For those in areas affected by drought and calves. The pressure applies to the “kill cow” market as feed shortages, “don’t say whoa when you’re in a hole!” D-1 cows are lower than last year and shelly cows out of It is a great time to look at your cow herd….A real arid areas are under pressure. The warmer temperatures good look at age, pregnancy, productivity, temperament, and bright sunny skies of late have allowed the harvest soundness and udders…they eat the same amount as top and corn silage operations to be nearly completed. For those who background their lighter calves, forecast for the next few days should allow these tasks with tight feed stocks, take them to town this fall…look at to be completed, which will help both feeder and bred June futures. Most importantly, start thinking about your cow markets as the feed and straw piles are replenished. 2020 calf crop, as much of that is determined by your The warm weather has also dried up muddy pens left breeding intentions when selecting your next sire or sires. behind by the snow, making producers more eager to fill The cattle industry is a great life and feeds the world… those pens. for Halloween, I think I will dress up as a cowboy! The dry conditions are not limited to Canada. Australia has suffered a year long drought; parts of Europe are very short of moisture and half of the cattle producing areas in the United States are in the same predicament, causing inventories to tighten. The climate has forced producers

ith 4 generations of producing purebred Hereford and Angus cattle behind us, we have always strived for two things. Consistency and value. We expect our cattle to work in the river hills here at home, and are confident when they land in your pasture they will continue to work for you, and will add value to both your calf crop and your replacement females. We have selected and bred for low birth weights and calving ease, with above average performance from the beginning. There are no excuses or favorites, and every cow is scored annually on her feet, udder, and body composition, and if we cull the mother, the calf goes as well. With this approach, we are confident we can provide consistent quality that we are proud to put our name behind. As I write this, we are just weeks short of youngsters celebrating Halloween. This year, Mother Nature should dress up in a costume as she has been playing tricks on us all fall. Our first sales conducted were in high humidex values in Eastern Canada, while some parts of Western Canada laid under a blanket of snow. Mother Nature’s “trick or treat” adventures started in mid-summer and continued to the present day, as for the past week we have had a much needed “Indian Summer.”
to put their replacement heifers on feed. Certainly, the increased slaughter of cows will temporarily add to the volume of lower cuts available but only for a short tenure and a plus in the big picture.
So as you read this, one might think of negativity….don’t! The USMCA agreement gives us unlimited stability, as the USA is our biggest trading partner and our leading importer of Canadian beef, live or on the hook. The latest agreement of Canadian cattle is access to the Philippines; Throughout this weather pattern, the cattle market has an estimated eight million dollars in added export market been strong yet a little under pressure lately, due to the for Canadian product. Those who have sold their calves brokers were besieged by calls, as crops lay in wet swaths have a big cheque and look to tax savings…so there is good or under snow. Summer Breeze Shorty was busy saddling his bay gelding Dandy, one late spring day, when he heard a vehicle coming up the hill near the ranch’s big open barn. He was slipping the headstall over Dandy’s ears when he saw a van slow at the end of the barn. The van passed the barn, stopped, then reversed to the barn and stopped.
“My llama. He guards my sheep and goats.”
Shorty picked up the reins and walked towards the van, just as the driver entered the barn. Shorty looked up and saw an older lady standing in the doorway. She had a tangled mess of long mousy brown hair that was highlighted with grey. She was wearing a long dress and sandals and had apparently burned her last bra.
“They are very loyal and very protective…” Summer seemed a little hurt by Shorty’s assessment of Larry.
“Good morning sir, can you tell me where I can find Shorty?” “That depends on who’s asking lady.” Shorty walked right by what he surmised was a hippy chick. He stopped on the road’s edge, swung the left stirrup onto the saddle’s seat and tightened the cinch. “Oh, I am sorry…. I am Summer Breize. Breize with an i…” she added, like Shorty should care. “I live on the ranch by the bridge, the one with the goats and sheep.” “Of course you do,” Shorty was ready to go now. His dog, Mike, was running first up the road, then down, waiting to see where they were headed. Shorty looked at Summer, decided that she was probably harmless enough, and admitted that he was Shorty. “Whata ya need?” “I need help with Larry.” Shorty looked over at his distraction. Her name may be Summer Breize, but she looked like she may have been involved with the odd winter storm. “Well… I ain’t no marriage counselor there Summer. I can’t help ya.” “No, no Shorty, Larry isn’t my old man, Larry is my llama.” “Your what?”
“How the hell does he do that? Isn’t a llama one of them long necked ugly bastards from South America? They sure as hell don’t look that scary or that smart for that matter.”
“If he is so loyal and protective, why do you need me?” Shorty had driven by Summer’s ‘ranch’ on several occasions. It was about 10 acres and there wasn’t twenty feet of decent fence on the entire place. Larry didn’t have to be a Bolivian rocket scientist to get out of the ‘ranch’. “What do you want with me?” “Len told me that if anyone could get Larry back, you could.” “Son of a bitch.” “I beg your pardon Shorty?” Shorty could just see Len Rivers as he drove home. He would be laughing his guts out at the thought of Shorty either refusing to help Summer or better yet herding a llama. Len knew damn well that Shorty would try and help. “Well Summer, I gotta move this bunch of cows to the spring range this morning, and it is only a mile or so further to your place, so I will give you a hand this afternoon.” “Oh, thank you! Thank you so much Shorty!” Shorty was still shaking his head as the van chugged back down the road. He was not sure what he had gotten into, but llamas are domesticated, so how hard can it be? It was just after 1 PM when Shorty drove the last few cows through the gate into the spring pasture. He walked the horse over to the nearby
Today’s Angus Advantage 72
creek, loosened the cinch, and watched Dandy and Mike have a drink. Shorty sat on a rock at the creek’s edge and ate his sandwich, while he waited for everything to mother up before he left. He considered standing Summer up, but he knew he couldn’t do that…. he had promised her. Shorty satisfied himself that all was well with the newly relocated cattle, so he tightened the cinch and pointed Dandy to the road. Now Dandy had two speeds, one going away from the barn and another, much faster speed going back to the barn. He was ready for home, so when Shorty turned him toward Summer’s ‘ranch,’ he was reluctant to cooperate, almost as reluctant as his pilot. Shorty, Dandy and Mike rounded the corner just above Summer’s place a while later. Shorty looked off to his right and there stood Larry. He was in the middle of Len’s hayfield and when he sensed that he had company, he raised his head and turned his body to face the three bodies on the road. He was a nasty looking little beast, his body covered with matted, dry looking hair, mostly dark brown with some dirty white patches. His tiny little head was pointed right at Shorty and he was giving Shorty his best stink eye. As Shorty rode towards the gate into Summer’s yard, Larry pivoted clockwise, never taking his eye off Shorty. Summer met Shorty at her gate. “Oh, thank God you followed through Shorty. Poor Larry looks scared to death!” “Really? He looks like an arrogant prick to me. Is he halter broke or anything?” “Oh yeah! This is his halter, he is just hard to catch.” Summer showed Shorty a pale red llama halter with an extra long lead shank attached. “He usually comes to grain….”
That was what Mike waited for, not just today but every day. Mike lowered himself to the ground and started to creep towards the llama. Larry never took his eye off the dog, and as Mike crept closer, Larry bowed his neck and lobbed a big llama goober at Mike. The llama spit stopped Mike in his tracks. He looked back at Shorty as if to say “What the hell.” “Mike come here.” It was time to change things up. Shorty lifted the lariat from his saddle and shook out a loop. Larry looked like he was smiling. Mike was pissed off. This time, Shorty and Mike walked towards Larry. “Mike…down, stay!” Mike dropped to the ground. Shorty reined Dandy to his left and walked towards Larry. Larry hadn’t expected this, his ears flashed back and forth and his head snapped between the dog in the grass and the horse and rider walking away. Shorty was in position. “Mike…get him outa here!” Mike sprang into action. As the dog rushed the llama, Larry reared his head back and Shorty dropped the loop over the llama’s head. That is where things went sideways. Shorty expected Larry to pull back, instead he charged the horse. Shorty dallied up and Larry raced past Dandy, spitting at whatever he could. Larry hit the end of the rope at full speed, flipping him on his side. Dandy squared up, now fully engaged on what was going on. To Shorty’s surprise, Larry didn’t fight the rope, instead he just got up and stood there. Shorty gave him some slack and Larry didn’t move. It was then that Shorty noticed Summer coming up behind him. “Larry! Enough!” Summer sounded a little pissed. Larry relaxed as Summer approached and slipped the halter over his head.
“Well let’s see what happens.” Shorty turned Dandy into Len’s hayfield and circled to the left. His plan was to get behind Larry, so that Larry could be moved towards the gate and then home. The problem with the plan was that Larry continued to pivot as Shorty circled him, so that Larry was always facing him. Shorty pulled up when he reached the far side of the field. Larry was facing him, ears forward and eyes peeled.
“I will take the rope off and give it back to you Shorty”
Shorty started towards Larry, fully expecting Larry to back down and wander away from the horse and rider. That didn’t happen. Larry just stared. Shorty pulled up.
“Thank you so much Shorty. What do I owe you?”
“Mike…get him outa here!”
Shorty turned Dandy towards the road and Dandy put ‘er in road gear. They would be home in no time and not a moment too soon.
“No! No... Summer you can keep it, give it to Len and he can help next time.” “You sure?” “Positive” “Nothin’ Summer. My Mom always said that experience is priceless.”
Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia. After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in addition to all major livestock shows, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Canadian Western Agribition, and all major National Junior shows in the summer months. Grant and Lauralee Rolston reside in Vulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.”

ver the last few years several herds have been affected with grass tetany in our area. These herds will often have multiples cases in short order. Once clinical signs occur and cattle go down chances of recovery are very poor, so treatment wise they are a true emergency. Early in the course of the disease treatment is very successful and your veterinarian will initiate steps to prevent further cases. This article will discuss clinical signs, treatment administered by your veterinarian and most importantly steps to prevent this oftenfatal syndrome caused by a magnesium deficiency.
O
In a classic case of grass tetany, cattle (especially mature cows) become weak, staggery, go down and develop tetanic convulsive fits. Paddling with the front feet and snapping of the eyelids can also occur with heavy breathing and foaming at the mouth. When your veterinarian examines affected cattle they often find a very high heart rate and potentially elevated temperature from all the hard work the muscles are doing. Not much else is found and since the cow is down, veterinarians often administer a combination of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium much the same as one would treat a milk fever, as these three minerals together or in combination may be low enough to cause a downer cow. Most clinics are now set up to do in house blood work so many veterinarians will often grab a blood sample before they begin to check for the levels of these minerals. We often see magnesium and calcium low together. Occasionally we look for high potassium, another macromineral, as it can lead to a secondary grass tetany. The real problem with grass tetany is it generally comes on very suddenly without warning and death can be very sudden. Post mortems show very little other than hemorrhages on the heart and often leaves the veterinarians scratching their heads unless clinical signs are seen. Treatment initiated before they go down or just as they go down is often successful. If down for a time, treatment, although it may reverse some signs, cattle seldom get up. So as the producer, a suddenly down cow is really a veterinary emergency. The combination Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium products are often given by slow intravenous injection and more can be given subcutaneously or intraperitoneally. Your veterinarian when giving it intravenously will often listen to the heart so if problems occur administration can be quickly slowed down or stopped. If one cow is magnesium deficient it is not uncommon for more cases to develop rapidly and one must assume the whole herd could be borderline deficient. In almost all cases I have seen mineral feeding has been sporadic to non-existent for the past year. Magnesium is what you call a macromineral along with the likes of calcium and phosphorus. These deficiencies may be a long time coming. Stresses like weather changes, starvation for even 24 hours, heavy pregnancy or milk loss
from sucking by well doing calves will lead to deficiencies. In a group of cows, the lactating ones are usually first affected. Changes to lush green pastures coupled with inclement weather can also precipitate an outbreak (lush grass lowers the magnesium level). I have seen a group of well doing heifers on a sound mineral program that were starved for 24 hours to facilitate spaying have an outbreak when the weather turned inclement. Not only do we want to treat clinical cases when they occur, we want to prevent further cases from developing by getting the much needed magnesium into them. Force feeding or drenching with magnesium oxide may prevent further cases, if along with this, we start supplementing with a good mineral program containing magnesium. Good trace minerals will have macro minerals such as calcium, phosphorus and magnesium as well as many micro minerals such as copper and zinc. Some producers are mislead by terms such as tracemineralized salt, which is primarily microminerals with mainly salt to enhance consumption. The issue is the macrominerals are totally absent in these combinations. These products are much cheaper which is why they are purchased in the first place. When you purchase minerals, make sure and read the label. All three cause downer cows but most definitely, the most serious of these deficiencies in beef cattle is magnesium. A lot of beef downer cows when the blood is analyzed it may be a combination of the three. You can see your mineral program is absolutely key to preventing this sudden killer of cattle. Some areas have needed to increase the levels of the standard amounts of magnesium because of severe deficiencies but if we get too high palatability is a problem and cattle may back off mineral consumption and we don’t want that. Work with your veterinarian and nutritionist or feedmill to make sure you have adequate of the macrominerals in your program and always keep a close eye on cattle in times of stress. Not all cattle will eat adequate amounts of minerals even though we have it out for them. Also, the heavy milking ones are more susceptible. This is a condition that is entirely preventable so by supplying good quality minerals you can prevent grass tetany as well as many other mineral deficiencies in your herd. Most other deficiencies come on slower but grass tetany is rather dramatic and it is the sort of drama we can use less of in our cattle herds. Remember, if you have one case of a downer from any of the three macrominerals others in the herd may be close at hand.
