IRON MOUNTAIN

The county seat of Dickinson County is centrally located in the great iron district known as the Menominee Range, whose mines within the city limits shipped during the year 190% upwards of 1,500,000 tons of high grade orc, giving employment to over 2,000 men. The greatest iron ore mines in existence are here located, among them being the Chapin, Pewabic, Millie, etc. This city offers great inducements to capitalists. The immense water powers, within

three miles radius of the city, offer power at a minimum of cost. The railway facilities are the best of any city in the Upper Penin- sula, the two great trunk lines, Chicago & Northwestern and Chi- cago, Milwaukee & St. Paul, giving fine service and connections to any point desired. The city is lighted by electricity, and has a water works system with 17 miles of water mains, pumping over 700,000 gallons for daily consumption, and has a combined pumping capacity of over 4,000,000 gallons daily, furnishing the purest (by analysis) water to be found anywhere. The sewerage system is complete and many of our streets are macadamized and more are now being finished each year. A paid fire department, with two engine houses, is maintained, and its efficiency is a matter of favorable com- ment. The police system is excellent. Iron Mountain is essentially a city of homes, each year seeing many fine residences built. The business houses and public buildings also show a marked improve-

ment each year. We cannot enumerate here all the good things regarding the city of Iron Mountain, but leave the reader to peruse the following pages, which will give him or her a better idea of the business, professional and social importance of the same. In taking the names of the people and numbers of the business houses and residences of our city the greatest care has been exercised to give the same correctly, but in some instances this has been well

nigh impossible, for the reason that some of the residences, and many of the business houses, have not been numbered, or the num- bers have been taken off and not replaced. In such cases we have used the number that should appear. If the Common Council will order new street signs put up and the people number their places of business and residences correctly it will make it much easier for the compiling of the Directory of 1904-1905. Amen.
