26th Annual TEA Thea Awards Program - 2020

Perhaps you were there in November 2019 when TEA made the annual live announcement naming the 26th Annual TEA Thea Awards recipients. Under normal circumstances, public recognition of the recipients would have culminated in April 2020 by TEA’s big weekend of live, in-person events: the twoday TEA Summit and Thea Case Studies, and the TEA Thea Awards Gala presented by Chimelong, at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the industry calendar, and regretfully TEA’s big weekend had to be canceled for 2020. However, although unable to gather in person we are still able to recognize, celebrate and document the 26th Annual TEA Thea Awards recipients. We have done this with a new digital series

of Thea Case Studies, which will become part of the video archives on TEA TV; by publishing the official program you are now reading, and sharing it digitally, worldwide; and with project descriptions and articles on the official blog and Thea Awards gallery at teaconnect.org

This program provides important historical documentation of top achievements within our industry. The program contains official descriptions and photos of the 26th annual Thea recipients, including the comprehensive credits lists that are a key part of how TEA serves its members and the entire industry through the Thea Awards.

Meanwhile, the cycle continues. We look forward to resuming the TEA event schedule in the near future, and we hope to see you again in person at our next conference and celebration.

Collaboration and trust

Not everyone realizes that a Thea Award honors the project itself. Symbolically, the trophy is given to the owner/producing organization at the Thea Awards Gala to honor the collective achievement. A Thea Award recognizes the people and companies that dedicated their energy to creating the project, and the teamwork culture of our industry that allows these celebrated projects to become the best of the best.

Innovation and the test of time

Whether a new ride system or ways to integrate a ride system, new ways of telling a story, inventive technologies or other pioneering achievements, breakthrough innovation is celebrated at the Theas because it expands the creative possibilities of our industry. And when innovation is successfully applied, it endures. This year’s Thea Classic Award, recognizing a project that has stood the test of time, honors Pageant of the Masters. It has been entertaining guests and supporting artists for nearly 90 years.

Education and celebration

Thea Awards Case Studies Day is another opportunity for our global community to come together, learn from the innovators, and reflect on our industry making the world a better place through education, experience and emotion.

TEA recognizes dedication and learning in other ways, such as the TEA Masters Program. The program honors individual masters of their craft and positions them to enrich our community with their knowledge through the TEA SATE conferences and

other educational events. An industry with Masters is a mature industry. Look for ways to connect with them!

The future

The TEA Thea Awards give the industry something to aspire to - a goal that may influence day-to-day project decisions to make things better. When project teams are creative, positive, respectful and trusting, there’s great potential for excellence and innovation. If I could wave a magic wand, I would wish for every project to foster these things. Personifying those traits is the 26th annual recipient of the Buzz Price Thea Award - Recognizing a Lifetime of Distinguished Achievements: Nancy Seruto of Walt Disney Imagineering. Well-deserved, Nancy!

A dedicated TEAm

Every year, the Thea Awards Nominating Committee - a dedicated team of experienced, industry experts - reviews hundreds of submittals from around the world. There is a rigor applied to the selection process with research, analysis, assessments and much debate. Without rigor, everything becomes average. Thank you all!

The TEA has so many energetic volunteers deserving of thanks. This year, we are specially honoring Wendy Heimann-Nunes of Nolan Heimann LLP with the TEA Peter Chernack Distinguished Service Award. She is an industry leader who has helped the TEA again and again.

History of the TEA Thea Awards

The establishment of the TEA Thea Awards as the preeminent award program recognizing excellence in Themed Entertainment projects was seminal to the recognition of Themed Entertainment as a professional industry. The Theas shine a bright light on the industry and its leaders, fabricators and creative geniuses who make Themed Entertainment magic.

TEA created the Thea Awards to bring recognition to achievement, talent and excellence within the themed entertainment industry.

The Thea Awards began in 1994 with a single Lifetime Achievement Award, and the first honoree was Harrison “Buzz” Price, a pioneer in entertainment feasibility. Monty Lunde, Bob Rogers, Pat Scanlon and Barry Howard were on the first Thea Awards organizational and judging committee.

The Thea Awards were named in reference to three words:

• “Thea” - the Greek goddess from whom all light emanates

• “Theater” - derived from the goddess Thea

• “TEA” - the acronym referring to our Association

The original Thea trophies were designed by Barry Howard and Jeremy Railton. The current Thea trophy debuted in 2001 and was designed by Zofia Kostryko.

The first year’s ceremony, held at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, was produced by Ron Miziker, and coordinated by Jana Love, with TEA founder Monty Lunde serving as master of ceremonies. The 1995 Thea Awards also took place at the Biltmore, again with a single honoree: the late Marty Sklar (an official Disney Legend).

After Buzz Price passed away in 2010, TEA renamed the Thea Lifetime Achievement Award in his honor. It is now called the Buzz Price Thea Award - Recognizing a Lifetime of Distinguished Achievements.

The third year (1996) saw the introduction of Awards for Outstanding Achievement (AOA). Ten AOAs were bestowed. The Thea Classic category was created in 1997. It can be given to one achievement per year that has stood the test of time. Also in 1997, the AOA category of Excellence on a Limited Budget was created, to celebrate outstanding achievements under $10 million.

For 2014-2015, new Wizarding World of Harry Potter attractions at Universal Studios prompted the TEA Thea Awards Committee to create the Paragon Award, which recognizes a project that sets a new bar of excellence.

Since 2017, numerous projects have been honored within the new Thea Award category, “Connected Immersion,” recognizing that tremendous advances in technology, social behavior and connectivity are reinventing our notion of storytelling and immersion.

As our industry has expanded globally, the Thea Awards have recognized this and the geographic coverage of the awards has grown accordingly. It should also be noted that the Thea Awards are not by any means confined to theme parks. Museums and museum exhibitions, heritage centers, casinos, multimedia spectaculars, brand experiences, theatrical productions and many other types of attractions and guest experiences fall into the realm of projects that can be eligible for Thea Awards.

The TEA Peter Chernack Distinguished Service Award is also presented at the TEA Thea Awards Gala. This award was created and is decided by the TEA Past Presidents Committee, and was renamed in honor of the late Peter Chernack, a TEA Past President who was instrumental in conceiving this award.

The culture of the Thea Awards is unique.

Here are some key characteristics:

• Honoree: the project itself – Thea AOA and Thea Classic awards honor the entire achievement. The trophy is awarded to the project owner.

• Official project credits – The project owner is obliged to furnish a comprehensive credits list for publication by TEA. In this way the Thea Awards have resulted in the first official project credits of the themed entertainment industry.

• Trophies for the team – Individuals and companies named on the official credits list of a Thea-honored project are entitled to obtain their own trophies from TEA.

• No set categories – The TEA is free to honor several achievements in the same category, create a new category, or to skip categories as the year’s achievements warrant.

• No secrets – Award recipients are openly announced in November, and the awards are formally presented the following spring at the Thea Awards Gala.

• Open nominations – Anyone can nominate a project for a Thea Award. It is not necessary to be a TEA member. You can nominate your own project.

The objective is simple: To find excellence and celebrate it. As we look to the future, the Thea Awards will continue to grow and evolve, while continuing to honor the original objective of bringing recognition to achievement, talent and professional excellence within our themed entertainment industry.

Each year, hundreds of submissions are received and considered by the TEA Thea Awards Committee for outstanding destination attractions, breakthrough technology, event spectaculars, cultural attractions or guest experiences, and individuals who have made their mark through a lifetime of distinguished achievements.

Submissions process

Submissions close in July; recipients are announced the following November, and awards formally presented the following spring at the TEA Thea Awards Gala presented by Chimelong.

Pageant of the Masters — Laguna Beach, CA, USA

Thea Classic Award

The Pageant inspires and exposes people to artwork that they may have otherwise never been aware of, through a technique called Tableaux Vivant or Living Pictures, a unique combination of elements blending live performance, storytelling and the theater arts for an educational and entertaining experience that has been enjoyed by some 140,000 guests. This illusionary stage show has taken place every summer since 1933, recreating classical and contemporary art works in faithful detail. Each season more than 500 volunteers donate their skills and talent to make paintings come to life on four stages surrounded by a canyon in a 90-minute program that includes a professional narrator and orchestra accompaniment.

Set in a beautiful canyon on four surrounding stages, the program consists of a variety of art pieces carefully

selected and based on that year’s theme, both Classical and Contemporary. The Masterpieces are presented with hand-painted, live humans, who pose motionless in a perfectly recreated background set, for 90 seconds at a time. A professional narrator tells informative and fascinating stories of each piece, while a full orchestra and singers accompany and accentuate each mood.

The lighting and stagecraft are exceptional. The hundreds of highly skilled volunteers join their talents to build sets, paint backgrounds, recreate sculptures, fabricate costumes, apply makeup, design lighting, and participate in the Tableaux. Their combined efforts uphold the highest level of production value, as they successfully recreate the numerous works of great masters of visual art.

Buzz Price Thea Award - Recognizing a Lifetime of Distinguished Achievements

As a creative executive for Walt Disney Imagineering, leading the design and development of highly immersive experiences is at the top of Nancy Seruto’s job description. It’s a natural fit, as storytelling and the arts have always been in her blood.

“Even as a young girl, all I wanted to do was be an artist,” Nancy said. “I loved to dance, to sing, to paint, to play piano. I loved stories, and I made up whole worlds in my head. My mom was a great storyteller, and taught me and my brother and sisters that reading was a gateway to imagination as well as encouraging us in creative play.”

Although she grew up in Southern California, she recalls only one childhood trip to Disneyland and instead drew most of her impressions of the park from The Wonderful World of Disney TV show. So, where did she get the theme park bug?

“I remember getting a Barbie doll and not being sure what to do with her,” Nancy said. “So I built her a kind of ‘Barbie world’ with materials I scavenged from around the neighborhood. She had her own split-level ranch house, a corral for her plastic horses, and a kidney-shaped pool painted blue. And that was the start of my love for imagined worlds.”

When it came time to go to college, Nancy tried to satisfy her father’s desire for a practical career by enrolling in a pre-med program at UC San Diego, but quickly found herself distracted.

“I discovered classes in music, filmmaking and theater, and I felt like I was home at last!” Nancy said. “However

when the arts courses started dominating my schedule, my dad said ‘enough’ and cut me off.”

To support herself, Nancy took gigs on lighting and sound crews for local theater, concerts and events - anything to stay connected to the world of live entertainment. A turning point came in her mid-20s when she found full-time theater work at the newly formed San Diego Repertory Theater.

“I was exposed to brilliant professional actors, designers and directors,” Nancy said. “I did everything there; I took it all in and I was actually getting paid to do what I had always dreamed of.”

While finishing school with a graduate degree in theater, she continued to design lighting for dance companies and

painted scenery on film sets. Eventually she landed at Lexington Scenery [now part of The Companies of Nassal] where she rose through the ranks into a senior leadership position.

“I learned a lot about running a business at Lexington, including estimating, negotiating and managing people,” Nancy said. “Every day I had to balance - artist, fabricator, manager, businessperson, designer and back again. We grew a lot while I was there, from 20 employees to about 250, and we took on bigger and more complicated projects. I’m proud to say that during my tenure, about a dozen of our projects were recognized for excellence with Thea Awards.”

Her experience at Lexington inspired her to partner with businessman Robert Koval to establish a consulting firm called Seruto & Company.

“I was driven to start my own business by the possibilities of defining my own destiny and for shaping a company around the things I was passionate about,” Nancy said.

Their portfolio of projects grew fairly rapidly, and included major touring exhibitions around African American history, women’s history, Native American history, science and space, and King Tut. After 10 years in business, a new opportunity came knocking when an industry colleague contacted her.

“Bob Weis - who is now the president of Walt Disney Imagineering - was leading the creative efforts on Shanghai Disney Resort and asked me to come on board,” Nancy said. “I loved the company Robert Koval and I had built and the people we worked with, but the opportunity to collaborate with Bob Weis on a project of this scale was irresistible. I weighed all the pluses and minuses and took the plunge. I felt like Indiana Jones about to cross a huge canyon, trusting that the bridge would appear before me as I took each step.”

Nancy oversaw the production of Treasure Cove, the first Disney theme park land themed entirely to pirates, anchored by the award-winning Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure. This jaw-

dropping attraction seamlessly blends Disney storytelling and cutting-edge technology to take guests on a thrilling nautical adventure. It was a daunting task, but Nancy and her team pulled it off.

“Everything I had done to this point helped me navigate a complicated new world successfully,” Nancy said, while quickly giving credit to her team. “The breadth of talent and skill on a project of this scale is what makes the impossible, possible. When you’re surrounded by incredible people and supported by an organization like Imagineering, fear subsides and is overtaken by tremendous excitement.”

Today Nancy is focused on the expansion of Shanghai Disney Resort, and she relies on a philosophy honed by many years in the themed entertainment business to guide her.

“Being an artist of any kind requires you be in touch with a pretty special place inside you,” Nancy said. “You have to open up your heart, reach into your soul and be vulnerable and empathetic. But you also need to have a certain amount of armor in place so you can manage the business aspects of a project with a cool head.

“Keeping this delicate balance between vulnerability and armor has been at the heart of my journey — a journey in understanding humanity and navigating the complexities of the world. It is life at its fullest, and I feel very grateful to have found my way here.”

In addition to the Buzz Price Thea Award - Recognizing a Lifetime of Distinguished Achievements, Nancy has also received an honorary doctorate from the North Carolina School of the Arts and was the first woman to sit on the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions annual Legends panel.

“Somewhere between private equity and venture capital lies a type of investor that needs to be encouraged to fund our industry’s inevitable growth.”

Wendy Heimann-Nunes is a well-known attorney and a familiar face in the themed entertainment community. She is receiving the Peter Chernack Award in recognition of her many dedicated years of service as pro-bono counsel of the Themed Entertainment Association. Her company, Nolan Heimann LLP, describes itself as one of “attorneys and advisers who help you develop your ideas, protect your work, leverage your assets, structure the right deals and operate at your maximum potential.”

How did you get your start in the industry? I was a communications major in college (Northwestern University). A class called “Rhetoric of Contemporary Culture” first introduced me to the concept of “environmental persuasion” - the notion that a themed, immersive environment can invite (that is, persuade) a guest to stay longer and - candidly - spend more money.

The early stages of my career include working as a talent agent in Chicago, and running the landmark Chicago Theater on State Street. I obtained my law degree from The University of Chicago Law School. In doing a major deal with Disney Development Corp., which at the time was revitalizing Times Square, I awoke to the power of location-based entertainment as a vehicle for revitalizing communities.

I moved to Los Angeles. Everyone assumed I would pursue traditional entertainment platforms like television and film, but I followed my interest in environmental storytelling. From 2000-2004, I served as head of business and legal affairs for Universal Creative. I got lucky – the emergence of digital entertainment at that time presented great

challenges to the entertainment industry at large. I foresaw that location-based and immersive entertainment eventually would get its due, and I seized the opportunity.

Tell us more about your company and your work. We started Nolan Heimann LLP to provide legal services strategically, with a pragmatic approach that fosters entrepreneurship and growth. For the most part, the firm serves as general corporate counsel for small to midsize companies and individuals who have creative or technological assets as their core business. It’s my passion to help these creators and innovators protect, monetize and leverage what they do. As the firm has grown, however, our client list has grown to include much larger, rather notable companies.

My practice has expanded to include a lot of licensing work, including representing developers working with studios to license entertainment properties and studios/ IP holders interested in monetizing within location-based entertainment (LBE). I also continue to represent industry service providers of all kinds, who in general are sorely

under-represented, and need legal representation that reflects a genuine understanding of the industry. I found it astonishing that LBE was the only sector within entertainment that did not have outside industry-specific legal advisors.

Where do you see the future of themed entertainment? What is the next frontier?

As mentioned earlier, it was clear to me that themed entertainment would surge in importance as a result of the disruption caused by digital technology. Those of us who were aware of the emerging technologies, the changing entertainment industry and the economic forces knew that the people who created these cross-platform multimedia integrated stories would be - should be - the ones to win the day. This is the group leading the charge because holistic storytelling, cross-platforming, seamless integration and immersive entertainment are where it’s at today. For years, the industry has been using the word “immersive.” Now everyone in the mainstream uses it too.

I would like to see us apply our core competencies farther and farther into overlapping and relevant industries. This is, really, why I am so crazy-passionate about this: We are about monetizing assets that other people don’t realize are assets.

The next frontier that I’m committed to penetrating, which I find absent in our industry, is capital sources for mid-tier and lower-tier opportunities - things that are not going to be funded by investment banks or the huge corporations. We need to free up capital for the growing, midmarket, experiential developments and their associated technologies – all the things that emanate from such things as escape rooms, smaller FECs, etc. It’s a void I’m committed to filling. Somewhere between private equity and venture capital lies a type of investor that needs to be encouraged to fund our industry’s inevitable growth. Retail-pocalypse, anyone?

How long have you been with TEA? What motivates you to stay involved?

Ever since I can remember, I have wanted to create – to be a part of something that was about creating.

My creativity manifests itself in creating structures and opportunities in which others can create successfully. And that is my flow. It’s not a job for me; it’s my oxygen.

My first Thea Awards was in 1999. I simply loved it. I am drawn to this creative, innovative industry. The rebel in me is a bit “Norma Rae” (I’m aging myself). The themed entertainment community is comprised almost entirely of small companies with small margins, in a very cyclical industry. They need support, they need representation. TEA is there for them. I am there for them too, and I’m there for TEA as well.

The buyers in our industry - the big operators and developers – need TEA member companies to make their projects successful. That means those small companies need to stay healthy in the down part of the cycle, so that they’ll be available in the robust times. And, the healthier these companies are, the more research and development that can fuel the industry at large. What is good for our members is good for the “buyers,” long-term. May I say that again? What is good for our members is good for the “buyers,” long-term!

It’s important when doing deals, whatever side you are on, that you really think creatively about the use of IP and try to preserve as much opportunity as possible. With respect to vendor communities, this means to be more aggressive about participating in the upside of the IP you create - the possible uses and the yet-unthought-of uses.

I am passionate about making sure that people who create learn to value it as robustly as possible. Art, creativity and innovation are fundamental to humanity. Society needs them.

I’m a drummer, and the same flow that I feel when I’m drumming is how I feel when I help creators create, developers develop, deals get done, lives enriched with the power of immersive storytelling. I have truly coupled my vocation with my avocation. I am blessed.

In this 14,000-square-foot, 30-minute, walk-through experience, guests visit 15 immersive scenes interpreting key stories from the Hebrew Old Testament (Torah). Informed by rigorous theological scholarship and reviewed by a diverse panel of experts, the narrative is carefully non-denominational, designed to inform without proselytizing, proving a thoughtful interpretation that audiences can engage with whatever their type or level of observance.

This exhibit takes museum interpretation to a high level of immersive and artistic presentation. Each room is unique in presentation format and aesthetic design - as if conceived and executed by a different artist each

time - and this diversity of presentation helps keeps guests engaged and anticipatory. The sensitive treatment is combined with impressive effects and astute theatrical pacing.

The final takeaway for the guests is powerfully emotional, profound and stirring, without “preaching.” The Hebrew Bible Experience represents an outstanding solution to a formidable, interpretive design challenge and demonstrates a high level of excellence.

Christie Eclipse 4K RGB Pure Laser Projector

Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement - Technical Innovation

The first public use of the Christie® Eclipse true HDR RGB pure laser projector, after five years in development, was in a permanent installation at the prestigious Hayden Planetarium in New York City. It premiered in July 2019, combining six custom units to project a unified image onto the planetarium’s 87-foot diameter dome. Christie Eclipse provides an unparalleled visual experience. This fully packaged and integrated projector is a true step into the future of projection, delivering a highly saturated color range for ultra-realistic, immersive experiences, combining true HDR performance with an expansive color gamut approaching the full Rec. 2020/Rec. 2100 color space.

Audiences are immersed in a degree of detail and depth of color never before possible in any pro AV projection system, with a previously unimaginable 20,000,000:1 contrast ratio. “Video black” has become true black.

In addition, this unique projector offers full compatibility with an array of standard 4K projector lenses. It also makes use of Christie TruLife™ electronics, which deliver powrful video processing that supports high frame rate video of 120 frames per second at 4K for detail-rich visuals and 3D processing. The electronics are combined with astable and reliable RGB laser light source that provides 30,000 hours of optimal brightness performance to 80% brightness and up to 26,000 lumens.

This projector was developed by a Christie R&D group focused on projection advancement targeting the specific needs of the themed entertainment industry. The Thea Awards Committee commends this group for its specific contribution and continuing interest to support the industry with uniquely relevant technologies.

Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement - Attraction

This “story coaster” at Universal’s Islands of Adventure™ puts guests onto the motorbike of Hagrid - one of the most beloved characters in the Harry Potter canon - for a milelong, wild ride through the mysterious Forbidden Forest of the wizarding world. The bike has been bewitched by the befuddled Arthur Weasley and the ride takes immersive experience to a new level in its combination of storytelling and innovative roller coaster technology with rich environments and sets - including an actual woodland of more than 1,200 live trees, populated by many of the story’s most infamous creatures.

This new roller coaster attraction is located in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, on the prior site of the Dragon Challenge in Universal Studios' Orlando park. Dubbed a “Story Coaster,” this thriller puts guests in the driver’s seat, or the sidecar, of a reproduction of Hagrid’s motorbike. Vehicles get up to speeds of 50 mph,

experience seven separate launches, travel in multiple directions and plunge in a surprise 40-foot free-fall drop, all to an emotional score. On their journey with Hagrid, guests encounter such creatures as the devilish Cornish pixies, a Centaur, a blast ended screwt, Unicorns and last but not least, the oversized Fluffy, the three-headed dog!

This ride is not only packed with incredible thrills, but also amazing visuals. Great care was taken to create an ambiance of the dense and populated forest of the stories. Every creature and set is beautifully created in high production detail, just as fans would expect them to look. Care was taken to have the vehicle slow at these scenes, so guests have time to take them in and enjoy. The musical score adds yet another layer of the senses. This unique ride truly delivers in a new and fun way on The Wizarding World of Harry Potter experience, where the audience has high expectations.

Award for Outstanding Achievement - Brand Experience

With only four days of physical operation at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show, one of the largest trade shows in the world, The Google Assistant Ride carried more than 25,000 guests through a custom, 30,000-square-foot show building and delivered an exceptional, ride-based attraction experience with theme-park-quality animation, special effects and show lighting. The 15-minute experience included a three-minute puppeteer interactive preshow and a five-minute ride incorporating extensive use of animatronics, an original song, fog and scent machines as well as on-board video to demonstrate Google technologies.

The story followed a hapless father as he grappled with numerous obstacles on a "not-so" epic journey to buy a birthday cake - ample opportunity to showcase Google Assistant technologies making everyday life easier. After completing the short, four-day operating window, 37

million social network impressions had been made and another million plus virtual riders explored the attraction via a YouTube 360 interactive experience.

It's no small task to punch through the clutter at the yearly CES confab, regarded to be one of the “noisiest” competitive environments with over 180,000 participants. Google's challenge was to create an experience where even the most skeptical audience members left the ride with a clearer understanding of how the Google Assistant can help navigate life’s twists and turns. Their concept worked, and critics agreed. In the CNBC survey of CES, The Google Assistant Ride was proclaimed “The most impressive experience ever seen at any trade show.” From a TEA perspective, this achievement signals a gateway into a previously untapped market and expands the realm of possibiilities.

Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement - Connected Immersion on a Limited Budget

The Poverty Encounter team created a 90-minute, guided walk-through immersive experience with the purpose of educating children and their parents about the millions of children living in extreme poverty around the world. The guided walking tour makes excellent use of multisensory storytelling tools (narrative, environment, sensory stimulation, technology, and media) combined with knowledgeable tour guides to deliver on the mission promise.

Beginning in a lobby themed as an airport terminal, guests explore a series of environments representing scenes of extreme poverty in four different countries and conveying a sense of how families and children endeavor to survive in those conditions. They visit a garbage dump

in Guatemala, the aftermath of an earthquake in Haiti, a brickyard in Nepal and the sewers of Romania where orphans take refuge.

At the end of the tour, instead of feeling there is nothing one can do, guests have the opportunity to engage in a concrete activity, such as packing bags of pasta or beans to help feed a family of four. There are also ways to remain engaged after the visit. Children are given cardboard box piggy banks with suggestions for ways to earn 25 cents a day, the cost to provide one meal to a child in need. An additional way to help is to buy items from the gift shop in the lobby, which sells products from the four countries toured.

First opened in 1933 as a museum of polar exploration history, since 2011 The Fram Museum has been in the process of updating the exhibits, interactives and media that contextualize its centerpiece, Fram herself - a wooden ship considered to be the strongest such ever built and part of three important polar expeditions between 18931912.

Visiting the historic ship is now a multimedia, multisensory adventure. On the deck, guests begin their journey south from the frozen Arctic ice cap to the ice shelf of Antarctica. A 270-degree, panoramic screen helps create the illusion they are surrounded by raging storms and crashing waves. Making their way downstairs, guests find their way to the engine room, where they hear the rumble of the ship’s original engine and see the flickering of its

flames as the smell of diesel fuel fills the air. Elsewhere, they get a sense of freezing cold and the sounds of ice crushing the ship.

In addition to the museum’s various immersive environments, media experiences, exhibits and interactives, a variety of artifacts are displayed to further educate guests about the history of the legendary Fram. In the Young Explorers Zone, children of all ages can explore an igloo and put together a physical puzzle to learn about the Inuit people and how to correctly pack a sleigh.

In one of the most fun attractions recently built at Walibi Belgium, Popcorn Revenge®, a trackless dark ride, takes guests on a wild and erratic adventure in which rogue, cartoon-like characters (animated popcorn), tired of being eaten by cinema-goers, take over a Bollywood-themed movie theater. Of all the nominations reviewed by the Thea Awards Committee, this attraction, hands down, had everyone grinning from ear to ear.

Brand new IPs are tricky to execute, but Popcorn Revenge delivers with its delightful mix of quirky characters, pun-filled signage and simple-yet-effective gameplay. In a footprint of just 800 square meters, this unique family attraction tells a compelling story, demonstrates excellence in design and décor, and exemplifies an affordable option for regional family parks. It begins with

a very atmospheric queue line filled with popcorn movie posters, ticketing machines and “pop-o-matic” vignettes and continues as a ride through animated transitions and interactive scenery where, armed with shooters themed as caramel dispensers (reactive shooters), each guest has more than 1,000 chances to disarm and essentially immobilize the cheeky, crazy corns.

Popcorn Revenge has a high capacity relative to its limited footprint, and an expansive merchandise offering. From ride to ride, the experience varies in terms of gameplay, scenes and vehicle paths, motivating guests to return. The proprietary can be adjusted to different themes or regional tastes. Overall, this innovative and delightful attraction highlights a new frontier in balancing high-energy creative with successful investment.

For Walibi Belgium this is the second time they have won a TEA Thea Award. The first time, the ‘Challange of Tutankhamon’ became the dark ride winner. Award for Outstanding Achievement - Theme Park

The first-ever Warner Bros. branded indoor theme park brings together more than 50 branded characters of Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment, letting guests enter the worlds and meet the characters of Looney Tunes, DC Super Heroes and more under one roof. Warner Bros. World is divided into six lands, with 29 rides, interactive attractions, themed dining, live entertainment and retail. All the elements work together to deliver a unique experience for a broad theme park audience of all ages.

Offerings include exceptional multimedia experiences, such as dark rides Batman: Knight Flight (using robotic arm technology) and Ani-Mayhem (using a trackless vehicle system) - both standout attractions among a host of highly themed and story-driven dark rides, theater shows and other family-oriented experiences.

The sets and area theming are exceptionally well-done down to the finest details. The six themed zones – Warner Bros. Plaza, Bedrock, Dynamite Gulch, Cartoon Junction, Gotham City, and Metropolis – are each true to their own narrative and do an excellent job of bringing these cartoon characters and stories to life. Costumed characters engage with guests throughout the park. Dining experiences utilize Warner Bros. properties in a creative and clever way, and stores are lined with Warner Bros. merchandise showcasing the zones and attractions within the park.

The quality is excellent, and the park is truly beautiful from top to bottom. This entirely new park, Warner Bros. World™ Abu Dhabi, represents what we in the themed entertainment industry all strive for in terms of excellence in design.

Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement - Attraction

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, set in the new Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge land, is a fully interactive adventure where guests have agency and input, and their performance as a team determines the outcome. This flight simulation attraction combines numerous bleeding-edge technologies seamlessly and invisibly to immerse guests in an intimate, story-driven, adventure like no other in theme park history.

Weequay pirate Hondo Ohnaka recruits guests for a clandestine run to get resources for Chewbacca to obtain some much-needed replacement parts for the Millennium Falcon, aka the “fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.” They board the ship and enter the main hold and lounge, where they can even take a photo sitting at the famous Dejarik (holochess) table! But that’s just the precursor to the mission. They are next assigned into flight crews of

six — two pilots, two gunners and two flight engineers — taking their positions within the Falcon’s iconic cockpit.

The Falcon is screen-accurate in every detail, both from the outside as the queue wraps around and above its massive exterior, as well as inside its signature hallways and iconic cockpit, from which guests steer the famous craft through Star Wars space thanks to cinema quality, real-time visuals and responsive controls. Immersive spatial audio and incabin lighting effects complete the illusion of piloting one of the most famous spaceships in all of movie history.

This is a crowning achievement of our industry. Guests are empowered to live their own Star Wars adventure, quite literally taking the story into their own hands, as the attraction authentically brings to life one of the most iconic experiences in pop culture.

Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement - Connected Immersion

This feature-length, walk-through experience effectively combines physical and virtual environments with live performance, guest interaction and effects to an unprecedented extent, keeping the audience engaged for 110 minutes. The story unfolds across more than two dozen physical rooms/scenes, interspersed with nearly as many virtual/digital scenes delivered along the way. Twelve live characters play in the scenes, sometimes accompanying the guests in person and sometimes trading off to virtual actors.

Guests pass from built environments to VR and back again to experience the settings, characters and action. These daring combinations come together in a wellorchestrated narrative that powerfully combines immersive theater with virtual technologies to deliver much larger moments. Guests arrive at the Spirit of Man bar/pub on Leadenhall St. The space, themed as a leftover from the war with the alien tripods from Mars, serves as the point of departure for the journey, the ticketing and waiting

area, and the place to eat, drink, and socialize afterwards. The adventure includes witnessing the Martians land in the English countryside, following and interacting with various characters in the battle including a scientist, rebels, a religious cult and a wounded soldier, taking refuge in a farmhouse and a cemetery, surviving various attacks and being taken prisoner by the Martians.

This novel and highly ambitious re-imagining of the classic story pushes past previous limits into the future of seamless multimedia storytelling. It is outstanding beyond its many technical achievements, in particular its sheer ambition and duration. It even manages to add to the War of the Worlds story, making it feel fresh, with forgotten twists and turns reinterpreted. The unconventional music soundtrack makes the experience unique and consistent. This attraction brings together many aspects of our industry (and touches on some others) on a scale that challenges us to think of other complex stories that could be told on a large scale. It is a trend to encourage.

The Cool Planet Experience

Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement - Museum, Limited Budget

The Cool Planet Experience applies impressive technology, scenic environments, theatrical lighting and effects, clever visuals and gamification to captivate guests from the moment they receive their interactive wristbands. Located in an historic estate, the experience targets schoolchildren and their families, making climate change relevant at a personal level, inspiring them to become Agents for Change and remain engaged beyond the actual visit.

Several rooms of activities are linked together for a linear experience, and each activity uses a different form of real-time, interactive gaming technology and media for cognitive and physical engagement. “The Disaster Room” uses giant horizontal format media projection to immerse visitors in the realities of climate breakdown. The “Science Dome” asks guests to tag in their wristbands to compare against Irish and world carbon footprint averages. “The Race to 2030” is a series of interactive games in a race to

correct the course of a digitally-mapped dimensional model of a future city. The “F Word Game” is a mock game show with a “live” on screen host that utilizes overhead cameras to track visitor choices. The animated film “Forest of Hope” takes a positive outlook on how adults and children can make changes now to contribute to a clean energy future.

The final stage of the journey is “Brighter Futures” in which holographic media and interactive stations help guests discover they have the power to make a difference. After their visit, guests can log on to update their progress and upgrade their pledges using their wristbands' unique Agent ID. We can’t think of a better application of themed entertainment and storytelling. The Cool Planet Experience has the power to engage youth to care about our planet, motivating them with personalized actions to reduce their impact, and getting them to spread the word that sustainability is not only possible, but cool!

The world-renowned Grand Parc du Puy du Fou is wellknown for immersing its visitors in the rich and vibrant living history of France since its inception in 1978. This new attraction, “Le Premier Royaume” (“The First Kingdom”) is a multi-sensory walkthrough experience set in fifth-century France, in which guests journey through the history and legend of the Frankish king Clovis.

As the Roman empire falls and Attila the Hun invades, Clovis is caught between the ancestral traditions of his people and a quest to create the first United Kingdom of the Franks. The 18-minute show leads guests through 14 scenes (nearly 24,000 square feet). Each scene is centered around a critical stage of Clovis’ life.

Along the journey, guests encounter a captivating mixture of storytelling mediums which include: detailed historical environments (including more than 10,000 props), rich environmental soundscapes, seamlessly integrated show lighting, massive animated props, animatronic figures, dazzling special effects (including an interactive, zerogravity Pagan fountain room and the largest aqua wall graphic in the world), live character actors, video projection vignettes and an epic 360 degree, 16-projector immersive display depicting the tragic battle of Tolbiac.

Le Premier Royaume beautifully and seamlessly blends modern technology, highly immersive environments, and the park’s signature, live performance roots to craft a tangible world of legend and lore, in which to tell an evergreen story: Heroes Are Eternal.

Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement - Live Show Spectacular

The Legend of the Gods - one of a series of “Legends” productions created by Shandong Huaxia Cultural Tourism Group - is a seasonal, one-hour show and Chinese cultural celebration. It delivers a phenomenal theatrical vision married to world-class production and execution. Guests cross a gangplank to enter a vehicle - seating 2,100 - shaped and themed as a boat, to experience a live, multimedia spectacular in a breathtaking, outdoor setting.

The fluid way the audience is positioned and moved is worthy of special attention. The boat travels along a track through a man-made lagoon to carry guests into the story. They visit seven distinct scenes of beauty and amazement - some set on land and some on water - with 200 performers, animatronic figures, live horses, pyrotechnics, 300 square meters of LED projection walls, fountains,

special effects, a 5,000-ton waterfall, an erupting volcano and monumental set pieces.

But the show - which forms the centerpiece of the Huaxiacheng Tourism Scenic Area - could not exist were it not for the 16-year commitment and dedication of resources by Huaxia Chairman Xia Chunting to reclaim and restore thousands of acres of mining quarry - an undertaking that included moving 60 million cubic feet of fill and planting more than 11 million trees.

Awe and wonder abound and astound. Legend of the Gods is peak entertainment, excellence on a celestial scale and more than worthy of the award. In particular, the TEA Thea Awards Committee commends Chairman Xia for his environmental commitment.

The most ambitious addition to Disneyland Park in 60 years, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is a groundbreaking new land that invites guests into a new chapter of the Star Wars saga, one in which they are the stars. Introducing an entirely new planet within the Star Wars canon, this multifaceted experience combines epic and detailed placemaking, themed retail & dining, immersive theater techniques, and interactive attractions into an audacious, genre-redefining, 14-acre adventure that lets park guests live their own Star Wars story in ways never before possible within a theme park.

Set in the timeline immediately after Star Wars: The Last Jedi, this incredibly immersive land invites guests to “lean in” as active story participants. Guests explore the rugged and beautiful Black Spire Outpost on the Outer Rim planet of Batuu - once a thriving stop for traders and travelers before the advent of lightspeed travel, now a remote haven for smugglers and rogues and a burgeoning hotbed in the struggle between the oppressive First Order and the heroic Resistance. Every facet of the experience offers an astounding level of guest agency; traditional character

greetings become story-driven, chance encounters; retail experiences like Savi’s Workshop become emotional and heroic calls to action, allowing guests to “feel the Force” for themselves as they craft their own custom lightsaber; cast-member interactions evoke a wholly-created local lexicon and slang; attractions become fully participatory and encourage group collaboration.

The intricate layout, sophisticated use of scale, extension of character details and high quality of execution combine to make this an outstanding example of storydriven experiential design, leveraging 40 years of Star Wars stories, emotions, and cultural touchstones. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge blurs the line between guest and experience, making every detail as “in-world” and believable as possible - from scenery to soundscape, to retail and food, to the training of the Batuuan “villagers” (Disneyland cast members) who populate the town.

We’ve never seen a theme park land like this before, and it just might change how we create them in the future.
