When Should You Visit

New Zealand? By Alicia Saba, The Splendid Traveler

New Zealand has four distinct seasons all offering something special, and there isn’t a bad time to visit. Situated in the far south of the Southern Hemisphere, the country’s seasons are the reverse of those in North America, with the South Island experiencing more pronounced seasonal differences than the North Island. New Zealand is a destination that is all about taking advantage of the spectacular landscapes the country has to offer, and with each of its four distinct seasons offering something special, there isn’t a bad time to visit. Here is a rundown of what you can expect.

Summer (December-February) The New Zealand summer is a time of warm temperatures and clear skies, ideal for relaxing at the beach, or venturing into the country’s magnificent national parks. The cycling and hiking trails are at their driest and long daylight hours mean there’s more time to enjoy them. The average high temperature in the summer ranges from 70 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the country.

New Zealand’s sun is stronger than many other parts of the world, so it is very important to wear sunscreen year-round, but especially if you visit in summer.

Summer coincides with peak tourist season, particularly from midDecember to late January, when hotels and luxury lodges can book

up over a year in advance. Prices for both accommodation and airfare are at their highest, and you can expect crowds all over the country. If you’re hoping to get a permit for any of New Zealand’s major trekking routes, such as the Milford and Routeburn tracks, you will need to book well in advance.
