To the educator …

Effective pre-reading skills are absolutely essential in the language development of all readers. In order for a child to become a proficient reader, he/she must first become familiar with the names and sounds of the letters in the alphabet. It is important that a child learn to ‘hear’ the initial sound of the words he/ she is reading and writing, and recognise those sounds in their print form.

Each alphabet page in this book offers an activity to promote the development of initial sound recognition and encourages the child to identify its related letter of the alphabet. This deals effectively with the first stage in the reading process. It is recommended that the name and sound of each letter are given to the child at the beginning of each alphabet page, e.g. “This letter is b (bee) that sounds like ‘b’.

There are a number of other educational aspects addressed in this book, they are: number recognition and counting 1 to 20; colour and shape recognition; and matching and comparison skills.

This book is a valuable resource to all educators of early readers. It offers motivational activities and relevant attractive pictures with precise instructions at the child’s development level. It aims to provide educators with an up-to-date, comprehensive set of activity pages that are developmentally sequential, highly educational and motivational.
