A Fabulous Lakes Region 4th of July

Ask anyone and they will tell you the history of America’s beginnings are in New England. The earliest battles for freedom were fought in this part of the country.

Deep in the heart of New England, in the Lakes Region, celebrating the Fourth of July is a big event and there are many activities for every age and interest.

For a good, old-fashioned parade, head to Laconia for the annual Independence Day Parade held on July 4. The parade gathers and starts at Wyatt Park at 4:30 pm and makes its way through downtown Laconia.

The parade ends at Opechee Park with vendors and activities and live music from 5:30 to 10 pm. A fireworks display ends the day at 10 pm. Call Laconia Parks and Recreation at 524-5046 for updates and information.

Weirs Beach is the place to be on July 3 when fireworks light up the sky at 11:59 pm. Before the fireworks, there is plenty to do in Weirs Beach in the hours leading up to the fireworks.

There are many restaurants and shops and arcades, as well as the wonderful beach. (Fireworks are also on the summer schedule on Friday evenings at 10 pm from July 10 through August 21 with a Labor Day weekend show of fireworks on Sun., September 6 at 10 pm. a busy place on the Fourth of July, starting on July 2 with Studio Two, Beatles Tribute band concert at 6:30 pm in Kelley Park in Bristol. The concert is free and open to the public.

The performance kicks off the summer concert series in Kelley Park, with shows held each Thursday evening.

On July 4, there will be a 5K Firecracker Road Race with registration at 8 am at Kelley Park in Bristol; the race starts at 8:30 am.

The fun continues with a Fourth of July parade in downtown Bristol starting at 10 am with the theme No Place Like Home.

Center Harbor has many Fourth of July activities, beginning with the Annual Center Harbor Foot Race on July 4. The Kids’ Footrace begins with registration at 8 am at Town Hall and the race starting at 9 am; an adult race follows. Please register to participate in the race at www.centerharbornh.org.

At 2 pm on July 4, the annual parade

comes to the downtown Center Harbor area. A free concert at the Center Harbor bandstand begins at 7 pm.

Bring a picnic and a blanket or lawn chairs for an evening of entertainment, culminating with a fireworks display over Center Harbor Bay. On July 4, there will be an Independence Day Parade in Moultonboro. The fun kicks off with the parade beginning at 11 am on Blake Road, continuing through town to Old Route 109 and ending at the Lion’s Club with a complimentary cookout for all participants.

If you like a good book, get in line early for Moultonborough Library’s annual book sale, taking place on July 4 and 5. This is one not to miss! The sale will be held in the library parking lot (right off Rt. 25) from 9 am-5 pm.

Paperbacks and hard covers will be on sale. Call the library at 476-8895 for details.

When it comes to celebrating the Fourth, Meredith offers many fun events. A tasty chicken barbecue will be offered in Hesky Park from 11 am to 2 pm on July 4. A brass band concert will set a festive mood in Hesky Park at 7 pm followed by fireworks over Meredith Bay at dusk. Call 279-6121 for updates.

June 29, 2015 Waterville Valley will celebrate the holiday with a parade at 11 am on July 4. All are welcome to participate by joining spectators, walking in the parade, helping with a float, or entering a float in the parade. A live band will perform at the Gazebo Stage in Town Square from noon to 3 pm. There also will be a family carnival in Town Square from noon to 4 pm. Live entertainment takes place on the gazebo square from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Fireworks end the day in a big way at 9:30 pm over Corcoran’s Pond. Call 236-4695.

Ossipee’s Independence Day celebrations are part of Ossipee Old Home Week. On July 4, the parade lines up at 9 am at Dorrs Corner and Moultonville Road and steps off at 10 am and travels down Main Street to the Town Hall in Center Ossipee; the rain date is July 5.

Also on July 4 from 11 am to 2 pm, a Family Fun Fair takes place at Ossipee Concerned Citizens on Dorr Street in Center Ossipee with a flea market, food, live music and kids’ games. From 10 am to 5 pm, there will be a Pow Wow on July 4 at Mother Earth’s Creation on Rt. 16 in West Ossipee.

The little town of Ashland really knows how to celebrate and they pull out all the stops for the Fourth of July.

Many people say the fireworks display in Ashland is the best anywhere; if you are heading to the area for the display, plan to spend the weekend in town for some great holiday events.

Fun for the Whole Family at Gunstock Mountain

By Sarah Wright Gunstock Mountain Resort has always been a great place to go camping, hiking, and fishing, but the resort is bursting with many other fun options, too. From zip lining to Segway tours, there’s something for everyone. Take the family there for a day and add some exciting memories to your summer.

Speaking of zip lining, New Hampshire magazine recently named Gunstock the “Zip Line Winner” in its Best of NH awards. Travel over one and a half miles on the longest zip line tour in the continental United States. You can reach speeds of up to 70 miles per hour, or control your speed and stop to enjoy the spectacular views. The experienced guides will teach you how to use the equipment. Anyone age 10 and up can participate. Tours run every half hour from 9 am until 4 pm.

If you love a challenge, you can register for an Aerial Treetop Adventure.

Eight obstacle courses are suspended in the tree tops with features like log ladders, bridges, seesaws, and zip lines. There is a course for adults, and one just for kids, so the whole family can get a fun work out. Participants can go through the course on the half hour from 9 am until 4 pm.

For those in your family who are 14 years of age or older, explore the trails of Gunstock on board an OffRoad Segway X2. A Segway is a twowheeled, self-balancing transporter.

Move the frame left or right to turn,

or lean slightly forward or backward to move in those directions. Tours are offered on the hour from 9 am to 3 pm and helmets are provided.

Sit back and relax on a 15-minute scenic lift ride to the summit of Gunstock Mountain. At the top, you can marvel at the amazing view of Lake Winnipesaukee, Mount Washington, and the Presidential mountain ranges.

Choose to wander the hiking trails, or bring a picnic lunch and just enjoy the scenery. The lift operates daily through the summer monthss. Tickets are available in the Mountainside Outfitters Store, at the Welcome Center, or at the Adventure Center. Children five and under ride for free.

Enter the Discover Zone and experience even more. You can launch yourself off the Big Air Bag Ramp, challenge yourself with the Spider Climber, bounce on the Bungee Jumper, defeat

the Climbing Wall, check your balance at the Slackline Park, or take a ride in a kayak or paddle boat. On a hot day, kids will love the Water Wars contraption. Shoot water balloons at each other with the slingshot-like device, or aim them at a target to release a wave of water.

New to the Discover Zone this summer is a 300-foot, summer tubing run, and the Stunt Jump, where you can act like a Hollywood stunt performer anjump from a 12- or 20-foot platform into the Zero Shock Stunt Bag. If you’d like to go for a family bike ride, you can rent BMX bikes, mountain bikes, or cruiser bikes. Purchase a Discover Pass and enjoy all of these activities, including the scenic lift ride, for one low price. The Discover Zone is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm.

It’s going to be an exciting day that you’ll want to remember. Relive your

experience again and again by renting a Go Pro camera and record your adventure on HD video. Each rental includes a 16 GB SD card, so that you can take the footage home with you.

Having fun sure works up an appetite. Luckily, there’s The Landing Zone restaurant, located on Gunstock’s new patio at the end of the main lodge.

You can take in the mountain scenery while enjoying some delicious dishes.

Start with an appetizer like fried wings or spinach dip, or enjoy a fresh salad plate. Order an Angus beef burger with pub fries, chicken bacon ranch sliders, fried haddock, fish tacos, or an all-beef Sabrette hot dog. The restaurant also serves Gifford’s ice cream and Elis draft root beer.

Sign your kids up for Extreme Kids Field Day on Sat., July 25. This is a new event for kids ages 4 to 14 to get outside and experience friendly competition on a fun and safe obstacle course where the focus is on finishing instead of winning. Gorka at Great Waters Music Festival On Fri., July 3 at 7:30 pm, Great Waters Music Festival will present John Gorka, along with Cliff Eberhardt, at Anderson Hall in Wolfeboro.

A singer/songwriter famed for his rich, expressive baritone, NJ native John Gorka was one of the leading lights of the new folk movement.

Gorka began his career while attending college in Pennsylvania in the early 1980s, appearing at open-mike nights at a local coffeehouse before eventually forming his own group, the Razzy Dazzy Spasm Band. Soon he hit the road, performing up and down the Eastern Seaboard before finally settling in Texas and winning the Kerrville Folk Festival’s prestigious New Folk Award in 1984.

In 1991, Rolling Stone magazine called him “the preeminent male singer-songwriter of what has been dubbed the New Folk Movement.”

Many well-known artists have recorded and/or performed John Gorka songs, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Mary Black and Maura O’Connell. John has graced the stage of Austin City Limits, Mountain Stage, etown and has appeared on CNN. His new song Where No Monuments Stand is featured in the upcoming documentary Every War Has Two Losers, about activist and Oregon

Poet Laureate William Stafford (19141993).

Performing with John will be Cliff Eberhardt. Long one of the most respected songwriters on the club scene, his peers often mine his catalog for themselves. Cliff’s song Memphis was included on Cry Cry Cry, an album of collaborative covers by the “folk supergroup” of the same name (comprised of Dar Williams, Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell).

Other performers who have recorded his songs include Richie Havens, Shawn Colvin, Russ Taff and Buffy Sainte Marie. A collection of his songs has been published in The Cliff Eberhardt Songbook (Cherry Lane Publishing).

Local organizations Global Awareness Local Action (G.A.L.A.) and Jack Mountain Bushcraft School announce the next feature in their monthly NH Re-skillience Workshop Series of hands-on workshops focusing on homesteading, sustainable living, and traditional bushcraft skills. Workshops are designed to help participants develop skills and knowledge that strengthen personal and community resilience.

The next workshop, Fly Fishing Basics with Tim Smith and Tom Belluscio, takes place on Wed., July 1 from 6 to 8 pm at Sumner Brook Herbals & Fish Farm in Ossipee.

Fly fishing is an angling method in which an artificial “fly” is used to catch fish. The fly is casted using a fly rod, reel, and specialized weighted line. Casting a nearly weightless fly or “lure” requires casting techniques significantly different from other forms of casting. Fly fishermen use hand tied flies that resemble natural invertebrates, other food organisms, or “lures” to provoke the fish to strike.

The main difference between fly fishing and spin or bait fishing is that in fly fishing the weight of the line carries the hook through the air, whereas in spin and bait fishing the weight of the lure or sinker at the end of the monofilament or braided line gives casting distance. Flies can be made either to float or sink, and range in size from a few millimeters to 30 cm long, though most are between 1 and 5 cm. Fly fishing can be done in fresh or salt water. Techniques differ with habitat such as lakes and ponds, small streams, large rivers, bays and estuaries, and open ocean.

Fly fishing is a fun way to spend time on the water, and can be a great way to catch fish! Participants should bring their fly fishing gear, although there will be an extra rod or two for people to try if they do not have their own. The workshop will cover the basics of what gear you need to get started, casting (four-part cast, roll cast), knots, the different types of flies, and how to find fish.

The emphasis for this workshop is on getting out and having fun, regardless of your level of experience. The program is geared toward novice and intermediate fly fishers, and will give you the skill and confidence to get out on the water.

Sumner Brook Fish Farm, where the workshop will take place, is a private trout farm in Ossipee that raises Brown, Brook and Rainbow trout.

Sumner Brook Fish Farm has been a family owned and operated trout hatchery since 1987. Their fish are stocked for many derbys and clubs throughout NH. They are open year round offering trout fishing on site from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Workshop participants will get a chance to practice catch and release with the option to bring a freshly caught fish home at an additional fee should they choose.

The cost for the workshop is $15.00.

A Scientific (and fun) Adventure Story and Photos

It’s been a long time since I visited the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness. There was a time, when my kids were young, that we spent many summer hours at the wonderful Science Center. We went for the summer children’s nature and science camps and we went “just because” on hot or even rainy days during June, July and August to walk the trail and see the live animals including fox, mountain lions and deer, to name but a few of the animals that called the Center home.

My kids are all grown up now, and they don’t get home very often. So when my daughter Megan was recently home for a few days, we wanted to take advantage of the nice June weather by getting outside.

I tentatively suggested the Science Center, and expected her to reject my idea, saying she was too old. But she agreed readily to make it our destination for the day, saying, “It’s been a long time since we went there and I think it would be fun!”

Downtown Holderness was bustling with early-season boaters and tourists.

We took a right-hand turn down Rt. 113 and followed signs on the left for Science Center parking.

The parking lot was just about full on the early summer’s day and many excited children were making their way with their parents to the Welcome Center. The gift shop is located in this attractive building, but we opted to visit the shop on our way out. It was a sunny early afternoon and we were eager to take to the trail.

Not far from the Welcome Center is the Wood Energy exhibit, which shows how we produce heat for energy and how much we use and the impact on the environment.

Next up was the Mead Discovery Place Introductory Exhibit. This building was once the entrance building when my kids were little, but it has found new life as a sort of stepping off point to teach about the natural world

Four concepts are reinforced throughout the Gephart Exhibit Trail: Habitat, Interrelationships, Adaptations and Populations. The Mead Discovery exhibits focus on natural themes and also on themes not explored on the Gephart Exhibit Trail, such as awareness about water. Interactive exhibits invite visitors to use thinking skills and ask only that everyone be willing to learn and participate, We moved through the exhibit, which we both found fascinating and then it was on to the Life Underground area.

Although I cannot say ants and other underground creatures are among my favorites, Megan and I both enjoyed the displays and exhibits. We learned about ants and earthworms and Megan recalled the fun days past when, as a child, she climbed in the human-size chipmunk burrow and slid down a mini slide at the finish.

We were admittedly eager to see the live animal exhibits and first up was the animal area featuring Coyotes. A

wooden open air building held exhibits and information about fascinating coyotes, cousins to dogs, wolves and foxes. (If you didn’t know it, you will learn that coyotes were first seen in NH in the 1940s and are now common throughout the state.) Also in the exhibit is a live coyote in a fenced, natural area. It was right after lunch when we toured and the coyote was taking a midday nap.

The Ecotone Mammal Exhibit was next and it taught about the interrelationships of creatures living in the ecotone or the edge between two natural communities. The exhibit shows animals that depend upon the ecotone areas, such as red fox, skunk and gray fox.

Red fox were also napping in their enclosed, fenced area; they are beautiful animals, even in sleep, with rusty red, thick coats.

Who wouldn’t be excited to see a real, live bobcat? It never ceases to amaze and thrill me to be so near these majestic animals that rather resemble big house cats. There were three bobcats in the live animal exhibit area and they were indeed cat-like animals;

Back on the trail, we stopped at the Gordon Children’s Center where all sorts of climb-through tunnels for young ones offer educatonal opportunities. Megan commented that she always loved the center and learned a lot by reading all the exhibits when she was a child.

As we walked by the Gordon Children’s Center, we noticed a group of carpenters hard at work on a fascinating new area which will be open soon. Kids will surely love the Gordon Interactive Playscape area, which is scheduled to open on July 1.

The intricately designed playground will teach children about the concept of prey and predator by having them simulate the obstacles faced by a red squirrel. The Playscape includes many fun features, aimed to stimulate children’s minds and imaginations.

Next up on our walk was the Black Bear live animal exhibit. We entered the large building where all sorts of information on the black bear can be found. There was a display with bear

two were sunning themselves and a third was pacing not far from them.

I think everyone was enthralled with the next exhibit, the mountain lion area. The two resident mountain lions were lazing in a rock outcropping and just to look at their stealth-like bodies was a thrill.

We also saw the white-tailed deer exhibit with a large area for the resident deer to roam and graze. In an exhibit building we learned a great deal about deer and even about deer ticks and how to spot them and deal with these pests.

The river otter exhibit has also been among our favorite areas for years. The two clever and lively otters dart and dive in and out of the water and can be seen through a huge glass viewing window. It is a great place to watch the otters’ daily activities and there is even a slide for children to enjoy.

We veered off the path a bit to visit Kirkwood Gardens, a part of the Science Center that is open for visitors.

The gardens were blooming with all kinds of flowers the day we visited and the area has a large lawn and seating for visitors to relax amid the natural splendor of the garden.

The raptor exhibit area features a group of birds that catch, kill, and eat other animals (prey) using sharp talons and a sharp hooked beak. The birds are in glassed exhibit areas. I have always found them among the most awe inspiring creatues at the Science Center.

The exhibit highlights adaptations unique to raptors and demonstrates interrelationships between raptors and other living things.

Not far from the raptor area, the Wetlands Walk takes visitors across a small, man-made wetland and a wet meadow and small stream. The boardwalk feels as if it is floating when one walks over the water area. Kids like to watch for frogs, turtles and other living creatures in the wetlands area.

The Geology Exhibit was great fun.

The exhibit highlights the geological timetable of the earth and shows

fur so visitors can touch and feel what black bear fur is like (pretty coarse, I thought!). What do black bears eat?

Just about anything they can get their paws on, it seems.

We walked up a flight of stairs to a great viewing area that looks down upon the bear’s living quarters. Here, two black bears live in a huge natural area with rocks, trees, and water and just about anything a black bear might want or need. The idea that children can view these majestic bears from a safe distance is wonderful.

We walked a short distance from the bear exhibit to the Celebrate Birds building where all sorts of fun displays and games (who could resist the wooden “pinball” game that invites players to dodge some of the hazards a migrating bird would face?) teach about birds.

different rocks from NH. A time travel walk teaches about rock formation on the earth over the thousands of years.

We ended our trip to the Science Center with a visit to the gift shop, but on our way there we noticed a very large group of picnic tables, cleverly set up in a pretty spot, some under a pavilion area to allow visitors to eat or rest at a table under cover of sun or rain. People of all ages were enjoying picnic lunches at the spot and taking in the afternoon sunshine.

After we left the Center, the day was just too sunny and warm to head home, so we continued on Rt. 3 toward Ashland and took a right onto Route 175, which is a rural route to reach Plymouth.

With no real goal in mind, we traveled the Tenney Mountain Highway until we saw a right hand turn sign for Quincy Bog. “Let’s go!” Megan offered. Not one to miss an adventure, I agreed and soon we were headed down Smith Bridge Road.

We followed signs to Quincy Bog, which is located at 131 Quincy Bog Road in Rumney. (You indeed must follow the signs to the Bog area; otherwise you probably won’t find it because it is tucked away at the end of a neighborhood.)

We parked in a large lot and found the trail map kiosk and booklet provided for visitors titled The Joe Kent Trail at Quincy Bog to be helpful.

The area is wooded with a short path to the start of the bog area. We took the wooden boardwalk for a short distance until we realized the afternoon hour was getting later than we thought and we reluctantly turned back to get to an early evening dinner in the Newfound Lake area.

The bog boardwalk trail was very pretty, and the views of the pond with Mt. Stinson in the background were beautiful. Plant life was abundant as well as birds and most likely, other animals.

Before leaving, we stopped to chat with a woman seated on a bench who was enjoying the view and the warm day. She told us the boardwalk trail goes all the way around the pond and is well worth the trek.

We took Quincy Road into Rumney, and because we had just a little time left, we decided to take a right hand turn in the village to the Mary Baker Eddy Historic House on Stinson Lake Road in Rumney.

We were in luck the day we stopped by, because a docent was on site at the tiny, charming home once the residence of famed religious leader, Mary Baker Eddy. The docent took time to show us the parlor and two upstairs bedrooms reached by the narrowest flight of stairs I have ever seen!

We didn’t have long to stop, but we got a glimpse at how Mary and her husband lived in the mid 1800s; she was an intelligent woman looking for religious answers and her husband, a dentist, had a practice in the home.

I plan to return to the Mary Baker Eddy House this summer for a longer tour and certainly to the Quincy Bog for a trek around that marvelous pond.

As the afternoon ended, and we met friends for dinner in Bristol, they asked how we’d spent our day. Megan and I looked at each other and smiled, recalling the wonderful Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, the Quincy Bog and the unusual little home of Mary Baker Eddy in a sleepy village.

“Oh, we just went for a drive,” I answered.

That, I can say with certainty, was an understatement.

A 100 Year Anniversary ~ Long Live Kingswood Golf Club!

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Life in the Lakes Region was a lot different in 1915 from what we experience today. One thing was similar: the desire to relax on a fun vacation.

Tourism was gaining in popularity due to the beauty and recreation to be found around Lake Winnipesaukee.

Cottage colonies were springing up and those who could afford it were building summer homes near the lake.

If you were lucky enough to own a summer home on Winnipesaukee, you had a long season of relaxing by the lake and dining and socializing with friends; you might want to indulge in outdoor activities as well.

It was the desire for a place where friends could meet, socialize and play the enjoyable game of golf that was the impetus behind Kingswood Golf Club in Wolfeboro. This year is the 100th anniversary of the club and it is a fascinating story.

No one knows the story as well as Joy Sweeney, a local resident who plays golf at the club almost every day. If you play golf at Kingswood, you likely have seen or know Joy. She has been playing golf since she was about seven years of age and she is pretty darn good at the game.

Laughing, she says, “Well, I had a good teacher!”

She is referring to her grandfather, Frank Butler, the club’s first golf pro, hired when the course was new. Frank was the club’s original pro, and also served as grounds superintendent and club administrator. He was the backbone of the club for an amazing 49 years, and he spent summers in Wolfeboro with his wife Katie and his daughter, Helen. Frank and Katie’s daughter grew up spending carefree days on the golf course and eventually married and had a daughter, Joyce (or Joy as she is fondly nicknamed).

In retelling the story of Kingswood Golf Club, Joy stresses that people need to know not only the history of the club, but also that it is an active community place for all to enjoy.

Celebrating a 100th anniversary is quite an achievement, Joy is aware. “There has been a lot of hard work by board members. The Kingswood Golf Club

Indeed, the club offers a lot to people of all ages; long gone are the days when golf was a rich man’s sport for a select few. Today Kingswood Golf Club offers leagues and classes for all ages from children to adults. Both men and women play on the beautiful course and surely Joy’s grandfather would be impressed and proud if he could see how the club has grown over the years.

The club offers Men’s Play Night and Ladies’ Play Nights as well as lessons for men and women. There also are Ladies and Men’s Twilight Leagues and private lessons. A junior program with summer camp for children is also offered.

Joy grew up in Wolfeboro and golf has always been part of her life.

She spent summers staying with her grandparents at the club and did little jobs to make extra money. Smiling when recalling her family’s long history at the golf club, she said, “My mom and dad actually met on the golf course at Kingswood.”

Although Joy and the family worked at the club, it was an exclusive place when she was a child. It was selective when it first opened but over time grew to include a lot of different people, among them many locals as well as summer people.

When she was a child, Joy recalls after the golf games were done for the day, if it was still light outside, Frank would give her a golf lesson. “It was a big treat to have a lesson with him,” Joy says. “He was a gentle, patient teacher. It was a wonderful life here; I was very lucky.”

taught Joy well; she won the Ladies League championship at the club at just age 16.

Joy recalls many lively events at the club about 25 years ago, such as lobster bakes and dancing to live bands. “If we had a lobster bake, we’d ask the members to bring hors d’ouevres or a dessert. Everyone was involved.”

Over the years, the course has expanded, along with the club building and offices. When one drives on South

Main Street there is no missing the gorgeous green course where golfers can be seen enjoying the game.

Historically, the club started as a purely social organization for the benefit of Wolfeboro summer residents, their families and guests. Sewall Abbott, a Wolfeboro attorney, represented 15 summer residents as the original

After the clubhouse burned, a large summer home on Lake Winnipesaukee in downtown Wolfeboro was purchased as the next clubhouse. The golf course was being constructed behind the Windrifter on South Main Street at that time.

On July 15, 1915, the new Kingswood Golf Club opened; in July of 1916, Frank Butler was hired as the first golf professional. Although golf was mostly a man’s sport, women were taking an “unusual interest in golf and some of them are becoming very expert at the game” according to an article in the Granite State News. In 1917, ladies began to play and compete at Kingswood.

The next clubhouse was at Pinkham’s chicken coop behind the Windrifter and many obvious improvements were made. The club leased the space and it was eventually purchased and moved to its present location in 1918. The Butlers were important to the success

of the club and an apartment for the family was added along with a pro shop. A dance hall was added in 1921 and dances became quite popular.

Joy recalls that even when she was a child, the gardens around the club were beautiful and everything was well groomed.

The club made its professional debut when Frank Butler defeated Mike Brady on the Kingswood course (Brady was the runner up in the National Open won by Walter Hagan).

Over the years, more land was added, which increased the size of the course.

Unfortunately, things changed when the stock market crashed in 1929. Finances were touch-and-go for some time, but eventually things improved.

When World War II began, the country experienced tough times and Kingswood Golf Club was not spared.

Gas rationing meant vacationers could not get to Wolfeboro for their beloved summer holidays. Young men who had served as caddies were enlisted and fighting in the war. Because it was necessary to cut back on costs, some of the holes were closed and Kingswood became a 14-hole course.

In the late 1950s, the front nine’s restoration began. By the 1960s, the club was attended by many locals as well as summer residents; exclusivity had long since ended.

The Kingswood Golf Club today is authorized to continue to manage and operate a golf course for the benefit of the community to which the course is welcomed. This means, in simple terms, that the club is open to the public.

The course is one of which everyone can be proud and Joy points out that Kingswood was included in a Donald Ross Golf Courses You Can Play book, which is indeed a prestigious accomplishment.

Frank Butler retired in 1963 after many long years of service. Frank and Katie were honored; the couple was more than employees and everyone realized the golf club would not have come as far or been as successful without the dynamic Butlers. (Katie was vital to the operation of the club.)

These days Joy plays golf “unless it rains” on the course she could probably walk with her eyes closed. She is part of a group of women that play golf in the late morning and end by mid afternoon.

When asked if she’s still a good player, Joy laughs and shrugs. “I’m ok I guess,” she says modestly.

It is clear the game is more about being in a place she has loved all her life, among people who know her well, than winning or losing at golf.

Perhaps that is the secret to the longevity of Kingswood Golf Club that Frank Butler instilled all those years ago; the club’s ability to welcome all and offer a place to get together, to share memories and to ensure that the future of the club will remain strong and positive.

A Chat With Mrs. Libby

When Doctor Henry Libby opened the Libby Museum on Rt. 109 in Wolfeboro in 1912, he realized a dream of exhibiting and sharing items garnered from years of collecting odd and interesting items. It had taken a lot of work to create the museum, and he knew it would not have happened but for the support and aid of his wife, Hattie.

Mrs. (Hattie) Libby was the quiet force behind the man and an equal partner in Henry’s love of collecting and exploring the natural world.

She was an educated woman, and her family, the Hornes, was among Wolfeboro’s most respected residents.

This summer, Mrs. Libby will be honored in a special way when the museum offers three days of Walk and Talk with Mrs. Libby. Sheryll Ross, codirector of the Libby Museum, will be dressed in Edwardian period clothing as the real Mrs. Libby (who lived from the 1850s until the 1930s) would have

special insights into exhibits at the Libby Museum; who would know the museum better, after all, than the wife of its founder?

The Laker stopped by to chat with “Mrs. Libby” on a June day as she watched the installation of a huge moose, a new exhibit in the Libby Museum, being installed. Dressed in a long brown flower-patterned dress with lace collar and white lace gloves and her hair in a Gibson girl bun, Mrs. Libby’s outfit was completed with “granny” glasses perched on her nose.

The Laker: We know you are busy today, so we won’t take up too much of your valuable time.

Mrs. Libby: (Laughing) “Oh goodness, I would be happy to speak with you! As you can see, the staff is installing a new exhibit item, the huge moose. If my husband could see it, he would be so excited. He loved nature,

you know, and this big moose would be something he would be excited to add to the collection.”

The Laker: How did you meet your husband?

Mrs. Libby: “We are both from the Wolfeboro area. Dr. Libby was born in 1850 in the Tuftonboro area and I am from Wolfeboro. I taught Latin at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro.

Henry, or Dr. Libby as you would call him, was a bit younger than me. We met after he moved back to Wolfeboro from Boston due to illness.”

The Laker: You seem to be quite proud of Dr. Libby. What is his background?

Mrs. Libby: “Henry was a true Renaissance man! He was a poet and a sculptor and he worked as an artist in Boston for a time, but when he realized he wouldn’t make much of a living as a sculptor, he went to Harvard to study dentistry. He was a member of an Art Nouveau Group of creative people.

After we married, he returned to Boston to complete his studies in dentistry; he became a successful itinerant dentist.

And while he worked as a dentist, he collected, invented, investigated, traveled and always studied nature.”

The Laker: Did you move back to Wolfeboro? Is that how the museum started?

Mrs. Libby: “Yes, we moved here permanently, but we used to summer here before that. Henry had a good dental practice in Boston where we lived for quite some time. Our Wolfeboro home was near the museum.”

The Laker: We hear that Dr. Libby was interested in so many things – can you tell us about that?

Mrs. Libby: “Henry owned Rattlesnake Island and he logged and sold lumber from the island. He bought • Libby Museum Continued on page 25

We traveled all over Europe and even to Australia, and our collections were eclectic to say the least! And people we knew gave us things that only added to the big collection. Our garage and a boat house were full of Henry’s collections!”

The Laker: You must have been a great help in keeping track of all the

things he gathered.

Mrs. Libby: “Oh yes, I like to think I kept him grounded and organized!

He was interested in so many things.

As you will see when you walk around the museum, he studied skeletons of all sorts of animals and he also studied insects and snakes and goodness knows what else!”

• Libby Museum Continued from page 25 remember…he was 62. By then we were living full time in our Wolfeboro home. I should mention that he personally designed the museum in Greek Revival/Romanesque style and wanted it to be one large room. It had a natural air conditioning system unique in its day. It was important to him that the museum not charge admission and it never did when he was alive.”

The Laker: What did you and Dr. Libby do for entertainment when you lived in Wolfeboro? That would have been in the early 1900s until the 1930s.

Mrs. Libby: “Oh we had a lot of fun! We went boating; there are some charming photographs in the museum of us boating on the lake. And we always had people visiting us. Henry was so involved in the arts and politics and science, and it seemed we had a never-ending stream of summer visitors. Grover Cleveland came to see the museum when it opened and President Coolidge was here. Also, although I can’t exactly recall, I think Thoreau, Robert Frost and Whittier, because of their connections to the arts, came here as well. And you might be interested to know Lizzie Borden visited the museum with a friend after the building opened!”

The Laker: Can you describe what is in the museum?

Mrs. Libby: “You really need to see it to appreciate all we have at the Libby Museum. Perhaps among my husband’s favorite items in the museum is the Cootie insect, which was brought here in a letter from the World War I

battlefield. That bug was so popular; we had people coming from all over to see it!

“The gypsum plaques in the display cases were created by Dr. Libby and either he or I lettered the plaques with information on each item that was displayed. We were devoted to one another and there is a charming little thing he did to declare his devotion to me. If you look at some of the plaques, you will see a tiny symbol on one corner of two blossoms joined together – he said the blossoms were like Henry and Hattie joined forever.

“You will see all sorts of eclectic things in the displays, such as the Ibis mummy and case of a sand bird from Egypt. It was acquired in 1913. There are hairballs from cow stomachs, if you can imagine that! And a collection of pipes from the old Taber Pipe Factory that operated in South Wolfeboro. Of course, there are all sorts of dental items

and displays of local fish. Under a glass case is a huge Indian dugout canoe that was found in the lake in 1955. How my Henry would have loved knowing that canoe found a permanent home in his museum. Those are just a few of the many things on display.”

The Laker: You were devoted to one another and he was an artist as well as a scientist, so I can assume he was progressive in his thinking about social issues as well?

Mrs. Libby: “Well, when it came to the right for women to vote, he was against it. I did not agree, but I understood his opinion. He once said, ‘Do you find equal rights displayed in any lower form of life between the sexes?’ He studied it and that was his opinion. But on most things, we were very compatible and he said I inspired him.”

The Laker: From photos we have seen of each of you in your youth, you

were certainly pretty and he was quite handsome. You must have created quite a stir wherever you went.

Mrs. Libby: “We were compatible because we were both nature lovers.

And I kept him organized because with all he collected and studied, it got to be a bit overwhelming!”

The Laker: What will you be doing at the museum this summer?

Mrs. Libby: “We thought it would be nice for visitors to have the chance to tour the museum with me, and on three separate days this summer, I will be here, dressed in the clothing of my time period, the Edwardian era, leading tours. I will be here on July 9 and 30 and on August 6. Tours will be offered on those days at 11 am and 2 pm. I have personal stories about Dr. Libby and I am eager to share our many museum collections with visitors.”

The Laker: Is there anything else you would like to mention?

Mrs. Libby: “I want people to know Henry’s wish was that the museum be a place where everyone could come and that children especially should feel welcome. Our son, Arthur, was also a dentist; we were so proud of him. And after him, other family members ran the museum. Now the town of Wolfeboro owns it and it is run by the Friends of the Libby Museum. They charge a very modest admission fee and they offer a lot of programs for all ages during the summer. You can find out more by visiting www.wolfeboronh.us or call the museum at 569-1035. Sawyer’s is an icon in the Lakes Region and a long-time tradition for local families who have, over the past 70 years, brought their children, grandchildren, and now even their great-grandchildren to enjoy the food and ice cream.

Owners Larry and Pati Litchfield purchased the restaurant nine years ago. They are owners/managers and involved in the business full time. “Sawyer’s is very much the same as it was 70 years ago. We’ve only made subtle improvements and changes since we assumed ownership,” says Larry.

When my kids and I were there on Saturday, they chose Chocolate Chip and I tried the Cookie Monster ice cream. Mine was blue, of course, with Oreos, chocolate chips, and graham crackers. It was delicious. The kids both commented on the generous portions and the more than adequate number of chocolate chunks in their cups.

I’m looking forward to my next visit and maybe Fudge Walnut, or Moon Drop, a vanilla ice cream with marshmallow swirl and chocolate truffle pieces.

Pati and her valued assistant make all of the ice cream right there. There are now over 50 flavors to choose from, including a few frozen yogurts, too.

“Hands down, the most popular flavor is Black Raspberry,” says Larry, “and then Vanilla.” Larry also recommends this year’s newest flavor, Banana Split.

The Frappes are a special treat and come in a variety of flavors. You can select your own unique preference of ice creams and flavorings.

Of course, I have to mention the rest of the food available at Sawyer’s. Gordon Interactive Playscape: A new exhibit with kids in mind On July 1, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness will open the new Gordon Interactive Playscape, an intricately designed playground where children can play and learn. The new exhibit teaches children about the concept of prey and predator, by having them simulate the obstacles faced by a red squirrel.

The Playscape includes many fun features, aimed to stimulate children’s minds and imaginations. For instance, kids can use a rope swing to mimic a squirrel jumping to a bird feeder, where they ring a bell to signify their arrival.

A series of platforms challenges kids to maintain their balance, as if they are squirrels moving through the forest canopy. A bird’s nest overlooking the exhibit provides an impressive sight and includes a thirteen-foot slide so children can land back on the ground and begin their adventures again.

Naturalist Eric D’Aleo and Facilities Supervisor Dean Smith designed the Gordon Interactive Playscape. They were inspired largely by the designs of Ku Kuk, a German company that

D’Aleo and Smith have put a great deal of effort into creating the Playscape, including, but not limited to, hours of research, numerous meetings with the

education exhibit team to present, discard, and/or modify ideas, CAD and hand-drawn renderings of the design, and construction.

D’Aleo and Smith hope for kids to have fun while being active and mov-

ing outside. Children get to crawl, climb, dig, and slide, while they imagine what it’s like to be a red squirrel.

They also hope visitors will gain a new understanding of the predator-prey relationship.

“When [having] fun, a person is engaged and excited by the experience, which provides an opportunity for learning and understanding,” said D’Aleo. “It’s one thing to read about predators and prey; it’s another thing when you have a chance to role-play the experience.”

Generous donors to the Nature Matters Capital Campaign funded this new addition to Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. The Science Center’s dedicated board of trustees organized the campaign. It has funded the Gordon Interactive Playscape, the Wood Energy Exhibit completed in 2014, the Water Matters Pavilion opening in 2016, and a new raptor mews soon to be under construction.

Wolfeboro Community Bandstand Concert Series Features Favorites The 2015 Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand free Saturday night concert series returns to Cate Park with a number of favorite bands from years past.

The summer series will kick off with local favorite Annie and the Orphans in the bandstand on Sat., July 11. Annie and the Orphans are wellknown throughout the region for their classic rock and roll sounds and have been playing to crowds throughout the Lakes Region for more than 50 years.

On July 18, the concert will take a more modern turn, as a capella band Tuckerman’s at 9 hits the bandstand stage. The band returns with its unique a capella sounds, created entirely by the voices of the members.

The Bel Airs will be next up in the weekly concert series on July 25, featuring a doo wop sound that is wellknown around New England. The band has won numerous awards in NH for its quality work and they will be back on the bandstand after being part of the concert series last year and also after many First Night performances.

The fourth concert in the weekly series will take the audience back to the 1960s. 60s Invasion started building its repertoire from The Beatles, but has expanded its catalog to include a wide variety of other bands and feature music from throughout the decade of the 1960s. The 60s Invasion concert will take place on Sat., Aug. 1.

The Freese Brothers Big Band will return to the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand on Sat., Aug. 8. The all-

volunteer band is made up of members from throughout central and southern NH and includes people from many diverse backgrounds. The group plays a wide mix of music, including Big Band and swing classics, as well as modern pieces.

The Mary Maguire Band made its debut in the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand concert series last year and will return this year on Aug. 15. The band has performed all over the Northeast and earned raves for its performances from numerous locales. The band weaves American

roots of swing, folk and country into the performance.

The Strafford Wind Symphony has been away from the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand for a while, but returns to the stage on Aug. 22, featuring patriotic numbers and traditional wind ensemble music. The band includes

musicians from all walks of life from throughout the Seacoast of NH, Maine and Massachusetts.

The Moose Mountain Jazz Band is one of the most popular bands to take to the bandstand each summer. The group has been delighting audiences around the Lakes Region since 2001 with its Dixieland Jazz sound. The band will return to the bandstand after a year away, performing on Sat., Aug. 29.

The Carolyn Ramsay Band made its bandstand debut last summer and will be the final act in the concert series for the second year in a row. The band’s roots are in rock and folk music, but they bring a unique sound to favorite music and also mix in original pieces along the way. The final concert is set for Sat., Sept. 5.

The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand present the concert series every Saturday night during the summer, weather permitting. If bad weather is expected, the concerts will be cancelled and a sign will be posted at the entrance to Cate Park. The concerts start at 7 pm and run for two hours, with a short intermission. While the concerts are free, donations are accepted to help the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand bring quality acts to the bandstand every summer.

Curling is Coming!

If you’ve admired and enjoyed watching the graceful Olympic sport of curling, you’ll soon have a chance to try it out.

Curling is rapidly growing in popularity in New Hampshire, and the newly formed Lakes Region Curling Association (LRCA) is holding an informational session on Wed., July 8, at the Wolfeboro Public Library in preparation for a 10-week curling league that will start in October at Pop Whalen Arena in Wolfeboro.

LRCA curling experiences are designed for participants of all ages, for men and women, and for people of varied abilities.

The July 8 session starts at 7 pm and will offer an overview of the game of curling, with a display of some of the equipment used in game play, and information about how the local fall league will operate. Members of the public from throughout the Lakes Region are encouraged to attend, hear organizers discuss the upcoming program, and ask questions about the sport.

Participants in the LRCA’s fall league will be free to organize their own teams of four to six members (game play will allow for members to rotate into a

game), but organizers will also create teams for individuals who do not have one already formed.

A game of curling consists of two four-member teams, with each team “throwing” (that is, sliding) eight polished granite stones toward a bulls-eye target known as the house. A game consists of six to 10 “ends,” during which players on the two teams alternately throw two stones apiece.

Points are allocated to the team whose stones come to rest closest to the center of the house. A team is allowed to hit the opposing team’s stones in order to move them away from the center of the house. Consequently, curling, which has been described as “chess on ice,” is a game of strategy as well as dexterity.

Started in Scotland in Medieval times, curling came to the United States and Canada with Scottish immigrants in the 19th century. While it has been popular in Canada for decades, the game started to explode in popularity in the US after the last winter Olympics.

Willowbrook Village Opens July 1 Nineteenth-century Willowbrook Village, located at 70 Elm St. in Newfield, Maine, opens for its 46th season on July 1 from 10 am to 5 pm.

Children accompanied by parents or grandparents are free on this day. There will be many special presentations for the opening.

Willowbrook’s July Fourth Weekend will be filled with all types of hands on workshops, music and games in addition to a Revolutionary War camp re-enactment.

The Lakes Region Conservation Trust (LRCT) kicks off its 2015 Guided Excursion Programs with a hike at the Red Hill Conservation Area in Moultonborough on July 9. John Oliver, lead guide and Property Adopter for the 2,650 acre Red Hill Conservation Area, will take participants to the Cook and Horn settlement sites, giving them the opportunity to learn about these historic locations, identify signs of wildlife in this habitat-rich environment, and explore a beautiful part of this conserved landscape along the way.

The Lakes Region Conservation Trust will be offering many guided excursions throughout the season, including an Orienteering/GPS course at Center Harbor Woods, hikes at the Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area in Moultonborough, Knights Pond in Alton, Piper Mountain in Gilford, and the newly acquired Sugarloaf Ridge in Alexandria. LRCT will also offer the very popular mushroom walk

with Rick Van de Poll at Fogg Hill in Center Harbor as well as paddles on Lake Winnipesaukee, Squam Lake, and Lake Wicwas. These excursions provide a great opportunity to learn about and explore LRCT’s conserved lands with knowledgeable guides. All LRCT guided excursions are free to all, but registration is required.

Donations Needed for Methodist Church Auction Auctioneer Jerry Love will take the gavel to open the 18th Annual Charity Auction at the First United Methodist Church in Gilford, on Wed., July 29 at 6:30 pm. The church is currently seeking your help to provide some great items for this event.

While the church is able to finance their ministry through the congregation, an auction is held each year to raise funds to continue to keep the building available for the many groups and functions that are not directly related to the ministry of the church.

Girl and Boy Scouts, Streetcar Company, Carter Mountain Brass Band, and Lakes Region Singers use the building for meetings and rehearsals. Health seminars are available in the church, as well as Red Cross Blood drives, Life Line Screenings, and other health related programs. Bible studies are open to all and Alcoholics Anonymous hold weekly meetings at the church as well.

The congregation supports community groups through mission volunteers and the doors are open to help with other community missions including Common Pantry drop offs, Habitat for Humanity, the Free Christmas Dinner and community health resource groups.

Help is needed to make the auction a success again this year. Businesses are asked to consider donating a gift certificate. If you have a good, used item you would like to donate (sorry, no electronics), it is welcome. There will be a live auction, silent auction and quick sale. Doors open at 5:30 pm for viewing, and the live auction starts at 6:30 pm. New Hampshire Boat Museum To Auction Jules Olitski Print of Stamp Act Island The New Hampshire Boat Museum’s 2015 season exhibit, Pilgrimage to Simplicity: Lake Wentworth Traditions and History features information about the famous people who once lived on Wolfeboro’s Lake Wentworth. Among the best known was world renowned artist, Jules Olitski (1922-2007) who summered on Sister Island on Lake Wentworth from 1956-1973 and then for the remainder of his life on Bear Island on Lake Winnipesaukee.

Olitski received international recognition for his works of abstract art, receiving multiple awards. His work is widely exhibited in museums around the world. In 1969 he was the first living American artist to have a oneperson exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

For several summers he rented a cottage on Stamp Act Island that he used as a painting studio. His massive work, Tin Lizzie Green, measuring 130 in. by 82 in. is in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. This monumental painting was created on Stamp Act Island.

In 1963, Olitski painted a smaller work, 22 in. by 28 in., and titled it for the island, calling it Stamp Act. A print of this work, reproduced on all cotton rag watercolor paper, mounted on museum mat board, and framed

in clear finished maple, with a value of $500, is being offered in a silent auction at the New Hampshire Boat Museum. Bidding for the print starts at $80. The opportunity to bid will continue through the summer, ending May on September 7. To place a bid, visit the Museum where the work is on display or call the Museum staff at 569-4554.

Photographs from the Associated Press Archives The Wright Museum in Wolfeboro will honor the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII with an exhibit called Memories of World War II: Photographs from the Associated Press Archives. The exhibit, which runs from July 7 to Sept.

12, contains 120 black-and-white photographs from the Associated Press Archives, and includes some of the most iconic WWII images taken between 1934 and 1945.

Among the photos are the German Army marching into Paris under the Champs-Elysees; Londoners in the underground train stations; Hitler at Berchesgaden; the bombing of Pearl Harbor; FDR, Churchill and Stalin at their Tehran conference; the D-Day invasion; Jack Benny, Bob Hope and Martha Raye entertaining American troops; the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima; MacArthur’s return to the Philippines; the liberation of German concentration camps; the surrender of the Japanese on the USS Missouri; the sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square; and much, much more.
