The ca mpus-w ide celebrat ion of 50 yea rs of women at Not re Da me ca me to its close Monday evening w it h a pa nel discussion bet ween f ive women who have bot h w it nessed a nd enacted cha nge towa rd women’s empowerment. Each pa nelist was selected for her unique perspect ive a nd cont ribut ion to t he t ri-ca mpus communit y. The pa nel was broken into four sect ions t hat t raced t he evolut ion of women on ca mpus.
On the west side of campus — bordered by St. Mar y’s Lake, Pangborn Hall and Lake Lot — lies a building w ith t wo distinct purposes. The second f loor of West Lake Hall holds dy namic classroom spaces, computer labs offices and display areas for design programs in the College of Arts and Letters. Within Arts and Letters, Notre Dame offers industrial design or v isual communication design majors for those interested in design. They also offer a collaborative innovation minor. Yet, West Lake Hall does not just ser ve as an academic building; it also ser ves as an integral way of ser v ing the South Bend communit y. The first f loor of West Lake hall contains classrooms and offices for the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO Programs, guiding South Bend students as they progress through middle school, high school and the college application process. TRIO college access and preparator y programs: Talent Search and Upward Bound. Notre Dame’s TRIO Talent Search program was established in 1980, originally housed in Grace Hall. They expanded into West Lake and now ser ve around 750 students from grades seventh to t welfth. Students come from v irtually ever y communit y school in South Bend. Talesha Redding, an adv isor for Talent Search, said the program prepares students for secondar y education by offering tutoring and class mentorship. They also instill positive study habits and assist students through the college admissions process by helping them nav igate FAFSA and applications, she said. Redding works mostly w ith students at John Adams High School. “We prepare workshops each week for each grade level. We also make contact w ith each student and plan events for all of them,” she said. see WEST LAKE PAGE 5
