The World Below the Brine Below the brine, the salty waters of the sea, is a wonderland waiting to be explored—its wide array of plants and creatures different but not wholly unlike those that can be found on land, in the world above.
American poet Walt Whitman (1819–92) celebrated the wonder and wildness of both nature and humanity, leaving a towering legacy to the world with such works as Leaves of Grass. “The World Below the Brine,” first published in 1860, was later included in the revised edition of Leaves of Grass.
Nineteenth-century poet Walt Whitman’s classic verse employs the language of his day to express a wonder that is timeless, while the surrealistic imagery of James Christopher Carroll’s art inspires readers to dive in for a closer look.
James Christopher Carroll is an author, illustrator, and graphic designer whose picture books include A Song, recently published by Creative Editions. He lives with his family in upstate New York.
