The Canadian Simmental Association Celebrates The rugged and beautiful coastline of Eastern Canada was the backdrop for the 44th Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Simmental Association which was held in Truro, Nova Scotia August 25th. The events in Truro officially began Thursday evening on the grounds of the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition with a meet and greet reception that was very well attended and provided Simmental breeders from across Canada the opportunity to renew old friendships as well as make new acquaintances.

It showed a marked increase from the previous years in both the average prices paid as well as the overall gross. Cattle sold to locations throughout eastern Canada and there was also strong bidder and buyer interest from Western Canada. The open show on Saturday morning saw 115 head of cattle on display and judged by Mr. Wilf Davis from Carberry, MB. This was an excellent quality group with a top end that could walk and talk in any show ring in the country and will be one of the largest shows in Canada this year. All of the exhibitors who dedicated their effort and time in bringing cattle to Truro should be commended.

This year’s auction was a tremendous success with a new record amount of $22,380 being raised. To date the GSSF has raised a total of $86,458.50 through seven charity auction events. Twothirds of the funds raised by the Foundation auctions go to the YCSA for youth development programs for young Simmental members. The remainder of the funds are used to support research and development initiatives focusing on the improvement of Simmental cattle genetics in Canada.

New to this year’s auction was the introduction of the Friends of the Foundation award. This award is given to the donator and buyer of the high selling auction item. Gibbons Farms - Vaughn and Cindy Gibbons of Stevensville, ON and More Brothers of Virden, MB, were the first recipients of this award. More Brothers purchased the bred heifer, Bar 5 FF Peona 1211Y, that was donated by Gibbons Farms. Congratulations to Bill MacLeod of Fredericton, NB who was inducted into the CSA Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame Award is given to individuals who have contributed to the expansion and growth of the Simmental breed and are considered leaders in their community and the beef industry. A strong supporter of the Simmental breed in Canada, Bill purchased his first Simmentals in 1987. Since then Bill has donated a significant amount of time and effort to advancing the Simmental breed in Canada. Bill served as a CSA Director for three separate terms (9 years) and was the Chair of the Promotion and Marketing Committee; and is an active member of the Maritime Simmental community. We would like to thank Bill for his many years of dedication and commitment to the Simmental breed. The 2012 CSA AGM will be remembered as one of the most successful ever held and congratulations to all involved in the event.

The Road from Data to Knowledge By Sean McGrath

urebred breeders are very good and diligent at collecting data on their animals. Originally associations started from people collecting data on sires and dams and transforming/presenting it in the form of pedigrees. As this information base grew, certain bloodlines and pedigrees gained favour for accomplishing certain breeding goals. This in a nutshell is how breeding data became information (pedigree) and created knowledge (applied breeding decisions). As times progressed, interest grew in collecting data such as calving ease, weaning weight and post-weaning growth. This represents data in its rawest form. A sheet showing weaning weights with corresponding tattoo numbers does not provide a great deal of information until it is formatted and compared. Converting raw weaning weights to 205 day adjusted weights is a good example of information creation. Producing in herd indexes is creating knowledge from that data. The need to combine complex forms of data and growing datasets with pedigree information was what led to the development of EPD. The easiest traits were tackled first (BW, WW, YW) and as technology advanced and the data set grew bigger, the modelling and development of EPD improved greatly and they provided more information. Much of the data (pedigree and performance) we are used to working with are actually indicators of what DNA an animal possesses and can potentially pass to its offspring. New technology is allowing us to directly measure and assess portions of the bovine genome (DNA) and include that data into evaluation of an animal. DNA data can become quite powerful information; however a lot of work needs to be done to determine what information the data provides. This is one of the key roles of the CSA Genomic Innovations project.

The catch 22 is that we need data in order to determine what information is contained in the data. Throughout history we have seen that in the space of time it takes to collect data and figure out what information it contains, there are often products marketed on the â&#x20AC;&#x153;power of the

dataâ&#x20AC;? without knowing what information will be gleaned from that data. These products serve an important role as early adopters of these technologies often provide the initial data pools required for information determination. If you were reading closely, you may have noted that I said EPD provide information and not knowledge. EPD scientifically and methodically assess available data such as pedigree, performance and DNA data. The results are information on the best estimate of an animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s genetics in relation to the rest of the breed for the trait that is analyzed. When you consider this, the data pooled into an EPD provides powerful information. The ability to reasonably rank animals in a population of several hundred thousand is quite amazing, but this is only information. Knowledge is the ability and understanding of how to apply information to decision making. In the context of cattle breeding, this means using the available EPD to target breeding goals for your operation and your customers. The information about your future goals and your customers goals is what truly allows us to implement information into knowledge based decision making. Does your customer want bigger calves? Fleshier cows? Higher quality grades or yield improvements? Better feed conversion rates? Understanding goals allows us to move from making decisions based on the information (eg: just selecting for bigger EPD) to knowledge; where we can select for EPD that match the specific production goals and management system. One of the more exciting aspects of the CSA Genomic Innovations project lies in the fact that as we progress through the process of determining what DNA data means, our information will improve in accuracy and our overall knowledge of Simmental genetics will improve. Truly understanding the information regarding customer needs will create a culture of knowledge based on decision making and position the breed to continue its successful and important role in the cowherd.

Ceci explique d’une manière simple comment des données issues des élevages sont devenues des informations (généalogie), et comment elles ont permis de générer des connaissances (décisions pratiques d’élevage).

Les EPD évaluent scientifiquement et méthodiquement les bases de données disponibles, telles que les généalogies, les performances et les données sur l’ADN. Les résultats obtenus constituent des informations correspondant au meilleur estimé qui soit du bagage génétique d’un animal pour le caractère analysé, et cela comparativement au reste des sujets de la race. Lorsque vous pensez bien, les données calculées pour obtenir un EPD nous fournissent des informations très importantes. Notre aptitude à pouvoir classer de façon raisonnable des animaux dans une population de plusieurs centaines de milliers d’individus est très remarquable, mais cela ne représente qu’une information.

Au fur et à mesure qu’on avançait dans le temps, on a constaté un intérêt croissant à recueillir des données concernant la facilité de vêlage, le poids au sevrage et la croissance post-sevrage. Celles-ci constituent des données dans une forme la plus brute qui soit. Une liste de poids au sevrage et de numéros de tatouage correspondants sur une feuille de papier ne vous procurent pas beaucoup d’informations, tant qu’elles ne sont pas comparées et exprimées sous une forme quelconque. Le fait de convertir ces poids au sevrage en poids ajustés à 205 jours représente un bon exemple de création La connaissance est davantage notre aptitude et notre compréhension d’informations. Les données sur l’ADN peuvent devenir une puissante source d’informations, toutefois on doit effectuer beaucoup de travail afin de bien déterminer les informations fournies par ces mêmes données. Voici là l’un des objectifs clé du projet de recherche de l’ASC touchant les innovations génomiques. Le piège à ce niveau est que nous devons avoir des données si on désire déterminer quelles informations nous fournissent ces données. Au cours de l’histoire, nous constatons qu’avec tout le temps requis pour recueillir des données et pour identifier les informations

En comprenant bien nos objectifs, cela nous permet de passer de la prise de décisions basées uniquement sur l’information (ex: sélectionner uniquement des EPD plus élevés) à celui d’une meilleure connaissance; où nous pouvons sélectionner des EPD en fonction de nos objectifs spécifiques de production et de notre système de gestion. L’un des aspects les plus excitants du projet d’innovations génomiques de l’ASC repose sur le fait qu’alors que nous effectuons des progrès au niveau du processus de détermination de ce que les base de données d’EPD signifient, nos informations vont gagner en précision et notre connaissance globale de la génétique Simmental sera d’autant améliorée. En comprenant vraiment les informations touchant les besoins de nos clients, nous allons créer une nouvelle culture de prise de décision basée sur la connaissance, et nous permettrons à la race de poursuivre son succès et son rôle primordial au niveau du cheptel de boucherie.

Les Célébrations Simmentals La 44 e Assemblée générale annuelle de l’Association Simmental canadienne s’est tenue le 25 août dernier à Truro en Nouvelle-Écosse, avec en arrière-scène le paysage à la fois magnifique et aride du littoral de la côte de l’est du Canada. Les activités au programme à Truro ont en fait débuté le jeudi soir, par une réception de bienvenue et de socialisation organisée sur les terrains de l’Exposition provinciale de la Nouvelle-Écosse. Celle-ci a permis aux nombreux éleveurs Simmental provenant de partout au Canada de revoir de vieux amis et de rencontrer de nouvelles connaissances. La journée suivante, un imposant groupe de jeunes membres des JESC venus de partout au Canada ont participé à la Classique nationale des jeunes éleveurs Simmental canadiens (JESC), tant au niveau des classes de présentation animale que pour celles de jugement en conformation. L’importante foule de spectateurs assistant aux compétitions a été témoin du couronnement de deux compétiteurs sélectionnés pour représenter l’ASC et les JESC lors de la Classique nationale américaine des jeunes éleveurs Simmental, laquelle se déroulera en juillet 2013 à Lincoln au Nébraska. Connor Morse de Kingston en Nouvelle-Écosse et Krista Whalen de Gould au Québec furent les heureux récipiendaires, suite à la compilation globale de leurs pointages accumulés dans les diverses classes de jugement et de présentation animale. La vente “Classique de l’eau salée”, organisée par l’Association Simmental des Maritimes, a eu lieu le vendredi soir. Tant au niveau du prix moyen payé que du montant brut total, on enregistre une hausse du prix de vente comparativement aux années précédentes. Les animaux ont été achetés par des éleveurs de l’est canadien, tandis qu’on constatait une bonne demande et plusieurs mises en provenance d’éleveurs de l’ouest canadien. Le jugement principal s’est tenu le samedi matin, avec environ 115 têtes présentées et jugées par M. Wilf Davis de Carberry au Manitoba. Les sujets présentés étaient d’excellente qualité, notamment avec les divers sujets gagnants qui pourraient être aussi très compétitifs dans n’importe laquelle exposition au pays. Ce jugement demeurera certainement l’un des plus importants cette année au Canada. Nous devons féliciter tous les éleveurs ayant consacré autant d’efforts et de temps afin de présenter leurs animaux à Truro. Lors de l’Assemblée générale annuelle du samedi après-midi, les membres ont pris connaissance des divers rapports concernant les programmes et les activités de l’ASC réalisés au cours de l’année financière 2011. Plus tard lors de l’assemblée, trois administrateurs furent nommés, soit M. Wes Mack d’Estevan en Saskatchewan, un nouveau directeur, ainsi que deux directeurs ayant accepté un second mandat, soit M. Randy Mader de Carstairs en Alberta et M. John Sullivan de Kazabazua au Québec. Le Président de

l’ASC, M. Ron Nolan, a sincèrement remercié Mme Judy Sweet de Drayton Valley en Alberta, laquelle s’est retirée du bureau de direction. Le bureau de direction a ensuite procédé à l’élection de son conseil exécutif pour l’année 2012-2013, lequel est maintenant formé du Président Ron Nolan, du Premier Vice-Président Fraser Redpath et du Second Vice-Président Randy Mader. Les activités de la fin de semaine se sont terminées le samedi soir avec le banquet de même que la vente à l’enchère de la Fondation Garth Sweet Simmental (FGSS). La vente à l’enchère de cette année a connu un succès inégalé, en permettant d’amasser un nouveau montant record de 22 380 $. Un total de 86 458.50 $ a été accumulé jusqu’à maintenant par l’intermédiaire de sept activités de levée de fonds organisées par la FGSS. Précisons que deux tiers des fonds amassés par la Fondation sont dirigés vers les programmes de développement des JESC, cela pour le bénéfice des membres des jeunes éleveurs Simmental. La balance des fonds accumulés est utilisée pour supporter des initiatives de recherche et de développement touchant spécifiquement l’amélioration génétique des bovins de race Simmental du Canada. Lors de la vente à l’enchère de cette année, on a présenté une nouvelle distinction désignée comme étant le Prix des amis de la Fondation. Ce nouveau Prix est remis au donateur ainsi qu’à l’acheteur de l’article vendu au prix le plus élevé. Les récipiendaires de cette année sont : Gibbons Farms - Vaughn et Cindy Gibbons de Stevensville en Ontario et More Brothers de Virden au Manitoba. Mentionnons que More Brothers ont acheté la taure gestante, Bar 5 FF Peona 1211Y, laquelle avait été donnée par Gibbons Farms. Nous tenons à féliciter Bill MacLeod de Frédéricton au NouveauBrunswick, qui a été intronisé au Temple de la renommée de l’ASC. Cette distinction au Temple de la renommée est remise à un individu ayant apporté une contribution significative au développement de la race Simmental et qui est également considéré comme étant un leader au sein de sa communauté et dans l’industrie bovine. Reconnu comme un ardent supporteur de la race Simmental au Canada, Bill avait acheté ses premiers sujets Simmental en 1987. Depuis ses débuts, Bill a généreusement donné de son temps et a consacré beaucoup d’efforts envers l’avancement de la race Simmental au Canada. Bill a siégé neuf ans (3 mandats) à titre de directeur de l’ASC, et il fut Président du comité de promotion et de marketing; tout en étant un membre très actif de la communauté Simmental des Maritimes. Nous aimerions remercier Bill pour toutes ces années de dévouement et d’implication au niveau de la race Simmental. Women in Simmental Country

Carla Nolan Over the years of its development in Canada, the Simmental breed has benefited from the efforts of a great number of volunteers; in particular we would like to recognize the ongoing efforts of Carla Nolan. Born in Lethbridge, Alberta and raised on an irrigated farm at Picture Butte, Carla Vath married Ron Nolan in 1958. She was a teacher in Edmonton and Calgary before becoming mom to Gregory, Shauna, and Joanne. As their children were growing up, Carla was a Teacher’s Assistant, taught Sunday school and served as a Tawny Owl for her daughter’s Brownie Group. Carla and Ron are now proud grandparents to Ron (Jr.), Michael, Sophie, Aaron, Jordon, Jessica, Mitchell and Kayla.Along with her favorite past time of spending time with her grandchildren, Carla also enjoys reading, curling, travelling and playing bridge. Before their involvement in the current day Bar 5 Stock Farm, Carla and Ron purchased their farm in Markdale, Ontario in 1973. That operation initially purchased steers and fattened them for market until Ron’s cousin invited them to a Simmental Annual General Meeting in Toronto and introduced them to the Simmental Breed. As a result of that meeting, their farm became a cow/calf operation, Harkaway Simmental Ltd. When asked what attracted them to Simmental Carla replied, “We have used Simmental Cattle for our breeding program because of their fertility, mothering ability, performance, temperament and profile. We have remained a Fullblood operation but have been cross-breeding with Red and Black Angus as well.” It has been a family venture since the beginning and the whole family has been part of its growth. In the 70’s and 80’s the harvest was done by the immediate family, Ron, Carla and children. In the 90’s modern equipment was purchased to ease the haying and harvesting—“what a relief,” says Carla. Carla’s role at Bar 5 has ranged from helping with calving, breeding, sales and bookkeeping. She kept the home fires burning when Ron was away on business trips, as he also worked as a 20

consulting engineer. Their son Greg became General Manger during the years 1990-2007 and daughter Joanne became Financial Officer in 2005. The Bar 5 staff now consists of Andreas Buschbeck, Farm Manager; Linda Lupton, Office Manager; Joanne Nolan-McEnery, Financial Officer; Luke Buschbeck, Herdsman; Matthew Buschbeck, Herdsman and Jeff Peters, Property Maintenance. “The Bar 5 operation has benefited from our community by employing local people, and purchasing goods and services from the surrounding communities,” states Carla. In 1990 the Nolans purchased Bar 5 Simmental Stock Farms in Brandon, Manitoba and amalgamated Harkaway with Bar 5. They continued to operate the two farms in Markdale and Brandon until 2001, when they held the complete dispersal of Manitoba’s Bar 5 herd. In 1999 the Nolans initiated the Bar 5 SA operation in South Africa and started breeding Fleckvieh Simmental by purchasing 5 cows. “We began importing embryos from South Africa and transplanting in Canada, and since 2001, Bar 5 has maintained operations in Markdale, Ontario and Colesburg, South Africa. With this current structure our herd has grown to 300 cows, as well as a large bull battery,” explains Carla. Carla has seen many changes in the Simmental industry over the years of her involvement. “The cross breeding ability of the Simmental animals, feedlots taking advantage of these cross bred animals and the downsizing of the frame scores of the Simmental while retaining the performance of our animals, are the most prominent changes.” Over the years many memories have been gathered and Carla said that, “One of my fondest memories of having Simmental cattle is our first show at the Chatsworth Fair (Ontario). Although our family was not very knowledgeable in 1977 about showing, we won some ribbons that day.” Carla has been actively involved in various Simmental Associations and is a familiar face at events across the country and around the world.

“We were one of the host farms in 2006 when the World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation Congress was held in Canada. Ron and I have had the opportunity to participate in several of these Congresses throughout the years.” She has served as President of the Simmental Bells, and is currently the treasurer and supply officer. “My first involvement with the Ontario Simmbells was at the Royal Winter Agriculture Fair in Toronto in the early eighties. I volunteered to help promote Simmentals in the booth, which at the time was a wooden frame with drapery, and later hauled in a horse trailer as our promotion booth.” Carla continues to make arrangements for the Simmental receptions at the Royal Winter Fair with the assistance of the Bells membership. “My fondest memory of being involved with the Bells is the pancake breakfasts that we served at the Simmental weekends at Markham, Ontario in the 80’s and 90’s. We would get together, rain or shine, and flip pancakes for the breeders and potential customers in an outdoor kitchen. What a lot of fun,” tells Carla. The Simmental Bells have promoted the Simmental breed by supporting the provincial associations at various functions, hosting fund raising events, selling promotional wear with the Simmental logo embroidered on them. “I would like to thank all who have participated over the years,” says Carla. “We enjoy getting together with women who have the same interest in our Simmental breed. Our numbers have dwindled over the years and we welcome new members to join us.” Carla has also been involved with the Ontario Simmental Association (OSA). “I became involved with the OSA by hosting meetings at our home when Ron was President for the years 1990-92,” says Carla. She currently sits on the OSA board of directors and served as President in 2003-2004. “The provincial association plays an important role in promoting

the Simmental Breed within our province,” says Carla. “We encourage fellow breeders to join their provincial associations. They promote the breed by advertising in local cattle magazines, hosting web sites to attract new breeders and to communicate with members. The OSA donates funds to provincial 4H clubs, Plowing Matches and Farms Shows. Our association is also a proud sponsor of the Young Simmental Association. Provincial Associations also play a very important role in creating marketing opportunities for their members. They have representation at various beef conferences, coordinates the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Simmental Show, helps in organizing breed sales and hosts socializing events such as the Annual General Meeting and picnics.” The Nolans are generous supporters of the Young Canadian Simmental Association and Garth Sweet Simmental Foundation, “We are strong believers in youth and research,” says Carla, “and are long time advertisers in the Simmental’ Country magazine. I’d like to congratulate the Simmental Country for a job well done,” says Carla, “It provides information regarding the CSA and its marketing and beef improvement programs.” Members utilize the magazine to advertise their business and genetics while keeping members informed on breeding, feeding and selling their animals. The Country is an attractive magazine with tremendous value.” Bar 5 Stock Farm holds annual Bull and Female Sales and in March 2013, they will be celebrating their 40th Annual Bull Sale. “I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the success of the Simmental breed in Canada since 1967.” Simmental Country would like to thank Carla Nolan for her decades of commitment and support for the Simmental Breed in Canada. Another exciting year with the Young Canadian Simmental Association CSA & YCSA Representatives at the 2012 AJSA National Classic I would like to take this opportunity to thank the CSA and the YCSA for awarding me the chance to attend the 2013 AJSA Simmental Classic in Lincoln, Nebraska. At the 2012 YCSA National Classic held in Truro, Nova Scotia, I was the champion overall aggregate. Growing up in the small town of Harmony, Nova Scotia, I have been showing Simmental cattle since I was five years old at local exhibitions. The 4H program and the YCSA have helped me become very interested in the Simmental breed. It is with great honor I will represent the National YCSA and travel to Nebraska with Krista Whalen from Quebec. Hello, my name is Krista Whalen and I am currently 15 years old. I live in Gould, Quebec, on my family farm where we raise purebred Hereford, Angus and Simmental cattle, along with a group of crossbred cows. I have been involved in 4H my whole life, along with my two other sisters and one brother. My parents come from a long line of 4H and junior events as well. I have been a YCSA member for only two years, but have also participated in the Hereford and Angus junior programs for some time. I would like to thank the Canadian Simmental Association for giving me the opportunity to attend the American Junior Simmental Association National Classic. I would also like to acknowledge Rosalyn Grusnick, as she was the Grand Champion YCSA Showperson at the 2012 YCSA National Classic. Young Canadian Simmental Association Classics Maritime YCSA host the 2012 National Classic The 2012 National YCSA Classic began in Truro, Nova Scotia with move in and registration on Thursday evening. This event had an excellent turnout of 44 members in attendance from across Canada and 75 head of cattle registered. Activities such as judging, herdsman and sire summary quizzes and a cattle evaluation clinic took place. Young Canadian Simmental Association Classics Saskatchewan Tiger Lily Classic

The Tiger Lily Classic began in Saskatchewan with a move in and registration on Wednesday, August 2. 23 members registered along with 30 head of cattle, which was a great turn out. The Champion purebred female was Ms BGS Daisy Duke shown by Toby Noble and the Reserve Champion purebred female was WPT Ms Sapphire shown by Tanner Oborowsky. The Champion bull calf was WPT Mr Red Zone 12Y shown by Tiffany Peters and the Reserve Champion bull calf was BGS Silent Lunker 14Z shown by Ryley Noble. The Champion Commercial female was shown by Colter Taylor and the Reserve Champion commercial female was Bar-A Sweet Thing shown by Wyatt Millar.

The first ever 2012 Quebec Junior Beef Show was held from July 6th to the 8th at the Brome County Fairgrounds in Brome, Quebec. This all breeds junior show featured many competitions such as scrapbooking, art, advertising and much more along with showmanship and conformation classes. Approximately 20 kids attended and exhibited 31 head of cattle. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Grand Champion Simmental female as well as Supreme Champion female was Greyledge Breathless exhibited by Lucas Rantz and the Reserve Champion Simmental female was SANE Win Garnette 205T. The Champion Simmental bull was Triara Chronicle 151Y shown by Allison Mastine. The Champion Showperson was Krista Whalen and the Reserve Champion Showperson was Laurie Noiseux.

Quebec Junior Beef Show

Ontario Trillium Classic The Ontario Trillium was held on July 27th and 28th in Dundalk, Ontario. 25 juniors participated and exhibited approximately 35 head of cattle. The Champion Showperson was Grant Milliner and the Reserve Champion Showperson was Brittany Barkley. The Grand Champion female was won by Kaitlyn Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neil showing Maplerose Kesha and the Reserve Champion female was won by Alexa Campbell showing Destiny Target Shandy. Champion bull calf was Hi-Tech Zodiac shown by Brittany Barkley and the Reserve Champion bull calf was Destiney Way Too Cool shown by Elicia Cann.

Alberta Wild Rose Classic The 2012 Wild Rose Classic began on Thursday evening with move in, registration and supper followed by a team scavenger hunt. A total of 18 YCSA members registered and in total there were 32 head of cattle at the grounds in Bashaw. Champion showperson was Haylea Jones and Reserve Champion showperson was Kimberly Biggelaar. Champion commercial female was Pixie shown by Hannah Gregoire and Reserve Champion commercial female was Little Red shown by Carissa Richardson. Champion bull calf was TSF Deuce 22Z shown by Cheyenne Klepper and Reserve Champion bull calf was Coops Eye Candy shown by Cooper Snider. Champion purebred female was JT Cherry Cola shown by Haylea Jones and Reserve Champion purebred female was GBF Zima 12Z shown by Garrett Biggelaar.

Manitoba Youth Beef Round Up The Manitoba Youth Beef Round Up began on Friday August 3rd and ran till the 5th. This is an all breeds show put on by the Round Up committee and this year, 11 Simmental juniors participated in the event that had approximately 60 youth in attendance. The Champion Simmental female was Swindon Nora shown by Justin Carvey and the Reserve Champion female was Swindon Sweet Sevens shown by Taylor Carvey.

have always said farmers make a lot of effort along with their veterinarian in selecting their yearly vaccination protocol. The vaccines cost money and effort is required to administer them. We must maximize the immune response to get maximum protection of our livestock insuring protection from disease. This is good from both a biosecurity standpoint as well as an economic one. Clinical disease such as scours, pneumonia outbreaks or abortions all affect our bottom line. This article will closely outline where vaccine failures happen. Often a small effort or preplanning and adhering to a few principles can assure you get maximum benefit from your vaccination program. Gone are the days when farmers only administered blackleg. This was a fairly tough vaccine where efficacy was fairly high, level of immunity high. In short, it was hard to muck it up unless the vaccine expired or was exposed to the elements. Nowadays with multiple vaccines given in any weather and with some being fragile, extra care absolutely must be taken. With multiple shots now given, it probably is first best to establish which diseases you are most concerned about and then establish which vaccines give you this combination with the least amount of shots. Multiple shots do increase the chances of mistakes happening. If multiple vaccines are given, I adhere to several principles which minimize chances of muck ups. First off, depending on the weather, have a cooler or Styrofoam box which prevents overheating in summer and more importantly freezing in winter. You can place ice packs in for the summer and warm water bottles in the winter. You know the saying about the weather changing so quickly so be prepared. Warm sunny days can turn into blustery winter days in a heartbeat, so an insulated container can save the day. Depending on how hot or cold it is even the syringe loaded with the vaccine needs to be protected. We ideally want it in the 5-15 C range before administration. Keep in mind it is going into an animal with a 38-39C (approx 100F) temp so warmer is better then cooler. If any freezing or crystallization, the vaccine is lost and must be disposed of. It is no use giving inactivated substandard vaccine when so much depends on it working properly. By storing in an insulated container, this also keeps the vaccine out of sunlight which is also a good thing. If more that one person is vaccinating, split the shots over both sides of the neck. Give subcutaneously wherever possible. It is absolutely imperative the automatic guns donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get mixed up half way through processing. With the majority of vaccines, now a 2 cc dosage, guns are often refilled at the same time and mix-ups can occur. As an example, if you were giving a blackleg vaccine (they often have formalin in the bacterin) and then refilled it with a 4-way modified live vaccine, even a very small amount of blackleg vaccine left would inactivate the viral vaccine. The next full syringe of 25 doses would be useless. To avoid this, I closely note the color of the vaccine plus I mark the syringe with the vaccine name. I keep the refill bottles together with the vaccine gun and if two or more shots 32

are given on the same side, make a definite separation on the table shelf where they are placed. Likewise separation on the table needs to be followed by separation at the site of injection. I recommend at least 10 cm distance (hand width) between injection sites and the farther the better. In order to follow up vaccine reaction if they occur, always give one vaccine for instance high on the neck the other low. The secondary site is behind the shoulder or elbow. Be cognisant of the times there is lots of backflow of vaccine or you go in and out and squirt vaccine in the air. If in doubt revaccinate right then. Monitor the usage to make sure the gun is dispensing the right amount, make sure air is out of the syringe and as always change bent, burred, dull or dirty needles. Vaccines reactions (lumps or swellings) are normal. What we want to avoid are infected sites or putting the vaccine intradermal (between the skin layers) or intramuscular if it is recommended subcutaneously. A number of vaccines can be given either subcutaneously or intramuscular so whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nice here if an attempted S.C. shots end up i.m. that is still okay. When cleansing syringes just use warm water; no soaps or disinfectants unless they are thoroughly washed and dried afterwards. With modified live vaccine, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mix up more than you are going to use in the next hour and discard unused product at the end of the day. If drawn out, sterilely killed vaccines and bacterins can be kept for a period (I use one week) and used up later. One must be cognisant of how the vaccine has been stored before you purchase it and on the way home. We send purchases home with ice packs in the summer and only use pharmaceutical suppliers we can trust. One fault in this supply chain can render vaccine inactive. Many producers bring in their cooler, if purchasing large quantities of vaccine, so this temperature integrity is maintained. When handling cattle try and be diligent and vaccinate everyone. With escapees, try your best to rerun them as they have not been treated. In order to develop an immune response, cattle must be healthy in good nutrition and as stress free as possible. The vaccine is only as protective as the response the animal can muster. This is another common reason vaccinating can fail to protect. Always watch for expiry dates. I had one I thought educated producer tell me he thought vaccines loose about 10% efficacy every year past expiry. This is the biggest misnomer I have ever heard. No wonder he had a blackleg outbreak using vaccine that had expired nine years previously. With so many different combinations of vaccines out there, make sure the diseases you want to protect are in the vaccines. Producers may say I thought everything was in the eight way vaccine. Vaccinate according to label instructions, have the cattle healthy and you can expect maximum protection. Vaccines form in my mind the most integral part of any biosecurity program. If you hold back on vaccinations for diseases in your area, eventually there will be consequences. Veterinarians will give you a list of vaccines from most critical to least and your decisions can be made on that.
