DAVID IGE Governor State of Hawai‘i

SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM

THE GOVERNOR OF HAWAI‘I On behalf of the people of Hawai‘i, I send a warm aloha to the athletes, football fans and millions of ESPN viewers across the country watching the 2019 SoFi Hawai‘i Bowl at the Aloha Stadium on O‘ahu. Hawai‘i is proud to host this traditional Christmas football game, an event made in Hawai‘i and played in Hawai‘i, and we are eager to share the Aloha Spirit in the sports arena. This year the University of Hawai‘i (UH) Rainbow Warriors football team made history by cinching the West Division title for the very first time. They have proven themselves with their dedication and hard work on and off the field. And now, a rendezvous for two classic rivals at the 18th annual SoFi Hawai‘i Bowl. Back in 1930, both UH and Brigham Young University (BYU) met up in their first match against each other and played 30 more times since then. Once again, we are proud to have our very own Rainbow Warriors facing the Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars in a test of perseverance and skill. In much the same way these athletes work hard to give their best, the Hawai‘i Bowl Foundation is dedicated to giving back to our community, especially Hawai‘i’s youth. Since its inception, the foundation has raised over $1,300,000 for charity. Mahalo to the Hawai‘i Bowl Foundation for sharing aloha. Mahalo to our local and national sponsors and to the SoFi Hawai‘i Bowl organizers for making this exciting event happen. To our visiting teams and families, take time to see the sights and enjoy all that Hawai‘i has to offer. To all our football fans, enjoy the game, and best wishes to both teams!

With warmest regards, David Ige Governor, State of Hawai‘i

BYU enters the SoFi Hawai’i Bowl after a 7-5 regular season that featured some big wins against a challenging schedule in 2019. The Cougars started the season as the only program to play three ranked teams and four Power 5 opponents in their first four games. Overall, nine of BYU’s 11 FBS opponents finished the season bowl eligible and BYU’s five wins over teams with a winning record ranked tied for No. 7 nationally. The Cougars faced four ranked teams overall and three opponents—No. 11 Utah, No. 19 Boise State and No. 22 USC—finished ranked in the final College Football Playoff rankings. BYU earned a 2-1 record in those games with wins over the 12-1 Broncos and 8-4 Trojans.

setbacks at Toledo and South Florida. During that stretch injuries started to play a significant role as the team’s top running back senior Ty’Son Williams went down for the season with a knee injury against Washington and starting sophomore quarterback Zach Wilson followed with a thumb injury at Toledo that sidelined him the next four games.

After a 30-12 loss to No. 14 Utah in the opener, BYU claimed dramatic overtime wins the next two weeks against two historic college football programs. A 29-26 double-overtime triumph at Tennessee came against the SEC East Division’s thirdplace team that finished 7-5 overall. BYU’s 3027 overtime win over the No. 24 USC was BYU’s first in three meetings against the Trojans, who placed second in the Pac-12 South with a 7-2 league mark. Following the strong start, the Cougars endured a threegame losing streak that started at home against No. 21 Washington before road

While freshman backup quarterback Jaren Hall performed well in Wilson’s absence, he couldn’t stay on the field for a complete game after being injured first at USF and later at Utah State. Third-stringer Baylor Romney proved ready when called as the freshman led BYU

to wins as the starter over No. 14 Boise State and Liberty and had a strong second-half performance in place of Hall in a 42-14 road win at rival Utah State. The victory over nationally ranked Boise State stopped the threegame skid while starting a five-game winning streak. Following wins over the Broncos, Aggies and Flames, Wilson returned to action for a 42-10 home victory over Idaho State and a 56-24 road win over UMass before a 13-3 defeat at 9-3 San Diego State in the season finale. The Cougars finished the regular season ranked No. 24 in passing offense (285.6 yards per game) despite starting three different quarterbacks. During the team’s final five games—all in November—BYU boasted the nation’s No. 8 offense (520.6 yards per game), No. 13 passing offense

(323.0 yards per game) and No. 34 rushing offense (197.6 yards per game). On defense, BYU tied for No. 9 nationally with 15 interceptions, while ranking tied for No. 18 in turnovers gained with 22. The Cougar defense also proved effective limiting big plays, finishing tied for No. 6 in fewest plays of 20 or more yards allowed with 37.

COUGAR PRIDE: KALANI SITAKE

Kalani Sitake (pronounced kah-lah-nee see-tah-kay) is in his fourth season overseeing the BYU football program since being named head coach on December 19, 2015. In November 2019 Sitake’s contract was extended through 2023. A former Cougar running back (1994, 1997-2000), Sitake is the 14th head coach in BYU history and just the fourth since 1972, when Hall of Fame coach LaVell Edwards took over the program. Sitake is the first former player under Edwards to be named head coach at BYU. He returned to lead his alma mater with 15 years of coaching experience, including seven seasons a defensive coordinator and four years as an assistant head coach. Sitake came to BYU from Oregon State, where he served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator in 2015 under head coach Gary Andersen. Prior to Oregon State, Sitake spent 10 seasons at the University of Utah under head coach Kyle Whittingham. He started at Utah in 2005 as the linebackers coach and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2009 before also being named assistant head coach in 2012. During his career, Sitake has helped mentor 17 NFL Draft picks. Most recently, BYU linebackers Sione Takitaki (2019 third round by the Cleveland Browns) and Fred Warner (2018 third round by the San Francisco 49ers) were selected by NFL teams along with running back Jamaal Williams (2017 fourth round by the Green Bay Packers). Williams finished his BYU career as the school’s all-time leading rusher after averaging the nation’s fifth-best per-game totals at 137.5 yards per outing for Sitake’s Cougars in 2016. Warner, meanwhile, completed a standout career to become an immediate starter in the NFL, where he is among the league’s top tacklers. Sitake began his coaching career in 2001 as the defensive backs and special teams coach at Eastern Arizona before becoming a defensive graduate assistant at BYU in 2002 under Gary Crowton. Sitake then joined the staff at Southern Utah where he coached running backs, tight ends and offensive line during the 2003 and 2004 seasons. He began his BYU playing career in 1994 prior to serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Oakland, California. After returning and redshirting in 1997, Sitake was a three-year starter at fullback for the Cougars from 1998-2000 under Edwards. A team captain as a senior, Sitake’s last game as a player was also the last game coached by the legendary Edwards, a great mentor for Sitake. This year’s bowl game will be the 11th bowl of Sitake’s coaching career. He has been on the winning side in nine of the prior 10 contests, including a 2-0 mark as a head coach. The Cougars defeated Wyoming 24-21 in the 2016 Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego and dominated Western Michigan 49-18 in last year’s Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Born in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, and raised in Laie, Hawai’i and Provo, Utah, Sitake is the nation’s first FBS head football coach of Tongan descent. He graduated from BYU in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in English. Sitake and his wife Timberly have three children, Skye, Sadie and Kelaokalani (KK).

The University of Hawai‘i football team began the 2019 season with 20 returning starters – tied for most in FBS – yet most media pundits predicted the Rainbow Warriors would finish no higher than fourth in the West Division of the Mountain West. Boy, were they wrong. The Rainbow Warriors (9-5) went on to capture the program’s first West Division title and advance to the MW Championship Game. UH posted back-to-back 8+-win seasons for the first time since 2006-07 and are headed to the SoFi Hawai‘i Bowl for the third time in the last four years. But it wasn’t easy. The 2019 schedule featured three straight Pac12 opponents to open the season while three other opponents finished nationally ranked in 2018. Under fourth-year head coach Nick Rolovich, the Warriors defeated Arizona and Oregon State in consecutive weeks at Aloha Stadium to start 2-0 for the third straight year.

After a loss to nationallyranked Washington in Seattle, UH returned for a Homecoming win over Central Arkansas in which Cole McDonald threw four touchdown passes. With snow flurries greeting the Warriors as they opened Mountain West play, Hawai‘i routed Nevada 54-3 for its first win in Reno since 2007 and its largest ever MW win. Next up was a date with

Boise State on the blue turf of Albertsons Stadium, which would be a preview of the MW Championship. The Broncos turned three first half Warrior turnovers into touchdowns and a 59-37 victory. It wouldn’t get much better for UH the following week as Air Force left Aloha Stadium with both a 56-26 victory and the Kuter Trophy. Hawai‘i rebounded in a big way against New Mexico. UH jumped out to a 35-3 halftime lead – its largest ever on the road–and defeated the Lobos for the first time since 1991. The following week proved another

pivotal match-up for the Warriors against Fresno State. The Bulldogs kicked a last-second field goal for a 41-38 victory, seemingly dashing Hawai‘i’s West Division title hopes. Two more rivalry trophies were on the line over the next two weeks. In a battle for the newly created Dick Tomey Legacy Trophy, the Warriors, behind quarterback Chevan Cordeiro’s five TDs, out-lasted the Spartans 4240. In front of thousands of green-clad fans in Las Vegas, Hawai‘i retained the Island Showdown Trophy and gained bowl eligibility with a 21-7 victory over UNLV. McDonald came off the bench to rally the Warriors, who coupled with a San Diego State loss, was now in position to win the West Division. The winner of the UH and SDSU match-up would represent the West in the MW Championship. The Warriors escaped with a 1411 victory after the Aztecs’ last second field goal attempt sailed wide. The following week, UH sent off its 23 seniors in style with a 52-31 win over Army West Point. In a rematch with the Broncos in Boise, the Warriors held tough until the final two minutes of the first half. BSU scored two touchdowns in a 53-second span to take a 17-3 lead at halftime. The

lead ballooned to 31-3 in the third quarter as UH saw its bid for a first Mountain West championship slip away. Rolovich was tabbed as the MW’s Coach of the Year while a record 11 Warriors were honored by the conference, including first-team wide receiver Cedric Byrd II. Byrd has a season-high 95 receptions, the seventh-best single-season total in program history. McDonald, who received second-team honors, became the third UH quarterback to surpass 3,000-yards passing in multiple seasons.

In four seasons as head coach of the Rainbow Warriors, Nick Rolovich has made the SoFi Hawai‘i Bowl an annual holiday event for his football team. This year marks UH’s third appearance in the bowl game under Rolovich and a record ninth overall. The former Warrior signal caller has led Hawai‘i back into the national spotlight with back-to-back 8+-win seasons. This year’s squad, which appeared in the program’s first-ever Mountain West Championship Game, has a chance to become just the seventh UH team to win 10 games. Rolovich earned MW Coach of the Year honors this season after leading the Warriors to their first West Division title. The regular season began with a pair of wins over Pac-12 teams and concluded with a four-game win streak which included a 14-11 victory over San Diego State that sealed the West Division. Over the past two years, UH has lit up the scoreboard and featured a Top 10 passing attack with the Run-and-Shoot offense that Rolovich made famous in the early 2000s. Quarterback Cole McDonald became just the third Warrior quarterback to record multiple 3,000-yard passing seasons and UH has a legitimate chance to feature three 1,000-

yard receivers, which has only happened six times in FBS history. Rolovich has also helped to rejuvenate the fan base. His “Live Aloha, Play Warrior” and “Pride Rock” slogans, which echoed throughout his introductory press conference, are the rallying cry of his teams and have helped bring back pride to a program that slumped through five straight losing seasons prior to his arrival. He became the program’s 23rd head coach when he was hired in December 2015 following a four-year stint as Nevada’s offensive coordinator. Prior to Nevada, Rolovich spent four seasons (200811) on former UH head coach Greg McMackin’s staff and directed one of the top passing offenses in the nation. Quarterback Bryant Moniz threw for 10,169 career passing yards under Rolovich’s watch as Hawai‘i’s offensive coordinator. During the 2010 season, UH led the nation in passing offense (394.3 ypg) and finished sixth in total offense (500.6 ypg). Rolovich has been apart of eight bowls teams in 12 seasons coaching at the FBS level. He has coached four quarterbacks who went on to play professionally: UH’s Moniz (CFL – Hamilton Tiger-Cats) and Shane Austin (AFL – Philadelphia Soul); Nevada’s Fajardo (CFL – BC Lions); and City College of San Francisco’s Jeremiah Masoli (CFL – Hamilton Tiger-Cats). Rolovich was a two-year letterwinner at quarterback for Hawai‘i from 2000-01, starting the bulk of the 2001 season and leading the team to an 8-1 record as a starter. He passed for 4,176 career yards and 40 touchdowns and still holds six school passing records. The highlight of his career was perhaps one of the best performances in college football history. Rolovich led the Warriors to an upset over previously unbeaten and No. 9 BYU in the 2001 season finale, 72-45, with 543 yards and eight touchdowns. As a senior that season, he ranked 10th nationally in passing efficiency with a 150.5 rating and broke 19 school passing and eight total offense records. He went on to play professionally for the Rhein Fire (NFL Europe) as well as in the Arena Football League for the San Jose SaberCats, Arizona Rattlers, Chicago Rush and Las Vegas Gladiators. The Novato, Calif., native earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from UH (2004) and a master’s in human performance and sport from New Mexico Highlands (2007). Rolovich and his wife, Analea, have three sons, Daniel, William and Patrick, and a daughter, Alana.

The 2020 Census is for our family. Stretching across the United States, we are one family. Your voice matters, and your community matters. Every 10 years, the United States counts everyone living in the country. Our community is depending on your participation, including our keiki and kupuna. Census data informs decisions about critical funding to help our families flourish. That includes funding for things like: › Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

› Housing assistance

› Health clinics

› Water and waste disposal systems for communities

› Special education

› Public transportation

Beginning in mid-March 2020, every household in the United States will receive a notice to complete the census online, by phone, or by mail. The form asks a handful of basic questions. From May – July 2020, census takers from your community will visit households that have not yet responded, and they can assist you in completing your form. Your personal information is confidential, is protected by law, and can never be used to identify you.
