Eka records nine wicket haul
Darley Cricket Club - By Todd Whelan
Lion’s spearhead Madushanka Ekanayaka’s stunning nine wicket haul has led defending dual Premiers Darley to an emphatic first round win on the road against Brown Hill. The former Sri Lankan Under 19 representative finished with career best figures of 9/15 from his 7.1 overs to skittle the homeside for just 28. Amazingly, Eka’s returns with the ball since joining the Lions remain the competition’s benchmark with 79 wickets at a tick under 12 runs per wicket (11.92). It’s scary to contemplate just how many more scalps the right arm speedster would have at Darley when you consider just four of his 39 games have been played over the longer form - two day cricket, the only format to be free of (overs bowled) restrictions on any player. Lions coach Brian Wheelahan could not have been happier. “That was as close to a clinical performance as you’ll see,” he said. “Full credit to the boys all-round, the wicket was certainly good enough to score on.” Wheelahan said it while it was phenomenal to witness Eka’s rare-air, nine wicket spell, it was no surprise to see him swoop on a huge bag. “Eka’s been knocking on the door for a while for a result like this,” he said. “Just rewards for a big preseason, I couldn’t be prouder. “In fact, the whole team played their role,” he said. According to Wheelahan, the Lions caught well, bowled well, and batted selflessly to chase down the runs before any rain could spoil a deserved victory.
Darley debutants Lane Havelburg (wicketkeeper) and Dilan Chandima (opening bat) had a day to remember not only for the convincing nature of an affair that lasted just 17.5 overs in its entirety. Havelburg claimed his first catch and remained ‘bye free’ while Chandima gave the Lions faithful a glimpse of what’s to come in 2021/22 with a stylish 13 not out from eight balls that included three fours. The Lions took just 3.4 overs to reel in the target. Be sure to descend on Darley Park this Saturday for the Grand Final replay when the Lions host Golden Point who will be keen to atone for their season opening loss to Wendouree. Play starts at noon.
