L’iniziativa documentata in questo volume riannoda, a distanza di qualche decennio, i fili di una consuetudine di lavoro e di amicizia tra Osvaldo Borsani e alcuni dei più vivaci artisti del nostro tempo.

La cultura dell’azienda Tecno è stata segnata profondamente da questo rapporto tra il Progettista e l’Artista. Per questo abbiamo potuto, oggi, riprendere facilmente il discorso, benché con significati nuovi. 11 nome “Collezione ABV” ripete il marchio di Arredamenti Borsani Varedo, l’impresa da cui Tecno ebbe origine.

Ringrazio, per questa realizzazione e per questo volume, prima di tutto gli artisti stessi, che ci hanno seguiti con passione e competenza; Teresa Pomodoro e Fausta Squartiti, art directors della Collezione ABV; il professore Giulio Carlo Argan, che ha disegnato con sapienza lo scenario culturale in cui si colloca la Collezione ABV; e Aldo Colonetti, che ha applicato la sua qualità di esegeta alla comprensione sia dell’insieme della collezione che delle singole opere.

The initiative documented in this volume is a reflection and a revival, after an interval o f several decades, o f the working habit and friendship that united Osvaldo Borsani and some of the most lively artists o f our time.

The relationship between Designer and Artist is a fundamental element o f Tecno's corporate culture, which has made it easy for us to resume this collaboration and to give it a new meaning. The name "Collezione ABV" contains the trademark of Arredamenti Borsani Varedo, the firm from which Tecno originated.

Arte pura ed arte applicata avevano mantenuto tra loro un rapporto armonico, interdisciplinare, collaborando alla creazione di un’unica grande opera, fino alla fine del secolo scorso, quando, con l’avvento della civiltà industriale, le mutate condizioni sociali hanno radicalmente trasformato la committenza: da colta, personalizzata, elitaria, ad anonima, vasta, imitativa di comportamenti fino ad allora irraggiungibili dal ceto medio.

Si è venuta così a creare la necessità di una produzione di oggetti meno specifica, e il divario tra arti e mestieri è stato inevitabile.

E per questo che un artista puro disdegna di creare un oggetto d’uso, mentre artisti-artigiani, eccellenti per creatività e mestiere, rammaricano di non essere considerati artisti puri.

Il problematico rapporto tra arte e industria fu oggetto delle attenzioni di William Morris, che nel 1880 fondò la società “Arts and Crafts”, con lo scopo di promuovere una fusione tra le arti, ipotizzando così una grande arte popolare.

Il tutto si risolse in una produzione scarsa, ad alto costo, ma le basi per una produzione industriale di alta qualità artistica, erano poste.

Nel 1908 Adolf Loos, nel suo saggio “Ornamento e delitto” dichiarò la necessità di mantenere separata l’arte dall’architettura. È chiaro che per lui arte equivaleva a decorazione, architettura a struttura. ■ Il Neoplastico Vantongerloo, negli anni venti definirà il proprio credo strutturalista con - Tecnica, Funzione, Forma -.

Ci vorrà il Bauhaus per riunire in una unica figura i ruoli di pittore, scultore ed architetto. Un creatore inteso come - operatore estetico-. Uguale valore inventivo viene riconosciuto ad una pittura, una scultura, una architettura, un mobile, un contenitore, una pagina tipografica, una parte meccanica.

Il progresso scientifico e tecnologico è vissuto dagli artisti d’avanguardia come latore di equità sociale e quindi di consumi allargati ma semplificati.

La bellezza di un oggetto non dipende più dall’estro momentaneo del suo creatore, ma da una ricerca che produce estetica attraverso una corretta applicazione della tecnica.

Muore il virtuosismo necessario per costruire un prodigio visivo, nasce un progetto che è esso stesso Testetica di un momento mentale.

L’inedita figura delT’industrial designer” pensa ad un concetto di serie consapevole e programmata, dove la qualità -morale- dell’oggetto sta nella sua ripetibilità.

Per entusiasmo da neofiti, si tenta d’imporre un ordine precostituito nel quale vivere. Ma anche senza arrivare alla esagerazione di Le Corbusier che costruiva (contraddizione in

Pure art and applied art maintained a harmonious, inter­ disciplinary relationship, collaborating in the creation o f a single great work, until the end o f the last century, when, with the advent o f industrial civilization, the changes in social conditions radically transformed the clientele from refined, personalized, etilist to anonymous, vast and imitative of behaviours hitherto beyond the possibilities o f the middle classes.

This led to a need fo r a less specific production o f objects and the separation o f arts and crafts became inevitable: the pure artist disdained to create useful objects, while the artistcraftsman, creative as well as skilled in his craft, resented the fact that he was not considered a pure artist.

The problematical relationship between art and industry was o f great interest to William. Morris, who, in 188Q, founded the “Arts and Crafts” society fo r the purpose o f promoting a merging o f the arts on the hypothesis that this would lead to the development o f a great popular art. The production that was the result, although small and expensive, nevertheless laid the foundations fo r industrial production o f high artistic quality.

In 1908, in his article “Ornament and Crime”, Adolf Loos insisted that art must be kept separate from architecture. It is clear that for him art was decoration, architecture structure.

In the 1920s, the Neo-Plasticist Vantongerloo summed up his structuralist view as “Technique, Function, Form”.

It was left to the Bauhaus to unite the roles o f the painter, sculptor and architect in a single figure: the creator as “aesthetic operator”. The same inventive value could be attributed to a painting, a sculpture, a piece o f arch itecture, an article o f furniture, a container, a printed page, a mechanical part.

In the view o f the artists o f the avant-gardes, scientific and technological progress would lead to social equality and thus to an increase and simplification o f consumption. The beauty o f an object depended no longer on the momentary inspiration o f its creator but on research serving to produce aesthetic quality by means o f a correct application of technique: instead o f the virtuosity needed to construct a visual prodigy, the project which is itself the aesthetic o f a mental moment. A new figure, the “industrial designer”, thought in terms of programmed serial production, where the moral quality o f the object consisted in its repeatability.

With the enthusiasm o f beginners, an attempt was made to impose a pre-constituted order in which to live. But without going to the extremes o f Le Corbusier, who constructed immobile (stone) furniture in what he considered the best spatial positions, it was possible to hypothesize rational furnishings fo r a fam ily and working life organized - this was

Le basilari innovazioni concettuali proposte dalle avanguardie storiche, Costruttivismo, Neoplasticismo e Razionalismo, nel mondo del mobile hanno portato ad una prima produzione pianificata, verso la metà degli anni cinquanta ma con più convinzione negli anni sessanta, che si chiamò popolarmente - stile svedese - perchè nell’Europa del nord una società economicamente più avanzata aveva favorito tale evoluzione del concetto di arredamento.

Sembrava che più nulla potesse essere fatto su questa strada di estrema sintesi costruttiva e decorativa. È probabilmente questa la ragione per la quale, verso gli anni settanta, e sempre in sintonia con quanto avveniva in pittura e scultura, si è verificata una inversione di tendenza che ha prodotto un rinnovamento delPimmagine di arredamento, per 10 più improntata sulla trasgressione visiva architettata in ambito Postmoderno. È stata operata una commistione delle discipline di architettura, pittura e scultura, in chiave intenzionalmente ludica, certamente dissacratoria.

In Italia, negli anni cinquanta, riallacciandosi forse ai rari e poco noti interventi che artisti come Sophie Tauber-Arp, van Doesburg, Sonia Delaunay o Giacomo Balla avevano operato su mobili ed ambientazioni integralmente intesi come creazioni interdisciplinari, l’architetto Osvaldo Borsani affidò ad un gruppo di artisti emergenti, operanti in area milanese, 11 compito di integrare il proprio lavoro al suo di architetto e designer.

Fu un raro esempio di reciproca e fattiva collaborazione, non competitiva, che produsse una serie di mobili ed ambientazioni di importante momento estetico, ora visti come classici esempi del gusto dell’epoca del Dopoguerra.

Nel 1953 alla “Arredamenti Borsani" si affianca la “Tecno” che, puntuale nella applicazione delle nuove tecnologie, adegua la propria produzione alle inedite esigenze di un mercato sempre più teso alla grande serie, progettata e costruita per consumatori consapevoli.

Il rapporto del designer con la fabbrica vede in quegli anni sviluppate le intenzioni auspicate dal Bauhaus e rese infine possibili dopo quasi trent’anni.

Nel 1989 la “Tecno” sente la necessità di riprendere il colloquio con gli artisti, tenendo conto di tutto quanto è avvenuto in questi anni nel mondo del design.

La nostra ricerca, in qualità di art directors, intende mettere a confronto diverse generazioni, ottenendone un ampio spettro di espressioni, essendo nostra opinione che occorre cercare sempre la qualità dell’invenzione per produrre oggetti atti ad assecondare o addirittura promuovere atteggiamenti diversi del vivere, siano essi logici o fantastici.

The fundamental conceptual innovations proposed by the historical avant-gardes, Constructivism, Neo-Plasticism and Rationalism, in the sphere o f furniture led, towards the middle of the 1950s but more notably in the 1960s, to the programmed production o f furniture in what was generally known as the Swedish style, because in northern Europe an economically more advanced society had favoured this evolution o f the concept o f furnishing.

It seemed as if nothing further could be done in the direction of extreme constructive and decorative synthesis.

It was probably for this reason that, towards the 1970s, always in syntony with what was happening in the fields o f painting and sculpture, there was a reversal o f tendency which led to a renovation o f the image o f furnishing that was mainly characterized by the visual transgression favoured by the Post­ modern movement. The disciplines o f architecture, painting and sculpture were blended together in a vein which teas intentionally ludic and certainly profane.

In Italy in the 1950s, perhaps taking his cue from the rare and little known ventures o f artists such as Soph ie Tauber-Arp, van Doesburg, Sonia Delaunay and Giacomo Balia in the field o f furniture and interior decoration conceived in a multi­ disciplinary sense, the architect Osvaldo Borsani, fo r the purposes o f his activity as an architect and design er, made use of contributions o f a number o f rising artists working in the Milan area.

It was a rare example o f reciprocal, effective and non­ competitive collaboration, which gave rise to a series o f articles offurniture and decors o f considerable aesthetic significance, now regarded as classic examples o f the taste o f the post-war period.

In 1953 “Arredamenti Borsani’ came to be flanked by “Tecno ” and advanced technologies were applied in order to meet the new demand o f the market fo r products manufactured on a large scale, designed and constructedfo r exigent consumers. In these years it finally became possible to realize that relationship between designer and factory that the Bauhaus had advocated thirty years before.

In 1989, in view o f all that had happened in the field of industrial design in the interventing years, “Tecno” decided it was necessary to resume the dialogue with artists.

As the art directors, our purpose has been to propose the work o f different generations in order to obtain a wide range of expressions, for we believe that the quality o f inven t ion is what is needed to produce objects apt to support, or even to promote, different attitudes to life, whether logical or imaginative.

It should be pointed out, however, that creativity is not necessarily divorced from functionality, and that new designs for old functions are not incompatible with the cultural duty to

Riteniamo quanto mai opportuno però affermare che la creatività non deve essere necessariamente disgiunta dalla funzionanlità, e che nuovi disegni per antiche funzioni siano conciliabili con il dovere culturale di esprimere il nostro tempo. Un tempo, che non ha unità di espressione: diversi credo creativi, corrispondenti a diverse filosofie di vita, convivono tra loro, sovrapponendosi e integrandosi, il più delle volte opponendosi.

L’idea che del mondo si sono fatti gii uomini, frantumata in miriadi di opinioni, di volta in volta fornisce la verità in chiave espressionista, simbolista, realista o strutturalista. E il fascino di un momento storico problematico.

L’indirizzo ideologico del progetto verte sulle finalità di avere nuove, anche poetiche invenzioni, purché si tratti di forme studiate appositamente per una determinata funzione.

Non si vogliono produrre sculture sulle quali, più o meno comodamente, ci si possa sedere, sdraiare, appoggiare.

Caratteristica della “Collezione ABV” è quella -diversitàche sta alFinterno delle singole personalità dei progettisti: alcuni destinati a produrre per la serie, altri solo prototipi, altri produrranno solo idee che stimoleranno l’immaginario, documentando la qualità dell’impossibile.

Per dare inizio al nuovo progetto, ci è parso augurale rimettere in produzione un mobile che Giò Ponti aveva disegnato nel 1967 per la Tecno, ancora in collaborazione con Osvaldo Borsani, come testimonia un interessante carteggio tra i due.

Si può senz’altro dire che la figura di Giò Ponti sia quella che più si avvicina all’immagine dell’architetto-artista, e che il suo “Triposto” nella “Collezione ABV”, si possa considerare l’ideale - trait d’union - tra la passata e la presente esperienza progettuale.

Pensando a quali artisti, tra quelli a noi noti, potesse essere interessato a progettare un mobile, abbiamo voluto iniziare da chi, per uso privato, ne aveva già disegnato uno.

Nelle nostre visite a Man Ray, nel suo studio parigino di Rue Ferou, ci si sedeva su una certa poltrona, e solo più tardi ci siamo rese conto che si trattava di un pezzo storico.

Quella poltrona era infatti stata disegnata prima del 1930, e fatta costruire artigianalmente dall’artista, in due esemplari, uno per sé ed uno per la moglie Juliet. È stata proprio Juliet, con la sua consueta grazia e disponibilità, ad accordarci il permesso di mettere in produzione questo oggetto, accordo poi perfezionatosi con Gregory Browner, del Man Ray Trust.

Ma anche Luigi Veronesi, nel suo studio, usa un piccolo scrittoio, da lui disegnato nel 1935. La progettualità razionalista di questo oggetto ci è parsa, Veronesi d'accordo, del tutto idonea ad essere proposta oggi, per molteplici esigenze. A questi tre mobili con una storia propria alle spalle, sono seguiti gli altri progetti, appositamente studiati per la Collezione ABV.

express our age. An age which has no unity o f expression: different creative beliefs, corresponding to different ph ilosophies o f life co-exist, sometimes overlapping and combining but usually in contrast.

M an’s view o f the world has become a multitude o f opinions, the truth being seen in expressionist, symbolist, realist or structuralist terms as the case may be.

In this lies the fascination o f a problematical historical moment.

The ideology o f the project has as its purpose the realization of new, even poetical inventions, provided that they are forms specially designed to serve a determined function.

The aim is not that o f producing sculptures on which it is possible, more or less comfortably, to sit, lie or lean.

Characteristic o f the “Collezione ABV” is that diversity which lies within the individual personality o f each o f the designers: some will give rise to a serial production, others only to prototypes, others again only to ideas that will stimulate the imaginary, documenting the quality o f the impossible.

To launch the new project, it seemed to us auspicious to put back into production the piece that Giò Ponti designed for Tecno in 1967, still in collaboration with Osvaldo Borsani, as an interesting correspondence between the two reveals.

It can be said that the figure o f Giò Ponti is the one that comes closest to the image o f the architect-artist and that his “Triposto” can be considered the ideal - trait d ’union between industrial design past and. present.

In wondering which artists, among those known to us, might be interested in designing an article o f furniture, we decided to start with someone who had designed such an object for his private use.

In our visits to Man Ray in his Paris studio in Rue Ferou, we sat in a certain arm-chair, without realizing until long afterwards that it was a historic piece.

The arm -chair had in fact been designed before 1930 and the artist had two exemplars made, one for himself the other for his wife Juliet. And it was Juliet, gracious and helpful as ever, who gave us permission to manufacture the arm-chair, an agreement finally defined with Gregory Browner o f the Man Ray Trust.

And Luigi Veronesi, too, in his studio, has a small desk which he designed in 1935. The rationalistic design o f this object seemed to us, and Veronesi agreed, to make it entirely suitable to propose today for numerous purposes.

These three pieces o f furniture with a history behind them ivere followed by the others, specially designed fo r the “Collezione ABV”.

PREFACE

Sedie, tavole, paraventi non sono architettura in scala ridotta, forse lo erano un tempo, quando la casa era un’istituzione intermedia tra Stato e persona, autorità della legge e patria potestà. Oggi fortunatamente non è che un sito dove si abita; le sue leggi strutturali dell'arredo non sono più le coordinate del pavimento e delle pareti. La tipologia e l’iconologia dell’arredo non esistono più, i mobili si modellano sulFanimata realtà fisica e psichica, intellettuale e sociale di chi ci sta. Economicamente l’arredo è una categoria di prodotti industriali che tendono a uniformarsi: la serialità totale sarebbe la conformità generale dei modi di vita, la privazione di ogni libertà dell’individuo e del gruppo.

L’uniformità del costume è senza dubbio una delle cause della crisi dell’arte, della sua prevista scomparsa dal sistema della civiltà presente e futura. Ci sono ancora, e non è detto che non prevalgano, forze contrarie per cui la persistente presenza dell'arte è un forte appoggio al tentativo di arginare l’assolutismo della società dei consumi superflui e coatti.

Non si propongono ritorni e recuperi, si pone il problema in termini chiari: il valore è remora al consumo, dunque il massimo di consumo, a cui si tende, significa l’annientamento del concetto di valore. Nel formalismo logico di questo agghiacciante discorso l’arte moderna, nel suo complesso, è ben più che un’alternativa tecnica all’automazione industriale: è un modo di esperienza che, identificando i momenti una volta separati della percezione e dell’intelletto, dà un senso nuovo e un ritmo più rapido e intenso alla vita. Perciò non gli architetti soltanto ma tutti gli artisti, in quanto tecnici dell’immagine, sono coinvolti in un’azione che in sostanza è diretta a impedire che l’immaginazione cessi di essere una facoltà intellettiva.

Vi sono motivi per pensare che oggi, nel campo del design, pittori e scultori possano rappresentare una punta avanzata rispetto agli stessi architetti perché i loro interessi sono più mirati alla visualità che alla strutturalità dell’immagine.

Ancora nel recente passato il lavoro formativo dei pittori e degli scultori era essenzialmente inventivo, quello degli architetti, progettuale. Tra i due termini non c’è antinomia: l’invenzione è più legata all’immaginazione e la progettazione più legata alla strutturalità, ma l'invenzione che non trapassa in progetto è utopia e il progetto che non ha dietro una invenzione decade a calcolo. Tutta la storia del design dimostra la conpresenza di invenzione e progettualità, sia pure con incidenza maggiore o minore dell’una o dell’altra.

Ancora oggi la radice immaginativa-visuale del design non soltanto è vitale, ma concorre a preservare la progettazione da un'indesiderabile assimilazione alla meccanica tecnica della produzione seriale.

Quando, più di cinquantanni fa, apparvero i primi mobili

Chairs, tables, screens are no longer the architecture on a small scale that perhaps they once were when the home was an intermediate institution between State and person, between the authority o f the law and paternal rights. Today, fortunately, it is simply a place where one lives; its structural laws of furnishing are no longer the co-ordinates o f the floor and the walls. The typology and the iconology o f furnishings no longer exist, the furniture models itself on the animated physical, psychic, intellectual and social reality o f the inhabitant. In economic terms, furniture is a category o f industrial products tending towards serial uniformity: total seriality would be a general conformity o f ways o f life, a privation o f everyfreedom o f the individual or group.

The uniform ity o f customs is indubitably one o f the causes o f the crisis o f art, o f the danger o f its disappearance from the system o f the present and future civilization. But there are still forces o f opposition, and it does not go without saying that they will not prevail, and in consequence the persistent presence o f art gives strong support to the endeavour to limit the absolutism o f the society o f superfluous and compulsory consumption. It is not a matter o f going backwards and recovering but o f stating the problem in clear terms: value impedes consumption and, therefore, the maximum of consumption, towards which one is tending, signifies the destruction o f the concept o f value. In the logical formalism o f this chilling discourse, modern art as a whole is clearly more than a technical alternative to industrial automation: it is a mode o f experience which, identifying the moments, once they have been separated, o f perception and the intellect, gives life a new sense and a faster, more intense rhythm.

Thus not only the architects, but also all the artists, as technicians o f the image, are engaged in an action which, in effect, has the purpose ofpreventing the imagination from ceasing to be an intellectual faculty.

There are reasons to believe that today, in the field of design, painters and sculptors may represent a point o f advancem ent beyond that o f the architects themselves, because their interests concern the visuality more than the structural character o f the image.

Even in the recent past the formative work o f painters and sculptors was essentially invent ive, that of architects concerned with planning. There is no antinomy between the two terms: invention is more closely linked to the imagination, planning to structure, but invention that does not become plan is Utopia and planning without invention becomes mere calculation.

The whole history o f industrial design reveals the co-presence o f invention and planning, in varying proportions. And even today the imaginative-visual root o f industrial design is not only vital but also helps to preserve industrial design from an

di lucido tubo metallico disegnati da Braeuer non soltanto mi colpì la novità dell’invenzione, ma l’implicita e come connaturata animazione, non senza ironia, di quelle figure domestiche filiformi e quasi immateriali, che si disegnavano nello spazio senza riempirlo, sfuggivano alle leggi dell’equilibrio e della simmetria, erano agili come serpenti e, quando non servivano più, rientravano l’una nell’altra.

Si disse che l’archetipo era la bicicletta Adler, e c’era del vero: prima l’archetipo della media era il trono regale e non è così strano che nel circolo del Bauhaus, in piena repubblica di Weimar, un ciclista fosse più simpatico di un sovrano.

Ma la vera matrice di quell’invenzione progettuale era nella grafica lineare di Klee e nella coloratissima coreografia dei balletti meccanici di Schlemmer. Fu dunque un coraggioso appello alla pittura che aprì una nuova strada del design; non tanto perché la pittura, anche non figurativa, fosse ancora in qualche modo congiunta alla naturalità della figura umana, ma per la inesausta vena d’ironia che c’era nei disegni di Klee come nei balletti di Schlemmer. È del nostro tempo demitizzare la casa, spogliarla d’ogni solennità ancestrale: non meraviglia che l’arredo moderno abbia, più o meno marcata, una componente ironica sottilmente dissacrante.

L’invenzione artistica non è la trovata bizzarra, ha un suo metodo, che si è formato nel corso dell’arte moderna.

Guardando indietro, alla prima metà del secolo, per due vie ben distinte l’arte si è concretamente inserita nel sistema della produzione e del consumo: con la progettazione di oggetti seriali e con la pubblicità. Nel primo filone predominava la progettabilità, nel secondo la visualità.

Inutile citare i tanti architetti e gli artisti visuali che, da Behrens e Gropius in poi, hanno fatto disegno industriale e gli artisti visuali che, partendo da Toulouse e Forain, hanno fatto pubblicità. Basterà ricordare che, se la pubblicità degli artisti ha contribuito a instaurare il consumo dell’oggetto attraverso l'immagine, il cui consumo è più rapido e istintivo, le esigenze della pubblicità hanno contribuito a impegnare la pittura nella ricerca di una visualità più intensa, dotata di una gran forza di percussione, che stimolava un comportamento prensile e vorace, e al di fuori di ogni ragione logica o pratica, immediato ed inconscio. Al di là della finalità commerciale, si sono venute formando direzioni di ricerca visuale tutte più o meno miranti a creare effetti percettivi che si qualificavano come immediatamente intellettivi. Non è senza significato il fatto che le correnti di ricerca cinetica e visuale sono in vari modi connesse con gli studi di psicologia della visione e con le ricerche sul pensiero immaginativo (Arnheim).

E noto che la cultura dei consumi è fondata sulla informazione e comunicazione d’immagine: mirando a travolgere il logico equilibrio di bisogno e consumo, il sistema stimola la circolazione e il consumo delle immagini

When, overfifty years ago, the first pieces offurniture in gleaming tubular metal designed by Braeuer appeared, I was struck not only by the novelty o f the invention but also by the implicit and as i f connatural animation, not without irony, of those filiform and almost immaterial domestic figures, which outlined themselves in space without filling it, evaded the laws of equilibrium and symmetry, were agile as serpents and, when no longer needed, fitted back into each other. It was said that their archetype was the Adler bicycle, and there was some truth in this: previously the archetype o f the chair was the regal throne and it is not so surprising that in Bauhaus circles, in the period o f the Weimar Republic, a cyclist had more appeal than a sovereign. But the real matrix o f that inventive project lay in the linear graphics o f Kl.ee and in the colourful choreography o f Schlemmer’s mechanical ballets. It was, thus, a courageous appeal to painting that opened a new path to industrial design; not so much because painting, even nonfigurative, was still somehow connected to the naturality o f the human figure, but because o f the unusual vein o f irony to be found in Klee’s drawings and Schlemmer’s ballets. The demythicization o f the home, stripping it o f all ancestral solemnity, belongs to our day: it is no surprise that modern furniture has in it an element, more or less marked, o f subtly profane irony.

Artistic invention is not bizarre discovery: it has a method which has developed in the course o f modern art. Looking back to the first half o f the century, it can be seen that art has effectively entered the system o f production and consumption in two clearly distinct ways: the designing o f serial objects and the designing o f advertising. In the first, the project-aspect predominated, in the second visuality. It is pointless to name the many architects, from Behrens and Gropius onwards, who have worked in industrial design, or the visual artists, starting with Toulouse and Forain, who have produced advertising material. It is enough to remember that, i f the advertisements o f artists contributed to establishing consumption o f the object through the image, the consumption o f which is more rapid and instinctive, the requirements o f advertising contributed to the engagement ofpainting in the search for a more intense visuality, endowed with a great force o f impact, that stimulated a behaviour which was prehensile and voracious, immediate and unconscious, without logical or practical reasons. Irrespective o f commercial purposes, there have developed lines o f visual research all more or less aimed at the creation o f perceptive effects which had the quality o f being immediately intellective. It is not without significance that the currents o f kinetic and visual research are connected in various ways with the study o f the psychology o f vision and researches on imaginative thought (Arnheim).

riducendo il consumo dell’oggetto a effetto secondario del consumo di immagini. Ma sorge, a questo punto, il problema del valore che il consumismo tende ad annientare e che, in tutta la sua storia, l’arte ha mirato a realizzare come standard di tutto un sistema di valori, precisamente i valori estetici.

Non è teoricamente certo che una cultura dei consumi non possa in futuro postulare valori che non siano in contraddizione col suo attuale sistema; sta di fatto che, da parte di taluni artisti, v’è un chiaro intento di superare la contraddizione recuperando il valore estetico all’interno dell’attuale sistema di produzione-consumo.

Mi limiterò a cercare di vedere la finalità comune di parecchi indirizzi di ricerca diversamente caratterizzati.

Poiché la serialità della produzione industriale è teoricamente illimitata, è certamente possibile stabilire costi e prezzi, apparentemente impossibile definire valori oggettuali. Ciò che mi pare comune agli artisti, anche molto differenti tra loro, che dalla pittura e dalla scultura giungono al design, non è tanto un’invenzione d’immagine quanto la ricerca di una qualità al di là della tipologia e iconologia della produzione industriale di serie, o di standard. Da quella tipologia e iconologia non avrebbero potuto estraniarsi senza uscire dal sistema, che invece intendono correggere dall’interno. E come? Ritrovando al di là dell'immagine una possibilità di ricerca qualitativa così nelle materie come nel disegno e nella lavorazione. Mutare radicalmente il fattore linguistico avrebbe significato revocare ogni possibilità di comunicazione visiva: è sfatata l’utopia del Bauhaus di educare la gente mediante i mobili di casa o d’ufficio.

Semmai la ricerca di una qualità dell’oggetto al di là della sua immagine è una sorta di rieducazione, di recupero di un fare inventivo, che fu proprio dell’arte e come tale pareva perduto per sempre.

Dal sistema economico e tecnologico che ha creato, il mondo moderno è affascinato e impaurito: potrebbe inutilizzare l’intelletto, destituire la morale, revocare in tutti i campi ogni libertà di scelta. Non immotivatamente si teme il meccanismo della serialità che, per quantificare, dequalifica.

Quantità e qualità erano termini opposti, ma correlati; una volta annullato l’equilibrio di bisogno e consumo cade il rapporto logico di causa ed effetto, e per produrre un plus di consumo si annienta quel plus di valore oltre il bisogno che in tutta la storia del mondo fù l’arte. Non ci sarà più naturale passaggio dal singolo al molteplice: con la serialità universale cade ogni gerarchia di valori, ciascuna unità della serie sarà ad un tempo una e infinita, archetipo e copia.

La serialità è incompatibile con l’autenticità dell’oggetto come del soggetto.

L’arte è istituzionalmente autenticità pura: facendo e fruendo arte il mondo ha istituito e conservato l'idea e il valore dell’autentico come condizione dell’essere. Gli artisti

It is known that consumerism is founded on image information and communication intended to upset the logical equilibrium o f need and consumption. The system stimulates the circulation and consumption o f images, making the consumpt ion o f the object a secondary effect o f the consumption o f the images. But at this point there arises the problem o f the values that consumerism tends to destroy and which art, throughout its history, has sought to establish as the basis o f a whole system o f value: aesthetic values. It is by no means theoretically certain that a consumption culture could not in the future postulate values contradictory to its present system. And it is a fact that there is the intention, on the part o f a number o f artists, to overcome the contradiction by re-establishing aesthetic values inside the present system of production-consumption.

I shall confine myself to trying to identify the common purposes o f several lines o f research with differen t characteristics. Since industrial mass production is theoretically unlimited, it is certainly possible to establish costs and prices, apparently impossible to define object values.

What it seems to me that artists, even very differen t from each other, coming from painting and sculpture to industrial design have in common, is not so much the invention o f images as the search for a quality lying outside the typology and the iconology o f serial or standard industrial production.

They could not have rejected that typology and iconology without abandoning the system, which they aim instead to correct from within. And how? By finding beyond the image a possibility o f qualitative research with regard to the materials, the design, the manufacturing process. A radical change o f the linguistic factor would have meant revoking all possibility of visual communication: the Bauhaus idea o f educating people by means o f domestic and office furniture proved to be Utopian. I f anything, the search for a quality o f the object beyond its image is a sort o f re-education, o f recovery o f an inventive method that was characteristic o f art and as such seemed to have been lost fo r ever.

The modern world is fascinated and frightened by the economic and technological system it has created: it could disuse the intelligence, nullify morality, revoke all freedom of choice in every field. There is reason to fear the mechanism of a seriality which, to quantify, disqualifies. Quantity and quality were terms that were opposite but correlated; once the equilibrium o f need and consumption is cancelled, so is the logical relationship o f cause and effect; to produce more consumption one destroys that extra value, over and above what is needed, which throughout history has always been art.

There will no longer be a natural passage from the single to the many: universal seriality means the end o f every hierarchy o f values, each unit o f the series will be at once one and infinity, archetype and copy. Seriality is incompatible with the

Attravèrso la ricreazione intellettuale dell’oggetto seriale ricreano l’individualità del soggetto: fruire oggetti rilavorati dall’arte significa riproporre il valore della comunicazione intersoggettiva, che la serialità della produzione industriale tende a eliminare. Il designer artista non comunica altro che il proprio essere artista, la propria attitudine a inventare e inventarsi, e così riporta l'invenzione ad un progettare che altrimenti potrebbe ridursi a mero calcolo. Modestamente gli artisti non vogliono comunicare un proprio genio ispirato, ma un proprio autentico modo di essere e fare. Non generano, rigenerano il mondo, gli oggetti che disegnano, rimangono realtà economiche, prodotti, merci. Ma tutti sanno che il produrre e il consumare sono atti economici come il comprare e il vendere, dunque fruire un oggetto fatto dall'arte è un atto artistico come il fare arte. L’oggetto seriale reinventato dall’artista sollecita una critica e un giudizio che liberano l’utente dall’obbligo del consumo obbligato, irriflessivo, idiota. Che cosa mai, se non l'arte, fabbrica cose che possono essere consumate senza essere distrutte? I designer-artisti e gli artisti-designers sono oggi i soli custodi della qualità in un mondo che va quantificandosi: la qualità di un oggetto reinventato dall’arte trapassa nell’utente, lo rigenera, gli dona una capacità inventiva. Tende proprio a questo la ricerca d’esatto matematico portata avanti dalla parte migliore degli artisti moderni, che così vogliono riscattare il calcolo all’invenzione. L’artista che fa cose che servono a vivere non è nè vuol essere un pedagogo. Il rischio della scolastica c’è anche nella progettazione industriale, e c’è chi ci casca, ma sbaglia: non si progetta senza far critica dell’esistente, e non c’è critica senza una componente ironica. I designers-artisti ironizzano il design obbediente alle leggi del consumo sempre e comunque: ha l’ironia nella sua storia, quella di Klee, di Duchamp, di Man Ray, di Magritte.

authenticity o f the object as o f the subject.

Art is institutionally pure authenticity: by producing and enjoying art the world instituted and has conserved the idea and the value o f the authentic as a condition o f life. Artists are neither angels nor demiurges, they live the life o f their time; they certainly do not aim to stop or slow down the world’s becoming, they do not consider themselves benefactors and saviours o f humanity: they simply reject consumption as an end in itself and so propose, beyond consumption, a new value o f being, o f doing, o f using. By means o f the intellectual re­ creation o f the serial object, they re-create the individuality of the subject: to enjoy objects re-made by art is to re-propose the value o f inter-subjective communication, which the seriality o f industrial production tends to eliminate. The artist-designer does not communicate other than that he is an artist, his gift for invention and for inventing himself, and in this way he brings back invention to a designing that otherwise could reduce itself to mere calculation. Modestly, the artists seek to communicate not inspired genius, but simply their authentic way o f being and doing. They do not generate, regenerate the world; the objects they design remain economic realities, products, goods.

But everyone knows that producing and consuming are economic acts like buying and selling, and thus to enjoy an object made by art is an artistic act, like producing art.

The serial object re-invented by the artist solicits a criticism and a judgement which frees the userfrom a consumption which is compulsory, thoughtless, idiotic. What else if not art produces things that can be consumed without being destroyed? The artist-designers and the designer-artists are today the only custodians o f quality in a world which is quantifying itself: the quality o f an object re-invented by art passes into the user, regenerates him, gives him an inventive capacity. This is the aim o f the research o f mathematical exactitude carried out by the better part o f modern artists, who seek in this way to restore calculation to invention. The artist -who makes things useful for living is not, nor does he wish to be, a pedagogue. There is the risk o f scholasticism also in industrial design, and there are some who succumb, which is a pity: one does not design without criticizing what already exists, and there is no criticism without a part o f irony. The artist-designers are ironical towards an industrial design always blindly obedient to the laws o f the market: there is irony in its history, the irony o f Klee, o f Duchamp, o f Man Ray, o f Magritte.

Arte e design: alcune considerazioni generali

Il rapporto tra l’attività progettuale e l’arte è sempre stato al centro del dibattito di questo secolo, soprattutto dopo la definizione di design che la pratica e la teoria di questa disciplina hanno contribuito a produrre; in particolar modo, dall’esperienza della Bauhaus e della Scuola di Ulm provengono le sollecitazioni più precise per quanto riguarda l’intreccio complesso ma decisivo, tra ricerca artistica e il problema della serialità.

Da questo punto di vista, uno dei contributi più chiari e decisivi per definire il significato del termine design è quello presentato da Tomàs Maldonado al Congresso ICSID di Venezia del 1961: “in questa definizione si accettava che il compito del disegno industriale consistesse nel progettare la forma del prodotto. C’è però una differenza fondamentale rispetto a un orientamento esclusivamente formalistico: il disegno industriale non era inteso come un’attività progettuale che prende le mosse esclusivamente da un’idea aprioristica sul valore estetico della forma, come un’attività progettuale le cui motivazioni si situano prima, e al di fuori, del processo costitutivo della forma stessa. Vi si proponeva, al contrario, un disegno industriale che deve svolgere il suo compito all’interno di questo processo e la cui finalità è la concretizzazione di un individuo tecnico”.® È fondamentale, perché una determinata area della progettazione sia accettata in quanto intervento specialistico e quindi necessario, una sorta di limitazione disciplinare, anche se questo non deve significare una totale chiusura nei riguardi di tutti quei contributi culturali che provengono da altre esperienze linguistiche.

In un sistema culturale e sociale dove la tendenza dominante è quella del rimescolamento delle arti e dei linguaggi, il tutto depositato in una memoria verbale e visiva senza tempo nè spazio, è prioritario ricollocare ogni attività culturale all’intemo del proprio specifico espressivo; anche se questa opzione progettuale, nel segno di una rinnovata razionalità, non dovrebbe mai impedire a priori un possibile scambio tra luoghi espressivi diversi.

Tra arte e design si sono consumati, purtroppo, in questi ultimi anni ’80, innumerevoli atteggiamenti indifferenziati, nel senso che è stato sempre difficile distinguere, e quindi separare, la funzione semantica, operativa, da quella di carattere più strettamente estetico. Tutto è avvenuto in un vorticoso cambiamento di ruoli e di poetiche (forse proprio per impedire una precisa definizione e collocazione disciplinare) ai lini di un’acritica accettazione dei prodotti che, in virtù di un’eccentricità soltanto formale, venivano facilmente accettati come un contributo fortemente originale

The relationship between industrial design and art has always been the centre o f debate in this century, above all after the definition o f design that the practice and theory of this discipline have contributed to produce; in particular, the experience o f the Bauhaus and the Ulm School has provided the most precise indications concerning the interconnection, complex but decisive, o f artistic research and the problem of seriality.

From this point o f view, one o f the clearest and most decisive contributions serving to define the meaning o f the term design was made by Tomas Maldonado at the ICSID Congress at Venice in 1961: “in this definition it was accepted that the function o f industrial design consisted in planning the form o f the product. There is, however, a fundamental difference from an exclusively formalistic orientation: industrial design was not seen as a planning activity starting exclusively from an aprioristic idea o f the aesthetic value of the form, a planning activity the motivations o f which came before, and outside, the process o f constituting the form itself.

What was proposed, on the contrary, was an industrial design that performed its function in the interior o f this process, with the purpose o f realizing a technical individual”/ 1> For a determined area o f design to be accepted as a specialized, and therefore necessary, intervention, a sort o f disciplinary limitation is o f fundamental importance, even though this should not signify the total exclusion o f all those cultural contributions that come from other linguistic experiences. In a cultural and social system in which the dominant tendency is that o f the mixing o f the arts and languages, the whole deposited in a verbal and, above all, visual memory without time or space, it is o f primary importance to restore each cultural activity to its own specific expressive place, even though this proposition, tending towards a renewed rationality, should never impede a priori a possible exchange between different expressive domains.

Between art and industrial design there developed, unfortunately, in the late 1980s, innumerable undifferentiated attitudes, in the sense that it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish, and thus to separate, the semantic, operative, function from that o f more strictly aesthetic character.

All this took place in a whirl o f changes of roles and poetics (perhaps in order to impede a precise disciplinary definition and collocation) that served to favour an indiscriminate acceptance ofproducts which, by virtue o f a merely formal eccentricity, could easily be taken to represent originality of design.

Abbiamo assistito frequentemente a questo scambio di ruoli e di funzioni, dimenticando che qualsiasi attività progettuale deve guardare, per definizione, al futuro, senza con questo dimenticare le proprie radici, storiche e disciplinari. “Non c’è modernità senza critica e superamento del passato, e non c’è superamento senza finalità, finalità senza intenzionalità, intenzionalità che non si traduca in progetto. 11 rifiuto del superamento è il rifiuto della progettualità”*2*; il significato del termine superamento non può essere ridotto a un semplice gioco formale, a una sorta di astuzia della ragione, di memoria hegeliana, nel campo delle arti e del progetto. La furbizia ha il fiato corto perché presenta una soluzione del problema parlando il linguaggio esclusivo della superficie, come se tutto fosse riconducibile a una logica spettacolare di pura epidermicità.

Il design non può essere un testo dove è possibile ogni combinazione linguistica, per la semplice ragione che la sua attività progettuale non potrà mai essere autoreferenziale, visto che il suo destino appartiene agli interpreti, a coloro i quali poi dovranno relazionarsi con i suoi codici, con i suoi prodotti reali, concreti, tangibili: “quando un’attività progettuale diventa bricolage, il limite tra l’intenzionalità individuale e l’esigenza di una semanticità fondata su un determinato dizionario, diventa confuso, sempre valicabile da chiunque, proprio perché è stata abbandonata la ragione, intesa come l’insieme delle risposte storiche degli uomini”.*3* Tra le risposte storiche degli uomini, l’arte occupa uno spazio centrale, non tanto nell’indicare le vie pratiche della soluzione dei problemi degli uomini, quanto come insieme di esperienze, formali e materiali, che vanno sempre al di là di un puro e semplice principio di realtà, ma che comunque appartengono, a tutti gli effetti, all’evoluzione linguistica della società. Voglio dire che, se non è possibile separare nettamente progetto da arte, perché ambedue sono attività nel segno di un’intenzionalità che si coniuga con il ciò che sarà e non si appiattisce mai passivamente sull’esistente, così ' non è per nulla accettabile confondere il ruolo e la finalità delle due discipline, design ed arte, intese, in questo caso, come contributo specifico per la soluzione dei problemi dell’uomo.

La semanticità di un’opera d’arte è da sempre collocabile dopo la sua funzione estetica e poetica, come veniva definita da Roman Jakobson nei suoi “Saggi di linguistica generale”: “nella funzione estetica il messaggio riveste una particolare finalità, in quanto si presenta come strutturato in modo ambiguo, apparendo autoriflessivo. Intende cioè attirare l’attenzione del destinatario innanzitutto sulla propria forma”.*4* La semanticità, invece, determina in modo forte la forma di un oggetto destinato a risolvere una particolare funzione

functions, forgetting that every planning activity, by definition, must look to the future, without for this reason forgetting its roots, historical and disciplinary.

“There is no modernity without criticism and surpassing o f the past and there is no surpassing without purpose, purpose without intentionality, intentionality that does not become plan. To refuse to surpass is the rejection o f planning”,2>; the meaning o f the term surpassing cannot be reduced to a simple formal game, a sort o f trick o f the reason, o f Hegelian memory. And craftiness in the field o f art and project has a short life because it presents a solution speaking the language only o f surface, as if a spectacular logic o f pure epidermicity was all that counted.

Industrial design cannot be a text in which it is possible to mix every linguistic combination, for the simple reason that its planning activity can never be self-referential, given that its destiny belongs to the interpreters, to those who will then have to relate themselves to its codes, to its real, concrete, tangible products: “when designing becomes bricolage, the boundary between individual intentionality and the need for a semanticity founded on a definite dictionary becomes confused and may be traversed by all, because reason, in the sense of the body o f historical responses o f men, has been abandoned”J3> Among the historical responses o f men, art occupies a central space, not so much because it indicates practical ways fo r the solution o f the problems o f men, but because it is a body of experiences, formal and material, which always go beyond the pure and simple principle o f reality and yet belong in every respect to the linguistic evolution o f society.

What I want to say is th a t, if it is not possible clearly to separate industrial design and art, because both are activities o f an intentionality that is connected with what will be and never adapt themselves passively to what already exists, neither should one confuse the role and purpose of the two disciplines, in the sense, in this case, o f their specific contribution to the solution o f the problems o f man.

The semanticity o f a ivork o f art should always be considered subordinate to its poetic, aesthetic function, as Roman Jakobson defined it in his Essays on General Linguistics: “in the aesthetic function the message has a particular purpose, in that it presents itself as if structured in an ambiguous manner, appearing self-reflective. It intends, that is, to draw attention above all to its own form ”J4> The form o f an object serving to resolve a particular function of man, on the other hand, is largely determined by its semanticity, even though this attitude is never immune to the aesthetic value that the object itself is able to produce independently o f the intentions o f its maker. In industrial design, the two intentionalities, aesthetic and semantic, must be present from the beginning o f the productive process, so that

dell’uomo, anche se non è mai immune, questo atteggiamento, dal valore estetico che lo stesso oggetto è in grado di produrre, indipendentemente dalle intenzioni di chi l'ha realizzato. Nel disegno industriale, le due intenzionalità, estetiche e semantiche, devono essere presenti fin dall’inizio del processo produttivo perchè la bellezza non rimanga una "categoria dello spirito", che, liberamente, ciascuno degli interpreti possa far agire nella direzione di quella determinata esperienza, senza coniugarla per nulla con la filosofia progettuale di chi ha ideato e costruito quell’oggetto particolare.

Troppo spesso, in questi ultimi anni di cultura postmoderna, il designer ha abbandonato la sua specificità professionale, teorizzando, ma soprattutto praticando, un atteggiamento produttivo che avrebbe voluto segnare la conclusione dell’itinerario creativo; il tutto all’interno di una poetica sincronica e totalmente disgiunta da un destino chiaro e definito per ogni singolo oggetto, ma anche per l’intero sistema delle merci.

In questo modo si è alimentalo un rapporto generico con l’esperienza artistica, sovrapponendo l’attività progettuale del design (e dell’architettura) a quella della ricerca e della produzione artistica, lasciando completamente sullo sfondo della questione, invece, una corretta e stimolante relazione tra autonomia della forma e finalità semantica della stessa, tra linguaggio autoreferenziale, costantemente presente nell’oggetto artistico, e orizzonte performativo e pratico, insito in qualsiasi oggetto, ideato e realizzato per assolvere una necessità, esterna alla propria dimensione simbolica.

Lo scrivere, lo stare seduti e sdraiati, rappresentano alcune situazioni comuni a tutti gli uomini, indipendentemente dalla soluzione estetica che potremmo dare a questa particolare necessità, storica e naturale; ma se premettiamo a questa necessità storica e naturale, una sorta di apriori estetico, che appartiene all’orizzonte linguistico della mia ipotesi di arte, è chiaro che alla fine del processo creativo trasferiremo, narcisisticamente, un'identità simbolica e formale individuale che presenta l’ambizione di diventare universale, quando, invece, questa dimensione generale dovrebbe appartenere a un codice, e quindi a un dizionario, già presente, già operante in quella determinata società.

La violenza di una gestualità gratuita, che diventa serialità all’interno della produzione industriale delle forme, costituisce, forse, il maggiore limite di una filosofia progettuale che, nel nome di una ingiustificata libertà spirituale, trasforma il designer in artista, penalizzando così sia l’attesa dell’interprete, sia, soprattutto, quella classificazione delle discipline e dei ruoli che rappresenta una delle condizioni fondamentali della nostra modernità.

“Quando l’industria avrà totalmente esaurito la funzione

beauty does not remain a “category o f the spirit” that each of the interpreters may freely apply in the direction o f that determined experience, without associating it in any way with the design philosophy o f the ideator and constructor o f that particular object.

Too often in these recent years o f Post-modern culture, the designer has abandoned his professional specificity and theorized, but above all put into effect, a productive attitude that seeks to mark the conclusion o f the creative itinerary, the whole in the context o f a synchronic poetic totally regardless of a clear and definite destination for each single object, and also for the whole system o f commodities.

In this way there has developed a generic relationship with the artistic experience, superimposing the planning activity of industrial design (and architecture) on that o f artistic research and production, while relegating to the background the question o f a correct and stimulating relationship between autonomy o f form and the semantic purpose o f the same, between the self-referential language constantly present in the artistic object and the aspect o f performance and practical use necessarily present in any object ideated and realized to fulfil a purpose external to its own symbolic dimension.

Writing, sitting down, lying down represent situations common to all men, irrespective o f the aesthetic solution we adopt to meet this historical and natural need; but if we subject this historical and natural need to a sort o f a priori aesthetic condition, which belongs to the linguistic horizon of my hypothesis o f art, it is clear that at the end o f the creative process we will give it, narcissistically, an individual symbolic and formal identity that has the ambition to become universal, when, instead, this general dimension should belong to a code, and thus a dictionary, already present, already operative in that particular society.

A gratuitous violence o f gesture, rendered serial by the industrial production o f forms, constitutes, perhaps, the greatest limitation o f a design philosophy that, in the name of an unjustified spiritual freedom, transforms the designer into artist, thus disappointing the expectations o f the interpreter and, above all, impeding that classification o f disciplines and roles which represents one o f the fundamental conditions of our modernity. “When industry performs completely the function o f the craftsman and transformation is perfect, every worker will share in the productive rationality o f industry and every job will be a skilled job: that day will mark the final victory o f social rationality over political irrationality.

Naturally there will not be evolution and transformation if industry, instead o f assimilating craft, overwhelms it with the weigh t o f its own mechanical organization: for this reason the teaching o f the Bauhaus is adjusted to the rhythm o f a gradual development from the tool to the machine”{5>; this reflection o f Giulio Carlo Argan refers to the experience of

dell’artigianato e la trasformazione sarà perfetta, ogni lavoratore parteciperà della razionalità produttiva dell’industria e ogni lavoro sarà lavoro qualificato: quel giorno segnerà la vittoria definitiva della razionalità sociale sull’irrazionalismo politico. Naturalmente non vi sarà evoluzione e trasformazione se l’industria, invece di assimilare Partigianato, lo soverchierà col peso della propria organizzazione meccanica: perciò la didattica della Bauhaus è regolata sul ritmo di uno sviluppo graduale dall’utensile alla macchina”*5*; questa riflessione di Giulio Carlo Argan fa riferimento all’esperienza di Walter Gropius e la Bauhaus, ma io credo che non sia fuori luogo affermare che lo sviluppo della produzione nella direzione della macchina, intesa come luogo complesso di funzioni, debba essere ancora al centro dell’attività del disegno industriale.

Ma se la macchina non si rapporta con il linguaggio dell’arte, nel senso di un recupero della sua dimensione propriamente estetica e autoreferenziale, il risultato finale non sarebbe in grado di risolvere il trasferimento, nell’oggetto d’uso, di tutti quei linguaggi che sollecitano la nostra produzione fantastica e simbolica.

Certamente il design è destinato alla soluzione dei problemi del nostro esistere, individuale e sociale; ma se viene immolata, a causa di una definizione ristretta di funzionalità, l’apertura linguistica verso altri possibili significati, allora il paesaggio che avremmo di fronte sarebbe desolante e, soprattutto, esclusivamente finalizzato a una dimensione pratica e operativa.

Questa è la ragione per cui il rapporto tra arte pura e arte applicata deve essere sempre al centro di chi progetta e produce artefatti comunicativi, altrimenti lo scambio dei ruoli e quindi la confusione disciplinare, provocherebbero una serie di effetti, non tanto trasgressivi, quanto destinati alla definizione di forme e strutture inutili e sovrabbondanti, dove la funzione estetica si presenterebbe sotto un significato pratico e operativo, mentre quella semantica potrebbe assumere il ruolo di esperienza artistica. Tutti si sentirebbero dei piccoli Duchamp, e nessuno sarebbe in grado, avendo abbandonato l’umiltà di riconoscere la pura e semplice funzione di un oggetto, di avere un rapporto razionale con lo stesso.

La C ollezione ABV La Collezione ABV è la manifestazione più recente di una cultura aziendale Borsani, che risale a molti decenni prima della Tecno. È la cultura del dialogo tra l’architetto e l'artista, che fondono nell’unico oggetto - un arredamento, un mobile, un elemento architettonico - le rispettive metodiche e competenze. Con questa cultura Osvaldo Borsani coinvolgeva, per alcuni dei suoi progetti, artisti come

Walter Gropius and the Bauhaus, but I think it would not be out o f place to say that the development ofproduction in the direction o f the machine, in the sense o f a complex site of functions, should still be the centre o f the activity o f industrial design.

But i f the machine does not relate to the language o f art, in the sense o f recovering its aesthetic and self-referential dimension, the fin a l result will be unable to resolve the transfer, to the useful object, o f all the languages that solicit our production o f fantasy and symbols.

Certainly, the purpose o f industrial design is the solution of problems o f our existence, individual and social; but were the linguistic opening towards other possible significations to be sacrificed because o f a narrow definition o f functionality, then the prospects would be desolating and, above all, confined to an exclusively practical and operative dimension.

That is the reason fo r ivhich the relationship between pure and applied art must always be central for anyone designing and producing communicative artefacts, because otherwise the exchange o f roles, and thus the disciplinary confusion, will give rise to a series o f effects not so much transgressive as destined to define useless and superfluous forms and structures, where the aesthetic function would appear in the guise o f practical and operative signification, while the semantic function could assume the role o f artistic experience.

Everyone would feel he was a little Duchamp and, humility in recognizing its pure and simple function having been abandoned, no one would be able to have a rational relationship with an object.

The "C ollezione ABV" The “Collezione ABV” is the most recent manifestation o f a Borsani company tradition going back decades before the birth o f Tecno and consisting in the cultivation o f a dialogue between architect and artist in order to unite their respective methods and skills fo r the purpose o f producing a single object, whether a scheme o f interior decoration, an article o f furniture, an architectural element. It was in this spirit that Osvaldo Borsani involved in some o f his projects artists such as Lucio Fontana, Agenore Fabbri, Fausto Melotti, Arnaldo and Gid Pomodoro and Aligi Sassu etc. and realized furnishings that testify to an incomparable cultural experience. ABV today presents a series o f useful objects designed by nine artists, each identifiable in the context o f his own poetic and, above all, o f his definition o f “practicality”, in the sense that each artist has solved a practical problem o f his own and offered his solution to other interpreters, who, generally speaking, are not artists.

It is not a matter o f a simple change o f roles and functions: the collection is also, and above all, a declaration of

Lucio Fontana, Agenore Fabbri, Fausto Melotti, Arnaldo e Giò Pomodoro, Aligi Sassu, ecc., e realizzava arredi che testimoniano un’esperienza culturale senza confronti. Oggi ABV presenta una serie di oggetti d'uso, disegnati da nove artisti, ciascuno identificabile all’interno della propria poetica e, soprattutto, della propria definizione di "praticità”, nel senso che ogni artista ha risolto un proprio problema pratico, offrendo poi questa soluzione ad altri interpreti, che in genere artisti non sono.

Non è un semplice passaggio di ruoli e di funzioni: tutta la collezione è anche, e soprattutto, una dicharazione di poetica, nel segno del rilancio di una razionalità progettuale che non dimentica nè emargina le fonti ineliminabili della creazione: l’arte e le sue ricerche linguistiche.

“Arte pura ed arte applicata avevano mantenuto tra loro un rapporto armonico, interdisciplinare, collaborando alla creazione di un’unica grande opera, fino alla fine del secolo scorso, quando le cose cambiano, con l’avvento della civiltà industriale. Le mutate condizioni sociali portano ad una radicale trasformazione della committenza: da colta, personalizzata, elitaria, ad anonima, vasta, imitativa di comportamenti fino ad allora irraggiungibili dal ceto medio.

Si è venuta così a creare la necessità di una produzione di oggetti meno specifica, e il divario tra arti e mestieri è stato inevitabile. E per questo che un artista puro disdegna di creare un oggetto d’uso, mentre artisti-artigiani, eccellenti per creatività e mestiere, si rammaricano di non essere considerati artisti puri... Sembrava che più nulla potesse essere fatto su questa strada di estrema sintesi costruttiva e decorativa. È probabilmente questa la ragione per cui, verso gli anni Settanta, e sempre in sintonia con quanto avveniva in pittura e scultura, si è verificata un’inversione di tendenza che ha prodotto un rinnovamento dell’immagine dell’arredamento per lo più improntata sulla trasgressione visiva architettata in ambito post-moderno. È stata operata una commistione delle discipline di architettura pittura e scultura, in chiave intenzionalmente ludica, certamente dissacratoria”(6); perché, invece, il design e l’arte possano collaborare, ciascuna disciplina all’interno della sua identità teorica e pratica, senza creare situazioni ed esperienze di confusione nei ruoli e nei destini simbolici, è necessario riandare alle fonti delle attività creative e progettuali.

Questo è il primo, fondamentale significato della proposta ABV della Tecno: offrire la propria cultura industriale e, soprattutto, la propria tradizione estetica e semantica, a nove progetti di altrettanti artisti, senza mai intervenire nella libertà della scelta, senza mai chiedere un surplus di estetica ma, nel rispetto dei disegni originali, offrendo un corpo industriale a una serie di desideri di oggetti d’uso, fino allora tenuti segretamente nei cassetti degli stessi artisti.

Il sogno della merce può appartenere alla dimensione

poetics, in the cause o f a revival o f a rationality o f design that neither forgets no excludes the perennial sources o f creation: art and its linguistic researches.

“Pure art and applied art had maintained a harmonious, interdisciplinary relationship, collaborating in the creation of a single great work, until the end o f the last century, when, with the advent o f industrial civilization, the changes in social conditions radically transformed the clientele from refined, personalized, elitist to anonymous, vast and imitative of behaviours hitherto beyond the possibilities o f the middle classes. This led to a need fo r a less specific production of objects and the separation o f art and crafts became inevitable: the pure artist disdained to create a useful object, while the artist-craftsman, creative as well as skilled in his craft, resented the fact that he was not considered a pure artist...

It seemed that nothing further could be done in the way of extreme constructive and decorative synthesis. It was probably for this reason that, towards the 1970s, always in syntony with what was happening in the fields ofpainting and sculpture, there was an inversion o f tendency which led to a renovation of the image o f furnishing that was mainly characterized by the visual transgression favoured by the post-modern movement.

The disciplines o f architecture, painting and sculpture were blended together in a vein which was intentionally ludic and certainly profane. ”,a-) However, fo r industrial design and art to be able to collaborate, each discipline according to its theoretical and practical identity, without giving rise to situations and experiences o f confusion o f roles and symbolic destinations, it is necessary to return to the sources o f creative and designing activities.

This is the fundamental significance ofTecno’s ABV proposal: to place its industrial culture and, above all, its aesthetic and semantic tradition at the disposal o f nine projects o f the same number o f artists, without interfering with freedom o f choice, without soliciting a surplus o f aesthetic quality, but respecting the original designs and seeking to give an industrial body to a series o f desires concerning useful objects hitherto kept hidden away in secret drawers.

A dream o f commodities can belong to the artistic dimension without any impairment o f spiritual freedom. By means o f this extraordinary because unique collaboration o f art and production, ABV propagates a commodity dream, giving a concrete industrial form to objects that express, at the same time, a practical function, common to all o f us, and the unrepeatable testimony o f a particular formal and symbolic intuition.

Luigi V eronesi Symptomatic, from this point o f view, is Luigi Veronesi’s

artistica senza con questo essere lesivo nei riguardi della propria libertà spirituale; ABV diffonde, attraverso questa straordinaria perché unica collaborazione tra arte e produzione, un sogno della merce, dando una forma concreta e industriale ad oggetti che esprimono, contemporaneamente, una funzione pratica, appartenente a tutti noi, insieme alla testimonianza irripetibile di una particolare intuizione formale e simbolica.

Luigi V eronesi È sintomatica, da questo punto di vista, la proposta di Luigi Veronesi: la scrivania “Costruzione”, realizzata come pezzo unico in casa dallo stesso Veronesi nel 1934. È un mobile nato nel privato: “serviva a me, questo mobile. Ho cercato di farlo secondo le mie idee funzionali e razionali; l’ho ancora... L’idea del razionalismo e funzionalismo è che un oggetto pensato funzionalmente e razionalmente è automaticamente bello”.*71. Lo scrittoio con cassettiera e portafogli è uno straordinario omaggio, oltre che alla coerenza estetica di Veronesi da sempre alla ricerca di una semplicità formale al servizio della ragione e del cuore dell’uomo, anche a una dimensione, finalmente idonea per le attività intellettuali. Pensare significa raccogliere alLinterno di un contenitore gli strumenti della produzione delle idee.

Questa è una scrivania che ci riporta alle giuste proporzioni che ogni oggetto dovrebbe possedere, se vuole parlare il linguaggio della chiarezza e delle funzioni.

Non è casuale il fatto che Luigi Veronesi sia l’artista italiano più vicino, per formazione e per attività professionale, alla grande tradizione del Costruttivismo internazionale: questa scrivania mi ricorda gli indimenticabili manifesti dedicati alla ricostruzione dell’Italia del secondo dopoguerra, dove Veronesi, sovrapponendo ad alcune fotografie in bianco e nero della cronaca politica di quegli anni una serie di trasparenze cromatiche (il tutto realizzato con le povere tecnologie che la tipografia in quel periodo era in grado di offrire), otteneva un effetto di coinvolgimento, emotivo e razionale, senza emarginare nè offuscare il tema centrale della comunicazione.

In questo senso il controllo della ragione, nell’attività progettuale, ai fini di una soluzione formale, adeguata e per nulla sovrabbondante alle necessità pratiche dell’oggetto, apre alcuni sqarci interpretativi, altrimenti abbandonati a una sorta di creatività in libera uscita.

Lo stesso titolo dell’opera, che è anche il nome del prodotto, “Costruzione”, è una dichiarazione di intenti progettuali, nel rispetto soprattutto della dimensione industriale che un oggetto privato assume, quando entra nel catalogo di una produzione seriale, teoricamente infinita.

The idea o f rationalism and functionalism is that an object conceived functionally and rationally is automatically beautiful”(7>.

The desk, with drawers and paper-holder, is an extraordinary homage not only to the aesthetic coherence o f Veronesi, always in search o f a formal simplicity at the service o f m an’s reason and his heart, but also to a dimension finally suitable for intellectual activities. To think means to collect inside a container the instruments for the production o f ideas. This is a desk that reminds us o f the correct proportions every object should have i f it is to speak the language o f clarity and functions.

It is no accident that Luigi Veronesi is the Italian artist closest, in terms o f formation and professional activity, to the great tradition o f international Constructivism: this desk reminds me o f the unforgettable posters dedicated to the reconstruction o f Italy in the post-war period, in which Veronesi superimposed, on a background o f black and white political news’photographs o f the period, a series o f chromatic transparencies (making use o f the primitive technologies that the typographers o f the period were able to offer), obtaining an effect o f emotional and rational involvement, without marginalizing or obfuscating the central theme o f the communication.

In this sense an activity o f designing which is controlled by the reason in its quest o f a formal solution adequate and in no way superfluous to the practical purposes o f the object, opens a number o f interpretative possibilities that would otherwise be left to a sort o f creativity out on the spree.

The title of his works, which is also the nam e o f the product, “Costruzione” is a declaration o f design intent, respectful, above all, o f the industrial dimension that a private object assumes when it en ters the catalogue o f a serial production that is theoretically infinite.

A rn aldo P o m o d o ro The memory o f an artist, plundering his expressive potentialities, can give industrial form also to a function that belongs to other historical and cultural horizons; it is art that introduces into the cycle o f serial production some solicitations that bring back to light symbolic realities ivhich seemed to have disappeared from our behavioural dictionaries and codes.

Arnaldo Pomodoro has worked in precisely this direction in the case o f his “Triclinio”, an object which is above all a form charged with memory and possibilities o f new linguistic processes, the whole, as in all Pomodoro’s creative work,

Arnaldo P om od oro La memoria di un artista, saccheggiando le sue potenzialità espressive, può dare forma industriale anche ad una funzione che apparteneva ad altri orizzonti storici e culturali; è l’arte che introduce, nel ciclo della produzione seriale, alcune sollecitazioni che riportano alla luce realtà simboliche che sembravano scomparse dai nostri dizionari e codici di comportamento.

Arnaldo Pomodoro è intervenuto proprio in questa direzione con il suo “Triclinio”, un oggetto che è soprattutto una forma carica di memoria di possibili nuovi processi linguistici; il tutto, come sempre nell’attività creativa di Pomodoro, sotto un controllo vigile e analitico degli aspetti costruttivi, dei materiali, della tecnologia, perchè sia letta, effettivamente, questa unica seduta collettiva, come una sorta d’invito alla socializzazione: “io sono per la progettazione fantastica dell’oggetto d’uso, ma razionale insieme, cioè non solo scenografico. Quando penso a un mobile, penso subito alla sua funzionalità, poi alla sua forma. In questo caso, ho pensato a un letto-divano che può essere posto al centro di una stanza: un oggetto da usufruire con godimento da più persone. Un baldacchino alla maniera antica, con una forma massiccia e pesante, con una presenza precisa”.® In questo intervento progettuale di Pomodoro emergono due realtà problematiche di grandissimo interesse: da un lato il recupero della memoria storica, perché il triclinio appartiene alla nostra civiltà mediterranea, in un periodo storico come il nostro dove troppo spesso è prevalsa e tuttora prevale, la dimensione sincronica. Dall’altro lato, il ritorno, all’interno del nostro paesaggio domestico, di dimensioni precise e non ambigue, attraverso le quali transita, senza esitazioni, la materialità e quindi un concetto di modernità che non dimentica, appunto, le proprie radici storiche.

Giustamente il ruolo dell’artista nei riguardi di un’azienda deve essere sempre mantenuto a livello di parità, perché la capacità seriale della produzione possa accogliere, concretamente, le ipotesi di trasformazione che ogni gesto mentale e fisico dell’artista è in grado di proporre: come sottolinea lo stesso Pomodoro, “mi sembra che l’unica persona che abbia raggiunto risultati innovativi e felici nella progettazione sia Ettore Sottsass, che ha sempre pensato al mobile/oggetto che diventa presenza. Gli artisti sono spesso tenuti fuori dalla progettazione del mobile; alcuni non hanno risolto il compito felicemente, sono rimasti troppo legati al loro stile espressivo. Ma ci sono altri, invece, che hanno progettato pezzi validissimi e molto interessanti; per esempio Mario Ceroli con i tavoli e le sedie. La casa di Maurizio Calvesi a Roma né un esempio eccellente”.® Il trasferimento dei linguaggi è il grande problema dell'attività creativa e progettuale: è un’azione sempre in

carefully and analytically controlled with regard to its constructive, material and technological aspects, in order to enable this unique collective seat to be interpreted as a sort of invitation to socialize: “Ifavour an imaginative designing of the useful object which is also rational, not merely scénographie. When 1 think o f a piece o f furniture, I immediately think o f its functionality, then o f its form.

In this case, I thought o f a sofa that can be placed in the middle o f a room: an object that can be used with pleasure by a number o f persons. A “baldacchino” in the old manner, with a massive, heavy form and a precise presence”/ 8) In this venture o f Pomodoro into the field o f industrial design two problematical realities o f enormous interest emerge: on the one hand, the revival o f historical memory, since the triclinium belongs to our Mediterranean civilization, in a historical period like ours in which too often the synchronic dimension has prevailed and prevails; and, on the other, the return to our domestic scene o f precise, unique and unambiguous dimensions that allow the passage, without hesitations, of materiality and thus o f a concept o f modernity which does not ignore its historical roots.

Rightly, the role o f the artist with regard to an industry must be maintained at a level o f equality, if the serial capacity o f production is to avail itself in a concrete manner o f the hypotheses o f transformation that every mental and physical gesture o f the artist is able to propose: as Pomodoro himself has emphasized, “it seems to me that the only person to have obtained innovatory and felicitous results in industrial design is Ettore Sottsass, who has always thought o f the furniture/ object that becomes presence. Artists are often kept out of furniture design; some have not resolved the problem in a felicitous manner, they have remained too tied to their expressive style. But there are others who have designed very good and interesting pieces, for example Mario Ceroli’s tables and chairs. Maurizio Calvesi s house in Rome is an excellent example”/ 9) The t ransfer o f languages is the great problem o f creative and designing activities: it is an action always in precarious balance between aesthetic excess and functional, semantic requirements.

F rançois an d F rédéric M orellet, G etulio A lviani, J effrey S te ele François and Frédéric Morellet have designed a stainless steel table with a glass top, parallel to the floor, which communicates an effect o f instability because the so-called legs are asyntactic elements in terms o f furniture tradition. It is undoubtedly an example o f the successful integration o f two languages; it is as if art had entered silently into the production o f a traditional object, even obsolete in symbolic

precario equilibrio tra eccedenza estetica e necessità funzionali, semantiche.

François e F rédéric M orellet, G etulio Alviani, Jeffrey Steele François e Frédéric Morellet hanno realizzato un tavolo in acciaio inossidabile con piano di cristallo, che parallelo al pavimento comunica un effetto di instabilità, in quanto le gambe sono elementi asinlatlici rispetto alla tradizione dei mobili d’arredo. È senz’altro un esempio risolto di integrazione tra i due linguaggi; è come se l’arte entrasse silenziosamente nella produzione di un oggetto tradizionale, anche desueto a livello simbolico, e lo rivitalizzasse, senza comunque trasformare il suo ruolo fondamentale: il piano di appoggio su cui porre stabilmente gli oggetti. Soltanto all’interno di un ordine costituito e memorizzato, è possibile introdurre l’atto creativo, il nuovo; solo così è possibile rinnovare lo scenario consueto dei nostri oggetti quotidiani.

La collezione ABV presenta, da questo punto di vista, altre due soluzioni progettuali, nel segno dell’infrazione percettiva: il tavolo smontabile “1/2/3/4/5” di Getulio Alviani e il paravento a tre ante, “Orlando”, di Jeffrey Steele.

Il rinnovamento del parco degli oggetti che appartengono ai nostri paesaggi domestici, può anche transitare a livello percettivo, senza trasgredire le ragioni strutturali per le quali l’oggetto viene offerto agli interpreti; quando l’artista interviene con questa logica, e questo è il caso specifico sia di Steele che di Alviani, il risultato finale s’inserisce senz’altro nel sistema del design e delle sue regole costruttive. Ricordando la figura di Adriano Olivetti, come committente di grandi progetti di architettura, Marco Zanuso afferma che “tra i vari committenti che ho incontrato nella mia vita, Adriano Olivetti è stato quello che richiama più di ogni altro il detto del Filarete: l’architettura ha un padre e una madre; l’architetto è solo la madre, il padre è il committente”.(10) Potremmo affermare lo stesso concetto per quanto riguarda l’ideazione di questa collezione; la Tecno ha paternizzato queste nove avventure progettuali, inserendole, a tutti gli effetti, nella sua produzione e quindi nella sua immagine di azienda che da sempre privilegia la qualità del design.

Giò P on ti, Man Ray Anche il “Triposto” di Giò Ponti manifesta questo recupero della storia e, soprattutto, dell’intenzione del committente, inteso come padre dell’opera; infatti il sedile scrittoio fu disegnato nel 1967 per la stessa Tecno e presentato nel 1968. Questo progetto di Ponti è stato inserito nella serie ABV perchè appartiene allo stesso spirito

The “Collezione ABV ” also presents two other design solutions suggestive o f perceptive infraction: Getulio Alviani’s demountable table, “1/2/3/4/5”, and Jeffrey Steele’s three-part screen, “Orlando The renovation o f the stock o f objects belonging to the domestic scene can also touch the perceptive level without transgressing the structural reasons for which the object is offered to its interpreters; when this is the logic o f the artist’s intervention, as in the specific case o f Alviani and Steele, the fin a l result enters without question into the system o f industrial design and its constructive rules.

Commemorating the figure o f Adriano Olivetti, as the sponsor o f major architectural projects, Marco Zanuso declared that “o f all the clients / have encountered in my life, Adriano Olivetti was the one who more than any other brough t to mind the saying o f Filarete: architecture has a father and a mother; the architect is only the mother, the father is the client”/ 101 This can be said with regard to the ideation o f this collection; Tecno has fathered these adventures in industrial design, including them in every respect in its production and thus in its image, that o f a company which has always emphasized a high quality o f design.

Gib P o n ti, M an R a y Gid Ponti’s “Triposto” likewise represents a recovery o f history and, above all, o f the intentions o f the client, in the sense o f father o f the work; in fact the seat- desk was designed for Tecno in 1967 and presented in 1968. This example o f Ponti’s work was included in the ABV series because it belongs to the same area o f the spirit o f design as the extraordinary and magical “Armchair” in which Man Ray was often photographed: it is as i f one were able finally to touch some of the mythical places o f the artistic research o f this century.

In the case o f Man Ray, furnishing his apartment in New York was the first time he designed his own furniture, because “furniture is simply one aspect o f the chronic fabrication o f objects’^11/ Man Ray recalled his activity as a private designer, undertaken with his first wife, and, sitting in this arm-chair, we can too, for we are closer to experiences that belong to other historical and cultural horizons:”We started to fix up the apartment alone. We coloured the furniture. With raw silk stained in tea, we made the curtains and covered the divan.

The atmosphere was pleasant, comfortable, in short it was

Nel caso di Man Ray, l’arredo del suo appartamento a New York è stata la prima occasione per disegnare da sé i propri mobili, in quanto “il mobile non era che un aspetto della fabbricazione cronica di oggetti”*1". Ricorda Man Ray questa sua attività di privato intrapresa con la prima moglie, noi con lui su questa poltrona siamo più vicini ad esperienze che appartengono ad altri orizzonti storici e culturali: “abbiamo cominciato ad installare l’appartamento da soli. Abbiamo dipinto i mobili. Con della seta selvaggia tinta nel té, abbiamo fatto le tende e ricoperto il divano. L’atmosfera era simpatica, confortevole, in poche parole era più gradevole di quella degli altri appartamenti in cui avevamo abitato”.*12* A genore Fabbri, Carlo Mo Agenore Fabbri e Carlo Mo, rispettivamente con la panchina “Nastro di Gala” e il sedile “Chip” presentano due soluzioni diverse per una stessa necessità funzionale: il sedersi. La semplicità delle strutture formali aiutano sia la comprensione dei linguaggi degli oggetti sia la loro collocazione in spazi già progettati; voglio dire che sono oggetti di design che non sembrano avere una storia precedente. Una sorta di “basic design” della funzione primaria del riposo, che si arricchisce via via attraverso le trame delle diverse esperienze, dei diversi contesti d’uso, come se appartenessero, questi due oggetti, all’uomo naturale più che alle sua capacità culturali e storiche di trasformazione. La polivalenza simbolica è totalmente affidata agli utilizzatori di queste due diverse sedute; sia Fabbri che Mo si sono limitati a risolvere, nel modo più semplice ed ecologico possibile, uno dei problemi fondamentali della nostra esistenza quotidiana.

Anche questa particolare poetica, nel segno della semplificazione della forme, fa parte della tradizione della modernità, senza, con questo atteggiamento, ridurre l’autonomia dell’artista e, nel nostro caso, del designer.

I mobili in senso pieno dei nove artisti non sono “sculture sulle quali ci si possa anche sedere o appoggiare. Non multipli d’arte, ma forme studiate appositamente per una funzione; oggetti che vivono grazie alle tecniche di produzione industriale”.*13* C onclusioni provvisorie Gli anni ’90 hanno già mostrato, in questo primo assaggio, una tendenza al ritorno della ragione progettuale,

more agreeable than in the other apartments in which we had lived”.<12>

A gen ore F abbri, C arlo Mo Agenore Fabbri and Carlo Mo, respectively with the bench “Nastro di Gala” and the seat “Chip”, present two different solutions serving the same functional purpose: sitting down.

The formal simplicity o f the structure facilitates both comprehension o f the languages o f the objects and their collocation in already designed spaces; what I mean is that they are design-objects that do not seem to have a previous history. Expressions o f a sort o f “basic design” o f the primary function o f repose, gradually developing in the course of different experiences, different contexts o f use, it is as if these two objects belonged more to natural man than to his cultural and historical capacities o f transformation. The symbolic polyvalence is entrusted en tirely to the users o f these two different seats; both Fabbri and Mo have confined themselves to solving, in the most simple and ecological manner possible, one o f the fundamental problems one o f our everyday existence.

This particular poetic, bent on the simplification o f form, likewise forms part of the tradition o f modernity, without, by reason o f this attitude, restricting the autonomy of the artist or, in our case, o f the designer. The articles o f furniture, in the fu ll sense, designed by the nine artists are not “sculptures on which one can also sit or lean. They are not art multiples, but forms specially designed for a function; objects brought into being by means o f the techniques of industrial production”'JI3>

P ro visio n a l conclusions The 1990s have already revealed, in these first manifestations, a tendency to return to a rationality of industrial design as fa r as languages and contexts o f use are concerned, without overlooking the interconnections and relationships necessary to understand the complexity o f our historical horizons.

Industrial design and the firms that operate in the sector o f the production o f objects o f use and consumption must take into account the fundamental programmatic requirements of civilized society; “the activity o f the designer has served and still serves to create the medial language necessary for the dialogue between production and users, indispensable to the market economy to reduce the costs o f interpersonal information”,,4>.

The “Collezione ABV” looks forward to the next decade with a selection o f some o f the most stimulating artistic researches o f the years immediately behind us, without, however, forgetting that industrial design and planning activity in general must

nel rispetto dei linguaggi e dei diversi contesti d’uso, senza ovviamente dimenticare gli intrecci e le relazioni necessarie per comprendere la complessità dei nostri orizzonti storici.

Il design, e le aziende che lavorano nel settore della produzione di oggetti d’uso e di consumo, dovranno prendere in considerazione le fondamentali necessità programmatiche che stanno a fondamento della convivenza civile: “l’attività del designer è servita e serve tuttora alla creazione del linguaggio mediale, necessario al dialogo tra produzione e utilizzatori, indispensabile all’economia di mercato per ridurre i costi delle informazioni interpersonali”(14) La collezione ABY guarda al prossimo decennio, recuperando alcune delle ricerche artistiche più stimolanti degli anni che stanno alle nostre spalle, senza però dimenticare che il design e in genere l’attività progettuale, devono sempre coniugarsi con la dimensione industriale.

Proprio per questa ragione non è per nulla nostalgica la collezione ABV. Essa cerca l’identità degli oggetti futuri, non solo nello sviluppo tecnologico e produttivo, ma soprattutto in un rapporto di collaborazione con i linguaggi che esprimono, essenzialmente, una funzione estetica.

L’estetica delle merci appartiene, a tutti gli effetti, alla modernità; fondamentale è non confondere i linguaggi e le discipline, in modo tale che ciascuno degli interpreti, sappia riconoscere arte da oggetto d’uso e, contemporaneamente, sia in grado di individuare la qualità estetica dei prodotti, anche nel momento in cui si siede su una panchina anonima di un parco.

always adapt themselves to the industrial dimension. For this reason the 66Collezione ABV ” is not at all nostalgic. It seeks the identity o f the objects o f the future not only in technological and productive development but, above all, in a relationship of collaboration with the languages that express, essentially, an aesthetic function.

The aesthetics o f commodities belong in every respect to modernity; o f fundamental importance is the need to avoid a confusion o f languages and disciplines, so that each o f the interpreters, o f the users, is able to distinguish art from useful object and, at the same time, to recognize the aesthetic quality o f a product even when he is sitting on an anonymous bench in a park.

Q. Did our invitation to design an article of furniture take you by surprise or is it something you have long been wanting to do?

R. Devo dire che mi sarebbe piaciuto riceverlo 20/30 anni fa, quando il mondo era a livello del mio pensiero. Oggi ho trovato una tecnologia estremamente sofisticata, che ormai si avvale dell’ausilio di computers e di ergonomie complesse, di tutto un mondo che mi vede un attimo assente, perché non l'ho seguito da vicino. La proposta mi ha quindi un po’ sgomentato, ma quando Fausta Squatriti, vedendo un mio disegno per un’opera che aveva una funzionalità prettamente estetica, disse: “potrebbe essere interessante ricavare da questo un elemento che, oltre a collocarsi a parete, diventa anche tavolo”, ho tirato un sospiro di sollievo.

A. I must say that I should like to have received it 20/30 years ago, when the world was at the same level as my thought. Today I find the extremely sophisticated technology, making use of computers and complex ergonomics, of a whole world that I am a bit out of, because I haven’t followed it closely.

So the invitation disconcerted me a little, but when Fausta Squatriti, seeing a drawing of mine for a work of strictly aesthetic functionality, said: “it could be interesting to make of that an element that goes on the wall, certainly, but which also becomes a table”, I heaved a sigh of relief.

D. Qual’è il rapporto fra il tuo lavoro primario di arte pura e la forma da dare alle tue idee, trasposte in un ambito diverso? Non è la prima volta che disegni un oggetto di utilità. Questi mobili che ci circondano sono disegnati da te.

Q. What is the relationship between your primary work of pure art and the form to give to your ideas when transposed to a different sphere? This is not the first time you design a useful object: you designed all the furniture we see round us.

R. Sì, appunto, ma vedi, penso che l'arte debba incidere sulla evoluzione del fare.

Comunque credo che nel progettare oggetti funzionali vi sia la stessa spiritualità che nel fare arte puramente visiva. Per me, il progettare avviene sempre come interrelazione con qualche materiale primario, semplice, elementare, al quale io posso dare qualcosa che lui non ha mai avuto; si viene a creare così quella terza cosa che è l’interazione che si stabilisce tra me e lui.

A. Yes, exactly. You see, I think that art should influence the evolution of making things. In any case, I think that in designing functional things there is the same spirituality as in producing purely visual art. For me, designing is always an interrelationship with some elementary, simple, primary material to which I can give something it has never had: there comes into being a third thing, which is the interaction that occurs between me and it.

D. Il rapporto che esiste fra la creatività e

la materia è una problematica modernissima, ma anche antica.

Q. The relationship that exists between creativity and material is a very modern topic, but also ancient.

R. Sì, bisogna conoscere la materia, scoprirla, sentirsi in essa. Oggi però penso che la funzione dell’artefice, di colui che fa, sia una funzione più critica rispetto alla sola funzione della manualità, della fattività. Il ruolo che in questo momento può avere un artista ideativo, più che quello di produrre nuove cose, è quello di guardarle e di suggerire nuove idee, che possono anche essere lontanissime da quelle già concretizzate.

Penso sempre al fatto della luce: tutto il mondo sta producendo lampade, o meglio paralumi aberranti, e invece l’inquietudine di un’artista potrebbe essere quella di dire: “vediamo se è possibile sollecitare le molecole dello spazio perché si illuminino o si possono spegnere per la loro autoenergia”. Penso che l’artista debba avere delie intuizioni, che poi, magari,

A. Yes, one must know the material, discover it, identify oneself with it. But I think that today the function of the artificer, the man who makes things, goes beyond the mere manual function, the actual making. The role that an inventive artist could have at this moment consists not so much in producing new things as in looking at them and suggesting new ideas, which may be very distant from those already realized. / always think about the fact of light, the whole world is producing lamps or, rather, aberrant lamp-shades, whereas the restlessness of the artist may lead him to say: “let us create, let us see if it is possible to influence the molecules in space in such a way that they light up and extinguish themselves by means of their own energy". I think that the artist must have

verranno realizzate fra mille anni. Perché l’artista ha sempre il compito di progettare, proiettare. Pensiamo a Max Bill: oggi il mondo dice che è fuori tempo.

Per me è in realtà mille anni avanti rispetto alla storia; è la storia che è andata irrimediabilmente indietro. Quindi io penso che la progettazione adesso può essere solo di idee; domani, forse, entrando in problemi più profondi, diverrà anche di cose. Le idee veramente necessarie a un artista sono solo quelle che si possono verificare oggettivamente, perché altrimenti tutti hanno idee. Difatti la crisi contemporanea ha origine dal fatto che tutti enunciano le proprie idee e queste, per eccesso di soggettivismo, vengono incondizionatamente apprezzate, mentre solo la verificabilità di un’idea dimostra il suo valore.

D. Come ti rapporti con lo spazio abitativo e con l'ambiente che ti circonda?

R. È abbastanza disagevole vivere

intuitions which perhaps will be realized only a thousand years later; because the artist's role is always to design, to project.

Think of Max Bill: now the world says he is out of date; as far as I am concerned, he is out of date because he is a thousand years ahead of history; it is history that has gone irremediably backwards. So I think that today designing can only be a matter of ideas; tomorrow perhaps, entering into deeper problems, it will become also a matter of things. The ideas really necessary to an artist are only those that can be objectively verified, because otherwise everyone has ideas. In fact the present crisis derives from the fact that everyone enunciates his ideas, and these, owing to an excess of subjectivism, are unconditionally appreciated, whereas only the verifiability of an idea demonstrates its value.

Q. How do you relate to your living space and environment?

soffocati come siamo da un contorno inutile e anche dannoso. La proliferazione incontrollata prodotta dal consumismo sfrenato ha provocato, oltre a tutto il resto, anche una “pollution” ottica che credo ormai possano avvertire tutti, e non solo chi fa della visione il fulcro del proprio operare. Lo spazio è congestionato. È chiaro che oggi si produce più immondizia che sostanza: vedo le strade riempirsi di spazzatura, ma non i cervelli di intelligenza. Nelle grandi aree di progetto, come possono essere, ad esempio, quelle dei trasporti o delle residenze, la ricerca si dedica solo a risolvere falsi problemi. Penso da decenni allo spazio pneumatico, uno spazio dalla vibratilità inarrestabile, quantificato e dinamico in rapporto alle fondamentali esigenze umane, visto che le varie occupazioni richiedono diversi volumi d'aria e diverse condizioni. Questo tipo di spazio potrebbe essere una salvezza per l’uomo. È assurdo vedere edifici o mezzi di trasporto che occupano lo stesso volume sia quando sono pieni che quando sono vuoti. In realtà dovrebbero dilatarsi e restringersi. Credo che il principio della logica e della massima economia per il miglior risultato sia ancora quello a cui tutto il mondo della ricerca dovrebbe mirare, ed è quello che io cerco infatti di fare esemplificativamente con l’arte; invece sembra che ormai tutto il mondo punti a ottenere il peggior risultato con il massimo dello spreco.

A. It is fairly uncomfortable to be suffocated as we are by a useless and even harmful environment. The uncontrolled proliferation produced by unbridled consumerism has given rise, apart from everything else, to an optical pollution which I think can now be perceived by all, and not only by those whose vision is the fulcrum of their work.

Space is congested. It is clear that today more refuse is produced than substance.

I see streets fill up with rubbish, not brains with intelligence. In the great project areas, for example transport or housing, research is dedicated to the solution of false problems. I have thought for decades about pneumatic space, a space of unceasing vibratiiity, quantified and dynamic in accordance with the fundamental human needs, given that the various occupations call for different volumes of air and different conditions.

This type of space could be man’s salvation. It is absurd to see buildings or means of transport which occupy the same volume whether they are full or empty; they should shrink and expand.

I believe that the principle of logic and of achieving the best result with the greatest economy should still be the aim of the entire world of research, and it is what I try to do in an exemplary manner in my art. But it seems instead that what the whole world is aiming at is the worst result with the greatest possible waste.

D. Tornando al mobile che stai realizzando per la Tecno, all’aspetto tecnologico della costruzione, ad esempio

Q. Returning to the article of furniture you are designing for Tecno, do you consider the technical aspect of the construction,

alle cerniere, al modo di tenerlo in piedi.

Consideri questi elementi come parte integrante della tua progettazione oppure un supporto utile e necessario per presentare una idea di ordine estetico?

R. lo penso che questi elementi siano

fondamentali per la struttura dell’oggetto, proprio perché ogni oggetto di design deve essere prima di tutto struttura. Il suo valore dipende solo da questo. Come approccio iniziale sapevo di questa difficoltà, e ora mi darò da fare per cercare di risolverla con qualche idea, spremendomi il cervello, in maniera che questo diventi veramente un fatto determinante e il più importante di tutti.

Speravo risultasse un oggetto a parete che si può usare anche per altro, con delle soluzioni di intercambiabilità. Mi interessa che, non so, diventi più piccolo, che abbia la possibilità di mettere le persone in maniera differente, in un lato una, in uno due, in un altro tre, che è un’idea di gioco di numeri. Adesso cercherò (nel momento in cui stiamo facendo l’intervista il tavolo non è ancora finito), che le soluzioni tecniche siano superiori a questi numeretti. Questo è quello che vorrei.

D. Pensi che in genere si possa

influenzare il modo di vivere e di abitare attraverso gli oggetti che noi proponiamo?

Ti sembra che l’uomo voglia vivere sempre in una certa maniera e che gli oggetti si devono adattare alle sue necessità?

R. No, questo sarebbe importante, ma per

me è ancora da venire. Il problema mio attuale è di cercare, e mi sembra di aver visto fra i tecnici della Tecno qualcuno che può darmi delle informazioni, quelle micro-scintille che permettono al motore di avviarsi, qualcuno che mi metta delle inquietudini e anche mi dia degli orientamenti perché io possa fare qualcosa per la costruzione di questo mobile. Ad esempio ricordo il mio studio negli anni '60: era ordinato, ordinatissimo, perfetto. Quando arrivava qualcuno, apriva la porta e pensava di avere sbagliato, di essere entrato nello studio di un medico. Ecco, quello era un passo in avanti, abbastanza forte. Mi piacerebbe che anche questo mobile creasse un piccolo scatto nella mente di chi vi si trova davanti, e io faccia diventare un fatto diverso, non certo per distruggere un precedente, ma per concentrarsi su un minimo problema che porta una persona a chiedersi con più attenzione: “ma come mai è stato realizzato questo?” e che questo tavolo dia una risposta verificabile.

for example the hinges, the way it is held up, as an integrant part of your design or just as a useful and necessary support for the presentation of an aesthetic idea?

A. I think that these elements are fundamental to the structure of the object, because every designed object must be first and foremost structure. Its value depends on this alone. In my initial approach I was aware of this difficulty, and now I shall set myself to solving it by means of some idea, by racking my brain, in such a way that this becomes really a determinant fact, the most important of all.

I hoped that it would be an object for the wall, also usable otherwise, with possibilities of interchangeability. I should like it to become smaller, to provide the possibility of different arrangements of people, one on one side, two on another, three on a third, which is an idea of the play of numbers. Now I shall try to see to it (at the time of the interview the object was still being designed) that the technical solutions go beyond these merely numerical aspects. That is what I want.

Q. Do you think it is possible to influence the way people live by means of the objects we propose, or does it seem to you that man always wants to live in a certain way and that objects must adapt themselves to his needs?

A. No, that would be important, but I think it still lies in the future. My problem at this moment is to search for, and it seems to me that among the Tecno technicians I have found, someone who will provide me with information, those micro-sparks that get the engine started; someone who gives me problems but also orientations, so that I can do something for the construction of this article. For example, I remember my studio in the 1960s; it was tidy, immaculately tidy, perfect, and when someone arrived, opened the door, he thought he had come by mistake to a physician’s consulting room. There, that was a step fonvard, quite a big step.

I should like this table to give a little impulse to the mind of a person seeing it and to make it different, not in the sense of destroying a precedent but in focalizing it on a minimal problem that leads a person to ask himself more attentively: “but why has this been made?” And I should like the table to give a verifiable answer. That is what I am interested in.

Q. It could be said that the furniture you designed 25/30 years ago represented the extreme radicalization of your thought.

Questo è ciò che mi interessa.

D. Si può dire che i mobili che hai disegnato 25/30 anni fa erano la radicalizzazione estrema del tuo pensiero.

Forse oggi puoi affrontare la progettazione di un mobile in maniera più consona alle sue funzioni; essendoti pacificato con la tua rivoluzione personale, forse oggi puoi fare qualcosa che possa coniugare il tuo pensiero a quello collettivo.

R. Spero di essere chiaro in quello che dirò. Ho un certo rimpianto di aver sprecato tanti anni della mia vita per interessarmi a cose un po' lontane dal mondo vero della progettazione, che è stato il mondo che mi ha un po’ formato.

Ho lavorato in industrie abbastanza grandi, quando ero molto giovane. Poi ho perso i contatti con questo mondo, ho pensato all’arte, come qualche cosa da lasciare alla storia: il famoso museo che ho fatto in Sud America, cose di questo tipo. Oggi ho un grande rimpianto, perché penso che se avessi continuato dopo queste cose apparentemente arcaiche, sarei arrivato, penso, a fare delle cose forse importanti. Mi sarei dovuto applicare probabilmente con più continuità a quel mondo degli oggetti che danno sempre una risposta; non sono come il mondo degli uomini, che sono fatti innanzitutto di viscere. Sì, certe volte mi accade di pensare: ‘‘che peccato!” L'altro giorno visitando appunto la Tecno, ho detto: “che peccato che non ho vissuto più intensamente dentro a questo mondo!”

D. Che rapporto c’è fra la tua vocazione di progettista e la tua spinta primaria ad essere artista, anche se so che questa è una parola che a te non piace?

R. Ma sai, è talmente forte questa cosa che ti ho detto prima e questa lacuna...

Si tratta della mancanza di relazione che ho avuto per tanti anni con il mondo del fare complesso, non è buttar giù così una lampada che sembri una farfalla, oppure un'altra che sembri, non so, ...una trombetta. Fare vuol dire fare delle cose difficili, fare una cosa che viva per la prima volta. E per questo occorre essere abbastanza integri e avere tante e tante energie. È una cosa da record.

D. C’è qualche altra cosa che vuoi dire?

R. No.

Perhaps now you can undertake to design a piece of furniture in a manner more consonant with its functions; having got over your personal revolution, you can now make something that joins your thought to the collective thought.

A. I hope I am clear in what I am about to say. I must say that I feel a certain regret at having wasted so many years of my life by being interested in things a little removed from the real world of design, in which, to a certain extent, I received my training. I worked for fairly large industrial concerns, when I was very young. Then I lost contact with that world. I thought about art as something to leave to history: the famous museum I organized in South America, things like that. Today I feel a great regret, because I think that if I had continued, after these apparently archaic things, I should have come, I think, to do things which perhaps were important.

I should probably have applied myself with more continuity to the world of objects that always give a response; unlike the world of men, who consist primarily of entrails. Yes, at times I find myself thinking: “What a pity!" The other day, on a visit to Tecno, I said: “what a pity that I didn’t live more intensely in this world!”

Q. What is the relationship between your vocation for designing and your primary impulse to be an artist, even though I know this is a word you do not like?

A. You know, it is so strong, this thing I told you about and this void. What it is, is the absence of a relationship I had for so many years with the complex world of making things; it is not simply a matter of dashing off a lamp that looks like a butterfly, or another that looks like...

I don't know... a trumpet. Making things means doing things that are difficult, to make a thing that lives for the first time.

And that calls for a fair amount of integrity and lots and lots of energy. It’s like breaking records.

Q. Is there anything else you wish to say?

A. No.

GETULIO ALVIANI Nasce a Udine nel 1939. È un protagonista della ricerca cinetica e dell'Arte Programmata.

La sua ricerca più nota, le “Superfici a testura vibratile”, esposte per la prima volta nel 1961 alla Mala Galerja di Ljubljana, si avvale dell'acciaio e dell'alluminio. Ha successivamente continuato la sua ricerca per l’ottenimento di nuove tecniche sui diversi materiali.

“Progettista” per eccellenza, Alviani si è occupato anche di disegno industriale, e nel 1963 ha creato una serie di tessuti stampati con criterio cinetico visuale per Germana Marucelli e per Rudy Gernreich che diede Inizio in tutto il mondo alla moda “Op”.

Ha partecipato alle più importanti esposizioni internazionali riguardanti le ricerche Optical, Cinetiche e Sistematiche. Ha fatto parte del movimento internazionale “Nouvelle Tendence Recherches Continuelles”.

Nel 1963 è presente nella mostra “Mouvement” alla Galleria Denise René di Parigi e nel 1965 all’esposizione “The Responsive Eye” al Museum of Modern Art di New York. Nel 1983 è presente nella mostra “Arte programmata e cinetica, 1953-1963” a Palazzo Reale di Milano, nel 1986 in “Arte e Scienza” sezione colore, alla Biennale di Venezia.

Anche il colore ha costituito un elemento fondamentale della sua ricerca. Dal 1976 al 1981 ha insegnato pittura all’Accademia di Carrara. Nel 1981 è stato chiamato a dirigere il Museo di Arte Moderna a Ciudad Bolivar in Venezuela, da lui Interamente dedicato all’arte costruttiva.

Vive e lavora a Milano.

Getulio Alviani was bom at Udine in 1939.

He is a leading figure in kinetic research and Programmed Art. His best known research, the “superfici a testura vibratiie”, first exhibited at the Mala Galerija, Ljubljana, makes use of steel and aluminium. He has subsequently proceeded with his research to develop new techniques for the different materials. A “designer" par excellence, Alviani has also concerned himself with industrial design, and in 1963 he created a series of fabrics printed according to a visual kinetic criterion for Germana Marucelli and for Rudy Gernreich that launched the worldwide “Op" fashion.

He has taken part in the most important international exhibitions concerned with Optical, Kinetic and Systematic researches and in the international “Nouvelle Tendence Recherches Continuelles” movement.

In 1963 he took part in the “Mouvement" exhibition at the Galleria Denise René in Paris and, in 1965, in “The Responsive Eye” exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the “Programmed and kinetic art, 1953-1963” exhibition at the Palazzo Reale, Milan, in 1983; the colour section of the “Art and Science” exhibition of the Venice Biennale in 1986.

Colour, too, has been a fundamental element in his research. From 1976 to 1981 he taught painting at the Academy of Carrara. In 1981 he was called to direct the Museum of Modern Art of Ciudad Bolivar in Venezuela, which he dedicated entirely to Constructivist art.

He lives and works in Milan.

D. Che rapporto c’è fra il tuo lavoro di scultore e questo progetto, che è Invece tipicamente da designer.

R. Per me la scultura era stata un mezzo: non mi sono mai considerato come uno scultore, ma uno che ha adoperato la scultura per urlare contro la guerra, quella che si fà giornalmente. Ad un certo punto sono arrivato alla resa del conti; che cosa faccio ora, a 70 anni? Mi sono guardato in giro e ho detto: ma questo Ragazzo della guerra non esiste più, quel cane non esiste più, però esiste ancora la guerra.

Era un mondo nel quale avevo vissuto, ma ora volevo entrare in una situazione diversa, volevo gioire. Avevo dei ritagli di lamiera che avevo preso in Tecno, perché come sai, io feci molte cose nell’officina della Tecno. Se la volete chiamare un'operazione di design, potete chiamarla così. Per me era un gioco.

D. Progettando questa panchina hai dimostrato, ancora una volta, il tuo anticonformismo, la tua libertà di pensiero.

R. Non ammetto che un artista per tutta

una vita, faccia sempre la stessa cosa, lo sono un artista impersonale. Se vado in studio domani, e mi punge l’idea di fare un bellissimo nudo, lo faccio, e così per una damina del 700. Questa panchina riguarda proprio questo discorso.

D. Che rapporto hai con la forma del tuo

lavoro, trasposta in un ambito diverso?

In questo caso non cè attinenza stilistica con il tuo lavoro di scultore.

R. Quando ho iniziato, volli copiare il “Dejuner sur l’erbe” di Manet. Ho distrutto le figure, poi, non sapendo fare il paesaggio, l’ho fatto con dei segni, che sono i miei.Tutta la mia pittura è gestuale; quando ho preso la lamiera e l’ho piegata, ho compiuto un gesto, allo stesso modo di quando dipingo o scolpisco.

D. Ti sei comportato come un designer assolutamente canonico.

Q. What relationship is there between your work as a sculptor and this particular project, which is very much a designer’s project?

A. For me sculpture has been a means: I have never considered myself a sculptor, but someone who used sculpture to protest against every type of violence, against war, the one which is waged every day. At a certain point I had to decide; what shall I do now, at 70?

I looked round and I said: but this Boy of the war no longer exists, that dog no longer exists, but the war still exists.

It was a world in which I had lived, but now I wanted to enter into a different situation, I wanted to rejoice. I had some off-cuts of sheet metal that I had got from Tecno, because, as you know, I did a lot of things in the Tecno workshop. If you want to call it an operation of design, call it that. For me it was a game.

Q. In designing this bench you have once again given a demonstration of your anti­ conformism, your freedom of thought.

A. I don’t accept the idea of an artist for a life time doing always the same thing. I am an impersonal artist. If I go into my studio tomorrow and like the idea of making a beautiful nude, I do so, or a lady of the 18th century. The bench was the same thing.

Q. What relationship do you have with the form of your work transposed to a different sphere? In your case there is no stylistic connection with your work as a sculptor.

A. When I started off, I wanted to copy Manet's “Déjeuner sur l ’herbe”. I then destroyed the figures and. not knowing how to do the landscape, I did it with signs, my signs. All my painting is gesture; when I took the sheet metal and bent it, I carried out a gesture, in the same way as when I paint or sculpt.

Q. So you behaved in the classic way of the designer.

R. Tanto è vero che, con quella stessa panchina si potrebbe fare un monumento, mettendo un elemento sopra all’altro; continuando fino all’infinito, diventa un modulo.

A. So much so that with that same bench one could make a monument, putting one element on top of the other to infinity.

It becomes a module.

R. Non si inventa niente, si modifica. Vi dirò che anche la scultura è nata perché le pietre erano disponibili. Nell’epoca Assiro-Babilonese, la scultura era il segno del potere, Il signore era mandante del soggetto e comandava lo stile. Pensate a come è nata la coppa, è stata presa della terra, pressata sul seno di una donna, tanto è vero che ci vedi l’impronta della mano.

A. One doesn’t invent anything, one modifies. I’ll also say that sculpture came into being because stones were available.

In the Asyrian-Babylonian epoch, sculpture was the sign of power, the ruler decreed the subject and the style. Think how the first cup was made, earth was taken and pressed on the breast of a woman, so much so that one sees the print of the hand.

D. Il prim o pezzo di design.

Q. The first designed object.

R. Di scultura, anzi la prima tazza, quindi design e scultura si fondono. Per esempio, le navi spaziali sono sculture in movimento. L'uomo ha sempre pensato al movimento, e gli artisti l’hanno captato, basta pensare al Futurismo.

A. The first sculpture or, rather, the first cup, thus design and sculpture together.

For example, the space ships are sculpture in movement. Man has always thought of movement and the artists exploited it: just think of Futurism.

D. Ai Futuristi interessava fissare

Q. The Futurists were interested in fixing the appearance of a gesture in movement, like a photogram, but one has to wait for Moholy-Nagy and, later, Kinetic art, to find a real relationship with scientific observation.

l’apparenza di un gesto in movimento, come in un fotogramma, ma bisogna arrivare a Moholy - Nagy, e più tardi all’arte cinetica, per avere un vero rapporto con l’osservazione scientifica.

R. Ma al rapporto tra scienza e arte, prima dei Futuristi aveva pensato Leonardo da Vinci. Lui impazzì per far volare un uomo, ciò che non poteva fare, ma ha avuto una intuizione straordinaria.

D. Il desiderio è sempre all’avanguardia.

R. La scienza fino a quell’epoca era

avanguardie dal punto di vista visivo è stata enorme, e ci sono voluti 50 anni per renderla accettata. Tutta la “pulizia” fatta, è stata contestata violentemente dal Post-moderno. A noi sempre una marcia indietro verso temi visivi che parevano cancellati per sempre, come la decorazione in eccesso, fine a sé stessa.

In cosa secondo te, questo fenomeno corrisponde alla necessità dell’uomo di oggi?

R. Se tu riesci a fare un oggetto che è

funzionale e in più ha questo senso, ritornando alla panchina, di felicità e di gioco, allora il gioco è fatto, ed inoltre corrisponde all’epoca in cui viviamo.

D. A noi pare che un oggetto di design

today, through intuition, it becomes also art. Once man had taken the horse and put it aside, a new epoch began.

Q. The great revolution carried out by the avant-gardes was enormous from a visual point of view, and it has taken 50 years to get it accepted. All this “cleaning up" has been violently contested by the PostModern movement. To us it seems a step backwards towards visual themes that seemed to have been eliminated for ever, like an excess of decoration for its own sake. In what way do you think this phenomenon corresponds to the needs of modem man?

A. If you manage to make an object which is functional and, in addition, gives this sense, to return to the bench, of happiness and play, then that's it, and, furthermore, it corresponds to the age in which we live.

R. Quel tavolo che ha fatto Foster è bellissimo e funzionale, per ottenerlo c’è un lavoro di ricerca, ma si finisce con il fare troppo, per reggere quel piano. Due cavalletti e un piano, per un tavolo, possono bastare, ma in un oggetto si manifesta anche un pensiero, sia logico

A. That table designed by Foster is beautiful and functional, to make It calls for a work of research; but one ends up by doing too much, to support that plane.

Two trestles and a plane, to make a table, could be enough, but an object is the expression also of a thought, whether

D. Ci sono molti artisti che hanno bisogno

Q. Many artists need to live in a setting that corresponds completely to their personality, while others live in absolutely casual spaces. To which of these categories do you belong?

di vivere in un ambiente che corrisponda alla loro personalità, ve ne sono altri che vivono in spazi assolutamente casuali. A quale di queste categorie appartieni?

R. In casa ho dei quadri di Fontana, ma non oggetti miei. Vivendo tutto il giorno nello studio, voglio un taglio netto. La mia casa è delle più semplici, letto, tavolo, tutto della Tecno. lo amo molto lo spazio, ma nonostante abbia uno studio molto grande, lavoro in uno spazio limitato, due metri per due. Lo spazio mi piace averlo, ma se non avessi niente, non ne avrei bisogno.

D. Raccontaci come hai incominciato a

lavorare con l’architetto Osvaldo Borsani.

R. Nel 1947, vennero ad Albisola Osvaldo

e il papà. Naturalmente Lucio Fontana mi presentò, e tornando a Milano cominciammo a frequentare la Borsani: loro facevano degli arredamenti per i ricchi di Milano, ed allora, per completarli, si Interveniva, Fontana ed lo.

Noi eravamo dei collaboratori, decoratori.

Fio fatto tutto quello che c ’era da fare: pannelli in ceramica, vasi da fiori, caminetti. Facevamo queste cose per vivere.

D. E lavorare alla Tecno di oggi com’è?

R. Per me va benissimo, ma non mi ci

trovo più. Fio vissuto la Tecno nel momento in cui è nata; allora, era legata ancora ad un discorso artigianale.

D. Vuoi dirci qualche altra cosa a

proposito di questo nostro progetto nato dall’idea di lavorare ancora con gli artisti?

R. Questo fatto oggi, direi che è molto più

importante di allora, perché allora si trattava più che altro di inserti decorativi.

Avete fatto benissimo a fare questa cosa, penso che potrà avere il suo avvenire. MI piace la scrivania di Veronesi ed anche quel tavolo sbilenco è bello. Anche se non andassero in produzione, ha una grossa importanza averli fatti.

D. Come espressione di un pensiero

“poetico” in un'industria moderna?

R. Sì, e se domani la Tecno pubblicherà

tutta la sua produzione, i prodotti classici ed anche tutti gli oggetti che magari non sono solo funzionali, ma che stimolano delle sensazioni, delle emozioni, sarà importante seguire questo discorso.

A. At home I have paintings by Fontana but none of my objects. Living all day in the studio, I want something completely different. My home is very simple, bed, table, all made by Tecno. I love space but, even though my studio is very large, I work in a small space, two meters by two. I like to have space, but if I had none, I could do without.

Q. Tell us how you started to work with the architect Osvaldo Borsani.

A. In 1947 Osvaldo came to Albisola with his father. Naturally Lucio Fontana introduced me. On returning to Milan, we began to frequent the Borsani establishment. They made the furnishings for the rich of Milan, and then, to complete them, Fontana and I did our bit. We were collaborators, decorators. I did whatever was needed: ceramic panels, flower vases, fire-places. We did these things to live.

Q. What is it like working for the Tecno of today?

A. Fine, as far as I am concerned, only I no longer feel at home there. I knew Tecno when it was founded, then it was still tied to a craftsman's way of thinking.

Q. Do you have anything else to say of our project based on the idea of once again working with artists?

A. What is done today, I should say is much more important than then, because then it was mostly a matter of decorative insertions. You Ve done very well to do this thing; I think it could have a future.

I like Veronesi's desk, and that crooked table, that's also nice. Even if they don’t go into production, it is very important to have made them.

Q. As expression of a ‘poetic” thought in a modern industry?

A. Yes, and perhaps in the future Tecno will publish all its production, the classic products and also all the objects which perhaps are not only functional but also stimulate sensations, emotions. It is important to follow that path.

AGENORE FABBRI Nasce a Barba, in Toscana, nel 1911.

La sua formazione culturale si svolge nel clima degli anni Trenta a Firenze, dove incontra Montale e Rosai. Il 1932 è l’anno della “scoperta” di Albisola, centro ligure per la lavorazione della ceramica: conosce Martini e si lega di amicizia con Fontana. Alla Liguria resterà vicino per molti anni, prendendo anche parte attiva alla Resistenza.

Nel dopoguerra si manifesta una appassionata linea di ricerca espressionista, figurativa e informale, documentata dall'importante personale alla Galleria Cairola di Milano.

Gli anni Cinquanta sono contrassegnati da rilevanti riconoscimenti artistici: una sala alla XXVI Biennale di Venezia, la Quadriennale Romana e la Triennale di Milano. In tempi recenti si segnalano la mostra antologica al Lehmbruck Museum di Dulsburg, l’esposizione delle ultime opere Informali allo Studio Marconi di Milano, successive alle mostre di Palazzo Giano della Bella a Pistola e alla Sala delle Cariatidi al Palazzo Reale di Milano. Sue opere sono conservate In vari musei della Germania, del Giappone, di San Paolo in Brasile.

Per la Collezione ABV Agenore Fabbri ha progettato la panchina “Nastro di gala”.

Agenore Fabbri was born at Barba, in Tuscany, in 1911.

His cultural formation took place in the atmosphere of the 1930s in Florence, where he met Montale and Rosai. 1932 was the year of the “discovery" of Albisola, the Ligurian pottery centre: he met Martini and became friends with Fontana. His close association with the Liguria continued for many years and he also played an active part in the Resistance.

The post-war period gave rise to a passionate line of expressionist, figurative and informal research and a large exhibition at the Galleria Cairola in Milan.

The 1950s were marked by notable tributes to his work: a room at the XXVI Venice Biennale, the Rome Quadriennaie, the Milan Triennale.

Mention should also be made of the more recent anthological exhibition at the Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg and the exhibition of the latest informal works at the Studio Marconi in Milan, which followed the exhibition at the Palazzo Giano della Bella in Pistoia and in the Sala delle Cariatidi of the Palazzo Reale in Milan. His works are in the collections of various museums in Germany, Japan and San Paulo in Brazil.

He lives and works in Milan.

D. Come ti è venuto in mente di disegnare questo sedile?

Q. What made you think of designing this seat?

R. Avendo vissuto a lungo in Africa, mi sono accorto che, al di fuori delle tende, dove la branda andava bene, ed entrando in una specie di quadrilatero di muri, fatti male, ma sempre muri con finestre e porte, la branda non era più valida. Allora ho incominciato a costruirmi il letto, poi ho fatto la sedia, ho fatto il tavolo. Penso che l’origine sia questa. Nel 1953 ritornando dall’Africa, dove avevo perso molto di civiltà, ero sempre tanto solo, e poiché sculture non ne vendevo, ogni tanto dovevo interrompere. Ho cosi provato a fare un mobile, e ho vinto un premio Domus, allora, nel 54; era un tavolino tutto smontabile, avvolgibile, non ricordo nemmeno dove sia andato a finire. In seguito, anche perché ho avuto quattro figli e mi sembrava giusto fare qualcosa che sollecitasse la loro fantasia, ho inventato una sedia per la Paola, un'altra per la Francesca, il tavolino, la piccola libreria, l’oggettino.

A. Having lived for a long time in Africa, I realized that, not in tents, where a campbed was fine, but in a sort of quadrilateral of walls, badly made but still walls, with windows and doors, a camp-bed was no longer suitable. So I started to make myself a bed, then I made a chair and a table. I think that was the origin. In 1953 I returned from Africa, where I had lost a lot of my civilization; I was always very much alone; and since I wasn’t selling sculptures, every so often one needed a break. So I tried making a piece of furniture and won a Domus prize, that was in 1954; it was a small table that could be completely dismantled and rolled up, I don’t remember now where it got to.

Subsequently, because I had four children and it seemed to be a good thing to do something to stimulate their imaginations, I invented a chair for Paola, something else for Francesca, a small table, a small book-case, small objects.

D. Che rapporto hai con la forma del tuo

Q. What relationship do you have with the form of your work transposed to a different sphere? Is there an analogy of method between your work as a sculptor and your work as a designer of furniture ?

R. lo vivo a Pavia, una città strana, dove ogni angolo, ogni pezzettino è scultura, quindi non so se proprio io veda una grande differenza tra un bell’oggetto di design, ed una scultura. Per me ogni prodotto dell’intelligenza umana e di questa cosa meravigliosa che sono le mani dell’uomo, è qualcosa che mi dà fortissime emozioni. No, non ci vedo differenza.

D. Un momento estetico è sempre un

progetto totale.

R. La creatività è un dono del Padre

Eterno, e se grazie a questo dono, si può essere un grande scultore o un grande designer, il successo è determinato anche dal fatto che l’uomo vi ritrova sé stesso.

D. Sì, se questo oggetto è esatto.

Ti identifichi come creatore nell’ambiente in cui vivi, oppure l’ambiente in cui lavori ti è indifferente?

R. Ho vissuto forse nei posti più belli del

mondo, senza saperlo; vi andavo per via naturale o perché il destino mi ci portava.

A. I live in Pavia, a strange town, where every corner, every piece is sculpture, so I am not sure that I myself see a great difference between a well designed object and a sculpture. For me every product of the human intelligence and of that marvellous thing which are a man’s hands is something that arouses very strong emotions in me. I don’t see a difference.

Q. An aesthetic moment is always a total project.

A. Creativity is a gift of the Eternal Father, and if, thanks to this gift, one can be a great sculptor or a great designer, what determines this success is also the fact that man can find himself in their work.

Q. Yes, if the object is exact. As a creator do you identify yourself with the environment in which you live or is the environment in which you work indifferent to you?

A. I have lived in perhaps the most beautiful places in the world, without knowing it, I went there in a natural way or because my destiny took me there.

On the other hand, spontaneously, I am someone who creates also on the corner of the kitchen table. As a small boy I drew by instinct, almost as an obligation.

È una casa che abbiamo costruito mia moglie ed io, ogni oggetto l'abbiamo scoperto insieme.

D. Quindi non è poi vero che la casa

rappresenta solo la tua personalità.

R. Dicono ci sia solo quella, lo spererei

proprio di no, ma tutti dicono così, a me dà un fastidio terribile, ma a voi lo devo dire, perché se venite...

D. Costruire un oggetto d’uso, secondo

noi, è sempre stata opera di mediazione fra funzione e forma. L’artigiano fino all’inizio del secolo, inventava e camuffava la funzione attraverso una forma che doveva aggraziarla. Con Neo-plasticismo, Costruttivismo e Bauhaus si è creata l’estetica della tecnologia, messa in evidenza. Cosa pensi sia da salvare oggi in questi due estremi atteggiamenti?

R. lo sono sempre per il “modus” di Ovidio, ogni cosa presa con equità raggiunge la perfezione. Come mai il cucchiaio dei Malgasci, la porta dei Dogon, la pentola dei Warega, sono delle sculture? La grandezza di un artista sta nel momento in cui si sa fermare.

D. Nei mobili disegnati dai protagonisti delle avanguardie storiche, e riproposti dalle industrie ancora oggi, si sono evidenziati caratteri stilisticamente molto diversi. Pensiamo ai mobili di Gropius, Le Corbusier o Mies van der Rohe, ed a quelli che rivelano un’ispirazione di diretta discendenza pittorica, come quelli di Rietveld. In questi esempi cosa ti sembra ancora valido e cosa ti sembra sia oggi da vedere come un eccesso stilistico, legato al gusto del momento?

R. La seggiolina delle facitrici di merletti di Burano, che hanno inventato la loro sedia, e lo scalmo del remo di un gondoliere, queste sono cose di una bellezza tale che la stessa sedia di Gropius mi fa ridere. Lì c’è la sintesi, c’è la forza, c’è tutto. C’è la scultura, lo ritorno ancora al fatto che non vedo differenza fra scultura e oggetto.

Q. /As regards your way of living, what about your home?

A. In my home, and everyone accuses me of this, it seems that there is only my personality. For me the home is a tent; attached to the tent I have zebra skins, negro sculptures, spears, guns; I have the souvenirs of my loves. It is a home that my wife and I have constructed together, every object there we bought together.

O. So it is not in fact true that it represents only your personality.

A. They say there is only my personality.

I hope not, but they all say so. It irritates me terribly. But I have to tell you, because if you come...

Q. The construction of a useful object has always been, in our opinion, a work of mediation between function and form.

Until the beginning o f the present century, the craftsman disguised the function by means of a form intended to hide and embellish. Neo-plasticism, Constructivism and the Bauhaus gave rise to the aesthetics of technology, rendered evident. What aspects of these two extreme attitudes do you think should be preserved?

A. I am always in favour of Ovid’s “modus”, everything taken in the right proportion attains perfection. How is it that the Malgasci spoon, the Dogon door, the Warega pot are sculptures? The greatness of an artist lies in knowing when to stop.

Q. The articles of furniture designed by leading figures of the historic avantgardes and still manufactured today reveal very different stylistic characteristics. Think of the furniture of Gropius, Le Corbusier or Mies van der Rohe, or Rietveld's, which reveals a direct pictorial inspiration. What in these examples seems to you to be still valid today and what do you think should now be considered a stylistic excess reflecting the taste of the period?

A. The chair of the Burano lace-makers, who invented it, and the rowlocks of the gondoliers, these are things of such beauty that even Gropius’s chair makes me laugh. There is synthesis, strength, everything. That is sculpture. This brings me back to the fact that I see no

D. Ritornando al nostro progetto, come vivi il rapporto tra il pensare una forma e il vederla realizzata con la tecnologia di una fabbrica moderna?

R. È una domanda difficile. Devo scendere dalla mia consuetudine di scultore, trasferirmi in un rovesciamento della questione. L’invenzione della forma in funzione della sua riproducibilità. Non credo di essere la persona più adatta a farlo, perché tutto quello che ho fatto è forma, magari brutta, ma mia e il materiale che ho adoperato è una mia scelta. Però nello stesso tempo ho bisogno della collaborazione dei tecnici visto che, se si tratta di un mobile, è oggetto destinato ad una funzione precisa. Occorre anche sapere delle misure anatomiche del corpo, di tante cose. Certo un sedile che deve viaggiare su un aereo a grandi velocità, deve essere studiato sotto molti aspetti. Ho avuto bisogno dei calcoli dei tecnici dell’aviazione, al fine di studiare una forma che resista al vento a 200 km all’ora, per la scultura che ho collocato in Madagascar. Ho ridotto la mia scultura, dentro a quella forma.

D. Pensi che attraverso la produzione

industriale si possa promuovere un certo modo di vivere e di abitare oppure che certe situazioni siano insite nelle necessità dell’uomo e quindi che il compito della produzione industriale oggi sia quello di assecondarle?

R. Dipende dalla follia deH’uomo; presto

A. All form that in an unconscious manner creates forms that are great sculptures.

Q. However, when the need for industrial production intervenes, the terms change, because you can’t make thousands of copies of the lace-maker’s chair or of the rowlock without making replicas, counterfeits.

A. Yes, I agree. In fact ours is the period in which “multiples” were created.

O. To return to our project, how do you experience the relationship between conceiving a form and seeing it realized by means of the technology of a modern factory?

A. That is a difficult question. I have to abandon the sculptor’s point of view and see the problem from an opposite angle.

The invention of form for purposes of its reproducibility. I don’t think I am the most suitable person, because everything I have done is form, perhaps ugly, but mine, and the material I have used is what I have chosen. But at the same time I need the collaboration of technicians, given that, in the case of an article of furniture, it is intended to serve a precise function. One also has to know the measurements of the body, of a lot of things. A seat which must travel on an aeroplane at great speed has various different aspects which have to be taken into account. I needed the calculations of aviation technicians to devise a form that would resist a wind of 200 km. an hour for a sculpture which found its place in Madagascar. I made my sculpture respect that form.

Q. Do you think that industrial production can serve to promote a certain way of living, or is it that man has certain inherent needs to which it is therefore the task of industrial production today to adapt itself?

A. That depends on man’s folly; soon men will be living underground and nothing more will be seen of them.

Q. Furnishings will change.

D. Cambierà l’arredamento!

CARLO MO Nasce a Rocchette Piovene nel 1923.

Scultore di grandi spazi, ha lavorato essenzialmente con l’acciaio, materiale adatto al suo temperamento di costruttore. Nelle sue sculture la componente espressionista-astratta si concilia con l’utilizzo di moduli compositivi sviluppati in forma contratta, forse ancestrale.

Nella sua scultura si fonde la violenza gestuale con un desiderio di ordine formale. Ha realizzato opere per spazi pubblici in Madagascar, all’aeroporto Forlanini di Milano ed anche al Museo Hirshorn di Washington D.C. Nel dopoguerra ha vissuto a lungo nel Congo Belga, facendosi coinvolgere dallo spazio e dallo stile di vita propri dell’Africa. In quel contesto ha compiuto studi approfonditi sull’arte negra.

Nel 1953 torna in Italia dedicandosi, oltre che alla scultura, al giornalismo e alla grafica. È più volte presente alla Triennale di Milano, nel 1954, nel 1968 e nel 1973. Ha avuto la Cattedara di Scultura alla Nuova Accademia di Milano.

Vive e lavora a Pavia.

Carlo Mo was born at Rocchette Piovene in 1923.

A sculptor of large spaces, his main material is steel, a material which suits his constructor's temperament. In his sculptures the abstract-expressionist component is reconciled with modules of composition developed in a contracted, perhaps ancestral form.

There is a violence of gesture but also a sense of format order.

He has made sculptures for public spaces: in Madagascar, at the Forlanini airport in Milan, and also at the Hirshorn Museum in Washington D.C. After the war he lived for years in the Belgian Congo were he absorbed the sense of space and the style of life of Africa. In this period he made a close study of negro art.

In 1953 he returned to Italy and dedicated himself, in addition to sculpture, to journalism and graphic work.

He exhibited at the Milan Triennale in 1954, 1968 and 1973 and was head of the sculpture department of the Nuova Accademia di Milano.

He lives and works in Pavia.

O. Did our invitation to design an article of furniture take you by surprise? Had you previously thought of doing or done something in this field?

R. Non sono stato veramente sorpreso.

Gli artisti appartenenti all’area costruttivista-minimalista, hanno la reputazione di essere interessati alla creazione di oggetti funzionali. È certo per questa ragione, che sono stato più volte sollecitato a farlo. Ma deve anche essere perché forse non sono un vero costruttivista-minimalista, che fino ad ora non avevo mai veramente fatto progetti per “un oggetto che serva a qualcosa”.

A. I wasn't really surprised. Artists belonging to the constructivist-minimalist area have the reputation of being interested in the creation of functional objects. It is certainly for this reason that I have several times been asked to. But it must also be because perhaps I am not a real constructivist-minimalist that I had not so far ever really designed ‘‘an object useful for something".

Q. Do you consider the designing of a useful object as being on the same plane as your work as a sculptor or do you feel that the necessary functionality is a limitation?

R. Sì, possono essere dello stesso livello, se si ammette che esistano livelli di qualità, di merito, ecc... No, per me non sono dello stesso mondo, se si paragona il mondo dell’industria moderna a quello della “pittura”, quest’ultimo rifugio del meno di niente e del fatto male. Poiché è in questa estrema riserva, della “pittura” e del “disegno” che si può ancora trovare un genio intento a fare un capolavoro con un modestissimo investimento iniziale, per esempio da 10 a 1.000 franchi, a seconda che utilizzi un pezzettino di carta o una grande tela; tutte le altre arti, fanno oggi appello all’industria. Ogni nuova tecnologia che ha permesso una diffusione a buon mercato, è stata un vantaggio per l’appassionato d’arte povero, e una catastrofe per l’artista povero. Da Gutenberg, Edison, Lumière ecc..., poeti, romanzieri o musicisti, sono condannati a trovare, persino prima che le loro opere esistano, molti soldi grazie a uno sponsor, un’eredità o uno studio di mercato. Gli architetti o gli scultori monumentali avevano anch’essi, e da sempre, gli stessi problemi. La frontiera dunque, secondo me, non si situa tra oggetti funzionali e opere d'arte che sono ancora realizzate dai loro creatori, con mezzi spesso molto a buon mercato, e spesso venduti a prezzi molto cari. La mia produzione, forse, si trova alla frontiera tra questi due mondi. In effetti, è il mio assistente che realizza la maggior parte delle mie “pitture”, dei tecnici, le mie opere di “integrazione d’architettura”, e la Tecno il mio oggetto funzionale. Ciò non toglie che adoro l’opera d’arte inutile e frivola. L’oggetto funzionale e serio infatti mi fa un po’ paura, lo considero l’uno come vacanza e l’altro come lavoro; ma è naturalmente, anche perché per 25 anni

Architects and monumental sculptors have always had the same problems. The frontier, therefore, according to me, is not between functional objects and works of art, but, rather, between all the works requiring technicians, machines and money for their realization and those works of art which are still realized by their creators, with means often very cheap, and often sold at very high prices. My production perhaps lies on the frontier between these two worlds. In effect, it is my assistant that does most of my “painting", technicians my work of “integration of architecture", and Tecno my functional object. This does not alter the fact that I adore the useless and frivolous work of art. The serious and functional object in fact

D. Che rapporto c’è tra il tuo lavoro creativo e lo spazio in cui abiti?

R. Ho trovato già costruita la casa nella quale abito, i mobili antichi sono stati scelti 30 anni fa seguendo soprattutto il gusto di mia moglie, e mi trovo bene così, lo mi sento veramente responsabile soltanto dei quadri che sono sui muri, ed è ampiamente sufficiente per la mia tranquillità. Non vedo neppure molto rapporto fra il mio lavoro e la città dove abito, ne vedrei piuttosto con il paese in cui vivo. In effetti credo che il mio gusto per l’irrazionale e l’assurdo allo stesso tempo, il rigore e l’ironia, sia abbastanza tipico di una certa cultura francese.

D. Fino all’inizio del secolo la funzione di

un oggetto veniva camuffata, “artisticamente” dall’artigiano. Con le avanguardie storiche, Costruttivismo e Bauhaus, al contrario, si è evidenziato il valore estetico del dato tecnologico.

Qual è per te la relazione tra funzione e forma?

R. Il rapporto tra funzione e forma è stato

la base di una moda della quale il Bauhaus ha dato esempi molto belli.

Ho creduto, è passato molto tempo, alle qualità morali di quegli oggetti austeri che sono tanto piaciuti negli ambienti giovani, chic e seri. Non ci credo più adesso. La mia “détabilisation” ha d’altronde ben più a vedere con l’ironia e l’assurdo che con il funzionalismo.

D. Nella produzione dei mobili disegnati da Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier e Rietveld, cosa ti sembra sia nella loro riproposlzione oggi, opera “feticistica” oppure di validità dal punto di vista della produzione industriale contemporanea? • R. Per me si tratta di copie, belle e care, dell'antico. Hanno il vantaggio di potere essere più facilmente fedeli ai modelli poiché dal 1930 in avanti le tecniche sono meno cambiate che dal tempo di Luigi XV.

D. Dal grande rigore delle avanguardie storiche si è arrivati oggi al movimento Post-moderno. Questi due estremi inducono oggi a riflettere sulle necessità ambientali deN’uomo, che ha bisogno anche dal fantastico. Come si può ritornare oggi ad una progettazione fantastica degli oggetti d’uso? A tuo parere è utile, necessario e auspicabile?

R. Credo che una delle grandi costanti

frightens me a little. I consider the one as holiday and the other as work; but this is, naturally, also because for 25 years I produced functional objects during the week and works of art during the week­ ends.

D. What relationship is there between your creative work and the space in which you live?

A. I found the house in which I live already built, the antique furniture was chosen 30 years ago according, above all, to the taste of my wife, and that suits me fine.

I feel really responsible only for the paintings on the walls, and that is amply sufficient for my peace of mind. I do not even see much relationship between my work and the town where I live; I should say my work relates more to the country in which I live. In effect I believe that my taste for the irrational and absurd, rigour and irony, is fairly typical of a certain French culture.

O. Until the start of the century the function of an object was “artistically" disguised by the craftsman. With the historical avant-gardes, Constructivism and the Bauhaus, the aesthetic value of the technological aspect came to be emphasized. What is your view of the relationship between function and form?

A. The relationship between function and form was the basis of a fashion of which the Bauhaus gave very beautiful examples. I believed, a long time has passed, in the moral qualities of those austere objects so popular in youthful chic and serious circles. Now / don’t believe in them any more. My “detabilisation”, in any case, has much more to do with irony and the absurd than with functionalism.

Q. What do you think is “fetishistic” or, instead, valid from the point of view of modern industrial production, in the reproposal today of the furniture designed

by Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier or Rietveld?

A. For me they are copies, fine and expensive, of the old. They have the advantage of being more easily faithful to the models because since 1930 techniques have changed less than since the time of Louis XV. Q. From the great rigour of the historic avant-gardes one has come to the Post­ modern movement of today. These two extremes prompt reflections concerning the environmental needs of man, who has a need also of the fantastic. How can one return today to an imaginative design of

dell’uomo sia la sua incostanza, il suo gusto per il cambiamento, per differenziarsi, grazie alla moda, da un altro gruppo sociale o da un’altra generazione, lo amo la moda, mi dà molto piacere vedere l'evoluzione del gusto, ed anche dei miei stessi gusti. Trovo che un ritorno a del progetti fantastici per degli oggetti funzionali non sia nè necessario nè auspicabile, ma divertente.

D. Che rapporto hai con I materiali e con i problemi tecnico-costruttivi? Ti interessa progettarli, considerandoli parte integrante del tuo lavoro, o demandi volentieri II loro studio a tecnici specializzati?

R. Amo molto lavorare con degli assistenti, con dei tecnici che mi fanno economizzare il mio tempo, qualche volta le idee. Nel caso specifico del tavolo realizzato dalla Tecno, non avrei mai avuto il coraggio di fare un progetto senza l’aiuto di mio figlio Frédéric, con il suo entusiasmo, la sua abilità e le sue idee.

D. Pensi che, attraverso la produzione

industriale, si possa promuovere un certo modo di vivere ed abitare, oppure che certe soluzioni siano radicate nelle necessità dell’uomo?

R. Come ho detto poco fa, l’oggetto

funzionale mi fa un po’ paura, e aggiungerei che i promotori di nuove maniere del vivere, se avessero un reale potere, mi terrorizzerebbero.

useful objects? In your opinion, is this useful, necessary, desirable?

A. I think that one of the great constants of man is his inconstancy, his taste for change, for differentiating himself, thanks to fashion, from another social group of from another generation. I love fashion, I take great pleasure in seeing the evolution of taste, and also of my own tastes. I think that a return to an imaginative designing of functional objects is neither necessary nor desirable, but amusing.

Q. What relationship do you have with materials and with technical-constructive problems ? Are you interested in these aspects of designing, considering them an integral part of your work, or are you content to leave them to specialized technicians?

A. I very much like working with assistants, with technicians who make me economize on my time and sometimes my ideas. In the specific case of the table produced by Tecno, I should never have had the courage to design it without the help of my son Frédéric, with his enthusiasm, his ability and his ideas.

Q. Do you think that it is possible, by means of industrial production, to promote a certain way of living, or that certain solutions are rooted in the needs of man?

A. As I said a little while ago, the functional object frightens me a little, and I should add that promoters of new ways of living, if they had real power, would terrorize me.

FRANÇOIS MORELLET Nasce a Cholet nel 1926.

Nel 1950 comincia ad interessarsi a forme astratto-geometriche, per lo più a struttura uniforme. La sua ricerca iniziale lo condurrà a superfici bicromatiche distribuite con un concetto sistematico, e nel 1956 alle prime trame sovrapposte, sia dipinte che metalliche, determinanti effetti retinici di mutamento dell’immagine. Dal 1948 al 1975 si è inoltre occupato di progettazione industriale, nell’azienda di famiglia.

Nel 1960 partecipa a Parigi alia Fondazione del GRAV (Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel) e precisa il suo interesse per la percezione visiva. Dal 1963 studia il rapporto tra percezione e ambiente creando spazi che coinvolgono e circondano lo spettatore.

Nel 1973 inizia le prime “Destabilizzazioni”. Partecipa a molte esposizioni internazionali tra cui, nel 1965, “The Responsive Eye” al Muséum of Modem Art di New York. Nel 1968 è presente a “Documenta “3” a Kassel e successivamente alla 4- e 53 Edizione, ed alla XIV Triennale di Milano. Nel 1971 al Centre National d’Art Contemporain di Parigi, nel 1981 alla Mostra “Paris-Paris” al Centre Pompidou, nel 1983 alla mostra “Arte Programmata e Cinetica 1953-1963” a Palazzo Reale a Milano.

Nel 1984 gli è dedicata una personale itinerante in alcuni musei americani, nel 1986 ancora una personale al Centre Pompidou e allo Stedelijk di Amsterdam. Ha eseguito numerose opere per edifici pubblici in tutta Europa.

Vive e lavora a Cholet.

FREDERIC MORELLET Nasce a Clisson, in Francia, nel 1947.

Vive a Cholet dove condivide con il padre François la responsabilità dello studio, assistendolo talvolta nelle opere di integrazione di architettura.

Per la Collezione ABV François e Frédéric Morellet hanno progettato il tavolo “Détabilisation n. 1”.

François Morellet was born at Cholet, in France, in 1926.

In 1950 he began to be interested in abstract-geometrical forms usually of uniform structure. His initial research led him on to bichromatic surfaces distributed on a systematic basis and, in 1956, to the first superimposed patterns, whether painted or metallic, determining retinal effects of change of image. From 1948 to 1975 he was also engaged in industrial design in the family factory.

In 1960 he took part in the foundation of GRA V (Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel) and his interest in visual perception became more definite. Since 1963 he has studied the relationship between perception and environment, by creating spaces surrounding and involving the spectator.

In 1973 came the first “Destabilizations’’.

He has taken part in many international exhibitions, among them “The Responsive Eye" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1965; the Documenta 3, 4 and 6 “exhibitions at Kassel, the XIV Milan Triennale in 1968; the Centre National d'Art Contemporain exhibition in Paris in 1971; the “Paris-Paris’’ exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in 1981; the “Arte Programmata e Cinetica 1953-1963” exhibition at the Palazzo Reale, Milan, in 1983; in 1984 a travelling exhibition of his work visited a number of American museums; in 1986 an exhibition of his work was held at the Centre Pompidou, and at the Stedelijk Museum. Amsterdam.

His work has been commissioned for public buildings throughout Europe.

He lives and works at Cholet.

D. L’invito della Tecno a progettare un mobile ti ha colto di sorpresa?

Q. Did Tecno’s invitation to design an article of furniture take you by surprise?

R. No, non mi ha colto di sorpresa, tanto è vero che già alla fine degli anni ’50 fino a metà degli anni '60 ho lavorato con la Tecno; è stato per me piacevole riprendere in esame lo studio della progettazione di un mobile.

A. No, it didn’t take me by surprise; in fact i did things with Tecno from the late 1950s until the middle of the 1960s. It was a pleasure to find myself involved in designing an article of furniture again.

D. Che rapporto hai con la forma del tuo

lavoro trasposta in un ambito diverso?

Consideri la progettazione di un oggetto d’uso come un aspetto diverso, ma non secondario, del tuo impegno inventivo o senti, a causa della funzionalità necessaria, che si viene ad operare uno spostamento di termini e anche di valori?

R. Quando penso a un mobile, penso

subito alla sua funzionalità, poi alla sua forma. In questo caso ho pensato ad un letto/divano che può essere posto anche al centro di una stanza, un oggetto da usufruire con godimento da più persone.

D. Che rapporto c’è tra il tuo lavoro di

scultore e il modo in cui vivi?

R. lo ho due case. Una in città, molto

razionale e moderna, in cui vivo poco, pensata soprattutto per ricevere gli amici e le persone dell’ambiente culturale ed artistico; e una in campagna - era una cascina - che godo di più perché è libera e informale, con molti mobili semplici trovati in diversi luoghi di antiquariato, con tanti oggetti di varie civiltà che raccolgo andando in giro per il mondo.

D. In quale delle due case, situazioni, ti

identifichi di più?

R. In nessuna delle due, sono solo due situazioni. Infine mi vedrei meglio in una casa di pietra con un materasso che stendo per terra la sera per dormire, un tavolo, qualche sedia, alla maniera francescana, rinunciando a tutte le cose che mi piacciono. Uno spazio ideale che non ho ancora raggiunto, un’utopia. Il letto/divano che ho studiato (il cui titolo è “Triclinio”) vuol essere un baldacchino alla maniera antica. Ricordo nell’infanzia la difficoltà di salire su certi letti: ho quindi pensato ad elementi che si possono muovere, diventando gradini estraibili.

Su questi gradini ci si può anche sedere, fino a otto persone.

D. Rispetto alla produzione storica dei

mobili moderni, cioè quelli nati nell’ambito neoplastico costruttivista e Bauhaus, quale ti sembra essere un dato acquisito da mantenere come codice permanente e cosa ti sembra invece da sfumare; in poche parole che cos’è oggi destinato al

Q. What relationship do you have with the form of your work transposed to another sphere? Do you consider designing a useful object a different, but not secondary, aspect of your inventive commitment, or do you find that the need for functionality gives rise to a difference of terms and also of values?

A. When I think of furniture, / think first of its functionality, then of its form. In this case I thought of a sofa which would be appropriate even in the middle of a room, an object which could be used with pleasure by a number of people.

Q. What relationship is there between your work as a sculptor and the way you live?

A. I have two homes. One in town, very rational and modern, in which I live little; it is conceived above all as a place for receiving friends and people belonging to the cultural and artistic world. And one in the country - it was a farm-house - which I find more enjoyable because it is free and informal, with a lot of simple antique furniture picked up here and there and a large number of objects belonging to different civilizations that I collect in the course of my travels.

O. With which of the two homes, of the two situations, do you identify yourself more?

A. Neither with one nor with the other: they are ju st two situations. In the end I see myself better in a stone house with a mattress that I lay on the floor to sleep on at night, a table, some chairs, in the Franciscan manner, renouncing all the things that I like; an ideal space I haven’t yet achieved; a Utopia. The sofa I have designed, named “Triclinio”, is meant to be a “baldacchino” in the ancient manner.

I have a childhood memory of the difficulty of climbing up on to certain beds, so I thought of elements that could be moved, steps that can be pulled out and on which one can also seat up to eight persons.

Q. With regard to the historic production of modern furniture, that is, the furniture created by the neo-plastic and constructivist movements and by the Bauhaus, what aspect do you think should be maintained permanently, and what not?

museo o ancora usufruibile nella vita quotidiana?

museum and what is still useful for everyday life?

R. Trovo che tutto quello che è stato fatto dal gruppo operante nel Bauhaus sia veramente Importante, al punto che oggi siamo ancora a goderci i mobili da loro studiati. Occorre ricordare che è stato fondamentale l’apporto di Kandinsky e di Klee insieme ai maestri dell’architettura, quali Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Braeuer.

A. I think that everything produced by the group working at the Bauhaus is very important, to the point that we still enjoy the furniture that they designed. One should bear in mind the contribution of fundamental importance of Kandinsky and Klee as well as of architects such as Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Braeuer...

D. Secondo te, sono tutti usufruibili a

livello dell’uso quotidiano, i mobili e gli oggetti pensati in quel periodo?

R. Nonostante tutto, quando si vuole una

poltrona o un divano comodo, si scelgono le sedie di Mies van der Rohe, o quelle di Le Corbusier.

D. Ci sono anche mobili molto scomodi,

come la sedia di Rietveld piuttosto che la Vassily di Braeuer.

R. La Vassily non è una poltrona dove ci

si deve rilassare, come la Frau o la poltrona di Charles Eames. Va collocata in uno studio appropriato, in una sala d’aspetto, in una hall. Ci sono sempre stati mobili o cose inutili o scomode, che hanno solo una funzione visiva di ornamento.

D. Sono d’accordo. Hai tenuto conto di

tutta l’esperienza tua nel progettare e nel disegnare questo mobile per la Tecno?

R. Le mie esperienze alla Tecno sono

state utilissime, con soluzioni, accorgimenti, inserimenti, a volte riuscitissimi a volte meno. Oggi, per esempio, le decorazioni dei bar, fatte negli anni ’60, non le farei così; mentre in quell’epoca hanno avuto un grande successo, come pure le testate di letto in ottone martellinato, di tipo classicheggiante, che ricordavano alcuni letti siciliani. Ce ne sono stati altri invece con elementi assolutamente sculturali, meno riusciti come mobili, mentre a mio avviso sono rimasti validi dal punto di vista artistico.

D. Comunque tu credi, in considerazione

Q. The objects and furniture produced in that period vary greatly. In your opinion, is it all good for daily use or not?

A. In spite of everything, when one wants a comfortable arm-chair or divan one chooses Mies van der Rohe’s rather than Le Corbusier’s.

Q. But there are also some that are uncomfortable, such as Rietveld’s chair or Braeuer's Vassily.

A. The Vassily is not an arm-chair for relaxing in like Frau’s and Charles Eame’s arm-chairs. The right place for it is in an appropriate office, in a waiting-room, in a lobby. There have always been useless or uncomfortable furniture and objects that have only a visual and ornamental function.

Q. I agree. In designing this article for Tecno, did you find your past experience useful?

A. My experiences with Tecno have been most useful: solutions, devices, insertions, some highly successful, other less so.

Today, for example, the decorations for bars, done in the 1960s, I wouldn’t do in the same way, whereas at the time they were highly successful, as also the bushhammered brass bed-heads of vaguely classical type, reminiscent of some Sicilian beds. On the other hand, there were others with absolutely sculptural elements: those were less successful as furniture but in my opinion have retained their value from the artistic point of view.

Q. In any case, do you believe, considering your past experience with the

R. Credo proprio di sì. Altrimenti avrei

risposto gentilmente di non essere interessato. Anzi ritengo che si sia aspettato troppo: la Tecno con l’architetto Borsani si è sempre imposta per questa sua novità di collaborazione con gli artisti.

Si sono fatte delle cose straordinarie; ricordo che fu Lucio Fontana a introdurre me e mio fratello Giò, quando arrivammo a Milano. Mi fa quindi molto piacere che oggi si sia ripreso un rapporto attivo con gli artisti.

D. Quale effetto ti ha fatto la visita alla

fabbrica come è divenuta attualmente, una fra le più avanzate in Italia dal punto di vista tecnologico? E che rapporto hai con i materiali e i problemi tecnici e costruttivi? Ti interessa progettarli e considerarli come parte integrante del tuo lavoro, o demandi volentieri il loro studio ai tecnici specializzati?

R. La progettazione dal punto di vista

inventivo è quella che mi interessa di più, mente mi viene più difficile pensare all’aspetto tecnico, alla soluzione specifica. Per questo progetto mi auguro che tutti i vari meccanismi siano scorrevoli, non diventino macchinosi, siano ben nascosti e mi affido perciò alla tecnologia della Tecno. Certo ora la visita in fabbrica mi ha stupito, in confronto al tipo di lavorazione degli anni ’60.

D. Pensi che attraverso questa

produzione industriale si possa promuovere un certo modo nuovo di vivere e abitare, oppure ritieni che certe soluzioni siano radicate nelle necessità dell’uomo e che quindi il compito della produzione industriale oggi sia solo di assecondarle?

R. Mi sembra che oggi i giovani, travolti

architect Borsani, that what you are now doing for Tecno is a case of imaginative designing of useful objects? In the context of this idea, which refers to the artistic invention and the great traditions of research of the twentieth century, do you think the co-operation of artists, architect and factory is possible?

A. I think it is. Otherwise I should have said very politely that I wasn’t interested.

In fact I think that it is overdue: Tecno under the architect Borsani always obtained success from the novelty of the collaboration of artists. Extraordinary things were achieved. I remember it was Lucio Fontana who introduced us, my brother and I, when we arrived in Milan.

So I am very pleased that the active relationship with artists has now been resumed.

Q. What was the effect on you of visiting the factory now that it has become one of the most advanced in Italy in technological terms? And what is your relationship with the materials and with technical and constructional problems?

Are you interested in these aspects and consider them an essential part of your work, or are you happy to delegate them to specialized technicians?

A. The inventive aspect of designing is the one that interests me most, rather than the technical aspect, the specific solutions. In the case of this object, I hope that all the various mechanisms will work smoothly and easily and will be well concealed, and for this rely on Tecno’s technological capacity. Certainly, visiting the factory now astonished me; compared with the working processes of the 1960s.

Q. Do you think that this industrial production can serve to promote a certain way of living or do you think that certain solutions are radicated in man’s needs and so the task of industrial production is simply to conform to them?

A. It seems to me that today young people are overwhelmed by the information coming from television, magazines and newspapers. When they come to furnish a

dall’informazione sia televisiva che delle riviste e dei giornali, abbiano idee confuse quando pensano ad arredare la loro prima casa. Il compito di una fabbrica di mobili è quindi quello di offrire un prodotto che duri nel tempo, legato alla tradizione classica e moderna, di buona esecuzione; requisiti per i quali la Tecno si è sempre distinta. Proprio per questo sono stato lieto di dare un mio contributo.

D. Questo impegno di orientamento del gusto, è un impegno grosso che in qualche modo stride con una più normale politica di mercato. A parte la Tecno, che opinione hai della produzione industriale odierna?

R. A me pare che oggi le grosse industrie, Gavina, Knoll, Cassina, ripropongano soprattutto i grandi maestri. Quando vedo altri progetti, sono spesso molto perplesso: a volte ci sono proposte con soluzioni Ironiche e fin troppo scherzose.

Mi sembra che l’unica persona che abbia raggiunto risultati innovativi e felici nella progettazione è Ettore Sottsass, che ha sempre pensato al mobile/oggetto che diventa una “presenza”. Gli artisti sono spesso tenuti fuori dalla progettazione del mobile; alcuni non hanno risolto il compito felicemente, sono rimasti troppo legati al loro stile espressivo; ma cl sono altri che hanno progettato pezzi validissimi e molto interessanti, per esempio Mario Cerali con i tavoli e le sedie. La casa di Maurizio Calvesi a Roma ne è un esempio eccellente.

D. Tu sei per la progettazione fantastica dell’oggetto d’uso?

R. Certamente. Scelgo sempre la progettazione fantastica, ma razionale insieme, cioè non solo scenografica; mi preoccupo della funzione di un oggetto.

Tanto è vero che non mi è venuta in mente una sedia, perché mi è difficile pensare ad una sedia; ho invece studiato alcune panchine, che sono infatti più legate al mio lavoro di scultore. Infine questo letto/divano con una forma massiccia e pesante, con una sua presenza precisa.

D. Quindi uno scopo attuale e ben centrato è oggi, unire un certo elemento fantastico alla funzione dell’oggetto di uso quotidiano.

R. Mi pare che una buona ricerca debba avere oggi questo indirizzo progettuale e questa misura di linguaggio.

The task of a furniture factory is thus that of offering them a product which is durable , linked to the classic and modern tradition, and well made: qualities for which Tecno has always been outstanding. It is precisely for this reason that I am happy to make a contribution.

Q. This commitment as regards the orientation of taste assumed by the furniture industries is something more than a normal market policy. Tecno apart, what opinion have you formed about modern furniture production?

A. It seems to me that today the large industries, Gavina, Knoll, Cassina, repropose above all the great masters.

When I see other designs, I am often puzzled: at times there are proposals of solutions which are ironical or excessively facetious. It seems to me that the only person to achieve innovatory and felicitous results in design is Ettore Sottsass, who has always thought of the furniture/object that becomes a “presence”. Artists are often kept out of furniture design; some have not found a felicitous solution to the problem, remaining too tied to their expressive style; but there are others who have designed excellent and very interesting pieces, for example Mario Ceroli, with his tables and chairs. Maurizio Catvesi’s house in Rome is an excellent example.

Q. Are you in favour of the imaginative designing of a useful object?

A. Yes, certainly. I always prefer imaginative design which at the same time is rational, that is, not merely scenographic; I am interested in an object’s function, so much so that no chair came to mind: it is difficult for me to think of a chair. But I did think of some benches, which are in fact more closely connected with my work as a sculptor.

And finally this sofa, with a solid, heavy form and a precise presence of its own.

Q. Thus a good modern objective is to combine a certain imaginative element with the function of an object of everyday use.

A. It seems to me that valid research today calls for this project orientation and this sort of language.

ARNALDO POMODORO Nasce a Mordano di Romagna nel 1926.

Si trasferisce a Milano nel 1954. Le sue opere del '50, principalmente in piombo, sono altorilievi dove emerge, inedita nella scultura, una singolarissima “scrittura". A partire dagli anni '60 le sue opere in bronzo divengono solidi primari: sfere, colonne, piramidi, corrosi, investigati da fitti segni che sono una rottura di questa perfezione e che conferiscono loro una vita diversa.

Il suo lavoro ha trasferito in scultura l’inventività specifica del segno.

Ha ricevuto prestigiosi premi: alla Biennale di San Paolo nel '63 e a quella di Venezia nel ’64, uno dei sei premi internazionali del Carnagie Institute nel ’67, il gran premio Henry Moore in Giappone nell’81 e, sempre in Giappone, il Praemium Imperiale 1990. Le sue maggiori esposizioni personali: alla Rotonda della Besana di Milano nel 74, al Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris nel 76, al Forte di Belvedere di Firenze nel 1984; esposizioni itineranti nei musei americani e ancora in Giappone, Australia ed Europa.

Sue opere sono presenti in molti contesti urbani in tutto il mondo.

Ha insegnato nelle Università di Stanford e Berkeley in California.

Da sempre interessato al teatro, ha realizzato numerose scenografie e di recente è tornato con “macchine spettacolari” in grandi occasioni teatrali italiane. Le più recenti: “La passione di Cleopatra” di Shawqi nel 1989, per cui gli è stato conferito il premio Ubu 1990, e “I paraventi” di Genet nel 1990.

Vive e lavora a Milano.

Per la Collezione ABV Arnaldo Pomodoro ha progettato il letto/divano “Triclinio”.

Arnaldo Pomodoro was bom at Morciano di Romagna in 1926.

He moved to Milan in 1954. His works of the 1950s, mostly in lead, are high-reliefs which reveal, a novelty in sculpture, a very particular “writing".

From the 1960s his works in bronze became primary solids: spheres, columns, pyramids, which are corroded, and thickly scored in a way that disrupts that perfection and gives the works a new life.

His work has transferred to sculpture the specific inventionpossibility of the sign.

He has been awarded many important prizes: at the San Paulo Biennale in 1963, the Venice Biennale in 1964, one of the six international prizes of the Carnegie Institute in 1967, the Henry Moore Prize in Japan in 1981 and, also in Japan, the Imperial Prize in 1990. His main exhibitions: at the Rotonda della Besana, Milan, in 1974; at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, in 1976; at the Forte di Belvedere, Florence, in 1984. Travelling exhibitions of his work have visited American museums, Japan, Australia and European countries, His works have been installed in many urban contexts all over the world. He has taught at the Universities of Stanford and Berkeley in California.

Always interested in the theatre, he has designed numerous theatrical sets and recently has designed “spectacular machines’’ for important Italian theatrical occasions. The most recent: Shawqui’s “The passion of Cleopatra", 1989, for which he was awarded the 1990 Ubu Prize, and Genets “The Screens”, 1990.

He lives and works in Milan.

GIÒ PONTI Nasce a Milano nel 1891.

Sul finire degli anni Venti sviluppa un personale e singolare approccio alle tematiche della modernità e dell'abitazione. A quegli anni risalgono le prime sperimentazioni nel campo dell’arredo e dell’oggetto domestico, così come le prime prove nel campo dell’architettura, prove che sviluppano il suo gusto per il neoclassico e per l’art-decò.

Già in questo periodo Ponti dedica la propria creatività sia al fronte dell’oggetto singolo sia a quello dell’architettura che lo vede avviare la serie delle cosiddette “case tipiche”, da lui denominate “Domus".

Così pure “Domus” si chiamò la rivista da lui fondata nel 1928 con il proposito di elaborare e diffondere le nuove idee e il nuovo gusto.

Ponti, assertore della necessaria convergenza tra arte e industria, ebbe un ruolo determinante nel Dopoguerra, nella nascente produzione industriale di arredo e di oggetti, e negli anni Sessanta si avvicinò ai temi dell’architettura sociale. La sua vita è una continua e rinnovata esplosione creativa di cui rimangono grandi testimonianze, dalle ceramiche agli interni, dalle sedie ai grattacieli e alle cattedrali.

Muore a Milano nel 1979.

La Collezione ABV propone, di Giò Ponti, il “Triposto”: un sedile scrittoio progettato per la Tecno nel 1967.

Gid Ponti was bom in Milan in 1891.

Towards the end of the 1920s he developed a singular approach to the themes of modernity and the habitation. This was the period of his first experimentations in the field of furnishing and domestic objects and of his first works in the field of architecture, works which developed his neoclassical taste and his declensions of “art deco".

In this period, applying his creativity both to the single object and to the architecture, he began the series of so-called “typical habitations”, which he called “domus”. “Domus'' was also the name of the magazine founded in 1928 for the purpose of elaborating and diffusing the new ideas and the new taste.

In the immediate post-war period, Ponti, who considered the convergence of art and industry a necessity, showed an increasing interest in the new industrial production of furnishings and domestic objects, while in the 1960s he concerned himself with themes of social architecture. His life was a continuous and ever renewed creative explosion of which many important testimonies remain: from pottery to interiors, from chairs to skyscrapers and cathedrals.

He died in Milan in 1979.

Gid Ponti is represented in the Coiiezione ABV by the “Triposto”, a seat-desk designed for Tecno in 1967.

MAN RAY Nasce a Filadelfia nel 1890. È stato uno dei grandi personaggi di questo secolo: pittore, fotografo, cineasta, disegnatore, creatore di oggetti paradossali, che egli chiamava gli “Objects of my affection”, ed infine scrittore.

Ha partecipatp con la sua opera a tutta la storia del Dadaismo e del Surrealismo. È stato un precursore in tutti i campi del suo lavoro, è stato un Inventore, ha stimolato un’intera generazione di artisti.

Inizia a fotografare nel 1914 e verso gli anni '20 inventa la tecnica rivoluzionaria del “Rayographe”. Nel 1915 partecipa alla mostra del “Modem Movement in the American Art” alla Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester (N.Y.) e, sempre nello stesso anno, tiene la sua prima personale alla galleria Daniel di New York. Nel 1920 corrisponde con Tristan Tzara. Produce fotografie e film sperimentali in collaborazione con Marcel Duchamp. Nello stesso anno firma con Duchamp e Katerine Dreier l’atto costitutivo della “Société Anonyme Ine.” Nel luglio del 1921 arriva a Parigi dove Duchamp lo introduce neN’ambiente artistico della città. Durante la seconda guerra mondiale torna in America e a Hollywood trova fama come ritrattista. Nel 1947 rientra a Parigi insieme alla moglie Juliet e si installa a Rue Ferou. Quel mitico studio diventa un punto di riferimento per l’intellighenzia di tutto il mondo.

Muore a Parigi nel 1976.

Di Man Ray la Collezione ABV propone la poltrona in legno “Armchair”, che l’artista aveva realizzato in due esemplari, in data antecedente il 1930.

Man Ray was born in Philadelphia in 1890.

He was one of the major figures of this century: painter, photographer, film-maker, designer, creator of paradoxical objects which he called “Objects of my affection" and, finally, writer.

His work illustrates the entire history of Dadaism and Surrealism.

He was a precursor in every field in which he worked, an inventor who stimulated an entire generation of artists. His photographic portraits of the artists and writers he frequented in the course of his long life are now famous: Picasso, Brancusi, Derain, Breton, Cocteau, Stravinski and many others. Passionately interested in feminine beauty, he portrayed it times without number, above all in the person of his wife Juliet. He discovered the European avantgardes, brought to America by Stieglitz in the 291 Gallery, when he met Marcel Duchamp, whose dadaist spirit he shared throughout his life. He started to take photographs in 1914 and towards the 1920s invented the revolutionary technique of the “Rayograph". In 1915 he took part in the “Modern Movement in the American Art" exhibition at the Memorial Art gallery, Rochester (N. Y.) and, in the same year, had his first solo exhibition at the Daniel Gallery in New York. In 1920 he corresponded with Tristan Tzara, produced experimental photographs and films with Marcel Duchamp. In the same year, with Duchamp and Katerine Dreier, he formed the “Société Anonyme Inc.”. In July 1921 he arrived in Paris, where Duchamp introduced him into the artistic circles of the city. Back in America during the Second World War, he gained fame in Hollywood as a portraitist. In 1947 he returned to Paris with his wife Juliet and installed himself in the Rue Ferou. His mythical studio became a land-mark for the “intelligentsia” of the world.

He died in Paris in 1976.

A. No, but it wasn't such a surprise either, because I ’ve always kept somewhere in the back of my mind the notion that such a possibility might one day occur.

D. Consideri la progettazione di un oggetto d’uso sullo stesso plano del tuo impegno di scultore o senti la funzionalità necessaria come una limitazione?

Q. Do you consider designing a useful object at the same level as your commitment as sculptor, or see the necessary functionality as a restriction?

A. I have always kept in mind the relationship between my paintings and other objects in the environment. Most of my day-to-day work consists in making decisions about “possible” objects, most of which will never be constructed in the real world. I actually work in many dimensions but usually confine the results to a strictly two-dimensional continuum because I prefer to leave the spectator free to move around in the third dimension without knocking against the object. If you look at the screen you will see that it is also a flat object, but one which is folded through the third dimension. The black and white figuration seems to pass right through the screen, so that one might imagine that it is the space itself which is folded and the screen which remains flat.

Effettivamente lavoro In molte dimensioni, ma abitualmente restringo il risultato ad un continuum strettamente bi-dimenslonale perché preferisco lasciare lo spettatore libero di muoversi nella terza dimensione senza “imbattersi” nell’oggetto. Se guardate II paravento, vedrete che è un oggetto piano, ma anche un oggetto che si sviluppa nella terza dimensione. La figurazione in bianco e nero sembra scorrere attraverso il paravento, così si potrebbe immaginare che sia lo spazio stesso ad essere piegato, mentre il paravento rimane piatto.

D. Che rapporto c’è tra il tuo lavoro

creativo e lo spazio in cui abiti?

R. lo lavoro (o gioco) con le strutture in

modo astratto. Ci sono diversi tipi di utilità, suppongo che per artisti e designers la più importante sia divertire o “piacere”. Ma per me, quando ci sono problemi strutturali da risolvere, non è più importante “piacere”, il mio lavoro a questo punto può anche non piacere a nessuno, nemmeno a me stesso. Le strutture non sono fatte per piacere alla gente, ma questa è solo metà della risposta. Se io fossi stato interessato solamente alla contemplazione platonica delle forme, allora non sarei un artista.

Raramente ci è data l’opportunità di intervenire per la realizzazione di un oggetto utile. Come essere umano amo costruire oggetti che piacciono alla gente, ma nella mia ricerca metto la struttura al primo posto. Comunque esiste un’”arte” che ti permette di fare strutture utilizzabili, combinando i due aspetti in modo tale che si sviluppino entrambi.

Q. Which kind of relationship is there between your creative work and the environment where you live?

A. I work (or play) with structures in an abstract way. There are many types of utility, and I suppose that for artists and designers the most basic one is to afford delight or “to please". But where structural matters are concerned it doesn’t bother me in the least if my work doesn’t please anybody at all, including myself.

Structures are not about pleasing people, but this is only half of the answer. If I were just interested in contemplating forms in a “Platonic” way, then I wouldn’t be an artist. The opportunity to intervene, to do something useful, comes rarely enough.

As a human being I like to please people but in my research I put structures first.

However, there is an “art” of making structures available, of bringing the two sides together in such a way that both causes are advanced.

Q. Until the beginning of the century the function was artistically adorned by the craftsman. With the historical avantgardes, Constructivism and the Bauhaus, the aesthetic value of the technological aspect came to be emphasized. What is your view of the relationship between

R. Mondrian è l’artista che più fortemente ha cercato di connettere, facendone un tutt’uno, le forme e gli spazi della sua pittura con quelle entro le quali viveva al momento. Scrisse anche qualcosa a questo proposito che chiamò “oppressione visiva”, qualcosa che produce un tipo di disgusto generalizzato verso l'ambiente fisico, quello che cercò di combattere nei suoi lavori. Sono d’accordo con lui. Molte cose che vedo nelle case, nei negozi, nelle cucine, negli spazi pubblici eoe., - le trovo completamente inaccettabili. Ho sempre operato così, sono certo che è questo uno dei motivi per cui decisi, ancora giovane, di diventare un artista; per imparare a capire questa sensazione di disgusto, e per cercare di costruire una riuscita critica all’ambiente visivo. La maggior parte del tempo che dedico al lavoro è utilizzato per quella ricerca di cui ho appena parlato, ed lo cerco di operare in questo senso anche nel mio stesso circostante. Ci provo, ma come ho detto, dò la assoluta priorità alla ricerca, così in realtà, non procedo molto bene, per quanto riguarda la mia casa.

Anche Mondrian osservò che se mai questo problema fosse definitivamente risolto, allora non ci sarebbe più bisogno dell’arte. Penso che questo sia probabilmente vero, e che potrebbe essere applicato a entrambi i livelli dell'esperienza, sia pubblica che privata.

Ma siamo ancora molto lontani da questo.

D. Nella produzione dei mobili disegnati da Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier o Rietveld, cosa ti sembra sia, nella loro rlproposlzione oggi, opera “feticistica” oppure di validità dal punto di vista della produzione industriale contemporanea?

R. L’ornamentazione che avete citato, abitualmente rappresenta qualcosa; precisamente alla fine del diciannovesimo secolo Cèzanne compì un drastico intervento a proposito del significato dell’idea di “rappresentazione”. Essendosi fermamente stabilizzata l’immagine fotografica, si sentì libero di fare, in pittura, tutte quelle cose che non si potevano fare con la fotografia. Diede inizio ad una nuova concezione di architettura pittorica che ha avuto incalcolabile influenza su tutta l'arte ed il design del nostro secolo. Ma, come dite voi, è diventata una specificità, è rotta la vecchia unione fra funzione e artigianato.

A. Mondrian is the artist who tried hardest to connect up the forms and spaces in his paintings to those he actually lived in. He also wrote about something he called “visual oppression’’; something which produces a kind of generalised disgust with the physical environment which he tried to combat in his works. I agree with him. Most things that I see - in houses, shops, kitchens, public places etc. - 1find completely unacceptable. I have always done so, and that, I ’m sure, is one reason why I decided, as a young person, to become an artist; to learn to understand this feeling of disgust, and to try to mount a successful critique of the visual environment. Most of my working time is spent on the research I just mentioned, and I also try to work on my own surroundings in this way. I try, but as I said, I give the highest priority to the research aspect, so in the event I don’t succeed very well as far as my house goes. Mondrian also remarked that if this problem were ever to be ultimately resolved, then there would be no further need for art. I think that this is probably true, and that it would apply at both the public and the private levels of experience. But we are still a very long way from that.

Q. What do you think about the actual reproposal of furniture designed by Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier or Rietveld: is it a “kind of fetish” or is it still valid for contemporary industrial production ?

A. The ornamentation you mention usually depicts something, and precisely at the end of the nineteenth century Cézanne made a drastic intervention into what this idea of “depiction” might mean. The photographic image having been firmly established, he felt free to do, in painting, all those things that photography could not do. He initiated a whole new conception of pictorial architecture which has had an incalculable influence on all the art and design of our century. But, as you say, it has become a specialism, and the old unity between function and artisanship is broken. This is a huge loss, but there is also a new possibility to make a work of art or solve a design problem, starting from the point of view of pure thought. Of course this idea of establishing friendly relations between abstract mathematics and the real world of people moving about in spaces and handling objects is already central to Brunelleschi’s project. I would argue that

una nuova possibilità di fare un lavoro d’arte o risolvere un problema di design partendo dal punto di vista del pensiero puro. Naturalmente quest’idea di stabilire una relazione amichevole fra la matematica astratta e il mondo reale della gente che si muove nello spazio maneggiando oggetti, è già al centro del progetto di Brunelleschl. Arguisco che la confusione con il pensiero “fotografico” abbia bloccato il progresso in questo campo fino all’epoca di Cèzanne.

D. Dal grande rigore delle avanguardie storiche si è arrivati oggi al movimento Post-moderno. L’uomo ha bisogno anche del fantastico. Ritornare oggi ad una progettazione fantastica degli oggetti d’uso è a tuo parere necessario e auspicabile?

R. Guardo alla “oppressione visiva”

come ad un risultato dell’evoluzione del capitalismo, una fra le tante conseguenze disturbanti del processo strutturale. Nelle loro risposte a queste situazioni c’è un ovvio legame fra “Strutturalismo”, analisi della società, ed i principi della costruzione in arte e in matematica.

D. Consideri i materiali costruttivi come parte del tuo progetto? Pensi che, attraverso la produzione industriale, si possa promuovere un certo modo di vivere ed abitare?

R. In verità io penso che il metodo costruttivo proponga ciò che si potrebbe chiamare, In un certo senso, un codice “permanente”. Ma dobbiamo fare qui molta attenzione, su quanto è “permanente” e quanto è libero di cambiare. La critica culturale ”Post-strutturalistica” accusa gente come me di cercare di imporre nel mondo un certo sistema estetico autoritario. Ma l’idea del Modernismo/ Costruttivismo non prevede niente di “fisso” in modo totalitario. Effettivamente presuppone una situazione di cambio continuo e la produzione di cose che sono radicalmente nuove. Ciò che è “permanente” si riferisce ancora a Euclide. Le macchine regolate dai computers che abbiamo visto questa mattina in fabbrica, sono regolate, nelle loro funzioni, da leggi completamente Euclidee, e così è per il mio paravento.

C’è stupidamente l’idea errata che Euclide sia in qualche modo “superato” dalla fisica dei Quanti, dal paradosso di Godei o chissà che altro. Ma mi sembra ovvio che non si eliminano fondamenti semplicemente determinandone il loro limite concettuale.

To go back to a fantastic design of objects is in your opinion necessary and desirable?

A. I regard “visual oppression” as a result of the evolution of capitalism; one among many disturbing outcomes of a structural process. In their responses to these situations there is an obvious link to be made between “Structuralist" social analyses and the principles of construction in art and mathematics.

Q. How do you relate to materials and technical and constructive questions ? you think that, through the industrial production, it is possible to promote a certain kind of “way of living" ?

Do

A. As a matter of fact I do think that the constructive method proposes what you could, in a certain sense, call “a permanent code”. But we must be very careful here about just what is “permanent” and what is free to change. “Post-structuralist” cultural criticism accuses people like me of trying to impose a kind of authoritarian aesthetic system on the world. But the ModernistConstructivist idea never envisages anything “fixed" in this totalitarian way.

It actually presupposes a situation of continuous change and the production of things that are radically new. The thing that is “permanent” actually goes back to Euclid.

The compute'r-regulated machines we saw in your factory this morning are all entirely Euclidian in their function, and so is my screen. There is this stupidly mistaken idea about, that Euclid has somehow been “surpassed” by Quantum Physics, by Godei’s paradox or whatever. But it seems obvious to me that you don’t eliminate foundations simply by determining their conceptual limits.

JEFFREY STEELE Nasce a Cardiff, in Gran Bretagna, nel 1931.

Lavora nella tradizione del Costruttivismo e dell’astrazione geometrica. Un aspetto del suo lavoro è caratteristico dei movimenti Optical e Cinetico degli anni Sessanta, ma II suo più profondo impegno riguarda lo sviluppo del contenuto, specificamente pittorico, che lega la percezione empirica del colore con la logica matematica e topologica.

La sua ricerca artistica inizia nei primi anni Sessanta, quando decise di "iniziare tutto da capo” sulle basi di un “criterio di eliminazione”. Jeffrey Steele was bom in Cardiff, Great Britain, in 1931.

He works in the tradition of Constructivism and geometrical abstraction. One aspect of his work is characteristic of the Optical and Kinetic movements of the 1960s but his main interest lies in the development of a content, specifically pictorial, which links the empirical perception of colour to mathematical and topological logic.

His artistic research began in the early 1960s when he decided “to start all over again" on the basis of a “criterion of elimination’’.

Steele is an outstanding example of the artist-researchertheoretician-mathematician-philosopher. He has taught aesthetic theory for thirty years and has taken part in the most important international exhibitions concerned with Optical, Kinetic and Systematic research: “The Responsive Eye" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1965; the “System and Series" exhibition at the Musée des Beaux Arts, Besançon, in 1976; the “Programmed and Kinetic Art 1953-1963" exhibition at the Palazzo Reale, Milan, in 1983; the colour section of the “Art and Science" exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 1986.

He lives and works in Portsmouth, Great Britain.

R. Sì, ma molti anni fa. La vostra è stata comunque una piacevolissima sorpresa e mi ha dato la gioia di rimettermi a pensare a dei mobili di legno, perché il legno, è un materiale meraviglioso. È stata scelta da voi una mia cosa fatta negli anni '30. Non mi ricordo l’anno esatto, ma nel ’36 l’avevo già, l’avrò fatto nel 34/35.

A. Yes, but a long time ago. In any case yours was a very pleasant surprise and gave me the pleasure o f going back to thinking about wooden furniture, because wood is a marvellous material. You chose a thing of mine made in the 1930s. I don’t remember the exact year, but I had it by 1936. I must have made it in 1934-35.

D. Per quale ragione avevi disegnato questo mobile, per un’esigenza estetica?

O. Why did you design this piece, for aesthetic reasons?

R. Serviva a me, questo mobile. Ho cercato di farlo secondo le mie idee funzionali e razionali. Chiamatele come volete, e l’ho ancora ed è quello che avete sotto le mani e sotto il naso.

A. It was for my own use, this piece, I tried to make it according to my functional and rational ideas, call them as you will, and I still have it, and it’s what you have under your hands and under your nose.

D. Che rapporto hai con la forma del tuo lavoro trasposta in un ambito diverso?

Q. What relationship do you have with the form o f your work transposed to a different sphere? Does this writing-table resemble your paintings, that is to say your aesthetic experiences in the field of pure research?

A. To me it does. It reflects the ideas of painting that I have, and that I had in the 1930s; it is in the same line.

D. A parte il disordine o l’ordine che è un fatto caratteriale, quale importanza ha l’arredamento del luogo dove vivi, in relazione al tuo lavoro? Ti interessa avere una casa studiata nei dettagli oppure è irrilevante?

R. A me interesserebbe avere la casa come è il mio lavoro.

D. Costruire un oggetto d’uso, è nostra opinione, è sempre stata opera di mediazione fra una teoria estetica e l’estetica della funzione, ma mentre fino all’inizio del secolo l’artigiano manifestava la sua creatività, per camuffare una funzione pratica, nell’epoca moderna esiste un’estetica della tecnologia, che è entrata a far parte del codice visivo del nostro tempo. Qual è la tua posizione a questo proposito, tenendo conto anche degli eccessi di reazione alla poetica del

Q. Do you identify yourself with the environment in which you work and live?

Is there syntony between you, your way of thinking and working and your way of living at home?

A. There is an identification with regard to the house where I live, even though I don’t always manage to get it just as I want it. I ’ve never managed to have a studio. I have a lot of stuff, the space is limited, etc.; there’s a bit of untidiness, which, however, I don't think there is in my work.

Q. Apart from the untidiness or tidiness that is a personal characteristic, what is the importance of the furnishing of the place in which you live? Are you interested in having it planned in every detail, or is that unimportant?

A. I would be interested in having a home that is like my work.

Q. The construction of a useful object, this is our opinion, has always been a work of mediation between an aesthetic theory and the aesthetics of function, but until the beginning of the present century craftsmen manifested their creativity in order to disguise a practical function.

In the modern age there is a technological aesthetic that has come to be part of the visual code of our time. What is your position in this regard, bearing in mind

R. L’idea del Razionalismo e del

Funzionalismo è che un oggetto pensato funzionalmente e razionalmente, è automaticamente bello.

D. Come giudichi la produzione

“barocca” e ridondante di semantiche prese a prestito, dell’ultimo decennio?

R. La giudico di basso livello.

D. Dalla produzione storica del mobile,

intendiamo dire quello nato neN’ambito del Neo-plasticismo, Costruttivismo e del Bauhaus, cosa ti sembra un dato acquisito e cosa ti sembra obsoleto, o da sfumare o decisamente superato. I canoni della razionalità sono ancora attuali?

R. Sono assolutamente attuali; quando vedo certi mobili che mi interessano, che sono di alta qualità dal punto di vista estetico, automaticamente scopro che arrivano da quelle avanguardie.

D. Questo fenomeno di un’avanguardia, che rimane tale, almeno per noi che la amiamo, per oltre 80 anni, ha secondo te un precedente storico, oppure è da considerarsi un fenomeno tipico della nostra epoca?

R. Penso che sia un fenomeno tipicamente moderno; abbiamo avuto dei fenomeni abbastanza simili anche prima, però non hanno avuto questa durata, questa costanza.

D. Questo è il secolo, secondo te, della

crisi della creatività, visto che viviamo ancora di rendita di quello che hanno inventato i nostri bisnonni?

R. Sì è un secolo un po’ in crisi.

Guardiamo l’architettura italiana: sono sempre stato in polemica con molti amici architetti, amici carissimi degli anni ’30.

Facevano, in quegli anni, delle piccole architetture, molte belle, piccole case, delle cose di piccola architettura, sapevano fare. Quello che è curioso, e vorrei che qualcuno ne trovasse la spiegazione, che io non ho trovato, è il fatto che dopo la guerra, tutti i giovani che seguivano le idee di Pagano e di Persico sono crollati, non hanno saputo portare avanti quello che si faceva prima della guerra. Mi domando, era Pagano che faceva o erano loro? lo non sono stato capace di rispondere.

also the excesses of reaction to the poetics of functionalism that have led to Post­ modernism?

A. The idea of Rationalism and Functionalism is that an object which is rationally and functionally designed is automatically beautiful.

O. What is your opinion of the “baroque” production redundant with borrowed semantics of this last decade?

A. It is rather low.

Q. With regard to the historic production of furniture, in the sense of the production deriving from Neo-plasticism, Constructivism and the Bauhaus, which aspects seem to you still valid and which obsolete, or to be toned down, or clearly our of date ? Are the canons of rationalism still valid?

A. They are absolutely valid. When I see certain articles of furniture that interest me, that are of high quality from the aesthetic point of view, I automatically discover that they derive from those avant-gardes.

Q. This phenomenon of an avant-garde which remains that, at least for us who love it, for over 80 years, do you thing it has a historical precedent or is it to be considered a phenomenon typical of our time?

A. I think it is a typically modern phenomenon. There were fairly similar phenomena even before but they did not last so long or have the same constancy.

Q. Is this, according to you, the century of the crisis of creativity, seeing that we are still living on the proceeds of what our great-grandfathers invented?

A. Yes, it is a century which is in a bit of a crisis. Look at Italian architecture: I always argued with my many architect friends, dear friends of the 1930s. In those years they produced small architectures, very beautiful small houses, architecture on a small scale, and they were good at it. What is curious, and I hope someone finds the explanation that I haven’t found, is the fact that after the war, all the young architects that followed the ideas of Pagano and Persico failed; they weren’t able to carry on what was done before the war. And I ask myself, was it Pagano who did it or was it them?; and I haven’t been able to answer.

Q. Perhaps in out time the creativity of architecture is entrusted to great individuals but does not correspond to the collective creativity, which is very disintegrated.

A. That is true. These great masters

Ad un certo punto discuto con Figini e gli dico: - tu prima della guerra hai fatto una casa a Milano che è molto bella, e dopo hai fatto l’Hotel Presldent, che è ignobile come architettura, spiegami il perché -. Lui ha tergiversato e poi abbiamo bisticciato, lui sosteneva di aver sempre amato l'arte astratta, lo dicevo che non l’aveva mai utilizzata in nessuna delle sue opere.

D. Ti punzecchiamo su questi punti

perché sappiamo che da te possiamo avere particolari che ci interessano. Che rapporto vedi fra le necessità primarie deH’uomo e quanto si va producendo oggi nel mondo dell’arredamento? Perché il produttore dice, facciamo questo perché il pubblico lo vuole, attribuendogli forse superficialmente un “pregiudizio”. Non dovremmo educare la gente a vivere In modo diverso?

R. Dovrebbe essere fin dalla scuola; i

ragazzi dovrebbero essere abituati a vivere l'estetica come fatto primario, ma questo non accade. Oppure è iniziativa del singolo, che si Impegna a titolo personale.

D. Il gusto e l’educazione del gusto, è più

in crisi oggi che non nel passato, non ci sono più codici certi, il tutto rimane In uno stato di latenza.

R. Oggi è molto in crisi.

D. L’educazione visiva non può essere demandata soltanto alla scuola, che ha già difficoltà ad insegnare la grammatica.

R. E se il familiare è sbagliato, i figli crescono sbagliati.

D. Ma per fortuna la creatività è anche singola e sorge inaspettata in ogni ambito culturale. Ma, parlando d’altro, qual è il tuo rapporto con i materiali della costruzione? Per questa scrivania hai considerato ogni dettaglio come parte

A. No, I haven’t. But I don’t know, perhaps these arguments are a way of thinking of mine which is mistaken. At a certain point I was talking to Figini and I said: before the war you built a very beautiful house in Milan and after the war you built the Hotel President, which, as architecture, is ignoble, explain to me why. 0. We are baiting you on these points because we know that you can give us details that interest us. What relationship do you see between the primary needs of man and what is being produced today in the world of furniture? Why does the producer say, let's make this because the public wants it, attributing to the public, perhaps superficially, a “prejudice”?

Should we not educate people to live in a different way?

A. It should begin in the schools; children should be accustomed to experience aesthetics as a primary fact; but this doesn't happen, if not at the level of the initiative and commitment of an individual.

Q. Taste and the education of taste are in a greater crisis today than in the past.

There are no definite codes. Everything remains in a state of latency.

A. The present day is very much in a crisis.

O. Visual education cannot be delegated only to schools, which already have enough difficulty teaching grammar.

Certain things should be transmitted at the level of the family.

A. And if the family is wrong, the children grow up wrong.

Q. But fortunately creativity is also single and arises unexpectedly in every cultural environment. But, to change the subject, what is your relationship with construction materials? In the case of this writing-table, did you consider every detail as an integrating part of your creativity or does technique interest you less than form?

A. No, no, it interests me a lot, because the constructional technique serves to

“Composizione” è già una negazione di contenuto. “Senza titolo” è ancora più radicale. Se non sbaglio già le tue prime opere erano intitolate “Composizione”.

R. Sì, per lo più era “Composizione”.

A qualcuna davo il titolo, ma un titolo molto strano, ma questo era anche prima degli anni '30, attorno agli anni '20.

D. "Senza titolo” invece?

R. "Senza titolo” è venuto negli anni '30.

D. Ma qual è la ragione del “Senza titolo”?

R. Non lo so, io non l’ho mai adoperato, io

ho adoperato e adopero sempre o “Composizione” o “Costruzione”, seguito da un numero.

D. Allora la scrivania come la intitoliamo?

R. Non lo so, inventatelo voi.

D. Come è stato questo tuo contatto con

una grande industria come la Tecno?

R. Una cosa bellissima, una grossa sorpresa. Ero abituato con le altre industrie che conoscevo, e non facevano mobili, ma un’altra cosa è il trovare un’industria che ha come regola la qualità estetica di quello che produce; è stata un’esperienza eccezionale.

D. Tu avevi seguito il lavoro fatto da

Borsani negli anni 50/60 con gli artisti del gruppo milanese?

R. Certo, l’avevo seguito bene, avevo

fatto anche dei disegni per un opuscolo di propaganda e anche un disegno di mobile. Non so che fine hanno fatto.

D. Forse è il caso di riguardare in fabbrica

in archivio. Come era in quegli anni il tuo contatto con l’architetto Borsani? In che cosa hai notato una differenza fra il modo di lavorare con gli artisti della allora Borsani, e la Tecno di oggi?

R. Vi dirò francamente che mi pare che la Tecno oggi sia molto più vicina agli artisti della allora Borsani.

Q. A last question. What shall we call this writing-table of yours? And in this regard, we should like to ask you, because you were there, if you know when the practice started of giving a work of art the title of “Without title”, or simply “Composition”.

“Composition” is already a negation of content, “Without title” is even more radical. If I ’m not mistaken even your first works were titled “Composition”.

A. Yes, it was mostly “Composition”. To some I gave another title, but a very strange title. But that was even before the 1930s, around 1920.

Q. "And “Without title”?

A. "Without title" came in the 1930s.

Q. But what is the reason for “Without title”?

A. I don't know, I ’ve never used it. I have always adopted and still adopt either “Composition” or “Construction”, followed by a number.

Q. Well, what shall we call the writingtable?

A. I don’t know. You decide.

O. What impression did your contact with a large industrial concern like Tecno make on you?

A. Marvellous, and a great surprise. I was used to the other industries I knew, and they didn’t make furniture, but it was something else to find an industry in which the aesthetic quality of its production is of supreme importance. It was an exceptional experience.

Q. Were you familiar with the work done

by Borsani with the artists of the Milanese group in the 1950s and 1960s?

A. Yes, very familiar. I did some drawings for a publicity booklet. I also designed an article of furniture. I don’t know what happened to them.

Q. Perhaps one should consult the company files. What sort of contact did you have with the architect Borsani in that period? What difference have you noticed between the Borsani way of working with artists then and the Tecno way today?

A. I ’l l tell you frankly that it seems to me that Tecno today is much closer to the artists than Borsani was.

LUIGI VERONESI Nasce a Milano nel 1908.

Maestro dell'astrattismo storico italiano, ha giocato con l’alfabeto visivo astratto da libero pensatore. Il suo linguaggio si è mantenuto riconoscibile sia nelle espressioni pittoriche, sia in quelle grafiche, fotografiche o teatrali. Forme semplificate con le quali ha saputo creare panorami visivi di pura astrazione. Del 1927 sono i suoi primi fotogrammi astratti. Fortemente interessato alla filosofia e alla matematica, si lega di amicizia con il mondo del Costruttivismo internazionale.

Nel 1934 entra a far parte del gruppo “Abstraction Creation”, progetta disegni per tessuti e inizia ad occuparsi di teatro. Tra i primi bozzetti quelli per “Le Rossignol” di Strawinski. Nel 1935 partecipa alla prima mostra di arte astratta a Torino ed espone, insieme a Josef Albers, alla Galleria II Milione di Milano. Sempre in quegli anni svolge attività di grafico collaborando con le riviste Casabella e Domus. Tra II ’30 ed il '40 realizza il “Film 1” con fotogrammi astratti, quasi interamente dipinti sulla pellicola.

Nel 1949 aderisce al “Movimento Arte Concreta” (MAC). È presente nelle principali mostre italiane ed internazionali, tra cui la Biennale di Venezia e quella di San Paolo in Brasile.

Ha svolto attività didattica insegnando negli anni '50 all'llmanitaria di Milano, a Venezia negli anni '60, e poi di nuovo a Milano, all’Accademia di Brera negli anni 70, e successivamente alla Nuova Accademia. Nel 1983 gli è stato conferito il Premio dei Lincei.

Vive e lavora a Milano.

La Collezione ABV propone, di Luigi Veronesi, lo scrittoio “Costruzione” realizzato per il proprio studio nel 1935.

Luigi Veronesi was born in Milan in 1908.

A major representative of the first period of Italian abstract art, he played with the abstract visual alphabet in the way of a free-thinker, his language, whether in painting, graphic work, photography or in the theatre, remaining always recognizable: simplified forms with which he was able to create purely abstract visual panoramas. In 1927 he produced his first abstract photograms. Deeply interested in mathematics and philosophy, he found congenial friendships in the world of international Constructivism.

In 1934 he became a member of the “Abstraction-Creation” group.

He designed fabrics and began to occupy himself with the theatre.

His first designs were for Stravinski's “Le rossignol”. In 1935 he took part in the first exhibition of abstract art in Turin and exhibited, with Josef Albers, at the II Milione Gallery in Milan. In the same period he collaborated with the magazines Casabella and Domus in the field of graphics. In the late 1930s and early 1940s he made “Film 1” consisting of photograms almost entirely painted on the film. In 1949 he joined the Movimento Arte Concreta (MAC). He has taken part in the main Italian and international collective exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and the San Paolo Biennale.

He taught at the Umanitaria in Milan in the 1950s, in the 1960s in Venice, then, in the 1970s, in Milan again, at the Accademia di Brera and, subsequently, at the Nuova Accademia. In 1983 he was awarded the Premio dei Lincei.

He lives and works in Milan.

Luigi Veronesi is represented in the Collezione ABV by the replica of the writing-desk made for his studio in 1935 and named, “Costruzione”.
