Manhasset graduates move on to take next step b y G a b r i e ll e D e o n a t h I’m somewhat proud that I took a risk Jason Fiacco, valedictorian at Manhasset High School’s 96th annual commencement on Friday, recalled the first risk he took as a 4-year-old. Fiacco said that as he watched his father inflate basketballs with a handheld pump, he thought he could become smarter by making his brain bigger. With this goal in mind, he took the nozzle of the pump, put it in his ear, and began to pump air through it. The result, Fiacco said, was a broken eardrum and a trip to the emergency room. “My basketball pumping ear experiment was really the first time I could remember experiencing failure and disappointment, and it surely wasn’t the last,” Fiacco said. “Whenever I tell this story,
and pursued my idea, despite the fact that it didn’t work out. Taking a chance and diving into the unknown might lead to failure, but it’s the only way to see if you’ll succeed.” Kevin Gleason, class president, also touched upon the theme of success and failure in his address, citing historical figures like Thomas Edison, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr. who faced major setbacks in their lifetime, but were ultimately successful in their efforts and made great impacts. “Although you may be tempted by material goals – making lots of money or driving fancy cars – remember that true happiness is the result of having a passion and never giving up if you have Continued on Page 60
