Life is a Journey, Not a Destination

Abusive relationships are more common than you may think.

You may not understand why a woman who is being abused stays in that relationship, but there are many different reasons. One of the hardest things to do is overcome your feelings and get your life back. If you are in an abusive relationship, it’s very important that you end the relationship as soon as possible. It may in fact save your life. However, you need to understand the thoughts and emotions of abused women before you can make a plan to actually leave. You need know that you are not alone and many women have felt this same way before. Your feelings are completely normal; once you recognize them you can start to overcome them. Here are 10 keys to reclaiming your life after leaving an Abusive Relationship:

1. Extreme guilt: You feel guilty leaving him; after all he needs you

there to take care of him because he can’t take care of himself. He may not have anyone else who cares in his life and you feel bad for leaving him alone. However, he took care of himself just fine before he met you and is perfectly capable of taking care of himself now.

2. It’s your fault he’s like this: You may feel like he hits you or

emotional abuses you because you did something wrong. You may think this is what you deserve. It’s not you, it’s them. If they abuse you then they will abuse any women in their life. More than likely they have been abusive to the women before you as well. You didn’t make him the way he is; it’s not your fault.

3. If you leave he may hurt your friends or family: Abusive men break women down slowly. Little by little they begin to become terrified that this man is capable of anything. You certainly don’t want the people you love to be hurt or worse. Believe me, your friends and family will be fine. The reality is they are nowhere near as scared of him as you are and he wouldn’t dare try to hurt someone who wasn’t afraid of him.

4. You have nowhere to go. A lot of abusive men isolate women

from their friends and family. Even if this has happened to you if you are strong and call some of your friends and family, most likely someone will take you in. They still care, but they can’t make your decisions for you. They won’t offer you need to take the first step and ask for help. I know it’s hard, but it has to be done. If you really don’t have anywhere at all to go, then call the local women’s shelter.

Most cities have them and you can stay there, the people there will help you get on your feet.

5. If you leave you’ll be alone forever: No one wants to be alone,

but you won’t be alone forever. Once you begin to get your life back together, you will realize that you’re worth it. You deserve better and there is someone out there who will love you the way you deserve to be loved.

6. If I leave my kids won’t have a father: It’s sad I know, but if

you stay your kids will grow up to have abusive relationships as well. Truth be told, they are much better off without him.

7. I don’t have any money to leave: It doesn’t matter, the

important part is leaving. You can worry about making money later. You will slowly get on your feet and get a job to make your own money.

8. If he finds me he’ll kill me: If you don’t leave he has more

of a chance to kill you. If you feel that your life is that much in danger, then leave at night when he’s asleep and don’t tell anyone where you are going. Eventually he will give up looking for you.

9. If I leave him then he’ll just put someone else through this:

That is probably true, but hopefully they will be smart enough to notice the early signs of an abuser. You can’t allow what may happen to the next person to be your problem. You need to worry about you and your kids, if you have them, getting out and finding a safe place to go.

10. I can’t do it on my own: Yes, you can. You may not

remember, but somehow you made it before you met him and you will make it after you leave him.

Surviving an abusive relationship will probably be one of the hardest things you do in your life. Just keep in mind that you are a strong woman and you deserve better than what you have now. No one deserves to be abused, no matter what they’ve done in their lives. You can beat this and you can get your life back.

Many elderly people and those with disabilities and their families are wanting to receive care in the comfort of their own homes. There are different types of home care workers. ovanti Cosmetics and Spa is celebrating five years as a thriving part of the Greensboro business community. Since 2010 the company has been the only, successful freestanding cosmetic store in the entire Four Seasons Town Centre.

When the Atlanta-based company first opened its doors sisters and beauty moguls, Marquis and Marquel Bohannon had their work cut out for them. Their goal was to expand the Bovanti brand in the Greensboro area.

Marquis and Marquel were very creative and innovative to say the least; however having confidence in their winning and magnificent product and services was more than enough fuel for the sisters to turn Bovanti into one of the area’s premier cosmetic providers and full service spa.

“In the beginning we would have to stand and call customers over to the store. We put the ground work in,” says Marquel. “We were going to salons and schools just getting our name out there, but now everyone is familiar with the Bovanti brand and superior customer service. They are coming in on their own already knowing what they want. That’s exciting for us.”

What people have discovered is that Bovanti is much more than a cosmetics line. Although the spa has been a part of the business from the very beginning many people were still unaware and did not fully utilize the services offered. Now that the word has spread and people have experienced the spa, the sisters agree they don’t have any difficulty booking clients.

The goal is for clients to relax, release and rejuvenate.

The spa room offers massages, facials, back treatments, hand treatments, Glycolic facial peels, waxing and more.

Nearly every team member is a licensed esthetician so clients can be assured a Bovanti treatment is a professional service. Nevertheless, Bovanti has the capabilities to bring the spa to the client. “We call them Bovanti Diva Day Parties,” says Marquis. “We can schedule to come out to your location or event and host a pamper party on site. We do mini facials, hand treatments and more. You can receive the ultimate beauty and spa experience.”

No matter what service or product Bovanti offers, the company believes education and customer satisfaction to be the most important factors. From start to finish a Bovanti client is educated about the products she is purchasing, which are hypo allergenic and noncomedogenic. A Bovanti client is taught how to properly apply the cosmetics she purchases. Where other cosmetic lines fall short in educating clients, Bovanti sets and raises the standard. In addition, their celebrity makeup artist teach monthly make-up classes.

The techniques and processes that the beauty moguls use and teach their clients are some of the same foundational techniques they learned years ago when they first began working in the family empire. They would watch their mother, Anita H. Bohannon – a beauty empowerment coach – and she would teach them so that they could assist her whenever she needed additional help. They may have been only 13 or 14 years old, but they quickly became pros just as the business grew to become their passion and purpose. Marquis jokingly says they were helping women look flawless while they themselves were bare-faced and not allowed to wear makeup until they were 16 years old.

Bovanti is a multi-divisional product and service company. Through hard work, but more importantly the grace and divine direction of God, the company has been in business for 33 years. The Spirit Led Performing Arts Ministry Power House Of Deliverance Ministries

pirit Led Performing Arts (SLPA) Ministry is an auxiliary ministry within Power House of Deliverance Garden Cathedral with a sole purpose to nurture and develop the artistic gifts of youth and young adults. It is also their goal to ensure that each participant grows naturally, spiritually and physically in the word of God, as well as the arts. The group performs on Sunday mornings for morning worship and various special events within the ministry. They are also available to perform within their community.

The ministry began in 1992 as Spirit Led Dance Ministry.

It has since evolved into Spirit Led Performing Arts, encompassing dance, mime and drama. They are inspired by the direction of their pastor, Bishop W. L. Washington and the direction GOD gives Elder Kim Simmons. As God speaks through Bishop Washington, it permeates to the hearts of the SLPA leaders. The program offers liturgical dance and mime from ages three to adult. Upon request they have offered African, tap and hip-hop dance classes.

The Beginner Class

The testimony of SLPA according to Elder Simmons is rooted in the talents that have evolved, the lives that have been changed and the spiritual growth that has occurred while young men and women grow to fulfill their God given destiny. “Our desire is not to be just another performing arts group, but a performing arts ministry that changes the lives of its members and its members assist in changing the lives of others,” she says. “My role within the ministry is to oversee all capacities of the ministry. I create pieces for various events throughout the year, instruct teachers in their creative pieces, encourage the parents and most importantly help to ensure that all members are growing spiritually.”

Bishop Washington says his vision for the ministry is to see them minister beyond what the norm of dancing is. “When they dance, they actually bring people’s mind into what they are doing and allowing them to see Christ in it,” he says. Bishop Washington also would like to open a school in the near future where they can teach the scripture reference behind the dance, and utilize it as a soul winning tool. “It’s not just a message within the house but it is also an outreach that gives our kids something to do with their gifts and talents given by God,” he says. “It is God ordered, God sent, and God approved.”

What amazes him the most is to see the generations of children that have come through the SLPA and moved on, but have also came back to dance again. There are mother-daughter combinations with parents who dance with their daughters, both of which have roots in the SLPA. The mime ministry, Bishop Washington says gives the young men of Power House a foundation which is directed by Travis Moore. Moore says, “This is a ministry that focuses on empowering people, with God’s truths, through movement and dance. Consistently praying and rightly dividing the word of truth is encouraged by all participants. This ministry has encouraged me to raise the bar in my personal life. I understand that I have a generation of young men from all ages that are heavily involved in this part of ministry while under my direction.

It also gives me an opportunity to show them that living this Christian life is possible.”

Continued from previous page In her role of administrator for SLPA, JoAnn Gerald believes the ministry of Spirit Led Performing Arts (SLPA) brings the word of God to people who may not be reached through the actual preached word. “It is our responsibility to grasp the attention of the people by using our dance and mime forms of worship. Our pastor counts on our area of ministry the same way that he relies on our worship team and choir,” she says. Gerald is a member of the motherdaughter team that serves the ministry. Her daughter, Raymonda McNair is an intermediate and adult instructor.

Gerald says led by God to participate because of the opportunity to worship God through the expression of dance. “I watched Elder Kim Simmons sacrifice and give her last to make sure that every child or adult that wanted to participate could. She did everything from picking them up and bringing them to practice to taking her own money to purchase any garments that they needed and feeding them if there was a need,” says Gerald.

Raymonda McNair has been dancing with SLPA since she was 7 years old. Now 27, she says being in the ministry has made her into the woman that she is today. “Elder Simmons, along with Bishop Washington has molded and shaped me on my journey through life,” she explains. “The main aspect of SLPA is giving back. I am blessed because they love and respect me and look at me as the role model they need in their lives to be wholesome and Christ like.”

Elonda Burnson, who serves as an administrator for SLPA says her children have been impacted by the ministry. “The teachers encouraged my daughter while she was in the ministry and now she is in college. The things they taught her she uses as her motto. My son is also an active member of the ministry. The teachers are like second parents to the students. It’s more than a ministry, we’re family.” she says.

Seylah Martin serves as a teacher assistant for beginner I and II classes. She helps to correct mistakes the students may make during practice and help them to understand their movements. She is also an intermediate dancer and active in teen church. “My goal is to help our ministry flourish by doing whatever is necessary and helping out as much as I can. I want to give back to those who have given unto me,” says Martin.

Kiericka Edwards who serves as a teacher for the beginner I and II classes shares that SLPA isn’t just a dance ministry, but a crazy family who can always have fun and fellowship with one another. “There are things that I can talk to our members about that I can’t discuss with my other friends and family. It is great when we get together and watch old videos of performances and see how much we have grown spiritually and how the instructors have grown when it comes to choreography,” she states. “We believe God has us in His hands and we have a great man of God, Bishop Washington that believes in us even more.” h

This event will take place at NC A&T State University’s Harrison Auditorium at 6:00 p.m. and is FREE to the public. This year our recital theme, “Upholding the Standard”, will demonstrate the essence of Christiandom as we exemplify through the arts of dance and mime, the values Christians should maintain.

When she first began college, Lewis wanted to be a computer science manger. Her path in life changed. She started selling credit card insurance in 1993. “I did pretty good, but it was not enough to raise a family of four. I had three children and needed a job that would provide me the flexibility of being there for my kids and still be able to make money,” she says. She was working for a Fortune 500 company and was eventually promoted to the position sales verifier. Over the years her roles would change and navigate her to the doors of NABAJ. In order to realize and understand what it takes to be successful, she had to overcome her own fears and doubts. NABAJ oversees independent agents that are top-notch professionals in their field and willing to be led. “Today if you have a computer and a willingness to help others, you can be an insurance agent. Positive Image Performing Arts

ourtney Taylor-Porter, owner and director of Positive Image Performing Arts has been perfecting her craft since the age of five. She is a native of Kernersville, N.C. and has committed her life, passion and dreams to teaching girls and boys between the ages of three to 18 various disciplines of dance.

In 2004, Porter was the director of a dance studio in Kernersville and received an opportunity from her father who offered her studio space to work with students in her spare time.

Not realizing the divine plan that God had ordained for her, she started the process of establishing Positive Image Performing Arts in Winston-Salem. In the spring of 2005, the dance studio opened its doors with 17 students and by the end of the summer she had a roster of 100 children. Currently, the studio has 12 instructors and offers classes in ballet, tap, jazz, pointe, hip-hop, contemporary, praise dance and tumbling through competitive teams and non-competitive programs.

Porter has worked hard to live out her dreams through Positive Image Performing Arts. In 2014, her dance studio appeared on the Lifetime TV show, Dance Moms and her dancers were handpicked by Debbie Allen to perform in her summer tour.

She is dedicated to working with children and over the years she has seen tremendous growth with the students who stay in her program. She has watched them develop higher self-esteem, a deeper understanding of being committed, practicing, time management skills and an appreciation of community. Most importantly, she teaches her students about morals and the value of being kind. “If you try to do great things and do right by people, in time you will see all of your dreams come true,” says Porter.

Through Porter’s successes, she has definitely faced challenges over the past 11 years of being in business. “Some of the obstacles I’ve faced have been trying to convince people, especially parents, to understand the importance of the arts

and investing in it to help their children progress in life,” she says.

“However, what keeps me motivated is seeing the youngest children in the program who are three years old enjoying class; it’s just their spirit that keeps a smile on my face.”

In May 2015, Porter is bringing Positive Image Performing Arts programming to Charlotte, in June she is moving into a newly renovated 7,000 + sq. ft. studio-facility in the downtown Winston-Salem area. RENEE Surviving & Striving

H

er first name is actually Larissa but it’s alright to call her Renee. She is a wife, a mother, and the youngest sister to a family of five. She also has an undeniable love for God and performing her unsolicited duty of serving and helping people. She is also a courageous and ambitious young woman who knows what life is all about; creating lasting memories with family and friends.

Cooper also says she lives her life with the intent of making a difference in the lives of those who are overlooked, undeserved, and less fortunate. She backs up this affirmation with action as well. In the past months, Cooper graduated as valedictorian from The Breckinridge School of Nursing and Health Sciences at ITT Technical Institute.

Her journey to become a nurse actually started over 20 years ago. Caring for others was something that came naturally. After graduating from high school, she continued her studies to become an licensed practical nurse (LPN). Once that was complete and after passing the necessary exams, she worked for a year in long term care before joining the U.S. Army. She later acquired different skills and gleaned from other experienced nurses, searching for ways to make a positive impact in the lives of those God would choose to place in her care while in the Army.

In February 2013, Coopers says God clearly spoke to her via a television commercial, instructing her to go back to school to obtain her nursing license. “This was something I had considered many times before but it never seemed like the timing was right. I was almost about to let the dream go by the wayside because time was passing and I wasn’t getting any younger,” she says.

It was a huge leap of faith but she made the necessary calls to get the process rolling, took and passed the entry test, and started class within the next month. The rest is history.

Completing nursing school is not a small fete especially when you’re trying to do so while being a wife and mother says Cooper. “I was challenged to even stay the course sometimes. The closer I was to the end, the more difficult it was to go on. I had to will myself to do it.” She says she had to encourage herself when nothing else would work.

Cooper also stands on the values that were instilled in her as a child. These include trusting and leaning on the earthly jewels that He has placed in her life such as June Victoria, Bishop George W. Brooks, Pastor Brian J. Pierce, Sr., Minister Patricia Walker, her father, mother and children. h

I would say yes based on our actions because in reality actions speak louder than words. In the gospel music industry, I encounter a lot of independent artist who’s actions lines up with the question. Lets deal with award shows and the purpose of having them.

I have no problem with award shows that are genuine. I feel some are out of hand and the bottom line it is about making money. You find some eager or anxious gospel artist looking to make it big and by winning an award they can justify a certain amount of money to perform at your event. I get a lot of artist sending me request to vote for them so they can win a particular award. Let me back up for a second, when they first started out it was about doing music ministry and how they said God called them to reach the lost. Somewhere along the way it has changed into music entertainment. Why would you need an award to do ministry? The thing that gets me is artist pay for that award while getting popular votes among their friends and families. From my perspective, its like you paying me to tell you

Stop chasing validation and read what God says about you in his word. Do we not trust God in what he says about us? It goes back to the question asked earlier in this blog.

“Is it possible to love God and not trust him? If someone wants to honor you, then let them seek after you while you are working doing the will of God. Running to various award shows spending money will eventually get you burned out, broke and frustrated. That is what the devil wants and if he can get your mind off of what God has called you to do then he has won. So realize who you are in Christ and stop seeking validation chasing what you already have through Christ Jesus.

Read and believe on his word it can save you a h lot of money.

Alexandria Nicole Berry

United States Marine Corps Alexandria Nicole Berry is the daughter of Reverend Anthony and Mrs. Jill Berry of Greensboro North Carolina. She is a Graduate of South East Guilford High School class of 2011 and is a previous winner of the Miss Teen of the Triad Pageant.

Alexandria received appointments to West Point and the United States Naval Academy, she chose the U.S. Naval Academy. Her freshman year, as a walk on she earned a spot on their NCAA rifle team and became the team captain for the 2014-15 school year.

She has had to overcome personal injury from a major training accident this year but through determination, hard work and prayer she has persevered. Alexandria will Graduate from the Naval Academy on May 22, 2015. In June she will report to Quantico to begin her training as a Marine Corps officer.

Heads Up Barber Shop has partntered with several Guilford County Schools and is offering mentoring and educational programs in the field of barbering.

Led by Rick Morton and Dwayne Morris, their West Wendover Avenue location has opened their doors and hearts to several youth, who they feel can benefit from this awesome experience. The kids come to their shop, get free hair cuts, advice, and a hot lunch, all provided by the staff of Heads Up Barbershop.

However they can’t do this along. They are seeking donations from anyone who shares the same compassion for the next leaders of tomorrow.
