Tanglin's AI Principles

AI Principles

INTRODUCTION

Since its inception, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has taken the world by storm. By its nature, AI is all-encompassing and seems to be defined by a relentless need to evolve and reinvent itself. This leads to more applications, ideas, platforms, and uses of such a powerful tool.

At Tanglin, we want our community to learn about the power of AI. Rather than getting lost in the myriad of tools, we want to focus on how to use it responsibly and healthily without losing our core purpose as an educational institution.

Last year, we agreed on a set of principles for how our teaching and learning community at Tanglin would use AI appropriately. These principles link to our school values of Respect, Responsibility, and Purpose, which guide us in everything we do at school.

We believe that rooting our guidance in our core values in this way will allow students and staff to navigate the AI landscape with confidence, regardless of how AI develops in the coming months and years.

AI PRINCIPLES

Principle 1: Respect (Honesty & Integrity)

We must ensure that our work represents our voice and respects other people’s work (AI engines pull other people’s ideas together). If we have sought help from AI, we must acknowledge it.

Considerations

For students:

Is the content I have submitted all my work expressed in my own words?

Have I followed the Academic Integrity Policy?

If I have used AI, have I been transparent and referenced it as a source?

Guidelines (for all users)

For teachers:

Do I know how to identify/challenge inappropriate AI use?

Do I know where to find support?

How do I model the appropriate use of AI?

Use AI as a tool for support, guidance, or check, but always ensure you are the main contributor to the task. Currently, AI is more effective in providing initial ideas than in delivering final solutions. The end result should be your own work and expressed in your own words.

AI PRINCIPLES

Principle 2: Responsibility (Due Diligence & Critical Thinking)

We must evaluate and question AI-created content, check it for bias and inaccuracies and be transparent about its use. We must not create content using AI that contains personal information.

Considerations

For students:

Have I fact-checked the AIgenerated content with another source?

For teachers:

Is the AI-created content representative of what I want to say?

Is it specific and nuanced enough?

Guidelines

(for all users)

For all:

Is AI’s output accurate?

Is it biased?

Have I ensured I haven’t shared any personal data?

When using AI, always check its output for the issues above. We are ultimately responsible for our own work.

AI PRINCIPLES

Principle 3: Purpose (Why)

To obtain the learning benefits of the task and develop our understanding of the subject, we must act with integrity in accordance with its purpose.

Considerations

For students:

What is the learning objective of the task?

Is using AI stopping learning from taking place?

Is it enhancing the learning ?

For teachers:

Is the AI output:

Appropriate for my students?

Appropriate for where their learning is right now?

Providing enough detail?

Facilitating learning?

With a learning purpose made clear to students?

Guidelines (for all users)

Everything we do in school is about learning. Consider the task's learning purpose and whether using AI will enhance that learning.
