OUR LATEST SKY BET LEAGUE ONE FIXTURE TAKING PLACE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS SEES IPSWICH TOWN VISITING FRATTON PARK THIS AFTERNOON

L

ast weekend was a traumatic one for all of us who love Pompey. Firstly, there was the huge frustration of not being able to retain the EFL Trophy at Wembley and it was particularly galling to lose on penalties, although we have to congratulate Salford for their victory. Then there was the departure of Kenny Jackett as manager after almost four years in charge and we, of course, wish him every success for the future. Our attention quickly turned to potential replacements and I’m delighted to welcome Danny Cowley and his brother Nicky to the club. Our thoughts are firmly on the next seven weeks and I’m

personally very excited about what this period could bring. All I would ask is for everyone to come together and be united. We’re still in a fantastic position and want to ensure we have the best possible chance of achieving success. It’s a tough game for them to start this afternoon. Ipswich are a fantastic club with a great manager – someone we all know very well and who I have the utmost respect for. While this one match won’t necessarily define the rest of the season, a positive result would be an excellent springboard for us to build on during the following 11 fixtures. In any case, we remain steadfast in our desire to achieve promotion. I would like to congratulate Ronan Curtis on his latest call-up to the Republic of Ireland national team. While we’re naturally disappointed not to have him available at Shrewsbury next Saturday, it’s another great opportunity for him to impress on the world stage.

OUR THOUGHTS ARE FIRMLY ON THE NEXT SEVEN WEEKS AND I’M PERSONALLY VERY EXCITED ABOUT WHAT THIS PERIOD COULD BRING Finally, a warm welcome to Ipswich’s directors following their trip down to the south coast, as well as Paul Cook and his staff and players. Stay safe and, as always, PUP! Mark Catlin Chief Executive

NOTICEBOARD IRELAND CALL FOR CURTIS Ronan Curtis has been named in the Republic of Ireland squad for their forthcoming international fixtures. Stephen Kenny's side face Serbia and Luxembourg in World Cup qualifiers next week, then take on Qatar in a friendly. Curtis' inclusion in the squad means he will be absent for Pompey in their League One match at Shrewsbury next Saturday.

BIRTHDAY WISHES Happy 50th Birthday, Dad! Lots of love from Stanley xxx

POMPEY v IPSWICH

t is the beginning of a new era Iappointment at Fratton Park following the of Danny Cowley as the club’s first new boss for approaching four years.

The former Lincoln and Huddersfield manager has taken charge until the end of the season and will be assisted by his younger brother Nicky. It comes following last weekend’s departure of Kenny Jackett, who twice guided the Blues to the playoffs, as well as EFL Trophy glory in 2019. And fans will be hoping the switch can inspire a turnaround in form, with a midweek defeat at Peterborough seeing the side who led the division at Christmas slipping down to 10th in the table. While most of the talk on Portsea Island has been about Pompey’s managerial situation, there will be a familiar face in the opposition dugout this afternoon. Paul Cook famously led the Blues to the League Two title in portsmouthfc.co.uk

2016/17, snatching the silverware from Plymouth and Doncaster’s grasp on the final day. Following a spell with Wigan, he was appointed by the Tractor Boys earlier this month after the exit of Paul Lambert. They were in eighth position at the time and have since climbed up one spot to seventh in the standings. But the club are still a point outside the play-off places and Pompey know they can leapfrog their opponents with victory today. Having dropped out of the Premier League at the end of the 2001/02 campaign, the men from Suffolk spent 17 consecutive seasons in English football’s second tier. But they were relegated again a couple of years ago, ensuring they would compete at their current level for the first time since the 1950s. It seemed as though it would be a brief stay and with 27 games played last term, Ipswich sat at the 08

League One summit. But their form dipped dramatically from that point and despite the Covid-19 pandemic ensuring only nine more matches would be completed, they eventually finished down in 11th position. The side also made a bright start to the present campaign, but again saw results tail off and they dropped out of the play-off picture over the Christmas period. Like the Fratton faithful, their supporters will now be hoping the introduction of a new man in the dug-out can provide the inspiration for a climb back into the top six. The Tractor Boys have enjoyed six wins on their league travels so far, enjoying success at Bristol Rovers (2-0), Blackpool (4-1), Plymouth (2-1), Burton (1-0), Hull (1-0) and Accrington (2-1). But Pompey have already secured two victories at Portman Road this season and will be eager to complete a hat-trick this afternoon. @Pompey

his managerial career with Southport. He then enjoyed cup success with Irish side Sligo and had a spell in charge back at Stanley before helping Chesterfield become champions of the fourth tier.

MANAGER

That earned Cook a switch to Fratton Park and after suffering play-off heartache at the end of his first campaign, a 6-1 victory over Cheltenham saw them dramatically snatch the silverware on the final day of the following season.

Cook, of course, needs no introduction to Pompey fans, having memorably guided the side to the 2016/17 League Two title.

He soon left for Wigan, where more promotion success was achieved, but departed following their relegation from the Championship and was appointed by Ipswich at the start of the month.

They were totally dominant in the first half and the deadlock was broken when Williams completed a fine passing move that also involved Andy Cannon, Marcus Harness and John Marquis. And the same player doubled the lead just before the break, drilling home after Tom Naylor’s long ball had been flicked on by Ronan Curtis. There were chances to make the lead more emphatic following the interval, but Marquis and Curtis both rattled the crossbar, while David

England international centre-back Beattie was voted Ipswich’s ‘Player of the Year’ in two consecutive seasons. He turned professional in July 1971 and was named ‘PFA Young Player of the Year’ in 1973/74. Forming a productive partnership with Allan Hunter, he helped the club lift the FA Cup in 1978 and netted 32 goals in 296 appearances before a knee injury halted his top-flight playing career. After unsuccessful comeback bids at Colchester and Middlesbrough, Beattie had spells with several Norwegian sides, then appeared for Barnet and Clacton. He worked in the licensed trade and died in September 2018. ERIC GATES Striker Gates starred in the Tractor Boys’ 1981 UEFA Cup final triumph and was capped twice by England. The younger brother of Middlesbrough centre-half Bill Gates, he turned professional with Ipswich in October 1972 and helped them secure the FA portsmouthfc.co.uk

Youth Cup in 1973. He struck 96 times in 384 games before joining Sunderland in August 1985 and was an influential figure as they won promotion in 1987/88 and 1989/90. Moving to Carlisle in the summer June 1990, he later assisted Hartlepool, Newton Aycliffe, Staindrop and West Auckland. Gates then worked for Century FM North East radio prior to becoming a pig farmer. TERRY BUTCHER Three Lions central defender Butcher – who featured at three World Cups – earned 45 of his 77 caps during his time with Ipswich. Penning professional terms in August 1976, he formed a notable partnership with Russell Osman and starred in the 1981 UEFA Cup final triumph. He scored 21 goals in 351 outings before being sold to Rangers for £650,000 in the summer of 1986 and was a key figure in Scottish league and cup successes. Appointed Coventry’s player/boss in November 1990, Butcher has since managed Sunderland, Motherwell, Sydney, Brentford, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Hibernian, Newport County and the Philippines national team. JASON DOZZELL England U21 midfielder Dozzell starred as the Tractor Boys claimed the Division Two title in 1991/92. He turned professional with hometown club Ipswich in December 1984 and also featured as they reached the second tier play-offs in 1986/87. Sold to Tottenham for £1.5 million in the summer of 1993, he briefly returned to Portman Road in October 1997 and struck 73 goals in 416 matches overall. Dozzell moved to Northampton 11

two months later and helped them go close to securing promotion in 1997/98. Signing for Colchester in October 1998, he then appeared for Canvey Island and later managed Ipswich Wanderers and Leiston. RICHARD WRIGHT

Goalkeeper Wright was voted Ipswich’s ‘Player of the Year’ in 2008/09 and capped twice by England. Signing professional terms at Portman Road in January 1995, he was ever-present on three occasions and starred as they reached the top-flight in 1999/2000. He helped them qualify for the UEFA Cup the following season and earned a £6 million switch to Arsenal in the summer of 2001. Understudy to David Seaman during their 2001/02 ‘double’ success, Wright immediately left for Everton, then moved, via West Ham, back to the Tractor Boys in July 2008. He briefly returned for a third spell from Sheffield United in November 2011, making 362 appearances overall for the club. @Pompey

A KNIGHT’S TALE ALAN KNIGHT MADE 801 APPEARANCES FOR POMPEY AND IS NOW CLUB AMBASSADOR won three promotions during Iplayer my 20-plus years as a Pompey – and all of them came

in the same decade. In addition, I only suffered two relegations, although it has to be said that when I made my debut at Rotherham as a teenager, we had already long since been consigned to the drop into Division Four. That trio of successes in 801 appearances for the club doesn’t seem an awful lot, while just a couple of demotions is a rather good stat. But as I pointed out recently, it all meant that I spent 16 seasons in the same division – which these days is known as the Championship. Indeed, long before my career started, the Blues had already assumed the mantle of a regular second tier side following the glory years just after the war. All that being said, it gives us no divine right of competing at

that level, despite what some people might think. I listened to some pre-match analysis of our game at Bristol Rovers last month and the general impression seemed to be that if we got at our opponents and scored the inevitable early goal, then a comfortable evening would surely follow. Similarly, the following home fixtures against Blackpool and Gillingham had to be won if promotion was to be secured. Take it from someone who knows from personal experience, it is that sort of attitude that winds up any team who are expected to play the role of lambs to the slaughter. When Alan Ball’s side reached the top-flight at the third time of asking (take note all those who are currently angry about the failed League One promotion attempts), we were very much seen as the whipping boys. But every so often, we would

bite back. Wins at Norwich, Tottenham and, of course, Southampton were remainders there are no guarantees. You could sense when the opposition were either slightly off the boil or taking us less than seriously and rubbing their hands about the easy time they would have. Yes, we ultimately went down with a bit of a whimper, but still maintained our professional pride and ran big clubs like Manchester United and Everton close, while we drew with Arsenal. Irrespective of form and confidence, nobody is willing to accept a role as cannon fodder. So if any supporter is assuming we will simply turn up and win a particular game, then just remember that each side starts on an equal footing with 11 men. You have to work hard to earn victories and nobody deserves to be in any division other than the one they currently reside in.

ON THIS DAY MARCH

20 1948 Jimmy Scoular (above) scored his first goal for Pompey, with a fortuitous effort enough to secure victory in a topflight clash with Manchester City at Fratton Park.

1971 Eoin Hand and Nick Jennings were on target for the Blues in their second division victory over bottom club Charlton on home soil.

1982 Trevor Senior made his Football League debut in Pompey’s 1-1 draw with Fulham, with Billy Rafferty’s opener cancelled out by a late Kevin Lock penalty.

2010 Late goals from Jamie O’Hara (above) and Kanu saw the Blues turn a 2-1 deficit into a dramatic 3-2 top-flight success against Hull – although they would enjoy just one more league win that season.

2012 Chris Maguire, David Norris, Kelvin Etuhu and Marko Futacs all netted, as Pompey battled from behind to thrash Birmingham 4-1 in a Championship contest at Fratton Park.

DID YOU KNOW? Alan Knight featured 53 times for Pompey in the League Cup, with no player making more portsmouthfc.co.uk @Pompey appearances for the club in that competition. 17

MOORE’S MEMORIES HAD HATELEY ENDURED A TEMPORARY SPELL ELSEWHERE IN ORDER TO PROVE HIMSELF, WHO KNOWS QUITE HOW MUCH HISTORY WOULD HAVE BEEN REWRITTEN was one of the fortunate Isanctum few inside Paul Cook’s inner on the night the manager

likely, I know, seeing as he had already dropped down a division to join the Blues.

was musing over his central defensive options. Coincidentally, I had already written that first sentence before he had even been appointed the new manager of today’s opponents.

But had such a transition occurred, it is likely the striker would not have appeared on England’s radar for a trip to South America and scored a headed goal against Brazil that catapulted him to worldwide fame.

Among a host of topics discussed over post-match bottles of beer, one conversation centred on the qualities of Matt Clarke and Adam Webster, and who was the better prospect.

That came at the end of his first – and only – season at Fratton Park, earning a £1 million move to AC Milan. As well as missing out on that, he might never have experienced the joys of hitting back-to-back hat-tricks against Cambridge and Grimsby or formed a swashbuckling partnership with Alan Biley.

At the end of that campaign, the latter – still on his way to becoming a formidable player – was sold to Ipswich, while the former moved the other way on a permanent deal. Webster has since become a rock at the heart of Brighton’s defence in the Premier League, while Clarke, having signed for the same club, is out on loan at a struggling Derby side in the Championship. It is just shy of two years since Clarke moved from one part of the south coast to the other, setting up the intriguing prospect of two former Pompey men becoming defensive partners in English football’s elite division. But he has yet to make a competitive appearance for the Sussex outfit, having immediately been sent out on loan to Derby, where he has been lodging ever since. Webster, meanwhile, is established with the Seagulls and looks comfortable in his elevated surroundings. portsmouthfc.co.uk

Okay, we might not have seen the subsequent signing of Scott McGarvey either, but that is a subject for another day. The craziness of such transactions is highlighted by several possible scenarios at present. Brighton could perhaps get relegated, manager Graham Potter leaves and the incoming boss has to cut costs and preside over a cull of players. Then Clarke, who would have officially become a Premier League player in 2019 and dreamt of appearing at the highest level, never gets to do so – unless, of course, he moves elsewhere. Consider this, if you will. Mark Hateley signed for Pompey for a club record fee in the summer of 1983. Imagine if he had then been loaned out to prove himself – not 19

Had Hateley endured a temporary spell elsewhere in order to prove himself, who knows quite how much history would have been rewritten. Fortunately, such absurd rules of business had yet to be engineered and when a club bought a player, it was a proven asset, not a future possibility. In less than the time Clarke has spent as a ‘Premier League player’, Hateley became an international performer, starring for Italian giants and with a million-pound price tag on his head. Now that is certainly an interesting chat for the inner sanctum. @Pompey

FROM THE ARCHIVE

THE POMPEY HISTORY SOCIETY TAKE A DELVE INTO THE CLUB’S ARCHIVE, PULL OUT A DOCUMENT OR ARTEFACT AND TELL THE STORY BEHIND IT. IN THIS ISSUE, WE HAVE DUG OUT A FLYER FROM 1973 WHICH SUGGESTED THE FANS NEEDED ANOTHER SONG. AS IF THE POMPEY CHIMES WERE SOMEHOW NOT ENOUGH… 1973? Wasn’t that the year John Deacon became chairman? You know your stuff! Yes, it was. He had acquired a stake in the financially and sportingly struggling club the previous December, providing funds to sign a couple of players – Norwich’s Ken Foggo and a return for the popular Bobby Kellard – to keep the team in Division Two. At the end of the season he completed his takeover of the club, promising to revolutionise it and get the side out of the second tier. Peee-ter Mari-nellooo… You’re older than you look. Yes, the George Best look-a-like Arsenal winger arrived for £100,000 in May 1973, while the Southampton striker Ron Davies cost another £40,000 and Bristol Rovers’ defender Phil Roberts £55,000. Exciting times... So what’s a song got to do with anything? With the introduction of new money to the club, there came a price. Traditional blue shirts? Nah! In came a snazzy white top with blue trim and two vertical blue stripes down the left (modelled in the photo by Roberts). Younger fans might remember the nod to that kit with our second strip in 2009/10. And the Pompey Chimes were under threat by a ‘Song for Pompey’ competition for fans organised by The News in association with the club. That was a great time for music. Something inspired by the Beatles, Stones or Bowie even? Errr. No. The winning entry, penned by a Mr M Benfield of Paulsgrove, was inspired by the traditional ditty the Camptown Races. Here goes: Who’s the team who play the best? Pompey. Pompey. Who’s the team to beat the rest? Pompey all the way... Enough! I get the drift. Did it catch on? No is the short answer. This flyer was given out in the first programme of the 1973/74 season against Middlesbrough. Pompey lost 1-0. Deacon was true to his word as well. By 1976 those white-shirted Blues were out of the second division. Alas, that was by relegation to the third… Thanks to Chris Gibbs for his help with the compilation of this article.

STEVE BONE’S

VIEW FROM THE NORTH STAND ne of the most popular O features I’ve raised in this column in recent seasons has

been my ‘Football Room 101’, into which readers have been invited to place anything about the modern-day game they don't like. The emphasis was on the frivolous, not the serious, so while I didn’t allow simulation or overpaid players, I did admit into the room corner takers who don’t place the ball in the quadrant, linesmen who let them get away with it and Wycombe Wanderers. I feel now’s a good time for a new round of 101. Why? Because we have been watching lockdown football for exactly a year, that’s why. It has now been 10 days more than a whole year since Fratton Park was last full-ish for a game. In that time, we have had to get used to watching from afar and viewing football on TVs and mobile phones only or listening on the radio. And even then, only ‘elite’ football has carried on – no way has been found to fund matches from Southern League level downwards, which is a great shame. So what elements do you not like? Many people will probably be keen to put fake crowd noise into ‘Lockdown Football Room 101’, but my first item is one step removed from that. I actually don’t mind recorded crowd noise – I have got used to it – but what I can’t bear is when it doesn’t quite align with what we're seeing. I am not party to how the sounds of a crowd are brought to us during a live game, but I have heard it done well, so it is clearly possible to make it sound portsmouthfc.co.uk

IS IT JUST ME WHO MISSES A HUGE LONG-LASTING CHEER WHEN THE REFEREE FALLS OVER? genuine. So why do we sometimes have to watch a goal being scored and the crowd cheering about five seconds later? Furthermore, why can’t we have more specific chants included? Is it just me who misses hearing a big home crowd all say ‘corner’ when the ball goes out for a corner or a huge long-lasting cheer when the referee falls over? We’re missing out and a few of these favourites would make us feel much more at home. Something else for my ‘LF Room 101’ is early evening kick-offs. What is the point of games starting at 6pm or even 7pm? I realise no fans have to get home from work and out again to get there, but don’t the authorities know I like to watch Jules and the panel bringing us the action on the midweek Soccer Special, and I’ve not even had my tea when 26

half the matches are well into the second half? I always used to think 7.30pm was a good time for midweek fixtures, but in the past few years, I have come to accept 7.45pm, now a more frequently-used start time. Anything before 7.30pm is too early. As for 6pm kick-offs, well, why don’t they just play in the afternoon and be home in time for Countdown? Yes, there are bigger issues to deal with in the beautiful game in 2021, but I’m happy to leave others to debate those. So now it’s your turn. What aspects of lockdown football go into ‘Room 101’ for you? Is it perhaps the sponsored bus shelters that Premier League managers do their post-match interviews in or the fact that Lineker and Co aren’t as entertaining on Match of the Day as they were in those ‘Top 10’ programmes they did when there was no football?
