Unexpected benefits of COVID

As the Omicron COVID variant spreads and daily case numbers are broken regularly, it’s no surprise that many Australians are alarmed right now – but one Moorabool Shire Councillor is looking on the bright side. East Ward Councillor Rod Ward and his family tested positive to COVID-19 earlier this month, and despite being hospitalised for one night, he said there were unexpected benefits to isolation once his worst symptoms had passed. “I came home from the beach on New Year’s Eve and had to go back to work on Tuesday the 4th…I had a bit of a cough on the Friday and Saturday night, so I had my suspicions. I got my hands on a Rapid Antigen Test on the Monday, that came back positive,” Cr Ward told the Moorabool News. “We’re a very active family, we’re involved in many clubs and many groups…it’s not often we actually get to spend a week at home together. That was an unexpected silver lining, we played a whole lot of board games, a lot of cooking, a lot of swimming in the backyard pool…once we started feeling better there was some backyard cricket. “It was great to spend that time together, I think we’ve all enjoyed it. Life goes at a hectic pace these days, so to have a ‘holiday at home’…while the circumstances weren’t great, it was a nice bonus.” Cr Ward said that it was likely everyone would get COVID at some point, but measures such as social distancing and getting vaccinated were vital in minimising the risks. “Obviously social distancing, and isolation if you have COVID, are crucial…but for asthmatics like me, and people with other underlying conditions – just be very careful and seek medical attention if needed,” he said. “The doctor did say to me, in his view, it’s inevitable we’re all going to get it…I was due for the booster on January 15, so my vaccine may have been wearing off. That just underlines the importance of having a booster shot, potentially if I had caught COVID after getting my booster, my symptoms may have been milder,” he said.
