Nau mai haere mai i runga i te reo karanga o WOMAD. We extend a warm welcome to you all. He puna wai, he tpuna kai, he puna toi, he puna ora, ita ita! Food and water is sustenance for my body, Art is sustenance for my wellbeing, For without it I would die! Nestled under the watchful gaze of majestic maunga Taranaki, the stunning Brooklands Park and the TSB Bowl of Brooklands are a potent backdrop for the 14th edition of WOMAD in Taranaki. It is our mission to present diverse, colourful performances to our audiences and to bring a wide range of voices to our festival each year. Artists are often on the front lines of building cultural bridges and raising awareness on a broad range of global issues. We have been proudly pushing the musical boundaries in Aotearoa since 2003, keeping borders and cultural understanding fluid through the vehicle of music. Many of the artists that you will see have been baptized into the world of music at a young age, with strong musical lineage flowing in their veins. Others have started out on the streets busking to make a living before rising to the stages and airwaves of the world. This weekend you can experience a melting pot of infectious sounds from Indian classical tradition, afrobeat, ska, jazz, folk from the Middle East, Quebec and Scandinavia to roots reggae, desert blues and good old Kiwi music. WOMAD is an eclectic and energetic fusion of rhythms and harmonies not to be missed. This year our line-up boasts a host of acclaimed artists both international and local. Artists such as Anoushka Shankar, Kamasi Washington, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Thievery Corporation and ground-breaking project Havana Meets Kingston, who unite the unique

sound of both Jamaican and Cuban music. The New Zealand line up sizzles, with headliner Aldous Harding, chart-topping legends Dragon, multi-award winning Maisey Rika & Friends and local boys The Slacks. Alongside this wonderful music we strive to bring you art and stories in different ways. The World of Words programme brims with thought-provoking speakers, authors, storytellers who encourage the art of conversation. It includes enigmatic poets David Merritt and Penny Ashton, storyteller Apirana Taylor, international best-selling author crime writer Paul Cleave, quintessential Kiwi-Marlborough Man Allan Scott, one of Aotearoa’s most prominent Māori autonomy advocates, Tame Iti, and other great talents. ‘Kei Tua O te Arai’ - Beyond the Veil is a site installation work commissioned especially for WOMAD and sees renowned projectionist Tim Gruchy and musicians and composers Horomona Horo and Jeremy Mayall combine their talents and imagination. It is a spellbinding centrepiece of ethereal and ever-changing digital artwork, set to a thrilling and unique soundscape. A Curious Game is an interactive site performance piece where children and adults become chess pieces on an oversized chess board, led by a bossy queen, an absurd knight, and a humorous pawn who use cue cards to conduct the game. This is for all ages, but perfect for kids! Rounding off what to look for on site, check out our new craft beer offering the Garden of Brews and our revamped Te Paepae, where you can check out a 360 degree virtual powhiri and interact with Tangata Whenua. Charles’ pick: Havana Meets Kingston

We love partnering with an event that allows friends and family to come together to experience a world-class festival in the heart of Taranaki. Expect to be spellbound by the collaborative art installation Kei Tua o te Arai – Beyond the Veil from New Zealand artists Tim Gruchy, Horomona Horo and Jeremy Mayall. This ever-changing digital artwork brings to life a tree at the centre of WOMAD, which really showcases the unique venue that is the TSB Bowl of Brooklands and its botanic surrounds.

Todd Energy is again proud to be a partner of WOMAD New Zealand. Being the fourteenth staging of the event, our small city of New Plymouth continues to thrive Joanna’s pick: and build a reputation as a cultural Spooky Men’s hub of activity. WOMAD brings an Chorale annual kaleidoscope of music, dance and culinary delights to our wider New Zealand community. I would like to welcome all festival attendees, in particular those who have travelled from outside the region and internationally. I would also like to acknowledge the work of the Taranaki Arts Festival Trust for continuing to deliver the opportunities that WOMAD creates, as well as the other local supporters and sponsors who make this event possible.

We are delighted to once again be able to take WOMAD to our local communities through our annual Todd Energy WOMAD Community Programme. This year local school children will be taking part in workshops with WOMAD artists Nano Stern (Chile) and the Spooky Men’s Chorale (Australia). These workshops culminate in a special community performance, showcasing the talent of our local children as well as allowing local community members the opportunity to connect with the WOMAD experience close to home.

THE WOMAD STORY WOMAD is an internationally acclaimed and award-winning festival, which brings together artists from all over the globe. As one of the longest running and best established cultural festival on the planet, WOMAD celebrates the world’s many forms of music, arts and dance to educate, inform and enjoy. Since the first festival in the UK in 1982, WOMAD has held more than 250 festivals, creating events in 27 countries and islands all over the world, including: Abu Dhabi, Australia, Austria, Canada, Chile, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Fuerteventura, Germany, Greece, Gran Canarias, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, Sardinia, Sicily, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, UK and the USA. The family-oriented and diverse festival is the brainchild of renowned artist and humanitarian Peter Gabriel, who says it was pure enthusiasm for music from around the world that led to the creation of WOMAD nearly 40 years ago. “The festivals have always been wonderful and unique occasions and have succeeded in introducing an international audience to many talented artists,” Peter says.

ALLAN SCOTT WINE TASTING Interviewed by Abbie Jury. As part of the World of Words programme, New Zealand winemaker Allan Scott joins us as at WOMAD 2018 for an intimate session that is part interview and part wine tasting. Sample a selection of wines from Allan’s Generations series while hearing about the wine he’s made and the stories that surround the industry he’s grown to love. Each sample will be paired with hors d’oeuvres, designed to complement the elegant flavours of each wine.

TAI CHI FOR CAMPERS We’re bringing calm and serenity to the campsite with a morning Tai Chi session. A form of Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits, it is said that practising Tai Chi helps the body return to a balanced, relaxed and healthy state and returns the mind to stillness, clarity and wisdom.

Start Saturday with a cumbian themed bang! Join Team Azucar Dance for a Zumba dance session, the Latin inspired dance fitness classes that have taken over the globe. This session will be sure to warm you up and get you in the WOMAD spirit! Team Azucar are holding a Zumba workshop on the Sunday of WOMAD, join them in Te Paepae to learn the basics.

Adrian Sherwood is a pioneer of bass-dominant, dub-flavoured dance tunes who has inspired and shaped reggae and contemporary electronic music through his label/collective, On U Sound. Since the early ‘80s he has thrown his heart, soul and intelligence into his work, collaborating with big names from outside the dub community as well as shaping his own distinctive sound.

Aldous Harding does more than sing. She shape-shifts through a variety of roles: chanteuse, folk singer and balladeer - all executed with her twisted touch of humour and quiet horror. Her powerful work recently saw her become a finalist in the prestigious Silver Scroll Awards, and scoop nominations in four categories of the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.

ANOUSHKA SHANKAR (INDIA/UK) Deeply rooted in the Indian classical tradition and gifted with her father’s ability with the sitar, Anoushka Shankar’s music is filled with innovation and exploration. She is also an impassioned supporter of women’s rights and social justice, which is reflected in her recent collaborations.

BIXIGA 70 (BRAZIL) Bixiga 70 takes afrobeat to dizzying heights with their progressive approach; adding elements of funk, traditional South American styles, electronics and a touch of psychedelia. BLICK BASSY (CAMEROON/FRANCE)

Blick Bassy is a traveller whose adventures are reflected in his eclectic and intriguing compositions, many of which feature the unusual combination of banjo and trumpet. A unique voice in African music, he cites American blues musician Skip James as the influence for his last album, Ako. It’s an inspiring blend of blues, bossa nova, folk and the sounds of New Orleans.

For nearly 20 years the ensemble Constantinople have explored musical diversity through the lens of ‘East meets West’, an ever changing melting pot, much like the city after which they are named. Their inspiration for their Jardins Migrateurs performance is a poetic meeting between strings and voice, with griot Ablaye Cissoko adding kora, in a celebration of life and nature.

DAYMÉ AROCENA (CUBA) Singer, composer, arranger and bandleader, Daymé Arocena was recently dubbed by The Guardian as “Cuba’s finest vocalist”. The young Afro-Cuban artist, mentored by Gilles Peterson and winner of the prestigious Juno Award in 2015, has a rich understanding of her heritage but is also constantly finding new musical inspiration and connection through her love of soul and jazz.

DRAGON (NEW ZEALAND/AUSTRALIA) The chart-topping and legendary band Dragon have produced a stack of rock anthems that everyone knows the words to. Formed in New Zealand in 1972, Dragon’s hit songs include April Sun in Cuba, Are You Old Enough, Young Years, and Rain. The award-winning band was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2008, they have played sold-out shows throughout the globe, and they continue to tour extensively.

GHADA SHBEIR (LEBANON) With a deep passion for classical Arabic music since she was a child, Ghada Shbeir has devoted her life to exploring and adapting ancient texts and inspirational poetry through her beguiling vocals. Her repertoire moves between Middle Eastern folk, Arabo-Andalusian songs and Syriac ancient Maronite chants, shedding new light on powerful and traditional music.

HAVANA MEETS KINGSTON (CUBA/JAMAICA) Australian producer Mista Savona has created a sound clash with a difference, bringing roots reggae, dub and dancehall together with son, salsa, rumba to create Havana Meets Kingston. The 14-piece band boasts the heavyweight rhythm section of Sly and Robbie and members of Buena Vista Social Club, Los Van Van, Chucho Valdes and Inna de Yard.

JOJO ABOT (GHANA) Jojo Abot creates music, film, photography, literature and performance art. A true global fusionist in both sound and artistic expression, she is poised to take the world by storm with her hypnotic and empowering blend of electronica, afrobeat, jazz, neo-soul, house and reggae.

Beatbox sensation, Tom Thum – best known for the most watched TEDx talk of all time: Beatbox Brilliance – joins forces with bohemian singer-songwriter Jamie MacDowell to create original, genre-defying music that is “redefining musical parameters”. Armed only with a guitar and a versatile voice box, this duo defies expectations.

KAMASI WASHINGTON (USA) Kamasi Washington is a jazz superstar who is taking the music world by storm. LE VENT DU NORD (CANADA) Quebec is renowned for its eclectic, progressive folk ensembles and Le Vent du Nord have been a driving force in the scene for the past 15 years. Combining hurdy-gurdy, accordion, bouzouki, guitar and fiddle with foot-stomping, vibrant harmonies and large doses of humour, it’s impossible to resist their joie de vivre.

MY BUBBA (SWEDEN/ICELAND) Scandinavian folk duo My Bubba make soft, soulful music that is as playful as it is powerful. Their delicate and disarming creations form a collection of intimate stories, often described as a beguiling and contemporary take on folk music.

NANO STERN (CHILE) Born into a family of musicians and activists, it comes as no surprise that Nano Stern began his musical life in the underground punk rock scene and followed it up with classical and jazz training. With his deep respect for Chilean poetry and music traditions evident in every passionate show, Nano Stern instils hope in those who are hungry for social justice.

NOURA MINT SEYMALI (MAURITANIA) Noura Mint Seymali’s scorching Afro-funk desert blues have seen her rise to become a leading light of African music. Having performed regularly with her stepmother, the late, great singer Dimi Mint Abba, her goal now is to modernise the music of Mauritania. Prepare to be entranced by a powerful voice and some truly psychedelic guitar lines.

PAT THOMAS & KWASHIBU AREA BAND (GHANA)

One of Ghana’s all-time greatest vocalists, Pat Thomas was a mainstay of the ‘70s and ‘80s vibrant Highlife music scene. After a stellar 50 years, performing with the likes of Ebo Taylor and Tony Allen, his funk-driven self-titled 2015 album put him back on the map and proved that he’s still at the top of his game.

RAHIM ALHAJ TRIO (IRAQ/USA) Rahim AlHaj creates intricate compositions that reference the pain of exile and the hope of new beginnings. One of the world’s great oud players, he started playing at the age of nine and was soon recognised as having a remarkable talent. He brings his trio featuring Iranian santour and Arabic percussion that combine traditional Iraqi maqams with contemporary influences.

THE SLACKS (NEW ZEALAND/AOTEAROA) The Slacks is a four-piece formed by brothers Scott and Mark Armstrong. The sound of the band has been described as folk-rock slapped about the face by country and the blues with a dusting of Irish-ska. Their recent release, Big Aroha, was filmed in a local 4-Square and struck a chord with ex-pat Kiwis and schools all over Aotearoa.

VICTORIA HANNA (ISRAEL) Victoria Hanna, raised in an ultra-orthodox household in Jerusalem, found a way to express herself and overcome her stutter when she discovered secular music, and the result is most unexpected. A singer who performs Aramaic hip hop and wild, hypnotic and rhythmic raps on ancient Hebrew texts, Hanna is an experimentalist who is both unpredictable and bewitching.

TINARIWEN (MALI) Grammy Award winning Tuareg guitar masters, Tinariwen play scorching desert blues. Having met in France while working on the Silk Road project with renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, this trio of musicians from three wildly different cultures formed Violons Barbares in search of new sounds. Using the Mongolian violin (the Morin Khur), the Bulgarian Gadulka and percussion, it’s an irresistible fusion of energetic rhythms and harmonies.

SEATING FOR SENIORS Our festival is one that appeals to all ages. The festival caters to the young, the young TSB at heart, and everyone in between. To make the festival experience more enjoyable and accessible, TSB provide elevated seating for over 65 seniors and wheelchair platforms at the three main stages – the TSB Bowl stage, the Todd Energy Brooklands stage and the Gables Stage. These mini grandstands are supervised by helpful TSB staff. They volunteer their weekend to make sure things run smoothly, please follow their instructions so everyone has an enjoyable and safe time.

INSTALLATIONS / SITE ARTISTS FLAGS BY ANGUS WATT

The flags that flutter above WOMAD New Zealand have become an iconic part of the festival. Award-winning UK visual artist Angus Watt, who designs and creates the flags, has work featured at WOMAD festivals around the world. “Basically, no two flags are the same,” Angus says. The elegant creations are made of Japanese silk and each one helps to transform open spaces into spectacular sights. “The flags are really just great big abstract paintings, painted in the sky, using the wind and the sun. “I have to think about the aerodynamics of the flags and how they are going to fly.” Angus says one of the key elements of the large-scale artworks is the array of colours, from ethereal to daring.

“The great thing about this fabric is that there are so many in-between colours that don’t have any names. “The flags get worn and they have a lot of sun – the colours change and I re-use fabrics and reintroduce them with other colours, so you have more control over the level of palette.” Angus, who comes from a highly artistic family, had the vision for the sea of flags while trucking across South Africa in the early 90s, three years after art school. INSTALLATIONS / SITE ARTISTS KEI TUA O TE ARAI -BEYOND THE VEIL Renowned projection artist Tim Gruchy teams up with musicians and composers Horomona Horo and Jeremy Mayall to create an ethereal and ever-changing digital artwork, set to a thrilling and unique soundscape. This delightful work brings to life a tree at the centre of the WOMAD site, creating the perfect showcase of these three artistic minds.

TIM GRUCHY Welsh-born New Zealand-based artist Tim Gruchy has spent more than 30 years exploring interactive multimedia through installation, music and performance. He has exhibited multimedia works, photography, video, music and performance in Africa, Australia, New Zealand, China, Taiwan, Holland, Belgium, UK, USA, Japan, France and Thailand.

For this project Tim draws his inspiration from Taranaki’s narrative and Aotearoa’s landscape, while Horomona and Jeremy’s soundscape explores the exquisite sounds of traditional instruments used by Ma-ori, known as taonga puoro, paired with otherworldly electronic textures.

Dr Jeremy Mayall is a composer, producer, performer and multi-sensory artist. He works in music, sound art and multimedia formats with a focus on exploring sound, time, space, the senses and human experience.

WOMAD’s wordsmiths bring their hypnotic rhymes to life in a battle to find the best poet at the festival!

Penny Ashton is New Zealand’s own global comedienne who has been making a splash on the world stage since 2002. She has performed more than 600 solo shows and has sold out from Edinburgh to Adelaide to Edmonton. She has represented both New Zealand in The World Cup of Theatresports in Germany, and Australasia in a Performance Poetry Slam Tournament Tour of the UK.

Expect a celebration of beats, verse, quips and rhythms in this symphony of spoken word. As a part of the World of Words programme, Poetry Slam will delight with downright epic performers in the spotlight. WOMAD audience members play an important role in the judges’ scoring - so get along and cheer on this poetic marathon.

The WOMAD campsite accommodates thousands of people! To make your stay easy, read up on our camping FAQs for the general, accessible, family and motorhome camp areas.

There is security on site at all times, however, we ask you to be vigilant and please ensure that valuables are locked in your vehicle at all times. WOMAD takes no responsibility for any loss or damage to personal property.

If you wish to use your car during your stay it is advisable to park in one of the designated car parks adjacent to the TSB Stadium.

CAMP INFORMATION OFFICE The camp information office is location in the TSB Stadium and is open during festival hours.

CELLPHONE CHARGING There are power sockets available in the TSB Stadium foyer. Phones left there remain the owner’s responsibility.

WASH-UP FACILITIES Wash-up containers are located in the Family Camping and General Camping areas near the temporary toilets/showers. Boiling water, for baby’s bottles etc., may be obtained at the TSB Stadium kitchen.

LEAVING THE CAMPSITE We want the Monday morning mass exodus to run as smoothly as possible! For this reason we’ve extended the pack out time to 10.30am so our campers don’t have to leave in a hurry.

WATER ACCESS There are taps situated throughout the General Camping and at the temporary toilets/ showers and outside the TSB Stadium.

Please note there will be no right turn from gates A or B until 10am on Monday morning.

HOW TO BORROW A HUMAN BOOK

The Living Library contains ‘Living Books’ (people on loan), who are taken out by the Reader (person borrowing the Book) for 30 minutes to explore the Book’s topic.

You’ll find the Living Library in the Kunming Garden - head on over to the tent next to the Pagoda to check in. Review the Book titles on offer, chat to the librarians about which Book interests you, and make a time to borrow the Book (for free) for 30 minutes.

This enables Books to tell their stories and their Reader to break stereotypes by challenging prejudices in a positive and often humorous manner. The library is designed to promote dialogue, reduce discrimination, encourage understanding and widen views on life, in a space set up for interaction through one-on-one conversation. The Living Library breaks down barriers so that communities can build tolerance and understanding of one another, even if they don’t agree with each other’s chosen way of life.

Te Paepae is the cultural heartbeat, the meeting house of WOMAD. It is a place to come and experience Ma-ori art and culture, and to meet some of the local people. With the support of Tui Ora, Te Wa-nanga o Aotearoa and Te Puni Ko-kiri, Te Paepae is bursting at the seams with new activities and experiences for the whole WOMAD wha-nau! As well as being home to our artist workshops Te Paepae highlights include a reality cultural experience with the 360 degree virtual Po-whiri, temporary stencilled Ta- Moko tattoos, chat sessions with local Kauma-tua (elders), glow poi sessions, weaving classes, mirimiri (massage) sessions and even a new lounge for our WOMAD youth to chillax in! Got a question on Ma-ori tikanga or Te Reo? Come and chat with local kauma-tua; hear them talk and learn something new in these relaxed sessions, held in the Manaaki Lounge. All ages welcome.

Walk with us and experience a po-whiri (traditional welcome) as if you were there on the marae. Hear the call of the karanga, listen to the whaiko-rero (speeches) and waiata (songs). This 360 degree virtual po-whiri is a cultural experience like no other!

Spot the fairy folk in Tui Ora tees. They will be roving the site with their wings and wisdom, watching out for young WOMAD wha-nau. Ask them for help if you are a young person stuck in trouble. No problem too big or too small for these youth-friendly guardian angels.

WEAVING Help us weave a WOMAD Tukutuku Pou! Made up of 9 individual panels that together will form a 3 sided rotating triangle, the design will represent the many cultures that WOMAD bring together. Workshops are free but spaces are limited so arrive early to secure a spot. Looking for something to entertain the kids? Bring them along to tamariki weaving hour where they can learn the basics and make their own putiputi (flower).

Make a unique cultural statement. Wear a moko (Ma-ori tattoo) for the day!

TE WAKA KOKIRI Visit Te Puni Ko- kiri at their mobile whare and learn about the aspirations of Aotearoa’s indigenous culture and the role the Ministry of Ma-ori Development (Te Puni Ko- kiri) plays in supporting their social prosperity. Success stories about how Iwi, hapu- and wha-nau are succeeding and realising their potential will be on show as well as family orientated activities to keep the tamariki busy! THE SPOOKY MEN’S CHORALE SINGING WORKSHOP

ARTISTS WORKSHOPS

Singing like a bloke – for all genders! Stephen Taberner and his trusted henchmen from the Spooky Men’s Chorale will take you on a gentle, whimsical, boof-ish journey through various major components of the spooky lexicon, including how to grunt with integrity, how to sob like a real man, and how to sounds like a choir of thousands. It will be hugely enjoyable, deeply redemptive, quite loud, and utterly pointless. This session will be fun for all, especially those who haven’t sung for a long time.

Maisey Rika shares her journey, transitioning from a traditional kapa haka performer to a contemporary Ma-ori singer-songwriter. Horomona Horo, a master taonga puoro specialist will talk about the foundations of traditional Ma-ori instruments and the different materials used to make such articulate musical pieces. Seth Haapu is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and producer who will demonstrate techniques he uses to craft his sound. Joining them on stage will be Troy Kingi who has a strong kapa haka background but now is a full time artist and actor. They are fusing their different sound palettes for an experience not to be missed!

SINGING AND DANCING WORKSHOP Dancing and singing is an integral part of Cuban culture and this workshop will leave you feeling ready to visit Cuba! Join Daymé for some Cuban rhythms, roots and dancing! Learn the dance moves and lyrics to three simple, traditional Cuban songs in Spanish and Yoruba. Everyone is welcome to come and move their body in this workshop, the best way to feel Cuban!

LEMON BUCKET ORKESTRA Join Lemon Bucket Orkestra workshop for a behind-the-scenes-type look at how they create their uniquely lemon-bucket-ified tunes! They’ll show you how they layer a Russian prison ballad with a Ukrainian polyphonic solstice ritual on top of a south Serbian trubaci dance, and filter it through some American trap and Mexican mariachi to create a song called “Freedom”.

PAT THOMAS & KWASHIBU AREA BAND ARTIST IN CONVERSATION AND SINGING WORKSHOP

Join Pat for a double bill of storytelling and singing! Pat Thomas will share stories about the makings of his career and the history of the musical genre high life. Following his storytelling, you’re invited to a singing workshop where Pat will actively teach the crowd to sing parts of songs from the latest Pat Thomas & Kwashibu Area Band’s album, accompanied by percussionist Eric Owusu.

VIOLONS BARBARES Balkan melodies, galloping rhythms and majestic throat singing. From the steppe country of Mongolia Dandarvaanchig Enkhjargal will explain the overtone singing and present his amazing instrument, the Morin Khoor (Horse-Head Fiddle). Bulgarian Dimitar Gougov plays gadulka, an instrument with three melodic and 11 resonant strings! French drummer Fabien Guyot plays everything imaginable to create sound, from African tambourine to salad bowls, pots and seeds... Wonderfully interpreted, their energetic music takes us to vast far-off lands. World folk, Kazakh blues, electric rock. Wild!

BEATBOXING WORKSHOP It has been said many times that internationally acclaimed beatboxer, Tom Thum, appears to have not only a symphony orchestra but also a jazz band, DJ, 80s’ synth pop group, and collection of exotic world instruments all residing somewhere in his throat. In this workshop Tom explains the basics of beatboxing 101. He’ll arm you with the powers to annoy everyone you love with abrasive noises! Bring an open mind, an open mouth, and open ears.

VICTORIA HANNA Dubbed the ‘edgiest’ singer on Israeli airwaves, Victoria Hanna’s singing of the Hebrew alphabet has over 1 million views on YouTube. Raised in an Orthodox family in Jerusalem, Hanna draws from ancient Jewish texts for her creative inspiration. Her debut album consists entirely of ancient Hebrew texts she grew up with and is divided into the two worlds that she explores, voice and speech. In this session Victoria will speak about her creative process.

THE TRAVELLING TUATARAS KIDZONE

Welcome to Kidzone. Kids - let your creative spirit fly! As a safe and welcoming environment for families and children up to 12, Kidzone is the place where creativity, stories and entertainment abound. Kidzone has a magical, festival atmosphere and to top it all off its absolutely free! Children take centre stage in the WOMAD Kidzone with this year’s theme of Things With Wings. There will be a feast of creation celebrated in song, visual arts, movement, circus, story and performance, all shared through WOMAD Kidzone radio. Kids will develop their performance skills for the Kidzone Parade on Sunday evening.

WHAT’S ON OFFER MĀORI ARTS AND GAMES with KAI (Ki-o-Rahi Akotanga Iho)

KAI will offer an invigorating journey into traditional Ma-ori arts and nga taakaro (games) which reflect Ma-ori values and philosophies. Play koauaua (flute), weave gliders, kites and other treasures, and let them take flight during the peace dance. Hang out and share stories with them during the freestyle sessions.

TARANAKI COMMUNITY CIRCUS COLLECTIVE Come join the circus! Learn the skills and tricks of the circus trade, from aerial silks, juggling, and hooping to balancing and acrobatics. Leave the workshops with a set of juggling balls, fun skills up your sleeve, and a smile as wide as a circus ring. During freestyle sessions, hang out with the circus and practice your tricks.

THE UKULELE INSTITUTE Let your inner Rockstar out with Shane McAlister, who puts the fun back into ukulele. With his faithful puppet band on hand, Shane offers a fun environment to bring ukulele to the world of music and dance. Strum the uke, blow the kazoo, bash out percussion lines, and sing along to fun and easy songs. Each session will end with a performance which builds up to the Kidzone Parade on Sunday evening.

The Tuataras ignite the creative spark wherever they go, taking their inspiration from Ma-ori mythology and the natural world to produce extraordinary parade art to wear and dance with in the WOMAD Kidzone Parade. At the Tuataras craft village your children can expect a creative adventure into bucket drumming, crafting and painting parade art.

CAPOEIRA MANDINGA AOTEAROA Capoeira Angola is a cultural martial artform from Brazil. It is a playful game of wit and strategy mixed with acrobatics, percussion, and song. Join the Capoeira Mandinga Aotearoa crew for a workshop or watch the capoeira players in the roda (circle), accompanied by traditional Afro-Brazilian instruments and songs.

STORIES AND MAGIC MAGICWORKS Come and experience the wonder of magic in the Kidzone at WOMAD. Local magician Josh invites you to be entertained by amazing magic and quirky antics, in a show that is fun for the whole family!

MARTIN BAYNTON Best known for his Jane and The Dragon series, Martin Baynton is an internationally acclaimed writer and illustrator of children’s books. His latest picture book, Dragon Island, deals with the issue of confronting violence in a safe, child-centric way. Martin will be reading from his books here at WOMAD, but is also happy to talk to children, students and parents about their own writing.

THE TRAVELLING TUATARAS STORY-TIME All the way from Rotoehu with their rainbow- coloured suitcases full of storytelling magic, the Travelling Tuataras are legendary fun-makers and performers who have enchanted thousands of children (and the young at heart!) with their unique mixture of storytelling, song and general merry-making.

FACE PAINTING WITH THE MAGICAL MASQUERADE CREW A Kidzone favourite, our face painting team’s imagination explodes, transforming your children into creative creatures, fantasy fairies or menacing monsters. Be in early – there is always a queue!

THE KIDZONE PARADE The WOMAD Kidzone parade is back! Your kids will feature in a roaming cornucopia where they can show off their drumming skills, Things with Wings creations, new songs, and circus tricks, trailed by a flock of kites! The parade will assemble at the Gables stage at 5:15pm, and will begin marching at 6pm. The parade ends at 6:30pm. Adults must accompany children during the parade.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMME THE PURPOSE Through our partners Todd Energy, The TSB Community Trust and the New Plymouth District Council, our aim is to make WOMAD accessible through workshops, concerts and artist interactions with select communities. This year’s events included song and dance workshops, a cook-off competition for Taranaki secondary school children and a free pop-up concert in New Plymouth’s CBD.

TODD ENERGY COMMUNITY PROGRAMME Todd Energy is a long-term partner of WOMAD and through its valuable support, WOMAD is able to extend its activities beyond the festival into local communities. This year, Todd Energy brought Australian group the Spooky Men’s Chorale to Kaponga School where they held singing workshops with groups of students, and Chilean singer song-writer Nano Stern conducted workshops with schools in the Ngāti Rahiri area.

NEW PLYMOUTH DISTRICT COUNCIL COMMUNITY PROGRAMME New Plymouth District Council’s community programme provided an opportunity for the public to experience a free taste of WOMAD prior to the event and for festival artists to get involved at a community level. The free pop-up concert took place at the Puke Ariki landing the Thursday before WOMAD and included festival artists Azucar Zumbar (NZ), A Curious Game (Australia), Nano Stern (Chile) & Spooky Men’s Chorale (Australia).

TSB COMMUNITY TRUST COOK-OFF Each year teams of students from Taranaki secondary schools take part in a cooking competition that takes place at WITT in the week leading up to WOMAD. The students have their dishes judged by celebrity chef and Nova Energy Taste the World host Jax Hamilton. In the 2018 cook-off, students were tested on a range of criteria, including creativity, presentation and more. Eager to see who won? WOMAD NZ believes that by protecting our environment now, future generations can also enjoy this beautiful world.

We need your help to achieve that. Everyone involved with WOMAD is encouraged to embrace the festival’s Zero Waste goals and to reduce, reuse, recycle and rethink.

That’s why we are such ardent supporters of zero waste. Zero waste means more space, better air, and a greater soil and water quality for all.

Together we can make our Zero Waste goals a reality!

Programme partner Shell has teamed up with WOMAD to ensure our festival is not only a spectacular celebration of international culture, but also an environmental success.

YOU CAN HELP!

Last year, we stopped an incredible 84 per cent of festival waste from ending up in the landfill, but we want to do more. Our ultimate goal is to become a festival that has zero waste going to the landfill.

All of the food and drink products sold at WOMAD are served in recyclable, reusable or compostable containers. Please visit one of our friendly volunteers at our Zero Waste Stations so we can recycle and compost as much of your waste as possible.

ZERO WASTE IS EASY! There are three types of colour coded bins at WOMAD NZ.

Suitable for all food waste, food containers, wooden utensils, and coffee cups.

Suitable for plastic bottles and plastic drinking cups numbered 1-7 within the recycling triangle.

These are all made from compostable cardboard or cardboard-like materials, corn, sugar cane or potato starch.

Aluminium and tin cans.

Although there will be general rubbish bins on-site, please take home with you any non-recyclable materials which you bring into the festival.

Cardboard and paper. Recycling must be clean – i.e. no traces of food on or inside.

REUSABLE COFFEE CUPS Back by popular demand! As part of the Zero Waste strategy, Shell NZ has designed reusable coffee cups. The cups will not only save on waste, but the funds raised from the sale of these cups will go to the Tiaki te Mauri o Parininihi Trust to help bring Ko-kako back to Taranaki. Ko-kako were once widespread throughout the lowland forests of Aoteaora, but predation and loss of habitat have taken a heavy toll. They’re famous for their haunting call, like deep ringing bells.
