A team of Roslyn students won fourth place in the Western Long Island Science Olympiad, qualifying for the state competition this month in Syracuse. Teams participated in the competition at Kellenberg Memorial High School on Saturday, Jan. 28. From 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., Roslyn students put their scientific knowledge to the test, competing against 34 other teams in all 22 Science Olympiad events. These events vary from building the lightest bridge with the highest structural efficiency to answering questions that require the identification of insects by order and family in less than one minute. The Roslyn A team finished in fourth place overall, good enough to qualify for the state competition. Medals were given to the top seven teams for each event. Altogether, Roslyn students earned medals in 12 different events, and obtained top 10 finishes in five other events. Special congratulations to medal winners Bowen Yu and William Berger, fifth

place Air Trajectory; Sahil Anand and Bowen Yu, first place Astronomy; Tawny Sit and Josh Kuperman, seventh place Astronomy; William Berger and Parker Miller, fifth place Bungee Drop; Anuj Gupta and Kamyar Ghiam, third place Cell Biology; Sahil Anand and Shawn Anand, second place Chemistry Lab; Dena Kohn and Aansh Shah, fourth place Disease Detectives; Rachel Mintz and Eunice Kim, sixth place Entomology; Dena Kohn and Shawn Anand, fourth place Forensics; Ethan Chan and Jonathan Liao, fourth place Game On; Adam Robbins and Parker Miller, fourth place Geologic Mapping; Adam Robbins and Bowen Yu, third place It’s About Time. The team could not have achieved such incredible success without the steadfast guidance and encouragement from club advisers Vincent Kreyling, William Marvin and Irena Tsarevsky. Team captains Sahil Anand, Rachel Mintz, Dean Oken, Aansh Shah and Bowen Yu, as well as junior captains Shawn Anand, Kamyar Ghiam and Anuj Gupta, are eagerly anticipating the state competition.
