Termites are often called hidden or silent pests because they do not always produce obvious signs immediately. They typically prefer dark, protected environments where they can feed on cellulose-rich materials such as wood and other plant-based materials. Depending on the species and local environment, termites may live: Inside wooden structures Beneath floors Behind walls Around foundations In soil near buildings Inside wall cavities Around crawl spaces In roof or attic structures Inside wooden furniture or other materials A homeowner may therefore have termite activity without seeing an actual termite. Instead, the first clue might be physical damage to the property. 1. Hollow-Sounding Wood One of the warning signs homeowners may notice is wood that sounds hollow when gently tapped. Healthy structural wood generally has a solid sound. Termites can consume portions of wood from the inside while leaving the outer surface relatively intact. This can create areas where the wood feels or sounds different. You may notice this around: Door frames Window frames Baseboards Wooden flooring Cabinets Beams Trim Wooden supports However, hollow-sounding wood does not automatically mean termites are present. Moisture damage, decay, age, or other problems can also weaken wood. That is why this sign should be considered a clue rather than proof. 2. Mud Tubes Around the Foundation Mud tubes are one of the more recognizable signs associated with certain termites, particularly subterranean termites. These narrow structures can appear on: Foundation walls Exterior walls Crawl-space supports Basement areas Around plumbing penetrations Other surfaces connecting soil and the structure Termites may construct these tubes to travel between their colony and a food source while remaining protected from exposure. If you discover a suspicious mud tube, avoid assuming that breaking it apart has solved the problem. The colony may still be active nearby.
