Great Neck: A special place to live BY B I LL SAN ANTONIO When the Native American tribe of the Mattinecock first settled in what is now northwest Nassau County hundreds of years ago, they called the region “Menhaden-Ock,” likely due to the large fish population that swam the surrounding waters. Legend has it that when European settlers later arrived in the 1640s, “Menhaden-Ock” became “Madnan’s Neck,” after local woman Anne “Nan” Hutchinson unsuccessfully tried to take over modern-day Kings Point.

Her vicious temper even earned her the nickname “Mad Nan.” But before long, another name emerged that has come to define the area in the latter centuries - Great Neck. The Gold Coast community became a staple of the lavish parties and high-class North Shore living during the Roaring Twenties, with Kings Point providing the backdrop for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s celebrated 1925 novel, “The Great Gatsby,” as West Egg, countering the posh East Egg of Port Washington’s Manorhaven. Great Neck, to Fitzgerald, symbolized the era’s decadence,

seeping from New York City to its surrounding suburbs as America hurtled toward seemingly inevitable depression. Incidentally, Great Neck is among the first communities one encounters when entering Long Island. Occupying approximately 1.4 square miles, its nine villages and four unincorporated areas have long been a hot bed for economic and housing growth. While its permanent Manhattan headquarters were being constructed in the 1940s, the United Nations took up residency in Great Neck, further diversifying an area borne of Native

Americans and reared by the Dutch and English. Today, Great Neck has become known primarily for its myriad of Jewish heritages, beginning with the Second World War’s influx of Ashkenazi Jews and later an influx of Iranian Jews fleeing the 1979 Islamic Revolution as well as, more recently, the Orthodox, Reform and Conservative sects. And aside from the wealthy Jay Gatsby and his confidante Nick Carraway, Great Neck has also been home to plenty of beloved celebrities, from comedy legends Sid Caesar and the Marx Brothers to Olympic figure skaters Sarah and Emily Hughes and “60 Minutes” correspondent Bob Simon, among others. With its 35-minute train ride to Manhattan, and proximity to the Q10 and Q46 New York City bus lines, it’s no wonder Great Neck has also become a convenient base for the rich and famous, or a logical location for developers to jumpstart the real estate market. The advent of telephone service out to Great Neck and the birth of the Long Island Railroad in the mid 1920s made the Gold Coast more accessible than ever before, sparking suburban expansion decades before Levittown was established on the back of the G.I. Bill. Large-scale developments

were planned and constructed, with many low-income residents lured to occupy them. But as the Great Depression hit, so too were other projects in development, halting the growth of the newly-incorporated Village of Great Neck Plaza, which is now considered the epicenter of the community. Just as Great Neck has endured hard times, it continues to work toward a brighter tomorrow. The Great Neck School District has long been regarded among the best in the northeast, from a 1952 Life Magazine profile about progressive classroom habits to the Intel Science Talent Search and National Merit Scholarship finalists and semifinalists that seem to emerge every year. The Great Neck Public Library is amid a major renovation of its Main Branch, funded by a $10.4 million bond approved by voters. Great Neck residents also play a major role within the Town of North Hempstead, Nassau County and New York state governments. They’re the doctors, nurses and administrators that run the North Shore-LIJ Health System. They run businesses and teach your children. But, perhaps most significantly, they’re the ones who will ensure that Great Neck’s future is as illustrious as its past.

About the United States Merchant Marine Academy United States Merchant Marine Academy is a federal service academy that educates and graduates licensed Merchant Marine officers of exemplary character who serve America’s marine transportation and defense needs in peace and war. With 95 percent of the world's products transported over water, these leaders are vital to the effective operation of our merchant fleet for both commercial and military transport during war and peace. Academy graduates abide by the motto “Acta Non Verba" - deeds not words, and are leaders that exemplify the concept of service above self. Known for its rigorous academic program, USMMA requires more credit hours for a baccalaureate degree than any other Federal service academy. This challenging coursework is augmented by the Academy’s Sea year experience, which affords midshipmen the opportunity to acquire hands-on, real-world experiences aboard working commercial vessels sailing to ports around the world. All graduates have a service obligation upon graduation that provides the most career options offered by any of the federal academy. • Graduates can choose to work five years in the United States maritime industry with eight years of service as an officer in any reserve unit of the armed forces. • Or five years active duty in any of the nation’s armed forces. In time of war or national emergency, the U.S. Merchant Marine becomes vital to national security as a "fourth arm of defense." Our merchant ships bear the brunt of delivering military troops, supplies and equipment overseas to our forces and allies operating as an auxiliary unit to the Navy. The stark lessons of the twenty first century conflicts again prove that a strong merchant marine is an essential part of American security and sea power.

The nation's economic and security needs met by the U.S. Merchant Marine are compelling. Today, the United States imports approximately 85 percent of some 77 strategic commodities critical to America's industry and defense. Although we, as a nation, account for only six percent of the world population, we purchase nearly a third of the world's output of raw materials. Ninety-nine percent of these materials are transported by merchant vessels. But the most important element in a productive merchant fleet and a strong transportation industry is people - men and women who can lead with integrity, honor, intelligence, dedication, and competence. Saving the Stepping Stones Lighthouse B y A lice K asten Over the past few years, you’ve been reading a lot about the Stepping Stones Lighthouse, the beacon that was constructed in 1876 to guard the Long Island Sound entrance to New York Harbor. The Coast Guard granted the Town of North Hempstead stewardship of the lighthouse in 2006, and the Town was charged with maintaining and improving its condition. Its state of repair is quite poor: there are holes in the foundation and the roof, the masonry is bulging, the exterior paint is cracked. The windows have been boarded over, the interior walls are gone, and the fog bell is missing. In addition, the lighthouse needs a dock so that people and materials can be safely brought over to fix the structure. The Town of North Hempstead employed Cashin Engineering Associates to undertake sounding studies of the waters and sea floor bottom around the lighthouse and those studies have now been completed. The engineering firm’s divers worked underneath the surface to determine the condition of the base of the structure and the

configuration of the sea floor to recommend a location for a fixed dock. The required dock is estimated to cost approximately $200,000. Many repairs must be made before the Town can begin construction of the dock. It has been estimated that complete renovation of Stepping Stones may reach

over $4 million. The Town has applied for a grant, which, if received, would pay for part of the dock–a drop of the total cost. The Town has partnered with the Great Neck Historical Society and the Great Neck Park District to help publicize the need for care of our lighthouse and to help raise the funds for that repair. The Park District has, in fact, made some temporary repairs to the roof, hoping to carry the Lighthouse through rough weather. The Historical Society has made a series of presentations to various community and school groups about the Lighthouse. A fundraising square dance was held last November. It was so well received that the square dance will be repeated, probably this coming November. In addition, boat tours have been planned for the summer months. While we cannot land at the Lighthouse at this time, we can tour the waters and estates surrounding the light, and learn the history of City Island, Hart Island and the lands once belonging to the likes of Walter Chrysler, George M. Cohan and silent film star Olga Petrova. The lighthouse will soon have its

own website, but in the meantime you can follow the progress at the website of the Great Neck Historical Society: www.greatneckhistorical.org and on Facebook. There will also be lots of information available—along with T-shirts for purchase—at the Great Neck Village Street Fair on May 22. You can even view a video about the lighthouse made by the Town on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=hWyhWmlP4uE. If the lighthouse is not repaired, the Coast Guard will erect an ugly metal tower with a beacon at the top and knock the building down. We will have then lost yet another part of our history, and our connection to life on the peninsula in the 1800s. When we preserve historic structures we preserve irreplaceable cultural resources. There have been many people who have expressed sadness about the impending destruction of Great Neck’s Playhouse Theater, and the losses of other fine buildings around the peninsula. The Town of North Hempstead, the Great Neck Historical Society and the Park District are hoping that we can save the Stepping Stone Lighthouse from this fate.

Community is working to restore the Saddle Rock Grist Mill B y A lice K asten President, Great Neck Historical Society

Drive around the Great Neck area, and you will find signs pointing to the Saddle Rock Grist Mill. The mill, the property of Nassau County, used to be visited by school children who learned its history and brought home sacks of grain produced between its stones. But, unfortunately, no one has been able to visit lately and many have forgotten the importance of the mill. The Saddle Rock Grist Mill was built around 1700 to grind the grain that was produced on the farms that filled the Great Neck peninsula. Originally it

was used to grind corn, and that flour was then sold to the world markets. First owned by Robert Hubbs, Jr., it was sold to Henry Allen in 1702, and passed through the Allen family, eventually being sold to Richard Udall in 1833. The Udalls improved and updated the mill, using it to grind not only corn, but many other grains as well. They also used the mill as a dock for ships purchasing the products of Great Neck’s prosperous farms. The mill continued to pass through the Udall family, and eventually became the property of Louise Udall Eldridge, the same Louise Eldridge who helped to found the Great Neck Library, Park District, and Village of Saddle Rock. Mrs.

Eldridge restored the mill, and upon her death it became the property of the Nassau County Historical Society. It was deeded to Nassau County in 1955 to insure restoration. One of the few remaining tidal mills on Long Island, it is on the National Registry of Historic Places. The mill has been restored numerous times, most recently in 1992, but increasing natural disasters such as Hurricane Sandy, as well as decreasing funding have taken their toll. The mill, once the site of school field trips, has been closed for years, waiting the funding that will make it safe for visits. Nassau County received a $45,000 grant for architectural evaluation that was used to generate an en-

gineer’s report. That report shows that it will take hundreds of thousands of dollars to make the building structurally sound and, spurred by Great Neck Historical Society member and County Legislator Ellen Birnbaum, the county is actively seeking state and federal grants to meet that goal. Students at the Saddle Rock Elementary School have also written letters of support to the county. It is very difficult to design and shape the eyebrows properly. Although we know the basics, we should give them to a professional expert on eyebrows to sculpt them to a perfect shape suitable to your features. The bone structure, features, and facial shape (round, oval, pear, heart, or square) have to be considered in the design of the eyebrows. The goal is for the eyebrows to enhance the eyes and face naturally and create harmonious balance. If you decide to permanently modify or change your eyebrows, check the credentials and look at the portfolio for the person you choose. A good professional will give you the best design to enhance your face, consider your bone structure, natural features, skin tone, previous cosmetic procedures, and personality.
