Sixty years ago, Progressive Conservative Prime pursue new pipeline projects. Although separation Minister John G. Diefenbaker ran on the platform – of the Western Provinces is long from reality, these “One Country – One Policy – One Canada!” actions should spark the federal government to act On October 21, 2019, Canada is the farthest ever in the betterment of the Prairies, but for us it will be from a country that is strong and unified. The Prairie business as usual. provinces and the food producing areas of Ontario and Quebec elected Conservative, while the balance of the country supported the “left.” The main issue in this election was climate and the middle class… full of promises and speculations. As an example, the (teacher) Prime Minister has promised to plant two billion trees over ten years, using the power of nature to fight climate change and reach net-zero emissions by 2050 though no details were offered as to how this will be achieved. All the leaders promised tax cuts from an economy deep in debt… where is the money coming from? Our children will inherit a back breaking load; all for the sake of getting elected.
The Federal government could take some guidance from Canadian Angus Breeders. Angus is the largest beef breed in Canada, it is the strongest and most dominant in the pasture, feedlot, the marketplace and restaurants in the nation. Its representation is coast to coast and producers balance their budget!
It is time to quit thinking politics and get to something we know. Hopefully you got your crop in as Mother Nature, again, played with your calendar. Our early sales have been very solid with an abundance of buyers for the top end which also reflects the commercial sector, as good uniform calves with hair and top are fetching healthy premiums. Today’s market shows the Over the years we have heard conversations of importance of quality sire selection. separation whether its been Quebec or hints in This time of year is busy for both ranchers and Alberta. Since the polls closed, never have we seen breeders alike. In addition to the regular chores, late such a change in national unity in our country. fall is a great time to get off the farm, attend a sale or Immediately after the election, talk of Western two and attend some fall shows, where you can see Canadian separation became headline news and no a cross-section of all breeding programs. Breeders, doubt lays in the mind of the Prime Minister. The many of your customers are selling their calves, a trip cry from Western Canada holds merit as Scott Moe, to the market will not be a wasted day. Producers Premier of Saskatchewan has been at odds with the need to analyze their herd bull battery and their feds since he was elected. In a letter, the day after the crock cows, that salvage will get you your next herd election, Moe called for a new deal for the Western bull or replacement females and not help pay for Provinces, calling on the Prime Minister to kill the Trudeau’s renovations. carbon tax, negotiate a new equalization formula and

Many people have mixed reactions when you bring up the topic of mental health. Some people openly talk about the difficulties they’re experiencing. Some choose to ignore their mental health, or believe the whole idea of mental health is a load of manure. Others have no awareness of the impact their poor mental health has on them, on the people around them, or on their business. Thankfully, there has been an overall increase in mental health awareness in the agriculture community. Ag producers are talking, and industry is listening. Social media and industry leaders are providing the opportunity for people to reach out and share their experiences and to support and help each other. Talking about mental health is great, but it’s time to take it a step further and to do some work. We as a society, especially as ag producers, need to do more than offer words that encourage people to “reach out” or to “talk about it.” Talking about mental health helps the people who know they are experiencing difficulties, who are ready to listen or participate in the mental health conversation, and who are talkers. What about the people who are not talkers? Or, what about the people whose really poor state of mental health is their normal, and they don’t know any different? You may not recognize those people as having mental health difficulties. Instead, you probably refer to them as grouchy, stubborn, hard to deal with, or the person who can suck the life out of any conversation. Sound familiar? Do you know anyone who fits that description? Do you fit that description?
your mental health and wellbeing is very similar to the steps you would take for improving your calf crop. It starts with looking at the facts.
Your mental health and wellbeing are important, whether you choose to talk about it or not and whether you are aware of it or not. Most people don’t recognize how influential wellbeing is in our daily lives. Poor mental health can sink your relationships and your business. It affects your ability to think, to sleep, to make decisions, and to physically do your work. You and your wellbeing are worth investing time into, just like you do in running your cowherd. This may be surprising, but working on
This is a strategy you can use for improving your wellbeing. Ask yourself, “How am I physically? How am I mentally and emotionally?” It is important to take a little time to check in with yourself and then truthfully answer the questions. You may be surprised by your own answers. A rule of thumb for this strategy is to focus on describing yourself and how you are behaving, thinking, and feeling. For example, your answer might include, “I feel rested, content, and happy.” Your answer may also include

Strategy #1: take inventory Let’s use the example of making money off of your herd. You auction your calves, get the cheque back and, once again, it’s not as much as you thought it would be. There are a few different reactions you may have in this scenario: • You can shrug your shoulders, think you have no control, and continue breeding and raising your cattle as you always did. (Will this help you to improve your calf crop? Probably not.) • You can be angry, yell at the auction manager and take your anger out on your partner, and then continue breeding and raising your cattle as you always did. (Will this help you to improve your calf crop? Probably not, and may cost you money with a divorce.) • You can take a realistic look back at the set of calves you sold and think about what’s going on, were they quality cattle? (Will this help you to improve your next calf crop? It has potential!) Looking at the facts helps to identify the areas of strengths, and the areas that could use some improvement.

The New Traits and Angus GS Program In our recent survey, Canadian Angus members and commercial customers identified traits that are of economic and utmost importance for them. In order for your Canadian Angus Association to deliver EPDs for these traits we need to start measuring and recording these new traits. YOUR ASSOCIATION HAS AN INCREDIBLE OFFER FOR MEMBERS WHO MEASURE AND RECORD MATURE COW WEIGHTS!
112 We have partnered with Neogen Canada to offer you the Angus GS genomic test (which includes parentage verification) for $25/head for herds that measure and record the following information on their female herd inventory: • Mature cow weights (taken within 45 days of calf weaning weight) • Body condition score (taken on date of mature cow weight) • Hoof angle and claw set • Teat and udder (taken within 72 hours of calving)
Cover Photography Grant Rolston
This incredible offer is only available to the first 5,000 head enrolled. Each will receive the Angus GS test at the discounted price of $25/test.
The Angus GS test gives members more accurate EPDs, genomic percentile ranks and parentage verification. The CAA parentage verification policy requires all sires (born on or after January 1, 2019) to be parent verified so having Angus GS testing on your cow herd is of great value!
To enroll and take advantage of this offer, please contact Kajal Devani at kdevani@cdnangus.ca or 403-537-5604.

As I write this issue of the “Real World,” the temperature outside is darn cold; I can feel the effects of global warming, as it was minus thirty-five overnight. Over the past year, I have developed a belly full of environmental gurus who place the blame on agriculture. I think that Greta Thunberg and David Suzuki need to come out here and thaw a few watering bowls on a day such as today and get the true picture of global warming. The 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards in Beverley Hills, California banned meat from the menu, citing livestock as being the cause of climate change. Many of these opinionated entertainers attended by flying in on their private jets so they could flaunt their cosmetic lifestyles, without a clue about the environment… what a crock! We are now entering a new year and decade, with it comes optimism and enthusiasm. 2019 was a mixed year on mother nature’s behalf; moisture was sporadic and pocketed, but most producers gathered enough winter forage. Although, there are areas where harvest has not been completed, as swathes still lay under the snow, waiting for an April harvest. The commercial sector saw a rewarding feeder and stocker market for good quality, heavy weight calves and the purebred sector saw records set at several events. Once again, there was demand for high quality seed stock at high levels and fall bull sales were very strong for the most part. The signs point upward for 2020. After two years of uncertainty in the beef market, it appears that
Japan and China have settled their trade restrictions against North America. The African Swine Fever which destroyed half the pig population in China and neighboring countries is forcing them to import pork or find another protein supply… this pork requirement will no doubt benefit all red meat sectors. Reaching an agreement in the Canada-United StatesMexico pact (what was NAFTA) should help trade on the North American continent. Cattle inventories have not grown, but heavier carcasses have offset the small decline in meat supplies. Consumer demand is increasing, and packers are talking of a healthy increase in beef prices by the end of the first quarter. Angus breeders should be very proud of their accomplishments. Over the past decade or two, breeders have been drastically improving their product. No doubt Certified Angus Beef has been a standard, but breeders have tended to the “right kind,” resulting in higher quality with extra pay weight. But the key watch word is quality… whether you are acquiring your next herd bull or purchasing breeding females. Remember that your herd bull is fifty percent of your calf crop. As you enjoy perusing this commercial issue, you will find the best bulls on offer within. These dedicated breeders have high quality programs with the newest and freshest genetics. Do not hesitate to contact any of these leading breeders to discuss their bulls and your breeding requirements. Let’s all have a great spring!

For example, your answer might include, “I feel rested, content, and happy.” Your answer may also include
your mental health and wellbeing is very similar to the steps you would take for improving your calf crop. It starts with looking at the facts. Strategy #1: Take inventory Let’s use the example of making money off of your herd. You auction your calves, get the cheque back and, once again, it’s not as much as you thought it would be.
Strategies for breeding your own wellbeing: 1. Take inventory, focus on the facts of how you are feeling, thinking, and behaving. 2. Identify what you need, and what you can do to make improvements. 3. Follow through and evaluate the outcome. 4. Repeat Today’s Angus Advantag e 46

descriptions such as, “I am tired, feel frustrated. I’m yelling a lot, angry, anxious, over-worked. I’m really negative. I just realized I may treat my family like crap.”
talking (shocking, I know), give that a try. Just making those few changes will improve your ability to handle stress, and will hopefully start to improve your relationships.
Keep in mind that it’s okay to be uncomfortable thinking about yourself in this way. It’s uncomfortable because we’re not used to it, and possibly because you might learn some things about yourself that surprise you. Push through the uncomfortable, for how do we improve our wellbeing if we don’t? Just a heads up, if your answer includes details like, “I’m terrible, there’s crop still in the field, I had a wreck at calving, and my spouse is a hellish nightmare,” that’s more about parts of your life and not specifically about you. Start by focusing on you specifically.
Strategy #3: Follow through and evaluate the outcome Returning to the example, we identified some facts about the calves, areas to improve, and some ideas as to how to make the changes that are within our control. You followed through with the idea of breeding to a performance bull that could add some hair, and perhaps made changes to your feeding practices. The calves sell, and that’s the end of the story? No, of course not! You look at the cheque knowing that you had no control over the market price. But did the calves have more hair? Did they weigh more? Following through and evaluating the outcome is a very important step to making improvements.
Strategy #2: Identify what you need and what you can do Using the example again, you’ve taken a realistic look at the set of calves you sold and identified that they weren’t as heavy as you thought they were. The calves didn’t have enough grow in them. Another thing is that maybe they could use more hair. So, what do you need and what can you realistically do to make improvements? It’s not feasible to go buy a new cowherd, but maybe you can look to breed your cows to a higher performance bull that also adds hair. You also think you can take a look at pasture management or your feeding practices to see if you can make improvements there. This is a strategy you can use for improving your wellbeing. If you did step #1 and took an inventory of how you’re doing, maybe you identified that you are very tired, you feel overworked and anxious, and that you’re yelling and not treating your family very well. What do you need and what can you do to make some improvements in those specific areas? For starters, feeling tired can be related to a lack of sleep, poor nutrition, and dehydration. During certain times of the year (for example, calving), it can be a challenge to physically get enough sleep. During those times, it is important to fit in sleep when you can, even if it’s napping for 15 to 30 minutes during the day. Getting some rest also helps to balance out a person’s emotions. Eat a variety of proteins, fruits and vegetables, and make sure you are drinking enough water. Your tractor won’t run if it is out of fuel, well neither will your body. For any negative behaviours you realize you do, like yelling, think about if there are certain times you behave that way. The moment you recognize that you are doing the negative behaviour, stop. Even if you are in mid yell while you’re sorting cattle and you hear yourself, stop. Believe me, your family won’t mind if you don’t follow through. An alternative to yelling is
This strategy is also important for us to use in our own daily lives. Perhaps you identified from the first strategy that you were tired, angry, negative, and a jerk to your family. You identified you needed more sleep and to eat better and you made positive changes in those areas. When you check in on yourself to evaluate the outcome, you may be surprised to realize that by getting some extra sleep, you were able to think more clearly, were less frustrated, and less angry. The times you did yell at your family, you stopped yourself and tried talking instead. By looking into what’s working and what’s not with the little changes made, you may realize that you and your partner have a better relationship because there is way less yelling, less silence, and more communicating. Strategy #4: Repeat Working on our wellbeing is an ongoing process, and it may not be easy. Raising cattle isn’t easy either, but it is worth it, as is working on your mental health and wellbeing. The strategies are meant as a step for taking action to do just that. Please recognize the examples in this article are somewhat simplified, and life may not be as straightforward. Look at the facts of who you are, how you feel, think, and behave, and make small changes as you go. You didn’t build your cowherd overnight. You’ve likely invested years of your time and energy to build the herd you have today. Your mental health and wellbeing are worthy of that same commitment. Turner Boys Shorty had a problem, an addiction of sorts. It wasn’t life threatening, or at least it hadn’t been, but he was never quite sure. The problem…he couldn’t say no. This time it started with a phone call one Thursday evening. “Shorty…it’s Cec. Could we get you to give us a hand on the weekend?” “Oh hi Cec.” Shorty’s brain was shouting…NO NO NO!, but his mouth was saying “Sure Cec. What’s up?”
a vacant spot. He had finished unloading his horse and dog before a Turner showed up. Cyril showed up first, he come screaming around an old tractor on a gleaming new quad. “Hey Shorty! Thanks for coming. You seen Cec?” “I just…” Shorty was interrupted by Cec as he appeared on a sputtering old red Honda quad that had seen way better days. If machines could look unhappy, this one did. “Come on Cec we gotta go. You’re late!”
“We gotta work cows and, well, umm.” “Should I bring a horse?” “Yeah if you could, that would be great! Say about nine on Saturday morning?” Cec didn’t even wait for an answer, “Thanks Shorty, see ya.” Shorty hung up and immediately kicked himself. “Dammit!” The Turner boys ran a place down the road a bit. Well ran was maybe a stretch, but then so was calling them boys. Cec was the oldest, he was in his late sixties, and his brother Cyril was a couple years younger. The two boys were polar opposites, both in stature and attitude. Cec was calm, border lining on lazy, while Cyril was wired for sound. If Cec were an inch and a half taller, he would be a perfect cube, he was as wide as he was thick, just short. Cyril was tall and so skinny he barely cast a shadow. To say the Turner place was run down was, well, an understatement. There wasn’t a usable fence on the place, the corrals were held together with twine and wire and the yard littered with equipment and vehicles that were left right where they broke down. Shorty wheeled his truck and trailer into
Cec was not the least impressed by his brother’s enthusiasm. He turned his quad off, and extended his hand to Shorty. “Thanks for coming Shorty. How you been?” “Cec! Let’s go! Come on. Shorty, we are goin’ to bring the cows in from the meadow. We’ll chase them on the quads, all you need to do is watch the gate on top of the hill. Come on Cec let’s go! Plug in the fence Cec!” Before Cec could answer Cyril was gone in a cloud of smoke and dust. Cec fired up his quad and off he sputtered. Shorty followed the two into the pasture and headed to his post. The fences on either side of him were…well pretty much nonexistent. The boy’s solution for the state of disrepair was a single strand of electric wire held in place by white stakes. Shorty hated electric fences. He was soon at his spot, a sorry excuse for a gate that hung precariously between a broken post and a rotten one. He pulled his horse up, and turned to watch the show. His dog, Mike laid down next to the horse and began to nod off. Shorty watched the boys roaring around herding the entire

commotion towards Shorty. The lead cow was on a dead run, with the rest of them strung out behind. As the lead cow drew near, she turned her attention to the gate that Shorty was guarding. She slowed as she got close, sized Shorty up, and decided he was not a problem. She walked around him and that is when Mike woke up. He looked at Shorty, then at the cow, back at Shorty. Shorty waved his left hand at the dog and the dog sprang into action. Mike ran to cut the cow off. The cow saw the dog and lowered her head, before she charged at Mike. Mike locked onto her nose. The cow bellowed as if she had been shot. “Mike! That ‘ll do.” Mike let go and shook the cow snot and blood from his mouth. The cow headed for the corral. In the meantime, the Turner boys had moved the remainder of the herd close to Shorty. The cows were intent on following the wounded leader and Cyril was intent on getting them there as quickly as possible. He roared back in forth behind the cows, shouting and swearing as he went. Cec was following a single cow on the far side of the herd. The cow that had garnered Cec’s attention was…well she was a bitch. She was intent on not doing whatever it was that Cec was trying to make her do. If she was a human, Shorty figured she would be covered in tattoos and ride a Harley. As she crested the hill and started down the other side, she made her move. The cow started to the right, and when Cec swung the quad that way, the cow spun to her left and bolted between Cec and Cyril. Cec slammed his quad in reverse and turned the quad to his right. The quad shot backwards and Cec stood up and reached to the shifter. At that very moment the quad’s metal frame made contact with the electric fence.
Now Shorty wasn’t sure if it was the shock or momentum that fired Cec from his mount, but whatever it was, Cec shot off the quad and landed on his back on the downhill side of the now stationary quad. Shorty figured he looked like a turtle laying shell down. The problem being was that Cec was positioned with his head downhill and to get up he had to crabwalk around so that he could roll over and get to his feet. By now, Cyril had gathered up the biker chick and was running her towards the corral. Cec was flustered and wasn’t really thinking. He went to jump back on the bike and was shocked back into reality. Shorty could swear the quad looked happier than it was an hour or so ago. “Cec hold on!” Shorty was swinging out of the saddle. He grabbed the sorting stick off the back of the quad and held the wire away from the bike. “Okay…take it away” “Thanks Shorty” Cec gingerly guided the old quad away from the wire. “You okay Cec?” Cec had shut the quad off and was dusting himself off. “Yeah, I am good. Damn that wire packs a punch! Thanks Shorty.” “No problem Cec, as long as you are okay…” Cec gave himself the quick once over, then gingerly approached the old quad. He reached for the handlebars, touched them, and quickly pulled his hand back. Satisfied that all was well with he and his mount, he swung himself into position and fired the quad up. As he pulled away, Shorty noticed that he never took his eye off the electric fence and stayed as far away as possible. “Mike.” Shorty looked over at the dog trotting on his left, “If there comes a time that I get bucked off a quad… or for that matter, use electric fences, tell me to quit.” Mike looked up and Shorty saw him nod.
Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia. After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in addition to all major livestock shows, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Canadian Western Agribition and all major National Junior shows in the summer months. Grant and Lauralee Rolston reside in Vulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.” Today’s Angus Advantag e 67

What’s Your
Legacy? Canadian Angus Foundation’s Building the Legacy Sale 9 Saturday June 13, 2020 – 8pm EST Delta Beausejour, Moncton, New Brunswick Building the Legacy has become Canadian Angus Foundation’s main fundraiser focus and is a main source for generating resources to further our mission. Please join us. The Canadian Angus Foundation functions to preserve and expand the Angus breed for future generations through education, youth development, scientific and market research, and historical preservation and restoration. The Canadian Angus Foundation was incorporated in 1993 and is the charitable arm of the Canadian Angus Association. The vision of Building the Legacy is to allow the Foundation to build monetary resources. The Foundation uses its funds to provide opportunities for our youth, young breeders and membership to grow in the areas of leadership, marketing, networking, animal husbandry, genetic improvement and to learn about developing tools to enhance Angus production. The vision also includes the importance of preserving Angus history. By fostering these areas we can ensure our Angus history is not lost and will keep Angus as the breed of choice for the commercial beef sector and end users for years to come. Because of generous donors, we can support initiatives, scholarships, travel bursaries and learning opportunities. Through benevolent donations of livestock, semen, embryos, items and experiences, as well as the purchasing of the auction offerings, the Foundation is able to put together a great suite of opportunities for our Angus membership. Please join us!

It was a memorable steak supper under the stars. Live music played in the background and I thought to myself, “I can’t remember the last time I’ve laughed this much.”
There were some great storytellers in our ranks and it seemed one tale would just spark an even better one from across the table. The food was outstanding, but the company surpassed it.
If you’re honest, there might be a time or two you’ve labeled “city people” and said, “if the consumer only knew [fill in the blank.]”
Meeting them in real life, all of a sudden, they went from abstract “consumers” in some far-off place to But as I got back to my hotel room, I wondered passionate partners in the beef community, with a if I should have formally facilitated discussions name and a face. between the far ends of the beef chain, like some Protein demand is alive and well, in large part thanks kind of moderator or emcee. And we’re in this together. Over the course of that conference, I watched cattle families take the stage and instantly relate. The audience laughed and some even cried as cattlemen and women shared bits of real life on the ranch. They talked about kids arguing who had the better heifer and about trying to save newborn calves they ultimately couldn’t when blizzards struck. It was a great evening.
It captured the high points and heartaches that make up cattle production. They didn’t talk about the technicalities of increasing calories during a winter cold snap or about the intricacies of genetic selection, but they conveyed the fact that cattlemen care… about their families, about their livestock, about their businesses and their way of life. Too Many Irons In The Fire By Nicole Lane Erceg
A wise friend once told me, “You can have too many irons in the fire, as long as your fire is hot enough.” There’s a lot of economical relevance that can be bred into cattle these days and plenty of new technology to apply in management—but none of that matters if we’re heaping irons into a bed of ashes. In an industry where 75% Choice is barely average, cattle need to start with genetics that can reach higher grades than yesterday. The number one reason cattle miss out on premium Choice programs is a lack of marbling. The bar for high-quality beef keeps rising. Imagine turning the handle on the water faucet and nothing comes out. Reaching the scoop into the feedbag only to scrape the bottom and come up empty. Picking up the coffee pot to pour, but no liquid fills your cup. You can’t work with what you don’t have. Seems obvious, but it’s an obstacle I stumble on regularly, putting too many things on a mile-long to-do list, certain I’ll just figure out how to get it all done. I offer up time and resources I don’t have, to try and fit all the priorities. When this state of chaos takes over my life, it yields few positive results. Overbooking days and weeks is common across the cattle community, too. In the sea of never-ending ranch demands with a todo list longer than a roll of barbwire, it can be hard to prioritize. You need a calving-ease bull that produces a heavy weaned calf that can thrive in your part of the world and beat the breed average for all important criteria in a balanced phenotypic package. When it comes to management, balancing nutrition, health, pasture rotations, fence maintenance and office tasks are more than enough to keep you busy—and that’s leaving a lot of things off the list.
Today’s cattle markets may not be as strong as you hoped for, but that doesn’t have to squelch profitability. Cattlemen who prioritized carcass traits along with other economically important requirements are still running in the black. Premium programs still pay a premium when the market disappoints. But without the genetic potential built in, there’s nothing to be realized, nothing to be gained with longer feeding or better management. It’s like trying to fill a bucket when the well is dry. If we set a good fire, keep it stoked and then stack the irons by prioritizing the consumer first, we’ll get a whole lot more beef in the branded box. And that means more money in cattlemen’s pockets.
In the midst of these demands, it’s easy to forget an important factor in producing good beef:the marbling to satisfy consumers. The end result may be a heavy calf that looks great but yields a final product that fails on the plate. All that work for a sub-par eating experience or a disappointed buyer who won’t risk trying beef again for some time. If everything is important, nothing is. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have it all. Today’s Angus Advantage 100

Betting On Beef By Nicole Erceg
What does beef production look like in 2030? It’s a heavy question, one difficult to grasp with the uncertainty, but worth considering. If history is a lesson, we’ve learned a lot in the past 10 years that forecast what the next 10 will hold. Cow country started the decade in a low spot. The drought of 2011-12 forced cattlemen to make deep cuts, but 201415 followed with record prices. From there it’s been up and down but innovations enhanced decision-making in genetics, health and management along the way. When the decade began, most ranchers I called on didn’t carry smartphones; now there’s an app with live updates on the cattle market and herd records in nearly everyone’s pocket.
CattleFax projects record-high Prime and Choice production for 2020, a fifth year consecutive record year for premium-quality beef. Demand for Choice beef was up 3% this year and up 50% compared to recession lows, to say nothing of higher demand for premium brands and Prime. Those figures translate to higher grid-market payouts. The Choice-Select spread will reach a new record average of $14.60/cwt. in 2019. The media narrative is only a poker face that ignores fundamentals. The share of people on vegetarian and vegan diets has hovered at about 2-3% for the past two decades.
As we turn the calendar page, many will bid 2019 goodbye with great fervor. From devastating to at least annoying weather, fieldwork delays, market swings, the uncertainties of new trade policy to “fake meat” headlines, it’s normal to feel like the deck has been stacked against beef for the last twelve months.
That leaves a lot of meat eaters out there ready to be served and craving a high-quality product.
If we were to make predictions based on where the industry will be based on this year alone, it’s easy to look at a sorry calf check just cashed and only see more clouds on the horizon.
We will never be able to predict exactly how the chips will fall, but if there’s a safe bet to make, it’s to keep it on marbling. It’s the ace in our hand to stack play as a sure predictor of consumer satisfaction.
But every hard time has a silver lining. I spoke with a cattleman recently who got into agriculture during the 1980s farm crisis. The outlook for farming was as poor as he, but doors closing for others provided opportunity for a passionate young man to capitalize on rented ground. Today, a third generation tags along as he and his son manage cows and farm together.
I’m not a betting woman, nor do I have a crystal ball, but if I were to project what beef production will look like a decade from now, it’s even better, thanks to ever greater quality and consistency.
The struggles of 2019 won’t last long, except for lessons learned. There’s much to be won in the next decade for cattlemen who aren’t afraid to look into the unknown and say, “Deal me in.”
We can’t enjoy the mountaintop views without first crossing the valleys. The headlines in national media paint a scary picture: “By 2030, the U.S. dairy and cattle industry will have collapsed, as microbial protein factories take over.” It may look like dim prospects for our beef community, but numbers just don’t lie. In the last decade, cattlemen have made significant progress in the quality of the product we provide to consumers. The industry averaged 61% Choice and 3% Prime in 2010. We’ll close out 2019 with 71% of cattle grading Choice and 8.5% Prime, with twice as much Premium Choice. Consumers have tasted the progress and they like it. Today’s Angus Advantag e 108

Beyond The Storm By Abbie Burnett Disappointing cattle prices loom like storm clouds. A third of producers are losing money, while others get by with modest returns and worry about those thunderheads. There are silver linings, of course. CattleFax analyst Duane Lenz told the 2019 Angus Convention crowd there could be another year or two under the cloud. But then, he’s optimistic, bullish even, for future beef prices. Consumer beef demand for high-quality beef is stronger than it’s ever been. That’s especially important because growing supplies will need growing demand, projected at an extra pound of beef per person next year. More beef in grocery carts means opportunity for cattlemen raising the right kind of cattle, he says. “Meat buyers won’t mess with Select anymore,” Lenz said. “Their customers don’t want it.” The widening Choice/Select spread reflects that. A six-year average through 2018 was $8 per hundredweight (/cwt.) to $9, but 2019 looks to finish near a record $24 Choice advantage. “And that’s not even CAB (Certified Angus Beef® brand), just commodity Choice, in these days when the line between high Select and low Choice is blurred,” he said. For those with premium Angus cattle, the CAB/Choice spread at $10/cwt. supports additional premiums. The combination of discounts for Select with premiums for upper Choice and Prime send a steady signal to keep moving genetics and management toward better beef. Angus producers responded to allow CAB brand Prime sales to grow by more than 35% in 2019. Heavy supplies of pork and poultry compete with Select, but not as effectively with premium beef, Lenz noted. Exports favor highly marbled beef and this year is on track to be the second-best ever for meat sales overseas. African Swine
Fever in China creates pull-through demand for U.S. beef to the countries supplying that shortfall in protein. The rate at which other countries are supplying China’s meat isn’t sustainable, Lenz said, noting the Oriental giant may open a wider door to U.S. imports next year. The forecast fed-cattle high next year should be $125/cwt. in the spring, but if a deal is made with China, Lenz expects that to be $130/cwt. The low next summer could be $95/cwt., but that’s the commodity base. “You put all those premiums on top of one another and Prime is worth hundreds of dollars more than Select,” Lenz noted. Rainy-day chores to ensure future market premiums could include analyzing herd data and poring over sire data to find the best matches. Producers might even consider moving their calving dates to hit a better seasonal market. The U.S. beef cow herd seems to have reached a stable size of 29 to 32 million head, currently recovered to the pre-drought level of 10 years ago, Lenz said. Minor liquidation is expected over the next couple of years before the fed-cattle harvest reaches a cyclical high in 2021. But each year between now and then will still have its opportunities, its silver linings. Thinking about selling your 2019 calves outright? “Cool your jets,” Lenz said. They’ll have more value with added pounds, so he suggested a “look at retaining ownership, especially for Angus producers that are producing quality beef that will grade Choice or better.” Again, it’s consumer demand to the rescue. The economy is generally good enough to let people spend their money on higher priced, premium protein options. But not just any beef— they want quality. Clouds may be dark and growing, but Lenz said brighter days lie ahead for cattlemen who produce a higher quality product. The sun is nearly peeking out: “I hope I’m not being too optimistic, but demand is just so good.”

We have partnered with Neogen Canada to offer you the Angus GS genomic test (which includes parentage verification) for $25/head for herds that measure and record the following information on their female herd inventory: • Mature cow weights (taken within 45 days of calf weaning weight) • Body condition score (taken on date of mature cow weight) • Hoof angle and claw set • Teat and udder (taken within 72 hours of calving) This incredible offer is only available to the first 5,000 head enrolled.

Saskatchewan Sweepstakes
What a year 2019 was! And certainly, a special one for the Saskatchewan Angus Association (SAA) as we celebrated 100 Years (1919-2019). In honour of the event and to fill in a funding gap, the Saskatchewan Angus Century Sweepstakes was born. The event was open to calendar year Black and Red Angus bull calves. It was held in conjunction with the Masterpiece Sale on December 12, 2019 at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon, SK . The event had 41 bulls entered from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta and 58 members participating. The judging of the classes with the People’s Choice format was fun and engaging for all. Many exhibitors found the traffic through the barn to be well worth the trip. Our congratulations to our Red Angus Sweepstakes Champion - Red Rainbow TNF Commotion 6G from Rainbow Red Angus and our Black Angus Sweepstakes Champion - DMM Canadian Classic 12G from Miller Wilson Angus who were each awarded $35,000. Also, a special thank you to our buyers EKW Red Angus and MJT Cattle Company for purchasing the champions, raising $22,250 for the Association. Our voting members will be receiving 10 straws of semen on the champion of their membership colour. The Saskatchewan Angus Association sincerely thanks the Sweepstakes sponsors, committee, members and volunteers who made this event possible and assisted in its promotion.

A Rare Opportunity The need for unification on a disease traceability program By Abbie Burnett It’s been 16 years since the “cow that stole Christmas” shut down exports from North America and cost the beef industry an estimated $9 billion. Those were the days when terrorists also threatened to infect U.S. herds with anthrax. All these years later and still no national traceability program? Four Sixes Ranch manager Joe Leathers let some exasperation show while addressing the Feeding Quality Forum in Amarillo this summer.
the industry makes use of production technology. But when it comes to using those tools for traceability? “We use very little,” Leathers said. The biggest obstacle he sees is a lack of standardization. UHF readers don’t read all UHF tags the same way and data storage options are varied but lack user choice as to national, state or third-party group. “We’ve got to keep the flexibility as individual producers to make our own decisions,” he said, noting a need for common-sense regulations that work for every size operation “at the speed of commerce.” Leathers said even if traceability technology didn’t happen to pay its own way up front, there’s no room for debate.
“How can we afford not to have a disease traceability program as an insurance policy?” he asked. “Are we going to have another disease outbreak? Yeah. That’s realistic.”
“The consumer wants it. End of discussion,” he said. “Whether their concerns or their desires are realistic, it makes zero difference.”
Leathers put traceability to the test during the 2011 drought when he secured leases for nine ranches in five states north and west of his base in Guthrie, Texas. Moving up to 5,000 cows across state lines meant reading metal clips and culling. It took four summer-dawn roundups that had to end by mid-morning to avoid greater heat and stress.
More and more consumers simply want to know more about their food.
“I figured out real quick, this is not efficient,” he recalled. “It’s not good on the cattle. It’s not good on your labor.”
Rather than take the reins in proactive leadership, Leathers said most industry organizations are merely reactive, from politics to foreign trade.
That’s when the Four Sixes team began using electronic identification (EID) tags that permitted collecting and loading the cattle in a single day. Tag numbers downloaded to a computer, he printed and delivered them to the vet barn, where interstate shipping papers were soon in hand.
“Who is responsible for giving them what they want and need so that we can sell our product for a higher price? We are. Yet our industry is segmented in arguing and bickering,” Leathers noted.
“If we don’t do anything, we lose our competitive advantage in the world with foreign trade,” he said. Leading means moving past a simple, “this won’t work.”
Use of those tags has become a management tool that easily pays its way, with implications for all who ask for incentives, he added.
It also means getting past the October announcement that USDA has paused program development. That doesn’t mean the issues will go away, but it could mean more time for producer input.
Rather than scan each animal down an alley chute, the UHF tag reader records individual cattle by group. Leathers can call up details on any cow from his phone, including location, breeding and vaccination history.
“There is going to be a disease traceability program in our future in the United States. So get over it. It’s either going to be mandated or it’s going to be something designed by producers and the industry,” Leathers said.
He can see her calves’ data or whole pens of feedyard and carcass grading performance and generate reports for potential buyers. Finding a sire group that made 35% Prime, he adjusted sire selection to create more of the best to highlight in those reports.
The 12-member Producer Traceability Council he co-chairs shared a few consensus points in May, but it’s still an open discussion.
“Then I ask for a price substantially higher than what the market is,” he told cattlemen. “You know what? I nearly always get what I ask for.” U.S.-produced beef sets the world standard for quality and
Web information searches can find ways to join that conversation and Leathers especially invites participation from all who can bring a positive and “common-sense approach… start it as an insurance policy and then let’s work as an industry to make us money.”

Capturing Value For Calves By Morgan Marley The way we market fed cattle has changed. Better formula and grid-based pricing structures channeled greater returns to cattlemen, which led to higher quality in the American cow herd. It trickles down to the cow-calf producer and how they choose to sell calves. Consumer dollars favor adding value to the end product and it pays to start down that road while still on the ranch. That’s the consensus of panelists at the 2019 Range Beef Cow Symposium in Mitchell, NE. Those included the Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand’s Paul Dykstra, Nebraska feeder and rancher Gary Darnall and South Dakota Angus cattleman Britton Blair. “As a cow-calf producer, we have more opportunities to receive value at different segments, or different points in our operation than any other segment in our industry,” Darnall said. “But we really find out when we retain ownership.” All the panelists echoed that message. So why don’t more producers retain ownership of their calves all the way to the packer? Risk. There’s a higher death loss once calves leave your ranch. But Blair said, “that comes back on you” and making sure of your vaccination and management program. “The longer you own the animal, the longer you’re at the mercy of the market,” Darnall said. Market swings also bring opportunity to alert watchers who can hedge to lock in a profit. “But you have to be ready to pull the trigger,” Blair said.
When you get past the risk, advantages await for those who try. Many cattlemen don’t operate in commercial feeding areas and it takes effort to contact feedyard managers. But there aren’t a lot of secrets in the cattle business, the panelists said. Just ask the right people the right questions. “The good part is, the livestock business is a people business,” Blair said. “And I think it’s easy to talk to those guys. And those guys want customers and they want to talk to you. They want the opportunity to do business with you.” Deciding to retain ownership is a dynamic commitment involving how and when. “The market is a moving target,” Blair said and it may not fit every year. “It makes more sense to retain ownership in a bad market than a good one, even though that’s the hardest time.” When the market is high, you’re going to be profitable no matter how you market your calves. But when times are tough, retaining
Today’s Angus Advantag e 146
Insides2020-81-164.indd 146
1/27/2020 2:50:43 PM
ownership can buy time for the market to go up and capture more dollars. “A lot of people don’t know that some feedyards will finance the cattle, the feed and the risk protection,” Blair said. “It makes it pretty easy when you send your cattle there. They’ll send you back around 75% of the value of your calves and keep 25% as essentially money down. They’ll finance the rest.” That takes care of some cash-flow concerns, perhaps offering significant payment in the fall and another when calves are finished a few months later. Another advantage is the information from packer harvest reports. “The carcass data you get back can be very valuable to you,” Darnall said. “You can take it back home and use it in your management program to help increase whatever traits you want, to add more value to your product.” Blair later said knowing both feedyard and carcass performance helps in choosing a packer grid to market through. After a few years of success, dollars may argue for staying the course. “Once you’ve retained ownership and if you have those aboveaverage cattle, you’ll never get paid for their total value on a commodity market,” Blair said. “Whether you’ve sold them at the highest price at the sale that day or not.” Adding value matters to your bottom line, but also to consumers. They expect the beef on their dinner table to be worth its relatively higher price. “As we increase marbling and quality grade substantially, then we also increase the percentage of satisfied eating experiences for consumers,” Dykstra said. Cattle have changed in recent years, he noted with a nod to the widespread drought several years ago.
“Since then, cow herds have built back with replacements that genetically improved quality grade,” Dykstra said, resulting in more Choice and higher grading carcasses than ever. Demand, however, “remains robust.” Grid pricing reflects a portion of the cutout values, which have increased dramatically for premium quality, he added. In early November, a typical Prime carcass was worth nearly $300 more than Select. The CAB premium was $218 and Choice was $127. If you retained ownership, had above-average cattle and sold on a grid in fall 2019, you should have received a hefty paycheck. “Packers will only add Choice premiums to our pocketbook if we beat the average of cattle harvested on a weekly basis,” Dykstra explained. It’s natural to think of the individual animals and grids even pay on a per-carcass basis, but some value calculations come from load and plant averages. The Choice premium is a case in point. “When we talk about the Choice-Select spread at $25 and $26 here most recently, we don’t get all of that,” Dykstra explained. “We get 30% of it because the packer expects 70% Choice on a weekly basis.” Producing average quality isn’t the goal. In the last four years, 30% of CAB sales growth has come from Prime alone. “Most of us don’t think about a grocery store as an area where we’re going to see a lot of folks wanting to pay for something like Prime quality grade product,” Dykstra said, “but we certainly have seen that happen.” Consumer demand is there. Cattlemen just have to keep aiming for higher quality to meet it and reap the premiums. Visit the Range Beef Cow Symposium website for more event coverage, http://www.rangebeefcow.com/2019/newsroom.html.
