COMPLETING HIS DESTINY
I don’t look back and say, ‘I wish I was that guy again’ – because I don’t. I’m real happy with age. I love being older.
– Harrison Ford
HOLLYWOOD LEGEND HARRISON FORD was at the recent Cannes Film Festival with his latest – and possibly last – outing as Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Directed by James Mangold, the film finds the daredevil archaeologist in a race against time to retrieve a legendary dial that can change the course of history.
The 80-year-old actor received a five-minute standing ovation after the screening of the film at Cannes.
In the South of France, he sat down to talk about returning to his famous character, how he looks back on himself as a younger man in the early ‘Indiana Jones’ films and his recent TV projects including Shrinking and 1923
You seemed very moved at the of premiere Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny – can you describe how you felt?
It was indescribable.
I felt… I can’t even tell you.
I mean, it’s just extraordinary to see a kind of relic of your life as it passes by.
With the warmth of this place and the sense of community, the welcome is unimaginable.
And it makes me feel good. [laughs]
Can you share what you wanted Indy to do in this finale?
I wanted to see a good movie. I wanted to see a completion of the five films.
I wanted to round out the story. I wanted to see this man who depended so much on his youth and vigour of youth, I wanted to see the weight of life on him.
I wanted to see him require re-invention, re-support. And I wanted him to have a relationship that was not a kind of flirty movie relationship.
I wanted him to have a deep relationship with somebody.
And I wanted to work with Jim, which was proposed at a certain point.
I could not have been better served with a script, with the kind of actors that we’ve been lucky enough to get, with the passion and the skill that Jim has brought to it, that John Williams has brought to it.
Everything has come together to support me in my old age [laughs]. >>
What was it like when you first got the call from James Mangold to say the film was going ahead?
Well, there was no phone call. There was no phone call.
Look, I was delighted, I love his films, I know his films but I didn’t know him as well as I’ve come to know him.
And he is the most generous, most supportive, most disciplined of directors.
But, for me, the secret to his success is that he never stops.
He pours himself into the job and it’s the sweat equity that he puts into these projects that make them live, make them sing.
He filled the shoes that Steven [Spielberg] left for us in an extraordinary way.
And it was not just filling the shoes, he more than filled the shoes, he made, for me, a beautiful movie.
What drives you to keep making films at this point in your life?
I love the work.
I just want to work and I want to tell stories, good stories.
And I have been so lucky in my life to have that opportunity.
Why do you feel that now is the right time to let Indy go?
Is it not evident? I need to sit down and rest a little bit [laughs], you know?
The reason – I love to work and I love this character and I love what it brought into my life and that’s all I can say.
There is the saying ‘it’s not magic, it’s math’. Indy is a math guy. Where in the making of this film was it math and where was it magic?
I think you don’t want to separate the myth and the magic, they belong in the same box.
There’s a little myth, there’s a little magic.
But there’s all of what’s planned and then when it’s peopled [referring to cast and crew] – it becomes real.
So you want the support of all of those elements of the story.
It takes a little math but they bring the magic.
Because the story supports their characters, because the alliance between character and story is observed from the very beginning and it’s understood that the character supports the story and the story supports the character.
It’s a knit and it’s f—king magic – when it works.
And if it doesn’t work – it’s a nightmare.
So there’s magic here and it comes from the collaboration, from the knit of everybody’s ambition and what they are willing to put into it.
And I’ve never seen actors give as much to each other.
You have had one of the most successful careers in the industry – is there any role you have regretted not taking or is there something that you are really looking forward to doing? We know you have been doing tv recently?
I love doing comedy, I love Shrinking and I’m going to do another season.
I’m also lucky enough that 1923 has been picked up again, so I get to do another season of that.
What was the other thing?
Any regrets of parts you didn’t take?
Nah. If it happens it happens and if it doesn’t, there’s a reason for it somewhere.
What was your impression when you saw yourself on the big screen as a young man?
The technology has evolved, or this iteration of that technology has evolved to the point where it, to me, seems very realistic.
And I know that that is my face, it’s not kind of photoshopped magic, that’s what I looked like
35 years ago because Lucas Film has every frame of film that we’ve made together over all of these years.
This process, this scientific mining of the library was put to good use. But it’s just a trick unless it’s supported by good story.
And it sticks out like a sore thumb if it’s not honest and it’s not real – I’m not talking about visually, I mean emotionally real.
I think it was used very skillfully and assiduously so I’m very happy with it.
But I don’t look back and say, ‘I wish I was that guy again’ – because I don’t.
I’m real happy with age. I love being older. It was great to be young but sh-tfire, I could be dead.
And I’m still working so, go figure.
You weren’t originally cast as Indiana Jones but here you are and it has become one of your most indelible performances. Can you talk about the destiny that brought you here, that brought this character to life?
Yeah man. All true.
There are so many people with talents that never get to see the light of day – and that’s a terrible shame.
Because for many of us, we don’t find an easy fit.
There’s something about actors, they can be very unhappy if they can’t work. And often they can’t work unless they are asked to work.
There are other ways of doing this but in my case, I had to wait for luck to come along.
But during that period of time, I had the opportunity to learn from my experience a bit of craft because luck will not save the day.
There’s a craft skill involved in what we do, I think.
And the art which may occasionally show itself in what we do is a spirit that we all seek.
But we know the satisfaction comes from the work that we do, from the pain that we feel when we disappoint, from the joy that we feel when we’re adequate, successful.
And so you’re in the process of recreating your life, in your imagination at least, through the progress of your personal history.
My luck has been to work with incredibly talented people, to find my way into this crowd of geniuses – and not get my ar-sed kicked out when I didn’t do as well as I wanted to.
I was allowed to continue and I apparently have still got a chance to work
And I want that. I want that in my life. I need that challenge.
Finally, have you kept anything from making the ‘Indiana Jones’ movies – where is your famous hat?
I think it’s at Sothebys [laughs] – where it will earn a lot of money for charity, I hope.
I do have a hat but I’m not sort of nostalgic about that.
The experience of making these films is what lives with me and that I treasure
The stuff is great but it’s not about the stuff, it’s about the experience.

Montblanc incorporates new colours and original shapes to its Soft Collection.
RECOGNISABLE FOR ITS MULTI-USE shapes and comfort in soft leather, Montblanc’s Soft Collection introduces new practical styles and an elegant colour palette, reimagining the classic spirit of travel for the contemporary age.
The extended colour selection includes a dusty grey, a light brick, a spicy orange, a Scottish green and ottanio, a petrol blue colour.
New styles in the collection will also be launched in black as a Montblanc signature.
“When you travel, whether for a commute or for a long voyage, you want something that is comfortable, light and effortlessly stylish, a companion that is familiar and makes you feel at home,” says Marco Tomasetta, Montblanc Artistic Director.
“That’s why we chose a very soft, supple leather in original colours for this collection, and why we added new shapes that are not just practical but also sensual, fun and elegant.”
In the Soft Collection, functional elements such as compartments and organisation solutions are placed on the outside of each piece, becoming part of the design rather than remaining hidden on the inside.
The detailing throughout the pieces is consistent with the design codes of the Montblanc Meisterstück line, with features linking back to the iconic Meisterstück writing instrument.
The nib is referenced in the leather details and particularly in the nib-shaped leather zip puller.
Some of the small leather accessories also carry the shape of an envelope thanks to their overlapping leather sections.
The collection’s large leather pieces allow for ample packing space no matter the destination, including a versatile 24/7 bag in dusty grey, suitable for life on-the-move, and a suitcase in signature black with classic leather straps for longer trips.
A backpack in black with vertical zip pockets on either side of a central strap, a medium duffle and a thin document case in dusty grey are elegant everyday companions.
The medium messenger in black and a pochette in black or light brick make a stylish statement, while a mini bag transforms the Montblanc writing instrument into an accessory with its external writing instrument holder.
The small leather assortment features leather wallets, a card holder, a passport holder, a phone pouch, pen pouches and a round case to be worn over the shoulder or cross-body in a mix of colours.
The Soft Collection is available online and at Montblanc boutiques worldwide including the new store in Edward St, Brisbane.

& DESIGN DÉCOR
Transform your home into a luxurious, cosy winter retreat.
IF YOUR HOME is still in summer mode, it’s time to flick the switch to ensure it’s ready to embrace the chillier weather instead.
However, you don’t have to break the bank to turn your home into a luxurious cosy, winter retreat.
With a few carefully selected investments and design tips, you can create the ultimate sanctuary that blissfully cocoons you.
According to Alexandra Tanya-Weller, Creative Director and Cofounder of Miss Amara, when it comes to creating cosy spaces, it's all about tapping into your senses to make a serene winter hideaway that makes you feel at peace.
From sight to touch; Alexandra shares her interior design tips.
EMBRACE FAUX FUR
Nothing warms living areas up physically and visually quite like faux fur in luxe neutral shades of creams, browns and dusky greys.
Whether you want to go all out or inject a small dose, introducing faux fur is incredibly easy.
Try adding a pop of interest to your couch or bed by including some faux fur cushions, or drape a throw over the end of a bed, couch or chair.
Rugs are also a great way to gain comfort underfoot while also adding interest to plain timber floors.
During winter, switch out woven flat rugs for fluffy faux fur numbers.
UP THE AMBIENCE WITH LIGHTING
The right lighting in winter has the power to bring in warmth, and help homes feel cosier and more inviting during the darker, colder evenings. Opt for warm-white bulbs, which produce light ranging from mild orange to yellow-white in appearance.
This is the best option for creating calm living spaces, and is also perfect for use in bedrooms and dining rooms.
Another way to bring a sense of warmth to winter days is by introducing an array of candles and scents.
THE POWER OF COLOUR
Colour has the ability to influence mood and physiological reactions, so is a great method for elevating interiors while keeping the winter blues at bay.
For example, the colour green can make you feel grounded while blue has been proven to boost creativity and shades of red have been found to increase attention to detail.
If you’re looking to have a colour revamp during the colder months, darker shades should be adopted to give the illusion of sophistication and warmth.
Darker hues also go hand in hand with colours synonymous with winter, such as oranges, greens and browns.
LAYER YOUR HOME TEXTILES
Layered fabrics, furniture, textures and rich neutrals are an inherent feature of classic design and cosy spaces.
Try adding additional cushions to your bedroom or sofa or doubling up on woolly throws.
Shaggy area rugs also provide the right antidote, especially when set atop an existing area or wall-to-wall rug.
Look for textured rugs that offer a tactile feel, and you’ve got a win-win all around.
CHANGE UP YOUR FURNITURE LAYOUT
Each piece of furniture contributes to cosiness, and so too does the overall layout.
Winter is all about hibernating so it only makes sense to consider creating a space that accommodates spending more time inside such as a designated reading nook with either natural light or a reading lamp and a comfy armchair. Place a table nearby for a stack of your books and hot drink.
When you’re creating your own furniture layout, you should keep in mind that symmetry and classic elegance go hand in hand, so try to create balance. Remember furniture layouts that create cosiness are also those that create intimacy.
COMFORT MAKERS
Introducing The Circle of Harmony – Comfortness – Natuzzi Italia’s
collection
which internationally recognised designers have tackled the theme of comfort.
NATUZZI ITALIA , the Italian lifestyle brand known worldwide for its Mediterranean identity, proudly presented its new collection The Circle of Harmony – Comfortness at Milan Design Week 2023.
The Circle of Harmony is a stylistic exploration project initiated in 2020 at the instigation of Pasquale Junior Natuzzi, the brand’s Chief Creative Officer.
The project seeks to create a physical and virtual community where artists, architects and designers plan and imagine the stylistic evolution of Natuzzi Italia, regarding its heritage as the cornerstone of this journey.
Following the reflections of the past editions of The Circle of Harmony on the themes of functionality and sustainability, Comfortness explores the world of comfort.
Highlighting the idea of sustainability, a key element in claiming quality of life, the aim of
this new chapter of The Circle of Harmony is to combine comfort, design, beauty and utility.
Together with BIG Studio – Bjarke Ingels Group, the contributors to Comfortness are Fabio Novembre, Enrique Martí, Simone Bonanni and Sebastiano Tosi, who, coming from different paths, have created a crossroads of experiences, ideas and creative blending.
“In recent years, the home has become the place where we recuperate our energy and where well-being is an increasingly important aspect,” says Pasquale Junior.
“Everything that is part of this space – volumes, materials, and colours – constitutes comfort, which for Natuzzi has always been an essential element that translates into a maniacal attention to both product and visual comfort with aesthetically reassuring shapes and an in-depth study of colour and light.”
The brand’s flagship store in Via Durini –transformed in 2022 by Fabio Novembre’s new retail concept celebrating Apulian culture and atmospheres – is the setting where all the new Comfortness products were unveiled during Milan Design Week.
The showroom also hosts special projects that tell, in an original way, the story of the culture and craftsmanship of the Apulian territory: the Uragano table, a moving sculpture made in limited edition; the Germogli lamp by artist-designer Marcantonio, which pays homage to the beauty of the Mediterranean landscape; and artist Renzo Buttazzo's sculptures, shaped from the ancient limestone rock typical of Salento .

SPLASH COLLECTION – designed by Enrique Martì
In his collaboration with Natuzzi Italia, Spanish designer Enrique Martì has conceived Splash, a sofa that is the ideal accessory to pause and treat yourself to a break.
A minimal design and simple volumes alternate to guarantee a sensation of relaxation and continuous envelopment that recalls the movement of water.
Splash is accompanied by coffee tables of different sizes which, with their bold, organic structures, create a sinuous two-tone effect, a harmonious, irregular overlapping of pebblelike shapes made of noble materials.
After developing the retail concept of Natuzzi Italia showrooms around the world, architect and designer Fabio Novembre designed Tempio, an unusual coffee table which, like a modern Parthenon, is designed to become the absolute centrepiece of a space.
Travertine makes Tempio an exquisite sculptural accessory with thick contours that exude grandeur and elegance.
The pure geometric shapes that define it create an object with a timeless architectural aesthetic, evoking the same majesty, albeit on a different scale, as the ancient Greek temples.
The encounter between Natuzzi and Bjarke Ingels – one of the most interesting figures in contemporary design and architecture – resulted in Colle, a project inspired by the first Natuzzi models which are recognised for their soft and cosy style.
The name Colle denotes the perfect representation of the Italian landscape overlooking the sea: just like the gentle curves of a hill, the shapes of the modular sofa are designed to accommodate relaxation and socialising by emphasising the visual comfort that is so important to Natuzzi.
MELODY SOFA – designed by Simone Bonanni
Always oriented towards new trends and perspectives in the creative world so as to transpose them into everyday spaces, Simone Bonanni created Melody for his first collaboration with Natuzzi Italia.
An ode to spontaneity, Melody is a modular sofa with a linear structure that encloses everyone who sits down as if in a comforting embrace.
With its pure and reassuring silhouette, Melody is yet another part of Natuzzi Italia’s increasingly visual comfort-oriented approach to product development.
Plenty of space is devoted not only to design and materials, but also to the visual aesthetics of the products with experimentation with shapes, colours and ideas.
RADICE BOOKCASE – designed by Sebastiano Tosi
Radice is a modular system conceived by designer Sebastiano Tosi for Natuzzi Italia.
Made of wood and metal, Radice is designed to be light and adaptable to different needs and spaces.
Its modular identity and the possibility of fixing it to the ceiling or wall permits surprising volumes and customised configurations with shelves and storage units.
The metal elements, which descend vertically throughout the bookcase, resemble many roots of a single large tree, firmly anchored in the ground and dispensing wisdom thanks to its branches containing pages upon pages of knowledge and memories.
WELLBE SOFA – designed by Natuzzi Style Centre
An ode to joie de vivre in the hustle and bustle of modern life to enhance physical and mental well-being, the Wellbe project is a sofa with a cosy and timeless design that relaxes every single part of the body.
Thanks to the triple-motion system that allows the seat, backrest, footrest and headrest to be independently adjusted, amplifying the feeling of comfort, Wellbe brings the value of Natuzzi research and development to every living area.

Inspired by the lightness of wing, the dynamic, pure and elegant lines give the collection a style suitable for both urban contexts and environments where nature is the protagonist.
The elements are characterised by a folded aluminium structure and enriched by geometric and essential lines that recall the world of architecture.
Combining lightness and strength, the WING collection features super thick cushions with high density foams for an extra soft seating experience. A-class solid teak wood with ‘0’mm surface from yacht silicone, which is used in yachts for its resistance, gives a luxury touch while adding durability.

TEA TIME
From the ‘Man Tea’ to ‘High Coffee’, it is time to celebrate High Tea diversity.
WE CAN GIVE CREDIT to Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, for coming up with the idea of high tea.
Suffering hunger pains as she waited for her evening meal, Anna requested a tray of tea, cake and bread to be brought to her.
The idea soon caught on, and high tea became an easier way for ladies to entertain than having people to lunch.
The new colony of Australia followed many English trends, including high tea.
Tea houses spread across the country with colonisation, many offering treats such as sandwiches, scones and small cakes, fare common to an English high tea experience.
Today, as a multicultural nation that values inclusivity, high tea has diverged from English tradition to encompass a flourish of world flavours.
Let’s veer away from the expected for a moment to appreciate some high teas with a difference.
WORDS MARJ OSBORNE
In a poignant synergy of history, South African born mother and daughter team Ursula and Leigh-Ann Shead founded Pickers & Co in the early 1900s Cobb & Co homestead in Upper Coomera.
The multi-functional venue fulfills many roles including gift and homewares shop, coffee house and eatery.
A South African-themed Karoo House High Coffee provides a taster for many of the South African treats on their menu.
Sweet specialties include Oumas melktert (South African Milk tart), a traditional carrot cake, and a fluffy Maitjiesfontein traditional scone.
Pickers & Co also offers a Farm-House Kids’ High Tea for birthday parties.
Although we may have expected India to celebrate high tea due to English colonisation, renowned Indian-born chef Sabir Merchant only saw high tea for the first time as a chef at Palazzo Versace.
The owner of Garlic Clove and Green Olive Italian, Sabir toyed with the idea of making high tea from Indian cuisine.
However, it was Sabir’s wife, Dolly, also a chef, who brought the concept to life.
Garlic Clove’s Indian High Tea is served for two people as a three-course experience.
Firstly, India’s most popular street food, pani puri, arrives in individual glasses.
Then comes individual aloo tikki chaat.
Lastly, a 3-tier stand is served.
One tier carries sweets from throughout India, their colours, shapes and flavours so different from each other.
Another carries savoury food such as cocktail samosas, gujarrati dokla, momo, mini kebabs and Indian hash browns with tapioca pearls and peanuts, served with mint and tamarind sauces.
On the final tier lie Indian burgers, so popular in Mumbai, together with Indian sandwiches (a vegan high tea is also available by request).
“Our Indian High Tea is not just about remembering the food we grew up with,” Sabir tells us.
“It’s a celebration of Indian street food, but also about nostalgia – being with family and bringing back the feeling of being back in India.”
Providing guests with an exotic taste of the Middle East and Mediterranean, Mecca Bah (at Broadbeach and Hope Island) brings us food that is carefully curated, delicious and made with love.
Mecca Bah’s Middle Eastern High Tea Experience is served in a pyramid of savoury delights and sweet treats.
Many of the savoury dishes are also featured on the main menu, so this is a great way to try Middle Eastern food with friends as a celebration.
Mecca Bah’s high tea also includes an exquisite selection of Middle Eastern sweets, accompanied by a glass of sparkling on arrival, with unlimited tea and coffee.
Hudson & Rosie’s Table in Highland Park presents a true Aussie country high tea in rustic glory on their verandah.
Their delectable selection of sweet and savoury treats including homemade sliders, croquettes, arancini, deconstructed cheesecake and salted caramel banoffee with toffee popcorn is deliciously different to high tea offerings elsewhere.
It’s a selection that suits everyone, with all dietary requirements catered for on request.
All you need to do is gather your friends and book your event a day ahead.
Owned by siblings Bianca and Adam, at BonAppetea Teahouse, high tea encompasses dietary requirements, cultures, gender and age.
Bianca brings her passion for food and service to the high tea experience, making all the components by hand.
Not only do they serve a traditional Luxe high tea, but also fresh Breakfast High Tea and a Kids High Tea, all available as vegetarian, vegan or gluten free.
Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free high teas are also available at Greendays and Bumbles.
Not content with a quirky ‘Very GC’ high tea, QT Gold Coast also offers the only Man Tea in Australia.
Of course, this name is a misnomer.
Accompanying such gentlemanly delicacies as Moreton Bay Bug Roll is a Gentleman’s Éclair, Cheeseburger Dumplings, Maker’s Mark Smoked Pork Shoulder, Truffle and Parmesan Fries and a chocolate Cigar, filled with a Glenmorangie 10yr single malt whiskey mousse, candied bacon and lemon ash.
Getting the drift?
You can choose to wash your food down not with tea or coffee, but with a craft beer, Glenmorangie 10year or Johnnie Walker Blue.
And for the littlies, a Teeny High Tea is available at JW Marriott’s Chapter & Verse, QT, Greendays, Pickers & Co and BonAppetea.
Happy High Tea, everyone.

Located waterfront at Capri on Via Roma, Isla Cantina brings the fusion of traditional Mexican food with a Californian twist to the Gold Coast. Winter wonders
Meet Chef de Cuisine Manuele Erriu, the flavour-master behind the new Winter Menu at Bacchus Restaurant. Take note though, this isn’t a traditional winter dining experience. Manuele’s innovative menu pays tribute to his birthplace by the sea in Roseto degli Abruzzi, Italy, as well as championing the place he has called home for 10 years. It means that dining in Bacchus this winter will be an adventure, with flavours flying across his plates. bacchussouthbank.com.au | 07 3364 0837
LUNCH AT THE CHATEAU
At the time, $150 seemed so much (my pay packet in 1993 would have been lucky to top $250 a week), now it seems a pittance.
Regardless, it was a good investment and we both, fortuitously, recognised the fact.
My mate is fiscally much wiser than me.
He kept two of his, and sold one for a decent profit.
As for me, one bottle I swapped for a secondhand television, one I drank too early, and the last … I have no idea. Mine are defunct.
He is a friend who had the good grace to share his remnants with me. Thank you, Manny.
Chateau Latour always makes one of the most masculine of the Medoc wines, partly because of its place in the south of Pauillac (always powerful wines) hugging the banks of the Gironde river, and partly its relatively high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon.
But despite their relative weight and richness, they are polished, svelte wines with a great capacity to age.
In the best vintages Latour has a kind of brooding character, a depth that seems to elude the other great wines except perhaps Mouton Rothschild in some years.
I think we drank this bottle at the right time.
It still showed the magnificence of its youth, but also the complexities and undercurrents that only bottle-age can give, the earth, the antiqueshop, petrichor somewhere, lost in the muddle of everything else … grapes from one of the most hallowed vineyard sites on earth.
Now, there is one bottle left from the six we bought.
The only thing better than
good
wine? Great company to share it with.
THERE THE BOTTLE SAT, in the middle of a beautifully set table, with none of its expected majesty.
In fact, it looked quite forlorn; the label longgone, the cork fragmented to dust, everything about the package seemingly tired and wasted.
We had waited decades to open this rarity, and all of the visual clues looked abysmal.
Let’s face it, the wine was made from grapes plucked 33 years ago, and the bottle had travelled halfway around the world, to fester for most of its life in Queensland – hardly the most comforting of climates for wine to age with any semblance of grace. But the contents, resting in a decanter, were as lively as a gymnast.
Coloured like a sultan’s ruby tinged with terracotta, it promised the world.
And so it should have, as it was a legendary bottle – the 1990 Chateau Latour.
On release it received perfect scores from most of the critics, and near-perfect from the rest.
It was the pinnacle Bordeaux from an incredible vintage, and its value had gone from the seemingly exorbitant $150 we paid in perhaps 1993, to anywhere between $2,000 and $3,000 today … if you can find it.
I had gone halves with a friend in a half-dozen, purchased en-primeur (which in wine-speak means you pay for the wine before it leaves its winery, but you get it at a reduced price).
In Bordeaux the en-primeur campaign is both a measure and a manipulator of each chateau’s reputation, guided by the critics and track records.
Which brings me to the crux of this diatribe. Wine, and anything collectible, keepable, that changes over time, has a dimension to it that other consumables (foie-gras, beer, white-truffles, gin, a meal at Vue de Monde or La Tour d’Argent, the world’s best massage) can’t match.
And that is the joy of possession.
Another friend of mine has one of the most impressive wine collections on the planet.
But his wine collection pales (fiscally and figuratively) next to his museum of teas.
His pleasure, in both tea and wine, is to collect, to enjoy the ownership and to curate those possessions.
Then to share them – after many years of basking in the light of possessing – with friends … which is the culmination.
Choosing the right moment (a year too early and you’ve missed the bulls-eye; a year too late and the wine could be buggered), the right company, the right setting and right food are as much a part of the puzzle and enjoyment as the wine itself.
I’ve been collecting wine on a much more humble scale for more than 30 years.
I love looking at the bottles, pondering when to open them and with whom, and – finally – pouring them into a glass and seeing how close to the bulls-eye I’ve landed.
I’ve missed as many times as I’ve succeeded, but even when missing I have the consolation of years, maybe decades, of the pleasure of ownership.
And in the case of this particular 1990 Latour I missed the ownership (because of my own stupidity), but I was a pillion passenger for its journey over three decades, and a very, very willing (and grateful) partaker in its ultimate demise.
And the circumstance of getting together with good friends over a long lunch was an event of greater significance than the popping of a crumbling cork (no matter the splendour of the brand emblazoned on said cork).
The memories of that day are likely to stay with me longer than the already-faded recollection of the taste of the Latour, and I am comforted by the fact that the 1990 Chateau Latour gave us all the joy of expectation (which, in my case, began several days before the lunch), and provided an incredible focal point for the afternoon.
So … how was the wine?
As I’ve already said, it’s colour was amazing. Ruby and terracotta.
After an hour in the decanter, it began to smell like the legend it is; warm-brick, definite petrichor, antique-shop (French polish on topquality old oak), herb, gravel and … wine.
It was heady, intoxicating, and for the moments I could escape the babble of conversation I would lose myself in its complexities.
The taste, definitive Bordeaux; clean, ripe, succulent, but with gravel-like tannins, a richness tempered by a taut framework of acid and tannin, and so, so many layers of flavour.
Did it justify the current price tag and its massive reputation? You bet. Justified and then some.
But my assessment is skewed by the memories of buying the wine, the stories surrounding it, the years spent waiting for it, the excitement of finally opening it, and the people who shared it with me.
Which is precisely why we buy wine, why we keep it and ponder it.
Great wine is as much about the journey as it is the finish.
Did I mention there is one bottle left?

CLOSE ENCOUNTER
IN MY ROLE AS EDITOR I am often offered amazing opportunities.
This was the case recently when I was invited to join a group of journalists onboard P&O’s Pacific Encounter for a short cruise to the Whitsundays. Departing Brisbane, the four-night itinerary saw us head up the coast to Airlie Beach before returning to the home port.
I’ve been on a few cruises over the years but to be honest I’d never considered doing one in my own backyard.
I can see now that was a massive oversight on my part.
The convenience of driving just an hour up the road to board the ship, the fact there were no flights or currency conversions to worry about and the ability to just unpack once made this a very easy – and very enjoyable – break away.
Our hosts had organised a pretty busy schedule but we still had plenty of time to relax in our cabin, sit by the pool or meet up in one of the many lounge areas for a chat.
That’s another beauty of cruising … you can choose to do as much or as little as you want.
The first night ‘Sailaway’ party set the scene for the next few days as guests young and old relaxed into holiday mode.
We joined in the festivities and enjoyed a welcome drink as the sun set and the lights of the city faded into the background.
A 4-night cruise through the pristine waters of the Whitsundays is the perfect way to ward off the winter blues.
The next morning the ‘work’ started in earnest with a private Galley Tour.
It was a lesson in the logistics behind feeding such a huge number of guests at sea and I have a newfound appreciation for the hardworking chefs.
As a media group we did have access to a few things like this that aren’t available to the general public including a meet and greet with the entertainment cast and a visit to the bridge (amazing views and the captain was charm personified).
However, most of the activities we took part in were included in your fare or offered at a small additional cost.
As you would expect, with 21 dining options to choose from including The Pantry, Dragon Lady and Angelo’s, we were treated to a number of standout meals.
The high-tea experience at Luke’s Bar & Grill was a definite highlight, while being serenaded by our waiter during dinner at Waterfront Restaurant was another special moment.
Of course it wouldn’t be a cruise without a cocktail or two and we got a head-start in this area with a Mixology class in The Bonded Store.
This cosy and quirky bar could easily be found in a trendy Melbourne alleyway or tucked away in downtown New York.
A word of advice, if you ever find yourself here order the signature Smoked Negroni.
While it may be an acquired taste, the spectacle as they smoke the concoction in front of you is nothing short of breathtaking.
For a more jazz-filled vibe you can head to the Blue Room, or if you prefer a casual atmosphere try The Encounter Bar.
This was a popular spot for our group to reconvene after our various activities with the Karaoke sessions a particular favourite.
I cannot hold a tune to save myself so I have the utmost respect for those who can (and those who can’t but are still willing to give it a go).
It’s impossible to watch these brave souls belt out their favourite songs and not walk away with a smile on your face.
So we’ve covered food and drink … what about entertainment?
With 10 bars and nightclubs, as well as two theatre venues on board, you are spoilt for choice.
The Marquee theatre is currently home to three spectacular stage shows – Seven, ONE and Musicology.
These all-singing, all-dancing, all-ages performances are free, and certainly rate right up there in terms of production values.
The ticketed adults-only Blanc de Blanc Uncorked show in the Black Circus venue is definitely not for the faint-hearted, however, I can honestly say I have not laughed so much in a very long time. >>
We also had a couple of special themed nights during our cruise and it was great to see so many guests dressing up and getting into the spirit.
The Gatsby evening was an extremely elegant affair, while the Bianco Party proved a complete white-out, with guests partying on the deck until all hours (although I was safely tucked up in bed by midnight, I promise).
The crew also host a wide range of activities such as comedy nights, bingo sessions, trivia games, craft classes and health workshops.
You just need to check the onboard newsletter, Good Times, which is delivered to your cabin daily, for details.
I must admit I was disappointed I missed out on the first morning’s craft class because some of the 1920’s-style headpieces I saw that evening were stunning … and while I did attend the macrame lesson later in the cruise, my results weren’t nearly as impressive.
If you want to work off all the calories you’ve consumed there is a fully equipped gym on board with regular F45 classes, or if you prefer to reduce your stress levels I suggest doing as I did and heading to Elemis Day Spa on Deck 15 for a relaxing massage treatment.
Little ones are well taken care of as well with a dedicated kid’s club, family friendly movies on the big screen and the P&O Edge Encounter Park complete with the ‘Twin Racer’ – a first-of-its-kind dual racing waterslide where family and friends can challenge each other to score the fastest time.
If you are lucky enough to be staying in one of the stylish suites and mini suites, you also have exclusive-access to The Byron Beach Club, a private retreat with its own pool, whirlpool spas and cabana seating.
As this was a short cruise, we only had one day in port … but what a day it was.
After the ship dropped anchor off Airlie Beach early in the morning, we were taken ashore by tender, then transferred to one of Ocean Rafting’s high-speed semi-rigid inflatable vessels.
Before we knew it, we were flying over the water, ‘chucking donuts’ and having a ball.
After an adrenaline-inducing 40-minute boat ride through the spectacular Whitsunday Passage followed, before we anchored in a beautiful deserted cove to explore the reef.
The prestine water was a very pleasant 23 degrees and while I didn’t join the others to go snorkelling, I did enjoy a relaxing swim.
Next stop was a nearby sand island where we enjoyed a packed lunch and caught our breath before reboarding the vessel for another actionpacked ride back to Airlie.
A big shout out to our 19-year-old skipper Heath and his first mate Emily, who took such good care of us and ensured we had a truly memorable day out on the water.
While this onshore excursion was definitely a highlight, I absolutely loved my entire journey on Pacific Encounter.
But what really struck me was how happy and friendly the crew were.
These people work incredibly long hours to make sure guests enjoy their time on board and, I’m happy to report, in my case they definitely succeeded.

I always welcome the end of financial year. It offers the opportunity to make a fresh start, but not before reflecting on what has gone before.
The Gold Coast prestige real estate sector has performed relatively well in the past 12 months, despite the Reserve Bank delivering continued interest rate rises.
The price gap between buyers and sellers has finally found equilibrium and while median house prices remain well above pre-Covid levels, they now offer a more accurate reflection of the current market.
One thing that has remained unchanged is stock levels. Property listings are at record lows, with uncertainty around further rate rises keeping those who don’t have to move firmly in situ.
Yet overall migration to the South East is rising fast, with the demand for quality homes continuing to outstrip supply, particularly in favourable beachside and riverfront locations. In response, buyers have broadened their geographical remits, leading to a number of successful sales in traditionally less prominent suburbs, including a recent record price set in the leafy northern locale of Parkwood.
Overall for Kollosche, the year has been memorable for a number of reasons, including the premium sales results
achieved for its clients, its contribution to the community through its Community Fund and the overall expansion of the company, which you can read more about in this edition of the magazine.
One achievement that warrants special mention is the Kollosche People’s Ball held at the end of May. Bringing out the best in the Gold Coast community, the event raised a total of $820,000 for local charity Serving Our People, whose services have helped more than 55,000 people in need.
Being able to give back to the local communities in which we live and work is, in itself, something of which we can all be extremely proud this financial year.
“The 2022-23 financial year has been memorable for many reasons.”
MICHAEL KOLLOSCHE
Beauty Statement ON THE COVER
In the hinterland at Tallai, on the outskirts of the Gold Coast, this statement residence is putting a majestic spin on farmhouse living.
Spread across two acres, ‘The Fontaine’ was built by Metricon and took three years to complete. A supreme version of its Signature range, the home won ‘Best in Class’ at the 2021 Master Builders Queensland Housing & Construction Awards.
The first time to market since its completion, a buyer will be the first to enjoy all that the luxury property has to offer.
An impressive bamboo-lined driveway leading to a grand porte-cochere is a mere
taster of the sophisticated features primed to impress once beyond the front door.
Unwind across a number of expansive living and entertaining spaces, including the master suite, which can be warmed by a stone fireplace on cold winter evenings.
Other highlights include a sizeable alfresco, resort-style swimming pool with adjoining pavilion, and separate guest house or teenagers’ retreat.
The Fontaine is being exclusively marketed by Sam Guo and Julia Kuo, and will go to auction on Saturday, 19 August at 11am.
LEAPS AND BOUNDS
The end of the financial year is a time for reflection for most businesses. For leading prestige property agency Kollosche, the 2022-23 financial year has been memorable for the results achieved for its clients, its contribution to the community, and overall expansion of the company.
With a growing team now numbering 140, Kollosche’s expanded service offering spans residential, commercial and off-the-plan sales, as well as leasing and property management.
Innovation remains at the forefront of the company’s ethos, with the addition of K Property Insights, a new headquarters, and a bold new brand look among the year’s achievements.
WORDS: JANELLE ESTREICH
COMMUNITY FIRST
With a percentage of every sale going to the Kollosche Community Fund, the company has been able to support a wide range of charities, causes and sporting groups this past year.
The annual Kollosche People’s Ball in May achieved a staggering $820,000 for Serving Our People, whose services have to date reached more than 55,000 people in need.
During the 2022-23 financial year, Kollosche is also proud to have donated funds to Kurrawa Surf Club, Broadbeach Cats, Gold Coast Suns, The Salvation Army, Baby Give Back, SeaWorld Foundation, St John’s Crisis Centre, QLD Police, Rosies, and Rize Up.
NEW BRAND REVEAL
In March, Kollosche unveiled a striking new brand across print, digital, and social media platforms following a year of rigorous planning.
The brief was to build a brand that transcended real estate in recognition of Kollosche’s mission to operate as strategic advisors rather than traditional sales agents.
The result was a sleek, timeless aesthetic that now carries across every point of Kollosche’s marketing – from signboards and billboards, to print advertisements, social media content, video promotions, and brochures. This powerful new brand not only benefits Kollosche but every client and property asset it represents.
MICHAEL KOLLOSCHE AND JAMIE HARRISONFINANCIAL YEAR REVIEW
SERVICE EXPANSION
Over the past year, Kollosche has continued to expand its service offering beyond residential and commercial sales, leasing, and property management.
Kollosche New Projects officially launched this year with a talented team of 10 sales advisors and administrative support staff, led by Head of New Projects Jamie Harrison. The team specialises in off-theplan sales, while providing an end-to-end solution for developers.
Also in 2023, Kollosche launched inhouse research arm K Property Insights, which provides a comprehensive review of the Queensland property market within exclusive monthly and quarterly reports.
To help inform their real estate decisions, buyers, sellers, investors, and developers have the latest in-depth expert analysis and market data delivered direct to their inboxes.
The company’s customer service experience is further enhanced in 2023 with the launch of Kollosche Concierge, which allows the business to better understand and nurture the long-term needs of its clients.
KOLLOSCHE HQ
Having set up shop on Albert Avenue with a team of nine in 2019, rapid growth led to Kollosche relocating to new custom-fitted premises on Level 2, Oracle West, 19 Elizabeth Avenue in September 2022.
The state-of-the-art space provides an inspiring hub that facilitates close collaboration between sales agents, administration, legal, finance professionals, and marketing.
Three executive boardrooms are fitted with the latest technology, while a large front reception and shared multi-purpose areas cater for workshops, launch events, and even in-room auctions.
