THE MUST HAVE, MUST GO, MUST KNOW

SPIRITED CELEBRATIONS

Hemisphere, as a definition, is half of a sphere, or in this case applies to a dinner venue that caters to those who seek that upper stratum in a refined dining experience. The owner, Christopher Cox, was raised on the south shore of Long Island, and felt there was a need for a new restaurant where the locals could go and enjoy a chef’s inspired menu and a true cocktail lounge, while enjoying live music.

Mr. Cox remarked to The List, “Living locally, it seemed there was always a void when it came time to go out for the evening. Working in Manhattan for many years, and having enjoyed the cocktail lounges and restaurants, I wanted to bring that type of venue to the Great South Bay area. There is a need for this part of the island to have an incredible place to dine, host a private party or listen to live music, all while enjoying a quality cocktail.”

And the space is indeed impressive. Upon entering, it is immediately apparent that meticulous attention was given to even the smallest of interior design and visual details. A beautiful custom-crafted, globe-shaped chandelier gently illuminates and provides a warm welcome. Framed by fine woodwork, fabrics and fixtures, the large contemporary dining room offers a variety of seating areas: comfortable high back leather booths in intimate arrangements; traditional dining tables; and walls of banquettes. Warm color tones, a wall fireplace and a changing roster of live musical performances further enhance the unique and welcoming atmosphere of Hemisphere, where even non-visual details have been carefully considered - a high-tech sound system is enhanced by acoustical panels, engineered to ensure patrons can dine, relax and enjoy the live entertainment in comfort.

A chic secluded lounge is a perfect alternative to the bar and dining area, and is available to host private functions and events. Hemisphere’s sophisticated staff will go out of their way to accommodate and cater to all your needs.

Beyond the beauty of the space and the attentive staff is the creative fare, owing to two talented young chefs. Will Kelly and Jermaine LeGendre are both formally trained in the culinary arts. Finding inspiration in their visual surroundings, these chefs collaborate in creating modern American dishes and classic favorites with an upscale twist. The seasonally changing menu is crafted around local resources and seasonal availability.

A great venue to just lounge and listen to live music, Hemisphere boasts one of the best cocktail menus on Long Island. The menu was designed by Chris Cardone - an award-winning mixologist - and includes three categories of cocktails: seasonal delights, classics and modern twists. Also offered are craft beers and fine wines from around the globe.

Hemisphere is now starting its fall dining season. Visit this upscale gem and see why it’s a welcome new addition to the Great South Bay area and a shining example of a “Must Go!”

Letter From The Publisher

The world may be harsh, and all you may see with your eyes are problems. But, as many of us have witnessed, if you look with your hearts, you will see miracles all around.

In good times and bad, the story of the human spirit is the story of people who believe in themselves and in one another. In this issue, especially with respect to the one year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy and our focus on Breast Cancer, you will find a common thread: To Give, To Restore and To Celebrate. Every one of us has experienced both at different times. There is so much courage, goodness and possibility in each of us and, as a new season unfolds, so does the chance for new beginnings, celebration and hope. Enjoy the season...

Local Idea Attracts National Attention

I Shrink Wrapped My Home And Saved It

From Storm Sandy!

We all knew that Storm Sandy was coming, but I don’t think anyone anticipated the severity of the wind and tide.

An idea came to me in the middle of the storm. I called my good friend and trusted boat maintenance man, Dennis McCann: “What if we shrink wrap the house?” I asked.

Dennis had white shrink wrap boat material leftover from his boat-wrap business. He laid the 18’ wide material in my garage, cutting it into three strips, each 6 feet wide. He then used his “flame thrower” to melt the plastic and attached the 6’ wide strips end-to-end to create one long strip. We then rolled up the single 6’ wide plastic strip and brought it to the back of the house for installation.

Dennis and I worked together, placing the strip along the back of the house about 3 feet above the ground along the side of the home, as well as 3 feet along the ground. We secured the plastic with wood furring strips (approximately 1-1/2” wide) along the side of the house, screwed it into the siding with wood screws. We secured the plastic to the ground with the use of some leftover paver bricks.

How well did this this shrink wrap method work? Incredibly, the tide was estimated to be about 10” to 15” above the ground level – and yet not a drop of water entered my home!

Must Know: Professional Stone RestorationStone Care

Granite and marble are beautiful applications for countertops and floors, but can easily become scratched or damaged through wear and tear. Luckily, it is possible for your stone to look new again, and most scratches and etch marks can be removed.

Restoration of stone is the process of refurbishing worn surfaces - marble, travertine, granite, etc - to their original states. This process involves the removal of scratches and/or damage from the surface of the stone by means of mechanical abrasion, also known as “diamond grinding.”

This technique should be performed by a professional Stone Restoration Company with the knowledge, equipment and experience needed to understand and work with the material properly. These experts should be able to advise you on how to avoid future damage as well, preventing any future need for a complete restoration.

“We highly recommend Stone Care. Their technician was able to remove the stains on my marble countertop, and it now looks as beautiful as the day it was installed!” - JL

Cheers To Craft Beers Spotlight On Long Island Brews

Long Island’s Craft Beer scene has emerged in the past decade as one of the most vibrant in the country, with award-winning breweries, top-notch brew pubs and beer bars, an active home brewing community and numerous festivals.

Donnavan Hall, of Rocky Point Artisan Brewers, said it perfectly: “Craft Beer isn’t just a mildly intoxicating beverage - it isn’t just a product to be sold for money. Craft beer is food; it nourishes the body and the soul. Craft breweries have to be small. Smallness is essential to maintaining the human contact with the food. Large-scale industrial manufacturing of food and all the packaging that goes with that system severs the connection between nature and humans. This isn’t just some mystical credo propped up by a neolocalist ideology - you can taste it. Food from a small farm, close to your home, tastes better than ‘industrial food.’ Anyone who’s part of a CSA knows this, experiences viscerally, with the senses - not just the taste, but the look and the aroma. It’s the same with the liquid food: beer. When humans make something with their hands, they imprint themselves on what they make - soul, humanity, beauty, connection. Machines can’t impart what the body needs.”

Craft Beer tastes better than traditional beer...

Craft Beer, made in small batches, is often distinguished by the creativity of its brew masters in using local, seasonal ingredients. Island beer menus may feature Long Island Potato Stout, from Blind Bat Brewery in Centerport, or Snaggletooth Stout, made with roasted chocolate malt and Long Island apples from Great South Bay Brewery in Bay Shore.

On Saturday, October 26th, the Great South Bay Brewery is bringing together the local and international brewing

communities to celebrate the change of season by hosting its First Annual PunktOberfest. They plan to accent the event by bringing in a handful of local punk rock bands to round out the day.

Although you may have your favorites, part of the fun is trying different craft beers from different breweries. Local brew pubs and beer bars such as The Nutty Irishman feature Craft Beers on tap - 22 were counted at its Farmingdale location! A popular seasonal favorite, Pumpkin Spice, can be enjoyed at John Harvard’s Brew House in Lake Grove (now available).

This website is dedicated to helping people find and enjoy great beer on Long Island, with guides to breweries, brew pubs, beer bars, restaurants that respect great beer, event listings and other useful information, and was compiled by its publisher, Bernie Kilkelly.

One key point to remember while sampling: Beer is the opposite of wine, - the fresher the better!” Cheers!

Most people think of apples, peaches, pears, pumpkin and cinnamon when they think of fall flavors. Many start to drink darker and heavier spirits like bourbon and scotch, and beers like ambers and stouts. Red wine begins to dominate palates again in place of Rosé and light white wines like Sauvignon Blanc.

When it comes to creating cocktails in the colder months, many bartenders look to darker spirits, exchanging whisky or whiskey and aged rum for vodka, gin and tequila. When using darker spirits, which have a very strong taste profile, you most remember to make sure that your drinks remain balanced. Drinks that are too strong, too sour or too sweet usually just need a little ingredient tweaking to turn them into balanced, delicious drinks. Bartenders also utilize infusions and homemade syrups to capture flavors like thyme, ginger, pears, lavender and pomegranate.

Chris Cardone has been tending bar and creating cocktails for over 14 years. Since 1999, he has received awards in both mixology and the art of flair bartending. He has appeared on NBC, ABC, CBS, USA, Spike TV, E-television and The Jimmy Fallon Show, and in Newsday, New York Magazine, FHM Magazine and Chilled Magazine, among others. Cardone is currently a full-time bartender in New York City, as well as a cocktail consultant on Long Island.

In each upcoming issue, Chris Cardone will be offering up seasonal cocktail recipes as well as education on how spirits are made and how they differ from one another, and answer any questions our readers may have.

When Hurricane Sandy severely damaged the Cool Water Grill in Bay Shore, the owners of the restaurant decided to rebuild a brand new, casual/chic establishment in its place.

Once construction was completed, the name “Swept Away” was chosen by a vote of students and faculty from a neighboring elementary school. The new moniker implies a fresh start, as well as explaining the reason for it. As one of the owners, Pete DeNatalie, explains, “We kept what our clientele loves about us and then some.” Swept Away maintains the same inviting vibe as the former CWG, focusing on offering great food at affordable prices, served by a welcoming, friendly staff.

We love the interior design for its fresh, contemporary, nautical flair. It draws attention with its use of natural materials, including reclaimed barn wood tastefully interwoven

throughout the interior. The 25’ steel bar is nicely separated from the dining area and offers an appealing space where you can enjoy drinks with friends.

The chef and owner have put together both a lunch and dinner menu that satisfies all tastes. Some favorite appetizers include baked clams and sesame tuna, seafood hummus and golden toasted calamari, to name a few.

Fridays are especially fun with featured live music by a variety of different artists, as well as happy hour drink prices. The owners are delighted to see their regular customers return and look forward to welcoming many new faces as the word catches on.

When people go out to eat nowadays, they want both their palates and their eyes to be stimulated, and this is a great place for both. We are so glad to have them in The List!

How to give a room a new look without breaking the bank

Redecorating a room or an entire house can change the entire feel of the space dramatically. But an unpredictable economy has made many consumers a little more particular when it comes to spending on home decor.

Changing elements in a room does not have to be expensive. A few updated pieces or accessories can give a room an entirely new look without breaking the bank.

Knobs and Pulls

Breathe new life into older furniture by changing the knobs, draw pulls and handles. Many times, furniture comes with standard brass knobs that can look dated over time. Using sleeker, more streamlined knobs can make traditional furniture look more modern. Changing pulls from metal to wood can make a room look more earthy or country. Home improvement stores and accessory retailers stock a wide variety of handles and knobs that can transform just about any piece of furniture. What cannot be found in a store can most likely be purchased online.

Paint or Stain

Painting a room’s walls a different color can provide immediate results, but furniture can also be painted and stained. Many times, older furniture is made from quality wood, not the type of composite or pressboard wood of some less expensive furniture options. That means that finishes can be stripped and replaced with new stains. Turn a dated dresser into something that looks brand new with a new stain color or a coat of paint. Think about painting or staining using foam sponges to reduce the appearance of brush lines.

accessorize

Swapping out curtains, throw pillows and even wall art can easily and often inexpensively transform the look of a room. Homeowners can purchase accessories with bright colors that add a pop of brightness throughout the room and can provide a pick-me-up for neutral design tones.

Older lamps can be given a new look just by replacing lamp shades. There are many affordable options at discount stores and major retailers.

Area rugs can also transform a room with little effort. Bring in a new color scheme with a different patterned rug and carry the pattern to stairways with runners.

Giving a room a new look and feel can be done without breaking the bank.

We love the StairMaster StepMill for its super workout! We asked Bill May, General Manager and Personal Trainer at World Gym of Bay Shore, why we’re dripping after a few minutes on this machine, and is it more beneficial than the other machines available at the gym?

Stairclimbing engages all of the large muscle groups of the lower body, primarily the quadriceps, with secondary assistance of the hip flexors, glutes, hamstrings and calf muscles. The hip flexion motion is in a vertical, weight-bearing plane, which requires a significantly greater expenditure of energy than other traditional cardio exercises. This greater energy expenditure translates into peak exertion being attained faster, resulting in a greater number of calories being burned.

Various studies have concluded that, depending upon body weight and an individual’s metabolic rate, some exercisers can burn up to 300 calories in a 30-minute workout. Those who are heavier, who have a higher metabolic rate or who are exercising at higher intensities, can burn even more. Because the movement has the potential for high intensity in a short time span, it is generally not recommended for beginners; as conditioning improves, it can be slowly added at low intensities for short durations.

Using a StairMaster StepMill, even on a periodic basis, can be a great cross training alternative to conventional cardio activities. Using a variety of activities (cross training) on a regular basis will greatly challenge your energy systems, and help maximize the benefits.

We hate having to cut back on food after the summer or holidays! Is it possible to stay in shape throughout the year without dieting?

We asked Jonathan Sorto, Certified Personal Fitness Trainer of World Gym, his thoughts, and he offered the following advice...

Change one simple thing. That should be your mind set. It all starts by changing your attitude and slowly changing your lifestyle.

Staying in shape throughout the year is simple. For starters, change your eating habits. Don’t look at it as a diet, because then you tend to push away from it; but, rather, as a change in your eating habits that will help you reach your goals and provide more natural energy.

It’s important to fuel our bodies at all times, or at least every two hours, with a small portion-sized meal. It is best to eat six small-portioned meals a day. Why? Well, it will speed up your metabolism, help burn fat and avoid starvation, which, in turn, results in “stuffing your face” the moment you get the chance to eat.

Aside from eating right, it’s important to go to the gym at least 4-5 times a week for no more than one hour each time. For beginners, this may seem like a little too much. Well that’s ok! Beginners, I would recommend you go for at least 30-45 minutes a day for 3-4 times a week. Slowly but surely, your body will begin to adapt, and your muscular and cardiovascular endurance will increase. Always remember to pace yourself.

Getting in shape is not a race. Just take the first step and change your mindset, and the rest will fall into place.

Did You Know?

History Of The Thanksgiving Parade

Thousands of people line the streets of midtown Manhattan every year to catch a glimpse of the balloons and performers marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Millions more will tune in to watch it on television. The Macy’s parade is intertwined with Thanksgiving, making it as much a part of the holiday as turkey and pumpkin pie.

The parade has evolved throughout the years, and the history of the parade is both interesting and informational.

Historians believe the parade was instituted by European immigrants who made up the majority of employees at the retail giant Macy’s. In the 1920s, employees who were now proud Americans wanted to celebrate with traditions that were similar to traditions in Europe. This included a parade down the streets. Animals were borrowed from the Central Park Zoo, bands played and marchers wore different costumes.

In 1927, concern for children lining the parade route led parade officials to replace live animals with the signature helium balloons people now know and love. A dragon and Felix the Cat were some of the first balloons. The festivities continued to grow during the 1930s, when Santa was added to the parade’s growing list of participants. 1933 was the only year that Santa led the parade rather than closed it.

During World War II, the parade was put on hiatus, as the rubber for the balloons and the helium was donated to the war effort. The parade resumed in 1945 and was televised only in New York. The 1947 film Miracle On 34th Street made the parade even more popular. NBC televised the parade nationwide the following year, drawing viewers from all over the country.

Giving Back Local Salon Revives The Inner Beauty Of Women With Cancer

Though each story is unique, for the thousands of women each year whose lives are changed by a cancer diagnosis, the struggles and sacrifices that follow are a shared journey. Meeting their medical and physical needs is a community of healthcare providers who treat the disease, as well as a community of doctors and researchers who work to eradicate it, and then of course the myriad fundraisers whose tireless efforts keep the latter funded.

But for these brave women, and they are women first, managing the disease on a daily basis becomes a way of life, and it takes an unimaginable toll in so many ways. So much is compromised during their course of treatment, including a sense of comfort, certainty and normalcy. Many suffer a loss of strength, dignity, confidence and the sense of

Perhaps, sometimes the spirit needs more healing than the body... Perhaps, sometimes, what’s more important than feeling better, is feeling better about yourself... And what can a community of a different kind do to help them feel beautiful again?

When two sisters from Long Island asked these questions, after watching their mother suffer the ravaging effects of her battle with cancer, they realized that they had the ability to provide an answer as well.

So for the last several years, at the East Islip salon they own and operate, Rachel DeMolfetto and Cynthia Sansone have turned the traditionally slow third Monday of each month into what they call Mondays At Racine.

With the help of its staff, Racine devotes an entire day to the styling and pampering

of women undergoing treatment, providing services that mitigate their sense of loss and help to revive and replenish instead. This day is more than just a distraction for them. This one, lovely day offers a respite from the day-to-day suffering and challenges they face.

On this day, they are not cancer patients, but just girls… gossiping, giggling, primping, sharing… transforming a bit. On this day, the loss of their hair is defined by something other than disease.

A renewed outer beauty helps to rediscover an essential inner beauty that has been diminished or lost to them. They emerge from the experience a little lighter, with a little more grace and confidence and a noticeable bounce in their step. It is the business of beauty making these woman feel beautiful again.

It is the intent and hope that, from these efforts, will

come more. Perhaps this can be a template, Long Island - for ways to speak loudly, passionately and collectively about making an invaluable difference in the lives of sisters and friends who can benefit so profoundly from even the simplest of gestures.

With a protocol in place that offers a blueprint to others hoping to launch their own versions of this initiative, and a unified willingness to assist those salons and spas offering their time and resources to that end, there is a real opportunity to take the expansive, thriving beauty industry and turn it into a generous, community of support.

Fighting Cancer With Food

Cancer may strike even the healthiest of persons; there are ways men, women and even children can reduce their risk. One such way is to consume certain foods that researchers feel can reduce cancer risk. Though precisely how these foods fight cancer remains a mystery, cancer researchers feel they can effectively lower an individual’s cancer risk when combined to form a healthy diet.

Beans boast numerous healthy attributes, and their potential to reduce cancer risk is one such attribute. Beans contain many phytochemicals that researchers feel protect the cells from the type of damage that can ultimately make a person susceptible to cancer. Beans also have been shown to decelerate tumor growth and prevent tumors from releasing potentially harmful substances that can damage nearby cells.

It may seem odd that a food’s color can have an impact on cancer risk, but colorful fruits and vegetables contain more cancerfighting nutrients than fruits and vegetables that aren’t as flashy. Consuming such fruits and vegetables also helps men and women maintain a healthy body weight, an important benefit when considering being overweight and obese increases a person’s risk for multiple cancers.

Folate is a B vitamin that can reduce a person’s risk of developing several cancers, including those of the colon, rectum and breast.

Those who are fond of a healthy breakfast to begin their day may already be getting healthy doses of folate, which can be found in eggs, fortified breakfast cereals, orange juice and strawberries, among other foods. If toast is your breakfast of choice; opt for whole wheat toast, as whole wheat products are a good source of folate.

Tomatoes are widely beloved, and perhaps that love affair stems from the tomato’s role in fighting cancer. Though the reasons are unknown, tomatoes have been linked to lowering men’s risk for prostate cancer. One such study, a 1995 study from researchers at the Harvard Medical School, found that men who ate 10 or more servings of tomatoes per week reduced their risk of developing aggressive prostate tumors by nearly 50 percent. Later research from the author of the 1995 study found that processed tomatoes, such as those found in tomato paste and tomato sauce, were even more effective at reducing cancer risk than fresh tomatoes. Tomatoes have also been linked to lowering a person’s risk for lung and stomach cancers.

Many foods can help individuals in the fight against cancer. Though one food alone may not be potent enough to do the job, when several cancer-fighting foods are included in a person’s diet, the effects may be significant.

Spotlight On The Beehive Salon What’s All The Buzz About?

With roots originating in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, The Beehive Salon has been touted as one of NYC’s top hair salons by the Village Voice, Lucky Magazine and The New York Times

Jeanine Longo, better known as “Bean,” founder and artistic director of Beehive, brought Beehive’s newest outpost to LI’s south shore three years ago when she moved back from the city to her hometown on Long Island.

The List found this gem when the salon first opened its doors, and we love what they are doing for hair and for the community. The word on the street is that Bean and her team bring a fresh and modern approach to the salon experience by creating complete looks that are both trendy and wearable.

The most recent buzz surrounding the salon and its staff is that it was chosen by TV personality and fashion stylist Clinton Kelly for the Macy’s Grand Reopening Showcase and Clinton’s “What To Wear” Fashion event. Bean and her team created the hair styles worn by the models from the infamous Wilhelmina Agency in NYC and helped to create the hair looks for Clinton’s model makeovers.

While working as a stylist in NYC, Bean’s artistic talent and passion for hair earned her a celebrity clientele of TV personalities, musicians, models and actors. Her skill set also earned her backstage invites to Fashion Week. Bean’s passion and reputation as one

of the best in the business keeps her tapped in to the fashion world and very busy with the new client list she is rapidly building on the Island.

Bean not only knows hair, she knows how to create a cool vibe and welcoming atmosphere in her salons. “A salon is a place where you should feel special, a place that makes you feel relaxed and welcome and, most importantly, beautiful!” She says, “Nothing feels better than having a client want to hug you when you show them the finished product - and we get a lot of hugs!”

The salon’s buzz factor has increased due to its dedication to providing eco-friendly solutions to beauty. The salon specializes in organic color and formaldehyde-free smoothing treatments and recommends high-quality styling lines like UNITE, PURE NV and Jessicurl

This year, Bean launched O’Beehave, the Salon’s own line of plant-based shampoo and conditioners for hair and body. Bean worked with an Organic Chemist and the result, O’Beehave, is a “clean” product that lets the scalp and hair (and skin) just be “naked”free of harsh chemicals that

can dull and even poison hair and skin. As Bean says, “When you treat your hair to the REALLY good stuff, it just ‘Beehaves’ better!”

O’Beehave is housed in kegs, just like in a bar, and clients actively participate in the salon’s Re*Fill Project. The Refill Bar allows clients to bring in their own bottles if they choose and pay by weight. “When clients buy O’Beehave in gallons and refill their eco-kits at home, they keep 42 12-ounce bottles out of our landfills. It’s a win-win,” explains Bean. O’Beehave can also be custom-scented at the salon’s essential oil bar.

Macy’s recently invited Bean to display the O’Beehave products and showcase the Re*Fill Bar Project on their main floor. “We were set up right next to MAC! I had to pinch myself!” exclaimed Bean. “Partnering with a group like Macy’s on the O’Beehave Re*Fill Project was a dream come true!”

We say Beehive is a “Must Go”… and The Beehive says “It’s The Place to Bee.”

This year, Bean launched O’Beehave, the Salon’s own line of plant-based shampoo and conditioners for hair and body.

New York Music and Events Group has been in the making for many years. Owner and President Steve Interrante had a vision of creating an entertainment company that stands out. Being a professional musician, growing up in a musical family and being a co-owner and business manager of the popular Long Island band, That 70s Band, Steve combined his 20 years in marketing/ promotions/advertising and launched an entertainment company that not only brings excitement to any celebration but also has the capability of reaching into the community by creating events that will make a difference in people’s lives. “Helping Others Through Music” is their slogan.

He assembled a strong team of talented professionals and, along with his partner, Barbara Califano-Badler, created and developed, in association with Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, the “We Will Survive - Strong Island Music Festival.” This event will be held on October 19th, from 12:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

The Festival combines a blend of Rock, Country and 70’s Dance music, featuring headliner, the “Queen of Disco,” Gloria Gaynor. Must Have: Everyone Needs An Expert

Having a reputable master auto mechanic on call is crucial, and nowadays, having a great IT person to turn to for your computer and internet solutions is an extremely valuable resource as well.

If you are lucky enough to find an expert in either field, they can become a real asset to both your personal and business life when problems arise. Despite how far crowd-sourced online reviews have come over the years, an old-fashioned word-of-mouth recommendation from someone you trust can often be the most effective tool. Our Magazine’s mission is to recommend those businesses and professionals who we feel are worth knowing.

For taking care of the “wheels” that you so desperately depend on day to day, we are proud to recommend Tire Express, a full service auto shop located

in East Islip, with a second location in Bay Shore that caters strictly to tires. There, you can expect to receive both quality parts and service, in addition to dealing with a staff of knowledgeable, “A+ rated” mechanics. Owners Cathryn and Rob Lemon pride themselves on selling you the precise service or tire for your automobile, always putting your safety as the top priority. Their stellar reputation over the past decade has proven to be the key to their success. Most of their new business comes as a result of referrals from satisfied customers - and so, without reservation, we recommend them to you.

For those in need of a qualified IT professional, try Computerworx Computer Solutions. It is essential to realize that a computer is a machine and, as such, it will need repairs and maintenance from time to time. As technology advances at lightning speed, it becomes necessary to keep up with the proper updates that will

enable the computer to work up to its full capacity. We found that Computerworx Computer Solutions, as its name implies, does find solutions for customers’ computer needs, both residential and business. Key person Peter Rozebdalz possesses an advanced knowledge of computer repairs and upgrades. Perhaps more importantly, he will comply with your requirements and believes in having a strong communicative relationship with his customers in order to meet individual needs. Many customers attest to the fact that he will spend the necessary time it takes to both solve, train and educate you so you have a better understanding of the issue. For others who prefer to leave the problems to the professionals, they can rest assured that their computer is in good hands.

Having the right experts in your corner can make all the difference in the world. We hope these recommendations become an asset to you.

Techie Tips To Clean Up Your Computer

Few computer users have not experienced the rotating hourglass icon or the spinning rainbow ball that signifies that the system is working or bogged down by something. Over time, computers can collect bits of information, fragmented files and other data that might wreak havoc on the inner workings that make a computer tick.

While some people are tech wizards, much of the general public is not so knowledgeable when it comes to understanding computer language or even moving beyond basic tasks. However, taking the time to run maintenance on the machine or asking an IT professional to assess your computer and make recommendations can improve the function of the computer and reduce stress over the slowing down or freezing of applications. Depending on the platform you use (PC or Mac), there will be certain procedures exclusive to that platform. But in general, there are strategies anyone can take to clean out their computers and keep them running optimally.

Free Disk Space. One of the first steps is to take inventory of what you

have saved on the computer and delete extraneous or unused program files and other items. Delete optional factoryinstalled components that you don’t use as well. Check out files that you have personally saved and get rid of old things, especially photos, videos and other data that takes up a lot of space. Temporary Internet files take up a lot of space because the browser caches each page you visit for faster access at another time. Removing these temporary files can make your computer run more quickly.

Update Software. Both Mac and PC platforms have routine updates that are recommended for the operating system and the programs installed. Some software errors may be remedied by the updating of applications when indicated.

Use Spyware And Virus Protection. Visiting the Internet opens you up to contamination by any virus or spyware software contained on that site and through downloads you may do. Protection products will locate errant files on the hard drive and notify you for deletion.

Back Up Files To External Sources. Having your full photo and video

compilation stored on your computer may be convenient, but what will happen should the hard drive become damaged and data not recoverable? Protecting yourself by keeping backups of important files and information can prove a saving grace should anything happen to the computer down the line.

Inspect Start-Up Items. Certain applications can be designated to launch with start-up, and this can bog down the machine and cause sluggishness. If speed issues are behind the cleanout, consider modifying the number of applications that you have in the start-up menu.

Monitor Activity. There may be something that is hogging your processor or using a lot of RAM. By seeing what is being used on the machine and when, you can make adjustments.

While not every tip will be applicable to your particular situation, it is important to realize that a computer is a machine and it will need maintenance. Also, as technology advances at light speed, it will be necessary to keep up with the proper updates that will enable the computer to work at full capacity.

Care Is A Family A air

The American Dental Association recommends a dental cleaning and examination twice a year.

Start examinations at age 3 to diagnose dental problems in their early stages.

Be sure the dentist performs an oral cancer exam by checking the tongue, cheeks, gums, palate and all soft tissues.

To reduce the risk of oral cancer, limit alcohol consumption and tobacco use.

Digital dental x-rays should be taken to diagnose problems hidden under the gums, including decay, abscesses, cysts and impacted teeth.

How To Freshen Your Fall Décor

Before the holidays bring family celebrations and visiting friends to your home, give your home a new look and improve its comfort level. Check out the suggestions below, make your project list, and then head to the store for the tools and accessories to get the job done.

Entrance, Windows & Floors - Give your entrance an easy update with a new door, or add color and new hardware to your existing one. Install new windows that are attractive, reduce heating and cooling costs, and are easy to maintain. And consider installing a hardwood floor in at least one of your rooms - possibly the entryway and/or the living/family room.

Kitchen & Dining Areas - Apply stain or color to your kitchen cabinets and replace hinges and pulls or knobs to brighten your “home cafe.” If your cabinets have seen better days, install new ones - either store-bought or ones you build. For a wood table and chairs, consider using a stain or topcoat to enhance the wood’s appearance or to match the color of your cabinets.

Shelving & Lighting - Adding shelving anywhere you have unused space (bedroom/bathroom closets) will help control clutter and provide display space for your favorite photos and collectibles in living room, family room and kitchen. Enhance cabinets and furniture with new decorative LED lighting.

Living/Family Room - Arranging furniture into “areas” will allow for varied activities simultaneously, such as conversation and watching events on television or playing games. Use plants, a bookcase or a divider to separate areas. Paint walls, hang pictures or stain wood furniture to add color.

7 Inexpensive Ways To Update Your Home

Oftentimes, buying a home opens up a bottomless pit of opportunities for projects and improvements. While some homeowners engage in different repairs and fix-ups out of necessity, many others like to freshen-up their spaces out of personal preference instead of need. But even the most well-intentioned projects can be waylaid if budgets are tight.

What many homeowners may not realize is that there are many ways to make updates and changes to a home that do not require a major overhaul or a large price tag. The following are seven projects that won’t break the bank:

1. Move around furniture. You may be able to change the look of a room without spending any money. Interior designers know how to arrange furniture for maximum appeal, but the average homeowner can do it, too. Find a focal point in the room and angle the furniture toward it. Don’t make the focal point the television, however. Try changing the placement of chairs and sofas. Simply moving a curio cabinet from one corner to another may also make a difference.

2. Add lighting. Lighting at different levels in the room can create a vibrant impact. Many homeowners mistakenly put in a couple of table lamps and think that will be adequate. However, properly illuminating a room means varying the lighting to create different moods at different times. Plus, more light can make a room feel more welcoming.

3. Add new pillows or drapes. Changing a few aspects of a room can give it an entirely new look. If you want to add a splash of color but don’t know what to do, think about incorporating some new throw pillows or change the curtains. An accessory here and there in a bright color also can incorporate a new hue without it being overwhelming.

4. Change knobs or small accents. Give a room a new look by focusing on the small details. Switch out cabinet knobs for something updated and modern. Take inventory of

wall outlets and light switches and think about selecting new ones that coordinate with your home decor.

5. Use plants. Empty corners or spots you’re not certain how to fill may benefit from a plant. Plants are inexpensive ways to add instant color and visual appeal to a room. Plus, having live plants can help improve indoor air by filtering out contaminants. A home with plants also feels more cozy.

6. Hang new wall art. It may be time to look at your photos and artwork and make a few adjustments. Finding new prints to hang could instantly change a room’s ambience. And you needn’t spend a lot of money on professional photography, either. Grab your camera and take a few close-up shots of flowers or take in a landscape scenery. Many of today’s home printers can produce professional-quality prints in minutes.

7. Try a new coat of paint. After you’ve exhausted other avenues, choosing a new paint color may be the new look you desire. Painting is one of the least expensive yet most dramatic methods of changing a home’s interior. With dozens of hues to choose from, and new apps that enable you to take snapshots of things in nature or in your life and match them up to a paint color, you will have scores of opportunities to explore fresh new colors for your home.

When you get inspired to make improvements to the home but fear how much it may take out of your wallet, consider inexpensive tricks that can induce a big “wow” factor.
