After more than 40 years, Ballan will have a new rainfall reader in 2022, after a volunteer finally came forward. Merilyn Meadows has been Ballan’s official rainfall reader since 1979, providing daily readings to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) for use in its weather reports.

But not long after a Moorabool News article (19 Oct 2021) where Ms Meadows asked for someone to take up the role, a successor put their hand up. Luke Mullane will be Ballan’s new rainfall reader and told the Moorabool News that rainfall reading was something he’d done regularly for years. “The BOM asked me to do it, they asked if I’d be interested. Someone obviously dobbed me in,” Mr Mullane joked.

“I’ve been interested in weather since I was a little kid. I’ve been taking my own records here probably for the last 15 years, every day. I just enjoy doing it.” Officials from the Bureau visited Mr Mullane’s property and have the rain gauge all set up and ready to go, but he won’t be the official rainfall reader for Ballan until 1 January 2022, allowing Ms Meadows to finish her 43rd and final year, as Ballan’s rainfall reader.

Crash claims young life

A man in his 20s has died in a Balliang car accident, while the driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries. Emergency services were called to the scene early on the morning of Monday 29 November, with paramedics arriving at approximately 5:55 am and assessing two people on scene. It is understood a utility collided with a car on Reddens Road, at the intersection of Bacchus Marsh – Balliang Road. A 44-year-old Balliang man, the driver of the utility, was treated for minor injuries and taken to Geelong University Hospital in a stable condition, while the 28-year-old man from Dales Creek died at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. Mowing down costs

By Lachlan Ellis Once overgrown with weeds, bracken and long grass, the final resting place for many has a new lease of life. Volunteers banded together with whipper snippers, gloves, and a fair bit of elbow grease to make the Gordon New Cemetery tidier, but important machinery was missing, lawn mowers. The cemetery committee applied for a community investment grant with the local bank and was thrilled with the announcement they received the funding to purchase two new mowers, equipment that now makes the volunteers work easier. Gordon local Neil Eastwood is a volunteer at the Cemetery and said the funding from the Ballan & District Community Bank Branch, allowed the committee to buy the equipment. “The investment made my day,” he said.

It’s over a million dollars since the inception…that’s phenomenal, where would these little country towns raise a million dollars in the matter of a few years?”

‘Cowabunga’ stops traffic By Lachlan Ellis It was ‘udder’ chaos on the Western Freeway last week, as a group of cows blocked the road two days in a row. Both incidents may have been ‘amoosing’ to some, but less so to those stuck in the traffic, with social media flooded with messages warning Marshians not to use the Western Freeway. Bacchus Marsh Police don’t yet know how the cows managed to get out of the truck they were in, but are investigating to find out if negligence or faulty equipment were to Cows on the freeway last week. Photo – Sue Stewart blame. “A number of cows seemingly mysteriously appeared on the freeway between Condons Lane and nearly down as far as where the Avenue of Honour meets the freeway,” a member from the police station told the Moorabool News. “We don’t know how they got out of the truck, but the driver has been identified, he’s made himself known. The cows were basically minded overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, they got a few of the cows back on the truck, but two of them weren’t very happy to go back in. “One of them got back onto the freeway on Thursday, but that was taken care of…hopefully that’s the end of it.” VICSES Bacchus Marsh volunteers were also called to the scene, assisting police with traffic management near the intersection of the Western Freeway with Gisborne Road. Delays were between 40 mins to three hours. The police member could not confirm whether any of the Hereford type cows were injured.

A decision from the Commonwealth Government, following the Royal Commission into Aged Care, has “forced Council’s hand” on potentially ceasing aged and disability services. In a closed session of the 1 December Ordinary Meeting, Council made an in-principle decision to transition out of delivering services currently funded by the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP), Home and Community Care Program for Younger People (HACC-PYP), and Regional Assessment Services (RAS). Under the change, the Commonwealth Government will be responsible for choosing a new provider of aged care and disability services. However, Council has affirmed that it will continue to advocate for the needs of vulnerable Moorabool residents, and continue investing in age-friendly programs such as the Age Well Live Well Strategy. Council CEO Derek Madden said Council would work hard to help find the best successor, that provided the closest level of service to what clients were used to. “There will be a change in how the Commonwealth will fund Council, which will mean Council is not able to fund the full suite of services. However, Council will enter the EOI (Expression of Interest) process, we’ll take a proactive role,” Mr Madden said. “This change is happening in many Councils, if not the majority. Hepburn Shire made a similar decision in November.” Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said the decision “was not taken lightly”, but the Commonwealth Government’s changes made it an unfortunate necessity. “Council has had a number of briefings from consultants and come to an understanding on why

this needs to be done. The changes from the Royal Commission have forced our hand, but we’ll work actively in the transition process to get the best outcome for our community,” he said. “We want to assure our clients that service continuity is a priority, and we will not be leaving clients without the services they require during any transition phase that may arise in the future. Council has deliberated on this for a considerable amount of time and weighed up options.” Manager of Active Ageing and Diversity, Belinda Stewart, said Victoria is the only state in Australia with a model for aged care and disability services where councils are involved. Following the Royal Commission’s recommendations, Ms Stewart said the Commonwealth was looking for “national uniformity” in aged care and disability services. “In Victoria we have around 200 providers receiving CHSP funding – other states might only have 10 to 15. Quality of care was a big factor that came out of the Royal Commission…we’ve had significant waiting lists during the pandemic, podiatry is up to 18 months in some places,” she said. “Unfortunately, we can’t prop up the Commonwealth’s model financially. To some of our clients, this may come as a surprise. But we want to make sure they are supported as they need to be and as they have been,” she said. Council will receive a further report in March 2022, and may choose to confirm the in-principle decision then. A non-confidential version of this report will be included in that meeting’s minutes, to ensure transparency in the decision-making process. Overall, 38 aged care employees (23 full time equivalent) will be affected by the change.

WORKING WITH ARBORISTS AND WILDLIFE ECOLOGISTS RESIDENTIAL CLEAN-UP PROGRAM REACHES HALF WAY MARK We officially hit the half way mark for our Residential Storm and Flood Clean-up program in late-November, with make-safe and clean-up works completed on 573 properties out of 1,137. That’s just over 50% completed! It’s a huge effort, requiring 650 specialist contractors to deliver almost 30,000 hours of works on private properties across 41 local government areas. The June storm and flood event had a massive impact on communities and residents, the effects are still being felt. Recovery for this event is a marathon, not a sprint. To hit the half-way mark is a testament to the dedication of our clean-up team and partners.

The Residential Storm and Flood Clean-up program is gaining momentum as we approach the end of the year, with work crews ramping up efforts to complete works on remaining registered properties. Recently, our social media pages have featured three videos which showcase what arborists and wildlife ecologists get up to while working for the Clean-up program. This behind-the-scenes footage gives an insight to the complexity and risks involved when working with hazardous trees. The team stopped in Blackwood, Dales Creek, Blakeville, Korweinguboora, Bolwarrah, Barkstead and Gordon, sharing a meal and speaking directly to community members about their recovery following the 2021 June storm and the more recent October extreme weather. Council would like to acknowledge the continued resilience of all Moorabool residents during the ongoing clean-up and recovery from these two major weather events that hit the Shire. Family connection continues Vaccine mandate questioned

By Lachlan Ellis Another member of the Mullane family has been welcomed at a Ballan school, but not as a student. Peter Mullane has been a teacher for over 30-years and was recently appointed Performing Arts Teacher at St Brigid’s Primary School for 2022. Performing Arts has been part of home room teachers’ responsibilities until now, but Mr Mullane is excited to be the first dedicated Performing Arts Teacher, at the school that he himself attended. “The best thing about Performing Arts is that every child gets the chance to shine. Every child becomes a star. I’m looking forward to embracing the opportunity of coming back to where I learnt as a kid, coming back to a small rural community,” he told the Moorabool News. “I’ve always taught in bigger schools, from Melton to Bacchus Marsh and Ballarat, and now I’m starting to wind down. As Performing Arts Teacher I’ll be working on certain elements in Prep, varying as it goes up to Grade 6,” he said. The Mullane family have a strong connection with St Brigid’s, with Mr Mullane far from the first of his family to attend. His father Tom, started in 1930 at just six years old. Today, his great nephew Tom and great niece Ruby are currently St Brigid’s students also. Mr Mullane said he was proud of his

Photo – Lachlan Ellis connection to the school, which he called “a hub of Ballan”. “When St Brigid’s first started it was a one-teacher school, I’m not sure how many students there were, Pop used to always talk about it. All these generations later, it’s pretty amazing to think there are still Mullane’s connected with the school,” he said. “It’s great to come back to the school, I have fond memories of this place. When I came here, it was two rooms

called the big room and the little room, that’s all it was. You were in the little room in Prep, Grade 1 and 2, and the big room in Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6.” Over a period of around 90 years, it’s believed that there was only one year without a Mullane at St Brigid’s – 1997. The ‘A Short History’ book published by St Brigid’s shows school photos of Mullane’s attending the school as far back as 1920.

Council has been asked why they are enforcing a vaccine mandate at the Bacchus Marsh Leisure Centre, in a written submission at the December meeting. Johanna Blaine’s submission was read out during Public Question Time, at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on Wednesday 1 December. “Why is the Council enforcing mandatory vaccinations for 16-year-olds and over to play community sport, when it is not a mandated direction from the Victorian Government? This is not mandated for attendance at school, yet children cannot play sport,” Ms Blaine wrote. General Manager of Community Strengthening, Sally Jones, responded to Ms Blaine’s submission on behalf of Council. “Bacchus Marsh Leisure Centre is located on the grounds of the Bacchus Marsh Secondary College, as a shared use arrangement between Council and the College,” Ms Jones said. “The current Department of Health directions for community sport state: ‘For community sport, the vaccination requirements do not apply in relation to any indoor space or outdoor space in a physical recreation premises, if that space is being operated only for the purpose of conducting a community sport activity’.” But because the Leisure Centre is not used solely for community sport activity, Ms Jones explained, a vaccine mandate was required. “Further advice related to schools also states, ‘compliance with current Department of Health advice is required, regardless of any pre-existing or previous arrangements agreed with a community sporting club or group’,” she said. “As the Leisure Centre is a shared facility with the school, Council require all users of the facility for the purposes of community sport to be vaccinated to ensure COVID-safe use for community and school members.”

Hospital roof to be replaced

A local hospital will have part of their roof replaced after the State Government announced $1.2 million to be invested. The Bacchus Marsh hospital will receive a total of $1,264,000 to replace the roof between the Maternity Ward and the Theatre, to prevent water leakage and support mechanical system installation. Member for Melton, Steve McGhie, said they are delivering better health outcomes for the community with modern services and facilities, while creating local jobs. “Everyone deserves access to quality health care facilities and services close to home, that’s why we’re investing in the Bacchus

Marsh Hospital,” he said. The funding is part of $120 million under Round 5 of the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund (RHIF), to be shared by nearly 80 rural and regional hospitals, community health services, and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations. The RHIF program has now invested $490 million in over 470 regional healthcare projects across the state, and created hundreds of jobs. I have thought of ideas, these encompass, getting fully vaccinated which I have already done. Following the current Covid rules. Everyone needs to learn that each person is going through their own difficulties and just to be kind and understanding to one another. Furthermore, the most important one of all, make sure to stock up on toilet paper! Hopefully in the future the world will be back to normal once again. All we need to do is smile.”

Landowners in western Victoria are being encouraged by Agriculture Victoria to keep their eyes peeled for orange hawkweed and to report any suspect plants. Orange hawkweed is a State Prohibited Weed, which is the highest category of declared noxious weed in Victoria. Native to Europe, these weeds have the potential to cause significant impact to native ecosystems through restricting the growth of neighbouring plants by releasing chemicals into the soil, replacing native plants with a dense mat of rosettes. Agriculture Victoria Leading Biosecurity Officer Fiona Sharman said orange hawkweed continues to be monitored and treated by Agriculture Victoria at sites at Blackwood, Daylesford, Mount Macedon and Trentham. “We’ve seen orange hawkweed continue to germinate over recent seasons which can damage our native environment,” she said. “The sooner we can take action against infestations, the better our chances are to eradicate it.” Ms Sharman said now is the best time of year to inspect your property for orange hawkweed, as the weed flowers in summer and is easier to spot. “Orange hawkweed can be identified by its bright orange daisy like flowers with square ended petals, the flowers are up to 15mm across and arranged in clusters on the stem. The stems and leaves have long wiry hairs.” Hawkweeds can spread quickly by seeds that are carried in the wind or from stolons (above ground runners) and root fragments.

Keep calm around snakes It can be easy to become scared or alarmed by the appearance of a snake, but the official advice is to stay calm. As we enter summer and snakes are becoming a more common sight, DELWP has put out a reminder of what to do if you encounter one. Snakes left brumation (hibernation for cold-blooded animals) in spring, and with recent rains helping grass grow, it’s important to know what to do if you see a snake this summer. DELWP says you should calmly leave the area with any pets and children, call 136 186 for advice (or a local snake catcher if a snake is in the home), clean your yard and keep your grass cut low, and keep your first aid kit stocked with compression bandages. It’s vital that you leave snakes alone and call Triple Zero (000) immediately if bitten. Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975, and it is illegal to harm, kill or capture them without authorisation.

Referring to the new CFA training facility at Ballan (M/ News 30 Nov), it might be a good plan to discuss the inclusion of on-site furnace treatment of PFAS chemicals, used in firefighting foam, which can be destroyed at 600 deg centigrade (see work by mineralogist Assoc. Professor Will Gates of Deakin University). The resulting fine aggregate can be used for making concrete, of which there is a worldwide shortage. PFAS chemicals, unless destroyed, accumulate in all creatures and have been banned in many countries. Creeks, rivers and oceans contain PFAS even to the extent of poisoning seals at Phillip Island (see online studies by the Veterinary Department of Sydney University). Furnace treatment is not new and should be used to treat toxic soil from the Westgate Tunnel as well as contaminated items from other industries.

Jan Conroy rink drew 19, while the Brian Dowling ring went down by 3 shots Division 3 Ballan travelled to Sebastopol for a game that was going to be close all day. This proved to be the case and it was Ballan that came out on top by 11 shots. Ballan Brumbies Basketball

After a poor start to the new season the Brumbies U12 Boys white grade team were out to prove that they belonged at this level against fellow winless side, Widlcats. Things did not look good for Ballan when prior to the match the team lost three players to varying ailments, leaving the team with just the four players. However, the boys started well, playing the Wildcats to a draw in the early stages of the match, before an unanswered run of four baskets from Harry Garner and Lachlan Prosser saw Ballan open up an eight-point lead. Unfortunately, Prosser and Brody Grech each picked up a pair of quick fouls and as a result had to play conservatively on defence. At a Ballan time out to adjust their team defense, coach Riley Dart pushed his chargers to maintain their ascendancy which they did with a 12-2 run pushing the lead out to an even 20 points. The Brumbies quartet were passing their way through the Wildcats defense with ease, despite playing a man down. Continued tough play inside from Prosser and sharp shooting from Garner saw Ballan lead by a score of 40-12 at the half. Ballan didn’t let up in the second period with Eli Rogers finding his range with three quick baskets. Ballan’s defense - Garner and Rogers a menace on the ball, Prosser and Grech controlling the boards - saw them get out on the break converting layup after layup, Grech and Garner the primary beneficiaries. As expected, the boys tired as the game wore on as Wildcats found their way to the basket more often. However, the Brumbies earlier work saw them run out comfortable 60-26 winners in a brilliant performance. Led by Garner’s 22 points, all four Brumbies scored in double figures, thanks to some excellent defense, incisive passing, and accurate finishing. With two players due to return next week, this win could set the boys up for a successful season. Bowling - Josh Singh 2/3, Angus Britt 1/8, James Burton 1/8 After losing the toss and being sent into bat, openers Norman and Singh got Ballan off to a fantastic start with quick scoring and a consistent attitude to look for runs at every opportunity. The opening partnership of 83 included 11 fours and plenty of singles and twos. Norman eventually fell for 38 and Singh followed for 41 when the score was on 102. Ballan finished the innings on 114 after 25 overs, with plenty of batting to follow next week for the second half of the split innings. The Ballan bowlers kept the score tight with just 10 runs coming off the first six overs. Mt. Clear were struggling at 2/17 after 9 overs. At the end of play, Mt. Clear were 35 runs behind after 25 overs each of batting.

Facing the biggest run chase of the season, Co-Captains Sarah Burton and Clover McIlwaine opened the batting and put together a perfect opening partnership, with smart shot selection and hard running between the wickets. A couple of quick wickets were lost before Max Farrell and Charlotte Wallace steadied the innings. Beth Davenport then came to the crease and took control, pushing her batting partner Oscar Britt hard between the wickets to guide the team home in the last over for a well-deserved win.

Taking over as wicket keeper Mark Kennedy scored 28 for the Ballan 1st Heath Doherty made his first century for from Ned Conroy, Kiara Grigg XI. the Ballan U 17s finishing on 103 not out. did a great job for her first time.

Lions fail with the bat

Darley coach Brian Wheelahan has labelled his prides’ performance with the bat as ‘embarrassing’, after East Ballarat knocked over the reigning dual Premiers for just 107, and on their way to an upset four wicket win at the weekend. The Lions looked to be cruising at 0/28 after winning the toss, before a dramatic batting collapse saw the home side lose 8/35, including 5/8 through the middle stages. Promising all-rounder Mitch Ward (27*), added some respectability to the score late with wicketkeeper Andrew Pickett (21), adding 36 runs for the ninth wicket before the Lions were bowled out in just 37 overs. Only four of the potent Lions batting line-up made it past six (runs) - proving again, this game of cricket was never meant to be easy. The total score of 107 was their lowest since Round Two 2020/21 when ironically East Ballarat skittled the Lions for just 90 and their lowest recording at home since Round One 2018/19 when Mt Clear did the damage - then, all out for 69. “The ‘batting’ just wasn’t us - simple,” Wheelahan said. “We made a few poor choices with the bat but we’re a proud group, we addressed it and we move on to next week.” While the designated target looked vulnerable at best to defend, Wheelahan was full of praise of his bowlers and their efforts to pull off an unlikely victory. Spinner Hasi Wickramasinghe (4/17) near single handledly bowled the Lions into contention from his 10 overs, a return not missed by Wheelahan in the aftermath. “Hasi led the charge and really turned it on back at Darley Park,” Wheelahan said. “In fact, the entire bowling group bowled their hearts but 107 was always going to be hard to defend.” Wheelahan said while they were embarrassed with the performance with the bat, he was confident his boys would bounce back quickly. “We’ll be ready to go for next week’s challenge,” he said. “We are still in a really good place to complete phase one of our season before Christmas and have ourselves in an ideal position to relaunch into the New Year.” Darley are at home this Saturday for a meeting with ninth

Tornado storms into millionaire status By Michael Howard (HRV) Tornado Valley has crashed through the million-dollar mark in brilliant style that has become the trotter’s trademark, with a flawless all-the-way performance last Saturday night. The crushing win in the Aldebaran Park R C Freestone Trotters Free For All, the 39th of his 108-start career, saw the nine-year-old become the ninth Australasian trotter to amass seven figures in stake winnings, a relief and a thrill for trainer Andy Gath and driver Kate Gath. It was also the headliner on a terrific night’s racing at Tabcorp Park, in which two late dashes claimed the Youthful Stakes and bold performances won heats of the Gordon Rothacker Memorial Championship.

The night belonged to Tornado Valley and connections shared a mix of relief with the result and optimism for what might still be to come. “It was super special,” Kate Gath told TrotsVision. “To get it done was everything, really over the moon.” While Andy Gath said the thrill wasn’t so much about passing the million-dollar mark as “bringing him back and showing that he’s still got plenty to offer”. “It was a dominant performance, it wasn’t unexpected, but you still have to come and do it,” he said. “It’s a bit of a relief, but it’s great that he’s still got life in his legs.” Tornado Valley was in a class of his own in the Group 3 over the middle distance, tearing from the gate in the style that has helped him build his stunning record.

There was little pressure throughout, and Kate Gath stretched the field with a 28.8-second third quarter before coming home in 28.3 to win by 5.6 metres from Aldebaran Tess, with Sundons Courage and Powderkeg completing the first four. “Once I asked him, he was just off and gone and he got to the line really well,” Kate Gath said. And the dominance assures there will be more to come, with the camp hopeful he’ll be able to defend his Great Southern Star crown on February 4. “He loves being in work, he loves racing, and he loves stable life,” Andy Gath said. “We’ll keep going until we think he’s not going to be at his best. Tonight, he proved he’s still got plenty left.”
