dad, Dad, look at this!’” Mr Bellette told the Moorabool News. “I’m so proud of both our boys, the commitment they show to the community, that’s humbling. He’s always been a generous kid…I think it was probably when he was in Prep, we started talking to both our boys about when it comes to Christmas time, it’s not just about receiving presents, it’s about supporting others too. Mr Bellette praised the Rotary Club of Bacchus Marsh not just for the Community Involvement Award initiative, but its contributions to local youth as a whole. “It’s a great contribution by the Rotary Club, into the local primary schools. It’s fantastic, it gives kids different opportunities…this has
actually helped Lachie set himself up for Year 7, purchasing some equipment that he needs,” he said. Since 2015, Lachlan Bellette has donated $990 of his pocket money to purchase toys for disadvantaged families and children, so they can have a merry Christmas too. Also using his own pocket money, Lachlan has purchased a $60 ‘World Festival of Magic’ Ticket for the past 3 years, to enable a child with special needs to experience the World Festival of Magic Show annually organised by the Lions Club of Ballarat. Last year he donated $25 of his pocket money to purchase a virtual stadium seat at the Tokyo Paralympics, and encouraged his family to do the same. This money went towards supporting the Australian Paralympic team, and the next generation of para-athletes. Time to talk football Sport is back, and now is the time to get kids thinking about a local team to join. Ballan Football Club will face a challenging year with the clubrooms at the recreation reserve due to be demolished this week, making way for a brand-new staged upgrade. However, it is short term pain for long term gain. President of the club David O’Hanlon said it’s been tough times, and harder to get kids off couches and out playing footy with their mates. “The last couple of years we have not had an Under 18s team and now we are looking to boost numbers for our junior football sides, under 15 and 18s,” he said. “With COVID around you don’t see any kids in the streets, no kids riding bikes and trying to get kids back playing footy, is a hard feat.” O’Hanlon said the club has been contacting
parents and past members to get them back interacting, “but it’s proving difficult to say the least.” “Footy is a good outlet for the kids of that age group.We have put in place many programs to help the young guys and to provide a platform for them to progress into senior football and beyond,” Mr O’Hanlon said. “Over the last couple of years many parents have taken their kids elsewhere and it has affected the club in a big way, it would be great to see some of those families return, especially as we have a multi-million-dollar government and Council funded facility being built.” Interested in being a part of the Ballan FNC junior football teams? Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics Little Athletics this week was conducted in perfect conditions at Masons Lane Reserve on Saturday morning. A fantastic turn out this week, with attendance numbers at a high. An amazing 334 Personal Best results were recorded. Mya Berryman, Noah McKay, Ethan Sayers, Deegan Doyle, Felix Cukavac and Caitlyn Booth all recorded 5 PBs for the meet, earning them PB Stars of the Week. Emma Smith recorded two new Centre records on the track. The first was set in the 200m when Emma ran a blistering 28.62 seconds in the Under 16 event. Emma then backed up later in the morning to break the 400m record in a new time of 1:06.54 mins. Next week’s Centre meet will be a Twilight Meet on Friday evening commencing at 5pm, due to the Western Metro Region Carnival being held on the weekend at John Landy Athletics Field, South Geelong. Ballan Brumbies Basketball After the summer break, Ballan Brumbies returned to the hardwood last week. The Under 16 Boys Red team were without their regular coach Riley Dart due to illness, though the boys gave fill in coach Jarrod Prosser a stirring performance, dominating from the outset on their way to a convincing win over Phoenix Breakers. Ballan fielded a physically bigger and stronger side than Phoenix and looked to dominate the boards, whilst doing their best to mitigate Phoenix’s speed advantage. Encouragingly, Ballan’s first two possessions saw offensive rebounds to Johl Porter and Albie Eskdale, the former scoring the games opening basket. Brumbies owned the defensive boards, as well. Their superior size forcing Phoenix into tough shots and the resulting rebounds seeing Porter, Finn Solterbeck and debutant James Pace get out into the open court. When forced into half court situations, Ballan moved the ball well on offense - Ciaran Boland in particular slicing up the Phoenix defense with some incisive passes - opening up driving lanes for Solterbeck and jump shooting opportunities for Owen Woodward. Defensively, Boland and Solterbeck successfully stifled Phoenix’s prime movers in Barry Lockett and Paul Tan Sim, to the point where Ballan held Phoenix scoreless for the opening 18 minutes of the contest. A dominant performance to open the year from the boys, who saw Porter score a career high 20 points, Pace contributing 13, as the Brumbies ran out comfortable 46-10 winners. King Of Swing ensconced himself in racing royalty with a dominant performance in the Del-Re National A. G. Hunter Cup, becoming the first horse to win two Miracle Miles and two Hunter Cups. Held at Tabcorp Park Melton last Saturday night, Belinda McCarthy and Luke McCarthy’s brilliant entire was an unstoppable force in the $500,000 Grand Circuit classic, leading from gate one and blowing his rivals away in a stunning 25.9sec final quarter. It’s a victory that elevated him into rare air, increasing his career winnings to $2.78 million to leapfrog Christen Me into seventh on the all-time richest Australasian-bred pacers. “I’ve been so lucky throughout my career to drive a lot of great horses,” Luke McCarthy said. “This is one of my favourite horses of all time – he’s big, he’s strong, he’s good gaited. He’s just done such an amazing job. “It’s a massive thrill. I love driving at Melton, it’s one of my favourite tracks and to be able to win Victoria Cups and Hunter Cups, it’s a massive thrill.” King Of Swing was in a class of his own tonight, improving his extraordinary front-running record by having a vicelike grip on the race from the outset. McCarthy felt no pressure early, with stablemate Spirit Of St Louis able to drift forward into the running line and then hand over the breeze to Lochinvar Art amid a modest 85.3sec lead time. Neither McCarthy or Lochinvar Art’s reinsman, David Moran, were in any rush to quicken with major threats on their back, and with no three-wide line emerging until late they were able to pace even quarters until the last-gasp sprint to the line.

Photo Stuart McCormick “I was really worried about Amazing Dream on my back and obviously I tried to take it as easily as I possibly could and with Arty only being thirdup we knew he probably wasn’t ready to go to war with (King Of Swing),” McCarthy said. He would wait until straightening for the last time before releasing the King and the champ did the rest, careering away in a 25.9sec last quarter with only Spirit Of St Louis able to keep pace. The latter ran into second to continue his brilliant summer, while Amazing Dream claimed third ahead of fastfinishing Mach Dan. “What a great horse, such a beautiful athlete,” McCarthy said. “When I asked him to go at the top of the straight he just put three lengths on them.” A thrilled trainer Belinda McCarthy said another Grand Circuit triumph for
the Breckon Farms-bred entire, who’s by Rocknroll Hanover, was just reward as they advanced towards a stud career. “It’s amazing, knowing that he’s retiring at the end of the year and going to stud, you just want things to happen and he deserved it tonight,” she said. “He’s just one of the most beautiful horses I’ve been associated with, I’m very proud of him.” With the victory, King Of Swing became just the sixth horse to win two Hunter Cups, joining Pure Steel (three), Sheffield Globe, Minuteman, Monara and Blossom Lady. Of those, only Pure Steel also won a Miracle Mile - in 1978. And, as stated, only six horses now head King Of Swing on the Australasian-bred pacing stakewinners list, those being Blacks A Fake, Im The Mightyquinn, Lazarus, Smoken Up, Monkey King and Lennytheshark.
Fourth time triumph Michael Howard (HRV) Andy and Kate Gath combined for a stunning fourth What The Hill Great Southern Star triumph, with Majestuoso leading all-the-way in the final to cap a drama-filled Friday night at Tabcorp Park Melton. The Gaths' hold on the richest Australian trotting trophy tightened with Majestuoso adding to Tornado Valley’s two back-to-back wins, making it three in succession for owner Norm Jenkin, while the trainer-driver combo also scored in 2017 with Glenferrie Typhoon. “It’s such a great race and to be able to win it four times is such a great thrill," Andy Gath said. "To be able to win it for Norm, too, he’s been such a great supporter of mine for such a long time. It’s a great feeling.” And it was hard earned, with the Great Southern Star’s one-night heats-intofinal format creating plenty of drama along the way. Kate Gath had some nervous moments when Majestuoso was buried three back on the pegs in her heat, but she was able to find enough clear air late to run into fourth. While only the first three home were guarateed to advance, fortunately for Gath the second heat was by far the quickest. Seven of the 10 qualifiers advanced from it into the final, with only Rules Dont Apply, Tornado Valley and Wobelee emerging from the first heat. The next hurdle was the live barrier draw, where horses were randomly

Wobelee’s owner Colin Murphy was fortunate to draw first and happily claimed gate one, with Majestuoso claiming four while his major rival, Im Ready Jet, was stranded in gate 10 after being out of the draw due to galloping in her heat. It would prove decisive in the final, with Majestuoso crossing quickly to the lead and Wobelee taking his back, and they would prove the dominant runners with Temporale (breeze) and Tornado Valley (one-one) unable to threaten in the running line. Come the final 200 metres, Majestuoso and Wobelee cleared out, with the former holding on to win by a head.
Im Ready Jet was stunning in running into third from four back in the running line to pip Powderkeg for the placing. Anton Golino’s mare got home in a 55.98-second last half, almost a second quicker than the winner despite covering an extra 13 metres. However, the biggest smiles were, of course, reserved for the winner. “You always need a bit of luck somewhere and finding the front after drawing four made all the difference,” Kate Gath told TrotsVision. “It was a thrill to get another one. “He’s definitely (a horse) who has taken a little while. Patience and persistence, it can pay off and it’s turned him into the horse that he is. All credit to the team at home.”

Lion’s emphatic response Darley Cricket Club – By Todd Whelan Darley has passed its first acid test without star batting allrounder Danza Hyatt with a morale boosting 112 run win over Buninyong at the weekend. Classy opener Dilon Chandima (112) guided the Lions to 6/192 in trying conditions before the bowlers skittled the visitors for just 80. The satisfaction and relief shown by Chandima as he notched up his second century of the season was palpable. The little master hurried through for a quick single before an elated ‘fist pump’ gave every indication of how much this innings meant to an otherwise unflappable talent, renowned for going about his business. The Lions were in trouble early after losing Brodie Gellie (0) and Brodie Ward (3) cheaply before an in-form Hasi Wickramasinghe (44) joined Chandima for a match-winning 114 run partnership. At one stage the Lions were eyeing off a total in the 220 range but were restricted to 192 on the back of some tight bowling in the latter overs. Quick wickets for the Lions in their response with the ball would go a long way putting the asking target beyond reach - and again, coach Brian Wheelahan wasn’t to be let down. When ‘evergreen’ seamer Benny Longhurst struck with the score on eight, the Lions never looked back. The visitors struggled to 24 before the rot set in. The Lions took 4/0 to have the (then) sixth placed Buninyong reeling at 5/24. Longhurst (3/27) and Mitch Ward (2/4 off six overs) did all the damage before Chandima (2/13), newcomer Jake Oorloff (2/7 off five overs) and Rahmatullah Khwaja (1/15) chimed in with confidence building returns of their own to finish off an elongated tail. Wheelahan was proud of his boys first up following the departure of Hyatt. “While I thought we left 30 (runs) out there, are philosophy is we make our totals enough,” he said. “Dil’s knock was all class and Hasi continues his solid form. “The chemistry those two Sri Lankan boys share came to fruition with that valuable 100 plus partnership.” According to Wheelahan, the bowling group continue to impress and reap rewards off their own selfless nature. “The bowlers were super again, they don’t care who takes the wickets,” he said. “Benny keeps taking the big scalps and Mitch Ward bowled with some serious heat dismissing former BCA Medallist Liam Rigby.”
Wheelahan said the most pleasing aspect of the bowling performance was their ability to bowl in partnerships and the response from the entire group when youngster Jake Oorloff took his two wickets. “The vibe was electric when the boys got around Jake to celebrate,” he said. “Morale is high and we want to continue our momentum and winning form.” The reigning dual Premiership coach also made special mention of the performance of Andy Pickett behind the stumps. “Andy was clean as a whistle for us on a difficult deck and was rewarded with four dismissals,” Wheelahan said. “He has worked his backside off on his wicket-keeping skills and really complements our bowling group.” The Lions are on the road this Saturday for a tough assignment against fourth placed East Ballarat.
