Fake Simmental!

M

AY CONTAIN! NON-GMO! GLUTEN FREE! ORGANIC! HORMONE FREE! We are surrounded by misleading labeling that advertises or promotes the products that we buy as consumers. Anything and everything seems to be used to sell us products that are often not regulated in any shape or form. It’s a “pet peeve” for many of us in agriculture but what does it have to do with Simmental?

Over the years many of us have seen ads for people selling non-registered bulls of every breed for a slightly discounted price. Recently I came across an “In Search Of” ad on social media looking for a bull of another breed and in it, the bull this person was searching for, was described as to the age, color and of course the price she was willing to pay. What followed the much lower than average price was that she didn’t require the bull “to be papered”! While it’s disappointing there are still commercial producers who have not figured out what a registration paper actually provides, that got me to thinking that this may be a good time to also remind all of us of what is attached to the registration paper when it is transferred to your bull buyer’s name.

A registration paper is more than a paper that just shows the animal’s name, birthdate, its performance and its ancestry. It is also a validation of the ownership being transferred to the purchaser’s name after the completion of the sale. With that comes the assurance that the breeder who sold it, is a member in good standing of the Canadian Simmental Association who is responsible for the regulatory control that the animal actually is who it is supposed to be; that it was raised by a recognized Simmental breeder; whether it is a Fullblood, Purebred or Percentage Simmental and also what other breeds may be in the pedigree. While the CSA does not DNA test every Simmental calf that is born for parentage prior to registration like some other breeds, we do require testing on all herd-sires and donor females and as well we do random tests on animals as they apply for registration into the Canadian Simmental registry or herd-book. That testing provides fairly good assurance of what the ancestry is of an animal.

Other value that is included in the registration and transfer process is the collection of phenotypic data that goes

into the genetic evaluation that is then expressed as a breeding value of the animal through its EPD’s. While some breeders claim to be confident in their ability to guesstimate meat quality and traits such as marbling, ribeye and back-fat, the registration paper triggers an official number generated from a genetic evaluation. This is an estimate, however, it is much more solid than something made up from a few minutes at the seller’s desk while punching numbers into their calculator until they get something that they think “looks good”.

The most common approach to register Simmental cattle is through the THE program. For a cost of $22.00 to enroll a cow, CSA members receive one registration and two transfers for the year. That $22.00 covers the cost of registering AND transferring the cow’s calf. The funds generated from the THE transaction is used to cover the costs of everything mentioned above PLUS the other programming done at the CSA such as promotion and marketing, genetic improvement, as well as the Young Canadian Simmental program. If a Simmental breeder isn’t willing to invest $22.00 into registering and transferring an animal to you, then what else will they not be providing with that “may contain or brown-bag bull”.

A new program that encourages the registration and transfer of Simmental cattle in Canada is the CSA’s Simmental CCIA approved RFID tag. This standard RFID tag comes with a special blue back button that has Canadian Simmental’s CCIA approved logo on it and identifies that the animal qualifies as being sired by a registered Simmental sire or dam. Only cattle producers who have Simmental cows registered in their name, or have had a Simmental bull recently transferred to them will qualify to purchase these tags.

There clearly is value in buying registered Simmental bulls which ensures that the animal is what it is presented as and also to maximize the genetic value that the Simmental breed has to offer. A bonus is the programs that it supports through the process which improve the Simmental breed and the beef industry through the CSA programming. The next time you are bull shopping and someone offers to “knock off a couple of hundred bucks” from the sale price of an unregistered bull, ask yourself if it’s really worth it.

The Better Half

Breed Improvement Co-ordinator for the Canadian Simmental Association f I want to make a good first impression on someone, I would probably choose to introduce them to my wife, or my better half. The same is true with cattle. When folks come to look at bulls or buy seedstock, you generally try to show them the cattle you are most proud of. It is highly unlikely that an operation would take their culls on the show trail in the fall.

Those below average animals are important, however, since they set the basis for comparison, allowing us to properly identify how far above average the others are. More importantly from a cow herd fertility perspective, reporting on all the animals allows us to more accurately assess fertility and breeding success of the cow herd.

Here is a bit of a simplified example of the same cow herd viewed two different ways.

In the first scenario, this cow herd has a 50% conception

and 50% weaning rate. In the second scenario, where all animals are reported, this jumps to 100% conception and 100% weaning rate. The difference made by complete reporting (even the below average cattle) makes a tremendous difference in how we view this cowherd.

In order to assist members with the process of complete reporting the CSA has developed THE Compliance reports that show animals that may be missing data at various stages. With life being what it is, it is easy to forget to enter a calf or miss recording a culling event or having a calf not make the chute at weaning, so the THE Compliance report is designed to help remind you in one, easy to access report of animals in your herd that may be missing some data.

The report shows only those females in the cow herd with missing data. This means you do not have to sort through your entire group of cows to identify those that may have missed some key information. In this example, ABC 123D does not have a calf reported. We do not know if she lost the calf, never conceived or the calf just came on a busy day and was not reported. THE Compliance reports provide an easy, one stop reminder to identify missing information and ensure that full reporting is done without having to sort through the entire cow herd.

Reports can be accessed/printed from the online system at any time. Paper only clients should receive reporting in their fall packages, post-weaning.

While we want to propagate and improve on Simmental genetics in the beef industry, complete data reporting is a key tool to help achieve that goal. The THE Compliance reports are a tool to help members do just that.

Nous sommes inondés par des étiquettes trompeuses servant à faire la publicité et la promotion de toutes sortes de produits de consommation. On semble employer toutes sortes de moyens pour nous vendre des produits issus d’aucune réglementation qui soit.

Pour plusieurs d’entre nous en agriculture, cela estune véritable bête noire, mais qu’en est-il au sujet de la race Simmental?

Au fil des ans, plusieurs d’entre nous avons déjà vu des annonces de personnes vendant à un prix légèrement inférieur des taureaux non enregistrés de différentes races. J’ai pris connaissance dernièrement d’une annonce dans la section “à la recherche de” d’un média social, laquelle mentionnait être à la recherche d’un taureau d’une autre race, et on y décrivait dans l’annonce l’âge du taureau recherché, sa couleur et, bien entendu, le prix que la personne voulait payer. Puis, après avoir mentionné ce prix bien inférieur au prix moyen du marché, elle n’avait pas besoin que le taureau « ait des papiers »! Bien que cela soit bien navrant de constater qu’il y a encore des producteurs commerciaux qui n’ont pas réalisé ce qu’un certificat d’enregistrement apporte, cela m’a fait penser qu’il était le temps de rappeler à tout le monde ce qui est attaché au certificat d’enregistrement d’un taureau transféré à votre nom.

Un certificat d’enregistrement est bien plus qu’un papier indiquant le nom de l’animal, sa date de naissance, ses performances et ses ancêtres. C’est également une validation de la propriété du taureau transféré à l’acheteur suite à une vente conclue. Et, avec cela, on obtient l’assurance que l’éleveur vendeur est un membre en règle de l’Association Simmental du Canada, laquelle est responsable du contrôle réglementaire de la validation de l’identité du taureau; c’est-à-dire qu’il a été élevé par un éleveur Simmental reconnu, qu’il possède le statut de “FullBlood”, pursang ou issu d’un pourcentage de sang Simmental, et enfin qu’il peut ou non posséder du sang d’autre race dans sa généalogie. Bien que l’ASC n’exige pas que comme certaines autres races que chaque veau né subisse un test d’ADN pour vérifier la parenté, nous exigeons toutefois que tous les taureaux utilisés en saillie naturelle et toutes lesdonneuses d’embryons soient testés, de même que nous procédons à un testage aléatoire d’un nombre d’animaux qui doivent être enregistrer dans le livre généalogique de l’Association Simmental du Canada. Cette procédure de testage nous fournit une assurance passablement bonne au sujet des ancêtres d’un animal.

Au niveau du processus d’enregistrement et de transfert de propriété d’un animal, on retrouve également la cueillette de données phénotypiques qui sont incorporées aux évaluations génétiques et qui sont par la suite exprimées sous forme de valeurs d’élevage ou EPD. Même si certains

éleveurs affirment qu’ils sont capables d’estimer eux-mêmes la qualité de la viande et des caractères tels que le persillage, la surface de l’œil-delonge et l’épaisseur de gras dorsal, le certificat d’enregistrement fournit des chiffres officiels générés à partir d’une évaluation génétique. Cela demeure un estimé, mais c’est encore beaucoup plus fiable qu’une quelconque évaluation produite sur le bureau du vendeur, alors qu’il tape des chiffres sur sa calculatrice jusqu’à temps d’obtenir quelque chose qui « parait bien ».

L’enregistrement des bovins Simmental au niveau du programme THE constitue la façon la plus courante d’enregistrer des bovins Simmental. Pour un coût d’enrôlement de 22.00 $ par vache, les membres de l’ASC peuvent ainsi enregistrer un veau et transférer deux sujets annuellement. Ce coût de 22.00 $ inclut l’enregistrement ET le transfert du veau de cette vache. Tous les fonds générés par les transactions au programme THE servant à couvrir les frais de tout ce qui a été mentionné précédemment, AINSI QUE les autres coûts des programmes effectués par l’ASC, tels que la promotion et le marketing, l’amélioration génétique, de même que le programme des Jeunes éleveurs Simmental du Canada. Si un éleveur Simmental n’est pas prêt à investir un montant de 22.00 $ envers l’enregistrement et le transfert d’un animal à votre nom, alors que peut-il bien être disposé à ne pas vous offrir avec ce « peut contenir ou taureau sorti d’un sac magique ».

L’ASC s’occupe également d’un autre programme encourageant l’enregistrement et le transfert des bovins Simmental au Canada par l’emploi des étiquettes d’oreille RFID approuvées par l’ACIB (ATQ). Ces étiquettes RFID courantes possèdent un bouton sur l’arrière de couleur bleue, incluant le logodes Simmental canadiens approuvé par l’ACIB, lequel vient confirmer que l’animal est issu soit d’un taureau ou d’une vache enregistrée de race Simmental. Les producteurs bovins ayant des vaches Simmental enregistrées à leur nom ou qui ont eu dernièrement un taureau Simmental transféré à leur nom sont les seuls producteurs pouvant se procurer ces étiquettes.

L’achat de taureaux enregistrés Simmental offre certainement une valeur ajoutée, car cela nous assure que l’animal est bien ce qu’il est présenté être, et cela nous permet également de maximiser la valeur génétique offerte par la race Simmental. En prime, vous supportez les programmes qui font en sorte que la race Simmental puisse s’améliorer au bénéfice de l’industrie bovine. La prochaine fois que vous magasinerez l’achat d’un taureau et que quelqu’un vous offrira de baisser le prix demandé de quelques centaines de dollars si le taureau n’est pas enregistré, demandez-vous si cela en vaut vraiment la peine.

YCSA Alumni Story Andrew Godfrey:

Farm skills serve him well in

life and career The view of the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill from his downtown Ottawa office building is quite different and quite a distance from the potato fields and pastures Andrew Godfrey grew up with as a kid on the Prince Edward Island family farm.

But Godfrey says there are plenty of things he learned during his years of raising, showing and maintaining the purebred records for Simmental cattle that help him in his demanding corporate law practice today. The details are different, but many of the same skills still apply.

“There was a lot of advance planning and details to attend to and at times some headaches that come with running a large event in a geographic location several hours from PEI by car, but it was a great learning experience. I had the chance to apply those skills again in 2006 when I, along with the Hicks sisters (Dana and Carla) and a

group of volunteers planned and ran the youth component of the World Simmental Congress held at the Calgary Stampede.

Today I may not be organizing a national or global event, but many of those same skills still apply when I’m planning the closing of a large international transaction. Learning to deal with problems and logistics of such events 20 years ago are definitely an example of transferable skills that help me in work and life today.”

Also, when he was 18 he had his first experience of sitting at a boardroom table as a director of the Young Canadian Simmental Association and later as a director of the Canadian Simmental Association. Again, they were different boards and different businesses back then, but it all provided experience and paved the way for regularly advising boards of directors later in life.

While Godfrey deals mostly with corporate clients today helping to facilitate mergers and acquisitions of varying complexities in all regions of the country, he says his farm roots are never too far from his mind.

He is proud of a photo on his office wall that shows the members of his wedding party gathered around a tractor with one of the barns at the family’s Frey Lawny Farms in the background.

Godfrey attended the University of New Brunswick Law School and was first called to the Prince Edward Island bar in 2006. He was still a member of the Canadian Simmental Association board at that time and still heavily involved with herd-sire 9

Godfrey says he was raised on a typical PEI farm, and genetic selection while looking after registrations and paperwork for purebred cattle on the family farm. it produced a combination of potatoes, cereal crops, In 2008 he moved to Ontario, was called to the Ontario soybeans, silage and hay in rotation and beef cattle bar and joined an international law firm in Ottawa. He as well. was soon to be married and it wasn’t long before he and his wife started a family. Life got busy and then busier. He and his wife, Claire Woodside, now have three children - Elliot, 5, Grace, 3 and Henry, eight months.

“I had this idea at one time that I could be a lawyer who also had purebred cattle,” says Godfrey. “But I realized that was unrealistic. I was putting in a lot of hours at work, there was also home life and I knew that to properly raise cattle it also requires time and management. Working in downtown Ottawa, I realized I couldn’t do both.”

In 2010 to 2011 his term on the Canadian Simmental Board ended and as it turned out the timing was right that a younger brother, Michael, was returning to the family farm and took the lead on the management of the herd.

While Andrew is not involved with the family farm or beef industry on a daily basis, he says he and his wife make a point of getting their three young children back to the farm on PEI as much as possible so they can connect with their roots and gain an understanding of the agriculture industry.

Godfrey was born and raised on the family farm at Meadow Bank, PEI (not far from Charlottetown) and was the oldest of three sons of Don and June Godfrey. One brother, Robert, is executive director of the PEI Federation of Agriculture, while the youngest brother, Michael, is actively involved in the family’s Frey Lawny Farms.

“My grandfather, Harold Godfrey, ran Hereford cattle at one time and as I understand he was looking for a beef breed with a bit more size,” says Godfrey.

“It was probably early in the 1980’s he bought the first Simmental cattle and never looked back.” The farm carried on developing a small purebred Simmental herd and also operates a feedlot of primarily Simmental cattle.

“I think I was learning to lead a Simmental calf around the show ring before I was even old enough to join 4-H” says Godfrey. He was seven or eight years old when he got his first Simmental calf. “We always showed cattle at various events around the Maritimes and Eastern Canada,” he says, “and many times we had cattle at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, both in open classes as well in 4-H events.”

Godfrey was a long-time 4-H beef club member being involved with the organization from age nine to 21, “or whatever age they are required to kick you out,” he says jokingly. But also in the early years he became involved with the YCSA program.

“I believe it was around 1990, “I believe it I was probably about 10, when I first connected with the YCSA,” was around he says. When Godfrey’s grandfather died in 1998, Andrew took on the duties of looking after herd registration and paperwork and he carried on with those responsibilities through university and into law school. “Even in my third year of law school, I was still looking after herd registrations, I was on the CSA board, still involved with the farm as much as I could be,” he says. Once he made the move to Ottawa and career and family demands increased, he had to step back from farm duties.

He says farm life in general and being involved with YCSA more specifically, have provided him with valuable career and life skills.

“One of the things you learn growing up on a farm is a strong work ethic,” says Godfrey. “You know you have to put in the time and effort to get the work done.”

The benefits of being involved with 4-H as well as YCSA include learning the structure and operation of organizations, being accountable and learning about responsibility. “Probably one of the most important benefits is learning how to work with and communicate with other people,” says Godfrey. “You build networks and make friends which is important.

As I travelled across the country you learn not only about geography but also about regional differences.

Life in Calgary is different in many respects than in Swift Current, than it is in Brandon, or than it is in Halifax and that’s all valuable knowledge you carry into your career. “Being involved with YCSA helps you learn so many valuable and useful skills in terms of organizations and working with people and that’s all “The classics aren’t just about showing cattle,” says easily transferable into whatever career you pursue.”

Godfrey. “Young people have an opportunity to learn about beef genetics, how to use EPD’s, herd management, herd health and sales and marketing, for example. The program isn’t just about being a halter jockey, it is learning to improve beef management skills, but also to be a better citizen, too.”

Although Godfrey enjoyed farming and the beef industry, he was also a pretty good student at school.

“Both my grandfather and dad told me, since I was a good student, that perhaps I should see where that led me,” says Godfrey. “And along with being a farmer from local, to regional and eventually to the National YCSA level.

Godfrey was president of the Maritime YCSA in the mid to late 1990’s, was a member of the YCSA National Board and eventually became National YCSA President.

“Being involved at regional and national levels was a tremendous experience,” he says. He was able to travel to all parts of the country, meet many other young people involved with the Simmental breed and Canadian beef industry. “You meet people and you establish friendships that are with you your whole life,” he says.

One of the major achievements during his years as National YCSA President was to be involved as the organization formalized its constitution and bylaws.

“One of the steps we felt was important was to help define and restructure the YCSA program and regional classics,” says Godfrey. Working with the Canadian Simmental Association, one objective was to provide consistency in the structure and programing available at the regional classics across the country.

i je veux faire une bonne impression lors d’une première rencontre avec quelqu’un, je vais probablement choisir de lui présenter mon épouse, soit ma meilleure moitié.

La même règle s’applique aux bovins.Quand des personnes viennent voir vos taureaux ou acheter des sujets de race pure, en général vous allez leur montrer les bovins pour lesquels vous êtes le plus fier. Il est presque certain qu’un élevage donné ne montrerait jamais ses sujets de réforme sur le circuit des expositions de l’automne.

Toutefois, ces animaux classés en-dessous de la moyenne sont importants car ils viennent déterminer la base de comparaison pour un groupe donné, nous permettant alors d’identifier correctement la supériorité des autres sujets par rapport à la moyenne. De manière encore plus importante, du point de vue de la fertilité du troupeau, ladéclaration de tous les animaux nous permet d’estimer plus précisément la fertilité et le taux de réussite des saillies dans un troupeau de vaches.

Voici de façon imagée un exemple simplifié du même troupeau de vaches, mais vu de deux manières différentes.

Afin d’appuyer les membres dans le processus conduisant à la déclaration complète de leurs données, l’ASC a développé des rapports de conformité au programme THE, lesquels identifient les sujets avec des données manquantes à l’un ou l’autre des stades de production. La vie étant ce qu’elle est, il est facile d’oublier d’entrer un veau ou bien d’oublier de déclarer une décision de réforme, ou encore d’avoir un veau n’ayant pas été pesé au sevrage. Ainsi, le rapport de conformité de THE a été conçu afin de vous rappeler d’une façon simple de porter une attention aux animaux de votre troupeau pour lesquels il manque des données.

Un exemple de ce rapport est présenté ici…

Ce rapport présente uniquement les femelles du troupeau pour lesquelles des données sont manquantes. Cela signifie donc que vous n’avez pas à vérifiertout votre groupe de vaches pour identifier celles ayant des données importantes manquantes. Dans cet exemple, aucun veau n’a été déclaré pour la vache ABC 123 D.On ne sait pas si elle a perdu son veau, ou si elle n’était pas gestante, ou encore si le veau est né durant une journée très occupée et qu’on avait oublié de le déclarer.

Les rapports de conformité au programme THE constitue une manière facile et un rappel pour l’éleveur qui peut ainsi identifier rapidement les informations manquantes, puis il peut s’assurer que toutes ses données sont déclarées sans qu’il ait à vérifier tout son troupeau.

Ces rapports sont disponibles en tout temps et peuvent être imprimés directement à partir du service en ligne. Les éleveurs qui reçoivent uniquement des documents sous forme papier devraient recevoir ces rapports en même temps que leurs documents de post-sevrage à venir cet automne.

lease read this article and pass it on to a producer you know whom seldom uses a veterinarian as they are the main group to benefit greatly from some of the examples in this article. There is apprehension by both the producers and the veterinarians about the upcoming changes to the new antimicrobial regulations. This legislation has passed, so is coming and has already started, so best to ready ourselves. Please keep in mind your veterinarian is not the bad guy here and the veterinarian will need to establish a VCPR (veterinary client patient relationship) with your farm if one is not already established. The vast majority of you are already doing this and will see very little change as the veterinary clinic has a medical record of your herd, protocols established and prescribes and dispenses according to the rules. All of the new antimicrobials and painkillers that have come onto the market in the past many years are prescription products already.

The small minority of you whom seldom use a veterinarian except for obstetrical cases or prolapses and have purchased most of your former supplies and medications elsewhere is whom this article really applies to. The non-prescription products such as dewormers, colostrum substitutes, electrolytes and some vaccines will still be available at the same outlets as they always have such as the UFA, CO-OP’s, feed supply stores or Peavey Marts.This article hopefully will illustrate by example a pile of good that will come out of these changes for you.

The two main injectable types of antimicrobials no longer available without prescription on December 1, 2018 are the penicillins and tetracyclines. They have always been available at the veterinary clinics before but did not require a prescription whereas now they will. I would say in clinical large animal practice over the years these two products have been used less and less. There have been more specific antibiotics used for things like respiratory disease.

Veterinarians and their staff will also educate you on things like proper injection technique, dosage or withdrawal times. There are also times when your cattle are examined that antimicrobials will not be used such as with many lamenesses, injuries or viral conditions.

Other non antimicrobial products may be prescribed.

By having these clinical cases examined the local veterinarian can get an understanding of what is going on in your herd. If they are out on your farm, a herd visit should be done establishing vaccination and parasite management protocols. Some clinics may even have protocol books to illustrate common disease conditions as well as drugs commonly used and their withdrawal times. The withdrawal times, species approved for, dosage and contraindications are always listed on the label. These are very important facts that your veterinarian knows and can help you with. I always like dosage, route of administration and meat or milk withdrawal charts. Keep in mind if the dosage is exceeded or the weight is overestimated and more product is given, the withdrawal time will automatically increase.

Products given at different dosages or for species not indicated on the label also require a prescription. Unlike human medicine though, the examination may apply to the group of cattle or for instance, if further pneumonias come along they can be treated by you just like the first one you had examined that season.

Many may have already noticed the scour bolus products which contained antibiotic combinations as well as other things have pretty much gone off the shelves. Again you will find by working with your veterinarian they can help you greatly by not only setting up preventative programs, but by changing treatments. Most scours cases are caused by viruses or protozoa so most antibiotics are ineffective.

You will find your veterinarian may prescribe things like electrolytes, probiotics or things like activated charcoal for scours cases.

The new changes should encourage a working relationship with your veterinarian. Programs like the BSE program for autopsies of mature (greater than 30 months) cows will get the veterinarian on your farm and the herd visit can be worked in establishing a VCPR. You will be brought up to date on the latest treatments for pain control, parasite control and vaccination for the preventable diseases you may find on your farm.

Most clinics have haul in facilities so the sick calf, cow or bull can be transported in. With each clinical examination or autopsy, it is a look into the health and productivity of your herd. Veterinarians use these cases to discover preventative measures through nutrition, vaccinology, parasite control, etc. There is so much information that can be gleaned by the history or clinical signs of the case that will be asked of you.

Routine procedures such as pregnancy checking, breeding soundness exams, nutritional or growth promotion or stress free handling all have a place and will lead to economic returns. The beef code of practice really illustrates good animal welfare practices and the further usage of pain control where necessary. Welcome this change and be proactive in your approach. The requirements are things you should be doing and are essentially law. Veterinarians are dedicated individuals to the health, welfare and economic sustainability of your herds. They are current in all matters regarding diagnosis or treatment of disease. They want the best from an animal welfare perspective for their cattle.

These changes we are seeing will help lead to less reliance on antimicrobials and a more preventative approach to disease. Low stress livestock handling is also being taught and demonstrated as another method to reduce sickness and disease and thus not relying on antimicrobials as much. My guess is the December 1, 2018 deadline on all antimicrobials requiring a prescription will in the long run make our cattle herds healthier.With prudent and selective use of antimicrobials where necessary and utilizing other preventative measures such as vaccinations, stress free weaning or early detection of disease under the care of your veterinarian the cattle industry will get much stronger.

I

am pleased to be the new advertising representative for Simmental Country magazine and with this first issue I want to introduce myself and tell you a bit about my background and how my real-world experience should be a benefit in assisting you with your marketing plans.

My entire life has centered around agriculture and particularly the beef cattle and meat animal business. Registered Shorthorns and purebred Hampshire hogs were raised on our family farm in southern Minnesota where in the early 1970’s we also were one of the early day Limousin cattle breeders in North America and still have a herd going today, almost 50 years later. Of course 4-H and FFA activities involved the whole family year round exhibiting cattle, pigs and market lambs around the midwest. I was also fortunate to be elected President of the North American Limousin Junior Association during the early years of its formation and growth. While earning a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Animal Science at the University of Minnesota, I was on the Meats, General Livestock and Meat Animal Evaluation teams, as well as being involved with the Block and Bridle Club and Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.

After graduation I accepted a fieldmen’s position with an all-breed monthly livestock publication headquartered in Calgary, Alberta selling advertising and writing feature articles which gave me a well-rounded view of several breeds and crosses of cattle across Canada.

In my second year there, I was promoted to Editor of the company’s national Limousin cattle publication, Limousin Leader, which made me the youngest editor of a Canadian national breed magazine ever. In year five of managing this publication’s growth, I purchased the magazine, becoming editor/ publisher and along with wife, Rhonda, we ran this magazine for over 20 years until BSE hit Canada and devastated so many things in the beef industry.

Through several cattle price cycle swings over more than two decades, I travelled across Canada and the USA working with seedstock cattlemen of all kinds in marketing their product through the pages of this national breed magazine.

At our current family ranch near Airdrie, Alberta, Rhonda and our two children, Brandon and Kate, have operated a modest sized registered cattle operation. Limousin, Angus and Simmental genetics are utilized and we all enjoy taking part in the day to day work. Brandon has started up his own business designing and fabricating livestock equipment and Kate begins her career as a teacher this fall. Rhonda also works full time at Soderglen Ranch in several areas of record keeping and administration.

The combination of my education, practical beef cattle production and marketing experience, plus years of livestock publication work has laid the foundation of knowledge which should allow me to offer plenty of tried and true ideas and guidance to you in the Simmental world. I look forward to being involved with each and every one of you, large or small herd, new or experienced member, in your marketing plans through the years ahead.

Getting set up in this new role of mine has been fun and interesting as the CSA staff at the Calgary office have certainly been friendly and helpful, thank you. My first outing on board at the CSA was at the ASA Field Day where I enjoyed meeting lots of new people and I know the upcoming CSA General Meeting at Olds in August will be another great chance to meet more of you from across the country too. I look forward to visiting with all of you in the future and please contact me with any events you have coming up that we can relay on to our readers or to discuss your advertising plans.

I

recently attended a community picnic and annual meeting in our area and although the weather wasn’t perfect for a great attendance, the turn out that evening was disappointing. Some of us who were in attendance started reflecting on how over the years engagement in the community and other associations as a whole has dissipated. It was disheartening that night for the committee that went to the work of preparing for the event.

Breed Associations, like community clubs, hockey clubs etc. rely on volunteers to step up and be elected as a director and for members to be engaged in the activities of the association or club. The Provincial Simmental Associations as well as the Canadian Simmental Association require volunteers to commit to help direct the breed. It seems to me that in the last few years there have been less people who have stepped forward to do this. I know that in Manitoba the provincial board currently has one vacancy because no one has stepped up to fill the position.

The biggest reason I hear for people not volunteering is the time commitment. I understand that, because everyone has busy lives, but that is the same as it was in the past. So let’s dig into this a little deeper.

Firstly what is a volunteer? A quick google search provides us with this “a volunteer is a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task”.

We know that everyone is busy and it is hard to find the time to volunteer but I feel that the benefits far outweigh the cost of your time. The biggest benefit is growing your list of friends and contacts. It also helps you with your self-confidence and your ability to meet and speak with new people. Junior members who volunteer can learn a skill set that will put them ahead of the competition in their future years. Learning to work on a team with other people and being able to list volunteer tasks that they have completed will put them way ahead on a scholarship or job application.

If you are really constrained for time, consider starting with a small commitment and work from there. A good example would be at a Simmental show in your area. Offer to help run the scales before the show or check tattoos and registrations on the cattle entered or help line up the cattle on show day. It would only take a couple of hours of your time but would greatly help out the larger committee putting on the show. You will not have invested a lot of time and likely met some new people and had some laughs. If we don’t step up to help out the ones doing

the jobs now they will get burnt out and quit. This is not good for any association as going forward we will lose some valuable people to mentor the group coming behind them.

If the timing for you to volunteer is not right, at the very least become engaged in your breed. Take the time to show up at local fairs, field days, tours or sales. This again is a chance to expand your contact list and promote your program and your breed. Spend some time at a local Young Canadian Simmental show. You will be blown away by the enthusiasm and abilities of these young individuals. If you have never been to a YCS event before you will also see that it is much more than a cattle show. There are competitions for sales talk, judging, team fitting, livestock knowledge and marketing just to name a few. Lastly, attend your Provincial or National Annual General Meeting.

These meetings are a good chance for you to discuss with your peers what direction you would like the breed to go. As you join in the conversation with fellow breeders and volunteers, keep it positive, don’t be a whiner. If there is something happening that you don’t like, explain why and give an alternative example of how it could have been done. I was at a function last year where an individual complained about how poorly everything was run.

They did not say how it could have been done better they just complained about it. I believe that individual has never lifted a finger to help plan or run any event, they just provided negative criticism.

Our children watch everything we do and in most cases follow how we do things. If you look around your breed and communities you will find that the parents who were engaged are the ones whose children are now involved with the leadership of their breeds or communities.

The Simmental breed is well respected in the livestock industry right now. Become engaged in your breed again, get the passion fired up in the next generation and there is no telling how far we can go ahead in the next few years.

Annual General Meeting

The SSA 48th Annual General Meeting was held June 19, 2018 in Estevan, SK. The day kicked off with a golf tournament at Woodlawn Golf Course in Estevan. Following some great shots, some not-so-good shots and visiting, the crowd moved to R Plus Simmentals. After touring a few of Marlin’s pastures we were treated to an excellent prime rib supper. The SSA Annual Meeting was held with a great turnout for the meeting. Lyle Forden and Kirsten Fornwald let their names stand for re-election. Thank you to Ryan Lundberg and Donna Asher for their time, dedication and countless hours to the Sask Simmental Association as they retire from the SSA Board and wish them well in the future. New directors Lee Stilborn and Lane Scherger were elected to the SSA Board - welcome to the team. Thank you to everyone that attended the meeting and to R Plus Simmentals, the LeBlanc family, for hosting!
