Crash claims young life

By Lachlan Ellis

A man in his 20s has died in a Balliang car accident, while the driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries. Emergency services were called to the scene early on the morning of Monday 29 November, with paramedics arriving at approximately 5:55 am and assessing two people on scene. It is understood a utility collided with a car on Reddens Road, at the intersection of Bacchus Marsh – Balliang Road. A 44-year-old Balliang man, the driver of the utility, was treated for minor injuries and taken to Geelong University Hospital in a stable condition, while the 28-year-old man from Dales Creek died at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. Any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au Lives lost on road 2021 - 219

Mowing down costs

By Lachlan Ellis Once overgrown with weeds, bracken and long grass, the final resting place for many has a new lease of life. Volunteers banded together with whipper snippers, gloves, and a fair bit of elbow grease to make the Gordon New Cemetery tidier, but important machinery was missing, lawn mowers. The cemetery committee applied for a community investment grant with the local bank and was thrilled with the announcement they received the funding to purchase two new mowers, equipment that now makes the volunteers work easier. Gordon local Neil Eastwood is a volunteer at the Cemetery and said the funding from the Ballan & District Community Bank Branch, allowed the committee to buy the equipment. “The investment made my day,” he said.

sort of equipment you can bowl it over fairly quickly, and it still looks fairly professional.” Mr Eastwood said it would have been impossible for community groups to raise the amount of money the Community Bank has given them. “I’m involved in a few organisations in town, and they’ve all been recipients of funds from the local bank. They’re some big numbers … to try and raise that money outside of the Bank’s support would be a big job, and take forever to get enough money to buy expensive equipment like the mowers,” he said. “We couldn’t be grateful enough for the support they give us, and other organisations in town, and other towns right along their patch. It’s over a million dollars since the inception…that’s phenomenal, where would these little country towns raise a million dollars in the matter of a few years?”

“We needed some new equipment, so we applied to the Bank…we’ve been lucky enough to secure two new mowers,” he said.

And a famous movie quote by Clint Eastwood (no relation) is “Go ahead, make my day”, and the bank has.

“It makes a huge difference in keeping this fairly large area under control, and making it pleasant for people to visit relatives who are buried here. It’s a big job, but with this

Since the Ballan & District Community Bank Branch opened ten years ago, in November 2011, it has reinvested $1.09 million back into the local community.
