Always a popular ski and snowboarding destination, Steamboat is high on the list for winter adventurers. Whether you’re traveling as a family or with a group of friends, Steamboat has the mountain and the small town to keep you busy.
Trailhead Lodge is an ideal place to stay, with condos offered in a hotellike setting. You take an elevator up to your floor, follow the hall to your unit, and your own doorway opens up into a spacious kitchen with dining table and living room, flanked by two separate bedrooms. This layout can easily sleep a group of six, with each bedroom having a king bed with separate bathrooms and the foldout sofa in the living room sleeping an additional two. You’ll love the three-tiered hot tubs and heated pool offered on the ground floor, off the fitness center; and kids will also love the game room that features both traditional games and video gaming. Either of these offer the perfect way to wind down after a day on the mountain. But what you might love most about Trailhead Lodge is the ease of walking right out the front door and catching the gondola up to the ski resort. It really doesn’t get any easier!

» At “gondola center” (top of the gondola), you’ll be in the middle of the resort, where you can pick up your rental equipment at any Steamboat Ski & Sport location. Make sure to pick up your rentals upon arrival so you are ready for skiing in the morning. You’ll also want to purchase your lift tickets and Outlaw Mountain Coaster ride vouchers at any ticketing location. » Steamboat has produced a record amount of winter Olympians and their special training facility hosts competitions that can be seen from the lifts. Enjoy perusing U.S. Olympic history through photos and written stories at the mid-mountain cafeteria. » Activities abound at Steamboat, including Old Town Hot Springs, Strawberry Park Hot Springs (a little off the beaten path), art installations, museums and plenty of boutiques. » Steamboat Springs has its own small airport, Hayden Airport. You might choose to fly into Hayden versus flying into Denver Airport and driving over.
EATS » Start a full day of skiing with a hearty breakfast at Timber & Torch at the base of the mountain. An array of eggs Benedict, omelettes or avocado toast will be exactly what you need to fuel a day in the powder. » On the mountain, you’ll find a few cafeterias to choose from where you can take a break with a hot bowl of chili or a slice of pizza. Anyone skiing all day appreciates a lunch break mid-mountain! » After a full day of skiing, no one wants to cook. Salt & Lime is a spicy Mexican café where you can either dine in or (my recommendation), call in your order, pick it up and eat in the comfort of your condo. You can choose from an array of burritos, tacos and don’t forget the fresh guac! One of the most helpful assets of Trailhead Lodge is the hop-on/hop-off shuttle that can take you to any of the town’s restaurants. Simply call ahead and they’ll arrive to drive you to dinner.
