WILDERNESS PARK HAS NEW EQUIPMENT
MEMORIAL DAY HONORED It was a cold blustery day with a
hint of rain in the air, but between 90 and 100 people came together at Necedah’s Bayview Cemetery. The weather was not the only problem of this day. The PA system refused to work. So, with a cold wind blowing and no PA a shortened, but patriotic service went on. The service opened with the Necedah High School band playing the National Anthem. This was followed by Vince Marchetti reading a short history of Memorial Day. In 1864 the south decided to remember the soldiers that had died in the Civil War. They decided to decorate all military graves in the south. In 1872 congress recognized it officially and the date it was celebrated on was May 30. That remained the date of Memorial Day until 1971, when congress passed a law making the official date on which Memorial Day is celebrated. Memorial Day was originally for only those who had died in battle but has since been extended to all veterans who have left this earth. The Necedah High School then played The Navy Hymn and America the Beautiful, after which Margaret Marchetti gave the Benediction. This was followed by Jack Jasinski offering our prayers to the Oklahoma victims and survivors and reading the names of nine WWII veterans who have passed away since last Memorial Day. These nine were: Kenneth Nordall, Robert Cetnar, John Sorensen, Eugene Wilson, James Hill, Jack Salter, Neil Vanderhoof, Bruce Walker, and Anthony Kraus. The band then played America and this was followed by the placing a wreath at the cemetery’s monument to our veterans. The firing squad next gave the salute and the playing of TAPS followed. While there may have been weather and electronic problems the event went very well and left everyone on hand feeling a little more thankful for our veterans. STEVE NORLING PHOTOS
Juneau County’s Wilderness Park Campground has undergone some improvements and upgrades this spring. A brand new all concrete pit toilet was installed and best of all for families camping there is the new playground. This is an excellent playground laid out all in sand and adjacent to the sand beach. This gives the youngsters a way to get from the beach to the playground with little walking. The work on the playground was done by Miller and Associates of Sauk City and the playground was purchased from Burke Equipment and was manufactured in Fond Du Lac, making the entire project an all Wisconsin project. The design for the playground was done by the students of the Necedah Schools. Four different designs were taken to the school for the youngsters who were asked which design they preferred. They voted on it and the design of the playground is the winner of that vote. For all the family campers that use this park, this is a great addition. The equipment is excellent and the playground is well laid out. The kids can have a great time and when they get sweated up playing on the playground, the beach is real handy. STEVE NORLING PHOTO

Rep. Brooks holds session BY STEVE NORLING Wisconsin State Representative Ed Brooks held a listening session in Necedah on Monday, June 3rd. The number of citizens attending was very small but it was an interesting session. Norm Parker, the President of the area drainage district, questioned Rep. Brooks on how long it should take for the Appellate Court to take up a case. The District lost a case in a county court and appealed the case over two years ago and it has not yet been looked at. The case they lost in effect
eliminated the drainage district. Prior to losing this case, the district had cleaned up all of the ditches and the water was flowing well. After losing the case the ditches are once again filling up with debris and there is standing water on farm fields because of the stopped flow. The drainage district no longer exists and can do nothing about it. They would like their case at the Appellate Court level to be heard so they know where they stand. Rep. Brooks stated that he would look into it and do whatever he could. This reporter questioned

him on the school bill that is being worked on in Madison. Rep. Brooks stated that he believes that there will be a compromise on the bill and there will be an increase in the aid to schools and also that there will be an increase in the school voucher program. He was not certain what it would be as the bill is not yet out of committee. Rep. Brooks also visited Necedah Screw Machine to find out how things are going. After meeting the owners, he was given a very thorough tour of the plant by John Belmonte, one of the owners. Belmonte explained that the work force varied but currently there are about 50 people employed by the plant. Belmonte showed some of the state of the art machinery that is being used in the plant and the many different items that are manufactured there. Some of their business is with other Juneau County businesses and most of their business is for other American manufacturers. He also stated that 90 to 95% of their raw material is made in America. They are bringing all of the plant up to the best twenty-first century standards and Belmonte hopes that the schools and other
companies will cooperate in teaching those students that have an interest in manufacturing the latest methods. Screw Machine has partnered with the Necedah School District and other Juneau County Manufacturers to help this along. Rep. Brooks was very impressed with the machinery and with the explanations that Belmonte provided. They also discussed a little about state regulations and what could be done.
